How Much Can a Half-Ton Truck Tow?

How much trailer can a half-ton truck — F-150, Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, RAM 1500, Tundra, and Titan — tow ?

As an example, tow ratings for the bestselling Ford F-150 can range from 5,000 to 14,000 pounds. This depends upon cab configuration, truck bed size, 2WD or 4WD, engine size, and the final drive ratios (ring-and-pinion gear set ratios).

In addition, some high ratings require additional payload or towing packages. All these aspects combine to establish a pickup truck’s maximum tow rating — also referred to as the maximum trailer weight rating.

The bestselling Ford F-150 cab configuration (according to 2022 model sales) is the SuperCrew. We’ll use that as a starting point. The 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew short bed 2WD with a 3.3L V-6 engine and 3.55-ratio axle gears is rated at 5,100 pounds.

On the other end of the scale is the 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew short bed 2WD with a 3.5L turbocharged V-6 engine, 3.55 axle gears, and optional payload package scores a 14,000-pound tow rating.

Detailed tow ratings are listed in your truck’s owner’s manual. Tow ratings for some older trucks can be found on RV.com . The Ford Motor Company website also offers a Towing Guide to help find your truck’s maximum trailer weight rating.

Travel Trailer Terminology You Should Know

There are a few terms that trailer manufacturers use in their specification charts that you should know and understand.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum permissible weight for a trailer, including all cargo, fluids, LPG, and optional equipment.

Unladen, Dry, Tare, or Base Weight: These all mean the same thing — the total weight of the unloaded trailer in standard equipment trim, with no cargo, fluids (freshwater), or LPG.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC): Sometimes referred to as Rated Cargo Load, this is the maximum amount of cargo weight the trailer can safely hold. This includes everything you load into the trailer, full water tanks, filled propane tanks, and batteries.

Tongue or Hitch Weight: The weight the trailer will place upon the hitch of your truck. More than 500 pounds of tongue weight on a half-ton pickup will likely place undue stress on the rear suspension and unload the front end, adversely affecting the truck’s steering and overall handling. In this case, the use of a weight-distributing hitch can redeploy some of the weight from the hitch back to the trailer’s axle(s).

Overall or Exterior Length: Commonly refers to the length of the trailer from the hitch ball-coupler to the back of the rear bumper.

Updated April 5, 2024

Every time we post an article or a video about the best travel trailers for half ton trucks, a huge debate ensues. The debate isn’t about the trailers we choose but whether or not half-ton trucks can tow these trailers safely.

We selected all the travel trailers on our list based on modern pickup trucks’ tow capacities with model years from 2020. We can all agree that older pickup trucks can’t handle the same weight that newer pickups can. So, if you own a pickup truck older than 2020, this list is not for you.

5. Amenities

4. how do you know your vehicle’s payload capacity, what does half-ton towable mean.

Modern “half-ton” trucks have completely outgrown the term’s original meaning. Back in the 1940s, a “half-ton” truck could carry 1,000 lbs. The term stuck, and it’s still with us today, regardless of the truck’s actual payload capacity. Fortunately, the term is usually enough that even non-truck enthusiasts have a general idea of what kind of truck you mean.

In the RV world, when a towable trailer had a “half-ton” categorization, it originally meant that the travel trailer was a half-ton truck towable. Today that’s not necessarily true. In many cases, it’s another way of saying it’s a lighter-weight RV compared to others. The weight category sits between the “lightweight” label and a full-weight travel trailer.

For example, Keystone’s Cougar Series includes the regular Cougars and the Cougar Half-Ton travel trailers. All but the smallest Cougar Half-Tons can’t be safely towed by pickup trucks in the 150/1500 Series, but each of those Cougar models is lighter than its full-weight counterpart.

10 Best Travel Trailers for Half Ton Trucks

5 Things to Look for in a Half-Ton Towable RV

Your half-ton truck can probably carry a good deal. You first need to know how much it can safely tow. Then you need to understand the various elements of a travel trailer and how that applies to your half-ton’s capabilities.

1. GVWR vs. UVW

If the total weight of your gear exceeds the GVWR of the travel trailer, you’re shaking your fist at a dangerous fate. It’s not enough to know what your truck can haul when you only compare it to the UVW. You need to compare it with the GVWR.

UVW is the dry weight of the travel trailer, exactly what it weighs when it clears the last hurdle on the assembly line.

GVWR is a weight limit you can’t safely exceed once all your gear is stored, accessories packed, and tanks are filled. It’s the more important weight when matched against your half-ton’s capabilities. In fact, you want to keep your total weight at 80% below the GVWR.

Things to Look for in a Half-Ton Towable RV Length

The longest travel trailer for 1/2-ton trucks on this list is nearly 35 feet. We wouldn’t have put it on the list if it were dangerous to tow with a half-ton truck. Just remember, when you’re getting into lengths that high, the small window between dry weight and your half-ton towing capacity becomes smaller and smaller.

You don’t want to purchase a travel trailer with a dry weight so close to your truck’s capability that simply tossing your backpack on the trailer exceeds the limits of your truck.

3. Tongue Weight

The tongue weight is the measurement of the downward force from the tongue of the travel trailer on the hitch of your half-ton truck. Too little, and your travel trailer is prone to fishtailing. Too much, and it presses down on the truck’s back tires, raising the front tires.

Just because your travel trailer for 1/2 ton trucks has a tongue weight of 900 lbs. doesn’t mean it will stay that way. That’s what it is in a bubble, with no outside factors. Front loading your travel trailer increases that 900 lbs. Rear loading your travel trailer lowers the 900 lbs.

4. Sleeping Capacity

Fortunately, you don’t have to worry too much about this issue too much. There are plenty of travel trailers for half-ton trucks that can sleep as many as you can cram in the cab.

Things to Look for in a Half-Ton Towable RV Amenities

It’s always a good idea to do your homework on the amenities. Have a list ready of what amenities you need, and want but can live without, and must avoid helping narrow down your search.

These lists will save a lot of time and keep you on track when searching for the best travel trailer for 1/2 ton trucks you desire.

