Day Trip to Morocco from Gibraltar

Many travelers visiting Spain, wonder about organizing a day trip to Morocco from Gibraltar .

The passage from Gibraltar to Morocco often occurs in conversations; Sometimes by friends who were planning a trip to travel through southern Spain with the possibility of a stop in Morocco and others by travelers who come to Malaga.

For those who live in southern Andalusia, and especially for the Gaditans, crossing the Strait to the neighboring continent is something usual. It is a different and attractive destination that is difficult to forget, given its proximity.

There are people who go from time to time to spend a few days in Morocco and there are people who take their car for a longer route. Not to mention those who have friends or family in Ceuta or Melilla.

However, for those traveling around the world, this experience of taking a boat and arriving right away in Africa is something very exotic and, to some extent, adventurous. Deleting a new continent from our list of trips is something very satisfying.

Nonetheless, we recommend extending your trip to include other cities like Chefchaouen, Rabat, Casablanca , Meknes, or Fez . You may like to check 3 day Tour North of Morocco , or 4 days Tour from Tangier .

Ferry from Spain to Morocco

It is difficult to describe the sensations of the trip that come to Tangier, the distance of barely 15 kilometers does not seem to correspond with reality. This paradox is the main attraction of crossing to Morocco. I’ll tell you right away how to do it.

In this article, we will show you how to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to reach Morocco. In addition, you will find all the details concerning the experiences of traveling to Morocco from Spain.

Ferry from Spain to Morocco

Traveling-to-Morocco-from-Spain-2

The most common way to travel to Morocco is to go by ferry to Tangier.

There are two regular routes:

  • Algeciras – Port Tanger Med ⎝ (an hour and a half by boat). This port is located in the city of Ksar Sghir, 50 kilometers from Tangier by road and 30 from Ceuta. You can go by bus or taxi to Tangier. Buses are more economical but their timetable varies and they are not too modern. For convenience, you can share a taxi to get there.
  • Tarifa – Port Tanger Ville (one hour by boat). Better located in the city of Tangier.

To remember :

  • The two main companies that cross Gibraltar are Inter Shipping and FRS . You can consult the timetables and book in advance on their respective websites. Note that sea conditions can modify the timetables and the duration of the journey.
  • When planning your trip, remember that in Morocco is an hour less than in Spain

How to get to Morocco from Spain?-1

The best way to cross Gibraltar is to travel via Tarifa to the city of Tangier. This is because it is the shorter route and because it arrives directly in Tangier.

However, in Spain, before taking the ferry, it is not easy to get to Tarifa if you don’t have your own vehicle. There isn’t a train line and the buses aren’t very frequent from Cadiz or Algeciras.

If you’re coming from Seville, it’s not that complicated, since there are several buses a day with a company called, Transportes Generales Comes .

On the other hand, if you come from Malaga, there is only one direct bus per day and another which is not direct, you can make the reservation with Avanzabus . The alternative is to use BlaBlaCar or Amovens . It is more economical and hopefully there will be places available to get to Tarifa easily by car.

In any case, if you are traveling from another city by public transport, my recommendation would be to spend at least one night in Tarifa, no matter if it is going to or from Morocco. It is a small town, with beautiful alleys, good people, good food and spectacular beaches known around the world for lovers of surfing and kite-surfing. This is not the case for Algeciras, a larger and, in my opinion, a less attractive city.

Day trip alternatives to Morocco from Gibraltar

Day-Trip-to-Morocco-from-Gibraltar

There are other day trip to Morocco from Gibraltar, they can be organized by Boat or by plan.

By boat, there isn’t only the Algeciras or Tarifa ferry mentioned above, there are other alternatives. However, they aren’t direct and they may be interesting for long-distance travelers.

For more information on the following ferries you can consult Direct Ferries :

  • Ferry Malaga – Melilla and enter Morocco for the border post of Beni Ensar. There is also a ferry to Melilla which leaves from Almería and Motril.
  • Algeciras – Ceuta and enter Morocco across the Tarajal border.
  • Motril – Nador .
  • Motril – Al Hoceïma .
  • Almería – Nador .

Flying is the easiest (and boring) way of getting to different Moroccan cities from Spain. You can find here the cheapest flights to tangier .

Finally, another quick and fun option to cross the Strait to Ceuta would be to take a helicopter . There are regular flights every day from Algeciras (10 minutes) or Malaga (25 minutes).

Gibraltar to Morocco Day Trip

Morocco ranks among the world’s most popular tourist destinations due to its rich cultural diversity, historical landmarks, and breathtaking natural wonders. If you’re in or near Gibraltar, Spain, and don’t head over to Tangier, Morocco, you’re missing out on an incredible experience.

