One day in lille, france: itinerary + self-guided walking tour.

Featuring grand cobblestoned squares lined with exuberant Baroque buildings, Lille is one of France’s best-kept secrets. And thanks to its excellent rail connections, it is easy to take a day trip to Lille from other major cities, including London on Eurostar.

But which are the best things to see during one day in Lille? As a three-time visitor, this is where I can help.

Make the most of your time in this fascinating Flemish city by following my 1-day Lille itinerary. There’s a map that you can use for a self-guided walking tour as well as practical information, including where to stay and how to get there and get around.

IN THIS ARTICLE

Is One Day in Lille Enough?

One day in Lille is enough to cover its main sights. Despite its size, the city’s main attractions are close together, making it easy to explore on foot. However, I recommend spending two days in Lille to appreciate it at a more relaxed pace. This also means that you can take a look at the UNESCO-listed Lille Citadel and visit the extraordinary La Piscine de Roubaix.

1-Day Lille Itinerary + Map

This Lille 1-day itinerary starts at Musée de Hospice Comtesse and finishes at the Beffroi de Lille:

  • Musée de Hospice Comtesse

Place aux Oignons

  • Notre Dame de la Treille
  • Place de Théâtre
  • La Veille Bourse
  • Place du Générale-de-Gaulle

Church of St. Etienne

Palais des beaux-arts, lille.

  • Porte de Paris
  • Beffroi de Lille

This walk follows a logical route from north to south but you may need to tweak it and dog-leg back to a few places to accommodate their opening hours. Check these in advance.

The distance between these sights is less than 2 miles . To help you on your way, here’s a map you can use as a  self-guided Lille walking tour . Click here or on the image for step-by-step directions and to send to your phone.

What to Do in Lille in One Day

Musée de hospice comtesse (hospice compesse museum).

Founded in 1237 by Countess Jeanne de Flandre, the Hospice Comtesse Museum is the first stop on our Lille itinerary. This hospital remained in service until 1939 and is now the city’s museum and home to a collection of Flemish paintings, tapestries, wood sculptures and porcelain.

Aux Merveilleux de Fred

No Lille day trip is complete without trying Merveilleux. The best place to pick these up is Aux Merveilleux de Fred and there’s a shop opposite the Hospice Comtesse Museum.

Literally marvellous, these little cakes are made from clouds of light meringue liberally smothered in fresh cream and chocolate shavings.

a lille aux merveilleux 2

Despite what its name suggests, onions have played no part in the history of Place aux Oignons. Back in the Middle Ages, this photogenic square formed part of the fortress of the Counts of Flanders, none of which remains. Today, it is home to several good restaurants.

Notre Dame de la Treille (Lille Cathedral)

people sitting on steps outside the grey and white facade of lille cathedral

I have walked down the nave of many cathedrals over the years but the Notre Dame de la Treille ranks amongst the most interesting that I have visited.

Lille Cathedral owes its unique appearance to its troubled genesis. Originally conceived as a Gothic building, the cathedral’s foundations were laid in 1854. However, workers had to down tools in 1947 when funds dried up, and construction was not resumed until 1999.

The resulting cathedral is a dizzying mix of traditional meets contemporary. The ugly modern façade, made from 110 marble sheets, contrasts with the cathedral’s interior with its soaring Gothic arches.

Its glass  rose window  above the main entrance features unusual symbols including UFOs & astronauts, said to represent the cycle of death and resurrection.

modern circular stained glass window filled with abstract symbols

However, for me, Lille Cathedral’s star turn is its  La Sainte Chapelle  behind the main altar. Housing a small 12th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, it has an exquisite mosaic floor.

beautiful chapel with a mosaic floor and gilded altar and stained glass windows

Place de Théâtre & La Veille Bourse

Two flamboyant buildings dominate Lille’s Place du Théâtre.

The first is its gleaming white opera house topped by an overblown sculpture of the  Triumph of Apollo.

people walking past the flamboyant white baroque exterior of lille opera house

The other is the ornate, albeit more restrained, La Veille Bourse .

courtyard enclosed by colonnaded orange and red baroque buildings viewed through an arch

La Veille Bourse was one of my favourite places to visit in Lille. Formerly the city’s stock exchange, this structure comprises 24 small houses arranged around an elaborate, porticoed inner courtyard, embellished with decorative plaques and stone sculptures.

Now home to a book market, La Veille Bourse has an interesting history.