4 FAQs About Half-Ton Towable Travel Trailers

1. does a half-ton towable fifth-wheel exist.

Half-ton towable fifth-wheels sure do exist, though there aren’t many models available. There’s the Palomino Puma 255RKS , the Jayco Eagle HT 24RE , the KZ Durango Half-Ton D230RKD , and more. You just have to be very careful about your towing capacity. Many claim their half-ton towable, but you may need to special order a new truck with a heavy-duty tow package.

2. How Much Do Half Ton Towable RVs Cost?

FAQs About Half-Ton Towable Travel Trailers How Much Do Half-Ton Towable RVs Cost?

Half-ton travel trailer prices range anywhere between $25k and $75k, depending on what you want and what comes with it.

3. Can You Double Tow With a Half-Ton Truck?

It’s possible, but you must be careful about the tongue weight and the towing capacity of the half-ton truck. Also, several states have strict regulations on double towing , regardless of the pulling vehicle.

To get the payload capacity, you need to know the GVWR and the curb weight. GVWR is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating while the curb weight is the truck’s weight when empty but with all of its fluids (including fuel). Subtract curb weight from GVWR, and you have your payload capacity.

What’s The Biggest Camper I Can Pull With a ½ Ton Truck?

Half-ton trucks can tow 14,000 lbs. using a heavy-duty tow package. Standard half-ton pickups are safe between 8,000 and 9,000 lbs. You also want to consider the mass of the travel trailer you want to hitch up.

Your truck may be able to tow the weight, but a long trailer that starts swaying too much can throw a truck off the road.

Final Thoughts on Travel Trailers for Half Ton Pickup Trucks

Half-tons are a misnomer, and they certainly aren’t the trucks of the 1940s. F-150s and 1500s have a much higher payload capacity and can tow more than their namesakes imply. Now that you know what they’re capable of, there’s no reason to wait any longer for that dream travel trailer for half ton trucks.

15 Best Travel Trailers For Half-Ton Trucks

Travel Trailers For Half Ton Trucks Cover

Sharing is caring!

Half-ton trucks are certainly the most popular truck size on the market. They’re powerful enough for towing and being reasonably economical vehicles for daily use. Before towing an RV, you’ll need to consider the travel trailers half-ton trucks can safely handle.

When you shop for travel trailers half-ton trucks can tow, you need to understand your truck’s specifications. Half-ton trucks do have towing limitations. Selecting a travel trailer that fits your half-ton truck’s towing capacity can be daunting.

As you read through this article, we’ll suggest the best travel trailers for half-ton trucks and share a bit about half-ton trucks towing capacities.

What Is a ½ Ton Truck?

What Is a Half Ton Truck

Before we jump into our list of travel trailers half-ton trucks can tow, here’s what you need to know about this truck category.

First, it’s helpful to understand a bit of math. One ton is equal to 2,000 pounds. So, a ½ ton is 1,000 pounds. Your ½ ton pick-up weighs much more than 1,000 pounds, so this term doesn’t refer to the vehicle’s weight.

When pickup trucks first started out, this quarter system defined how much the truck could haul in the cargo bed. Back in the 1930s and 1940s, it was pretty accurate. Today’s half-ton pickups can haul as much as a full ton in their cargo bed.

The Department of Transportation has its own classification system that’s more accurate. The quarter system became ingrained in American Culture, so that’s why we still use it.

  • GVWR: 7,250 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,435 lbs.

Jayco didn’t name this line the Jay Feather for nothing. This series of lightweight travel trailers for half-ton trucks are perfect for smaller vehicles and trucks. The Jay Feather 25RB is ideal for couples who want plenty of space or need extra room for mobility equipment due to the wide floor the slideout provides.

The rear bathroom has all the counter space, shower space, and commode elbow room you could ask for in a travel trailer. You’ll even find decent walkway space in the master bedroom. The real question is, what aren’t you going to put in the walk-in closet-sized pantry?

13. Cruiser RV Radiance 26KB

Travel Trailers for ½ Ton Trucks Cruiser RV Radiance 26KB Exterior

✅ The king-size bed and massive storage are impressive in this 30-foot coach!

⛔ The rear vanity sink might be tight for some.

  • UVW: 6,152 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 750 lbs.
  • Length: 30.11 ft.
  • GVWR: 7,750 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,566 lbs.

Designed with couples in mind, the Cruiser RV Radiance 26KB is a travel trailer under 6,500 pounds that’s ideal for ½ ton trucks.

Modern styling brings a touch of class to this coach. The kitchen has a four-burner stove with an oven and a two-compartment sink, increasing the joy of cooking on the road. The dinette has large windows for perfect views of your surroundings.

The most impressive features of the Radiance 26KB are the bathroom and the expansive storage. You would never know you were in a smaller travel trailer bathroom. The dual sinks and divided vanity are unique features found more frequently in larger travel trailers or RVs.

14. KZ Connect C322BHK

Travel Trailers for ½ Ton Trucks KZ Connect C322BHK Exterior

✅ The bunkhouse dinette is great for full-timers who roadschool their children!

⛔ The bunkhouse half bath would’ve been a great mudroom if it had an entry door.

  • UVW: 7,970 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 890 lbs.
  • Length: 37.1 ft.
  • GVWR: 9,560 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,590 lbs.
  • Sleep: 5-10

If your family loves to travel and have adventures, the KZ Connect C322BHK is a huge travel trailer that’s light enough to pull with a ½ ton truck. You will need a mid or upper-level trim on your truck for more towing capacity since this is a travel trailer of over 9,000 pounds.

Parents will enjoy the fact that this is a travel trailer with a bath and a half. Mom and dad don’t have to share a bathroom with the kiddos. Having a space to yourself with no interruptions (ideally), is a vacation unto itself.

Besides the outstanding bathroom arrangement, this travel trailer has a slideout with a 70-inch sofa and dinette. The back of the trailer has an additional slideout with a convertible dinette.

15. Flagstaff Shamrock 235S

Travel Trailers for ½ Ton Trucks Flagstaff Shamrock 235S Exterior

✅ You can access the bathroom and fridge with the slideout pushed in.

