How To Find The Right Travel Nursing Company

When looking for the best travel nursing company to suit your needs, you first have to know what your needs are.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering travel nursing companies:

  • Are you going to need health insurance?
  • How important is it that you contribute to your retirement?
  • Do you prefer to find your own housing or do you want your company to find it for you?
  • Where do you want to travel?
  • How do you plan on getting there?
  • Do you plan on working per diem as well?
  • What kind of healthcare facilities are you hoping to work in?

What to Look for in Travel Nursing Agencies

When looking into travel nurse agencies you should first make sure that they provide the basics: free housing or a housing stipend, health and dental insurance, a retirement plan, travel reimbursement, 24-hour customer support, and a variety and abundance of travel nursing jobs all over the country.

Here are a few tips from my experience about the basics:

Travel Nurse Housing:

Do you want your agency to find housing for you, or do you want to take the housing stipend and search for housing yourself?

I personally found it much easier to have my agency set up my housing for me. This way I knew it was safe, furnished, close to where I was working, and paid for. If there were any problems, all I had to do was call my company and it would be handled.

Many people choose to find their own housing and take the housing stipend instead. There are pros and cons to this choice:

Pros To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • Your housing stipend depends on the city you live in, but oftentimes, it is more than the rent you end up paying. This is a good way to make some extra tax-free cash.
  • You can find exactly the type of housing you’re looking for at the price you’re willing to pay. You can rent just a room for yourself and pocket a lot of cash. Or rent an entire house if you’re bringing your family or pets along. If you’re traveling with fellow coworkers, you can find a bigger house to share that fits everyone.
  • You can choose where you live. Maybe you’re going to Seattle and you’d rather live downtown and commute to work than vs. living next to the hospital in the suburbs.
  • There are several websites and groups now to help you find housing
  • Once you’ve done it once, you understand how to find housing and can repeat the process in the next location.

Cons To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • It can be difficult to find short-term furnished housing.
  • Many landlords require a deposit, so you have to front that money before you get your first paycheck.
  • If you end up extending your contract, it’s not guaranteed that your landlord hasn’t rented out the place to someone else.
  • If you have never been to that city before, it can also be tough to determine whether a neighborhood is safe or not.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are traveling with a pet, it may make it difficult to find your own housing. Oftentimes, travel nurse agencies have housing already contracted that accepts pets.

There are pros and cons to using your a travel nurse agency’s contracted housing vs. finding your own housing. It just depends on how much time and effort you can put into the search and if you’re hoping to pocket any extra housing stipend cash.

Benefits for Travel Nurses:

  • The majority of travel nurse companies offer health and dental insurance.
  • Now that the Affordable Care Act is in place, it might be wise to research whether or not it would be more cost-effective for you to go with your agency’s healthcare plan or purchase one of your own through healthcare.org. The benefit of going through healthcare.org is that if you do plan on switching travel nurse agencies, you won’t have to change your insurance.
  • Some smaller travel nurse companies will give you a healthcare stipend if you don’t take their health insurance so you can purchase your own.
  • As far as retirement plans go, I decided to open up my own Roth IRA and not contribute to the 401K because I didn’t know how long I was going to be traveling.  With some companies you can contribute to your 401K from day 1 and with others you have to wait as long as 1 year.

Travel Nurse Reimbursements

When talking with your potential travel nurse agency, make sure you ask them what the reimbursement is for travel. “Travel” cost is considered the amount of money it takes you to get from your “tax home” to your travel assignment or from one assignment to the next. Often times this can be negotiated if there is a high need in one state that happens to be across the country.

I have found that the average reimbursement is $500.

They will pay you half on your first paycheck and the other half when you complete your assignment. You have the option of either driving or flying to your next destination. I personally drove to each of my assignments; I couldn’t imagine trying to fit all my belongings into suitcases and I love road trips.

Important Pay and Benefits Questions to Ask

Not all benefits or pay packages are created equal. It is important to find an agency that offers benefits, housing, and pay packages that are specific to your needs.

1. What destinations does your agency serve?

The whole point of travel nursing is to travel…right? So it is important to find a company that serves the city or cities you want to travel to. Some agencies claim they have contracts nationwide, however, that may not be the case.

If you know of a specific hospital that you would like to travel to because it looks good on your resume or a specific city you want to explore, then make sure your potential agency has a contract at that location. This is especially important if you want to travel to places such as Hawaii and Alaska.

Match with a travel company here.

2. How are your pay packages broken down?

Does the company tend to pay a higher base rate with lower non-taxable reimbursements or a lower base rate with higher non-taxable reimbursements?

Having a higher base rate may serve you better if you plan on taking company housing, plan on buying a house, or getting a loan in the near future. If you are someone who likes to find their own housing, then a higher housing stipend may be the way to go with a lower base rate.

3. What types of housing do you provide?

Most agencies offer a one-bedroom furnished apartment for your typical 13-week contract. This typically does not include dishes, linen, a washer and dryer, a T.V., or even a vacuum. If you don’t like lugging your belongings around with you all over the country or paying out of pocket to rent this stuff, then it may be wise to either ask if the agency provides any of these necessities at no cost or find your own housing.

If your contract is only eight weeks, then you could get stuck in an extended-stay hotel. I personally like to have nice housing, so I wanted a company that focused on providing comfortable and safe housing options. If you like to find your own housing then this may not apply to you.

