'Dancing with the Stars' recap: Semifinals end with a shocking twist

VIDEO: 5 couples headed to 'Dancing With the Stars' finale

Things were heating up on the dance floor Tuesday night as the final five couples went head-to-head in the semifinals for " Dancing with the Stars " season 32.

This week saw each couple tackling two all-new dances -- one ballroom-style routine and one Latin-style routine -- as they all fought for a spot in the finale.

Amid the competition there was also a special performance by the professional dancers hitting the road for the DWTS LIVE 2024 Tour , set to Janelle MonĂĄe's "Make Me Feel" and choreographed by Mandy Moore.

There was no special guest judge this week, leaving Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough -- and viewers at home -- as the ones with all the power to determine who stayed and who would be eliminated.

Read on to see how the rest of the evening unfolded.

Who was eliminated

In a jaw-dropping conclusion, nobody was eliminated at the end of the night -- which means all five couples will move forward and compete in the finals.

"That's right. No one is going home tonight," Julianne Hough said after Alfonso Ribeiro revealed everyone had made it through. "For the first time ever, we'll see five couples dancing for the trophy."

Julianne Hough then noted that the judges' scores and votes by viewers will carry over to next week's scores to determine who will win the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

"Vanderpump Rules" star Ariana Madix -- who said she has an injury where her ribs connect to her spine -- reacted to the surprise non-elimination after the show, telling "GMA" it was "amazing but truly shocking."

"It's going to be amazing. I'm so excited to see everybody's dances," the reality star said. "Literally thought I was going to throw up just now."

"It feels really incredible to have made it to the finals. This has been a truly transformative experience -- not just physically, not just with dance, but mentally and emotionally as well," the reality star added.

Top score of the night

Marvel star Xochitl Gomez topped the leaderboard this week.

The "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" actress and pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy earned a perfect score of 60 for their two routines, a samba to "Samba" by Gloria Estefan -- which had Inaba calling Gomez "a star" -- and a waltz to "La Vie en Rose" by Lady Gaga -- which Derek Hough called "absolutely perfect."

Gomez reacted to making it to the finale when chatting with "GMA" after the show, with Chmerkovskiy looking ahead at the "bittersweet" realization that their journey together on "DWTS" is almost over.

Lowest score of the night

Actress Alyson Hannigan was sitting at the bottom of the leaderboard at the end of the night after a tough round of competition.

The "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum and pro partner Sasha Farber performed earned a score of 51 for their two routines, a jive to "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins -- which, despite a few errors, had Tonioli remarking on the "unbelievable" growth Hannigan has shown since she first danced on the show -- and a waltz to "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones , which Derek Hough called her "best dance."

Hannigan told "GMA" it felt "unbelievable" to make it to the finals. The "How I Met Your Mother" alum also recalled telling someone before the season began that the only way for her to make it to the finale was "for everyone else to drop out."

"And that didn't happen but I'm still here," she added. "Amazing!"

Who's left, and what were their total scores tonight?

Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy - 60 Charity Lawson and Artem Chigvintsev - 59 Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov - 58 Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach - 57 Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber - 51

"Dancing with the Stars" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+, streaming the next day on Hulu.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News and "Good Morning America."

A magical night in the ballroom awaits, on the first ever Disney+ night on Dancing With the Stars . Tonight the stars are performing numbers inspired by all that the streamer has to offer, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel and more. Take a trip to the mountains of Colombia with the pro dancers and troupe as they kick off the night with a group performance to "Colombia, Mi Encanto" from Encanto . And to celebrate Disney's upcoming 100th anniversary the troupe will also dance to "Try Everything" from Zootopia .

Last week while celebrating 60 years of James Bond , Wayne Brady , Charli D'Amelio, and Gabby Windey tied at the top of the leaderboard yet again with each couple receiving a 33 out of 40. Will anyone score higher this week and jump ahead of their competitors? Brady and D'Amelio are both performing Jazz routines, so we'll see whose dance impresses the judges more. And will Joseph Baena finally reunite with his partner Daniella Karagach after she's been absent for the last two weeks of competition due to COVID-19? The answer is yes! She's set to be back to perform with Baena and will also be performing a dance to "That's How You Know" from Enchanted with her husband, fellow pro Pasha Pashkov.

