Not only is getting around by bike very good for both you and the planet, it’s also one of the most thrilling ways to explore new places. And as it happens, some of the UK ’s most spectacular spots are best accessed on two wheels.

From canal paths and famous city landmarks to rural routes through isolated landscapes, remote villages and other natural wonders, the country’s cycle network allows you to reach all the nooks and crannies you’d never have a hope in getting to by car. Sure, you might work up a bit of a sweat every now and then, but that’s very much part of the fun.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or totally new to the bike game, we’ve got you covered. These are the eight best cycling routes in the UK.

Best cycle routes in the UK

1.  Berwick to Lindisfarne, Northumberland

Total distance: 23.7km

Difficulty: Moderate – there’s a r ange of surfaces, from tarmac to hard-packed gravel, that can be hard-going when wet.

A brilliant way to take in the wild scenery, ancient landmarks, golden beaches and tiny harbour towns of the Northumberland coast, this linear route links up two of the county’s most renowned locations. Starting at the historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, make sure you take time to explore the ancient town’s Elizabethan ramparts and charming Georgian architecture before heading from the train station over the Old Bridge to Spittal where you pick up the coastal path. Hugging the cliffside you’ll speed by brooding views over the North Sea before joining the road again to pass through remote villages Cheswick and Goswick. From here you’ll reach the Holy Island Causeway where you can cross over to Lindisfarne when the tide is out.

Highlights: Looking out across the causeway to see the magical silhouette of Lindisfarne Castle is truly breathtaking. 

2.  Torridon, Scotland

Total distance: 47km

Difficulty: Hard –  mountain bikes and overnight stops required.

Highland cattle, stone bothies and brooding mountains dotted with waterfalls: zoom past all this and more on this loop taking cyclists straight through the heart of the Scottish Highlands . Beginning and ending at Torridon village, a mixture of rocky paths and slick tarmac descents will take you past glistening lochs and remote wild swimming spots,  all in the shadow of three imposing mountain ranges . Some of the terrain is challenging, there are hard climbs up rough, rocky trails, but the loop ends in an easy, wind-whistling descent back to Torridon where the pub awaits.

Highlights: Annat Descent – a fast single track along a loch with sublime views.

3.  Bristol and Bath Railway Path, Somerset

Total distance: 21km

Difficulty: Easy – almost entirely flat.

Connecting two of the UK’s most exciting cities, this smooth route follows an old train line through the  Avon Valley’s serene countryside. Created 40 years ago by volunteers as part of a pioneering project to link the cities, t he three-metre-wide tarmac path starts in Bristol ’s historic port and winds through the countryside, taking you underneath  Staple Hill tunnel (stretching over 500 yards). Rest your legs at the signal box cafe in Warmley and see working steam engines at the old train station at Bitton. The trail runs right through into Bath ’s centre. Take in the pretty spa town before cycling back, or returning via train if your legs are weary.

Highlights: Look out for colourful sculptures along the route, including a larger-than-life brick fish and a stone giant.

4.  Westminster Bridge to Box Hill, London

Total distance: 42km (via Hampton Court Palace)

Difficulty: Hard – ‘Zig Zag Road’ was part of the 2012 Olympic road-cycling route.

Ditch the city for the verdant plains of Box Hill. Head out of London , past Hampton Court Palace and onwards into the green hills of Surrey . Box Hill’s ‘Zig Zag Road’ may be likened to peddling up the Alps, but it’s actually very doable. It climbs 120 metres, over a steady 1.6 miles, on a smooth tarmac road with amazing views.

Highlights:  The views from Box Hill – you’ll have earned them.

5.  Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, Yorkshire

Total distance: 209km

Difficultly: Hard – a multi-day trip for seasoned cyclists.