4. What type of benefits do you offer?

Most agencies offer medical/dental benefits and a retirement package. If these benefits are important to you, then finding a company with good benefits is essential.

If you like to live on the edge with no health benefits and you brush and floss your teeth like a champ, then maybe you don’t care about benefits. If this is the case then you can ask the company if they are willing to pay you a higher base rate for not taking their benefits.

As far as retirement packages go, I found it easier to do my own Roth IRA on the side. This way, if I switched companies I didn’t have to worry about moving my money all over the place.

5. What types of extra work-related costs do you reimburse for?

Travel nurse companies can reimburse you for the following:

  • Licensing fees
  • CEU (Continuing Education) requirements
  • Certifications
  • Required immunizations

Some travel nurse agencies have a CEU database that is free for their employees. This helps cut costs in those states that require a certain number to maintain or acquire a new license.

These extra costs add up over time so it’s nice to know your agency is looking out for your pocketbook.

6. What are your missed and canceled shift policies?

A missed shift means you called in sick, and a canceled shift means they canceled you for low census. For the most part, the hospital determines how the travel nurse agency handles this, and it will be written in your contract.

This is important because in the travel nurse world if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. And in some cases, you may have to reimburse your agency for housing costs.

There may be a clause written in your contract that allows you to “miss” a certain amount of shifts without being penalized. There will also be a clause that states how many shifts the hospital can cancel you. Usually, it’s once a pay period, and your agency shouldn’t require you to reimburse them for housing costs.

There are even some agencies that offer 100% guaranteed shifts meaning no matter what you will not get canceled.

Other Questions To Ask a Travel Nurse Agency:

  • What is the travel reimbursement?
  • How much will health insurance cost me?
  • If I don’t take health insurance, do I get a healthcare stipend?
  • When can I start contributing to my 401K?
  • Are there bonuses for extending assignments?
  • How often do I get paid?
  • Does the company also contract per diem work?
  • Do they offer paid time off?
  • Are there any referral bonuses available?

The travel nursing agencies we recommend for your next short-term post

Traveling nurses often find working in different parts of the country, or even the world, exhilarating and fulfilling. Healthcare facilities in the U.S. rely on travel nurses to meet the demand for nurses, which is expected to soar by 275,000 between 2020 and 2030.

"Being able to explore other healthcare systems and connect with other providers can help give a travel nurse new experiences and perspectives," says Rachel Norton , BSN, RN, a clinician support manager at Vivian Health , a national travel nurse hiring marketplace.  We reviewed more than 20 agencies and studied hundreds of reviews to create this list of the best travel nursing agencies. Compare the Best Travel Nursing Agencies

Guide to choosing the best travel nursing agencies.

Travel nursing agencies are  staffing agencies  that place registered nurses and healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics with short-term staffing needs. They often send individuals to national or international locations where there are nursing shortages.

Here are a few tips for choosing the best travel nursing agency to meet your needs.

Is a Travel Nursing Agency Right for You?

There are many advantages to working with a travel nursing agency in addition to the obvious benefit of being able to travel and explore new places. Some of the other advantages of working with a travel nursing agency include:

  • Competitive pay: Travel nursing agencies offer competitive pay rates that are often higher than what you would make as a staff nurse and recruiters can help you find lucrative positions.
  • Benefits : Health insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits are typically included in a travel nursing agency's compensation package.
  • Housing: Travel nursing agencies often provide housing or help nurses find housing in their assignment location.
  • Specialty assignments based on nursing field: Agencies can help place you in an assignment that matches your specialty, interests, and skills . Some facilities accept travelers into new specialties or a float pool that covers multiple units, as long as they have prior travel nursing experience. This is an added bonus for those who wish to explore new areas of nursing.
  • Flexibility: Agencies offer a variety of assignment lengths and locations, so you can choose an assignment that fits your lifestyle.
  • Perks and discounts : Free or reduced-cost continuing education courses, travel expenses, gym memberships, completion bonuses, and other perks are often available through travel nursing agencies.

How to Choose a Travel Nurse Agency

Consider the following when choosing a travel nursing agency:

  • Average pay rates: Pay rate varies by agency, location, and assignment. Travel nurses often work with multiple agencies at the same time to find the best assignments and pay rates.
  • Benefits package: Make sure the agency's benefits are comprehensive and meet your needs. Benefits may include health coverage , dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, 401K, vacation time, and education reimbursement.
  • Housing options: Determine if the agency provides housing or assists with finding housing. Some nurses prefer to find their own housing, while others prefer the convenience of having the agency secure housing for them.
  • Reputation: Check out online reviews and ratings to get an idea of the agency's reputation. Talking to other travel nurses who have worked with the agency is also a good way to get first-hand information.

Staffing agencies report that demand is high for critical care and medical-surgical nurses. Emergency room staff and labor and delivery staff are also in great demand.

Do Travel Nursing Agencies Pay for Housing?

Your agency will either have housing available for you or will reimburse you for your housing expenses. If you choose to secure your own housing, most agencies will give you a stipend to help offset the cost of rent and utilities. Talk with your agency recruiter about your housing options and what will work best for you.

How Long Are Travel Nursing Assignments?

Some travel nursing opportunities can be as short as eight weeks, while others can last for up to six months at a time. There are often options and offers to extend assignments, too.

What Experience Do You Need to Be Recruited by a Travel Nursing Agency?

