Trying to figure out how to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen? You’ve come to the right place!

As a travel blogger that lives in Playa del Carmen , I’ve traveled to Playa del Carmen from Cancun too many times to count!

And I know from personal experience just how confusing, overwhelming, and stressful researching Cancun airport transportation can be.

With all the transportation services available on the internet, it can be difficult to know which ones to trust.

MY TOP PICK

Best Airport Transfer Cancun

⌚️ Don’t have time to read the full article?

The best way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is to book a private airport transfer for the safest and most reliable ride.

In this post, I’m sharing my top recommendations for the safest, most convenient, and most reliable ways to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen .

So whether you’re looking for private transportation or the best public transport options, I’ve got you covered.

Ready to find out how to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen? Let’s get started!

Getting from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

First, let’s start with some important things to know about arriving to Cancun International Airport (CUN):

Cancun to Playa del Carmen Distance

Playa del Carmen is located about 1 hour south of Cancun Airport (about 34 miles) driving directly south on the main highway 307.

It’s basically a straight shot down the highway which makes the drive from Cancun International Airport to Playa del Carmen very easy.

You might just face occasional road construction or traffic delays.

What to Expect at the Cancun Airport

It’s important to know that upon exiting Cancun Airport, you are immediately going to be bombarded by hoards of salespeople trying to sell you transportation, tours, activities, and timeshares.

This area can be extremely loud, chaotic, and overwhelming and is where many people can get taken advantage of.

There are certainly no shortage of scam artists at the airport trying to rip you off and some may even pretend to be your transportation company.

You’ll want to be prepared for this and my advice would be to just make a beeline past all of these people and only look for the official signs for your chosen airport transportation provider.

If someone approaches you, be cautious and don’t believe what they say unless you’re 100% sure they are the official transportation representative.

Best Transportation Options from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

There are various options for getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen whether you’re looking for something cheap, a shared shuttle, private transportation, or a rental car.

It’s important to know that Uber at Cancun Airport is not available (or safe) so you’ll need to pick one of the options below!

MY TOP PICKS

🚐 Best Private Transfer: Cancun Airport Transportation ($95 USD) 🚍 Best Shared Transfer: Shared Shuttle ($60 USD) 🚌 Cheapest Option: ADO Bus ($15 USD) 🚗 Best Rental Car Service: Discover Cars 🚕 Taxi: Not recommended

All-Inclusive Resort Transportation

First and foremost I would check with your hotel or resort to see if airport transportation is included in your stay.

Some of the higher-end all-inclusive Riviera Maya resorts will include complimentary airport pickup for guests so be sure to check your hotel package or call or email the resort to see if that’s an option.

For example, Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcaret Arte offer free round-trip airport transfers for guests.

The Hoteles Xcaret bus parked at Cancun Airport

Private Transportation from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

For the quickest, most hassle-free, and easiest option, you’ll want to book private transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen.

This is honestly what I usually do and recommend for anyone visiting Playa del Carmen because it is just so convenient having a private shuttle pick up and dropoff with door-to-door transportation service.

After a long flight, it’s the fastest way to go and definitely a nice treat to be picked up and get to your hotel or resort as quickly as possible. Because…the beach and margaritas are waiting! 🍹

Private Transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

I recommend booking with Cancun Airport Transportation , which is a trusted company that provides private and reliable airport transfers with convenient online booking options and friendly bilingual drivers.

Pricing options for Cancun to Playa del Carmen private transportation are as follows:

  • Private Van (up to 3 pax): $95 USD one way or $161 USD round trip
  • Luxury SUV (up to 6 pax): $160 USD one way or $270 USD round trip
  • Premium SUV (up to 5 pax): $369 USD one way or $625 USD round trip
  • Group Shuttle (up to 16 pax): $160 USD one way or $270 USD round trip
  • Limo Service (up to 6 pax): $349 USD one way or $600 USD round trip
  • Limo Service (up to 10 pax): $425 USD one way or $674 USD round trip

Cancun Airport Transportation Private Vehicle

Note: Pricing may vary depending on where you’re staying if it’s further outside of the normal zones.

While a private Cancun airport transfer has a higher price, it’s the most convenient way to go with someone waiting for you when you get off the plane and not having to deal with the added stress of multiple transport options.

Travelista Tip: You’ll get the best price by booking a round trip transfer ahead of time for $161 USD, which comes out to $80.50 each way for up to 3 passengers.

Cancun Airport Transportation Luxury SUV

Shared Transportation from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Another slightly less expensive option would to book a shared Cancun airport shuttle to Playa del Carmen , which costs around $60 USD each way for a single person.

Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen shared shuttles run frequently from the airport and typically hold up to 15 passengers.

Each passenger will then get dropped off at their hotel or resort along the route to Playa del Carmen.

While this is a cheaper option, the downside is that it can often take a long time to get to your resort with so many stops along the way.

The normal 1-hour ride can often turn into 2+ hours depending on how many people there are to drop off.

And while this is a slightly cheaper option, these companies honestly don’t have the best reviews and you’ll likely have to wait around for a long time at the airport.

It really only makes sense if you’re a solo traveler and want to go directly to your hotel. Otherwise, for couples or larger groups, it is around the same price to just book the private transportation .

ADO Bus from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

The ADO Airport Bus is the cheapest way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

At only $250 pesos (~$15 USD) each way, the ADO bus is safe, comfortable, and provides great value for the money.

The charter-style ADO bus is very large and comfortable with air conditioning, restrooms, and televisions onboard.

The travel time from the airport is about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Playa del Carmen ADO

ADO Bus Schedule s

ADO buses runs roughly every 30 minutes and is the most trusted airport bus service in the region.

Service starts around 8:00AM and ends around 11:30PM. Check the ADO website for exact departure times.

ADO Tickets

Tickets can be booked online in advance on the ADO website or Busbud but I wouldn’t recommend doing this from Cancun because it’s very hard to predict what time you’ll actually be leaving the airport.

Customs and Immigration at the Cancun Airport usually has insanely long lines that you’ll likely get stuck waiting in and miss your scheduled bus. Not to mention, possible baggage claim delays.

Cancun Airport Immigration Line

From my experience, it’s best to purchase your ADO tickets directly at the red ADO kiosks that are located in each terminal right after exiting baggage claim.

If for some reason the kiosk is closed, bus tickets can also be purchased outside at the ADO stand directly in front of the departing buses.

Credit cards are accepted at the counter only so I would recommend having cash on hand (pesos or USD) in case the counter is closed.

ADO Counter Cancun Airport

ADO Departure Location

From there, exit the airport and head to the bus terminal parking all the way in the back behind the hoards of salespeople.

You should see the red ADO stand where you can wait for your scheduled bus.

The bus destination will be on the reader board at the front of the bus so look for the ones that say “Playa del Carmen.”

Large luggage can be stowed under the bus and you’ll want to keep all of your valuables with you on your lap or under the seat in front of you.

ADO Cancun Aeropuerto

ADO Station in Downtown Playa del Carmen

The ADO bus will drop you off at the Playa del Carmen Turistica Station directly on 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) and Avenida Juarez in downtown Playa del Carmen.

From the Playa del Carmen bus station, you can walk if you’re staying close by or there is a line of taxis waiting to take you to your final destination.

Travelista Tip: If you don’t have a ton of luggage, I would recommend walking a few blocks towards 10th Avenue, where you can grab a taxi at a much cheaper rate.

For a detailed guide on taking the ADO bus, see my full step-by-step Playa del Carmen ADO guide !

Playa del Carmen Turistica ADO Station

Rental Car from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

If you want to explore some more off-the-beaten-path locations during your trip, you can consider booking a rental car for the freedom to get around Playa del Carmen on your own.

Having a rental car is a good option if you want to get out and explore Riviera Maya’s many attractions and day trips.

You can visit the region’s incredible cenotes , ancient Mayan Ruins, beautiful beaches , and nearby towns in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cancun International Airport Sign

Rental Car Pickup from Cancun Airport

There are several rental car companies available at the Cancun Airport but I would be cautious about this option.

There are a lot of horror stories about Cancun Airport car rentals including long wait times, not getting the car you booked, and extreme upcharges for insurance.

You may see advertisements online for Mexico car rentals as low as $1 per day but then you’ll get nailed for all the added fees and insurance premiums.

If you decide to rent a car from the airport, do your research and book online in advance.

I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

Just be sure to read the fine print and check reviews as rental car scams are unfortunately common in Mexico and much more prevalent at the Cancun Airport.

Rental Car Counters at Cancun International Airport Terminal 4

Taxi from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

I really wouldn’t recommend taking a taxi from the Cancun Airport if you can avoid it.

Regular taxis are not permitted to pick up at the Cancun Airport so only official airport taxis are allowed.

This means they are often extremely overpriced and will require a lot of haggling with taxi drivers to negotiate a price to your destination.

And with many scam artists pretending to be “official operators”, it’s difficult to know which drivers are actually safe and reliable.

Airport taxis are where a lot of people get ripped off and can end up paying $100 USD or more just to get to Playa del Carmen.

Your best bet is just to book the private transfers for $95 USD for a safe and hassle-free experience.

How to Get from Downtown Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Alternatively, if you want to get to Playa del Carmen from downtown Cancun , there are a few different options available.

Downtown Cancun to Playa del Carmen drive time is a little over 1 hour but you can pretty much expect there to be some traffic delays in Cancun. The total distance is around 42 miles (68 km).

Similar to the ADO Airport Bus, the Cancun to Playa del Carmen ADO Bus is a comfortable, charter-style bus that runs between the two cities.

The trip takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and there are 3-4 departures every hour. The cost is just $108 pesos (~$6 USD).

Pick-up is at the ADO bus station in Cancun and drop-off is at the Playa del Carmen Turistica Station in downtown Playa del Carmen on Fifth Avenue.

The Cancun to Playa del Carmen bus is an affordable and comfortable way to travel between Cancun and Playa del Carmen and a great option if you don’t have a car.

Tickets can be purchased on the ADO website (Spanish only), on Busbud (English), or directly at the ADO station.

ADO Bus Playa del Carmen to Cancun

Playa Express

The Playa Express is a large, Mercedes Sprinter-style van that runs continuously between Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

Originating at the ADO Station in Cancun, the Playa Express does not have specific bus stops along the way but rather picks people up off the side of the highway and drops them off upon request.

The cost to travel from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is around $50 pesos (~$2.50 USD) and can be paid upon exiting.

For drop-off, you’ll need to tell the driver where you’d like to get off if it’s before the final stop in Playa del Carmen.

Playa Express Public Transportation

The most economical option via public transportation would be to take a colectivo from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Colectivos can also be picked up near the ADO Station in Cancun and usually the final destination is written on the windshield.

Colectivos operate in the exact same way as the Playa Express however the white colectivo vans are typically older, smaller, and more crowded. They cost slightly less than the Playa Express but are not as comfortable.

Colectivo from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

If you prefer more private transportation, taxis are widely available from downtown Cancun as well from the Cancun hotel zone to Playa del Carmen.

Taking a Cancun to Playa del Carmen taxi is much safer and more reliable than taking one from the airport.

You can expect the taxi cost from Cancun to Playa del Carmen to be about $1000 pesos (~$50 USD) or more each way.

FAQs about Getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Cancun-Playa del Carmen transportation:

Uber in Playa del Carmen is currently not available or safe to use . While legislation was passed in January 2023 allowing Uber to operate in the region, it remains dangerous to use Uber or any ride-sharing service. Taxi drivers have always strongly opposed Uber in Mexico , and there have been several reports of violence against Uber drivers and passengers. So even if your Uber app will work, it’s not safe to use Uber in the entire Riviera Maya region of Mexico including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

A shared shuttle from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is around $60 USD per person with dropoff at your hotel. Alternatively, the ADO Airport bus costs $250 pesos (~$15 USD) per person with a dropoff in downtown Playa del Carmen.

No, you typically cannot pay for taxi service with a credit card in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Make sure to have enough cash on hand (pesos or USD) and always confirm the price upfront before getting in the car.