⛔ Lot or boondocking isn’t recommended in soft shell RVs for safety reasons.

  • UVW: 5,639 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 738 lbs.
  • Length: 24.10 ft.
  • GVWR: 6,898 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,259 lbs.

We like the idea of a travel trailer that can hold many people but isn’t huge. The 23-foot Flagstaff Shamrock 235S hybrid travel trailer has plenty of room inside for the whole family but isn’t a beast to pull behind your pick-up.

This travel trailer under 6,000 pounds is light enough for ½ ton trucks and some larger SUVs. You’ll have plenty of seats and sleeping space while you travel.

Inside, the large slideout has a roomy dinette and a 60-inch convertible sofa (or theater seating). Each end of the camper is a fold-out soft shell queen size bed. To keep things cozy, this camper also has a gas fireplace.

In short, the main cabin space is truly a high-end travel trailer with the best features, but the beds are pop-up-like fold-out beds. In the end, you get the space of a long travel trailer but the weight of a mid-size.

What’s the Biggest Travel Trailer You Can Pull with a ½ Ton Truck?

Whats the Biggest Travel Trailer You Can Pull with a Half Ton Truck

New truck owners often buy an RV only to discover that their truck can’t handle the load. Each truck model has a different towing capacity. The biggest travel trailer you can pull with a ½ ton truck depends on your particular truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

Half-ton towable is a classification you’ll see applied frequently to travel trailers. If you see a travel trailer that’s designated as half-ton towable, there’s a general assumption that a ½ ton truck is capable of towing that trailer.

However, this isn’t always the case. Even if the coach is “half-ton towable,” your pickup may not have the right components to handle the load. Before spending your hard-earned cash, know the actual GVWR for your truck.

You’ll find the GVWR in your truck’s owner’s manual and on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb. American auto manufacturers use multiple engines, transmissions, and other parts in different variations of their trucks. So you have to know what your pickup can and can’t handle.

Can a ½ Ton Truck Pull 10,000 Pounds?

Can a ½ Ton Truck Pull 10,000 Pound Travel Trailer

There are some truck models that come with trim options that beef up the transmission, suspension, and engine capacity of a ½ ton truck. These trucks are generally designated as “heavy-duty.” The ½ ton trucks with heavy-duty tow packages can pull a travel trailer that weighs over 12,000 pounds.

However, even with these upgraded features, 12,000 pounds is pretty close to the maximum GVWR for all half-ton trucks. A lighter towable trailer is preferable to protect your vehicle’s engine and extend the life of your truck’s life.

The 5 Popular ½ Ton Trucks Best for Towing Travel Trailers?

Which ½ Ton Trucks Are Best for Towing Travel Trailers

If you want to upgrade your pickup for towing a travel trailer, you’ve got a range of choices. Almost all truck manufacturers make a ½ ton truck, which means you have plenty of options. This doesn’t make shopping for a truck easier.

How Much Weight Can an Electric Truck Pull

How Much Weight Can an Electric Truck Pull

Electric Vehicle (EV) trucks are making a big showing on the car market right now. With quiet running, and powerful engines, it seems like an electric truck is a great option for towing your travel trailer.

While this, in theory, is true, the technology is still so new that there are some limitations to towing with an electric truck. The biggest limitation is the distance you can travel on a single charge while towing.

Most EV trucks are struggling with distance while towing. You should consider this carefully when pondering the purchase of an EV truck.

Kelly Blue Book has some great information on EV trucks if you are considering an EV truck.

Here are the towing capacities for the EV trucks currently on the market:

  • Ford F-150 Lightning: 10,000 pounds
  • Chevrolet Silverado EV: 10,000 pounds
  • GMC Hummer EV Pickup: 7,500 pounds
  • Rivian R1T: 11,000 pounds
  • Tesla CyberTruck: 14,000 pounds

Rig Roundup: 7 Half-Ton Towable Trailers You Can Pull With Your Pickup

Looking for a trailer to tow with your mid- or full-size pickup truck? These are some of our favorite half-ton trailers and fifth wheels.

By Roadtrippers

Mid- and full-size pickup trucks are a popular choice when it comes to tow vehicles because of their ability to tow and fit passengers comfortably. They also have fuel-efficient engines, easier driveability when compared to larger trucks, and RV-friendly add-on options. But when selecting a trailer, you need to carefully consider the payload and towing capacity of your half-ton truck.

What Does Half-Ton Towable Mean?

Half-ton towable is a confusing term in reference to RVing. Half-ton traditionally refers to the payload capacity of the truck, meaning that it can generally carry about 1,000 pounds of cargo, passengers, and trailer tongue weight. A half-ton towable refers to trailers that can theoretically be towed by a half-ton vehicle. In real life, however, truck payload capacity varies greatly in this category, making the classification very misleading. Make sure to check your specific truck’s payload capacity as these classifications vary from make and model.

What Is a Half-Ton Fifth Wheel?

A half-ton fifth wheel is a fifth wheel trailer that can be towed by the majority of half-ton trucks on the market. Pay careful attention to numbers when shopping in this category: Many fifth wheels that are classified as half-ton towables would max out the payload capacity of virtually every pickup truck in the half-ton class.

Can a Half-Ton Pull a Travel Trailer?

Half-ton trucks are extremely popular tow vehicles. Travel trailers that fit within their payload and towing capacities average from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds and 5,000 to 13,000 pounds respectively. Popular half-ton trucks include the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Titan, and GMC Sierra 1500.

Important Features to Look for in Half-Ton Towable RVs

If you’re looking for a trailer to tow with a half-ton truck, consider the following:

Tongue Weight

It’s imperative that you include the tongue weight of the trailer, or the weight placed on the hitch, when calculating your payload capacity. We’ve listed each featured trailer’s hitch weight in the specs below.

Since you can tow a decent-sized trailer with a half-ton towable, consider its length, especially if you’re looking to camp in national and state parks. You’ll need to add your rig’s length to your vehicle’s length to determine what size site you’ll need. According to the Camper Report , if you have a combined length of 35 feet, you’ll fit at 73 percent of all national park campgrounds.