As proven by Tour de France’s visit to Yorkshire in 2014, the Dales makes fine cycling country and this circuit around the Yorkshire Dales National Park takes in the best of it. Starting and finishing in Skipton, the rural road route zooms up into the wilds of the Dales with some steep climbs up its undulating hills. You’ll be rewarded with epic views over famous geological sites like Malham Cove – a staggeringly tall limestone cliff – and Aysgarth Falls, plus man-made marvels like Bolton Abbey. Take the route at a leisurely pace over five or six days. You’ll pass through plenty of Dales villages packed with traditional pubs and B&Bs to rest your weary legs: Burnsall, Settle, Wensleydale, Kettlewell, Bolton Abbey and Grassington are particularly charming. All in all, it’s a test of your cycling skills with eye-popping views and glorious countryside along the way. 

Highlights: Stop for a pint at the Tan Hill Inn – the highest pub in Britain at 528 metres above sea level, and pause to take in the breathtaking views from the top of Low Sleights Road where the handsome arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct pop up among the rolling hills. 

6.  The Camel Trail, Cornwall

Total distance: 19.5km

Difficulty: Easy – a level, traffic-free trail for all abilities.

If you’re after a cycle route with sunny coastal views and stretches through wild Cornish countryside, plus plenty of seafood spots, quaint seaside villages and heritage sites along the way, this should be your go-to route. Running the length of a disused railway line, once the Atlantic Express Rail Route from London to the West country, this flat, smooth trail is perfect for cyclists of any ability. The first, and most popular, section begins at picture-perfect Padstow and runs along the banks of the Camel Estuary – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – to Wadebridge, taking in vast nature reserves and sea views. The second stretch is slightly more challenging, whizzing further inland to Bodmin (full of excellent pubs for a well-deserved break). If you’re feeling really adventurous carry on through to the quaint moorland village of Blisland right in the shadow of atmospheric Bodmin Moor. 

Highlights:  You can’t beat a sunny day cycling beside the mudflats and salt marshes of the  Camel Estuary. 

7.  Elan Valley Loop, Wales

Total distance: 29km

Difficulty: Hard – hills, hills and more hills. 

Known as the ‘ Welsh Lake District’, Elan Valley is the perfect backdrop for a long cycle ride with remote trails that wind through craggy hillsides, along Victorian railways and past serene reservoirs. Starting in Llangurig, a picturesque village just north of the market town of Rhayader , head on to the remote hamlets of Cwmystwyth and Hafod, before readying yourself for the climb up to Ffair-Rhos where you’ll see sweet panoramas of the Cambrian mountains. From there, it’s a swift descent around the sparkling Claerwen reservoir, past Victorian dams and back to Llangurig. 

Highlights:  The remote heights of  Ffair-Rhos and the dizzying descent to Claerwen reservoir. 

8.  Big Ben to Richmond Park loop, London

Total distance: 38km

Difficulty : Hard – expect steep climbs.

One of London’s most famous cycling spots, this rite-of-passage route starts on Cycle Superhighway 8 from Westminster to Wandsworth. Wind your way down the Thames, past Tate Britain and Battersea Power Station before joining up with the South Circular. From here, head down to the park and its 7.5-mile circuit. The clockwise route will have you huffing and puffing up the sharp climb of Broomfield Hill, while you’ll have the slightly flatter-but-longer Dark Hill to contend with if you opt for the anti-clockwise loop.

Highlights: Being able to drop that you’ve ‘done’ Richmond into conversations.

Continuing in our series of long-distance cycling routes articles, we’ve rounded up the best cycling routes in the UK and Ireland that you can tackle either on your road or gravel bike.

We want to show off some of the best long-distance routes these countries have to offer, some of which are multi-day, some on road and some off-road (but do-able on a gravel bike).

We hope this list inspires you to discover what’s on your doorstep – and that you don’t necessarily need to travel abroad to discover some fantastic riding!

Cycling routes in the UK

The following routes take in more than one country within the UK, and are some of the best long distance cycle rides the UK has to offer.

Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG)

• Distance: 1,913 kilometres
• Start/finish: Land’s End/John o’Groats, UK
• Surface: Road

Land’s End to John o’Groats, or, LEJOG, is one of the best cycling routes in the UK, and for good reason! The route runs from southern England to the northernmost tip of Scotland and completing it is a significant challenge for most riders.

There are many different road cycling routes available that take in some of the best long distance cycling in the country. You’ll find coastal vistas, hidden valleys and some of the finest places to cycle in the United Kingdom.

It’s a popular route and cyclists can choose between a self-supported trip or support from tour operators who will help with luggage, accommodation and other services too. The duration of the tours depends on your speed and selected package, but usually take between seven days to three weeks to complete.

It’s a challenging route, but an excellent way to see the best of Britain by bicycle. It’s the kind of route any self-respecting British cyclist has either done or is hoping to do – one of the best cycle routes the UK has to offer.

Coast and Castles route

• Distance: 321 kilometres
• Start/Finish: Newcastle, England and Edinburgh, Scotland
• Surface: Mainly asphalt

The Coast and Castles route is often recommended as one of the easier long-distance cycle rides in the UK, making it the perfect introduction to long-distance riding. It travels from Newcastle in England north to Edinburgh in Scotland, taking in quiet trails and historical landmarks.

In case you just want to ride part of the route, we’ve heard the section from Newcastle to Berwick-on-Tweed is particularly spectacular. This takes in unspoilt coastline and the ports of Alnmouth, Craster and Seahouses. You may even be able to cross the tidal causeway to Lindisfarne, the ancient monastic site, if you arrive at the right time. You’ll also come across the castles of Dunstanburgh, Warkworth and Bamburgh.

The route is suitable for all types of bikes including road bikes. Interestingly, it’s proved so popular that it’s now part of one of the best EuroVelo routes, the North Sea Cycle Route, or EuroVelo 12. As a result, it is well signposted, making it one of the most accessible cycling routes in the UK, never mind just those between Scotland and England.

Lon Cambria

• Distance: 180 kilometres
• Start/finish: Aberystwyth, Wales and Shrewsbury, England
• Surface: Mainly tarmac, some avoidable compact gravel sections

Beginning in the coastal town of Aberystwyth in Wales, the Lon Cambria is a long-distance cycle route that travels from mid-Wales to the border of England. At 180 kilometres it’s best done over a couple of days, particularly if you want to soak up the sights that this long-distance bike ride has to offer.

It’s suitable for both road and hybrid bikes, with most of the route on the road. Some small gravel sections can be avoided by taking minor diversions. As part of the Lôn Las Cymru, or National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 8, some sections are signposted but we’d recommend using a map or GPX for reassurance.

Cycling routes in Scotland

North coast 500 (nc500).

• Distance: 813 kilometres (or 516 miles)
• Start/finish: Inverness, Scotland

One of the best cycling routes in Scotland, the NC500, or North Coast 500, is the British equivalent to America’s Route 66. In this sense, it’s not just popular with cyclists but with drivers too. The route is very rural, so it isn’t usually heaving with vehicles – but it has got more popular recently, so do take care at busy times of the year.

The route begins and ends in Inverness, making it one of the most popular and best circular cycle routes in the UK. Initially, it heads west towards the coast, then follows it to John o’Groats before circling back to Inverness. Be prepared for some testing climbs on the route, with just under 10,000 metres of elevation gain across it.

Most people tackle the NC500 over a week, although the record for fastest completion is 27 hours 36 minutes (moving time). But, as it’s one of the best cycling routes in Britain, we’d recommend taking your time to absorb the gorgeous Scottish landscape and help your legs recover from all the climbing.

John Muir Way

• Distance: 215 kilometres
• Start/finish: Helensburgh and Dunbar
• Surface: Mixture of road and off-road

The John Muir Way is a popular long-distance walking and cycling route through Scotland. It begins in Helensburgh in central Scotland, and follows a scenic route to the coastal town, and birthplace of John Muir, Dunbar.