Some weeks the stars perform routines from just a few styles, like last week's episode which featured many sultry rumbas. But this week we have a true smorgasbord of styles, from Paso Doble to Charleston. Take a look below at all of the songs the couples will be performing to, along with their dance styles.

  • Fitness model Joseph Baena and partner Daniella Karagach will dance a Charleston to "A Star Is Born" from Hercules

'Dancing with the Stars' season 32 finale: Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy take home the Mirrorball

Season 32 of the reality dance competition show came to an end on Tuesday.

Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy are the winners of " Dancing With the Stars " season 32.

Gomez and Chmerkovskiy took home the coveted Len Goodman Mirrorball trophy in the season 32 finale Tuesday night, the first finale in "DWTS" history to feature five couples. Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach came in second.

This is Chmerkovskiy's third time winning the Mirrorball trophy. He previously won with actress and singer Rumer Willis in 2015 and gymnast Laurie Hernandez in 2016.

Before the winners were announced, Gomez, along with Ariana Madix, Jason Mraz, Charity Lawson and Alyson Hannigan, hit the dance floor a final time with a redemption dance and a freestyle dance with their pro partners.

Read on to see how the night unfolded:

Redemption Round

The redemption round saw the finalists performing a previous dance, which was chosen by one of the judges.

Hannigan kicked off the round with a fun salsa number to “Get On Your Feet” by Gloria Estefan. She initially performed the dance during the first week with her pro partner, Sasha Farber.

Ahead of the competition portion of the show, judge Carrie Ann Inaba said Hannigan’s strength was connecting with the audience when performing. Inaba remarked on Hannigan's strength and confidence after the dance and said the actress is a “different person” from the first week. Hannigan earned 25 out of 30 from the judges.

For Mraz and his dance partner, “DWTS” pro Daniella Karagach, judge Bruno Tonioli asked them to re-do their foxtrot to “Fly Me To The Moon” by Frank Sinatra. Tonioli said when Mraz first performed the ballroom dance, it was too “tight.” But after Mraz took the dance floor in the finale, performing the routine for the second time with Karagach, Tonioli said the late Len Goodman would “love it." Tonioli also noted it was reminiscent of an old Hollywood performance like those from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The number earned three 10s from the judges.

Judge Derek Hough wanted Madix to re-do the samba, which she performed during the second week, for her redemption dance. The “Vanderpump Rules” star took to the dance floor with her pro partner, Pasha Pashkov, and danced to “Spice Up Your Life” by Spice Girls. Madix and Pashkov earned a score of 29.

Before her performance, Madix’s dear friend and former “DWTS” contestant Lisa Vanderpump, from the hit reality television series “Vanderpump Rules,” said Madix “brought tears to my eyes” this season.

Lawson, who earned an average ballroom score of 8.5 this season, performed a tango with pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev to “Libertango” by Astor Piazzolla. After the pair's powerful performance, Hough called their routine the "best dance of the night so far." Tonioli added that it was “impeccably elegant.” The former "Bachelorette" and her pro earned a score of 29.

Gomez closed out the redemption round portion of the competition with a foxtrot to "Unconditionally" by Katy Perry alongside her pro partner, Val Chmerkovskiy. Gomez, who was consistently at the top of the leaderboard each week alongside fellow competitor Lawson, earned a score of 30.

Freestyle Round

The freestyle round began with a fun dance from Lawson and Chigvintsev to "Lose My Breath" by Destiny's Child and "Suéltate" by Sam i & Jarina De Marco featuring Anitta & BIA. The pair earned a score of 30.

For their last dance in the ballroom, Madix and Pashkov performed a freestyle to "Run The World (Girls)" by Beyoncé with "Level Up" by Ciara. The pair earned a 30.

Ahead of her performance, Madix noted the difficult year she has had and said that she is “glad to be ending the year on a positive note” with “Dancing with the Stars.”

“I’m sad it was the last one, I’m glad we ended with that one,” Madix told Pashkov about their time together on the show at the end of their performance.

Mraz performed a high-energy freestyle with Karagach to "Happy" by C2C featuring Derek Martin. The number also earned a 30 from the judges.

