Cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch

Riding the Cogwheel Train to Jungfraujoch – the Complete Guide

Last Modified: August 10, 2023 //  by  Anda //   25 Comments

Riding the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch , the 3,466 m peak in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, is one of the most sought after experiences. To reach the peak you not only get to enjoy the magnificent Jungfrau region near Interlaken , but also experience the Jungfraubahn , Europe’s highest-altitude railway.

The train climbs up the mountain at this amazing elevation on a slope that sometimes reaches 25 degrees. Quite impressive, if you think about it.

How to Get to the Cogwheel Train to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken

What to expect on the cogwheel train to jungfraujoch, a final note.

Most travelers start this day trip from Interlaken Ost station. Jungfraujoch –Top of Europe station can be reached via two routs. Either by taking the train to Wengen, or the train to Grindewald. Both routes are about the same distance, so you can start on one and return on the other. This segment of the trip takes about 20 minutes.

From Grindewald or Lauterbrunnen (via Wengen) you need to change to a cog train heading towards Kleine Scheidegg (about 45 minutes). From Kleine Scheidegg you change trains again to get to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe station.

Train for Kleine Scheidegg

This last segment of the trip takes about 50 minutes. The cogwheel train goes through a 7 km tunnel that was dug through the rock of the Eiger and Mönch Alpine peaks and then reaches Jungfraujoch.

riding towards Kleine Scheidegg

The total time for the trip is roughly 2 hours and you need to change trains three times. The Swiss Pass covers only the first part of the ride (from Interlaken to Grindewald or Lauterbrunnen), so for the cogwheel train you need to buy a separate ticket (which is discounted with the Swiss Pass).

Cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch

From Interlaken Ost to Grindewald or Lauterbrunnen the ride is short and relatively boring, but once you board the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch the scenery changes dramatically. Riding through the Swiss Alps along the Kleind Scheidegg Pass is amazingly beautiful and peaceful.

view of the Swiss villages

Whatever pictures you might have seen of this place, the real thing is ten times better! Alpine villages scattered throughout the hills. Green meadows dotted with grazing cows. Rustic cottages with colorful flowers. And above all these, the stunning views of the Eiger and Mönch in the background. You think you may be in heaven!

This is the most picturesque part of the trip. From here on, once you change to the next cogwheel train, the road continues through a tunnel. But even though is completely dark, this last segment is very impressive. From an altitude of 2,061 m at Kleine Scheidegg the train continues to climb up and up, till it reaches its destination at 3,454 m.

The tunnel is a marvel of engineering that took over 13 years to built and was marked by many blasting accidents, strikes and financial problems. If you are lucky (like we were!) to be invited in the train conductor’s cabin, you can  see the tunnel in the beam of the locomotive headlights.

The cogwheel train makes two short stops in the tunnel: at Eigerwand and Eismeer. The stations have restroom facilities and panoramic windows from where you can enjoy the view for a few minutes.

Tips for Taking the Cogwheel Train to Jungfraujoch

1. make reservations.

No matter when you visit Switzerland, Jungfraujoch is a very popular destination and the train is always crowded. If you don’t have reservations you may have to wait for the next train, but you can’t go standing because of the steep slope.

2. Start as early as possible

The best is to board the day’s first train, although it’s pretty crowded. You are competing not only with first-time visitors, but also with locals who routinely go mountain climbing in this area.

By the way, I found this quite shocking: you see groups and groups of well-fit people of all ages wearing ski boots and carrying skis and heavy backpacks. And you keep wondering if they came all the way up here just to ski down the mountain. But why would they pay the steep price of the cogwheel train instead of using a ski lift for much less?

boarding the cogwheel train

And then you discover that in fact they are up here for way more than just skiing. These are rock climbers who ascend the steep rocks in ski boots and then ski down the mountain. Unbelievable!

Skiers atop the Jungfraujoch

This must be extremely strenuous not only because of the difficulty of the task itself, but because at 3,454 m the air is very rarefied and doesn’t provide enough oxygen for breathing.

3. Once coming out of a train, go fast to the next one

Seats fill out fast and even if you have a reservation, you may have a hard time grabbing a good seat.

4. Don’t book a non-refundable ticket

The weather is of utmost importance if you want to have an enjoyable experience atop the Jungfraujoch. If it’s too cloudy, or there is a storm coming-up you will be spending your money in vain.

Cogwheel tickets are very expensive (we paid around $190/person). For more up-to-date information on the tickets you can go to Jungfrau – Top of Europe website.

5. Take advantage of the “ Good Morning” or the “ Good Afternoon tickets “

They are available from May 1st to October 25th and are 50% off the regular price.  The Good Morning ticket is for the uphill train that leaves from Kleine Scheidegg at 08:00 a.m. or 08:30 a.m. with the latest return from Jungfraujoch at 1:00 p.m. The Good Afternoon ticket is for the train that leaves from Kleine Scheidegg at 3:30 p.m.

View from Kleine Scheidegg train station

Riding the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch is an experience in itself. The steep grade railway that will take you to the top of the mountain is not something that you see everyday.

The cogwheel is very different from other scenic trains in Switzerland. So if you are still wondering if arriving at the highest railway station in Europe it’s worth your time and money, I can assure you it is. But it’s not nearly as rewarding if you don’t have good weather. So don’t start this trip unless you can see the top of Jungfraujoch from Interlaken!

hi Anda, thanks for your article, its very helpful. I have a question regarding the cost of the cogwheel ride where your article mentions $190/pp. I find this info incorrect but i could be wrong. Is there a site where i can get the exact cost, time table and how to reserve a seat? thank you 🙂 Tory

Yeah, I know it sounds expensive but Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries I have ever visited. The price is currently $172 (176 Swiss Crowns) but you have a few package options. You can check them at MySwissAlpa.com or to Jungfrau.ch (I can’t add links in the comments). Hope this helps.

Hi Anda, my name is Kristin and I live in Brisbane, Australia and we are visiting Switzerland in April this year. Thanks for writing your article on the cogwheel train which was very interesting and informative. Does the cogwheel train run in April? As we looked at another cogwheel train to Pilatus and it appears not to run in April???

Thanks Kristin

January 24, 2019 at 11:18 pm

I’m glad if my post was of help to you, Kristin. You will have to check their website for ticket pricing and timetables. I was there in May, not in April.

May 7, 2017 at 12:47 pm

Hi Anda, I apologize because I know I sent you a message but I cannot find the reply. So I will ask again. We are going to be staying in Lauterbrunnen May 17-May 20 and hopefully going up to Jungfrau. We will bring warm jackets, hats, gloves and will wear hiking shoes. If wearing jeans do we need to wear base layers like smart wools under our jeans and shirts or will we get too hot? Also when you walk out on the snow areas is it packed or will we go thru several inches of snow? My shoes are just Merrell slip ons waterproof but they don’t comb up over my ankle. You mentioned it being so windy up there should we pack a windbreaker to put over our jackets? I also wondered if you could bring yaktrax to put on shoes so not to slip in icecastle? If I am unable to walk to ice palace or in snow with my family as I have bad back, knees and afib can I wait someplace inside at the top for them I cannot tell if there is in inside place at the very top? Again I apologize for asking the questions again. I believe you also went mid-May and looking at the weather for next week it is not looking very good right now? By any chance did you go in Tummelbach Falls? Just wondering if I can walk the stairs and how slippery it is. This is our first stop in Europe then driving to Tuscany where the weather looks to be much much warmer. So hard to pack! Our oldest son is graduating from college so this is a probably one of the last all together family trips we will do. Thank you again. Anne

Im staying in Grindelwald in May specifically in this hotel: Hotel Allegro/SJBZLincolnweg 23 | CH-8840 Einsiedeln –is this close to this spot? I want to ride the cogwheels.