Introduction to Morocco: A Country of Diversity

From wandering the Medina to exploring the Cave of Hercules, Tangier has lots to offer. This is one of the most popular trips from Spain to Africa. One of the best parts is that even after hours of exploring, you can still return before the day ends from your Gibraltar to Morocco Day Trip .

So, If you plan to set out on a day trip from Gibraltar to Tangiers, this guide covers everything you need to know that will help you have a smooth and memorable once-in-a-lifetime experience. Read on!

How to Get to Tangiers on the Ferry

Gibraltar has its own culture and sights. While it’s fairly close to Tangiers, ferries from here aren’t that frequent, departing a few times a week only.

That’s why it’s usually better to plan your trip from Algeciras or Tarifa in Spain instead. This route is preferred because of its shorter travel time and direct arrival in Tangier. So, you’ll find it more convenient, and it’ll be easier to plan your Morocco day trip from Spain if you start here.

Tarifa to Tangier Ferry

Taking the ferry from the port of Tarifa is perhaps the best way to reach your destination. The two most popular ferry operators for Tarifa to Tangier include FRS and Inter Shipping.

If the weather is all good, you’ll arrive at the Tanger Ville Port in Tangier city within the next hour and a half of your departure.

Check the schedule and book tickets in advance to secure your preferred time slot. This is great because you don’t have to book at the last minute in person.

Return tickets cost around $125 USD on average, with up to a dozen ferries spaced throughout the day, depending on the operator. So, you can plan to start your trip at any point in the day conveniently.

Algeciras to Tanger-Med

The route from Algeciras to Tanger-Med is another viable way to cross the Strait of Gibraltar. There are two ways to get to Tangier from Algeciras.

Ferry from Algeciras to Tanger-Med Port

First, you can choose the ferry journey from Algeciras to Tanger-Med port, followed by a bus transfer to Tangier, as no ferry directly reaches Tangier. The ferry departs every four hours with an hour-and-a-half journey duration.

On average, it costs around $60-$160 USD, depending on the season you choose to travel and which boat and time you choose.

The ferries from Algeciras take about an hour and a half to make the crossing.

Once you’ve reached the Tanger-Med port, which is about 31 miles from the main city, you can find buses outside. It’s easy to catch one because there’s at least one bus leaving for Tangier City about every 10 minutes.

The fares are highly economical, starting from $1, with the ride close to an hour to get into the city.

Bus and Ferry to Tanger Ville

Alternatively, you can catch a bus from Algeciras to Tarifa, which has a journey time of about 45 minutes and costs only $2-3. From there on, you can board the ferry directly to Tanger Ville. The ferry from here also leaves every four hours with a journey time of about an hour, costing anywhere from $39-230, depending on the time of the year.

While you make your way from Algeciras to Morocco, be careful not to take the ferry to Ceuta.

Ceuta is a Spanish territory and not part of the main Moroccan area.

Travelers who arrive in Ceuta from Algeciras will face difficulties crossing the border into Morocco. There aren’t any direct routes or transportation methods to take you from this point to Tangier either. So it’s best to avoid this route altogether.

Day Trips To Tangiers From Tarifa

Sometimes it's just easier to do a day trip and let someone else do all the work. Honestly I do way more day trips than everyone things. I love them, especially if I'm short on time.

Check out these day trips to Tangiers from Tarifa.

Day tours to Tangier are also available from Malaga , Algecira s , and even Sevill e .

Tanger Sightseeing: What to See in Tangiers

As soon as you arrive in Tangiers, you’ll see the rich culture the city offers. Because of how close the city is to Europe, it’s always had a bit of African and European history to it. But there’s a lot more to it than first meets the eye.

Visit the Medina

The Medina of Tangier is an ancient walled city with many small markets dating back hundreds of years.

This location is important in history because it’s been a meeting point for Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and Europeans.

You’ll see lots of different types of architectural styles here. From traditional Moroccan work to Andalusian influences, it's got it all. There are intricate doorways, ornate tiles, and vibrant colors that all come together to show you how this city has been for generations.

As you stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll discover there’s a lot to do here.

A typical shop inside Tanger Mdina

Go to the Kasbah Museum

Head over to the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures inside the Sultan's palace of Dar El Makhzen. Inside, you’ve got artifacts showcasing Islamic Art and History, the gilded and illuminated Qur'an, and more.

You can check out artifacts from prehistoric eras to the 19th century as you walk through time.

Head outside, and there is the scenic and tranquil Andalusian Garden, which brings the whole place together beautifully.

The Kasbah Museum Tanger

Check Out Grand Socco

Place du 9 Avril 1947, or Grand Socco, is a historic square. It stands as a boundary between the old Medina and newer developments in downtown Tangier. There are shops and restaurants, and some natural beauty and mosques.

This is one of the major tourist areas though, so you might want to be a little careful while shopping. Chances are you can find the same things in the older parts of the city compared to the main streets. But if you’re good at haggling, you might get a great deal here too.