At the end of his performance, Mraz said that ending the season with that dance felt "incredible.” He added that he “loved dancing” with Karagach this season.

Hannigan’s freestyle with Farber was set to “Enchanted (Taylor's Version)" by Taylor Swift and "Papi" by Jennifer Lopez. The actress began with a dreamy dance to “Enchanted,” with several dance pros moving in unison with her and Farber before the music paused and the dance transitioned to high-energy choreography to “Papi.”

Tonioli praised Hannigan for the performance and said, “Honey, I celebrate you and what you brought to the show.” Hannigan also called her experience on the show “life-changing.” She and Farber earned a 28.

For their freestyle, Gomez and Chmerkovskiy danced to "Que Calor" by District 78. Tonioli, who called Gomez a “natural, charismatic performer” at the beginning of the episode, praised her "artistry' as a dancer. Hough also called her the most "charismatic dancer" this season. She and Chmerkovskiy earned a 30.

“Working creatively with Val on these dances has been so much fun,” Gomez said about her time with Chmerkovskiy this season. “Val has truly made me enjoy this experience to the fullest.”

All season 32 couples returned for a dance and more

The evening also included fun performances, including a Ray Leeper-choreographed opening dance number to “Young Hearts Run Free” by Candi Staton, which saw all season 32 couples returning to the ballroom.

At the very end of that performance, all five finalists descended into the ballroom on disco balls.

Additionally, season 31 mirrorball champs Charli D’Amelio and Mark Ballas returned to the ballroom for a routine to “Give it to Me Baby” by Rick James.

Co-hosts Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, and several past "DWTS" champs, including Hannah Brown, Rashad Jennings and Helio Castroneves, took to the dance floor as well for a dance to Mariah Carey’s “Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town,” which was choreographed by dance pros Britt Stewart and Alan Bersten.

And Mraz took the stage to perform his song, “I Feel Like Dancing.” He was joined by the dance pros of the “DWTS LIVE 2024 Tour,” who performed a routine choreographed by Mandy Moore.

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Celebrates ‘Disney100 Night’ on Oct. 17

Dancing With The Stars Disney Night

“Disney Night” is often a favorite among fans of “Dancing With The Stars,” and this year, that episode will become “Disney100 Night,” and will be dedicated to Disney’s 100th anniversary.

The Details

The pro dancers will start the show by performing an opening number to “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from “Encanto.”

It will be choreographed by Christopher Scott, with partner dances including Contemporary, Paso Doble, Jazz, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz or Waltz.

The 11 remaining couples will then celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary with performances to songs from beloved Disney film soundtracks.

As part of “Disney100 Night,” Hyundai is scheduled to debut the special IONIQ 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition , featuring unique Disney-inspired design elements and wheels. This commemorative vehicle is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between an auto manufacturer and Walt Disney Imagineering, and I think it looks really cool!

And that’s not all. Disney’s all-new movie “Wish,” along with “Dancing with the Stars” are making wishes come true with the “Wishes Come True Sweepstakes!” Fans can enter at WishTheMovie.com/DWTS (link will go live during the show) for a chance to win a trip for four to the “Dancing with the Stars” season 32 finale in Los Angeles. “ Wish ” arrives in theaters Nov. 22, 2023.

“Dancing with the Stars” is co-hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, with a panel of renowned ballroom experts judging, including Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough.

who song baby mine from the dumbo film?

trip dancing with the stars

Hi Rose! I didn’t see the episode, but there are actually two versions of “Baby Mine” on the live-action Dumbo soundtrack. Once is a stripped-down version by Sharon Rooney, and the other is a full band version by Arcade Fire. You can find both versions to listen to on this Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5G6xAVhoxcd65mmq3rMFOa?si=0eecfa8424644274

Dancing with the Stars Original Cast Members Confirm Return to the Show: ‘Let the Competition Begin'

Fans have been wondering which stars will be featured on Season 33 of Dancing With the Stars , but what about the pros, judges and hosts? See who's coming back for Season 33 of Dancing With the Stars below.