Most agencies require new travelers to have recent experience as a nurse—meaning you can't become a travel nurse right out of nursing school. A year or two of experience is commonly required. A qualified nurse may also need more experience to work in the intensive care unit (ICU) or another specialty area.

Can Travel Nurses Choose Where They Work?

Yes, and that's generally a benefit of the job. Some agencies work to assign candidates throughout the United States, while others place travel nurses internationally. Before deciding to work with an agency, it makes sense to find out where they place travel nurses if you have a specific placement location in mind.

Methodology

We reviewed more than 20 agencies and studied hundreds of reviews from travel nurses around the country to identify the best travel nursing agencies. We then analyzed company quality and customer service scores across multiple sources to determine which companies are most reputable. Wages, housing options, and benefits were also a top priority. We reviewed the range of assignments, as well as the quantity and quality of each agency's listings in all 50 states.

How Travel Nurse Pay Works: A Comprehensive Guide

Understanding travel nurse pay: your comprehensive guide.

Travel nursing is an exciting career option for registered nurses, offering the opportunity to explore new locations while helping patients in different healthcare facilities. As a travel nurse, understanding your pay is important to help you make informed decisions about your career and financial future. In this guide, we explore how travel nurse pay works, the factors that influence your earnings, and how to negotiate your contract to get the best pay package possible.

{{cta-light-with-image}}

How Does Travel Nurse Pay Work?

Travel nurse pay can be a complicated topic for many healthcare professionals. Unlike staff nurse positions, travel nursing contracts often come with multiple variables that can impact your take-home pay. This can include the bill rates at healthcare facilities, additional benefits like housing stipends, and vendor management fees that certain travel nursing companies apply to your pay. In this article, we will explore these various factors and dive deeper into how your pay works as a travel nurse.

Taxable Base Rates: What You Need to Know

First and foremost, it's essential to understand that your taxable base rate is the core component of your travel nursing pay package. As a travel nurse, this is the hourly wage that is taxed, similar to how a staff nurse is paid. This ensures you remain compliant with tax laws while working in your nursing position. Importantly, taxable base rates can vary between different travel nursing agencies, so it is essential to be aware of the rate you are receiving when comparing offers.

Tiered Bill Rates: How They Affect Your Earnings

Healthcare facilities typically pay travel nursing companies a bill rate for their services, which in turn covers your pay, benefits, and agency overhead costs. Some facilities use a tiered bill rate system, meaning the rates they pay to travel nursing companies can fluctuate based on specific factors. For example, a hospital may offer a higher bill rate for a nursing position in a hard-to-fill specialty or for an urgent need, which can sometimes result in increased pay for the travel nurse.

Being aware of tiered bill rates can be helpful when comparing travel nursing contracts and understanding the basis of your earnings. By exploring opportunities with higher bill rates, you could potentially maximize your earnings during your assignment.

Gross Profit Margin: Understanding Your Agency's Profit

Travel nursing companies make their profit by skimming some of the bill rates paid by healthcare facilities after covering the costs of your pay, benefits, and company overhead. This profit is referred to as the gross profit margin, and it's an important aspect to understand when examining the difference in pay between multiple agencies.

A transparent travel nursing agency should be able to provide a sample breakdown of how much from the bill rate is allocated towards your pay, benefits, payroll costs (e.g., taxes and Social Security), liability insurance, and company overhead. This understanding can empower you to ensure you're getting a fair deal and to potentially negotiate better pay and benefits if there's room for it within the bill rate.

Breaking Down the Travel Nursing Pay Package

Now that we have a grasp of taxable base rates, bill rates, and gross profit margin, let's dive into the other aspects of the travel nursing pay package, including travel stipends, housing reimbursements, and vendor management fees. These factors can have a profound effect on your final take-home pay, so it's essential to understand and compare them carefully when considering travel nursing contracts.

Travel Nursing Salary: Factors That Influence Your Earnings

Travel nursing agencies typically offer a benefits package on top of your taxable base rate, which can include housing stipends, travel reimbursements, and other tax-free reimbursements. It's important to understand how these factors work in addition to your base pay to get a full picture of your overall earnings on an assignment.

For instance, housing stipends might be offered based on the cost of living in your assignment area, while your travel stipend could cover any expenses related to commuting to and from your tax home. Some agencies may also offer shift differentials, overtime, certification reimbursement, or other bonuses that can influence your pay. Keep these factors in mind as you explore travel nursing contracts and compare offers.

Vendor Management Fees: What They Are and How They Affect Your Pay

Vendor management fees are another crucial aspect of the travel nursing pay package. Some healthcare facilities employ a Vendor Management System (VMS) to streamline the process of onboarding and managing temporary staff, including travel nurses. These VMS companies typically charge a small percentage of the bill rate as their fee, which is ultimately passed on to the travel nursing agency in the form of a reduced bill rate.

When a vendor management fee is taken into account, it can potentially influence the bottom line of your pay package. Agencies might have less flexibility in offering higher pay or better benefits given the reduced bill rates. Understanding this aspect of the system can help you set realistic expectations for pay when working with healthcare facilities that use a VMS.

Agencies Gross Profit: How It Affects Your Paycheck

Lastly, it's crucial to reiterate the connection between your travel nursing pay and the agency's gross profit. As mentioned earlier, travel nursing companies make their money by allocating a portion of the bill rate after covering your pay and benefits. Some agencies may have larger overhead costs or simply choose to retain more profit, resulting in lower pay and benefits for you. In contrast, other agencies that operate on a slimmer margin might be able to offer you better pay or additional benefits.