It’s fully waymarked as both a walking and cycling trail, so it’s easy to follow. Given that the route combines on and off-road sections, we’d recommend either a gravel or sturdy tourer bike to enjoy the journey. The journey can be split into multiple days, or done in one go if you’re brave enough!

It’s a great way to see lesser-known parts of Scotland and all the gorgeous vistas that the country brings. It’s one of the best bike trails in the UK, and if you split it, it’s arguably one of the better 2-day cycle routes the UK has to offer.

Cycling routes in Ireland

Kingfisher cycle trail.

• Distance: 500 kilometres
• Start/finish: Enniskillen and Scotshouse

The Kingfisher Cycle Trail was the first long-distance cycle route developed in Ireland. It’s split into six parts. You can dip in and out of these to build up to a 500-kilometre long route. It takes in quiet countryside, including rolling hills, lakes and rivers. It might not be the most popular, but we think it’s one of the best cycle routes in Ireland.

It’s suitable for road bikes but be aware that some of the roads are quite rough. You’ll find brown signs with a white kingfisher marking the route for much of the way. However, there are sections that are missing signposts, so download the maps to a device such as a cycling computer to make sure you stay on the right path. As many parts are rural, you might not have a phone signal, so it’s best to be prepared!

And speaking of being prepared, pack warm – with any of the long distance cycle routes in Ireland, expect rain to hamper you.

Mizen to Malin (MizMal)

• Distance: 1,050 kilometres
• Start/finish: Mizen Head to Malin Head, Ireland 

Ireland’s answer to LEJOG, MIZMAL takes the first three letters from the town at the start of this route (Mizen) and the first three letters from the town at the end of the route (Malin).

This enchanting route along the west Irish coast and takes in much of the  Wild Atlantic Way .

It’s not just one of the top long distance cycle routes of Ireland – it can be seen as among the best cycling routes in the world, thanks to its gorgeous Gaelic surroundings. Rugged coastlines, brooding Atlantic waves and blissfully quiet roads are prominent throughout this 1,050-kilometre ride. Cyclists also often comment on the warm welcomes received in the traditional villages they cycle through.

First mapped by an Irish rider a few years ago, it’s now one of the most prominent cycle routes in Ireland. Beginning in the southwestern town of Mizen, the route follows the Atlantic coastline to the north of Ireland, ending in Malin. It can be ridden unsupported or with the aid of a tour company that will provide the luggage transfer and accommodation.

It’s certainly one of the most scenic cycling routes on our world’s best cycle routes list, but just make sure you pack a raincoat. As we’ve already said, even in summer, the Emerald Isle’s weather can be somewhat unpredictable, so being prepared is your best protection against the elements.

Cycling routes in Wales

Dragon ride.

• Distance: 304km
• Start/Finish: Margam Park, Port Talbot (circular)

The Dragon Ride sportive is renowned for hosting some of the toughest cycling routes in the UK. The longest is the ‘Dragon Devil’ at 304km. It takes a circular route, beginning and ending at Margam Park in Port Talbot, with 4,351 metres of ascent for riders to tackle.

This long-distance cycling sportive is not for the faint-hearted, but those that do ride it are treated to some of the most spectacular views Wales has to offer. It’s suitable for road bikes and is signposted (but only on the day of the sportive). We’d recommend downloading the GPX file, just in case!

Without a doubt, it’s one of the best UK cycle routes if you’re up for the challenge.

Lon Las Cymru

• Distance: 400km
• Start/Finish: Cardiff Bay and Holyhead
• Surface: Mixed between road and gravel

Stunning mountains and challenging terrain earn the Lon Las Cymru its place on our list of the best cycle routes in the UK. Typically ridden from south to north, riders begin in Cardiff Bay and ride for 400-kilometres to Holyhead, through two national parks, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons.