Dancing With the Stars  is ABC's reality TV dance competition series based on the United Kingdom's  Strictly Come Dancing . The series, which premiered in 2005, pairs celebrities with professional dancers. The couples then compete against each other for judges' points and audience votes. The pair with the lowest combined judges' points and audience votes is eliminated each week until only one champion remains. That couple is declared the winner and receives the coveted Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

Season 32 marked the first season without longtime judge Len Goodman, who retired in 2022 and passed away just five months later . The judging panel consisted of Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough, while Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough served as hosts. Artem Chigvintsev, Daniella Karagach, Emma Slater, Gleb Savchenko, Jenna Johnson, Pasha Pashkov, Peta Murgatroyd, Rylee Arnold and Val Chmerkovskiy, among others, all served as pros.

The show was officially renewed by ABC for its 33rd season in May 2024. Read on for everything we know about the Season 33 cast, including which pros, judges and hosts are returning.

Who's coming back for Dancing With the Stars Season 33?

Who's coming back for Dancing With the Stars Season 33? On May 10, our sister site Variety confirmed that DWTS had been renewed for Season 33. The outlet also reported that all three Season 32 judges would be returning, including original judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, as well as former pro-turned-judge Derek Hough. Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough will also be returning as hosts.

Derek celebrated the news on Instagram , writing alongside the show's announcement: "Let the competition begin đŸ•șđŸŒ." Tonioli previously confirmed his return in an April 2024 interview with The Sun .

"I'm still doing the American one and I'm very passionate about it," he said of the Strictly Come Dancing spin-off, noting that his new Britain's Got Talent gig won't affect his role on the show. Julianne's return was also spoiled, as her new talent agency confirmed her involvement to Deadline  back in March.

As for which pros will be returning, we unfortunately won't find out until the stars are announced just before the September 2024 premiere. The same goes for the pros themselves, who allegedly don't get asked back until the last week of August, as Gleb Savchenko revealed to The Sun . "We just sit and wait for the calls to be picked up, and hopefully, I'm back as a pro," he told the outlet. The pro dancer also teased that the show might be ushering in a new generation of dancers in the near future. "A friend of mine just said it to me yesterday, ‘The show will definitely, at some point, get a facelift,'" he said, adding: "And facelift, meaning it has to be updated with maybe dancers or whatever. But I'll tell you one thing, even though I'm 40 years old, I don't look like I'm 40."

So far, none of the Season 33 pros have indicated that they are leaving the show, but it isn't always their decision. In fact, some past pros have departed DWTS after they weren't asked back by ABC, including Lacey Schwimmer and Mirrorball-winner Sharna Burgess .

Episodes of Dancing With the Stars can be streamed on Disney+ .

Is Dancing With the Stars coming back in 2024 for season 33 ?

It's official, folks: we'll be heading back to the ballroom this year.

On May 10, fans of the hit competition series learned that ABC officially renewed Dancing With the Stars for season 33. What's more, the show confirmed the news by posting a joint Instagram with the network, stating that new episodes will air live simultaneously on ABC and Disney+ and on Hulu the next day.

"The Mirrorball will be shining bright when #DWTS returns with a new season LIVE on ABC and Disney+! Next day on Hulu. đŸȘ©," read the caption.

Naturally, seeing the news of a brand-new season sent Dancing With the Stars fans in a tizzy, rushing the comments to voice their excitement.

"This is so exciting đŸ˜đŸ˜đŸ”„đŸ”„," one person rejoiced in the comments. "Yess!! Yayy!! All the excitement đŸ˜đŸ„°," another declared. "Hell yeah!! Let’s gooooođŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ”„ already hyped to see who will be in the new cast I can’t wait!" a different person added.

Make sure you hit "save" at the top of this article to stay up-to-date on the latest news about Dancing With the Stars season 33.

As for when viewers can expect to tune in for a new season, we'll have to wait for ABC to give more official details on this. But as the last few seasons have debuted in late September 2023 , it's likely season 33 will follow a similar pattern and return to television sometime in early fall 2024.

Who will be the hosts and judges for Dancing With the Stars season 33?

After season 32 saw the surprise shake-up of former pro and judge Julianne Hough taking the place of Tyra Banks as co-host, it's likely fans will see Julianne return to season 33 and emcee alongside season 19 winner Alfonso Ribeiro .