Before its construction in the 1650s, most trading took place outside, and traders were at the mercy of the elements. Battling wind, rain and a damp chill during one of my days in Lille I felt their pain!

To prevent the traders from falling sick, La Veille Bourse was commissioned to provide private houses supporting trading in the coldest months.

Place du Générale-de-Gaulle (Grand Place)

people sitting at outdoor cafe tables in a square lined with old buildings

Walk through La Bourse to Lille’s beating heart, the Grand Place. Once the site of the city’s medieval market, today it’s the focal point for celebrations and a popular meeting place.

At Christmas time, it is home to a giant Ferris wheel.

lille-grand-place-at-xmas

The Déesse Column , commemorating the 1792 Austrian siege, is in the centre of the square.

More exuberant Flemish buildings flank the square, including the  La Voix du Nord  building , home to the largest newspaper in Northern France.

Climb the steps to the entrance of Théâtre du Nord for a birds-eye view of the Grand Place.

Place Rihour & Lille Christmas market

Lacking the architectural bravado of the Grand Place or Place du Théâtre, the smaller and unremarkable Place Rihour, is home to the friendly  Lille Tourist Office  and the city’s Christmas market.

stall in a xmas market with decorations and santa hats

The 18 th  Century Church of St. Etienne (L’Église Saint Etienne) is a few minutes walk southwest of Place Rihour.

This is one of France’s largest Jesuit churches and features an exquisite pulpit, sculpted by François Rude. It is crowned by angels and cherubs with Faith and Hope holding a vessel of St. Stephen’s martyrdom.

statue of angel in front of a church altar

Ten minutes southeast of the Church of St. Etienne is Lille’s cultural calling card, the Palais des Beaux-Arts .

Flanking the southern side of the vast Place de la République, this fine art gallery is second only to the Louvre in Paris in size and stature. It was established by Napoleon in the early 1800s to popularise art, its collection curated from the spoils of war.

I recommend working your way chronologically, starting at the basement level with art from the Renaissance period.

Don’t miss a pair of paintings by  Dirk Bouts  (1420 – 1475) that were once part of a triptych.

The painting to your right depicts the righteous ascending into Heaven. The souls featured in the left-hand side painting weren’t so lucky, with the dammed falling into Hell to be tortured by demons for eternity.

It is thought that the central painting of this triptych represented Judgement Day.

dirk-bouts-painting-in-palais-dex-beaux-artes-lille-france

On the upper floor, there is an impressive collection of muscular Rubens, a smattering of Sisleys and expressive Goyas. The Palais des Beaux-Arts is also home to a fine collection of Rodin sculptures, the most striking of which is Les Bourgeois de Calais.

Porte de Paris and Lille Belfry (Beffroi de Lille)

monumental gate and arch with a bell tower to its right

Porte de Paris , the final stop on our Lille walking tour, is five minutes east of the Palais des Beaux-Arts

Built by Simon Vollant in the late 17 th  Century to celebrate Louis XIV’s capture of Lille for the French, this is the most striking of Lille’s surviving city gates.

The adjacent red brick and stone Art Deco belfry rises over the city like a giant exclamation mark. At a height of 104 meters, the UNESCO-listed Beffroi de Lille is the highest civilian belfry in Europe.

aerial view of a monumental gate encircled by a road and 4-storey buildings

To climb Lille’s belfry, walk the first 100 steps and then take 300 or so steps or the elevator to the top. I recommend taking the lift up and walking down as there is information about the belfry on each floor.

Check opening hours and find out how to book here .

When is the Best Time to Visit Lille, France?

For longer days and the best chance of sunny skies, visit Lille between May and September. I was there most recently in May and basked in balmy temperatures and drank cooling beer under blue skies.

If Christmas markets are your thing, plan your visit for December (this was my first visit). Although it can be cold and damp, there is something magical about the festive lights.

How to Get to Lille

Lille has two train stations: Lille Flandres and Lille Europe. It is a ten-minute walk between the two train stations.

Most trains from other French cities and Belgium arrive at Lille Flandres station in the heart of the old town. Some TGV services go into Lille Europe , which also serves Eurostar trains from Brussels and London.

Thanks to short journey times and the central location of the train station, it’s easy to do a Lille day trip from Paris, Brussels and London. You can check train times here .

Eurotunnel  trains run from Folkestone to Calais up to four times per hour from 7 am. The last train back from Calais is at around midnight.

Alternatively, take the  car ferry from Dover to Calais , a 90-minute crossing.

There are underground car parks near the old town.