The route is partially signposted as part of the National Cycle Route (NCN) Route 8, but we’d recommend downloading a map before you go. As part of the route is off-road, gravel or touring bikes with wide tyres are most suited to Lon Las Cymru. However, as with many of the best cycling routes, you can always adapt them to create your own journey. For example, if you want to ride a road bike, you can avoid certain off-road sections.

While the Dragon Ride is better known, if you want to try the best long distance cycling routes in the UK then make sure this is on your list.

Cycling routes in England

• Distance: 159 kilometres
• Start/Finish: Ilfracombe and Plymouth
• Surface: Mostly road but some unsealed

With plenty of traffic-free paths and flat sections, the Devon C2C is one of the best family cycling routes in England (albeit we’re probably talking families with teenagers rather than pre-schoolers!). Younger riders will enjoy the heights of the Gem Bridge crossing, while the route is also long enough to present a challenge to more experienced cyclists.

As part of the route is made up of former railway lines, there are sections of compact gravel, so we’d recommend taking either a touring or gravel bike for puncture protection. With stunning views of Devonshire and plenty of places to stop for refreshments, we think this earns the title of one of the best cycle routes in England.

North Norfolk Coast Cycleway

• Distance: 160km
• Start/Finish: King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth
• Surface: Tarmac

The North Norfolk Coast Cycleway is short enough to ride in a day, but long enough to be a challenge. It’s also pretty flat, so it would make a great first adventure if you’re looking for long distance cycle routes in the UK.

Suitable for road bikes, it takes in some quiet lanes in some of the most beautiful areas to cycle in England. You’ll ride through fields and marshes, past castles (including Sandringham Castle!), villages and beaches, making it a great way to explore the region of Norfolk.

The route is partially signposted, as part of the National Cycle Route (NCN) 1, Regional route 30, but do make sure you take your own maps or download a GPX route as occasionally signage does change on these long-distance bike rides in the UK. We’ve also heard that Sustrans is removing most waymarking from the NCN routes.

One of the best UK cycling routes in the UK, and the epitome of England biking, this trail captures everything in one manageable route.

Oxford to Cambridge

• Distance: 199 kilometres
• Start/Finish: Oxford and Cambridge
• Surface: Mostly road, sparse bridleways

Oxford and Cambridge are the UK’s two most famous universities and are also often regarded as two of the best places to cycle in England thanks to their cycle-friendly infrastructure. So why not ride between the two?!

Beginning at Oxford New Theatre, this route follows quiet lanes and the occasional bridleway along the adjoining countryside between the two cities. This rural ride gives you a quintessentially British experience with a wealth of historic churches, village greens, country pubs and village shops.

Road bikes are suitable for all but the bridleway sections, so a gravel bike may be a better bet.

We’ve included it as one of the best long-distance bicycle routes as it’s quiet, relatively flat, and can be enjoyed by families with older kids. It’s not all signposted, so we’d recommend downloading a route before setting off on your Oxbridge adventure.

Yorkshire Dales Cycleway

• Start/Finish: Skipton (circular)

Yorkshire cycling routes are well known for their steep hills and gorgeous moorlands, which is why we’ve included the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway as one of the best long-distance cycle routes in the UK. This fully signposted route is designed as a circular route of the national park, but it can be split into separate days if need be.

The route takes you along the Swale and Wharfe rivers, passing towns such as Grassington, Hawes, Kettlewell and Malham as well as the dramatic Settle-Carlisle railway viaduct.

The route is entirely on the road, although at some points, you may be wishing you had mountain bike gearing! With 4,320 metres of climbing, it’s not an easy feat, but the views make the hard work well worth it. Top of many lists for the best bike rides in the UK.

Sea to Sea (C2C)

• Distance: 220 kilometres
• Start/Finish: Whitehaven to Sunderland
• Surface: Mainly road, some off-road, but can be avoided by taking tarmac alternatives

One of the most well-known bike tour routes in the UK is the Sea to Sea (C2C). Highly regarded as a sort of bucket list ride for many amateur cyclists, C2C sees riders travel from one side of the country to the other. This C2C begins in Whitehaven and traverses east towards the Sunderland coastline.