April 10, 2017 at 7:23 am

I am not acquainted with Grindewald so I can’t tell you how close Hotel Allegro is from the train station. However, Grindewald is a very small place and most likely your hotel is not far from it.

This looks like a truly awesome experience. My husband is a train nut and loves any kind of train ride. I would love this one too. A great way for non-skiers to see the mountains.

June 28, 2015 at 8:42 am

We missed the opportunity to visit Interlaken when we were in Switzerland but we did ride a cogwheel train outside Lucerne at Mount Pilatus. What a great experience that was. We had great weather and the view was spectacular.

Really good photos inside the tunnel. How did you manage that?

This is so neat! What a great journey and I can just imagine the panoramic scenery. I love train rides and will definitely make this a must when we find ourselves in Switzerland. Thanks for all the tips.

Anda, we plan to ride a cogwheel to Mount Pilatus in Lucerne this summer- I wonder about the “scary” factor (I am a “scaredy cat” according to my daughter).

June 27, 2015 at 3:47 pm

I didn’t travel to Mount Pilatus, Victoria, so I don’t know. The cogwheel train for Jungfraujoch wasn’t scary at all (unless you get scared when the train goes through a tunnel).

June 28, 2015 at 8:58 am

I’m not sure why you’d find it intimidating but we didn’t find the cogwheel train on Mount Pilatus scary at all.

June 29, 2015 at 8:37 pm

Fear of heights? (I found Mt. Washington in NH and Tioga Pass quite scary)

June 27, 2015 at 8:00 am

I will take a ride like this just for the view. Like the big windows in both sides of the train. When I visited Switzerland, I took the cogwheel to Mt. Pilatus. It was short but the views from the top where amazing.

It sounds fabulous but the idea of having to rush to get a good seat is a huge turn-off. There is nothing I hate more than having to compete with the other tourists to enjoy an experience which we have all paid a lot for.

June 27, 2015 at 3:54 pm

I agree, Lyn, but that’s what you have to face when you visit popular places.

June 28, 2015 at 8:44 am

The best way to avoid some of this would likely be to travel off-season.

June 26, 2015 at 8:42 pm

I love trains – that’s my favorite mode of transportation. Your pictures, as usual, are breathtaking. And thanks for sharing great tips!

June 26, 2015 at 1:48 pm

Neither my husband or I ski, but it might be worth taking the Cogwheel Train to see a gorgeous chunk of the world, with the Eiger of book and movie fame, from such a great altitude. I wonder . . . what kind of facilities or hiking trails, if any, did you discover at the top?

June 26, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Oh, you can do a lot of hiking at the top (if your lungs can adapt to the high elevation!).

Suze The Luxury Columnist

June 25, 2015 at 8:39 am

You’re right, there are lots of skiers who use the train and it is surprising but I suppose they are doing it as a one-off!

June 25, 2015 at 4:09 pm

In fact there were more skiers than regular tourists on that train.

If you find yourself around Interlaken, why not climb the North Face of the Eiger, traverse the Mönch and scale the Jungfrau to an altitude of over 11,000 feet?  By train, of course, on the famous Jungfraubahn, one of Switzerland's most amazing train rides. Completed in 1912, the Jungfrau railway is open all year round and takes you to the most spectacular view of the Alps you can get without being Sir Edmund Hillary.  See an account of the journey in pictures .

Practical information

Train times   see route map.

The Jungfraubahn operates hourly from 08:00 until mid-afternoon, every day, all year round.

You can check train times & fares between anywhere in Switzerland and the Jungfraujoch - the station at the top of the Jungfraubahn - using the journey planner at the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) website www.sbb.ch .  This is an integrated planner covering all Swiss train, bus & ferry operators.  Make sure the fare you check is the no reduction price unless you have a Swiss Half Fare Card .

There's more information at the Jungfraubahn website, www.jungfrau.ch , including timetable, fares, webcams and weather reports.

How much does it cost?

Regular fare:   A trip on the Jungfraubahn doesn't come cheap:  The regular adult fare is around CHF 235 (£199) return from Interlaken Ost or CHF 222 (£188) return from Grindelwald.  You can check current prices at www.sbb.ch .

Swiss Travel Pass:   If you are making other Swiss train journeys you may well find that a Swiss Travel Pass is worthwhile, even though you still have to buy a 25% discounted ticket for the last leg from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfraujoch as explained below - but you'll have to do the maths as it depends what other trips you plan to do.  This trip alone doesn't warrant a pass.

Swiss Half Fare Card:   Alternatively, it's also worth considering a 1-month Swiss Half Fare Card as this breaks even just with the cost of one Interlaken to Jungfraujoch round trip plus one other shortish train trip.  Once you have a Swiss Half Fare Card , you can buy tickets to Jungfraujoch with a 50% reduction at any station or online at www.sbb.ch .

Good Morning Ticket:   Another way to save money is with a Good Morning ticket , available between early May and late October for CHF 175 (£148) return from Interlaken or CHF 165 (£140) return from Grindelwald.  You can buy this if you take the first or second train of the day, leaving Interlaken around 06:35 or 07:05, Kleine Scheidegg around 08:00 or 08:35, descending from the Jungfraujoch by 13:00 at the latest the same day.  Incidentally, the Swiss Half Fare card doesn't work with a Good Morning Ticket.

Is it worth it?

The train to the Jungfraujoch isn't cheap.  But it's a ride to the highest station in Europe, on a historic railway dating from 1912.  Much of the Jungfraubahn is in tunnel inside the mountain, but the views from the top are spectacular, see the photos below .  So yes, I'm glad I did it, though if you're on a tight budget it's not the end of the world if you go somewhere cheaper instead.  If you do it, make sure you check the weather first, to make sure it's a clear day.

Is altitude a problem?

At 11,000 feet the air is thin, so take it easy.  Walk slowly, sit down when you need to and don't rush.  You can certainly feel it.  But unless you have any specific medical problems, it's not something to worry about - you'll be fine, as will your kids.

How to buy tickets

You don't need to reserve or book in advance for trains to Jungfraujoch, you can just turn up, buy a ticket at the station and go.

In fact, I recommend buying a ticket on the day so you can check the weather before deciding to go - check the webcam on www.jungfrau.ch .  You wouldn't want to make an expensive journey to the Jungfraujoch only to find it fogged in.

However, reserving a place on the Jungfrau railway is a good idea, especially in good weather.  You can do this on the day or the day before (or earlier, if you insist) for CHF 10 at jungfrau.ch/seatreservation , separately from any ticket.

If you like, you can buy a round trip ticket between Wengen or Grindelwald and the Jungfraujoch online at www.switzerlandtravelcentre.com , just scroll down to Mountain Excursions & select Jungfraujoch .  You print out your own ticket, good for any train you like up & down on the day you choose.  If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card you can buy tickets with the 50% reduction this way too.  Tickets from Interlaken or anywhere else in Switzerland to Grindelwald or Wengen can be bought at the Swiss Railways site www.sbb.ch .

Good Morning tickets cannot be bought online at www.switzerlandtravelcentre.com or sbb.ch, in theory you should be able to buy it online at www.jungfrau.ch (though blowed if I can find how to do it) but it's easy enough to buy it at the station.