How to Get Around Lille

The best way to get around Lille is on foot. As most of the city’s attractions are close to one another, Lille lends itself beautifully to a self-guided walking tour

Lille also has an excellent bus, tram and metro network , which I used to visit La Piscine de Roubaix on my third visit. Public transport is included in the  Lille City Pass , which also includes free access to attractions and a selection of discounts and special offers.

Where to Stay in Lille

As one of France’s biggest cities, Lille is not lacking in accommodation options. However, to be in the thick of things, pick a central location near the old town.

Ibis Lille Centre Gare

I chose this 3-star hotel on my first visit to Lille for its central location close to Lille Flandres station. It’s perfect if you want a comfortable stay in a good location at an affordable price

Hotel Boa, BW Signature Collection

This 4-star hotel, where I stayed on my most recent trip to Lille, is perfect if you are looking for a quiet, centrally-located hotel with superb customer service. Its location, between Lille Flandres Station and Place de Théâtre, could not be better and the complimentary minibar a bonus.

Here are some other hotels that I have found that may suit different budgets:

Splurge – Grand Hotel Bellevue – Grand Place

This 4-star hotel is right in the thick of things on the Grand Place. A good breakfast is included in the room rate.

Budget – Hotel Lille Europe

Close to Lille-Flandres Station, this budget hotel looks terrific value and its helpful staff get a special mention in online reviews.

Thank you for reading my Lille day trip itinerary

Each time I have visited, I have been seduced by Lille’s grandiose Flemish architecture, its old town, the friendliness of its people and its hearty cuisine. For those taking a solo trip to France , it’s relatively safe and easy to explore. Although Lille may lack the immediate charm of other northern French cities such as Reims , Colmar  or  Strasbourg , dismiss it at your peril.

6 Best Day Trips from Lille

6 Best Day Trips from Lille

Lille is ideally situated for exploring north-western France and Flanders, with windswept beaches, historic towns, and the Belgian border all within day-trip distance. If you’re visiting Lille for the France Rugby World Cup 2023, why not make the most of the time between matches and take in some of the regional highlights?

Ready to explore the Belgian capital, visit WWI battle sites and memorials, and marvel over UNESCO-listed monuments? Here’s our pick of the six best day trips from Lille .

1. Arras and Lens

Indulge your inner art lover and history buff by combining these two northern France towns in one day trip. First up is historic Arras, where you can marvel at architectural landmarks—such as the UNESCO-listed Beffroi d’Arras and Flemish-style townhouses on Place des Héros—and visit WWI battlegrounds, memorials, and war tunnels used during the Battle of Arras.

Nearby, Lens has its own WWI museum, the Centre d’Histoire du Mémorial 14-18, housed in a striking black-cube building, but it’s most famous as the site of the Louvre-Lens Museum, the Louvre’s first-ever satellite museum.

Distance from Lille: 32 miles (52 km) to Arras

How to get there: Drive (45 mins) to Arras, join a tour from Lille, or take the train (59 mins to Lens and a further 13 mins to Arras)

Don’t miss: The Louvre Lens Museum

trajet tours rille

Forever synonymous with the heroic WWI evacuation of Allied troops, Dunkirk is also a lively student hub and a busy Channel port. After admiring the Flemish-style Hôtel de Ville, the Beffroi de Dunkerque belfry, and the 16th-century Church of Saint-Éloi—the few landmarks not demolished in WWII—Dunkirk’s biggest draw is its wide sandy beach.

Don’t miss the Dunkirk 1940 Museum, which chronicles the fateful events of Operation Dynamo, the LAAC modern art museum, and the Mémorial des Alliés (Allied Memorial), which stands right by the beachfront.

Distance from Lille: 47 miles (75 km)

How to get there: Drive (1 hour), join a tour from Lille, or take the train (1 hour 8 mins)

Don’t miss: The Mémorial des Alliés (Memorial to the Allies)

trajet tours rille

3. Le Touquet

On the southern cusp of the Opal Coast, at the mouth of the Canche River, Le Touquet has long been the beach getaway of choice for sun-seeking Parisians. The town’s connections with the capital are so strong that its full name is actually “Le Touquet-Paris-Plage”, and it even boasts its own Eiffel Tower sandcastle, the almost 10-metre-high Tour Paris-Plage sculpture.

Miles of sandy shores await along the coast, but you can also climb the red-brick lighthouse for a view across the Channel, head to the Parc de l’Estuaire (Estuary Park) for a walk or horseback ride through the sand dunes, or party into the early hours at the many bars, clubs, and casinos.