It can be done either in one go or over multiple days, depending on how hard you want to ride. Road bikes can be used but there are some small diversions necessary to avoid off-road sections. These aren’t signposted, so it’s best to take your own map or GPS device.

It’s also worth knowing that as one of the best-known UK cycle routes, it comes with a particular tradition: riders dip the rear wheel in the Irish Sea at the beginning and the front wheel in the North Sea at the end. Make sure it’s only the wheels you’re dipping, unless you feel brave, as these are hardly warm waters!

Hadrian’s Cycle Way

• Distance: 278 kilometres
• Start/Finish: Ravenglass and South Shields
• Surface: Mostly tarmac, but some traffic-free routes are used with compact gravel

If history is your thing, Hadrian’s Cycle Way offers an alternative C2C route.

It takes you from Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast (in the Lake District National Park) and then follows the route of Hadrian’s Wall to South Shields on the east coast. The route starts in Ravenglass because it was the site of the Glannaventa Roman fort and finishes in South Shields at the Roman Arbeia Gatehouse. It takes in breathtaking coastlines and rugged Northumbria countryside, making it a cracker of a UK cycling route.

Known as National Cycle Route (NCN) 72, it’s partially signposted, particularly as you join part of the C2C route.

Road bikes should be fine for this journey as the route takes in quiet lanes and traffic-free cycle paths at every opportunity, but a gravel or hybrid would give you more options for exploring off-route. Bear in mind that you will need to take a short ferry ride across the Tyne to your final destination of South Shields, though it’s very regular and easy. A charming end to one of the best cycling routes in the UK.

King Alfred’s Way

• Distance: 350 kilometres
• Start/Finish: Winchester (circular)
• Surface: Off-road

One of the newest cycling routes in Britain is King Alfred’s Way. It’s an off-road circular route that begins and ends in Winchester. Recommended bikes are either gravel or mountain bikes.

Although the entire route is 350 kilometres, there are plenty of guides to help you split it into shorter segments so you can tackle one of the best long-distance bike routes at your own pace. Do note, however, that it’s not signposted, so it’s best to download your own maps beforehand.

Designed as an adventure cycling route, you can either choose to bikepack or stay in one of the many hotels and B&Bs on the route. It’s a perfect route for history buffs as it takes in a loop of the historic Wessex region. With plenty of architecture and monuments to whet your appetite. It’s swiftly becoming known as one of the best cycling routes in England.

6 Great Long-Distance Cycle Routes In The UK

A long-distance cycle route used to be about 100 miles. Yes, I hear you, that still is a long way, but for a growing number of cyclists nowadays it’s light work.

That’s because long-distance rides are becoming increasingly popular. Audax routes such as London-Edinburgh-London and Paris-Brest-Paris are receiving more and more applications each year.

It’s clear why: Multi-day rides offer a whole lot more than just a bike ride. There’s the sense of adventure, the personal challenge, and the variety of scenery (and weather) you’ll experience along the way.

Some cyclists choose to tour at a leisurely pace, staying at hotels or B&Bs, while on the other hand bikepacking is the new kid on the block.

Bikepacking involves taking a sleeping system (that means a tent, or sometimes just a bivvy bag), a stove, and just about everything else you need to survive with you strapped on your bike. You’ll see the sun-rise, often ride through the dark, and experience plenty of rain, but the pay-off is worth it.

So if you’re planning your next solo adventure, or trying to convince a group of friends to join you, we’ve got six of the greatest routes in the UK to get you started.

Do of course be aware to thoroughly research routes before attempting, and note that the mileage totals are estimates.

1. Sea to Sea (C2C)

The coast to coast is one of the UK’s most popular and well-worn long-distance routes.