No, it is not customary to tip taxi drivers in Mexico.

While not required, it’s common to tip private drivers at the end of the private transfer service from Cancun to Playa del Carmen . Around 10% of the service price would be an acceptable tip. Pretty much all of the drivers I’ve had have been extremely friendly and professional so you will likely want to give them a tip.

Tips for Traveling to Playa del Carmen from Cancun

Follow these tips for a safe experience when traveling to Playa del Carmen from Cancun:

  • Don’t get distracted by the salespeople at the airport: Upon exiting the airport, it’s best to just make a beeline past all the hoards of people trying to sell you transportation, tours, activities, and timeshares. Many will try to scam you by pretending to be your transportation company. Be on the lookout for an official sign with your pre-arranged transportation company logo or head all the way to the back for the ADO bus.
  • Have cash on hand : When arriving in Mexico, it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand (pesos or USD) to pay for the ADO bus or to tip the luggage attendant or your private driver.
  • Keep an eye on your luggage and keep valuables with you: Keep an eye on your luggage at all times to make sure it’s actually placed in the vehicle. Never place valuables in the trunk of the van or underneath the bus. It’s best to always keep your purse, wallet, travel documents, and any valuables with you in your lap.

From Cancun to Playa del Carmen: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Meagan Drillinger Updated Apr 14, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Cancun may have long held the title as one of the top beach destinations in Mexico, and certainly the top beach destination on the Caribbean coast. But just 40 miles (an hour's drive) to the south is another beach destination that has exploded in the last decade or so.

Playa del Carmen was once a sleepy fishing village, shrouded in mangrove jungle, with a sugary stretch of shoreline. In the beginning, it grew as a small travel destination for backpacking hippies and adventurous European, Argentinian, and Israeli travelers – many of whom showed up and decided to stay. Today, Playa del Carmen is a cultural capital in its own right, with a thriving shopping, culinary, and entertainment scene, and palpable influence from all over the world.

This is a wonderful place to visit in Mexico , whether it's for a day trip from Cancun, or as a standalone vacation. Depending on your travel style and budget, it is easy to find a convenient and comfortable way to get between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, whether it's a scheduled coach bus, a private transfer, a taxi, or via renting a car.

If you're traveling to Playa del Carmen, whether from Cancun proper or from the Cancun International airport, here are four of the best ways to get there.

On This Page:

  • From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Taxi
  • From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Bus
  • From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Private Transfer
  • From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Car
  • From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Colectivo

1. From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Taxi

Sunrise at a beautiful resort in Playa del Carmen

The drive from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is a straight shot down Mexico's Highway 307, the popular tourism highway that hugs the Caribbean coastline all the way down to Quintana Roo's capital, Chetumal, which sits on the border with Belize. It's a well-trafficked route and one that taxis take on a daily basis. A taxi trip between Cancun and Playa del Carmen will be approximately an hour. It is safe, comfortable, and convenient.

The ride will cost roughly $50 from the Hotel Zone. If coming from the airport, prices will be upwards of $75, but if you require round-trip transportation it's possible to negotiate a lower rate.

Be sure to stop at the taxi counters inside the airport. Private taxi lines are not allowed at the Cancun airport, so you will have to book it with a taxi company inside, after baggage claim. You can book your private taxi ride ahead of time online, as well, which sometimes has lower rates than if you book it upon arrival.

There is no Uber in Cancun. Travelers and residents rely on the local taxi cab companies. Your hotel can easily help you arrange for one. Some accept plastic, but it is always better to have cash on you, preferably in pesos to get the best rate.

You are not expected to tip 20 percent, but tipping a few extra pesos is always appreciated.

2. From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Bus

Aerial view of Playa del Carmen

The cheapest way to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun is by bus . The coach bus system in Mexico is wonderful - it is reliable, safe, comfortable, clean, and, most importantly, cheap.

Buses allow you to pre-select your seats, and have air-conditioning and plenty of space underneath to store luggage. Whether you're coming from Cancun city or the Cancun International Airport, buses travel down frequently to Playa del Carmen every day of the week.

From the Cancun International Airport: After passing through customs and baggage claim, travelers will find the ADO bus counter – ADO is the name of the bus company in this part of Mexico. ADO booths can be found in all of the terminals.

Buses from the airport depart every half hour or so. The trip between the airport and Playa del Carmen is direct and drops passengers off at the ADO bus station near Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen. Tickets are typically less than $10.

From Cancun: From the main ADO bus terminal in Cancun (near Puerto Cancun), travelers can grab the bus to Playa del Carmen. Buses run every hour and drop passengers at the Fifth Avenue terminal. Tickets are typically less than $3.

Passengers can purchase tickets online or at any ADO bus counter.

3. From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Private Transfer

Colorful flags in downtown Playa del Carmen

Another option from the airport is to set up a private transfer ahead of time. Travelers like this because it can all be arranged before you land in Cancun, and they enjoy the security of knowing that a trusted representative will be waiting to meet them and take them directly to their destination in Playa del Carmen.

Coming2 is one of the top shuttle transfer companies from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. It's affordable and includes hotel pickup and drop-off (at selected hotels) in air-conditioned vehicles.

Once you have arrived at the airport, exit baggage claim and find the Coming2 employee who will have a sign with your name on it. Coming2 employees wear blue pants and white and green shirts, as well as a green and red vest. They will contact your driver and bring you directly to the vehicle.

It is possible to book your return transfer, as well. You can book your transfer online before you leave your departure city and a confirmation will be sent to you.

If you are staying at a resort in Playa del Carmen, many work with their own preferred private transfer companies, as well. It is possible to book transportation through your hotel, and they will send you the details for which company to look for. Private transfers, as well as group transfers are available. Private transfers tend to be more expensive, but you won't have to wait for other passengers.

4. From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Car

Beachfront resorts at Playa del Carmen

Travelers who want the ultimate in schedule flexibility can choose to rent a car and drive themselves from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, as well.

As mentioned before, the road from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is direct, in excellent condition, and very safe. The total drive time is roughly an hour, and Cancun has several rental car options within the city, at the airport, and even through many hotels.

Keep in mind that rental companies will often post fares online that appear to be incredibly cheap - some for even as low as $1 per day. But these online travel sites do not factor in the insurance costs that rental companies will require you to purchase. Plan to spend anywhere from $30 and upwards per day on a rental car, depending on the season. It's never a bad idea to spring for the most protection, either.

5. From Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Colectivo

City Hall Square, Playa del Carmen

Of course, one of the most cost-effective ways to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun is to travel by colectivo. Colectivos are shared minivans that are a popular way for locals to travel all around Mexico. Prices are typically far cheaper than even a bus ride , and you can have more flexibility in where you hop off, as colectivos will make more stops in between that buses usually do not.

To get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen by colectivo, visitors will want to take the Playa Express vans, which sit in front of the ADO Cancun bus station and will drop you off in the heart of Playa del Carmen. Prices are usually around US$2.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen: How to Get There + Tips

Home » Blog » Mexico » Cancun to Playa del Carmen: How to Get There + Tips

Getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen requires road travel and involves some planning and logistics. There are several options to get there, so we’ve put together this guide with our suggestions and tips.

Playa del Carmen Beach Mexico

With its fantastic beaches, ideal location, and culture that effortlessly blends bustling activity with a relaxing escape, Playa del Carmen – or simply “Playa,” as it’s known locally – is an inviting destination.

Interestingly, it attracts many digital nomads alongside beachgoers, partiers, and other vacationers.

This could be because although there’s always something exciting going on, it’s easy to escape everything and relax on the beach. Or maybe because Playa del Carmen is situated right on the coast between Cancun and Tulum, with Cozumel just a ferry ride away.

It’s also easy to find English speakers in Playa, so you won’t feel totally lost even if you don’t speak great Spanish!

Regardless of the reason, if you’re headed to Playa del Carmen, you will almost certainly land at the Cancun International Airport (CUN). Fortunately, getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen requires just an hour and some fairly straightforward ground transportation.

Figuring out these logistics can be a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you’ve never been to Playa. That’s where we come in! Read on for all the different options you have to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, including our preferred methods and which ones we think you should avoid.

Before you leave the airport in Cancun

We could go on and on about all the benefits of having cell service while you travel (especially abroad!). It generally makes traveling easier, but it’s also safer and gives you some peace of mind.

The Cancun airport doesn’t have anywhere to buy a local SIM card, (you’ll have to make a separate stop for that), which we highly recommend!

TelCel is hands down the best and most common SIM provider in Mexico with the best coverage and you can pick up a local TelCel SIM card at any Oxxo convenience store location. They are on just about every corner in Mexico so you’ll easily be able to find one on the road from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

If you want the peace of mind of having data immediately upon leaving the airport, you can download an eSIM using Airalo . You can connect to the free wifi at the airport to download your eSIM from Airalo, and then you’ll have instant access to mobile data.

Note: Your phone will have to be compatible with eSIMs. Iphone models 11 and above are.

Airalo offers an easy way to stay connected for an affordable price (though it’s actually quite expensive in Mexico as compared to buying a physical SIM card), and eliminates the need to stress about searching the streets of Cancun for a place to buy a local SIM card.

ATMs in Mexico

We also recommend taking out some local cash (Mexican pesos) from an ATM before you leave the airport. We do this anytime we’re traveling internationally, just to have some cash on hand in case we need it as a backup.

We NEVER use currency exchanges when traveling as they won’t give you the best exchange rate and always take a pretty big cut off the top as their fee. Plus, we don’t like traveling with large sums of cash.

Tip: When using an ATM anywhere in Mexico, just be sure to decline the currency conversion rate offered by the ATM service. When you do this, you’re choosing to go with the rate set by your bank instead. Generally banks will give you a better exchange rate than ATMs.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen by bus

bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

The ADO bus is one of our favorite ways to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. In fact, we think it’s your best option if you don’t have a rental car. It’s very affordable, comfortable, relatively quick, and easy to figure out.

ADO buses are modern and clean, and they have plenty of space where you can put your bags in the cargo area underneath. This is not a convenience you’ll find with other options like a colectivo, which is one of the reasons it’s our recommended way for getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Where to catch the ADO bus from the Cancun airport

bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Most international flights into Cancun will arrive at Terminal 3 or Terminal 4. Both terminals have ADO pickups, so you won’t have to worry about hauling your stuff across the airport.

Buses will pick up in the parking lots, just outside the Arrivals airport exit at both terminals.

Terminal 3:

As you exit the terminal into the parking lot area, you will see a Margaritaville stand selling drinks on your right. Walk past that and you will see the red ADO bus kiosk just beyond, further out in the parking lot.

Terminal 4:

There are two exits at this terminal, one for friends and family pick-ups and the other for taxis and buses. Exit left towards the buses. You will see the red ADO kiosk set up in the parking lot in front of the bus stalls.

Where to buy tickets for the ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen?

ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

As you exit the airport, you’ll walk through a gauntlet of people vying for your attention, trying to convince you to use their transportation or tour services. Just politely ignore them and keep moving and look for the red ADO counter.

If you don’t see an ADO counter inside (there is only an ADO counter inside in one of the terminals), look for an ADO kiosk set up outside in the parking lot. Note that the counters inside the airport take cash or card, but the kiosks outside are cash-only, so it’s a good idea to take out some Mexican pesos from an ATM before leaving the airport.

How much does an ADO bus ticket cost from Cancun to Playa del Carmen?

cost of ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

The price should be 225 MXN (about $12 USD) for a one way ticket from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. (It just a bit more if you are continuing on to Tulum instead of departing in Playa del Carmen.)

The ADO bus tickets are time-specific, so you will want to make sure you have enough time to get out to the parking lot if the next bus is soon. You won’t need to worry about this if you are purchasing your ticket from the parking lot kiosk as the driver will see you and wait.

Simply tell the attendant you’re going to Playa and they’ll print you a ticket. You’ll then show your ticket (don’t lose it or crumple it up!) to get on the bus and find your assigned seat, noted with “asiento.”

How often do the ADO buses run from Cancun to Playa del Carmen?