To ensure you get the best possible pay package and a fair deal from your agency, it's essential to ask questions and ensure transparency in their breakdown of the bill rate. Comparing your pay and benefits across multiple agencies can help you find the best fit for your needs and potentially increase your overall travel nurse earnings.

Understanding Your Total Pay Package as a Travel Nurse

When considering a travel nursing contract, it's essential to understand the various components that make up your total pay package. Unlike staff nurse positions, the travel nursing pay structure often comprises several components, including hourly wages, stipends, bonuses, and even liability insurance reimbursements. Travel nursing companies work with healthcare facilities to determine the bill rate for each nursing position - a figure that encompasses a travel nurse's wages, benefits, and vendor management fee paid to the agency.

To fully comprehend your travel nursing pay package, it's crucial to break down each element, such as the base pay, travel stipend, and housing stipend. Doing so will help you make informed decisions when comparing offers from different travel nursing agencies. Furthermore, understanding your pay package will help you negotiate more effectively with travel nursing companies, ensuring that you receive a fair deal for your services.

Travel Nursing Pay: Other Forms of Compensation to Consider

Beyond base pay, travel nursing agencies offer additional compensation to make their positions attractive and competitive. Recognizing these other forms of compensation is essential when comparing travel nursing pay packages:

1. Travel Stipend: Many travel nursing contracts include a travel stipend to cover the cost of transportation to and from your assignment. This amount varies depending on the distance of the assignment and the travel nursing agencies you choose.

2. Housing Stipend: A crucial aspect of a travel nursing pay package is the housing stipend. This stipend is intended to cover the cost of temporary housing during your assignment. It's essential to verify whether this housing stipend is sufficient to cover the entire cost of accommodation in your destination city.

3. Bonuses and Incentives: Travel nursing companies may also offer bonuses and incentives, such as completion bonuses or extension bonuses, to travel nurses who fulfill their contract obligations or extend their contracts beyond the initial term. These bonuses can enhance the travel nursing pay package and should be taken into consideration when evaluating offers.

4. Liability Insurance: Some travel nursing agencies provide liability insurance coverage for their nurses. This coverage is essential for travel nurses, as liability claims can be financially devastating. Ensure to inquire whether the travel nursing company includes this insurance in their pay package or if you need to secure it independently.

Travel Nurse Housing: Options and Costs

For many travel nurses, housing is one of the most critical considerations when accepting a traveling nursing position. Typically, travel nursing agencies offer two primary housing options - agency-provided housing or a housing stipend. Travel nurses can elect to use the stipend to arrange their accommodation, or they can choose to stay in housing organized and funded by the travel nursing company.

When evaluating housing options, travel nurses should account for factors such as location, convenience, safety, and cost-efficiency. If you decide to arrange your housing, research average rental rates in the assignment's city to ensure the housing stipend is sufficient to cover accommodation costs. Keep in mind that agency-provided housing is often move-in ready and may include furniture, utilities, and other conveniences that make transitions easier.

How to Negotiate Your Travel Nursing Contract

When negotiating your travel nursing pay package, it's essential to approach the process with a thorough understanding of the various components and industry norms. The following steps can help you negotiate effectively with travel nursing companies:

1. Research and compare: Gather information on travel nursing pay packages from multiple travel nursing agencies and identify the industry's standard rates for your specialty and experience. This knowledge will empower you when negotiating your desired pay package.

2. Determine your priorities: Before entering negotiations, identify which components of the pay package are most important to you, such as the housing stipend or travel reimbursement. This clarity will allow you to focus on those areas during the negotiation process.

3. Be assertive and confident: Don't be afraid to express your desires and concerns regarding the contract. Remember that travel nursing agencies' primary goal is to ensure your satisfaction so that you remain with the company. Your assertiveness may secure you a better pay package or assignment conditions.

4. Consult a mentor or colleague: If you have connections in the travel nursing industry, seek their advice on negotiating contracts and navigating conversations with recruiters. Gaining insight from experienced travel nurses can be invaluable during the negotiation process.

Sample Breakdown of a Travel Nursing Pay Package

Here's an example of a travel nursing pay package, with amounts allocated for various pay components:

  • Base Pay (Hourly Wages): $25 per hour
  • Overtime Pay: $37.50 per hour (1.5 times the base pay)
  • Housing Stipend: $2000 per month
  • Travel Stipend: $500 upon completion of the contract
  • Completion Bonus: $1000 upon contract completion
  • Extension Bonus: $500 for extending the contract past the initial date
  • Liability Insurance: Included in the pay package

By understanding the various components and industry norms, a travel nurse can successfully evaluate and negotiate their travel nursing contract. Comparing offers, researching housing options, and effectively communicating your needs to travel nursing companies will ensure that you secure favorable travel nursing pay and assignment conditions.

There are many factors to consider when talking about how much travel nurses get paid, including:

Aya Healthcare - Nurse

When looking to optimize pay, it’s important to understand that pay packages differ based on specialty and location. For instance, a travel L&D nurse in California will make a different amount than a travel med-surg nurse in Kentucky.

Many travel nurses bounce around between states — sometimes even between specialties — and will be paid differently from assignment to assignment. You may also be eligible for housing, meal and incidental stipends to reimburse you for actual expenses incurred while on assignment. Your recruiter will discuss all these details with you during your search. Your recruiter will work diligently to find you positions that meet your financial goals. Keep in mind that flexibility during your job search with location, shift and other factors usually results in the potential of higher paying opportunities.