If you have a railpass

If you have a Eurail pass , Interrail pass or Swiss Travel Pass , these give unlimited travel on Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB), so get you as far as Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

However, they don't give free travel on the Wengernalpbahn from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen up to Kleine Scheidegg or Jungfraubahn from Kleine Scheidegg up to Jungfraujoch, so you need to buy a ticket for this section.  But these passes get you 25% off the regular price.

You can buy a round trip ticket from Grindelwald, Wengen or Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfrau with Swiss pass or Half Fare Card discount at www.switzerlandtravelcentre.com .

The journey in pictures

Step 1, by mainline train to interlaken ost, 567m or 1,860 feet above sea level.

Frequent Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) trains run from major Swiss cities to Interlaken Ost.  You'll also find direct trains from Germany to Interlaken and one daily train at 18:23 from Paris to Interlaken - although the latter arrives too late for onward travel the same day.  Changing trains at Interlaken Ost is easy and takes just a few minutes, walking from one train to the other.

Step 2, by local train to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, at 1,034m or 3,393 feet

Every half hour, a blue-and-yellow narrow-gauge train of the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) leaves Interlaken Ost with a portion for Grindelwald and another portion for Lauterbrunnen.  You can travel either route.  Journey time Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen 20 minutes, Interlaken to Grindelwald 34 minutes.  If you plan to stay overnight, either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen are the places to stay, pretty villages up in the mountains - I can recommend the Hotel Alte Post in Grindelwald .  As you can see in the photo below right, at Grindelwald the arrival from Interlaken and the onward train to Kleine Scheidegg are on opposite sides of the same platform, so changing trains only takes a few seconds.

Step 3, by local train to Kleine Scheidegg, at 2,061m or 6,762 feet

Every half-hour, a green-and-yellow local train of the Wengernalpbahn links Grindelwald with Kleine Scheidegg and also Lauterbrunnen with Kleine Scheidegg.  Journey time 33 minutes from Grindelwald or 43 minutes from Lauterbrunnen.

Step 4, take the Jungfraubahn to the Top of Europe, 3,454m or 11,333 feet above sea level

Every hour from morning until late afternoon, a Jungfraubahn train connects Kleine Scheidegg with Jungfraujoch - the col between the summits of the Mönch and the Jungfrau, known as the Top of Europe.

Jungfrau Railway – Switzerland

Jungfrau Railway, Switzerland

Known as the ‘top of Europe’, the Jungfrau Railway is certainly not for the fainthearted, a nine-kilometre journey ascending 11,332 ft to the highest railway station in Europe. The railway was built in 1912, running from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, a viewing and adventure platform located between the Bernese Highlands and the Valais in Switzerland.

Built into the Eiger and Mönch peaks, the railway runs almost entirely under the mountains though a tunnel and is one of Switzerland’s most scenic and exhilarating train rides . Experience icy wind across your face and snow crunching under your feet before heading into the ’Ice Palace’ with its Lindt chocolate tasting room , restaurants, shops and attractions, all at an altitude of 3,454 metres.

Jungfrau Railway route

The trip takes just 35 minutes in total, travelling for nine kilometres from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfrau, seven of those being through the Jungfrau tunnel. On the journey to the summit the train makes a stop at Eismeer within the middle of the tunnel, and passengers can disembark for five minutes to gaze out of windows built into the side of the mountain.

The train’s final stop is Jungfraubahn rail station, high up on a peak in a world of ice, rock and snow. However, it’s not just ice and snow at the top, in fact there’s a whole Sun Fun Park with attractions, four restaurants and two bars. Visit the Ice Palace, Omega’s Hole in One golfing experience or 250-metre corridor Alpine Sensation with a giant snow globe.

Passengers are only on board for 35 minutes, but the train itself is comfortable and modern, boasting large panoramic windows to make them most of the fantastic views and countless photo ops.

Why we love it

This train is exhilarating and will get your endorphins pumping, from the ride within the mountain to emerging at the summit 3,454 metres high. It’s a little cheesy and touristy thanks to the attractions, restaurants and ships at the top, but for the views it’s an absolute must.

Are There Direct Trains From Zurich to Jungfraujoch?

As of the time of writing (updated December 2023), there are no direct trains from Zurich to Jungfraujoch .

Jungfraujoch can be reached via Bern and Interlaken from Zurich. Most tourists, however, choose Interlaken as their base and then travel to Jungfraujoch from there.

How to Get From Zurich to Jungfraujoch

There are several ways to go from Zurich to Jungfraujoch. Jungfraujoch is accessible by train from Zurich, but a multilingual guide might make it more convenient and worthwhile to travel by coach.

We have listed below three of the best options for those who are traveling from Zurich:

  • Classic Train Route via Bern, Interlaken Ost, Lauterbrunnen, and Kleine Scheidegg
  • Modern Train Route via Bern, Interlaken Ost, Grindelwald, and the Eiger Express.
  • A guided tour that takes you from Zurich to Jungfraujoch and back.

Let’s go over the three options below.

Option 1: Zurich to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen – Kleine Scheidegg

train journey to jungfraujoch

Your first option to Jungfraujoch is the classic train route . It is a  slower scenic train ride  through Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg on the way to the Eiger Glacier and Jungfraujoch from  Lauterbrunnen .

Here is the route that you will have to take from Zurich to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg :

  • Zurich (or Zurich Airport) to Bern – If you are leaving from Zurich Train Station , just take the next train to Bern. Multiple trains per hour will lead you to Bern from Zurich. From Zurich Airport, you can take the Intercity train to Bern . Intercity trains that arrive or depart in Bern are generally those that travel to Brig or Geneva Airport. If you want to find out which train platform you need to go to and what time, you can check the screens and boards inside Zurich Airport.
  • Bern – From Bern, take the Intercity train going to Interlaken Ost . Trains to Interlaken usually depart on Platform 4. If you are boarding this train, make sure you check the signage to ensure you are boarding the correct one.
  • Interlaken Ost – From Interlaken Ost, you will have to take the train to Lauterbrunnen Village.
  • Lauterbrunnen –  As soon as you arrive at Lauterbrunnen train station, you will take the Wengernalpbahn (WAB). Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald are connected to the Kleine Scheidegg by the Wengernalpbahn. The railway is also the world’s longest continuous rack railway with a length of 19,114 meters.
  • Wengen –  As you ascend the mountain from Lauterbrunnen, you will be able to see almost the entire Lauterbrunnen Valley   before you arrive in the car-free village of  Wengen . No need to change your train. The train will continue its journey up to Kleine Scheidegg.
  • Kleine Scheidegg –  Following the stop in Wengen, it will ascend to Kleine Scheidegg. Located 2,061 meters above sea level, Kleine Scheidegg offers spectacular views of the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
  • Eiger Glacier  – You will need to change trains in Kleine Scheidegg to reach Eiger Gletscher. From there you will board the train ascending to  Jungfraujoch .

The total travel time from  Zurich to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg  is  4 hours and 9 minutes.

Option 2: Zurich to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald

train journey to jungfraujoch

Alternatively, you can travel from  Zurich  to  Jungfraujoch  via the  Grindelwald Terminal . At the terminal, you can take the   Eiger Express gondola   to the Eiger Glacier and finally to Jungfraujoch.