Buses from Cancun to Playa del Carmen run frequently, every 20-30 minutes, so you shouldn’t have to wait long for the next bus.

Once you’re actually on the bus, the trip goes fairly quickly. You’ll likely stop at other terminals to pick up other passengers, but you should be in Playa in a little over an hour. There is only one bus drop-off point in Playa del Carmen, on 5th Avenue , so it’s easy to figure out where you need to hop off. From here, you can take a local taxi or walk to your accommodation.

Taking the ADO bus back to the Cancun airport from Playa del Carmen

bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

You can purchase bus tickets back to the airport from both ADO bus terminals in Playa del Carmen, on 5th Avenue and on 20th Ave and Calle 12 Nte .

The bus will pick up from the 5th Ave. station first, then swing around to the 20th Ave. station before heading straight to the Cancun Airport. It will stop at all terminals in the Cancun airport for drop-offs.

It’s a good idea to show up at one of the stations the day before to check the time tables and purchase your return bus ticket in person. You can pay with cash or card at the window and the cost will be 225 MXN one way.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen by colectivo

colectivo from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

If you’re trying to stick to a shoestring budget while traveling through Mexico (hey, we’ve been there!), the colectivo will be your best bet — but don’t expect the ride to be particularly comfortable.

The colectivo costs about 40-60 MXN ($2-3 USD), so it’s definitely the cheapest option to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, but that low fare comes with some trade-offs. The biggest is that the small vans don’t have A/C, and they also don’t have bag storage. So not only will you be hot, you’ll also have your bags in your lap for the entire ride.

Additionally, the colectivo doesn’t run directly from the airport, so you’ll have to take a bus from there to downtown Cancun. You can find the Playa Express colectivo right in front of the ADO downtown Cancun bus station. Once there, you can grab a colectivo to Playa.

Although this option is ultra-cheap, taking a bus to downtown and then taking the colectivo from Cancun to Playa del Carmen will take about twice as long as taking an ADO bus directly from the airport.

The ADO bus is a few dollars more expensive, but the colectivo takes twice the time and is less comfortable and less convenient. Most people find it well worth paying the extra $10 or so to take the ADO bus to get to Playa quicker and more comfortably.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen by rental car

Car rental in Mexico

Getting a rental car in Cancun can be a good option, but we really only recommend it if you plan to do a lot of driving to explore the Yucatan. If you plan on just hanging out in Playa del Carmen and enjoying the beach (which is a fantastic option!), it’s probably better to save some money and take one of the cheaper public transportation options.

A rental car unquestionably gives you more freedom to explore and take day trips from Playa, but you’ll want to check first if your accommodation offers free parking.

If you are interested, we put together a complete guide to getting a car rental in Mexico . This guide will go over everything you should expect from a rental car, where to get the best rates and tips for saving-money and driving in Mexico.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen by private shuttle

Shuttle from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

A private shuttle is the most stress-free and comfortable way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. This is an especially great option for families or groups traveling together who can split the cost (or anyone who isn’t worried about their budget!).

Not only are private shuttles easy, but they’re also the fastest way to get to Playa, as the ride is a door-to-door trip rather than having to make stops in between. It should take just under an hour.

Most private shuttle companies in Cancun have bilingual drivers, so you should be riding with someone who can speak at least some English. This is great to know if your Spanish isn’t quite up to par, but we also highly encourage you to learn some conversational words and phrases before you visit.

You get a significantly nicer vehicle with a private shuttle compared to other transportation methods, typically a newer vehicle with A/C and plenty of room. Your driver will greet you at the airport exit, load up your bags, and swiftly get you on your way to your accommodation in Playa.

There are several private shuttle companies to choose from, so be sure to do some research and book your trip before arriving. Here are a few solid options you may want to consider, all of which include a bilingual driver, A/C, private transportation, and proper insurance.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen road signs

(All prices listed in USD)

CUN Shuttle

  • Up to 3 passengers: $70 one-way or $125 round trip
  • Up to 6 passengers: $99 one-way or $175 round trip
  • Up to 16 passengers: $120 one way or $220 round trip

CUN Shuttle also offers sightseeing and adventure tours in the Cancun area. This could be a great option if you want to stretch your trip a bit and see more of the region. Tour options include Mayan ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula and snorkeling in Cancun.

Cancun Private Shuttle

  • Up to 3 passengers: $55 one-way or $100 round trip
  • Up to 6 passengers: $60 one-way or $110 round trip
  • Up to 14 passengers: $120 one-way or $220 round trip

Something unique that Cancun Private Shuttle offers is a quick 10-minute grocery stop before arriving at your hotel or accommodation. (This is super convenient if you’ll be staying at an Airbnb and won’t have your own transportation.) The company also has premium Chevy Suburbans that can accommodate larger groups, but they’re also significantly more expensive than standard vehicles.

Cancun Airport Transfers

  • Up to 7 passengers: $43 one-way or $84 round trip
  • Up to 14 passengers: $99 one-way or $168 round trip

This shuttle service is operated by the Cancun airport itself, so it’s typically the most flexible option. They have several different vehicles to choose from and can handle large groups if needed.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen by taxi

taxi from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

You can almost always find taxis for travel within cities/towns or to nearby destinations, but taxi prices in Mexico are pretty steep compared to other transportation options. As a general rule, taxis from the Cancun Airport have set rates controlled by the taxi company, so there will be no negotiating on price.

Also, unlike other airports, taxis from the Cancun airport must be pre-arranged and prepaid inside the airport. You can do this after you pick up your baggage and just before you exit.

It won’t be hard to find someone as there will be plenty of people offering you a taxi as you exit. Only official airport taxi services are allowed at the Cancun airport so you don’t have to worry about finding the right one.

Just walk up to someone offering taxis and ask about the price. They will have a rate sheet for you, and remember these prices are non-negotiable. Generally a ride from Cancun to Playa del Carmen will cost about $80 USD.

You will pay with the representative inside and get a receipt for your ride. The nice thing is, that you can pay this fare with a credit card. (If you’re hailing a taxi on the street in Mexico, they will all be cash-only.)

Once you have your ride receipt, the representative will direct you outside where you can find your taxi and be on your way. The drive shouldn’t take more than an hour tops, likely it’ll be closer to 45 minutes.

Airport taxis are the most expensive method for a solo traveler and definitely our least recommended way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

How to Get From Cancun to Playa Del Carmen

Susan Laurent

Did you know that Playa del Carmen doesn’t have its own airport with direct international flights? Yes, the nearest airport to reach this beautiful destination is the Cancun International Airport. From there, you can either reserve a private vehicle (our recommended option), share a shuttle, take a bus, rent a car, or use a taxi.

How Far is Playa Del Carmen from Cancun?

The distance between Cancun International Airport and Playa del Carmen is roughly 34 miles (54.7 kilometers). This translates to traveling 45 minutes by car.

If you are traveling from downtown Cancun to Playa del Carmen, the distance is approximately 40 miles (about 64 kilometers), and the travel time may last up to 1 hour.

Whichever your starting location is, you’ll travel through the stunning seaside highway, Federal Highway 307. The route is pleasant and straightforward, and the highway is well-maintained. Here’s a map showing the route from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Arriving at Cancun International Airport: What to Expect?

When travellers land at Cancun Airport and want to get to Playa del Carmen, they should search for the official transportation counters located on the airport grounds.

These offices are run by licensed transportation companies, and they are the safest place to make arrangements and book transport. Always schedule transportation with these official providers, either online or at the airport — this is very important to remember to avoid getting scammed.

Cancun International Airport

Scam artists are widespread at airports, and some may pose as representatives of reputable transport providers. Simply stroll past these people to look for signs of your preferred airport transportation.

Legitimate transportation services will have their counters, official billboards, logos, and uniforms. If someone says they’re your ride, ask to see proof of your reservation. Legitimate drivers should have a confirmation of your booking if you are their customer.

1. Hire a Private Vehicle from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen

After a long flight, you will definitely want to get to your Playa del Carmen resort as fast as possible. The most hassle-free way to do that is by booking private transportation!

The best option for private vehicles is Cancun Airport Transportation and you can choose from regular vans, premium or luxury SUVs, group shuttles, handicapped-accessible vehicles, and limousines.

To book a ride, you need to visit their website , specify your go-to destination, arrival time, and the number of passengers (there’s a ride option for up to 16 passengers). You can also request refreshments when making your online reservation so that the drivers can get them for you if you’re thirsty after your flight.

The regular van would be your most economical option for a private ride, starting at $85 for a one-way ticket, while the limo is the most expensive, starting at $349.

Traveling from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen should take no longer than 1 hour. When the traffic is at its lowest, you may arrive at your resort in as quick as 45 minutes. Still, everything depends on the specific day of your arrival and how busy the highway gets.

We like this option the most because there’s nothing better than the feeling of safety and comfort it provides after a flight. Air travel can be tiring, especially on longer journeys. Yes, private rides may be more expensive than a shared shuttle or bus, but this transportation option is exclusively for you and your travel group. Plus, you’ll arrive much faster in Playa del Carmen because the driver won’t have to wait for other passengers or drop them off at their desired destinations.

2. Hire a Shared Shuttle

If you want a more budget-friendly option to get from the airport to your hotel in Playa del Carmen, consider taking a shared shuttle.

These shared shuttles are the same as the private vans and SUVs, however, instead of having the ride all for yourself, you share it with multiple passengers (up to 16 passengers per shuttle).

Cancun Shuttles is our top pick for a shared shuttle. You can pre-book your reservation for this service online on their website, you just need to specify your arrival at Cancun International Airport and where you wish to be dropped off.

Your meeting point with Cancun Shuttles will depend on your arrival terminal, also known as the gate or section of the airport where arriving passengers depart. Cancun Shuttles usually provides this information on the confirmation letter once you order your ticket. If not, contact their Customer Care service.

For a one-way trip, Cancun Shuttles will charge you around $29 USD and you’ll travel for around 1.5 hours, depending on how many passengers need to be dropped off along the way.

We like shared shuttles for a couple of reasons. First, a shared shuttle works the same way as a private vehicle — you’ll have a ride waiting for you at the airport that will drop you off wherever you desire. Second, it’s way cheaper. Third, this is a great option for solo travelers who want to be dropped off directly in front of their hotel but don’t want to splurge on a private ride just for themselves.

But remember, if you’re traveling with two or three companions, booking a private ride for $85 can be cheaper and more time-efficient than paying $29 per person on a shared shuttle.

3. Bus Ride From Cancun to Playa Del Carmen

Many tourists don’t want to spend extra money for a super comfortable and door-to-door ride to their hotel. So, they choose to take the bus!

If that budget-conscious traveler is you, then we have a top-notch recommendation for you: ADO Buses , Mexico’s largest and most reputable bus company.

 ADO Buses

What we love about this company is that they have daily airport departures every 30 minutes, from 8:00 AM up until 11:30 PM. This means that whenever you arrive at Cancun airport, you’ll know that you won’t be waiting for more than 30 minutes for an ADO bus to arrive.

A one-way bus ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs less than $15. The simplest method is to purchase your ADO tickets at the red ADO kiosks located just after baggage claim, or at the ADO stands located outside, directly in front of the departure buses. It’s a good idea to have some pesos or dollars on hand in case the credit card terminals aren’t working.

You can also book the ticket online on the provider’s website, however, keep in mind that you’ll need to go through Customs and Immigration and wait for your luggage, which can cause delays and possibly make you miss your scheduled bus ride.

The ADO bus will drop you off at the Playa del Carmen Turistica Station, from which you can take a taxi, local bus, or walk if your hotel is close by.

If you choose this transport option, don’t worry, you won’t have to sacrifice comfort — ADO buses are famed for their spacious seating and air-conditioned and clean interiors equipped with restrooms and TVs.

4. Rent a Car from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen

If you are looking for the freedom to go on road trips and explore different areas throughout Riviera Maya, then renting a car might be the ideal option for you.

Renting a car from the Cancun airport couldn’t be easier. There’s a rental center right at the airport with international and local rental companies all in one place. You can also plan ahead and book your car rental online.

