The trailer body is made up of a welded-aluminum-framed, vacuum-bonded laminated side. Its rear walls have a fiberglass exterior siding that is lightweight yet sturdy and well-insulated.

Standard interior features of the Lance 2445 travel trailer include an enclosed glass shower stall and porcelain toilet. The kitchen offers a 21-inch oven, three-burner range, microwave, 6-cubic-foot fridge, and undermounted residential-style sink.

Electrical equipment includes ducted A/C, a heater, exterior solar quick connect (SAE port), systems monitor panel, and USB, 120V, and 12V power ports. Noted by its builder as designed for “mountain states and western Canada,” the Backcountry 24KRS is delivered with equipment that are options on many other travel trailers. Thermal pane windows, triple-layered roof insulation, insulated slide-out floor, insulated exterior luggage doors, and a fully enclosed, insulated, and heated underbelly make it a good choice for winter or shoulder-season camping. Based on the TAXA Mantis 5.2 (the company’s largest floorplan), the Overland edition retains all of the original’s creature comforts and conveniences while inheriting a higher level of off-grid and long-term camping capability.

The Mantis 5.2 Overland travel trailer is loaded with a fully equipped kitchen, a combo furnace heater/hot water system, storage compartments everywhere, and comfortable sleeping accommodations for four people. An optional pop-up rooftop tent can sleep two more.

TAXA Outdoors added some serious rough-road handling features like a 360-degree rotation/three-axis hitch for optimum trailer control on or off-road. The Mantis 5.2 Overland trailer rides on a powder-coated steel chassis with a 5,200-pound-rated Timbren axle-less suspension system and a 4-inch body lift. This setup gives the trailer 14 inches of ground clearance, perfect for off-road camping adventures.

A mix of aluminum composite panels, Baltic Birch plywood, and an aluminum and steel structural skeleton make up the atypical shape of the TAXA Mantis 5.2 Overland travel trailer. On the long list of available features are handy items like acrylic windows with screens and shades, batwing-style awnings, and exterior hot and cold showers. An integrated 12V electrical system, wet bath with cassette toilet, and 8K-BTU A/C make long trips even more comfortable.

Venture RV Sonic X SN220VRBX : $51,354

How Much Can a Half-Ton Truck Tow?

How much trailer can a half-ton truck — F-150, Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, RAM 1500, Tundra, and Titan — tow ?

As an example, tow ratings for the bestselling Ford F-150 can range from 5,000 to 14,000 pounds. This depends upon cab configuration, truck bed size, 2WD or 4WD, engine size, and the final drive ratios (ring-and-pinion gear set ratios).

In addition, some high ratings require additional payload or towing packages. All these aspects combine to establish a pickup truck’s maximum tow rating — also referred to as the maximum trailer weight rating.   

The bestselling Ford F-150 cab configuration (according to 2022 model sales) is the SuperCrew. We’ll use that as a starting point. The 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew short bed 2WD with a 3.3L V-6 engine and 3.55-ratio axle gears is rated at 5,100 pounds.

On the other end of the scale is the 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew short bed 2WD with a 3.5L turbocharged V-6 engine, 3.55 axle gears, and optional payload package scores a 14,000-pound tow rating.

Detailed tow ratings are listed in your truck’s owner’s manual. Tow ratings for some older trucks can be found on RV.com . The Ford Motor Company website also offers a Towing Guide to help find your truck’s maximum trailer weight rating. 

Travel Trailer Terminology You Should Know

There are a few terms that trailer manufacturers use in their specification charts that you should know and understand.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum permissible weight for a trailer, including all cargo, fluids, LPG, and optional equipment.

Unladen, Dry, Tare, or Base Weight: These all mean the same thing — the total weight of the unloaded trailer in standard equipment trim, with no cargo, fluids (freshwater), or LPG.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC): Sometimes referred to as Rated Cargo Load, this is the maximum amount of cargo weight the trailer can safely hold. This includes everything you load into the trailer, full water tanks, filled propane tanks, and batteries.

Tongue or Hitch Weight: The weight the trailer will place upon the hitch of your truck. More than 500 pounds of tongue weight on a half-ton pickup will likely place undue stress on the rear suspension and unload the front end, adversely affecting the truck’s steering and overall handling. In this case, the use of a weight-distributing hitch can redeploy some of the weight from the hitch back to the trailer’s axle(s).

Overall or Exterior Length: Commonly refers to the length of the trailer from the hitch ball-coupler to the back of the rear bumper.

Every time we post an article or a video about the best travel trailers for half ton trucks, a huge debate ensues. The debate isn’t about the trailers we choose but whether or not half-ton trucks can tow these trailers safely.

We selected all the travel trailers on our list based on modern pickup trucks’ tow capacities with model years from 2020. We can all agree that older pickup trucks can’t handle the same weight that newer pickups can. So, if you own a pickup truck older than 2020, this list is not for you.

4. how do you know your vehicle’s payload capacity, what does half-ton towable mean.