Here is the route that you will have to take from Zurich to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald :

  • Interlaken Ost – From Interlaken Ost, you will have to take the train to Grindelwald.
  • Grindelwald / Grindelwald Terminal  – From Interlaken, you will take the train to Grindelwald. Simply go into the Grindelwald Terminal. This Terminal is a new terminal that connects passengers to either Männlichen or Eiger Glacier (Eigergletscher).
  • Eiger Glacier via Eiger Express  – From Grindelwald Terminal, you will take the Eiger Express cable car to Eiger Glacier. From there you will board the train ascending to  Jungfraujoch .

Eiger Express

The Eiger Express opened on December 5, 2020. As its name suggests, the Eiger Express is a state-of-the-art tricable gondola lift. It is also called the 3S gondola. It is one of the world’s most modern 3S gondolas.

3S gondola lifts can support great lengths and weights without having to erect many support towers. Along the 6.5 km length from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier, there are only 7 support towers. Isn’t it amazing? The carrier cable facilitates this process using 3S technology. Thus, the Eiger Express has been designed with minimal impact on nature and blends in more with the environment.

The total travel time from  Zurich to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald  is  3 hours and 39 minutes.

Option 3: Guided Tour via GetYourGuide

train journey to jungfraujoch

The third option would be to join a 12-hour guided tour to Jungfraujoch from Zurich . The tour departs from Zurich and includes stops in Lucerne and Interlaken , before heading to the Jungfrau region . During this tour, you will be able to see the northern face of the Eiger, visit the Sphinx Observation Terrace, and explore the tunnels of the Ice Palace.

A professional multilingual guide will lead you on this guided tour. You will travel by coach from Zurich and take a cable car to Grindelwald. The cable car will then take you to the Eiger Glacier, where snowy mountain peaks await. You will then board the train to Jungfraujoch from Eiger Glacier.

Atop the mountain, there is a view of the Great Aletsch Glacier , snowcapped peaks, and the neighboring countries of Switzerland. You can also see the Sphinx Observation Terrace and tunnels at the Ice Palace . There is a restaurant where you can buy meals and refreshments separately.

On the descent, you’ll stop at Kleine Scheidegg for a short photo stop before reaching Lauterbrunnen . Prior to returning to Zurich, the guided tour will stop in Lucerne.

How Long Is the Train Ride From Zurich to Jungfraujoch?

The following table shows the train ride duration from Zurich to Jungfraujoch (updated December 2023):

Is the Train Route From Zurich to Jungfraujoch Scenic?

Intercity trains from Zurich Airport to Bern are not scenic trains . There are fast trains that travel from one big city to another, whose main purpose is to transport passengers as quickly as possible. These trains can reach high speeds, particularly while traversing the Zurich to Bern section.  You can still see the scenery during the ride, but it won’t be slow and steady like other scenic trains.

However, things start becoming more scenic as soon as you reach Interlaken . It gets even better after you leave Interlaken for either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

How Much Will the Train Ticket From Zurich to Jungfraujoch Cost?

As of the time of writing (December 2023), here are the train ticket prices from Zurich to Jungfraujoch:

As you can see, if you avail of the Half Fare Travel Card , you can save on your fare for long train journeys. So this is something to consider during your travel to Switzerland. You can do simple calculations and decide from there if it will be worth it for you.

Additionally, the cost of going via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch is the same right now. Therefore, it will come down to personal preference.  I am not going to suggest one route is better than the other because they are both beautiful. Why not do both if you don’t know which route to choose? You can take the Eiger Express up and the Wengeralpbahn down via Lauterbrunnen. Or do it the other way around.

Have fun whichever way you go. It will be an unforgettable experience.

Do You Need a Seat Reservation on the Train?

No, there is no need to reserve a spot on the train. But you can always add this option if that is your wish.

Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch tour - unforgettable day trip in the Swiss Alps

With so many well-known mountain destinations in Switzerland, it might be difficult to choose where to go in the Swiss Alps. If you have time and money, you shouldn’t limit yourself to just one place.

However, if you visit just one or two places in the Swiss mountains, then I really think that Jungfraujoch Top of Europe should be one of them. It will be the highlight of your trip to Switzerland. Find out!

What is Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch is a unique year-round mountain destination in Switzerland. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage site called Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch .

Jungfraujoch also referred to as Top of Europe , is a place where the highest railway station in Europe (3,454 m) is located.

With an elevation of 3,466 m, this is the lowest pass between two four-thousander mountains – Jungfrau and Mönch. It is therefore called the Jungfrau saddle (literal translation of the word Jungfraujoch).

Some people also call Jungfraujoch the Top of the World in Switzerland. And when you stand there, high above the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps, it sure feels like you are at the top of the world!

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe - one of the best places to visit in the Swiss Alps

Jungfraujoch history

It’s hard to imagine that the idea to build a railway to a glacier at over 3,5km (over 11,600 ft) height dates from the 19th century. Even today, it would be a huge challenge!

A Swiss entrepreneur Adolf Guyer- Zeller came up with a crazy idea to build a tunnel and a railway line to the rocky summit of Sphinx (now an observation deck at Jungfraujoch). Construction started in 1896, took 16 years to complete, and due to various reasons stopped a bit lower. The man behind the project died before it was completed…

The Jungfrau railway line is a significant achievement and even now, more than 100 years later, it still holds the title of the highest railway station in Europe.

Jungfraujoch Alpine Sensation experience is not to be missed when visiting Top of Europe in Switzerland

Where is Jungfraujoch, map & how to get there

It takes quite some time to reach Jungfraujoch. It’s a 2.5 hours train journey from Interlaken, 1.5 hours from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, or 1 hour from Wengen.

The only way to get to Jungfraujoch is by train . The last place where you can leave your car is Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, from where you have to take a train to Kleine Scheidegg. You have to switch trains at Kleine Scheidegg, where you hop on the luxury Jungfraujoch Railway train for the last part of the journey.

You can visit Jungfraujoch on your own – just make sure to book a train ticket in advance , especially if visiting in the high season. Alternatively, you can join an organized excursion to Jungfrau from a variety of cities in Switzerland (see below).

Update: The new Eiger Express tri-cable gondola from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier station is now the fastest way to get to Jungfraujoch. Once in Eiger, you have to take the train for the last section to Jungfraujoch. This journey takes less time than by train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg and from there to Jungfraujoch.

This is also one of the cheapest ways to get to Jungfraujoch. You can also opt to take the gondola up and the train back down via Kleine Scheidegg, so you can enjoy different scenery on your way up and down. Keep in mind that the gondola can get closed in case of very strong winds; for that, the train remains the best year-round option.

TIP: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , you can get a discount on Jungfraujoch tickets. Alternatively, for children from 6 and under 16, you can also get a Junior Travel Card at any major train station in Switzerland – it will save you a fortune when exploring the country.

Good to know: Because groups get big discounts, it might be cheaper to visit Jungfraujoch with a tour than on your own , especially if you are traveling here from one of the bigger cities and are not staying in the area. Here are the most popular options for organized Jungfraujoch tours :

  • Jungfraujoch from Zurich .
  • Jungfraujoch from Lucerne .
  • Jungfraujoch from Interlaken .

For more practical tips for your visit to Jungfraujoch, please check our practical information section at the end of the article.

What to do at Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch is so much more than the highest train station in Europe! In fact, it’s more than any other mountain destination we have visited so far. There is so much to see and do at Jungfraujoch that you can easily make a day trip of it, one of the best day trips in the Swiss Alps!

There is a wide range of activities at Jungfraujoch. Some activities like hiking or skiing and sledding at the Snow Fun park are seasonal (summer only), most others are available the whole year-round. Below is a short overview of everything that you can see and do at Jungfraujoch . Read on!