Rented Car

If you prefer to pre-book online, we recommend DiscoverCars . This is where you’ll find all the major rental companies listed in one place, so it’s easy to compare services and prices.

The prices are the same as renting from the official websites of the rental agencies, with the lowest cost to rent a car being $20 per day. DiscoverCars just gives you one advantage: they offer regular discounts, so you can get some cars for cheaper than what you’d pay booking directly from a rental company.

The most recognized car rental companies in Cancun that you can find on both DiscoverCars and at the airport are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Economy Rent a Car, Enterprise, Europcar, Firefly, Flexways, GreenMotion, Hertz, Keddy, Mex Rent-a-Car, NU Car Rentals, National, Routes Car Rental, Sixt, and Thrifty.

Whether you rent directly from the airport, through the rental company’s official website, or via DiscoverCars is up to you. DiscoverCars is handy because it lists all the options in one place and you may grab a discount.

Just make sure you comply with all the requirements for renting a car, such as having a valid driver’s license, being of age, possessing a credit card with sufficient funds on it, and Mexican car insurance. We have a whole article on how to rent a car in Cancun , so make sure to check it out!

5. Hire a Taxi

Taxi

We recommend taxis as your last resort for arriving in Playa del Carmen because they are the least convenient option. Here’s why.

Cancun airport is overflown by unlicensed taxi drivers who wait by the arrival gates and offer rides to tourists. If they are successful in luring a passenger to join them, they wind up charging $100 USD or more to take them to Playa del Carmen.

On the other hand, if you call a reputable taxi service like Uber, the taxi driver will be unable to access the airport because standard city cabs aren’t permitted to enter the airport grounds. This implies that if you call one, you must leave the airport, and we mean actually leave the airport, to the main highway, which is around two kilometers away.

Cancun International Airport has its own personal taxis — these are the ones you should look for. The taxi drivers wear a uniform and possess an official Cancun Airport ID badge. On the cars, you should look for a badge permit placed somewhere around the windshields. If you can’t detect these signs of legitimacy, don’t enter the car for your own safety.

Cancun International Airport allows online or on-spot taxi reservations. We recommend reserving your taxi ride online because the fees are significantly lower than taking a random taxi that you haven’t pre-arranged. To put things into perspective, a pre-booked taxi ride to Playa del Carmen will cost you roughly $45, whereas hopping into an on-spot cab will cost you $75.

When you make an online reservation, you will receive an e-mail confirmation letter with additional pick-up instructions. You’ll need your pick-up instructions to ensure you’re in the proper vehicle with your designated driver. Always keep this confirmation accessible because it contains contact information that can come in handy in case of misunderstanding.

Traveling From the City of Cancun to Playa Del Carmen

Are you intending to spend a few days in Cancun before heading to Playa del Carmen? Excellent, here are your transit options:

Take an ADO bus: They pick up at the Cancun ADO bus station and depart every 30 minutes. You can buy a ticket online or at the station.

Take an Uber: You can order an Uber online through their website to come pick you up from the location you desire. Expect to pay around $70 to Playa del Carmen, depending on your pick-up location.

Take a private ride: If you are traveling in a group, you can request a private vehicle exactly as you would at Cancun Airport. We recommend Kalido , a reputable, high-rated company with great-looking SUVs.

Public transportation via “Playa Express” and/or “Colectivo”: Both companies function in the same manner as ADO buses; however, these are vans rather than buses. Their pick-up point is near Cancun’s ADO Station, and the final route is frequently written on the windshield — here’s a map view of Playa Express and Colectivo . These rides should cost no more than $2.5.

If you enjoy driving on your own and don’t mind spending a bit more for comfort, book a private vehicle from Cancun airport — our top pick!

Our second recommendation is the shared shuttle — this is an excellent option if you want to save some money and don’t mind riding with someone else.

Are you a budget-conscious traveler? Then the bus is a great option for you, but keep in mind that a bus ride takes longer.

Renting a car is also a great option to consider, but only if you book from a reliable car rental company like DiscoverCars. Plus, you can rent it for your whole vacation and have a dedicated vehicle for your road trips.

As for taxis, let’s be honest, they aren’t the most reliable option and might try to overcharge you, so be cautious. Keep this as your last resort.

So, there you have it — pick your ride and let your Playa Del Carmen adventure begin !

What's in this guide?

Cancun to Playa del Carmen

In this guide, we’ll explore the 5 different ways of getting from Cancún to Playa del Carmen.

As well as this, we’ll also look at how to stay safe, when to visit and other good things to know before heading to Playa.

Quick Answer: The Best Way to get from Cancún to Playa del Carmen overall, having compared all routes and also making the trip ourselves countless times, is with the ADO bus.

With buses leaving every half an hour, you’ll never need to wait that long (which can also be pre-booked online too).

As well as being one of the cheapest methods at 225MXP ($ 11USD), the bus is also pretty comfortable with large seats and air-conditioning onboard.

Arriving to Playa del Carmen (Things to Know)

Below we’ll cover a few points when it comes to visiting Playa del Carmen. If you want more ideas on where to go see our Riviera Maya itinerary for more tips.

Safety in Playa del Carmen

Safety is one of your top priorities when heading to Mexico, and Playa is no different. Whilst certainly safer than Cancún, Playa can somewhat vary in safety.

5th avenue playa del carmen

The Quinta Avenida up until the Avenida 20 Norte is a pretty safe area, which is usually bustling with tourists. You can walk alone here both during the day and night, just be sure to keep valuables at home since pickpocketing is a risk. The beach is also pretty safe too.

Anywhere onwards from Avenida 20 Norte starts to get a little less safe (especially at night). Avoid going any further than the motorway bridge, as it can be quite unsafe here!

Getting Money Out

Playa del Carmen is full of ATMs, which dispense either Mexican Pesos or USD. In fact, due to its strong crowds of American Tourists, dollars are also accepted in many restaurants and top rated hotels here and in the region.

In the majority of cases, though, you’ll want to take out Mexican Pesos (100% needed for when traveling around the region). Some of the best banks to use include BBVA and Scotiabank. These have some of the smallest withdrawal charges, and there are many ATMs dotted around town.

When is Best to Visit Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen has both a dry and wet season, each varying the kind of experience you’ll have here.

The dry season starts in November and lasts up until April. Average daily temperatures range from 72-78°F, with highs of up to 88°F and lows of down to 65°F.

playa del carmen beach

This is the driest time to visit Playa, with between 1-2 inches falling throughout each of these months (March is the overall driest month). Heading during the dry season is best for those who want a classic beach experience with hardly any rains, and temperatures that are not too overbearing.

The wet season usually begins in May, and lasts until November. This season gets much hotter than the dry season. Average daily temperatures range from 76-81°F, with highs of up to 90°F and lows of down to 68°F.

Rainfall also gets much heavier, with between 3-6 inches falling throughout each of these months (September is the wettest month of the year).

This time of year is better for those looking for cheaper prices since it’s off-peak. It’s also great for seeing the sceneries transform with much brighter greens due to the rains.

Pre-booking Transport

Playa is probably one of the easiest destinations to pre-book transport for when heading to the Riviera Maya.

With 95%+ tourists arriving into Cancún airport, there’s many private companies that have sprung up here, offering direct trips to your accommodation in Playa del Carmen. These can easily be booked online in advance.

The ADO bus is another popular, and much more affordable way of getting from Cancún to Playa del Carmen. These leave every 30 minutes, and you can book directly through their online booking site here. This is a favorite method.

The other popular option to book in advance is Car Rental, and again there are many companies to choose from such as Alamo and Car Enterprise (usually with their pick-up points inside the airport for extra ease).

How to Get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

The following options will assume you’re landing in Cancún Airport, and looking to make your way directly to Playa del Carmen.

All of these options are also available in the city centre (it has its own ADO terminal), and will be cheaper too.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen By Colectivo

The local colectivos are a good way to make this trip, and can be found within the airport hopping between terminals. Once you’ve left the arrivals, you’ll see lots of vendors outside offering transport.

playa del carmen collectivo

It’s the cheapest way of getting to Playa, costing around 200MXP ($10USD). Due to the more informal nature of this method (there’s no actual schedules), it often takes a while waiting for these as they wait to fill up a van before leaving.

If you don’t mind a slight wait, then this option is perfect for you. Depending on who you choose, they’ll either drop you off at your accommodation or at the colectivo gathering point in Playa (drivers speak English so you just need to ask where they’re heading).

Cancun to Playa del Carmen By ADO Bus

This option is also very popular, especially since it leaves on marked times, unlike the colectivos. Costing 225MXP ($11USD), its slightly more expensive, however is a much more comfortable way of getting there.

ado bus mexico

Since you can pre-book with ADO, you can arrive without worrying about waiting a long time to leave the airport. The buses are also equipped with spacious seats and air con, which is a much needed break from the hot Mexican sun.

They depart every half an hour, and stop off at both ADO terminals in Playa (in town and also along the popular Quinta Avenida).

Cancun to Playa del Carmen By Taxi

This is by the easiest option, since there’s a never-ending stream of taxis circling the taxi ring in Cancún’s airport.

It’s preferable since you’ll be waiting very little time compared to other transport methods, and they’ll drop you directly at your accommodation. Prices start around 1000MXP ($50USD), although this can be negotiated if you can speak Spanish. Carry this handy Spanish book to help you practice along the way.

You can also contact your hotel prior and get a contact who can pick you up, as this tends to be cheaper than arranging a private transport with a company.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen By Car

Another popular method is to rent a car since you’ll have more freedom to explore (and is better for those who plan to visit more of the Riviera Maya during their stay).

playa del carmen beach

There are many desks just after arrivals inside the airport that offer car rental, right next to the ADO desk. The best car rental companies include Alamo and Enterprise, and prices can be as cheap as 300MXP ($15USD) per day.

Of course, you can pre-book this before arriving, meaning you can save time and be off without much delay. If you decide to drive, we recommend avoiding driving at night since it can be less safe (if you don’t speak Spanish, you’ll want to get a good map or directions to avoid getting lost).

Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Private Transport

For those who want the comfiest ride of all, then booking a private ride will be your best bet. This can easily be arranged via your hostel or hotel before you arrive to Cancún airport, who will also be in constant contact with the driver.

Private transfers from Cancún airport tend to start from around 1250MXP ($62USD), however, tend to be more expensive depending on who takes you.

The benefits include no hassle at the airport, and also getting to your hotel in the most efficient way too. Why not book your private transfer here?

Whether it’s your first or 15th time to Cancun, you’re probably looking for more than just a ride to Playa del Carmen. You want comfort, convenience, and value. Luckily I’ve already dug into all the options (and I’ve even tried out a few on my own).

While I recommend that you book a private shuttle , there are 6 easy-to-access ways to get to wherever you’re staying. Let’s dig into the best one for you!

From Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen: Quick Guide

Where is playa del carmen.

Playa del Carmen is a gorgeous coastal resort town in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. With less than half the population of Cancun, this quaint little city mixes a lively nightlife loved by expats with calm, beautiful beaches.

The popular tourist beach town dots the coast of the Caribbean Sea, roughly 40 miles south of Cancun. It’s conveniently situated between the popular Mexican destinations of Cancun and Tulum (1-hour drive away from each one of them), making it the perfect stopping point for the traveler exploring the area.

How long does it take to get from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen?

While Playa del Carmen is about an hour from Cancun, the Cancun International Airport is a tad bit outside the city.

If you’re jumping in a vehicle at the airport (especially if it’s a private shuttle that doesn’t have any stops but yours), you’ll have about a 45-minute drive. Though that depends on where in the city you’re being dropped off.

It’s worth noting if you’re going to be taking the ADO bus or a shared transportation shuttle, your drop-off time will be extended (unless you happen to be on the first stop!).

Best way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

After a long day of travel, the last thing you want to do is figure out how to get from the airport to your hotel.

If you’re flying into Cancun, Mexico, you have a few different options for transportation from Cancun International Airport (CUN) to your final destination in Playa del Carmen.