Our tip is to look for carpets here. There’s no better place to get traditional Moroccan carpets than here and take them back to Spain.

The Grand Soto area Tanger

Go to St. Andrew's Church

Completed in 1894, this church showcases striking Moorish architectural elements. Its decoration in the high Fassi style brings in a local Moroccan style to it.

If you’re religious, The Lord's prayer in Arabic above the altar is one of the main attractions you shouldn’t miss here.

There’s also a historic graveyard, with some of the most famous people throughout history buried here.

Explore the Moshe Nahon Synagogue

While Islamic history is heavily featured throughout the city, it doesn’t mean that other religions aren’t celebrated here.

The Moshe Nahon Synagogue is iconic and it celebrates the Jewish heritage of the city.

It’s the only one open to the public, even though there are four others on the same street. So this is the perfect place to come to if you want to learn about the Jewish history in Tangier.

Walk the Corniche

The Corniche is a coastal walkway where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city's coastline.

The entire walkway is also only 0.3 miles, so it’s easy for people of all ages to take a stroll here.

Even if you don’t have a lot of time on your day trip to Tangiers , it’s great to visit this area for a little bit to take in the mesmerizing views before finishing the tour.

The Best Ferries to Morocco From Spain

travel gibraltar to morocco

TripSavvy / Grace Kim

Getting to Morocco from Spain is quite easy, with lots of ferries to Morocco from a variety of ports. But journey times vary drastically (as do prices) and travelers always have to bear in mind where in Morocco they're going to end up.

It is most likely that your first destination in Morocco, if not Tangier , would be Fes , so we've included travel options for getting to Fes on your first day in Morocco. Marrakech would be quite far to travel on your first day. An alternative first destination in Morocco is Chefchaouen .

If you don't want the hassle of planning a journey to Africa by yourself, there are plenty of guided tours of Morocco from Spain that you could take.

Cities in Spain With Ferries to Morocco

  • Tarifa :  The southern-most tip of Spain and the European capital of windsurfing. Has regular daily ferries to Tangier.
  • Algeciras:  A port city which has regular daily ferries to Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
  • Gibraltar :  A British enclave in Spain which has ferries to Tangier on Friday afternoons.
  • Barcelona :  Not so regular and quite a long trip, but you can get a ferry to Tangier.
  • Almeria :  In the south-eastern corner of Spain (as opposed to the other ports here, which are all in the south-west) with ferries to Al Hoceima, Nador and the Spanish enclave of Melilla.
  • Málaga :  The biggest city on the  Costa del Sol offers one ferry a week to Tangier.

Tarifa, Gibraltar, or Algeciras to Tangier

Tarifa to Tangier is the best ferry route to Morocco in the congested Strait of Gibraltar. There are five ports on the Spanish side (Tarifa, Algeciras, Gibraltar, Malaga, Almeria) and four on the Moroccan side (Tangier, Tangier Med, Ceuta and Melilla), with eight routes connecting them. A list of routes can be found here .

Tarifa to Tangier is the best of these as it has the most voyages per day, some of the cheapest tickets and you arrive in Tangier city itself. Tarifa is also a nicer place to visit than the other ports on the Spanish side.

Getting from Tangier to Fes takes four and half hours by train. Consider staying the night in Tarifa and getting an early ferry. Find more information on the Moroccan Trains Official Website and the Moroccan Buses Official Website.

Malaga or Almeria to Melilla

Convenient if you're already in Malaga (or making the trip from Granada), especially if you can get the overnight Trasmediterránea ferry, as this arrives in the morning and allows for timely onward travel to Fes or other cities in Morocco. Unfortunately, the day ferry leaves you to arrive inconveniently late in Melilla.

Melilla is not Morocco, but a Spanish enclave, so transport is tricky. You have to take a taxi to Nador, the nearest Moroccan city. From there, there are a couple of trains per day but your options are limited as some depart very early and others arrive very late. The bus situation is even worse.

Almeria to Nador or Melilla

If you're traveling from the east coast of Spain to get to Morocco, Almeria is your most convenient port. There are three ferry companies offering a variety of routes (on different days) from Almeria to Nador, though getting to Almeria in time for the ferry may require a night's stay in the city. Balearia is one possible ferry company, and their vessels are equipped with accessible seats and restrooms as well as safety anchorages for wheelchairs and other mobility aids. If you or someone in your party has limited mobility or disability make a note of this when booking your reservation and at check in. An employee will inform you of all available services onboard and be able to provide assistance if needed.

You can also travel from Almeria to Melilla, but this leaves you not in Morocco but in a Spanish enclave. Better to arrive in Nador.