How to Break Down Travel Nurse Pay Packages

Travel nursing has become an increasingly popular career choice in recent years. Not only does it offer the opportunity to explore new places and gain diverse clinical experiences, but it can also be financially rewarding. One of the key factors that make travel nursing appealing is the pay package. In this blog, we’ll delve into the details of travel nursing pay packages, helping both aspiring and experienced travel nurses understand how compensation works in this dynamic field.

What are Travel Nurse Pay Packages?

A travel nurse pay package is a comprehensive compensation package offered to registered nurses who take on temporary assignments at healthcare facilities in different locations. It typically includes an hourly wage, housing allowance or provided housing, reimbursement for travel expenses, daily stipends for meals and incidentals, potential bonuses, health benefits, retirement options, and reimbursement for licensing and certification costs. The specific components and amounts can vary based on factors like specialty, location, experience, and the staffing agency involved. Travel nurse pay packages are designed to attract and retain qualified nurses who are willing to work on short-term assignments in various healthcare settings.

Understanding the Basics

Travel nursing pay packages are structured differently from traditional nursing positions. They typically consist of several components:

Hourly Wage : The core of your pay package is your hourly wage, which varies depending on your specialization, location, and facility. Travel nurses often earn higher hourly rates than their permanent counterparts.

Housing Stipend : Most travel nursing contracts include a tax-free housing stipend. This stipend helps cover the cost of housing in the area where you’re assigned to work. You can choose to find your own housing or opt for provided accommodations.

two smiling women paperwork

Meal Allowance/Per Diem : To cover daily expenses like food and incidentals, travel nurses receive a per diem allowance. This is also tax-free and can vary based on location and facility.

Travel Reimbursement : Travel nurses are reimbursed for their travel expenses to and from their assignment location. This can include airfare, mileage, or even a flat-rate travel stipend.

Bonuses : Many travel nursing agencies offer various bonuses, such as sign-on bonuses, completion bonuses, and referral bonuses, as incentives to join or stay with them.

Healthcare Benefits : Some agencies provide healthcare benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance. These benefits can vary widely, so it’s essential to review them carefully.

Retirement Plans : Some agencies offer retirement plans or 401(k) options, which can be beneficial for long-term financial planning.

Calculating Your Earnings

To determine your total compensation, you’ll need to consider all the components mentioned above. It’s crucial to read your contract carefully and understand how each element contributes to your overall pay package. Keep in mind that tax implications may vary depending on your choices regarding housing, per diem, and other components, so consulting a tax professional is advisable.

Factors Affecting Pay

Several factors can influence the pay package for travel nurses:

Location : The cost of living varies greatly across the United States, and your pay package will reflect this. High-demand locations with a higher cost of living generally offer higher compensation.

Specialization : Certain specialties, such as critical care or operating room nursing, are in higher demand and often command higher pay rates.

Experience : Travel nurses with more experience generally receive higher pay.

Negotiation Skills : Negotiating your contract is a crucial part of securing a favorable pay package. Don’t be afraid to discuss your expectations with your agency recruiter.

Travel nursing can be an exciting and financially rewarding career option. Understanding the components of your pay package and the factors that influence it is essential for making informed decisions about your assignments. Be sure to research potential agencies, ask questions during the interview process, and carefully review your contract to ensure you’re getting the compensation you deserve. With the right approach, travel nursing can offer both professional growth and a fulfilling financial future.

Understanding Your Travel Nurse Health Insurance Options

  • July 3, 2021
  • Myah Christenson

travel nurse care package

Travel nurses often struggle to choose the right health insurance for their situation. Since travel nurses spend a lot of time on the road, finding the right insurance option is key. Luckily, many travel nursing agencies offer health insurance plans as part of their benefits package. However, with so many options to consider, it’s important to know everything about insurance.

Travel Nurse Health Insurance Options

When it comes to choosing health insurance, there are a couple of options to choose from. In fact, a comprehensive health insurance package that adds extras like pet benefits, retirement account options, employee assistance programs, and mental health management benefits is a sign that you’re working with a good travel nursing agency.

Agency-Provided Health Insurance

Most agencies will offer their travel nurses health insurance. However, not always do the nurses get to choose their coverage. Of course, there are many benefits of choosing the health insurance coverage your agency provides. Being easy and already taken care of is one of those benefits.

When you choose the insurance benefit your agency provides, you won’t experience any gaps in coverage. You count on the flexibility of being able to work with different agencies without worrying about deductibles.

Of course, if you change agencies often, this might not be the best option as you’ll have to adjust your insurance every time. Or, you’ll have to try to maintain your insurance through COBRA, which can often be expensive and sometimes unaffordable.

Individual or Family Health Insurance

Most travel nurses have either an individual or family health insurance plan that they manage personally. These are the plans you can access during the open enrollment period, which often lasts from November 1st to December 15th. You cannot enroll in an individual health insurance plan outside of this timeframe, which can be problematic to some. The only way you could apply is if you have a qualifying life event, such as:

  • Having a baby
  • Moving outside your plan’s coverage area
  • Changing jobs

However, you‘ll only have a 60-day special enrollment period to navigate the health insurance market and pick the right one for you.