These are your six best options when it comes to figuring out your transportation.

Cancun airport transportation shuttle and me

1. Private Shuttle (best option)

The fastest and most convenient way to get from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen is by private shuttle with one of the most established companies in Cancun Cancun Airport Transportation.

I love them for many reasons:

✔️ The staff is extremely friendly and yet professional, both the host that receives you at the airport and the drivers.

✔️ You can arrange for a private car to pick you up at the airport and take you straight to your hotel with little waiting time.

✔️ The shuttle is for you and your party. Whether you’re traveling by yourself, in a small group, or with young children, booking a private car will not only give you more space but you’ll end up at your destination faster.

✔️ It’s relatively cheap if you consider the level of service.

2. Shared shuttle (bang for the buck)

If you’re looking for an experience that’s halfway between the affordability of a bus and the comfort of a private vehicle, the shared shuttle is for you.

For as little as $25 USD per person, you can be picked up at the Cancun Airport and dropped off right at your hotel door in Playa del Carmen.

Cancun Shared shuttle veicle

This is a more comfortable way to travel than the ADO bus. However, you’re still looking and an extended time period. While it depends on where you’re headed and how many stops are before your hotel, you’ll like be looking at 1.5+ hours.

Shared shuttles are comfortable, air-conditioned vans that take a limited amount of people. They run frequently throughout the day and night, so you will never have to wait long for one — though we recommend you book in advance to make your vacation as stress-free as possible.

3. Take the ADO bus (budget option)

Ado Bus from Playa del Carmen to airport

For budget travelers looking for the cheapest option to make their way from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen, then the ADO bus is your best bet. While this bus ride will take longer (you’re looking at 1.5 hours as a starting point), you can snag a ticket for $12.

I recommend that you book your bus ticket online before you arrive in Cancun. Of course, you can book your bus when you get there, but having your ticket purchased in advance will make the overall experience less stressful!

However, keep in mind that if your flight is delayed and you missed the bus you will need to purchase another ticket (not fun!).

4. Rent a car (most convenient option)

Not every traveler wants to be on someone else’s time. If you like to go on your own and determine your own timeline, then renting a car is for you. Not only does this mean you get a chance to travel on your own terms, but you can explore beyond your resort wherever you want.

If you are concerned about driving in Cancun , or you are not sure if you really need a car, I’ve got you covered as well. 😜

Car Rental

There are plenty of choices for renting a car at the Cancun Airport, which means you should compare prices before you commit.

In most cases, you’ll be looking at somewhere between $30 and $50 per day in rental fees. You’ll also want to make sure you tack on insurance just in case.

Renting a car is the ideal travel method for independent explorers. You can get off the resort and explore Playa del Carmen at your own pace. With a rental car, you’ll be looking at roughly an hour to get to the city. Make sure you’re aware of local traffic laws and double-check the map before you head out.

I would recommend booking with the Discover cars platform as you can compare prices and conditions and you can choose the one that suits you best and they have cheap full insurance.

Tips for renting a car in Cancun

As I explain in my post about renting a car and driving in Cancun, renting a car is the best way to enjoy Cancun and its surroundings discover amazing places, and set your schedule without having to depend on others.

However, there are a few things that you should know about renting a car in Cancun:

✔️Get full coverage insurance with zero deductible and read very well what is included in the policy

✔️When you pick up the car make sure you take a video and photos with your phone inside and out. This way if they accuse you of any damages you have proof.

✔️ Follow the road laws and never bribe the police, ever!

✔️ keep some cash (in Mexican Pesos) in case at the gas station the credit card machine doesn’t work

✔️ Be aware of the topes (bump speeds) they are not always marked

✔️ Avoid driving at night – you never know what can happen and it’s not fun to be in the middle of nowhere in the dark without assistance

✔️ If anything happens always call the car rental (they must give you an emergency number) first.

✔️ Go out, explore and have fun!

5. Ride in a luxurious limo (splurge)

Who doesn’t love to travel in style? If you want to get from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen with some real flare, consider renting yourself a limo . This mode of transportation is not only comfortable and convenient but, in Mexico, it’s relatively affordable.

While it depends on who you’re renting through and where you’re headed, booking a stretch-limo starts at $349 US for up to 6 people. I recommend that you book a car in advance, that way you’re sure you have someone lined up.

A limo ride might not be the best travel method for everyone. But if you want to travel in style, a limo won’t disappoint.

Cancun Airport Transportations have two types of limo:

Crysler 300 up to 6 people + luggage

Cancun Playa by limo

Suburban up to 10 pax + lugguage

6. Take a taxi (least recommended)

I don’t recommend taking a taxi from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen, though it does tend to be the most obvious answer. Taxis in the area don’t typically have meters, making it pretty easy to get ripped off.

If you choose to take a taxi, you’re probably looking at roughly $70 to $120, depending on where in the city you’re headed. Make sure that you discuss (and agree to) the fee beforehand with the driver. Ultimately, this trip should take you about an hour.

Is Playa del Carmen better than Cancun?

Both Playa del Carmen and Cancun are family-friendly, beach-centric destinations with great nightlife, shopping, and food. Cancun has a reputation for being popular with a younger crowd looking for vibrant nightlife.

To be fair, both destinations can offer vibrant nightlife, but Playa del Carmen is a smaller community that has a more laid-back vibe.

In fact, Playa del Carmen mixes the casual beach vibe with a lively nightlife and tends to be favored by long-term ex-pats looking to stick around in Mexico for a while.

The biggest difference between Playa del Carmen and Cancun is that in Playa del Carmen the city center, is cute and walkable and one block from the beach, while in Cancun everything is spread out and far from the beach, and, let’s be honest, there is no city center.

In Cancun, the only walkable places are the Lagoon Nichupte promenade, in front of Plaza Las Americas, called Malecon, the cycle lane that stretches along the Hotel Zone, and Plaza la Isla.

Yes, it’s typically safe to take a taxi from the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. But we don’t recommend it because it tends to be one of the more costly choices.

Cabs in Cancun and Playa del Carmen don’t have fare meters like you’d expect them to — that means it’s incredibly important to agree on a price with the driver before you get in the cab.

If you choose to go this route you should expect a bill of roughly $100+, depending on where in the city you’re headed.

Is Playa del Carmen in Cancun?

No, Playa del Carmen is not in Cancun. It is a separate city roughly 43 miles south of Cancun. If you’re traveling from Playa del Carmen to downtown Cancun , you’re looking at roughly an hour-long drive.

However, the Cancun Airport is a few minutes out of the city, which means your drive is likely closer to 45 minutes.

If you’re headed to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, chances are you’re flying into Cancun International Airport. It’s one of the busiest airports in the country and sees thousands of daily visitors — so chances are you won’t want to stick around in the crowd.

Playa del Carmen Streets

Beyond Playa del Carmen’s touristy core, there’s a world of parks, weekend markets and neighborhood restaurants to discover © Emma Shaw / Lonely Planet

Playa del Carmen  on Mexico’s Riviera Maya  might offer the ideal mix of beach-town characteristics.

At the midpoint between party-central Cancún and boho-chic Tulum , this mid-sized city has everything from wellness retreats to raving parties to gourmet restaurants. It’s a favorite among digital nomads and sun-seeking families, thanks to its walkable streets, easily accessible beaches, and proximity to Mayan ruins, coral reefs and cenotes (natural swimming holes).

It’s no secret that Playa del Carmen is a magnet for tourists, yet the beach town maintains a sense of convivial authenticity that appeals to travelers looking for a well-rounded destination. As an expat here, I have learned a thing or two about navigating this energetic beach town. Here are my first-hand tips to help you make the most of your time in Playa del Carmen.

Planning your trip to Playa del Carmen

Visit during shoulder season for fewer crowds and better prices.

As the fastest-growing town in the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen attracts hordes of travelers, especially during the peak season from December to April. Picture-perfect skies and cool nights are standard – but so are high prices. And the streets practically bulge at the seams during Christmas and spring break.

The low season runs from May to June and from September to November. Despite the soaring temperatures, we recommend visiting during the shoulder season in July and August, when crowds are thinner. While there may be some downpours and a power outage or two if a tropical storm hits, the sun always makes an appearance in between showers.

Choose the best area to stay

Playa del Carmen may seem small-scale at first, but once you venture out to the various neighborhoods you’ll find a world of verdant parks, weekend markets and authentic taquerias to discover. Centro – stretching from the ferry terminal to Calle 8 – is tourist central and the city’s bustling heart. This is where you’ll find plenty of bumping nightclubs, salsa bars and flashy souvenir stores.

Next door, Gonzalo Guerrero is a lively jumble of international restaurants, taco trucks and supermarkets sprawling to Calle 40. This area suits those who aren’t hard-core partiers but still want to be near the center of the action. Further northeast is Zazil-Ha, an up-and-coming area that appeals to medium-term visitors and creative types with its affordable short-term rentals and co-working spaces.

South of Centro lies the gated community of Playacar, which caters to couples and families with young children seeking green spaces and tranquility. Here you’ll find several family-friendly all-inclusive resorts, plenty of short-term rentals and one of the best beaches in Playa del Carmen . Note that you’ll need be ready to pedal or walk 15 minutes to town.

Check out a different beach each day

The thing that sets Playa del Carmen apart from next-door neighbors Cancún and Tulum is the town’s remarkable access to the sand . In a bid to avoid coastlines jam-packed with waterfront resorts and private beach clubs, Playa del Carmen was laid out to allow the public easy access to most of its beaches. This means that you don’t have to spend extravagant amounts on a beachfront hotel room or an overpriced day pass to enjoy the powder-puff white sand.

Make reservations for activities and day tours online

It’s wise to book boat tours and day trips well in advance, especially if you’re visiting at high season. (A month ahead will usually suffice.) An exception is the ferry to Isla Cozumel , which has regular departures daily and can be booked at the ferry terminal only one day ahead of travel. Making reservations beforehand also means you won’t have to deal with tourist touts and other pier-side hassles.

Etiquette in Playa del Carmen

Dress casually .

Leave your denim jeans or high heels at home: the fashion style in Playa del Carmen is low-key and casual. Laid-back backpackers and well-heeled travelers alike tend to sport singlets, board shorts and flip-flops by day. It’s perfectly fine to wear a linen shirt and cargo shorts to a plush dinner and even a night out at Coco Bongo.

The female dress code is just as informal, with coverups, sundresses and sandals the norm. Beachwear is a free-for-all; you won’t be judged no matter what you want to wear. Bring a light jacket for chilly nights if you’re traveling in the rainy season.

Walk everywhere, and seek out the side streets

One of Playa del Carmen’s winning traits is its walkability. With an efficient grid layout, this is a compact city that’s easy to navigate on foot. Most of the action is centered along Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), a pedestrianized boulevard lined with knickknack shops, souvenir stands, restaurants and bars. The further you get from Fifth Avenue, the less traffic and more local hideouts you’ll find.

Rent a bike to go beach-hopping

Playa del Carmen isn’t quite as keen on two-wheeled transport as Tulum – yet. But it’s getting there. The city now boasts a city-wide bike-sharing system, with lime green BiciPlaya bikes for rent from numerous kiosks dotted around town. Download the app, and you’ll be able to unlock a bike and bop around town for just M$98 ($4.80) per day.

The best bike path in the city runs along Tenth Avenue, parallel to the beach, from Playacar residential area to Avenida Constituyentes. You’ll often find pedestrians spilling onto the bicycle lane, so go slowly. Avoid riding on the main avenues as drivers tend to disregard cyclists.

Drive with caution and learn the traffic rules

If you’re planning to explore the ruins, cenotes and adventure parks surrounding Playa del Carmen, hiring a car will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace. While it’s relatively easy to drive in Riviera Maya, car rentals in Mexico come with their own set of challenges. You’ll find no shortage of attractive deals online – but they don’t usually include third-party liability insurance (required by law), airport fees and taxes. Be prepared to pay a higher price than your initial quote.

