Although both tracks lead to the summit, hiking along the one to the right offers a gradual but longer ascent with rewarding views. Once at the rugged summit, hikers marvel at the panoramic vistas of the lush Pisgah National Forest and the Linville River cutting deep through the Linville Gorge.

Whiteside Mountain Trail, Nantahala National Forest

The Whiteside Mountain Trail is one of the best North Carolina hikes that show off the state's beauty , leading adventurers to a summit with cliffs estimated to be around 390 - 460 million years old. Although short, this trail has a moderate difficulty rating due to its steepness and over 500-foot elevation gain. However, enduring the trail’s challenges comes with bragging rights of ascending one of North Carolina’s most iconic landmarks set along the Eastern Continental Divide.

The trail traverses the Nantahala National Forest while meandering through a cool hardwood forest with laurel and rhododendron vegetation. As hikers climb higher, they encounter several overlooks with railings, where they can stop for short breaks before reaching the summit rock outcropping. At the top, adventurers can soak in majestic views of the magnificent 750-foot-high cliffs, forests, and distant mountains.

There are 62 scenic byways in North Carolina. Some of Western North Carolina's most famous include the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Mitchell Scenic Drive.

There is another one closeby worth checking out: The Forest Heritage Scenic Byway starts in Brevard and leads drivers to scenic locations like Looking Glass Falls.

Forest Heritage Scenic Byway winds through about 64 miles of scenic WNC, passing through the Pisgah National Forest and intersecting the Blue Ridge Parkway and Waterfall Byway along the way.

Where is the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway?

A dedicated page on Scenicbyways.info states that the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway is 64 miles in length, a drive of around two hours. Beginning in Brevard and ending in Rosman, the road features areas perfect for recreation and scenic views including Sliding Rock, Pink Beds bog, several waterfalls and plenty more.

According to Romanticasheville.com, elevation of the byway ranges from around 2,100-5,340 feet.

Things to do on the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway

It would be easy to turn a two-hour drive of the byway into a weekend trip. Here are a few of the many options for enjoying the area:

• Hiking - With most of the byway winding through Pisgah National Forest, it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of hiking options available along the way. Enjoy waterfall hikes including Twin Falls and Moore Cove Falls , the unique bog environment of Pink Beds Loop and many more.
• Camping - Hoping to stay the night? Enjoy the river-adjacent Davidson Campground or former logging camp Sunburst Campground .
• Swimming - The byway also includes multiple swimming options, including the waterfall swimming hole at Looking Glass Falls and the famous naturally formed Sliding Rock.
• Picnicking - Enjoy picnicking and river access at Coontree Picnic Area , Sycamore Flats Picnic Shelter and plenty more directly along the byway's path through the forest.
• Culture & education - Driving the byway is also an excellent chance to learn about the area's rich natural and cultural history through institutions like the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and the Cradle of Forestry.

What is a scenic byway?

To be designated a National Scenic Byway by the US Department of Transportation, a byway must meet the criteria for at least one of the following six "intrinsic qualities":

• Archeological
• Recreational

The dedicated webpage says that these features contributing to the distinctive characteristics of the corridor’s intrinsic quality should be recognized throughout the region, and considered regionally significant. In other words, National Scenic Byways are known for having something for everyone.

We have changed our trip registration process to make it a little easier for everyone. We no longer require a paper registration form for our day trips. Registration for day trips are now available on RecLink .

Patrons are required to register for the Yearly Trip Registration for the respective year, prior to signing up for any of the Active Adult Program Trips. Once a patron is registered, future trip information will be sent as it becomes available.

Once the home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility in the southeast. November – Fayetteville, NC: Honor Our Veterans

Honor our soldiers with a visit to Fort Liberty (formally Fort Bragg.) The Read and Go trips are related to a book that was read and discussed within the Read and Go program. These trips are open to everyone however, individuals registered in the Read and Go program have the first opportunity to register.

Are you interested in going on a trip full of adventure, intrigue, love or sorrow without leaving the comforts of your chair? The Read and Watch program will center on reading a book that has been made into a movie. We will have a book discussion and then enjoy watching the movie!