Short-term Health Insurance

Another popular option among travel nurses is short-term health insurance plans. These can be much cheaper than individual plans but don’t come with the same comprehensive benefits.

These plans are great for those in-between jobs, looking to switch agencies, or having difficulties affording insurance otherwise. However, unlike individual plans, these can deny your coverage based on pre-existing conditions. They may also not pay for certain health care services, including those related to pre-existing conditions.

What About Supplemental Insurance?

Most insurance packages offered through a travel nursing agency will include vision and dental insurance. However, these often don’t cover routine dental and vision care for those who choose short-term or individual insurance plans.

Luckily, vision and dental insurance is much cheaper than comprehensive insurance and covers vision checks, glasses, and dental cleanings. It’s a matter of personal preference to choose or not these supplemental insurances. If you’re someone who wears glasses, for example, vision insurance might be a good idea.

How to Maintain Coverage Between Travel Nurse Jobs

Many nurses take time between contracts to visit family, go on more extended vacations, or take time off between assignments. This flexibility is one of the perks of being a travel nurse. However, this flexibility can frequently mean you lose your health insurance coverage when it comes to insurance.

Of course, when you choose a travel agency, they’re likely to handle all the details about your insurance policy and explain what your options are. But, if you choose an individual insurance plan, then you have to look at your options.

Using COBRA

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act ( COBRA ) allows eligible employees and their dependents to continue the benefits of existing health insurance coverage if they lose their job. In some cases, you’ll be able to purchase the same health coverage plan at your employee’s group rate.

Under COBRA, you can continue this type of coverage for up to 18 months or over if you qualify.

However, these plans can often be unaffordable. This is why many travel nurses opt for short-term insurance plans when they’re in between assignments.

What Happens If I Don’t Have Health Insurance

While the tax penalty for not having health insurance has been repealed at the federal level, you can still be fined at a state level for not having ACA-compliant health insurance.

As of today, you can be fined in the following states:

  • Rhode Island
  • Washington D.C.

Most of these states impose a tax penalty on individuals who go without health insurance but could afford it.

Asked Questions

01. To be considered as a healthcare traveler, be sure your licenses and certifications up to date. The required licenses may vary depending on the state in which you work a travel assignment. While not always required, you’ll have a leg up if you have some (even minimal) on-the-job experience.

02. Determine which healthcare staffing agency you want to work with, then apply for a job! At LRS Healthcare, our recruiters take pride in listening to your requests and finding you the best LTC RN travel job that not only pays well but is in a city that matches your interests.

03. To put it simply, pay packages vary by job, facility as well as per agency. A healthcare traveler pay package could be advertised online before or after taxes, include travel or housing stipends, etc., These variables affect what your take home pay could be and could potentially be different than what agencies display online. To ensure accuracy, your LRS Healthcare recruiter will outline your personalized pay package with you, so you know what to expect on your weekly paystub.

04. A standard medical traveler assignment is 13 weeks; however, long term care facilities are more willing to take some shorter contracts. It is not uncommon for an RN to commit to an 8-week travel assignment, then extend to continue exploring the city, or to perfect their new skills.

The Essential Packing Guide for Travel Nurses

Woman_putting_suitcase_in_car

By Claire Brocato, contributor

You've landed a great travel nursing assignment and you're eager to head off to your new destination. Now that the prerequisite interviews and paperwork are behind you, the only thing that stands between you and your new adventure is the task of packing up the things you'll need for the next 13 weeks.

Although it sounds simple enough, knowing what to pack, what to leave behind and what to source in your new hometown can make a big difference to the ease and efficiency of your trip and how quickly you settle into your new home.

article_apply_cta_image

The Housing Essentials for Your Travel Nursing Assignment

Before you start packing, talk to your recruiter to determine what amenities your new housing complex provides. If you accept the free, company-provided housing, your accommodation will likely include basic furniture such as:

  • Dining table and chairs
  • End tables and lamps

This list can vary from one location to another, however, so be sure to find out ahead of time. In most instances, travel nurses are responsible for supplying their own linens, towels, cooking utensils, cutlery and dishes.

"I always explain to my travel nurses what is included in their housing package and what isn't," said Heather Frederick, a senior recruiter at American Mobile Healthcare. "One thing that can differ from one housing complex to another is the availability of a microwave."

Another option is to choose the housing stipend instead of the company-arranged housing, which means your amenities and furnishings will depend on what you can find.

Once you know what is included in your housing package, make a detailed list of the items that you'll need while you're on assignment and check off each item that you pack, noting which things you can buy once you move. This will help ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

Research Your Destination's Climate

One of the key rules with packing is to know what kind of weather to expect at your destination. If you’re going to be traveling through two or more seasons, the rule of thumb is to bring layers of clothes--T-shirts, sweaters, jackets, coats--that can be added or peeled off as the temperature changes.

To find out ahead of time what kind of weather to expect, visit sites like  The Weather Channel  or  AccuWeather where you can research seasonal averages and rainfall for your new locale.

To help you determine the most important items to take with you, see the " What to Pack " list, which includes the items that travel nurses most frequently take with them on their assignments.

Travel Light, Travel Right

Travel experts agree that there are two kinds of travelers in the world: those who pack light and those who wish they had. While it may be tempting to pack up everything you own, traveling with a large load only makes moving from one place to another more difficult and time-consuming.