There isn’t a lot of traffic in Playa del Carmen itself, but once you venture to the 307 Federal Hwy, you’ll find a constant barrage of vehicles, particularly at peak hours. Watch out for the “TOPE” signs, as there are more speed bumps than you can count, even on the highway itself. Avoid driving at night, as it’s hard to see all the speed bumps and potholes in the dark.

Be careful of where and when you withdraw cash

Although credit cards are accepted at more and more small businesses, Playa del Carmen still runs on cash, and you’ll need small bills to enjoy its local taco joints, neighborhood bars and side-street shops.

Avoid changing money before getting to Mexico, as you won’t get the best rates. Note that not every ATM is safe to use in Playa del Carmen, as there have been cases of card cloning and counterfeit notes. Avoid the ATMs on Fifth Avenue, and always use an ATM inside a bank rather than one on the street. We recommend taking cash out at Cancún airport upon arrival for peace of mind.

Interestingly, banks and ATMs tend to have long lines at the middle and end of every month. That’s when locals get paid, and many of them are eager to withdraw their earnings. ATMs not only have a long wait at these times, but some also run out of cash.

Tipping is appreciated

With a vibrant restaurant culture, Playa del Carmen has a slew of dining options with varying etiquette and tipping expectations. Ten to 15% is the standard at most restaurants that don’t fall into the high-end or gourmet category. Tipping is not expected in casual cafes and local joints where you order at the counter, though most have a tip jar if you’re feeling generous.

Note that prices listed on menus in Mexico represent the total price; neither taxes nor tips are supposed to be added. Some restaurants offer a suggested sum for tips, which is fine; others sneak the tips into the total price, which is not. Make sure to always check your bill carefully.

Learn some Spanish to blend in

Hassling is common on the streets of Playa del Carmen, especially along tourist-clogged Fifth Avenue and Parque Fundadores . Sure, you can get by without speaking a word of Spanish as English is commonly spoken here – just be prepared to pay gringo prices. If you want to be treated fairly, learn some Spanish vocabulary that goes beyond the standard “Una cerveza, por favor!” (“A beer, please!”).

For those planning to stay more than a week in town, sign up for an intensive Spanish class at the established International House Riviera Maya . If you already have a basic level, join in the free conversation evenings run by Chichén Itzá Language School to meet new people and improve your language skills over cocktails.

Health and safety in Playa del Carmen

What to know about cartel activity in playa del carmen.

An unfortunate string of shootings has plagued Playa del Carmen in recent months, sounding alarm bells in the tourism industry. Two Canadian tourists were shot dead in Hotel Xcaret in January 2022, and the manager of Mamitas Beach Club was found murdered in the same week. The Mexican authorities have admitted an increasing presence of drug-related crime in Playa del Carmen.

Be mindful that the crimes here are usually organized and cartel-related, and violence tends to be targeted rather than random acts of terror. Playa del Carmen, for the most part, is safe for tourists and expats who steer clear of illicit activities. The only way most tourists interact with cartel members is when they buy drugs – and make no mistake: all the dealers are part of a cartel.

It is important to always keep your wits about you and stay vigilant. Keep yourself informed of the latest happenings in Playa del Carmen before you travel.

Don’t be alarmed by the presence of police and military

Don’t be surprised to find military troops and police cars whizzing through the streets of Playa del Carmen: recent incidents have caused a need for heightened security. Several police checkpoints have been set up along the 307 Hwy, including one at the Playa del Carmen exit.

Since the police will do random checks and ask for your documents, make sure you have your rental contract and valid driver’s license within easy reach. If you’ve violated a traffic rule, there’s a chance you’ll be asked to pay a fine. Tickets are never paid on the streets, so any request for cash is a request for a bribe. Ask politely to have the ticket written and offer to pay it at a police station instead. This way, you won’t be feeding corruption, and the fine will usually cost you less than the bribe.

Don’t do drugs or get drunk on the streets

With a raving bar scene, Playa del Carmen inevitably has its fair share of petty theft and robberies, which tend to happen at night. Solo travelers should avoid getting drunk alone or taking drugs on the streets. Stick with your group if you plan on late-night shenanigans. Keep an eye on your drink, and don’t accept drinks from strangers.

Be aware of common scams

Mexicans are a friendly bunch – yet it can be hard to differentiate between genuine hospitality and a sales gimmick. Follow the rule of not trusting anyone selling on the streets and you’ll do just fine. When a local approaches you saying, “Do you remember me? I’m your waiter!” just smile, nod and walk away. It’s almost certain that your “friend” is just trying to lure you into their overpriced shop.

A common scam in Playa del Carmen (one familiar to expats) is the distraction scheme. A couple usually approaches and offers to clean the bird poop from your hair or the tomato ketchup on your back, distracting you and thus swiping your valuables while your guard is down.

Know the price you should pay before getting in a taxi

Uber does not operate in Playa del Carmen, but official white-and-green cabs are readily available. They tend to charge tourists more than residents, so check with a local to suss out how much you should pay. Always agree on a price before getting in: a ride within Centro should not be more than M$50 ($2.50). Alternatively, ask your Airbnb host or hotel concierge for a reliable driver that you can contact through WhatsApp.

Don’t drink the tap water

The water in Playa del Carmen is not potable, and you should never drink water from the faucet. It is OK, however, to brush your teeth using it, and many find local tap water acceptable for rinsing vegetables, cooking pasta and washing rice. The water served at restaurants is always purified drinking water, and so is the ice, so feel free to ask for a “vaso de agua” when you dine out.

Several companies in Playa del Carmen deliver large 20-liter barrels of purified water right to your doorstep. You can also stock up at any OXXO convenience store in town; there’s one at almost every corner in the town center.

travel cancun to playa del carmen

Traveling from Cancún to Playa del Carmen is much less complicated than you think and you will find a variety of transportation options to choose from.

Here below I will explain all the available options of transportation between Playa del Carmen and Cancún, both ways.

How to get from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen

Transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen can be tricky if you don’t know how to move around, especially because at your arrival the first thing you see is a bunch of people dressed in professional-looking uniforms offering you transfers but in reality, they are selling a timeshare, so make sure you avoid those. It’s never a deal (at least for you).

Read on for your best options.

🚌 ADO bus from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

ADO busses offer the cheapest way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, and you find rides from 8 am to 10 pm at almost every hour or 40 minutes.

You can check out the ADO schedule here and book online. However, I would not recommend that just in case your flight is delayed.

How to find the ADO bus at Cancun Airport

► As soon as you clear customs just before getting out of the airport you will see different booths, mainly for car rentals, and tours.

The ADO booth will be among them and if you don’t find it you can just ask around and they will point it to you.

►You can purchase the ticket right there or on the bus directly.

► Sometimes there is no agent available, so you can just get out of the airport and get straight to the bus stop and purchase the ticket on the bus.

If you can’t find it ask the tour reps waiting for their clients just outside the airport and they will point you in the right direction.

► One-way ticket for the ADO bus ride to Playa del Carmen from Cancun Airport is 208 MXN pesos (about 10 USD)

► ADO  is the cheapest way of getting from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, or Merida .

ADO fleet has modern buses equipped with AC and TV although very often it’s too loud and with low-quality movies or soap operas, obviously in Spanish, and the a/c is freaking cold.

They are super safe and they store your luggage beneath the bus, with overhead compartments for your small bags, although I always recommend keeping your personal belongings on your lap and never out of sight.

Private transportation or taxi from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen

Cancun to Playa del Carmen private transportation is not the cheapest way to get to the destination but it’s definitely faster and more comfortable, besides being the safest one.

You have to know that transportation from Cancun airport is regulated and you need to have a special permit to be able to operate at the airport. So only authorized taxis or private companies can offer the service.

Therefore, I would recommend choosing private transportation with a trustworthy company versus a random taxi for the following reasons:

👉🏽 No matter how late is your flight, there will be somebody with your name on a board waiting for you outside the airport

👉🏽 They normally have better rates starting from 60USD and they offer different kinds of services and you don’t have to negotiate the price as you would have to do with taxis

👉🏽 They offer more personalized and professional service and an English-speaking guide

Getting a shuttle from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen

Cancun airport shuttle is a widespread way to get to Playa del Carmen with an average cost not as cheap as the ADO bus but less expensive than private transportation.

I partner with Get your Guide, which offers various options, including shared transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen.

They usually include a door-to-door service with rates starting from 300 pesos.

How to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun downtown

The best way to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun downtown is either by ADO bus or Colectivos. They are both located in the same area. See the map below.

ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen vs Colectivos

The ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is slightly more expensive than the colectivo s and a little safer, according to many, just because the colectivo drivers are not shy when it comes to speed. ADO busses are bigger and they take a little extra time to get to the destination.

They have a specific schedule which you can find here on the ADO website where you can book your trip in advance. The fare varies according to the different times of the day.

ADO Fare – from 65 to 85 MXN (approx. 3 to 4.5 USD)

Also, the ADO busses would stop only at the terminal ADO in Playa del Carmen, which is by the Quinta Avenida in the heart of Playa, whereas the collectivos can stop wherever you ask them along their route, of course.

Colectivo Fare – around 45 MXN (2USD approx.)

There are two kinds of colectivos though:

PLAYA EXPRESS: Depart right in front of the ADO Terminal entrance.

REGULAR COLECTIVO: departing from the little plaza behind the Soriana Super, (as indicated on the map here below)

Getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen by taxi

You can get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun downtown by taxi but I would recommend you negotiate the rate beforehand.

It shouldn’t be more than 1000 MXN (50 USD), sometimes cheaper.

It’s best if you know somebody (maybe at your hotel) who suggests a trustworthy taxi driver or if you have used a taxi before and you found somebody particularly nice and you might want to ask for his/her number and call them when you need them. I normally do that.

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Cancun Airport by ADO bus

From Playa del Carmen bus station (on the 5th Av.) there are scheduled busses (ADO) going to the Airport at a specific time.

Just like on the way from Cancún to Playa del Carmen, you have the two options for the colectivos (shared shuttle service):

Playa Express : They are minivans leaving from Calle 2 between 20th and 25th Avenues from their parking lot.

They leave on a regular basis during the day and will leave even if not full.

There is also a new pickup spot at the ADO bus station on 20th Avenue and 12th Street.

Their terminal is right in front of the ADO bus terminal in Cancun although they can drop you off anywhere you wish along their route.

Regular minivan – a little smaller than the Playa Express, they leave from the corner of 2nd Street and 20th Avenue.

There is a parking lot at the northeast corner of the intersection where they will be yelling out “Cancun”.

Their terminal is close to the ADO station, besides the Soriana super, as indicated in the above map.

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun downtown by ADO bus

In Playa del Carmen, there are two ADO bus stations. The one on 5th Avenue is the terminal for local buses that run around the Yucatan peninsula , and that’s where you would get your bus to Cancun.

🚰 Can I Drink Tap Water in Mexico?

No, you can’t! Maybe in some areas or in some homes where they have installed water filters but to be on the safe side, I would say, never drink tap water in Mexico. Carry a water bottle with you and fill it up where you find available potable water sources. Most of the hotels have those.

🚗 Is It Safe to Drive in Mexico?

The short answer is: depending on where you are. Although in general if you stick to the main roads and don’t drive at night you should probably be safe. In lesser tourist areas you should probably check the local news to stay up to date. Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy everywhere, even at night, although I would still avoid it. I recommend Discover Cars because the site offers the option to compare prices among different car rentals and you can add their own full coverage.

📱 Will My Phone Work in Mexico?

It will probably work, especially if you have a European or US phone, but your roaming rates may be to the stars (check with your SIM provider). Even if have an affordable international rate, you will be much better off by buying a Mexican SIM Card . It’s cheap, easy to set up, and it will keep you connected with your friends, family, and, more important, google Maps so you will never get lost!

🤕 Is It Safe to Travel to Mexico Right Now?

The short answer is, yes it is. However, there are parts of Mexico that are indeed troubled and you should avoid for now, and others that are super safe and easy to travel around.

Regardless of where you are you should always use some common sense rules such as, never flaunting expensive clothing, accessories, electronics, or money and keeping a low profile.