Barcelona to Tangier

If traveling from Barcelona to Morocco, you are better off flying or visiting the south of Spain before crossing to Morocco. But it is possible to take a GNV ferry all the way from Barcelona to Morocco, though the timetable is infrequent and irregular.

How to Travel from Morocco to Gibraltar via Spain: Step by Step

On my last trip to Morocco, I had a return flight back to London from neighbouring Gibraltar. Making my way up north and crossing the Mediterranean, despite long, was easy and cheap. Most travellers leave Morocco to Spain and Gibraltar via the city of Tanger. But as I gave it a miss, and here I share with you, step by step, how to travel from Morocco to Gibraltar via Spain, using bus and ferries.

HOW TO TRAVEL FROM MOROCCO TO GIBRALTAR VIA SPAIN

The duration of this journey will depend on how lucky you are with your bus, cab and ferry connections. If you’re not stopping in Ceuta, I recommend you set aside a full day from morning to evening. If you intend to explore this Spanish exclave in North Africa, then two days should be enough: roughly one on the move, and a day to get to know the place.

how to travel from Morocco to Gibraltar via Spain

Leaving Morocco To Spain

From Tetouan , the journey starts with a 45-minute bus journey to the town of Fnideq, that costs 7 dirhams, (£0.55, €0.65, USD0.85). Fnideq is right on the border with Ceuta. It is an understated coastal town with a busy market near the bus station and nice quiet beaches. At the bus station you must take a cab to the border. It will cost you between 10 and 30 dirhams (£0.75-£2.25, €1-€3, USD1.20-3.60) depending on your haggling skills, and it’s only a 5-minute drive.

On the Moroccan side of the border you will see four windows on your left, some for locals, others for foreigners. On the day I crossed there were only two officers serving all nationalities. There will be some locals offering you a departure card, so just bear in mind this is how they make their livelihood, and they expect a tip for the “help”.

TIP: The departure card is the same as the landing card, so get an extra one when you land, to save you time and hassle.

Hand in your departure card with your passport and you should have it back in a couple of minutes. After that, walk along the queue of cars and get to the Spanish border control. There is a security check which was unused when I crossed, but it may have been a one-off.

FACT: This route is very popular with drug carriers trying to take hashish to Spain, so you may be invited for a random check.

As usual, hand in your passport to the Spanish officer and you should have it back in no time – that is, if you’re an EU citizen or don’t need a visa.

NOTE: If you are not an EU citizen and or do not come from a country that benefits from visa-free travel to the EU, you must have a valid visa, issued by the Spanish consulate in your country.

Arriving In Ceuta & Taking The Ferry to Spain Mainland

Now just walk along the path and take the bus to the city centre. If you’re not spending time in Ceuta you must get off at Plaza de Africa and from there you may walk 10 minutes to the port or take a cab.

how to go from Morocco to Gibraltar via Spain

On your way to the port you will see a number of outlets and other tax free shops. There’s a petrol station just by the entrance to the maritime station where you can buy newspapers and magazines. There are no left luggage facilities, free wi-fi or newsstands at the maritime station. There are two bars/cafés where you can have a bite to eat, a small souvenir shop and information desk – which closes at 2pm on Sundays.

If you haven’t bought your ferry ticket, there are a number of companies doing the crossing, which takes around one hour and costs €32 one way (£27.50, USD43). At the time I travelled the ferry company Acciona had a special of €9.60 (£8.60, USD13.50). If you’re under 26 years old you will get a reduction. You may want to buy your ticket in advance , though.

WARNING: Do watch your belongings very closely at all times on the ferry, as thieves operate on this route – I had my small rucksack robbed, whilst buying some coffee, for example.

In Spain And Gibraltar

If your journey ends in Algeciras , enjoy the rest of your trip. If you’re continuing to Gibraltar, you may walk 10 minutes to the bus station or take a taxi. You must take the bus to La Linea – the Spanish town that borders Gibraltar – which normally leaves from platform 13. It’s a 45-minute trip and from La Linea’s bus station you may again walk to the border or take a taxi.

Crossing this border in your own vehicle or a taxi may turn out to be an unnecessarily lengthy process, as relations between Spain and Gibraltar have always been shaky. You will have to show your passport and may have your car checked. Crossing on foot is your best bet. Buses run from just outside Gibraltar’s border control to the main street, which is curiously called Main Street. 🙂

Gibraltar International Airport is right by the border, and you may just walk.

Spain and Morocco are considering building a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar in time for the 2030 World Cup Finals, Moroccan news site SNRT reports .

It said the plans are being drawn up by Morocco’s National Company for the Studies of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED) and its Spanish counterpart, the Society for Studies of a Fixed Communication across the Strait of Gibraltar, or Secegsa.

The tunnel would carry a high-speed railway, cutting the journey time between Casablanca and Madrid to five-and-a-half hours.