Also, many travel trailers are lightweight and can be towed by a range of vehicles, but remember that the longer your trailer is, the more susceptible it will be to crosswinds and other weather conditions.

When shopping for a half-ton towable, you should pay attention to the trailer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) instead of the dry weight, or unloaded vehicle weight (UVW), since this number will need to be below—ideally, well below—your truck’s towing capacity.

Half-Ton Towable RVs

If a half-ton towable fits your RV lifestyle, here are some options with a variety of different floor plans to consider with gross vehicle weight ratings under 10,500 pounds. These seven trailers can easily be towed by many half-ton trucks on the market.

CrossRoads RV Sunset Trail SS212RB

Layout for RV with chaise lounge and king-sized bed.

Couples will be super comfortable in this half-ton towable layout. Complete with a king-sized bed, sectional style sofa with a chaise lounge, spacious shower, large sink, open layout, and walk-in pantry, the lightweight Sunset Trail doesn’t sacrifice space, even though it’s just below 26 feet long. For its size, this floor plan packs a lot in, making it ideal for couples looking to enjoy smaller campsites in national and state parks.

FEATURES AND OPTIONS WE LOVE:

Camping in the summer heat? You can add a second air conditioner to this rig. Add the Solar Freedom 2 package for two 190-watt panels and a 2000-watt inverter.

Keystone Outback 342CG

Exterior view of 38-foot travel trailer by Keystone.

Keystone’s award-winning Outback is an ideal option for those looking to match a toy hauler with their mid- or full-size pickup truck. While lengthy, the Outback’s GVWR comes in at 10,500 pounds, so you have more than 2,500 pounds of cargo capacity for your toys. This floor plan sleeps eight and has a separate main bedroom with plenty of storage and a king-sized bed. The garage area has flip-down bunk beds, and you’ll also find a sofa sleeper in the main area. Ideal for families, sliding barn doors add privacy while a fireplace gives warmth in the main gathering area. There’s even a built-in kennel for pets.

The Outback 342CG’s layout is designed to be wheelchair accessible and has a 56-inch-wide extended ramp door.

Heartland North Trail 24 DBS

This layout is perfect for grandparents that sometimes take their grandkids along. The double-sized bunks with step storage are located in the rear of the open-layout main area. There’s a U-shaped dinette and jackknife sofa to lounge on, a walk-in shower, and a queen-sized bed in the front of the rig. Owners note that even at nearly 33 feet long, this rig still tows like it’s under 30 feet.

You can replace the dinette with theater seating if desired.

nuCamp Cirrus 620

Interior view of truck camper with platform bed and seating area.

Designed specifically for half-ton trucks, this truck camper weighs in at 1,500 pounds and comes standard with a queen-sized bed, a 210-watt solar kit, a water management system, a hidden cassette toilet, and a decent amount of storage. You can control the fan and lighting with the SmartCamp app.

Jayco Eagle HT Fifth Wheel 24RE

Interior of RV living space with corner kitchen island

With a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds, this half-ton towable fifth wheel has a flexible layout. It comes in under 30 feet long, so it’s easily maneuverable and can fit at smaller campsites. Ideal for couples who tend to host guests, the front half of the rig is a suite with a queen-sized bed and lots of storage.

The back half of the rig houses the kitchen and living area, which has the option for theater seating in place of a tri-fold sofa or a booth dinette instead of a freestanding table and chairs. Cooks will love the walk-in pantry.

RV floor plan

A linen closet in the bedroom is prepped for the addition of a washer and dryer. Add the 360-degree security kit for side and rear cameras and a 7-inch monitor.

Venture RV Stratus SR261VBH

Interior of RV living space with kitchen, living area, and double over double bunks

There’s no shortage of storage with this floor plan. With three pantries, pass-through storage in the front bedroom, and plenty of other creatively hidden drawers and cabinets, you can take everything you need and more on the road. The floor plan sleeps four comfortably, with a true queen-sized bed and double bed over double bed bunk. There’s also a U-dinette that can be converted to more beds if needed.

Outside you’ll find a cooking station, shower, marine-grade speakers, and an 18-foot power awning, complete with LED lights. We love that this lightweight, 30-foot trailer can still comfortably fit a family.

RV floor plan

If you’re looking to complete your outdoor kitchen, you can add on an option with a swing-away, bumper-mounted griddle. And for easy maneuvering, you can add on a backup camera.

A Note on Rig Specs

It’s incredibly important to pay close attention to specs when shopping for a travel trailer. Use the VIN (vehicle identification number) to find the towing capacity and payload capacity for your specific tow vehicle.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): The maximum loaded weight of your trailer as determined by the manufacturer. You should never exceed this weight rating when your RV is stocked with all of your gear, propane, and fresh water.

GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating): The maximum weight of both the vehicle and trailer, plus the passengers and cargo in both.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight): The weight of your trailer as manufactured with no cargo, propane, or water. This is often referred to as “dry weight.”

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity): This is the difference between your UVW and your GVWR, telling you how much weight you can safely add to your trailer. Pay close attention to the cargo carrying capacity if you intend to travel with a lot of gear.

Tongue Weight: This is the amount of weight pressing down on the hitch ball that is attached to your tow vehicle. It is extremely important to make sure that the tongue weight of a travel trailer does not exceed your tow vehicle’s payload capacity.

GCT RV

The 4 Best Travel Trailers For 1/2 Ton Trucks

You have finally found your dream RV trailer, as it contains all the features and accessories you desire to fulfill your wanderlust and love for adventure. From giant slide-outs to an aesthetically appealing kitchen, this camper has all in store for the travel enthusiasts. There is one caveat to this whole deal though: the trailer is too heavy for your half-ton truck to drag properly.

Fifth-wheel RVs are highly sought after in the community of adventurers, as it gives them the liberty of carrying their mobile home to far remote lands without any hassle of setting up a traditional camp every time. Depending upon your personal preference, you can make various customizations in the camper, which includes floor plans, amenities, and interior décor. Some of these travel trailers can be substantially heavy in terms of their weight, and not all of us have the financial resources to purchase heavy-duty trucks – like Ford F-350 or a Chevrolet Silverado – that are perfect complement to them. If you are an owner of a half-ton pickup truck, then you would have to limit your search options in the market.