💉 Do I Need Any Vaccine to Travel to Mexico?

No, there is no vaccine requirement (of any kind) to travel to Mexico

🇲🇽 Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Mexico?

If you are coming from the US or Europe you don’t need a VISA to enter Mexico. Once you get in you need to fill out a form that you need to keep with you until you leave. If you don’t have it you will pay a fine. Although the tourist visa for US and European travelers used to be 6 months long which you could easily renew by leaving the country for a couple of days and going back, nowadays they have been stricter. You may be asked how you would sustain your living and other similar questions. Sometimes they even ask you to show your credit cards. It seems odd but they can do that. If you intend to stay longer than a usual couple of weeks’ vacation time, just be honest and explain your plans. If you are not from the US, check this site to see if you need a visa

How to Get From Cancun to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico 2024

  • by Nellie Huang

What’s the best way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen? As a local expat, I will share the various forms of Cancun to Playa del Carmen transportation.

Playa del Carmen , locally referred to as Playa, attracts visitors with its lively vibes and expansive palm-fringed beaches. In addition, the city’s strategic location makes it an ideal destination for exploring the best of Riviera Maya, from cenotes (natural sinkholes) to Mayan ruins and eco-adventure parks.

All the major places of interest in the Yucatan Peninsula are just a day trip away from Playa del Carmen. Playa is close to Cancun international airport, yet far enough to allow easy access to Isla Cozumel , Tulum , or Coba. That’s the reason why many expats (myself included) and remote workers have made this city a home base.

In this post, I will explain how to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. I’ve been living in Playa del Carmen since 2021 and have myself travelled from Cancun to Playa del Carmen many times using different modes of transport. So, let’s dive into the various Cancun to Playa del Carmen transportation options.

Is There Uber in Cancun?

Getting around playa del carmen, things to know before visiting playa del carmen, is it worth visiting playa del carmen.

Playa del Carmen is located on the east coast of the  Yucatan Peninsula , in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It’s a part of the Riviera Maya, which runs 75 miles (120 km) south of Cancun to Tulum. Situated along the Caribbean Sea, Playa is also a perfect gateway to  Cozumel Island . Refer to my guide on how to get from Cancun to Cozumel .

There are SO many things to do in Playa del Carmen — ranging from visiting cenotes or eco-adventure parks and doing sunrise yoga on the beach. La Quinta Avenida, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main artery in Playa. The pedestrianized streets runs from North to South and spans more than 20 blocks. Even if you are not a beach person, there are plenty of adventure eco parks in Playa that visitors of all ages enjoy visiting.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen Transportation

Playa del Carmen does have a tiny airport, but it only serves charter planes and skydiving flights. For travelers, Cancun airport is the closest airport to Playa del Carmen and it’s only an hour drive away (or 35 miles/ 55 km away).

There are 6 different ways to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. I commute regularly between Playa del Carmen and Cancun and have tried all kinds of transport modes. In this article, I’ll share the pros and cons of each of them.

cancun to playa del carmen transporation

  • I always recommend travelers to buy travel insurance, whether you’re traveling for a year or a week. These days, it is particularly important to have travel insurance that covers COVID-19. Read my travel insurance guide.
  • Safety Wing  is the most popular travel insurance company for COVID19-coverage. I use their  Nomad Insurance plan , which covers COVID-19 as any other illness as long as it was not contracted before your coverage start date.

Taking the taxi is the worst option, and I’d suggest only considering taxis as your last resort. Taxis here don’t have meters and drivers will often offer an inflated price based on how you look.

As you near the airport exit, you’ll find many locals approaching you offering taxi services. Nod and say ‘no thank you’ politely. Many taxi drivers look decent but will trick you into taking a taxi regardless. Some will say that rental companies are closed or buses are not running due to the rain etc.

Even if you opt for a taxi to get to Playa del Carmen, agree on a fare before getting into the taxi. A fair cost for a taxi from Cancun Airport to Playa ranges from 1700-2000 MXN (US$85-100) . I highly recommend booking a private transfer rather than going through the hassle of negotiating with the taxi drivers.

taxi from cancun to playa del carmen

2. Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Private Transfer

If you want to be free of the stress of getting a cab, I recommend booking a private transfer from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen. I always book with Cancun Airport Transportations , as they are reliable, responsive, and provide door-to-door service from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

Private transfer from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen   not only saves your time but is convenient and keeps you away from haggling with the drivers. It usually costs around US$70 one-way or US$125round-trip . This is ideal if you’re traveling as a family or with a group of friends as you can split the cost!

During COVID times, a private service is the safest way to go. Plus, it’s the fastest and most convenient. You’ll have a bilingual driver who speaks English (and actually drives safely!), waits for you for arrivals even if your flight is delayed, and drives you in an air-conditioned car straight to your hotel in Playa. If you’re celebrating something special, you can even book a limo to Playa del Carmen !

cancun to playa del carmen transportation

Pros –This is the fastest way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen; you won’t need to waste time waiting for other passengers and your driver; you get picked up by a bilingual driver and in a nice vehicle .

Cons – It’s more expensive than other transport options from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

3. Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Shared Shuttle

Shared shuttle services to Playa del Carmen are a good transport option for solo travelers and budget travelers, who don’t want to spend a lot yet seek a comfortable and convenient service.

You can pre-book your ride from Cancun to Playa del Carmen in a shared shuttle vehicle online for 600 MXN (US$30) per person one-way . Whenever I travel alone, I always book a seat in a shared shuttle with Cancun Shuttles . The vehicles are sanitized, comfortable, air-conditioned, and always clean. You’re also greeted by a bilingual driver.

The only drawback of opting for a shared shuttle is that you’ll have to wait for the driver to pick up and drop off all the passengers (usually max 12). That means it can take up to 1 h 45 minutes or 2 hours to get from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen.

If you are traveling with another person (or more), booking the shuttle from Cancun airport to Playa doesn’t make sense. Even if there are just two of you, you’ll only be saving US$10 and that would not be worth the extra time.  Book private transfer instead.

cancun to playa del carmen shuttle

Pros – You get picked up by a bilingual driver, usually in a comfortable, air-conditioned van. The driver is always reliable and will pick you u on time. It’s fairly cheap.

Cons – The journey takes much longer than a private transfer and you will be sharing with 10+ other people.

4. Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Car Rental

Renting a car is one of the best ways to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. It’s convenient, flexible, and relatively affordable; the average price ranges from 600-800 MXN (US$30-40) per day, including insurance and taxes.

I always use  DiscoverCars.com  to for car rentals worldwide. The search engine compares rental-prices from all the major companies and has consistently given me the cheaper rates and best services. Search for car rentals in Cancun here !

  • Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen – 35 miles (55 km); 50 minutes
  • Cancun Downtown to Playa del Carmen – 45 miles (70 km); 1 hour
  • Tulum to Playa del Carmen – 40 miles (65 km); 1 hour
  • Merida to Playa del Carmen – 180 miles (290 km); 3.5 to 4 hours

renting a car from cancun

Pros – Allows you to travel at your leisure, make as many stops on the way as you want, and even make small detours to nearby areas.

Cons – You don’t really need a car in Playa del Carmen, unless you want to explore the surrounding cenotes and Mayan archaeological sites. If your hotel does not have a parking space, you may have to find paid parking spaces in Playa that might cost 200-300 MXN/day (US$10-15).

  • Purchase a Personal Liability Insurance and a Car Insurance without fail.
  • Inspect and take good photos and videos of the car's interior and exterior. Focus on any visible dents, scratches, stain marks, rips in seat fabric, etc.
  • Keep a copy of all the rental agreements, booking information, and car papers.
  • In Mexico, it's very common for car rental companies to find a way to get more money out of you when you return the car. The first time we rented a car here, we were told a safety device was missing from the car, which we didn't even remember having it in the first place (but sadly had no proof) and had to pay a fine of $50.

Yes! Highway 307 is a 4-lane smooth road that is rather well maintained. It’s the main highway that connects all the beach towns along the Riviera Maya and beyond. We have a car and I drive along Highway 307 everyday, and never had any issue.

That said, there are quite a few police checkpoints and speed bumps along the way. The police usually check for any abnormal behavior and only stop drivers that look dodgy. We have been driving in Playa del Carmen for a year now and have only been stopped once and even then the police officer only said hi and let us get on our way.

map from cancun to playa del carmen

  • In Mexico, you drive on the right side of the road.
  • Always keep your driving license, car rental papers, and proof of insurance handy.
  • The main road hazards are reckless drivers; they tend to go very fast, changing lanes as and when they like without signaling. Be wary of these drivers and keep calm!
  • There are plenty of speed bumps along the Federal Highway, especially when you get close to Playa del Carmen. When you see the signpost “TOPE”, slow down and prepare for the bumps.
  • Avoid driving at night as you won’t be able to see the speed bumps and drivers go even faster than usual.

5. How to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen by Bus

Taking a bus is the cheapest option to get from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. All major cities in Mexico are well-connected with an extensive bus network. These buses are clean, safe, comfortable, and air-conditioned.

ADO is Mexico’s largest bus company that has regular departures from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen throughout the day. I’ve traveled in ADO buses many times and can safely say the bus company is top notch. They always leave on time and boarding is pretty well organized.

Pre-book your bus tickets here before arriving at Cancun Airport to ensure availability or visit the ADO counter at the airport to get tickets for the next bus. Bus tickets from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen cost around 225 MXN (US$11) each way.

The first ADO bus from Cancun Airport departs at 8:00 AM, and the last bus leaves at 11:40 PM. Several buses are scheduled in between, and the waiting time is not more than 1 hour. The bus drops you off at the Playa del Carmen’s ADO stop on 5th Avenue and also at Juarez Station near Walmart.

  • Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen – 225 MXN (US$12); 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Cancun Downtown (Centro) to Playa del Carmen – 100 MXN (US$5); 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Tulum to Playa del Carmen – 115 MXN (US$6); 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Merida to Playa del Carmen – 600 MXN (US$30); 4 hours

Colectivos are shared minibus/minivan-like vehicles that run on set routes in Mexico. They are a cheap transport, without any fixed schedules. For those on a shoestring budget, this would be the cheapest way to go. A colectivo ride from Cancun to Playa del Carmen costs only about 40-60 MXN (US$2-3) per person.

There’s no advance booking for colectivos. You simply get to the starting point of the colectivo, or flag down one as it passes by, ask for a seat, get through your journey, and pay the driver directly. The driver will stop many times along the way to pick up and drop off passengers.

There are 2 companies that operate colectivos from Cancun to Playa del Carmen – Playa Express and Colectivos Foraneos . These colectivos do not service Cancun Airport. To catch one, you either have to walk from your terminal to the Highway 307 roadside and flag one or take a bus from Cancun Airport to Downtown Cancun, where the colectivo stand is (right opposite the ADO bus station).

I personally wouldn’t recommend catching a colectivo. Firstly, it is not a comfortable ride, and secondly, there’s little to no luggage space. The colectivos also make many stops in between, lengthening the journey time. They are only good if you are on a day trip from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, have no luggage, and are looking for a means of cheap transport.

H ow to get from Downtown Cancun to Playa del Carmen

If you’re spending a few days in Cancun first (Remember to check out our list of things to do in Cancun ), the bus is the best option to travel from downtown Cancun to Playa del Carmen. The  ADO  bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen leaves from the bus station and runs multiple times per hour. Click for the location of the bus station on Google Maps. The bus will drop you at the ADO bus station at Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen. A ticket costs around 80 MXN (US$4).

Uber actually works in Cancun and it’s possible to hail an Uber using the app. However, Uber drivers still face a lot of issues from the local taxi companies. That said, an Uber will only get you from Cancun Airport to the Cancun hotel zone or Cancun city. They won’t usually bring you as far as Playa del Carmen.

Downtown Playa del Carmen is relatively small and almost completely walkable . Quinta Avenida, or the 5th Avenue, where all the restaurants, bars, and shops are, is a pedestrian-only street and can be easily explored on foot.