Things to do at Jungfraujoch:

1. Sphinx Observation Deck & Aletsch Glacier

The Sphinx Observatory is an astronomical observatory at Jungfraujoch, an international research station. Sphinx is one of the highest observatories in the world. It’s not accessible to the public, but you can visit the open viewing deck, called the Sphinx observation deck.

The view over the sea of snow of the Aletsch glacier from the Sphinx observatory is second to none. It is hard to imagine that this 22 km long glacier is almost a kilometer thick. Can you imagine that much ice?!

If you come here on a clear day (or if you find yourself above the clouds), seeing the Aletsch Glacier is one of the best experiences, a must do at Jungfraujoch.

To get to the Sphinx observation deck, you’ll need to take a really fast elevator. It ascends 108m in just 25 seconds.

Jungfraujoch Sphinx Observation Deck - view over Aletsch Glacier - Switzerland

You wouldn’t believe it, but even at this height, there are some birds living at Jungfraujoch. Yes, even in winter when temperatures of -20°C (-4F) aren’t uncommon, you are likely to run into some birds here. Unbelievable!

2. Ice Palace

If you want to get up close and personal with the glacier, then don’t miss the Ice Palace , probably the most impressive of all Jungfraujoch attractions.

Walking in an ice tunnel under a glacier is something that is always exciting. No matter how many times you’ve done it, it just takes your breath away.

There are all kinds of ice sculptures at the Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch. You never know what you’ll find, because they change exposition quite often. We saw eagles, bears, and the kids also found Scrat from Ice Age stuck inside the ice… They didn’t stop talking about it for days…

3. Alpine Sensation

Alpine Sensation is a 250m-long corridor that connects the Sphinx Hall with the Ice Palace. It’s a tribute to the miners who built the railway and the history of this unique place.

It’s a beautifully done, multimedia-staged trip back in time and a truly touching experience.

Our kids were fascinated by a giant snowball with a miniature world inside of it. They could have watched it for hours…

4. Jungfrau Panorama

Jungfrau Panorama film is a fascinating experience that shows you a 360° panorama of the surrounding area.

So even if you visit Jungfraujoch on a less beautiful day, when mountains are covered in clouds, this unique virtual experience lets you admire the magnificent panorama.

It takes just a few minutes and is included with any Jungfraujoch ticket.

5. Glacier Plateau

Glacier Plateau is an extremely popular photo stop at Jungfraujoch.

Not only do you have guaranteed snow and ice 365 days a year, but it also offers an amazing view over the nearby Jungfrau and Silberhorn mountain peaks.

Even if you visit Jungfraujoch in the summer, you’ll find snow here. So if you want to get outside and walk around on the snow, this is the place to be.

View over Jungfrau mountain from the Glacier Plateau at Jungfraujoch Top of Europe in Switzerland

6. Snow Fun Park

Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch is only open outside the ski season (mid-May to mid-October). If you come to Jungfrau in winter, there are plenty of ski slopes and sledding runs in the area. But if you visit this beautiful region in summer, you can experience the snow at the Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch.

Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snow tubing are available. More adventurous can also try the Flying Fox. Ziplining above the glacier – how (literally) cool is that?!

Keep in mind that Snow Park requires a separate ticket and – unlike most other experiences at Jungfraujoch – is not included with the railway ticket.

Single tickets are quite expensive, so I recommend getting a day ticket that includes all activities and the hire of the necessary equipment ( more info here ). Make sure to come early and you can spend the whole fun day at Jungfraujoch!

Winter toboggan in Switzerland

7. Mönchsjochhütte

If you visit Jungfraujoch in summer, in addition to all of the above, you can also hike to Switzerland’s highest serviced mountain hut, Mönchsjochhütte (Mönchsjoch Hut).

It is accessible from the Jungfraujoch on a marked footpath through the glacier and takes about 45 minutes one way.

Make sure you wear good hiking boots if you plan to go hiking here. Oh, and make sure to always stay on the marked paths. Wandering onto a glacier without an experienced local guide is very dangerous!

Usually, Mönchsjochhütte is open from +- mid-March to mid-October.

8. Lindt Swiss chocolate experience

You can’t visit any place in Switzerland and not try some Swiss chocolate. Jungfraujoch is no exception.

Lindt Chocolate Heaven is much more than just a chocolate shop. Combining the old-fashioned chocolate-making process with interactive displays, it’s a really fun place to see when visiting Top of Europe.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to some delicious Lindt chocolate – it melts in your mouth!

Lindt chocolate experience is just one of the many things to do at Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

9. Restaurants and shops

Since you will probably spend the whole day at Jungfraujoch, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of nice restaurants and shops on top. You can find everything from Swiss chocolate to traditional souvenirs, Swiss knives, and even clothes at one of the Jungfraujoch shops.

There is a self-service restaurant and also an a-la-carte restaurant with amazing glacier views. We had lunch at the Crystal Restaurant and found that the food was actually very reasonably priced for Swiss standards (and the portions were huge).

Dining high above the clouds and with a view like that is an unforgettable experience!

How expensive are Jungfraujoch tickets?

Jungfraujoch tickets are very expensive and prices depend on the season and on the train station from/to where you are traveling. In the high season, a regular ticket from a train station nearby will cost you around 250 CHF (about 260 EUR or 280 USD).

If you want to find out the exact price for your journey, you can check the price brochure here . Alternatively, you can easily see the most up-to-date prices in your own currency and book your tickets here .

This is the most popular ticket . It includes the train from Interlaken all the way to Jungfraujoch. During the booking process, you can choose whether you travel to the top via Lauterbrunnen or via Grindelwald.

Good to know. Kids under 6 and with Junior Travel Card travel free of charge and children under 16 pay half the price. As already mentioned, you also get discounts with the Swiss Pass .

Is Jungfraujoch worth the money?

Just like many people, you are probably also wondering if  it’s worth the money to visit Jungfraujoch? Also because there are so many places to include in your Swiss trip itinerary and limited time to see everything you want… I was asking myself the same thing before we visited.

Visiting Jungfraujoch is expensive, very expensive, but you probably already know that nothing is cheap in Switzerland. Also, all the activities I mentioned above (except for Snow Fun Park) are included in the ticket price . Just try to imagine how much it costs to build and run a place like this…

We have visited many places in Switzerland over the years and to us, Jungfraujoch is one of the most unique places and experiences in the Swiss Alps . So my answer is YES – if you can afford it and have time, Jungfraujoch is absolutely worth the money .

If, however, you still have a long list of places to visit in Switzerland, or have a tighter budget, there are also so many other beautiful destinations to visit that don’t cost half as much. So it really depends on what you compare it to.

If you only have a day in the region and your budget is tight, head to Grindelwald-First instead. Other nice options are Schynige Platte , Mürren. Also Mount Titlis or Mt Pilatus near Lucerne are nice alternatives. All these are much cheaper than Jungfraujoch.

Visiting Jungfrau Top Of Europe in Switzerland

How to visit Jungfraujoch cheaper

Here are some ways to visit Jungfraujoch cheaper:

1. Get a regional pass. If you are staying in the area for a longer time and get the Jungfrau Region Winter Sportpass pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass (only available in summer) for at least 3 days, you can get a ticket to Jungfraujoch at a seriously reduced rate (about 1/3rd of the price). In addition, this pass also gives you a 10% discount at the shops at Jungfraujoch.