Factors to Consider Before Buying an Ultra-Lightweight Camper

RV shoppers should have good knowledge about the payload limits and dimensions of the campers in the market before they attach it to the rear of their truck for the next adventure trip. You would have to carry out a conservative approach when it comes to choosing an appropriate option that can be pulled away easily with the engine power of your vehicle. You might purchase an 8000-pound travel trailer and feel relieved because you know that your truck has the towing capacity of up to 12,000 pounds, but that is not how it works. There is always some degree of variation to the hitch weight of the travel trailer, because it is occupied by passengers and furniture items – which can add to an increase in its overall weight. This is the reason; you should maintain a fair gap between the max load capacity of your tow vehicle and the weight of the camper, because it can soon be filled up by other additions during any trip. There are various measures that you must take before purchasing a camper for your upcoming ventures into the wood.

  • The independent front suspension of the truck should be leveled at a high position, as that would make it difficult for you to attach to the front holder of a travel trailer. The soft springs usually found in these trucks can be customized according to the preference of the driver, which would allow them to firmly drag the trailer without relying too much on the traction of rubber tires.
  • Rather than solely relying on the towing power of the pickup, you should be looking at the gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr), which gives a fair estimate about the acceleration and velocity achievable by the vehicle once it is subjected with heavy load.

Best Half Ton Towable Fifth Wheels

Investing in an RV is both exciting and nervy. There are so many choices, and if you're getting a trailer, you have to be sure your truck can tow it. For anyone who doesn't want to worry about the size of their tower, half ton towable 5th wheels are perfect.

But what are the best 1/2 ton towable trucks on the market? Are they even safe with a smaller truck? It's important to know that not all half ton trucks are created equally, and so even a smaller 5th wheel might not be compatible.

Trucks are getting better every year, and most modern 1/2 ton pick up trucks can tow between 5,000-12,000 lbs, but the older and less looked after it is will hinder its towing capabilities. So, always take the age and condition of your truck into consideration before buying a 1/2 ton towable 5th wheel.

In this article we look at some of the best lighter 5th wheels on the market. We also include a guide on what to look for when choosing an ideal fifth wheel for your half ton truck. We've also added an FAQ section so you won't be left short and will have a better understanding of what to look for.

With that said, let's take a look at some of the best half ton towable 5th wheels.

What Should I Look For When Buying a 1/2 Ton Towable Fifth Wheel?

Half-ton towable fifth wheels are useful, but you have to buy the right one to enjoy all of its perks. After all, investing in a fifth wheel will do you no good if it does not suit your needs. Here's a list of things to look for when you're considering buying one.

Clean Layout

The first thing that you have to notice in a fifth wheel is the floor plan the manufacturers are offering. It has to be clean with a practical space distribution.

You should avoid floor plans that have a cluttered appearance. They don't have much room for you to move around or relax while you are out on a trip. So, go for a properly set-up floor plan so that you do not feel fatigued when you are out there to wind down.

Best Half Ton Towable Fifth Wheels

The first thing you notice about this RV is just how beautiful it is. The interior design is not only gorgeous but functional, too. We love the optional off-the-grid camping package for those who like to travel off the beaten path in comfort and style.

This RV is loaded with safety features and high-quality appliances and has enough storage space for the whole family. That said, it sleeps six, which means it might be a bit much for smaller trucks.

Alternatively, you can opt for the theater seating instead of the pull-out bed in the living area if you don’t need to accommodate as many people. Either way, it's a beautiful 5th wheel and one a half ton truck should be capable of towing quite comfortably.

Bottom Line

This RV is great for the family that loves to travel in style. We love that there’s an option for an off-the-grid package so you can take it on different adventures with all the creature comforts of home.

Half-Ton Truck Towing Terms You Should Know

Before you have a look at the fifth wheel options available to you, you need to understand their basic terminology. Keeping this in view, we have described the common terms for you.

Tow Capacity

The towing capacity refers to the amount of weight your vehicle can support when it comes to towing a trailer. Most vehicles can tow fifth wheels weighing up to 12,000 lbs quite comfortably.

The payload is the maximum weight that can be loaded on a truck. The fifth wheel's weight has to be just right so that it is easy for the truck to withstand it. If the payload exceeds the vehicle’s designated limit, it can cause serious accidents. To calculate the payload of your truck, you should subtract its curb weight from GVWR.

Hitch Weight

Hitch weight, also called tongue weight, is the amount of weight that a fifth wheel puts on the axle of your vehicle. It directly affects the payload capacity of a truck, so buyers have to be mindful of it.

Towing a Fifth Wheel with a Half-Ton Pickup Truck: All you need to know

Aaron Richardson

  • Last Updated: February 22, 2024
  • 21 minutes read

Fifth wheel campers are increasingly popular thanks to having the spaciousness and luxury of a motorhome, yet you can easily unhitch from the tow vehicle without having to completely break camp. Of course, a pickup truck also gets around town, and the RV park easier than a motorhome.

However, fifth-wheel campers also tend to be heavy. Some of them are downright enormous, to the point where you need a three-quarter-ton or one-ton pickup truck to tow them safely .

Unfortunately, if you’re not a contractor by trade or a construction worker, then chances are you don’t own one of these trucks.

They tend to be large, very powerful, and expensive. Not to mention they all tend to be very thirsty when it comes to fuel consumption.

Though there is a narrow window in the fifth wheel camper niche of trailers that can indeed be towed by a half-ton truck.

The benefit here is that half-ton trucks tend to be less expensive to buy and own than their three-quarter-ton and one-ton big brothers.

If you have a half-ton truck or you’re thinking about buying a half-ton pickup truck you might be wondering if you can tow a fifth wheel camper with it?

The truth is, some fifth wheel campers can indeed be towed by a half-ton pickup truck, but they aren’t always easy to find. Fortunately, we’ve done most of the research for you.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the best fifth-wheel campers that can be towed by a half-ton pickup truck as well as some of the basic towing principles that come into play.