Modern “half-ton” trucks have completely outgrown the term’s original meaning. Back in the 1940s, a “half-ton” truck could carry 1,000 lbs. The term stuck, and it’s still with us today, regardless of the truck’s actual payload capacity. Fortunately, the term is usually enough that even non-truck enthusiasts have a general idea of what kind of truck you mean. 

In the RV world, when a towable trailer had a “half-ton” categorization, it originally meant that the travel trailer was a half-ton truck towable. Today that’s not necessarily true. In many cases, it’s another way of saying it’s a lighter-weight RV compared to others. The weight category sits between the “lightweight” label and a full-weight travel trailer.

Your half-ton truck can probably carry a good deal. You first need to know how much it can safely tow. Then you need to understand the various elements of a travel trailer and how that applies to your half-ton’s capabilities. 

1. GVWR vs. UVW

If the total weight of your gear exceeds the GVWR of the travel trailer, you’re shaking your fist at a dangerous fate. It’s not enough to know what your truck can haul when you only compare it to the UVW. You need to compare it with the GVWR. 

UVW is the dry weight of the travel trailer, exactly what it weighs when it clears the last hurdle on the assembly line. 

GVWR is a weight limit you can’t safely exceed once all your gear is stored, accessories packed, and tanks are filled. It’s the more important weight when matched against your half-ton’s capabilities. In fact, you want to keep your total weight at 80% below the GVWR.

The longest travel trailer for 1/2-ton trucks on this list is nearly 35 feet. We wouldn’t have put it on the list if it were dangerous to tow with a half-ton truck. Just remember, when you’re getting into lengths that high, the small window between dry weight and your half-ton towing capacity becomes smaller and smaller.

If you love to cook, even when you’re on the road, this is the camper for you. The front kitchen is a really awesome diversion from the normal camper kitchen. You’ll enjoy tons of counter space and plenty of storage.

The bedroom has a spacious wardrobe and a queen bed. The extra large slide-out allows theater seating, a dinette, a couch, and a kitchen table.

Certainly, the highlight of this travel trailer is the storage. Besides the kitchen and bedroom, the outdoor storage options are outstanding.

11. Keystone Bullet 330BHS

We like the idea of a travel trailer that can hold many people but isn’t huge. The 23-foot Flagstaff Shamrock 235S hybrid travel trailer has plenty of room inside for the whole family but isn’t a beast to pull behind your pick-up.

This travel trailer under 6,000 pounds is light enough for ½ ton trucks and some larger SUVs. You’ll have plenty of seats and sleeping space while you travel.

Inside, the large slideout has a roomy dinette and a 60-inch convertible sofa (or theater seating). Each end of the camper is a fold-out soft shell queen size bed. To keep things cozy, this camper also has a gas fireplace.

What’s the Biggest Travel Trailer You Can Pull with a ½ Ton Truck?  

New truck owners often buy an RV only to discover that their truck can’t handle the load. Each truck model has a different towing capacity. The biggest travel trailer you can pull with a ½ ton truck depends on your particular truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

Half-ton towable is a classification you’ll see applied frequently to travel trailers. If you see a travel trailer that’s designated as half-ton towable, there’s a general assumption that a ½ ton truck is capable of towing that trailer.

However, this isn’t always the case. Even if the coach is “half-ton towable,” your pickup may not have the right components to handle the load. Before spending your hard-earned cash, know the actual GVWR for your truck. 

You’ll find the GVWR in your truck’s owner’s manual and on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb. American auto manufacturers use multiple engines, transmissions, and other parts in different variations of their trucks. So you have to know what your pickup can and can’t handle.

Can a ½ Ton Truck Pull 10,000 Pounds?

There are some truck models that come with trim options that beef up the transmission, suspension, and engine capacity of a ½ ton truck. These trucks are generally designated as “heavy-duty.” The ½ ton trucks with heavy-duty tow packages can pull a travel trailer that weighs over 12,000 pounds.

However, even with these upgraded features, 12,000 pounds is pretty close to the maximum GVWR for all half-ton trucks. A lighter towable trailer is preferable to protect your vehicle’s engine and extend the life of your truck’s life.

But when selecting a trailer, you need to carefully consider the payload and towing capacity of your half-ton truck.  

What Does Half-Ton Towable Mean?

Half-ton towable is a confusing term in reference to RVing. Half-ton traditionally refers to the payload capacity of the truck, meaning that it can generally carry about 1,000 pounds of cargo, passengers, and trailer tongue weight. A half-ton towable refers to trailers that can theoretically be towed by a half-ton vehicle. In real life, however, truck payload capacity varies greatly in this category, making the classification very misleading. Make sure to check your specific truck’s payload capacity as these classifications vary from make and model. 

What Is a Half-Ton Fifth Wheel?

A half-ton fifth wheel is a fifth wheel trailer that can be towed by the majority of half-ton trucks on the market. Pay careful attention to numbers when shopping in this category: Many fifth wheels that are classified as half-ton towables would max out the payload capacity of virtually every pickup truck in the half-ton class.