Read and Go Trip – Indigo Field  

Embark on a captivating journey with author Marjorie Hudson.   Enjoy exploration, intrigue, and the rich tapestry of Southern life as we traverse the landscapes that inspired the pages of "Indio Fields." While reading the book beforehand is optional, it certainly enhances the experience.

Our adventure begins amidst the charm of Fearrington Village, where you can marvel at the endearing sight of fainting goats and belted cows. Fuel up with a cup of coffee and explore the quaint offerings at The Belted Cow or peruse the treasures at the local bookstore.

Next, we'll journey to Bynum, a historical cotton mill village steeped in rich heritage. Step back in time at the Bynum General Store, a cherished establishment dating back to 1936. Indulge in a delightful lunch at Virlie's, savoring the flavors of the South at your leisure, before meandering through the small shops that line the streets. Additional Information

Reservation Policy

Trip reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with payment and completed registration form. Note: Spaces are only reserved when a deposit/payment has been received.

Cancellation Policy

To withdraw from a trip, it must be submitted in writing via letter or email to the Active Adults Program Manager. All day trips follow the Raleigh Parks Refund Policy unless money is incurred by the department. Full or partial refunds are subject to non-refundable expenses incurred by the Department. Multi-Day trip withdrawals follow the tour operator’s cancellation policy.  Note: "No shows" for trips will receive no refund.

Payments/Deposits

Deposit and balance due dates for trips will be indicated on each trip itinerary. Registration can be made online thru RecLink , in person or mail in with check or credit card. One-day trips require full payment with reservation. No reservations are held without payment, and "early" registration is not allowed.

Transportation

Charter motor coach or a Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department bus or van. Type of vehicle will be noted on trip itineraries. Smoking/Vaping is not allowed on charter buses or Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources vehicles. Rest stops are made periodically during trips.

Departure Site

All trips will depart from the Anne Gordon Center for Active Adults, 1901 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh 27608, unless otherwise noted.  Cars may be parked here overnight.

We are unable to reserve seats on vehicles for special needs, such as motion sickness. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day of the trip. Seat rotation may be used on multi-day trips.

A full or part-time Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department employee escorts all trips.

Pope Francis May Visit United States in September After UN Invitation

The possible trip to the United States could change the Pope’s already-busy September travel schedule.

ROME — Pope Francis is reportedly considering returning to the United States in September to speak before the United Nations General Assembly.

The news was initially reported by the French Catholic newspaper La Croix and has not yet been officially confirmed by the Vatican. A source from the Vatican Secretariat of State, meanwhile, told CNA this week that “a formal invitation has arrived from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Pope Francis seems inclined to respond positively.”

If the New York trip occurs, the pope would visit the United Nations during its “Summit of the Future,” which the international body will convene from Sept. 22 to 23.

The possible trip to the United States could change the Pope’s already-busy September travel schedule. The Holy See Press Office has announced that Pope Francis will be in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore from Sept. 2-13.

Pope Francis is also expected at the end of September in Belgium, where he is scheduled to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the University of Louvain, which has been divided into two different linguistic entities since the 1960s. The Holy Father told Mexican television network Televisa last December that he intended to travel to Belgium in 2024.

According to a source familiar with the planning of papal trips, Pope Francis' trip to Louvain could be postponed to 2025. The postponement of the journey would leave room at the end of September for the visit to the United Nations.

During his planned stay in Belgium, Pope Francis will also celebrate Mass at the national shrine of Koelkenberg. There are also rumors that the pontiff will stop in Luxembourg, one of the small nations favored by the pope for trips to Europe. Luxembourg officials have denied the visit, but the Vatican Secretariat of State has indicated the trip is possible

The September summit's objective is to strengthen the structures of the United Nations and global “governance” to face more fully the “new and old challenges” of the coming years, the UN has said. 

The meeting will lead a “pact for the future” to advance rapidly toward realizing the UN’s “Sustainable Development Goals.”

In a meeting with students in April, Pope Francis described the summit as “an important event,” with the Holy Father urging students to help ensure the plan “becomes concrete and is implemented through processes and actions for change.”

Pope Francis, who is 87, has undergone two surgeries in the last four years and is under regular medical screening. A planned trip to Abu Dhabi to participate in the COP28 meeting was canceled last December due to health reasons. 

The Pope was last in the United States in 2015, during which he also appeared before the United Nations.