The 7 Best Half-Ton Towable Fifth-Wheel Campers in 2023

Finding the best fifth wheel camper that can be towed by a half-ton truck can be a little tricky.

Palomino uses a lot of wood in the frame and body material with aluminum sidewalls.

This translates into a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,800-pounds, all within a length of 27.75-feet. It also has a hitch weight of just 1,102-pounds.

With a gross vehicle weight rating of only 8,800-pounds and a hitch weight of 1,102-pounds the 2019 Palomino Puma 255RKS can be towed by most of the popular half-ton trucks you see in the US and North American markets.

Palomino – Puma 255RKS

Though if you have a Ford F-150, you’ll want to make sure you have the V6 Eco Boost engine with a trim level that includes their robust towing package.

The 2019 Palomino Puma 255RKS has a rear kitchen with an attractive curved countertop that was designed to maximize the available working space.

It includes a spacious refrigerator and a lot of overhead cabinets. In the main living area, there is a comfortable sofa that faces a slide-out dinette.

There’s also a nicely outfitted entertainment center with good sightlines. There’s a small hallway that connects the living area to the queen size master bedroom and the bathroom, which has a wardrobe closet, a shower, toilet, and sink.

2. 2019 Flagstaff Super Lite 524LWS 5th Wheel

  • GVWR of 9,165-pounds
  • Dry Weight of 7,149-pounds
  • Payload Capacity of 2,016-pounds
  • Hitch Weight of 1,165-pounds
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 60-gallons
  • Gray Water Tank Capacity of 45-gallons
  • Black Water Tank Capacity of 45-gallons

The 2019 Forest River Flagstaff Super Lite 524LWS was designed with a spacious interior, a master suite with a touch of luxury, and many of the features you look for in a multi-seasonal fifth wheel camper.

It has a lightweight yet durable aluminum body construction with fiberglass sidewalls.

This translates into a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,165-pounds and a hitch weight of 1,165-pounds, as well as a length of just over 28-feet.

The 2019 Forest River Flagstaff Super Lite 524LWS has a GVWR of 9,165-pounds and a hitch weight of 1,165-pounds.

This realistically puts it just out of reach of the 2020 Ford F-150 and the 2020 Dodge Ram.

Flagstaff Super Lite 524LWS

Yet the Silverado, Sierra, and the highest trim level of the Toyota Tundra are still technically in play.

The cold weather carpeted master bedroom is incorporated into a slide-out section, which helps maximize the space when you are set up yet minimizes for towing at highway speed and reversing. The kitchen and the living area both flow together nicely.

A lot of RV retailers also offer an exterior gas grill with the purchase, just to add a little bit of something special to the value.

It’s also nice on those really hot days when you don’t want the heat from cooking supper to compete with the 13,500 BTU air conditioner.

3. 2019 Forest River Arctic Wolf 285DRL4 5th Wheel RV

  • Dry Weight of 8,275-pounds.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,625-pounds
  • GVWR of 9,800-pounds
  • Hitch Weight of 1,452-pounds
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 49-gallons
  • Gray Water Tank Capacity of 84-gallons
  • Black Water Tank Capacity of 42-gallons

There’s a reason why the Cherokee Arctic Wolf is one of Forest River’s most popular half ton towable fifth wheel fifth-wheel campers.

Not only is it built to be durable, but it also has a lot of the creature comforts you want when you are adventuring far from home or off the beaten path.

While the aluminum body construction and fiberglass sidewalls do save a bit of weight, some of the other characteristics makes this arguably one of the heaviest fifth wheel trailers that can possibly be towed by a half-ton pickup truck.

In fact it weighs in at a hefty 9,800-pound gross vehicle weight rating, with a hitch weight of 1,452-pounds.

The marketing slogans wrapped around the Cherokee Arctic Wolf 285DRL4 make it sound like towing it with a half-ton pickup truck is a breeze.

Cherokee Arctic Wolf 285DRL4

Unfortunately, its heavy gross vehicle weight means that it’s only truly safe to tow at speed with the highest trim levels of the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 Eco Boost with towing package.

If you were going to park it up permanently at a long-term RV campsite, you might be able to move and position it with the Silverado and Sierra, but it’s not advisable to take it on the road with those half-ton pickup trucks.

The master suite with its queen-size bed is located in the front of the Cherokee Arctic Wolf 285DRL4.

It has a slide-outside that maximizes the space. The bathroom is adjacent which gives the master suite a little extra privacy.

The kitchen is modest, yet fully functional and comes with a residential refrigerator.

The living room has theater seating with power massage, and there’s a tri-fold sofa bed for times when you have overnight guests.

4. Rockwood Ultra Lite 2441WS Fifth Wheel Camper

  • Sleeps up to 6 people
  • Gray Water Tank Capacity of up to 45-gallons
  • Black Water Tank Capacity of up to 45-gallons

The Rockwood Ultra Lite with the 2441WS floor plan was engineered with weight-saving measures in mind.

It’s largely made from aluminum and fiberglass to keep the total dry weight and hitch weight down. While the interior still feels spacious and comfortable.

The Rockwood Ultra Lite 2441WS fifth wheel trailer is based largely on an aluminum body and frame for lightweight durability.

The sidewalls are then made from sturdy fiberglass. This means that the 28.42-foot Rockwood Ultra Lite has a dry weight of 7,149-pounds and a hitch weight of just 1,165-pounds..

This puts it reasonably in range with all the popular half-ton pickup trucks in the North American market.

Though you might be pushing it a little with a standard package trim level of the 2020 Ford F-150.

Rockwood Ultra Lite 2441WS

If you do have an F-150 you want to make sure it has the dual turbo Eco Boost engine and the trim level includes their robust towing package.

The interior of this fifth wheel camper is truly spacious for its relatively small footprint. This is thanks in part to the large open central space as well as the way the kitchen blends with the living room.

Though it is a little sparse when it comes to countertop space. Despite the limited footprint of trailers, this one offers a large open area in the center of the living space.

The entertainment center in this fifth wheel camper is impressive. Not only is there a TV in the main living room area, but a second one in the master suite.