Distance from Lille: 93 miles (150 km)

How to get there: Drive (2 hours)

Don’t miss: Hit the beach

trajet tours rille

4. Ypres, Belgium

Just over the Belgian border, Ypres’ (Leper in Dutch) charming Old Town and medieval monuments are all but eclipsed by the importance of its WWI history. This Flemish town sits at the heart of the poppy-filled “Flanders Fields” and some of WWI’s bloodiest battlefields, and it’s impossible to pass through without feeling the weight of its history.

The Menin Gate memorial hosts its moving Last Post ceremony every evening at 8pm, and the city is surrounded by battlefields, trenches, war cemeteries, and memorials, most notably Tyne Cot Cemetery, Hill 60, and Zillebeke.

Distance from Lille: 25 miles (40 km)

How to get there: Drive (40 minutes), join a tour from Lille, or take the train (1-hour 10 minutes via Kortrijk).

Don’t miss: The poignant Last Post ceremony.

trajet tours rille

5. Bruges, Belgium

Arguably the most picturesque of all Belgian cities, Bruges is an artful jumble of medieval landmarks, fairy-tale churches, and impossibly pretty canals. Architectural wonders abound in the UNESCO-listed Old Town, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Church of our Lady in Bruges, the Market Square, and the Belfry will all have you reaching for your camera.

Hop aboard a traditional wooden boat for the most romantic views, cruising along the flower-lined canals, past rows of pastel-coloured gabled houses and leafy parks. Alternatively, hire a bike to visit the city’s windmills and Beguinage before heading back to the city to enjoy a beer tasting at one of the many brewpubs and breweries.

How to get there: Drive (1 hour 10 minutes) or take the train (1 hour 51 minutes via Brussels).

Don’t miss: A cruise along the canals.

trajet tours rille

6. Brussels, Belgium

All roads in Brussels lead to the Grand Place, and the central hub is an architectural feast with its baroque façades, gothic guild houses, and medieval townhouses crowned by the magnificent Hotel de Ville (Town Hall).

There’s plenty to fill up a day tour of the Belgian capital. Once you’ve strolled around the Grand Place (and perhaps indulged in a Belgium waffle from one of the square’s many cafés), pay a visit to the Notre Dame Du Sablon church, snap a selfie with the beloved Manneken Pis statue, and enjoy a stroll through the lush Parc Du Cinquantenaire. Don’t forget to pick up some Belgian chocolates from the artisan chocolatiers along Rue des Bouchers.

Distance from Lille: 68 miles (110 km)

How to get there: Drive (1 hour 30 mins) or take the train (34 minutes).

Don’t miss: The magnificent Grand Place.

15 people were injured in a tram crash at Universal Studios Hollywood Saturday evening.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the victims were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. KTLA, however, reported at least one person sustained critical injuries.

According to a statement from the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department, "deputies responded to the lower parking lot of Universal Studios Hollywood regarding a tour tram collision. The collision caused several passengers to fall out of the vehicle."

The trams are used in the theme park's signature Studio Tour, transporting guests through iconic Hollywood film sets. It's unclear what caused the crash, or if any other vehicles were involved but LASD tells Entertainment Weekly that the "cause of the accident is still under investigation and there is no further information at this time."

The LACFD Public Information Office confirmed the incident in a tweet , writing "at 9:05 units were dispatched to a tram accident where 15 patients were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. CHP will be the lead investigatory agency for all further inquiries."

“Saturday night on the Studio Tour, a tram collided with a guard rail while making a left turn," a spokesperson for Universal Studios said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly . "Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor."

The statement continued, "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority. We have resumed Studio Tour operations with a modified route and are reinforcing our operational and safety protocols."

Earlier this month, Universal Studios Hollywood was hit with a lawsuit stemming from a 2022 incident in which passengers claim they were stranded while riding Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, an attraction that takes guests through notable locations in  J.K. Rowling 's Wizarding World, including the Great Hall, the grounds of Hogwarts, and the Quidditch pitch.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP AUDIO: NFL draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is Detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

The unprecedented run on quarterbacks, wide receivers and pass protectors in the NFL draft's opening round pushed plenty of standout defenders down the board and allowed some of the top teams to select players who normally wouldn't fall to them. DeJean is one of the best ballhawks in this class and also one of the best punt returners available, having averaged 13.1 yards per return over the last two seasons. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings, File)

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

Associated Press writers Corey Williams and Mike Householder contributed to this report.