We visited Jungfraujoch when we were skiing in Wengen . Because we had a ski pass for the area, we only had to get an extra ticket for the last part of the journey – from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, which was about 1/3rd the price of the regular ticket.

2. Go in a lower season. It is about 25 CHF cheaper to visit Jungfraujoch in the winter or in the shoulder season compared to summer. The peak season is from June to August.

3. Get a Swiss Pass. If you have the Swiss Pass , you can travel for free to Grindelwald or Wengen and get a 25% discount for the journey from there to Jungfraujoch.

4. Go with a group of friends. If you travel with a group of 10 people, you can get a group discount which is about 30%.

5. Go with a tour. If you book an organized tour to Jungfraujoch from bigger cities, it’s often cheaper than going on your own. This is because they take advantage of group rates.

6. Take a cable car. If you book a ticket by cable car + train rather than by train both ways, it’s sometimes a little bit cheaper that way.

Where to stay near Jungfraujoch

You can visit Jungfraujoch as a day trip from many major cities in Switzerland, so you don’t absolutely have to stay nearby. However, there is so much more to see and do in this region, that it’s definitely worth planning a few days here.

The closest hotel to Jungfraujoch is   Hotel Bellevue des Alpes  at Kleine Scheidegg. However, it’s located high on the mountain, is very expensive, and there’s not that much that you can do there…

We always stay in Wengen , which is a car-free village with direct train connections to Kleine Scheidegg, from where you take the train to Jungfraujoch. Alternatively, there are lots of accommodations in Grindelwald , just on the other side of the mountains, and also with a direct train connection to Kleine Scheidegg and cable car to Eiger Glacier.

Most international tourists who come to the region for Jungfraujoch and the Grindelwald-First area, stay in Grindelwald. Here are a few hotel recommendations in Grindelwald town center for different budgets:

$$$$$ Bergwelt Grindelwald – Alpine Design Resort $$$$ Eiger Selfness Hotel $$$ Sunstar Hotel & SPA $$ Eiger Lodge Chic

TIP: Using the map below, you can compare hotels, B&Bs, and short-term rental accommodations in Grindelwald . Simply insert your travel dates and group size, and you’ll see what’s available for your stay. Check it out!

Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe, is such a special place that I really think it deserves to be included in any Swiss itinerary. It’s not just the highlight of the Jungfrau Region, but also one of the most unique places you can visit in Switzerland .

As for us, we have been to the Jungfrau Region many times and have just booked another trip for the summer. It’s a place you’ll want to return to as well!

TIP: If you like places like Jungfraujoch, you’ll also love Mount Titlis . It’s another wonderful day-trip destination in central Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch FAQ

Jungfrau is a mountain (4,158 m) whereas Jungfraujoch is Europe’s highest train station (3,454 m). Jungfraujoch means the “Jungfrau saddle”, which is basically the connecting point between the peaks of Mt Jungfrau and Mt Mönch. You can easily visit Jungfraujoch from where you can admire – among others – the view of Jungfrau.

Visiting Jungfraujoch is very expensive and many people wonder if it’s worth going there. Jungfraujoch offers one of the most unique experiences in the Swiss Alps, so yes, if you can afford it, it is absolutely worth a visit. If, however, you are on a tight budget, there are many cheaper destinations like Grindelwald-First, Schynige Platte, or Mount Titlis (to name just a few) that are worth your time just as much.

Jungfraujoch is the highest train station in Europe. Building and maintaining a railway this high in the mountains (where there is always snow) is very costly. Furthermore, there are just that many trains that can drive to Jungfraujoch in a day, which limits the number of visitors. All this makes it a more expensive destination.

Jungfraujoch is a year round destination and it’s open every day.

Jungfraujoch has something unique to offer in all seasons and since many attractions are inside, so you can visit at any time. There is always snow here, but if you visit in summer, you can hike to Mönchshütte or go snow tubing on the glacier. In addition, there are nice hiking possibilities in the area. So there’s more to see and do in Jungfraujoch in summer than in winter.

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is only worth it if you are staying in the Jungfrau Region for at least 3 days and are planning to take trains/ gondolas every day. In that case, it’s absolutely worth it! Not only will it save you money for transportation, but it also gives you complete flexibility – you can easily change your travel plans during the day because all the trains and gondolas in the region are included.

I will be staying in Lauterbrunnen at the end of May. Is it possible to buy a ticket which gives you a choice of how to get up and down the Jungfraujoch i.e Eiger Express/train for the ascent and just the train for the descent to Kleine Scheidegg and then on to Wengen so that I can walk back to Lauterbrunnen?

Is there also a gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald?

Hi, a few things: Lauterbrunnen doesn't have any gondolas to that side of the mountain, only toward Mürren. If you want to go to Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen, you'll have to take a train to Kleine Scheidegg and from there switch to another train to the Top of Europe. If you want to go to Grindelwald from Lauterbrunnen, the fastest way is by train via Zweilütschinen. Otherwise, via Kleine Scheidegg which is more scenic but also a lot more expensive. Eiger Gondola runs from Grindelwald, so if you want to take it either way, you will have to travel via Grindelwald at least one way. Just to be clear - if you just want to visit Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen, the easiest way is to simply take a train via Kleine Scheidegg and forget Grindelwald altogether. Unless you absolutely want to see the scenery there. Or you can simply visit Grindelwald separately, on another day if you are in the area longer. You can find all ticket options on the website of the Jungfrau Region but I can imagine that it can be very overwhelming. If you want to take many different trains in this area in a short time, it's often better to get a (multi-)day pass. If you just want a very specific ticket excluding some parts of the journey, simply ask at the ticket desk, but often, skipping one short part of the journey and doing it on foot will not be cheaper than paying for a round-trip ticket. You can still hike as much as you like though ;). Hope this helps a bit. In reality, it's not as complicated as it looks, but you need to decide which way you travel - the shortest route which is just up and down the same way, or the 'see everything' route which is basically a round trip via Grindelwald, going up to the mountain one way and coming back via the other side. Have a great trip!

Thursday 25th of January 2024

We plan to stay at Grindelwald for three nights. Of course, we want to visit Jungfraujoch. Is the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass better in price? We'll be there in the end of May.

Monday 29th of January 2024

Hi Julia, which pass or ticket is best for you depends on your travel plans - which trains/gondolas/boats you take, which mountain destinations you visit, etc. So I really can't compare it for you. Keep in mind that the last part of the journey to the top of Jungfraujoch (from Schynige Platte or Eiger gondola) is normally not included in any of the passes, but some passes give you a discount on it.

Sunday 26th of November 2023

Good day Jurga, happy to meet you and thanks for sharing your thoughts here. I and my husband will be arriving in Switzerland in beginning of Dec as per itinerary below, still thinking what category of Swiss Pass (SP) should I purchase. I am not going for skiing but would spend more time at scenic places and enjoy the views.

Day1: Frankfurt (Eurail ticket to Lucerne?) Day2: Lucerne : city sightseeing & Mt Rigi Day3-6: Grindelwald Town (stay here on day 3-6), Jungfraudjoch (1 day), Interlaken, Lauterbrunen, Murren, Wengen ...have more time to explore any more places? Day 6-8: Zermatt Day 9: Glacier Express (reservation seat paid), from Zermatt to Chur Day 10: Black Forest Day 11: Frankfurt

Would like to know which category of SP covers Jungfraudjoch and Glacier Express seat tickets. Appreciate your advice.