The sofa and the dinette are also thoughtfully angled to let you watch TV while you eat without having to crane your neck.

It comes with a queen-size bed, but there is arguably enough space to upgrade to a king.

5. The Escape 5.0TA Fifth Wheel

  • Dry weight of 3,810-pounds
  • GVWR of 5,500-pounds
  • Hitch weight of 630-pounds

Escape trailers are built one at a time on a structural steel frame, in a factory based out of Chilliwack, British Columbia.

The Chilliwack, British Columbia is lightweight and easy to tow, as it’s more of a travel trailer with dual axles and a fifth wheel tongue.

Some people might argue that this is the baby fifth wheel of the bunch. Still there are some people who just want to travel light and small, to spend most of their time adventuring.

If this sounds lie you than the 5,500-pound gross vehicle rating and 630-pound hitch weight of The Escape 5.0TA might just be perfect.

It has a molded fiberglass exterior shell that was specifically designed with aerodynamics in mind.

Escape 5.0TA

This reduces some of the drag you often experience when towing a fifth-wheel camper.

It only has a dry weight of 5,500 pounds and a hitch weight of 630-pounds, which means it’s comfortably in range for any half-ton pickup truck to tow.

The interior of the Escape 5.0TA is arguably cozy with a lot of the space being used for the main living area.

Though the modest master suite in the front of the fifth wheel camper is large enough to hold a queen-size bed.

At the rear, you will find a dining area and a modest kitchen with a U-shaped dinette.

6. 2020 JAYCO Eagle Series Fifth Wheel 25.5REOK

  • Dry Weight of 7,775-pounds
  • Payload Capacity of 1,405-pounds
  • GVWR of 9,995-pounds
  • Hitch Weight of 2,220-pounds
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 42.0-gallons
  • 2 Gray Water Tanks With A Total Capacity of 65-gallons
  • Black Water Tank Capacity of 32.5-gallons

The 2020 Jayco Eagle with the HT 25.5REOK floor plan has a nicely appointed and spacious interior.

It even sleeps up to 6 people which makes it a nice option for families with multiple children who want to travel.

The base body materials are largely made from aluminum, which saves weight. Yet the side walls are made from fiberglass which improves rigidity and adds stability.

This translates into a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,995-pounds and a hitch weight of 2,220-pounds, all in a 28.6-foot length.

The 2020 Jayco Eagle HT 25.5REOK tips the scales with a gross weight of almost 10,000-pounds. This puts it out of range of some half-ton trucks.

Though the highest trim levels of the F-150 with the Eco-Boost engine and tow package as well as the highest trim levels of the 2020 Toyota Tundra.

Eagle HT 25.5REOK

The 2020 Jayco Eagle HT 25.5REOK’s main living area gets its extra elbow room from a large slide-out, which also holds a convertible sleeper couch as well as a dinette area that can hold up to four people at a time.

The entertainment center sits relatively close to the modest kitchen. If you like there is even an optional electric fireplace that can be added to the equation.

For being somewhat small the kitchen comes with a refrigerator, a 3-burner range top stove with oven, and a microwave.

It has a curved countertop that holds the kitchen sink while also providing a few square inches for workspace.

The master suite bedroom with its queen-size bed and bathrooms at the front of the trailer.

The dual door bathroom essentially serves as a buffer area between the master suite and the rest of the interior living space.

7. 2020 Grand Design Reflection 150 Series 230RL

  • Dry Weight of 6,945-pounds
  • Payload Capacity of 2,607-pounds
  • GVWR of 9,495-pounds
  • Hitch Weight of 1,195-pounds
  • Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 52-gallons
  • Gray Water Tank Capacity of 71-gallons
  • Black Water Tank Capacity of 39-gallons

The 2020 Grand Design Reflection 150 Series with the 230RL floor plan was designed to have a spacious interior.

If it’s true that luxury is defined by light and space, then the Reflection 230RL, with its large windows and skylight stands out from the rest of the crowd.

The 2020 Grand Design Reflection 230RL has a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,495-pounds and a hitch weight of 1,195-pounds.

This means you can tow it with just about any half-ton pickup truck. For the f-150, just make sure you have the V6 Eco Boost with the added towing package.

Like a lot of light weight fifth wheel campers the Grand Design Reflection employs an aluminum structure in the body with rigid fiberglass side walls.

This saves on weight while also adding strength to the overall equation. It also translates into a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,495-pounds and a hitch weight of 1,195-pounds.

Which is pretty good for a 28-foot long trailer that’s engineered for a touch of luxury.

Reflection 150 Series 230RL

The large slide out along the wall of the main living area gives the interior of the 2020 Grand Design Reflection 230RL a truly spacious feeling.

There is a large entertainment center that is thoughtfully angled to allow for easy viewing from nearly every angle. There is even a pair of comfortable theater seats in the back.

The kitchen is positioned in the corner of the main living area, and tightly hugs the wall to maximize the open feel.

There’s also an optional countertop extension for families who prioritize a little bit of extra workspace when cooking.

This fifth wheel camper has a rather large bathroom with a shower and overhead skylight.

It helps to buffer the master suite in the front of the camper which has a queen-size bed as well as a lot of thoughtful storage space.

What About Half-Ton Truck For Fifth-Wheel Towing?

When it comes to towing a fifth-wheel trailer with a half-ton truck, the irony is that it isn’t so much of a towing capacity issue as it is a payload capacity issue.

Though there are some ways to safely address this problem, without putting your half-ton truck or trailer at undue risk when towing at highway speeds.

How Does Payload Capacity Affect A Half-Ton Truck’s Towing Performance?

Payload capacity is the truck manufacturer’s rating of how much weight the cargo box can handle. This also factors in a little storage space in the cab.

When it comes to a fifth-wheel camper trailer most half-ton pickup trucks don’t have the robust suspension and other characteristics to handle the hitch weight of the pin.

So, right off the bat, we made sure to keep a close eye on the hitch weight of the fifth wheel campers we reviewed.

The problem is that not all half-ton pickup trucks have the same payload capacity.