Important Features to Look for in Half-Ton Towable RVs

If you’re looking for a trailer to tow with a half-ton truck, consider the following:

Tongue Weight

It’s imperative that you include the tongue weight of the trailer, or the weight placed on the hitch, when calculating your payload capacity. We’ve listed each featured trailer’s hitch weight in the specs below.   

Since you can tow a decent-sized trailer with a half-ton towable, consider its length, especially if you’re looking to camp in national and state parks. You’ll need to add your rig’s length to your vehicle’s length to determine what size site you’ll need. According to the Camper Report , if you have a combined length of 35 feet, you’ll fit at 73 percent of all national park campgrounds.  

Also, many travel trailers are lightweight and can be towed by a range of vehicles, but remember that the longer your trailer is, the more susceptible it will be to crosswinds and other weather conditions. 

When shopping for a half-ton towable, you should pay attention to the trailer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) instead of the dry weight, or unloaded vehicle weight (UVW), since this number will need to be below—ideally, well below—your truck’s towing capacity.

Keystone’s award-winning Outback is an ideal option for those looking to match a toy hauler with their mid- or full-size pickup truck. While lengthy, the Outback’s GVWR comes in at 10,500 pounds, so you have more than 2,500 pounds of cargo capacity for your toys. This floor plan sleeps eight and has a separate main bedroom with plenty of storage and a king-sized bed. The garage area has flip-down bunk beds, and you’ll also find a sofa sleeper in the main area. Heartland North Trail 24 DBS

Small families will feel right at home in this half-ton towable. It sleeps seven to eight people and has a roomy back double bunk area that’s perfect for kids and a king-sized bedroom at the front of the rig, both of which can be closed off from the main living area. There’s a lot that comes standard with this rig, including solar, cable, and WiFi prep as well as power stabilizer jacks, a power tongue jack, and LED lighting with quick-charge USB ports.

Families will appreciate the double bunk area in the back, which also has a second entertainment center.  

Grand Design RV Transcend Xplor 265BH

This layout is perfect for grandparents that sometimes take their grandkids along. The double-sized bunks with step storage are located in the rear of the open-layout main area. There’s a U-shaped dinette and jackknife sofa to lounge on, a walk-in shower, and a queen-sized bed in the front of the rig. Owners note that even at nearly 33 feet long, this rig still tows like it’s under 30 feet.

You can replace the dinette with theater seating if desired.

nuCamp Cirrus 620

With a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds, this half-ton towable fifth wheel has a flexible layout. It comes in under 30 feet long, so it’s easily maneuverable and can fit at smaller campsites. Ideal for couples who tend to host guests, the front half of the rig is a suite with a queen-sized bed and lots of storage.

The back half of the rig houses the kitchen and living area, which has the option for theater seating in place of a tri-fold sofa or a booth dinette instead of a freestanding table and chairs. Cooks will love the walk-in pantry.

Venture RV Stratus SR261VBH

The floor plan sleeps four comfortably, with a true queen-sized bed and double bed over double bed bunk. There’s also a U-dinette that can be converted to more beds if needed.

Outside you’ll find a cooking station, shower, marine-grade speakers, and an 18-foot power awning, complete with LED lights. We love that this lightweight, 30-foot trailer can still comfortably fit a family.

If you’re looking to complete your outdoor kitchen, you can add on an option with a swing-away, bumper-mounted griddle. And for easy maneuvering, you can add on a backup camera.  

A Note on Rig Specs

It’s incredibly important to pay close attention to specs when shopping for a travel trailer. Use the VIN (vehicle identification number) to find the towing capacity and payload capacity for your specific tow vehicle.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): The maximum loaded weight of your trailer as determined by the manufacturer. You should never exceed this weight rating when your RV is stocked with all of your gear, propane, and fresh water. 

GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating): The maximum weight of both the vehicle and trailer, plus the passengers and cargo in both.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight): The weight of your trailer as manufactured with no cargo, propane, or water. This is often referred to as “dry weight.”

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity): This is the difference between your UVW and your GVWR, telling you how much weight you can safely add to your trailer. Pay close attention to the cargo carrying capacity if you intend to travel with a lot of gear. 

Tongue Weight: This is the amount of weight pressing down on the hitch ball that is attached to your tow vehicle. It is extremely important to make sure that the tongue weight of a travel trailer does not exceed your tow vehicle’s payload capacity.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

My 2017 Ram Big Horn has 1556 lbs bed and 10,606 towing. That’s according to putting my Vin in and with my options, (I’m the only owner). But Ram will tell you what your tow and payload specs are on their website. I have the Hemi and 8 speed, not the diesel.

Is the GVWR , with Ll the Grey, blak and Fresh water full ? I have hav a Nissan titan SV, with 9500 lbs towing capacity.. If A GVWR is 10, 350 can my truck tow it if tanks are empty ??