Regards Janice

Hi Janice, you may want to read our guide on Swiss Travel Pass for more information on what's included and what's not. In any case, the last leg of the train journey to Jungfraujoch is never included and gondolas/trains to most other mountain peaks (e.g. Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt or Grindelwald-First) are not included either, but you get a discount. Glacier Express is included, but you have to reserve the seats at an extra cost (which you seem to have done). Also, there is no difference in what's included with whatever Swiss Travel Pass you get - the main difference is the travel class and flexibility in terms or travel dates. Once again, please check the article I linked to for more information. Have a great trip!

Tuesday 31st of October 2023

Hi Jurga, i'm so glad i came across your post, very informative and interesting. I will be traveling with family to Switzerland in December 2023, sadly to say we will have a very short stay in the country for this trip. Our itinerary are as follows: Day 1 Arrival Zurich Day 2 Zurich to Grindelwald (overnight at Grindelwald) Day 3 From Grindelwald to Geneva Day 4 Geneva to Milan Our main purpose to Grindelwald is to visit Jungfraujoh and plan to go up Top Of Europe on day 3 before leaving for Geneva. Please advise: 1) Is it worth to buy Swiss Travel Pass ? should the pass be for 3 or 4 days? or a half price pass is a better option? 2) Does the STP covers train from Zurich-->Grindelwald-->Geneva-->Milan?

Friday 3rd of November 2023

Hi Evelyn, please take a look at our guide to Swiss Pass for more information about what's covered or not. Whether it's worth it, it depends on so many factors. With such a short trip it may not always be the case, but if you want to be 100% sure, the only way to check is to calculate the prices of everything you plan to do and then compare. If you have no time for this calculation, just get the pass for 3 days - normally, it should be worth it. And no, Swiss Pass will normally only cover train journeys within Switzerland so not all the way to Milan. Have a great trip!

Thursday 21st of September 2023

Hi! I will be staying near Interlaken ost, I'm wondering if it's possible to go to Grindelwald and enjoy some activities before going up to Jungfrau, or the whole trip up and down to Jungfrau would pretty much take up the whole day and it's best to just go up again to Grindelwald on another day?

Friday 22nd of September 2023

@Jurga, Thank you for taking time to answer. I appreciate your blogs, big help for new and old travellers alike. Keep it up and more power to your page. 😉

Hi Camille, it depends on what you want to do in Grindelwald. If it's just visiting the town and the sights in the valley, then you can easily combine it with Jungfraujoch. If you also want to visit Gridelwald-First, then it will be rushed and you'll need two separate tickets for each mountain peak, but won't be able to make the most of any of them.

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe: A Must-See Swiss Excursion

train journey to jungfraujoch

What’s In This Article

Jungfraujoch is a mountaintop destination in the Swiss Alps known for its breathtaking views of mountains and glaciers. It’s been one of our favorite excursions and the best part of our Switzerland family vacation .

About Jungfraujoch

The name Jungfraujocjh means maiden saddle, and Jungfraujoch is a saddle connecting the two 12,000 ft mountain peaks of Jungfrau and Monch in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch is home to various attractions, including the Ice Palace, the Sphinx Observatory, and the highest post office in Europe.

At 11,300 ft above sea level, Jungfraujoch is also the highest railway station in Europe.

Getting to Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Day Trip With Kids

We took a summer day trip to Jungfraujoch, the best part of our summer Switzerland trip.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jungfraujoch is accessible by cogwheel train, and the journey itself is a great experience.

Jungfraujoch Tickets

Jungfraujoch train tickets are available in various forms or by purchasing tours. The most convenient way to purchase a train ticket is from the official Swiss Travel website. Before buying tickets, check Jungfraujoch’s weather forecast to ensure you get better views from the observation deck.

The cogwheel train ride begins on the valley floor in Laute r brunnen and winds up the mountain through the town of Wengen , where we stayed for our Oberland visit.

Ticket prices from Lauterbrunnen start at 84 Swiss Franc round trip (about USD 89). Jungfraujoch is one of several railways not included in the Swiss Rail or Oberland unlimited travel passes. However, these passes still provide a discount on the tickets. There is an additional cost for a seat reservation, and it’s recommended during the high season, as the trails can fill up.

If you have a Swiss Pass or Oberland unlimited rail pass, you can use it to purchase tickets at a discounted rate. Cheaper tickets can also be purchased with a Swiss Half Fare Card, which offers a 50% discount on rail travel in Switzerland. For children under 16, there is the Junior Card, which offers free or discounted rail travel throughout Switzerland. Whether you’re a student, a senior citizen, or a family, there are plenty of options for purchasing Jungfraujoch tickets at a discounted rate.

Suppose you’re interested in visiting Jungfraujoch for the day from one of Switzerland’s larger cities. In that case, you can also book tours that include tickets from cities such as Geneva, Zurich, or Lucerne.

Train Journey

The scenery from the train is one of the best parts of this day trip!

Starting from Lauterbrunnen gives you some fantastic views of the Instagram-famous waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen before stopping in the town free car of Wengen.

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Train

You continue the journey after your first stop at Kleine Scheidegg station, a small village on the way up the mountain. This rail trip offers spectacular views of some of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps. The last part of the journey is through the long tunnel to Jungfraujoch Station, the highest train station in Europe.

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe T

If you’re starting your journey from Interlaken (or beyond), a separate train connection is needed from Interlaken Ost station to Lauterbrunnen for 3 trains. Train schedules are easy to find with apps like Google Maps, and train time with easy to make connections. The total journey time from Lauterbrunnen is about 90 minutes.

You can also shorten the journey to Jungfraujoch (depending on where you’re staying) by taking the Eiger Express cable car for part of the journey, connecting through Grindelwald Terminal to Eiger Glacier / station Eigergletscher before continuing on the train.

Best Time To Go

Any time of year is a good time to visit Jungfraujoch as there is snow year-round, but our favorite time to visit has been in the summer. Summer gives you a break from the heat, and hotel and vacation rentals are much cheaper than winter’s high season. Take the first train for a better chance at good weather, and you’ll also beat the crowds.

Things To Do

Jungfraujoch is one of the best places to visit with kids in the Bernese Alps. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy the Swiss Alps’ spectacular views and participate in various activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing . It is one of the most popular day trips in the Oberland area.

If you’re looking for a truly breathtaking view, take a trip up to the observation deck. Here on a clear day, you can take in the stunning panoramic views of the Alps that stretch out before you.

A good place to start your day at Jungfraujoch is outside at the open viewing deck. We followed that up with sledding, tobogganing, and exploring the ice palace’s long corridors and then headed inside to warm up and pick up some chocolates at the Lindt Swiss Chocolate store.

Snow Tubing and Tobbogan Rentals

For a fee, you can enjoy snow tubing and tobogganing at Junfraujoch. A moving walkway takes you back to the top of the hill. This was our kid’s favorite part of Jungfraujoch!

Food and Shops

There are several restaurants on Jungfrajoch, with more options at Kleine Scheidegg for lunch on the return trip. Be sure to pick up some chocolate from the Lindt store.

After a day exploring Jungfrajoch at a high elevation, our kids showed signs of high altitude sickness, and we started the scenic route via Jungfrau Railway journey back to Wengen.

On the return train trip, we stopped in Kleine Scheidegg for lunch, where heavy snow was coming down at the start of June. Kleine Scheidegg has several restaurants, including one in the station.

Where to Stay Near Jungfraujoch

If you’re looking for a place to stay near Jungfraujoch in Switzerland, you have many options; here are some of our favorites.