"In order to pack light, travel nurses need to prioritize what is most important to them and to determine what they can't live without for 13 weeks," Frederick explained.  "For example, if a traveler isn't someone who cooks a lot, then it's not necessary for them to bring all their cooking utensils. Just the bare minimum will be sufficient.  Also, if the nurse is traveling solo, he or she doesn't need to bring place settings for more than one or two people. Just bring the essentials."

"If there is something you forgot or if you want to supplement your household items, you can always find a Target, Wal-Mart or Ikea in your new town to pick up the things you need, and you can donate the items at the end of your assignment for a tax write-off," she added.

American Mobile travel nurse Rebeca Segrest, RN, keeps things simple by packing plain white dishes from her college days. "If one of them breaks, it's easy to replace and they still look like a set," she said.

Instead of packing large, bulky items such as a TV set or DVD player, some travel nurses have discovered that it's easier to rent these items once they arrive at their destination or to buy them from a local pawn store and then sell everything back when they leave. This not only saves money but also keeps packing to a minimum.

Feeling at Home on Your Travel Nursing Assignment

No matter where your travels take you, it’s important to feel comfortable in your “home away from home” and to feel connected to the people or places that you have left behind.

Segrest feels close to her family and friends by plugging her computer into her television set and using the TV as a large digital frame to display photographs of her loved ones. “I feel like they are there with me when I see their pictures throughout the day,” she said.

Other items that are easy to transport from one place to another, yet add a feeling of comfort and familiarity, are candles scented with your favorite fragrances, colorful throws and pillow shams, framed photographs of loved ones that can be used as wall art, refrigerator magnets of places you’ve visited, and baskets in different sizes that can be used for display and storage.

Although Segrest likes to travel light, she does afford herself one luxury that makes her feel right at home. “I always make sure to pack my espresso machine,” she laughed. “It’s an essential “feel at home” item for me.”

Here are a few of the essentials you’ll want to pack for your travel nursing jobs:

How to Get Mail and Packages as a Travel Nurse

In such a digital age, who even thinks about mail anymore? We’ll give you one good answer — travel nurses. Working travel assignments far from home for anywhere from a few weeks to a few months long throughout the year means your official home address isn’t always where you actually spend the most of your time.

Bills, birthday and holiday cards, and other important documents still get delivered via mail, even if less often than years past. As for packages, those seem to be constantly on the rise thanks to the convenience of Amazon and online shopping!

So, how can you make sure you get your mail and packages as a travel nurse while away for work?

You have two main options: mail forwarding and delivery boxes. Under these umbrella options, however, are a variety of options for you to choose what’s best for you.

Mail Forwarding

Mail forwarding is pretty much what it sounds like. If you’re going to be working a travel nursing contract far from home for longer than a month, forwarding your mail is going to be one of your best options to get your mail instead of coming back to a pile of it when you get home.

Let’s look at your three choices.

Forwarding with the USPS

You don’t need to worry about changing your permanent address! The United States Postal Services offers temporary mail forwarding services from any period of time between 15 days for up to one full year.

The basic Change of Address (COA) option is completely free, and all mail will be delivered to your temporary address and what the USPS refers to as a “piece-by-piece” forwarding of mainly first-class mail and periodicals, each item forwarded one at a time as they arrive.

Set up mail forwarding to where you’ll be staying for work as soon as you know the address. This is especially important as the USPS tells patrons,

“Although mail forwarding may begin within 3 business days of your submitted request, it’s best to allow up to 2 weeks.”

To receive what the USPS categorizes as marketing mail or package services, you’ll have to pay some fees for their Premium Forwarding Service (PFS) options. Mail delivered undered PFS will arrive once a week to your temporary home away from home.

For short assignments less than 15 days or for assignments that just pass 15 days, you might also consider having the post office simply hold your mail for the time being until you return home from your travel assignment.

Virtual Mailboxes

Don’t want to collect physical mail while at your temporary address? Travel nurses can also try one of many new mail forwarding services that make use of secure digital technology to scan your mail and deliver it in a virtual mailbox for your eyes only.

PostScan Mail is an example of a company leading the way with virtual mailboxes. The process works by the PostScan receiving your mail as your temporary forwarded mailing address, scanning the front of your items, then giving you the option to have your items opened and scanned, recycled, or physically forwarded to your current address.

For busy travel nurses, the last thing you want to deal with is piles of junk mail to either shred, recycle, or hold onto until you return home. Virtual mailboxes are an easy way to reduce the clutter. Just be sure to thoroughly investigate the security of the virtual mail forwarding services you look into before making a decision!

Family or Friends

If you’re on close terms with any family members or friends near your permanent residence, you can always go the old fashioned way and have someone you trust check your mail for you periodically while you’re away for work. This is probably the most convenient method if someone you trust already lives at your permanent address.

Having a family member or friend check your mail, inform you of what’s important, throw away what’s not, and sending you anything you immediately need saves a few dollars while decreasing any mail delivery anxieties you may have.

PO Boxes, Mailboxes, and Lockers

Maybe you really do want all your mail delivered to you while you’re working that three month-long travel nursing contract — or maybe you want to be able to receive packages from friends, family, or online shopping. The good news is that rentable PO boxes, mail boxes, and lockers provide both extra room and some added security to where your deliveries arrive.

PO boxes aren’t just for companies. Individuals can also rent them! As the name suggests, the USPS provides PO boxes available to rent throughout the country.