In terms of who is set to judge, Carrie Ann Inaba , Bruno Tonioli and six-time DWTS champion Derek Hough will sit on the coveted panel once again. Carrie Ann and Derek each confirmed their returns on Instagram , posting the original ABC announcement on their profiles .

And if season 32 proves how much the show loves to throw curveballs, viewers can also anticipate to see guest judges sitting alongside them, depending on the theme of the week ( Good Morning America host Michael Strahan , Billy Porter and choreographer Mandy Moore , just to name a few, were on last season).

Fox will show a new side — or rather, all sides — of a group of male celebrities in an upcoming special.

The network has signed up Anthony Anderson , Taye Diggs , NFL All-Pro Chris Jones, Tyler Posey, Dancing With the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli and James Van Der Beek to take part in The Real Full Monty . The two-hour special, set to air in the fall, will raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research — and end with the troupe performing a striptease act.

“Don’t die of embarrassment. Get checked! That’s the message behind  The Real Full Monty  special,” said Anderson, who’s also an executive producer. “I am honored to lead the charge of rallying these fearless men to bare it all, in order to provoke, inspire and, in this case, beg you to get screened for cancer. That’s  our  goal…so what are  you  waiting for?”

Fox describes the special thus: “Anderson will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek as they train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, culminating with a big striptease dance, choreographed by Emmy Award winner Mandy Moore, where they will bare all in front of a live audience. Leading up to the final disrobing, the men will push their limits of comfortability, modesty and brotherhood with a series of rehearsals and experiences, both private and public, designed to build confidence and remove them far from their comfort zone and strengthen their bond as a group. Along the way, each of the celebrities will share their personal stories of how cancer has impacted their lives.”

U.K. production company Spun Gold TV, which is behind the British specials, is producing The Real Full Monty with Fox Alternative Entertainment. Anderson executive produces with Dan Norris, showrunner Ashley Edens and Spun Gold’s Nick Bullen and Daniela Neumann. Spun Gold is part of the 53 Degrees Global Group.

Inspired by the 1997 film “The Full Monty,” and based on “The Real Full Monty” unscripted format first broadcast on the U.K.’s ITV in 2017, the new special will feature celebs including Anderson, Taye Diggs (“All American”), NFL player Chris Jones, Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”), Bruno Tonioli (“Dancing with the Stars”) and James Van Der Beek (“Dawson’s Creek”).

Popular on Variety

In the special, is set to debut this fall on Fox, Anderson will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek as they train and rehearse for the performance, leading to a big strip-tease dance, choreographed by Mandy Moore (“So You Think You Can Dance”) in front of a live audience. Per the description, Leading up to the final disrobing, “the men will push their limits of comfortability, modesty and brotherhood with a series of rehearsals and experiences, both private and public, designed to build confidence and remove them far from their comfort zone and strengthen their bond as a group. Along the way, each of the celebrities will share their personal stories of how cancer has impacted their lives.”

“Don’t die of embarrassment. Get checked! That’s the message behind ‘The Real Full Monty’ special,” said Anderson in a statement. “I am honored to lead the charge of rallying these fearless men to bare it all, in order to provoke, inspire and in this case, beg you to get screened for cancer.”

Besides the UK, versions of “The Real Full Monty” have since been staged in Australia, France and the Netherlands.

Spun Gold TV (a 53 Degrees Global company) and Fox Alternative Entertainment are behind “The Real Full Monty,” which is executive produced by Anderson, Dan Norris and Ashley Edens, who is showrunner. Spun Gold EPs include Nick Bullen and Daniela Neumann.

Taylor Swift’s fans can’t calm down after she gave Travis Kelce a not-so-subtle shout-out during her Eras Tour show on Sunday.

The pop star seemingly referenced the Kansas City Chiefs player’s jersey number when she asked , “Can you believe this is our 87th show of the Eras tour?”

Audience members screamed at the mention, while X users celebrated online.

“I swear we are this close to having her say his name,” one social media user tweeted over the weekend, with another calling the moment “too perfect” since Kelce, 34, attended the concert.

He was caught on camera dancing with Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper .

Later in the evening, Swift, 34, performed “The Alchemy” off of her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” as one of her secret songs.