Another great way to explore Downtown Playa del Carmen is by renting a bicycle. Playa del Carmen actually has a city-wide bike-sharing system, with many BiciPlaya kiosks dotted around town. Download the app, and unlock a bike for just M$98 ($4.80) per day.

The city’s most practical cycling lane runs along 10th Avenue, a block away from the beach. It starts from the entrance of the Playacar residential area and stretches to Avenida Constituyentes.

For day trips outside of Playa del Carmen, renting a car is a good option than going through the hassle of navigating public transport. Otherwise, you can also take colectivos or hire a taxi. We have a car and have found it makes a world of difference being able to explore whenever we want with our wheels.

  • If you have booked a fancy or luxurious all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen, chances are your resort offers free/ paid transfer services from Cancun Airport. Enquire directly with your resort and ask for all the inclusions up front.
  • Since there is no Uber service in Playa del Carmen, you will have to rely on local taxis for internal transfers in the city. Always agree on the fare with your driver before getting on.

Playa del Carmen to Cancun & back: Transportation Guide

Psst! Some links in my posts may be affiliate links, which means that I get paid a fee if you chose to purchase something through it. This doesn't cost you anything, but makes a huge difference for me! Thanks for your support!

If you’re looking to travel from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, you’ll be pleased to know that there are many options available. Whether you’re looking for an airport transfer, a shared shuttle, or the ADO bus.

When I’ve traveled from Cancun to the Playa del Carmen and rest of the Riviera Maya area, I’ve relied on both the regional buses, transfers and even taxis. All are great modes of transportation, and worth considering when you are planning a trip!

Therefore, I wanted to write this post about the best ways to travel from Playa del Carmen to Cancun (or from Cancun to Playa del Carmen).

Read first: Should you visit Cancun or the Riviera Maya?

Quick Cancun Travel Guide

Where to stay : The Cancun Hotel Zone is where you will find most all-inclusive (and well-known) hotels in the city. My favourite resort is the Grand Fiesta Coral Beach , and you can check out my full review here . Other recommended hotels in the Hotel Zone are Secrets The Vine (adult-exclusive) and the Riu Palace .

Where to eat : There are several restaurants along the Hotel Zone, and most resorts have several restaurants. Don’t miss La fonda del Zancudo or La Habichuela .

Top activities and tours in Cancun :

  • Day trip to Chichen Itza ($69)
  • Day trip to Tulum and two cenotes ($39)
  • Catamaran sailing trip and visit to Isla Mujeres ($139) – read my review of this here!
  • ATV and Zipline adventure ($75)
  • Pirate show and dinner ($120)

Packing for Cancun : Cancun is hot-hot-hot, so you obviously want to pack your swimwear, flip flops and light summer dresses year-round. Most resorts have a casual dress code, but require closed shoes and somewhat nicer outfits for dinner. So pack a few nice dinner dresses as well. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen and sunglasses, and have a look at my all-inclusive packing list before you go!

Airport transfers : When you arrive at Cancun international airport it can be a little overwhelming, as there are countless transportation companies and taxies trying to get your attention (by literally shouting). I always save myself the trouble by booking a transfer in advance. This is the highest-rated transfer service on Viator.

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun (or vice versa)

No matter which of the options below you choose, you’ll find an easy way to travel between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

On my first trip to the area, we ended up taking a private transfer/taxi all the way from Playa del Carmen to the airport in Cancun. This was mainly because we had an early flight (meaning a 5am pick up), and because we wanted the most convenient option.

However, on later trips I have travelled along between Cancun and the Riviera Maya by bus – which is also a super easy option!

Regardless, you’ll be happy to hear that there are several options to choose from, depending on your budget and time constraints.

So let’s dive in!

#1 By bus (ADO)

The ADO bus is a great option for those looking for a budget-friendly way to get between Playa del Carmen and Cancun. The bus runs regularly and is a comfortable way to travel, even showing a movie onboard!

Side note : the movies are in Spanish, and I had a great time trying to figure out what was happening plot-wise (considering my Spanish is practically non-existent).

The main bus station in Cancun is located right in the city center , and it is easy to get a taxi to and from the bus stop. In Playa del Carmen the ADO bus terminal is located on 5th Avenue .

You can book your bus tickets in advance, making it extra convenient for you. The ADO website is very clear (even though it is only in Spanish), and as of recently you can pay with international credit cards.

The bus leaves Cancun up to 4 times an hour, traveling to Playa del Carmen and then onwards to Akumal , Tulum and as far south as Bacalar .

The travel time between Cancun and Playa del Carmen is 1 hour and 20 minutes .

The bus ticket costs around 240 MXN (around 15 USD).

Direct bus between Playa del Carmen and Cancun Airport

If you are heading straight to catch your flight at Cancun International Airport, you’ll be happy to hear that ADO also operates a bus from Playa del Carmen to the airport.

The bus services each of the terminals at Cancun International, and leaves Playa del Carmen two times an hour.

The ADO bus terminal in Cancun, Mexico. A red sign above a small crowd says "Welcome to Terminal Cancun". People are lining up to buy bus tickets. This is where the bus to Playa del Carmen departs from.

#2 Colectivo (shared local bus)

The Mexican Colectivo buses are a method of public transportation available in cities and regions throughout Mexico. Passengers can board the buses and travel throughout the area for a small fee – cheaper than the regional bus companies. It can be intimidating at first, but it’s actually super easy to use. The Colectivo buses are quite popular and provide an economical way of getting around town. They typically stop frequently along their routes to pick up passengers, which makes it easy to hop on and off whenever you need to. In addition, these buses offer passengers a chance to experience Mexico in a more intimate setting than other forms of public transportation.

The colectivo Playa Express travels between Playa del Carmen and Cancun, and leaves from right by the 307 highway ( Google map link ). It costs 40-45 MXN (2-3 USD) and is the cheapest way to travel between the two cities.

The colectivo stops at the ADO bus station in Cancun. There is no colectivo that goes directly to the airport, so you’d have to get an ADO bus from the city center.

#3 Cancun to Playa del Carmen by car (rental or taxi)

The most popular way to travel between the two cities is by car, as it is the most convenient and cost-effective option. The drive takes around an hour and a half, depending on traffic.

Renting a car is a great option if you’re looking for a more independent experience. You can rent a car from one of the many car rental companies in Playa del Carmen and drive yourself to Cancun – the distance is around 40 miles. Alternatively, if you are starting in Cancun, there are loads of car rental companies both at the airport and in the city center (not so many in the hotel zone ).

This is a great way to explore the area at your own pace and make stops along the way, as there are plenty of great things to see along the coast.

If you are in a hurry, and don’t mind spending a little extra, you can also get a taxi to take you down (or up) the coast. A taxi from Cancun to Playa del Carmen can cost up to $100, which may make sense if you are a traveling with friends.

#4 Airport transfer options (Shared and private)

There are several local companies that offer transfers between the Cancun airport and Playa del Carmen. These can (and should) be booked in advance, and will pick you up right outside your hotel and take you to the terminal you need.

Below is a selection of transfer options – both private and shared. Some even have wifi!

Cancun to Playa del Carmen FAQ

In conclusion, traveling between Playa del Carmen and Cancun is surprisingly easy. Whether you choose to take a shared or private airport transfer, a colectivo, an ADO bus, or another option, you can find a way to get to your destination quickly and safely.

With the tips I’ve shared here I hope you’ll make the most of your trip and have a great holiday!

Local Authorities Issue Travel Health Alert In Playa Del Carmen

Last Updated 5 days ago

Playa del Carmen is known for its mild winter weather, which is why so many Americans visit the destination between December and April, but during the summer, it can get pretty hot.

Temperatures are currently already approaching the 90s, with heat indexes close to 100 degrees.

Because various dangers exist as the temperatures rise, local authorities have issued a travel health alert in Playa del Carmen ahead of the summer season.

Crowd of Tourists on a Playa del Carmen Beach on a Hot Sunny Day

Food Health Risks Caused By The Heat

Street food and beach picnics are the stuff of summer dreams, but they can be dangerous too.

Food left out for too long can cause all sorts of problems brought on by gastrointestinal diseases and foodborne illnesses if consumed.

Being sick is the last thing you want to deal with on vacation, so officials are warning to be careful of what you eat during these hotter temperatures.

What To Watch Out For

When ordering food from a street vendor, it’s important to take stock of the setup and the environment in which the food is being prepared in.

Food vendors should have sufficient cooling and cooking conditions to prevent the growth of bacteria.

If something doesn’t look right, it may be best to avoid the street food vendor altogether.

The Riskiest Foods To Beware Of

Many fresh foods can become dangerous when there’s excessive heat and the food is not stored properly.

Even fresh fruits and vegetables can grow bacteria if they stay unrefrigerated for too long after they’ve been cut.

The biggest dangers, though, come from meat, poultry, and seafood products, which can cause serious illness if left out at room temperature or above for even a short time.

Increased Dehydration Risk

Another danger to watch out for, which might seem obvious but affects unsuspecting visitors in warmer destinations every summer, is dehydration.

Being in the sun all day in higher temperatures, especially when exerting yourself, can cause you to be dehydrated quickly if you don’t drink enough fluids.

You’ll want to stock up on plenty of bottled water when visiting Playa del Carmen because drinking local water is not advised.

Protecting Yourself From The Sun

Everybody knows that too much sun is not good for you, but in the Mexican Caribbean, the sun is hotter, so it doesn’t take being in it long to get a sunburn.

It can take as little as 30 minutes, and most beachgoers spend a lot longer than that in the sun.

Sunscreen, hats, protective clothing, and alternating between sun and shade, if possible, are highly advised when spending the day on the beaches in Playa del Carmen .

Where To Go In Playa Del Carmen In Case Of An Emergency

In the unfortunate case that you do find yourself in an emergency situation, there is help nearby.

There are several urgent care-type establishments in the area to treat symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, dehydration, and sunburns.

These places, located throughout Playa del Carmen, are open 24 hours a day.

Playa Del Carmen’s Hottest Months

If you’re worried about visiting Playa del Carmen when it’s too hot, you’ll be happy to know that the temperatures during the wintertime are nearly perfect.

The average highs hover around 80 degrees, with cooler nights and mornings.

If this is the kind of weather you’d enjoy, then December, January, and February are ideal times to visit.

There’s nothing like a beach vacation in the middle of the summer, though; you just have to take a few more safety precautions when visiting Playa del Carmen when the temperatures are higher.

Several chuuro carts at the intersections along 10th Avenue (try the corner of 10th & Calle 34), but they don't come out until after 6pm. Also along Av. Benito Juarez.

Mexico: Authorities find 8 bodies in Cancun resort as drug cartel violence rages

Resorts like cancun, playa del carmen, tulum remain top destinations for americans vacationing in mexico.

California woman kidnapped in Mexico seen in video footage released by FBI

The FBI has released video footage of missing California woman Monica DeLeon Barba "moments before" she was kidnaped in Tepatitlán, Jalisco, Mexico.

The bodies of eight people were found dumped in the Mexican resort of Cancun, one of the country’s most popular tourism destinations, authorities said Tuesday.

The bodies were discovered over the weekend about 10 miles from Cancun's beach and hotel zone after police launched a coordinated effort to search for missing people in wooded lots and even sinkhole ponds, also known as cenotes, Mexican authorities said.

Oscar Montes de Oca, the head prosecutor of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said five of the bodies were found at an abandoned construction site. Three were subsequently identified as previously reported missing people.

Three sets of skeletal remains were discovered at a separate site in a wooded area on the outskirts of Cancun near a poor neighborhood, close to the resort's airport, authorities said. They have not yet been identified.

Montes de Oca said authorities estimated the bodies were dumped there between one week and two months ago.

According to the government, more than 112,000 people are listed as missing throughout the country. While crimes are more common in other areas of the country, Cancun and other resorts were typically regarded as safe travel destinations.

Drug cartels have begun disposing of the bodies of their victims in clandestine body dumping grounds, especially as several cartels fight for control of the Caribbean coast and its drug trade.

Volunteers, including the relatives of missing people, assisted investigators in the searches. Search dogs were also used.