Benefits of PO boxes include the variety of box sizes (whether you want to receive just mail or also packages), the security of all mail items being delivered to secure post office location and kept behind a box with a lock and key, and the privacy of not having your mail and packages delivered to your temporary home and left unattended while you’re away on a long 10 or 12-hour shift.

For added convenience, some PO box locations are open 24/7, and some others even offer free premium services that include mobile alerts.

Do remember that you’ll still need to have your mail forwarded to the PO box address.

UPS Mailboxes and Lockers

Similar to PO boxes, The UPS Store offers personal mailboxes available to rent at many locations. So, why might you choose a UPS personal mailbox instead?

First and foremost, your mailbox comes with a real street address and not just a PO box number. Some mail and packages might not be able to be delivered to a PO box depending on the sender’s policies and restrictions. So, if you want to make sure you can receive all mail and packages, a UPS personal mailbox is one to consider.

Many other features of UPS mailboxes and PO boxes are quite similar in terms of security, accessibility, box sizes, and notification methods, so it’s up to you to decide which is more convenient for your travel assignment length and location.

The UPS Store also offers locker services in nine states and 20 total locations. If you’re lucky enough to be near one, these lockers can be an easier alternative than renting a large mailbox or PO box for package deliveries. This is because the lockers are available on an as-needed basis. Just make sure to register your package’s delivery location as the locker address!

Amazon Hub Lockers

If you aren’t near a USPS locker location, Amazon offers a similar option that may be even more accessible. Amazon Hub Lockers are secure and self-service lockers available to use as a delivery location for your Amazon packages. There are Amazon Lockers available in over 900 cities and growing, so they’re a perfect package delivery solution for travel nurses! Another benefit is that Amazon Lockers are also completely free to use. Just be sure to set the nearest locker to location to where you’re staying when setting the delivery location at check-out.

Need a cheat sheet for PO box sizes, UPS mailbox sizes, and Amazon Hub Locker size limits to help you make your decision? Here you go!

Unusual Circumstances

For travel nurses staying in less common places while on a travel nursing assignment such as a campground or an AirBnB with an address where mail can’t be delivered, many of the mail and package delivery options we’ve covered can still work well.

PO boxes, UPS mailboxes, and Amazon Lockers are likely to be your best solutions for receiving mail and packages in these circumstances. Their nationwide accessibility is growing by the day, so adventurous travel nurses who love camping, live out of RVs or tiny homes, or who love staying in trendy AirBnBs can feel confident knowing they won’t go without access to their important mail or receiving packages while working away from home for a while.

No matter where you work as a travel nurse, we hope that you’re always able to feel at home! To find your next great travel assignment, Loyal Source has you covered with nationwide assignments for nurses and healthcare professionals of all specialties.

National Nurses Week 2024: A RN reflects on the state of the profession, calls for change

When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.

6 Travel Essentials For an On-the-Go Nursing Mom

By Abby Sjoberg

When I was expecting my first child, I told myself that I wasn’t going to let kids stop me from traveling . Four years later, I find it laughable. It’s not easy traveling with kids, but it’s also very cool to be able to explore new places & cultures through the eyes of my son.

Cooper was born in January 2020. We didn’t travel very much (for obvious reasons). So this past year when my son Charley was born, I was determined for things to be different. I quickly realized that nursing while traveling was a whole different ball game. After several failed attempts to whittle down the list of travel items, I finally settled on a few (okay, six) essentials that made nursing while traveling through Europe, the Caribbean, or even to let-lagged Japan doable—I promise with a little planning it can be done.

A Portable Breast Pump

Keep an eye out for one that has a rechargeable battery so you’re not stuck to an outlet (especially in a foreign country where you’ll need an adapter). You'll want one that fits into your bra seamlessly, like the Willow Go Wearable Breast Pump , or the Spectra 9 Portable & Rechargeable Double Electric Breast Pump , which is super lightweight.

Freeze Dried Breast Milk

Leche takes your own breast milk and turns it into the powdered form, which lasts up to three years. It's totally genius for anybody who wants flexibility and doesn't want to carry frozen or expressed milk along with them. There's even an option that portions your breast milk into individually sealed sachets for on-the-go.

A Double Duty Travel Bag

Traveling with kids comes with a lot of stuff. And if you're nursing? A ridiculous amount of stuff. Invest in a baby bag you want to use—that you will like to use—because you'll be carrying it everywhere with you. I love the Prada Re-Nylon baby bag (fashion and function, check) because you can actually throw it in the wash, and the Lululemon New Parent Tote Bag is also fantastic.

Breast Pump Cleaning Wipes

Trust me: The last thing you want is to have to stop at a public restroom to clean every nook and cranny of your breast pump when you're traveling. I found these All-Purpose Cleaning Wipes to do a great job of cleaning the residue and build-up quickly and safely–just make sure your pump is dry before you wipe clean.

A Reusable Storage Container

There are ready-made containers specifically designed to store your breast milk or in a pinch— a travel mug will do the trick (just make sure it has a good seal—I like Ceres Chill and the Willow Portable Breast Milk Cooler ). According to the CDC, breastmilk should be stored in a refrigerator after 4 hours so be mindful of this if you are planning to be out sightseeing for a while.

Wet/Dry Bags For…Everything

If you can’t already tell, multipurpose items are the way to go here—like wet/dry bags. I like to keep a variety of sized ones from Mushie and Calpak to store your pump parts, hide dirty kids clothes, or serve to keep things organized like chargers and passports.