Indeed these numbers can vary from one make and model to the next, not to mention the difference in trim levels within a single manufacturer’s line.

Before pulling the trigger on any one of the fifth wheel campers we recommended on this list, you will want to double-check the payload capacity of your own half-ton pickup truck.

In general, the older the truck, the less payload capacity it has. This is due to recent improvements in suspension systems and other related components.

There’s also an increased chance of an older truck having damaged or worn out suspension components.

Even something as seemingly minor as a rust problem on a shackle and hanger can start to rob a half-ton truck of its payload capacity.

For this article, we tried to look for lightweight fifth-wheel campers with reasonable hitch weight numbers, that could put them in the ballpark of being towed by a half-ton pickup truck.

Always double check your specific truck’s specifications and try not to push it to the maximum.

Your payload capacity can still be affected by other cargo in the cab of the truck as well as how much you load into the fifth wheel camper while driving from Point A to Point B.

How Much Can The Average Half-Ton Pickup Truck Tow?

Most of the newer half-ton pickup trucks can tow around 9,000 to 13,000-pounds .

Though there are different trim levels and tow package options that can make these numbers higher or lower for a specific make and model.

At the top of the range, you have the very popular Ford F-150, which can tow a little over 13,000 pounds when the trim level and options are maxed out with the tow package.

The Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Dodge Ram tend to run a little under that but are still in the ballpark.

So, pay attention to your vehicle’s tow rating and make sure it is higher than the fifth wheel camper’s gross vehicle weight rating, which is often expressed as GVWR.

What Are The Most Popular Half Ton Pickup Trucks For Fifth Wheel Towing?

Half-ton pickup trucks are very popular in the United States and Canada.

They have the fuel consumption that a lot of people can live within a daily driver, yet the robust characteristics to be able to earn their keep by working for a living.

Though half-ton pickup trucks are perhaps not as well-received internationally, which limits their selection to a handful of domestically produced vehicles.

The Ford F-150

The Ford F-150

This is the best selling half-ton truck in the world and has been for decades. Ford has recently started transitioning most of the F-150 trim levels to their Eco-Boost technology.

Which is more fuel-efficient but does rob the F-150 of a little bit of the robust torque you used to get from their 5.4-liter V8. It has a maximum tow capacity of up to 8,000-pounds and a payload capacity of 1,988-pounds.

The Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado

This is the runner up to the F-150, with a loyal following all its own. These half-ton pickup trucks have a reputation for adding a few extra creature comforts in the newer, higher trim levels.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado has a maximum tow capacity of 9,800-pounds and a payload capacity of 2,100-pounds.

The Dodge Ram

The Dodge Ram

Originally seen as the perennial bronze star holder in the US domestic truck market, the Dodge Ram has gone through a little bit of a revolution thanks to the use of the Hemi engine.

It has a towing capacity of 8,750-pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 1,900-pounds.

The GMC Sierra

The GMC Sierra

This is a sibling of the Chevrolet Silverado as they are both made under the same General Motors umbrella.

The Sierra tends to have a few more special features which sometimes also beef up the price tag.

It has a towing capacity of up to 9,800-pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 2,100 pounds.

The Toyota Tundra

The Toyota Tundra

The Tundra has undergone some twists of evolution and engineering since making an initial big splash in the US marketplace.

It’s highest trim level with tow package has a towing capacity of up to 10,800 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of up to 1,915-pounds. Just bear in mind that lesser trim levels of the Tundra are not as robust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need a special hitch to tow a fifth wheel camper with a half-ton truck.

Yes, you will need a special hitch, which will need to be installed directly into the cargo box of your half-ton pickup truck.

This is something you will need a specialist to perform. It’s not something you can do on your own.

You should also note that the weight of the hitch itself and the other components will also impact your truck’s payload capacity. Some can weigh up to 100-pounds altogether.

Will Towing A Fifth Wheel Camper Hurt My Gas Mileage?

Towing anything will affect your half-ton pickup truck’s gas mileage. In the case of a heavy fifth wheel camper, you will certainly notice a significant dip in your overall MPG.

Proper maintenance like frequent oil changes, air filter replacements, and using high octane fuel will help improve these numbers.

Still, if you are going to push the near the limits of your towing capacity, you might see the average MPG cut in half. Especially if you have to do a lot of stopping and starting.

Do I Need To Turn Overdrive Off When Towing A Fifth Wheel Camper?

In general, most pickup truck drivers will turn overdrive off when towing. Especially when towing a heavy load or driving over hilly terrain.

This keeps the truck from constantly kicking down, which taxes the engine and leads to poor MPG performance.

Just keep in mind that when overdrive is turned off the truck will have a little bit of lag time when accelerating quickly. You’ll see this even more pronounced in a pickup truck with a turbo engine.

So, Can a Half-Ton Truck Tow a Fifth-Wheel Camper?

The short answer is yes, you can tow a fifth wheel trailer with a half-ton truck. But it’s true that half-ton trucks aren’t ideal for towing a fifth-wheel camper, some can’t do it at all, there are a few rare exceptions in the field.

If you have a half-ton pickup truck with a robust towing package and you are in the market for a fifth wheel camper, you will need to keep a close eye on matching hitch weight to payload capacity and towing capacity.

If you are looking for something ultralightweight, and you are willing to sacrifice a little bit of elbow room, you might want to take a good hard look at the Escape 5.0TA.

It’s small, lightweight, easily maneuverable, and surprisingly aerodynamic. It certainly will take the smallest bite out of your average MPG.

If you place a priority on spaciousness and natural light, then the 2020 Grand Design Reflection 150 Series with the 230RL floorplan might be the perfect fit.

It has skylights and towering windows with a slide-out that maximizes the living room area.

If you want a touch of luxury with a little bit of a glamping feel, then you might want to lean toward the 2019 Forest River Flagstaff Super Lite in the 524LWS floor plan.

It’s spacious inside and has the creature comfort features that a lot of RV adventuring families enjoy.

Whatever your needs are, if you own a half-ton pickup truck and you are thinking about adding a fifth-wheel camper to go along with it, chances are the best option for you is somewhere on this list.