Wengen is where we stayed on our most recent trip. It’s one of the closest places to Jungfraujoch, right on the train line.

A smaller resort town in the mountains, Wengen has fantastic views as it sits above Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is a quiet, car-free village, so it may not be the best choice if you’re looking for excitement. The train from Lauterbrunnen passes through Wengen on the way to Jungfraujoch.

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Wengen

Interlaken is the closest larger city. However, it is more of a commercial/transportation hub than a mountain village. We recommend staying in one of the following small towns nearby that will give you more of a Swiss mountain village vacation.

Lauterbrunnen

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is another excellent option for a slightly smaller town in the valley below Wengen . Here, you’ll find more hotels, vacation rentals, and various shops and restaurants. Lauterbrunnen will also give you some great views of the giant Lauterbrunnen waterfalls.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald is another good choice for a scenic town and one of the most popular. Grindelwald is connected to Jungfraujoch by the Eiger Express cable car.

Grindewald

These towns offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains, making them ideal bases for exploring the Jungfrau region. Whether you are looking for a luxurious hotel or a cozy vacation rental, you’ll indeed find the perfect place to stay near Jungfrajoch.

On our most recent trip, we stayed in Wengen. For a friendly resort and our kid’s favorite, check out Swiss Holiday Park Morschach, several hours east of Jungfraujoch.

Jungfrau is one of the best things to see in Switzerland and was the best part of our recent family Switzerland trip.

Alpine sensation

A shudder runs down the spine of whoever enters the 250 metre long corridor between the Sphinx Hall and Ice Palace. Not only because of the frosty temperatures, but also because of the sacrifices made by the miners to open up the Jungfraujoch to the railway. 30 memorial tablets bear witness to this. The music on the way also gives you goosebumps: It brings back to life the beginnings of the Jungfraubahn, together with the images from the time of the tourism visionaries. Even if visitors are more comfortable today than the miners were – they feel relieved when, at the end of the experience, they can pose in front of the giant snow globe and say: I made it!

7 Best Scenic Train Rides In Switzerland

S tunning landscape views roll by your giant picture window as you depart on famous scenic train rides across Switzerland. From Geneva to Zurich and Basel to Zermatt, the Swiss Alps, turquoise lakes, and rolling pastures these best scenic train rides in Switzerland will fill your window with breathtaking scenery.

I have collected a few of my favorite train travel excursions across this beautiful country and presented them in no particular order. This is not an all-inclusive list of picturesque train trips through Switzerland, but it is a wonderful place to start dreaming of your next train-centric adventure.

1. Jungfraujoch – Top Of Europe

No matter what the season, a ride to Europe’s highest railway station, the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe , is a panoramic adventure. At the summit’s Sphinx Terrace, you can view the Aletsch Glacier, the Black Forest, and the Vosges.

Plan to spend several hours at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Make your way to the outside observation deck where the air is chilly and the views are beyond breathtaking. Slip and slide during a visit to the Ice Palace — an ice sculpture art gallery carved into the glacier in the 1930s. Everything here is ice; the floors, ceiling, and frozen tableaus impart an Ice Age adventure. Complete your mountaintop visit with a stop at the highest Lindt Chocolate shop in the world.

Downhill skiers will love exploring the Jungfrau region on their next European ski holiday.

2. Golden Pass Express, Montreux To Interlaken

Travel in First or Prestige Class for an elevated, quintessentially Swiss adventure on the Golden Pass Express between Montreux and Interlaken. Enjoy caviar and champagne as your luxury car rolls from Montreux, on beautiful Lake Geneva, to the charming town of Interlaken . The 3-plus-hour journey is filled with stunning views of crystal-blue lakes, verdant pastures, and snow-capped mountains.

Once in Interlaken, you can make the transfer to the Jungfraujoch for a close up encounter with the Bernese Oberland. On the Montreux terminus, you can sail around Lac Léman, aka Lake Geneva, and enjoy the quaint shoreline towns and bustling city of Geneva.

3. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn

Skiers, photography buffs, and pretty much everyone else should visit the iconic Matterhorn at least once. Jump on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for a fabulous train ride. On this intrepid alpine adventure, your train encounters 33 tunnels and 126 overpasses while rising a whopping 3,300 meters (10,826 feet) in altitude.

Panoramic windows afford wide-angle views of craggy mountains, brilliantly blue waterways, and plenty of beautiful sunshine.

4. Glacier Express, Zermatt To St. Moritz

The Glacier Express route , Zermatt to St. Moritz, sets the standard that all Swiss scenic trains are measured upon. Slipping through the Swiss Alps, this route hits luxury ski resorts while imparting a slow-travel feeling. The journey takes 8 hours — a very slow express train ride — but the show-stopping scenery offers you a chance to absorb the wild beauty of this scenic route.

When you reach St. Moritz, book a stay at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel . If you don’t want to break your budget with a stay of over $1,000 a night, simply stop by the Renaissance Bar for the St. Moritzino cocktail made with Cointreau, fresh lime, and orgeat syrup.

5. Bernina Express

The Bernina Express runs from Chur to Tirano, Italy. Four hours of glorious scenic vistas, the Bernina Express has steep runs, plentiful bridge crossings, icy glaciers, and Mediterranean palm trees. It offers such a wide variety of landscapes, guests are continually gushing over the sheer beauty and uniqueness of this train ride.

Both Switzerland and Italy are part of the Schengen Agreement , which allows passage between the countries’ borders. However, you should still carry your passport with you as you pass from country to country.

6. Cogwheel Railway To Mount Pilatus

If you love adventure, you will adore the cogwheel railway to Mount Pilatus . Billed as “the steepest cogwheel railway in the world” it reaches an alarming grade of 48 percent. The 30-minute, nail-biting ride up the mountain offers heart-pounding views.

If you decide a one-way train trip is all your nerves can take, there are a few alternatives. You can take the gondola, which offers 360-degree panoramic mountain views. Hiking down (or up) is another mode of transportation. AllTrails lists seven different options for hiking Mount Pilatus. Some are moderate and some are hard, but all of them go up, up, and up.

7. Gelmerbahn

From early June to late October, you can take the funicular ride of your life. The Gelmerbahn is a short, 12-minute ride in an open-air funicular car. The alarmingly steep grade offers spectacular views of Gelmersee — a brilliant blue lake — as you creep up the mountainside backwards.

Once at the top of the funicular, you can hike up to the Gelmerhütte for an overnight stay. The rooms are shared rustic spaces, but the mountaintop experience is unsurpassed.

Swiss Travel Pass

No matter how long your stay, the Swiss Travel Pass will save you money while you ride the rails, bus, or boat around the beautiful Swiss countryside.

It will be a long day.

train journey to jungfraujoch

You can take the gondola from Eigergletscher down to Grindelwald Terminal. I cannot imagine you would need three and half hours to see the scenery and have a meal in fact I would rather eat in Grindelwald of Wengen. Another point I think it would possibly pay you ( if you do go ahead with this trip) to cost the trip using the Half Fare Card of course this would depend on what other travel you were planning.

train journey to jungfraujoch

Thank you so much for all this information. After reading up on the half price card that makes way more sense. And multiple people have said to eat in Wengen and only spend about 2 hours at the observatory. All this information is really great. Thanks so much

Thank you very much for all this information. It does make more sense to spend less time up there and eat in one of the towns. Thanks again as all this is very much appreciated.

The food at the top is your fairly standard "tourist trap" stuff. You'll be far better off at a restaurant in Wengen.