Starting at the Cumbrian coast, the route crosses the Lake District, followed by the Pennines. The final stretch is on County Durham’s railway paths, winding towards the coast in Tyneside.

And if you wondered, C2C doesn’t actually stand for coast to coast, instead it’s just ‘sea’ said out loud. Despite this, it is known by many as the coast to coast route.

Distance: 136 miles, with 79 of those completely free from traffic Time required: 1 day

2. The North Coast 500

The  North Coast 500  is a relatively new route at just 5 years old, and was put together to showcase Scotland’s stunning northern Highlands. Yet in that short time it’s risen to the top of many global road trip lists, and there’s a reason why.

You start and finish at Inverness Castle, which has already exceptional views. From there, you’ll wind through the regions of Wester Ross, Sutherland, Caithness, Easter Ross and the Black Isle.

Expect plenty of climbing, inclement Scottish weather, midges, but most importantly exceptional scenery and the trip of a lifetime.

Distance: Just over 500 miles Time required: 1 week+

3. King Alfred’s Way

Just recently launched by Cycling UK, the King Alfred’s Way connects four of England’s existing national trails: the North Downs Way, South Downs Way, Ridgeway and Thames Path.

Certain sections along the way have been upgraded to accommodate cyclists, with the route using existing byways, bridleways and quiet country roads.

The route is largely off-road, and you’ll need more than a road bike. Many use mountain bikes, but this route is sure to be tackled by many gravel bikes with bikepacking set-ups.

Cycling UK have provided a full  GPX route  and plenty of information to follow online.

Distance: 220 miles Time required: Typically 2-3, or more days

4. Lôn Las Cymru

Wales is home to both Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, a must-see for any traveller. And it’s the Lôn Las Cymru that goes through both.

From Cardiff to Holyhead, you’ll travel through some of the most scenic parts of Wales. It’s not easy, with mountainous countryside meaning plenty of climbing, but this one is definitely worth your time.

Distance: 250 miles Time required: 4+ days

5. Great Western Way

The Great Western Way follows a route along the canals, rivers and vales from Bristol to London. Thanks to the canals it’s an almost pan-flat route, and therefore ideally suited for a more leisurely tour and entry level long-distance ride taking you to the heart of the capital.

The inspiration for the route is the engineering of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Accordingly, you’ll take in the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the historic SS Great Britain and beautiful Temple Meads station along the way.

Distance: 136 miles Time required: 12 hours

6. The West Country Way

Again starting in Bristol, the West Country Way travels to Cornwall, not London. The route takes in the Mendip Hills and Glastonbury, before taking you to the North Devon coast, and plunging into Exmoor National Park.

Next up is the Tarka Trail, a 30 mile section of traffic free disused railway lines. Finally, you’ll tackle the North Coast of Cornwall. With dramatic cliffs and breathtaking views, you’ll finally arrive in Padstow, a quaint fishing village famously known for its Rick Stein fish and chips.

The route is largely on public roads, but with traffic-free sections like the Tarka Trail, too.

Distance: 250 miles Time required: 5+ days

Extra route: 7. The West Kernow Way

This is a newly worked on route by Cycling UK that takes in some of Cornwall’s most beautiful and historic monuments, including the amazing Bronze age Mên-an-Tol, St. Michael’s Mount, and the Botallack tin mines.

It is largely off-road, meaning you’ll need at least a gravel bike, with a mountain bike offering even more comfort. Being Cornwall, it’s hilly too, with lot’s of sharp short climbs and barely any flat!

But some of these routes may contain sections that are not on the National Cycle Network and are better suited to more experienced cyclists.

Keep an eye out for the hexagon on our route pages. This symbol means that some or all of the route is not on the Network.

Sustrans and the Network

As custodians of the national cycle network, it's our role to care for it, improve it and champion a long-term vision for its future..

Sustrans only owns around 271 miles, or 2%, of the Network.

The rest belongs to various landowners, who are ultimately responsible for their own stretch. 

However, Sustrans staff and volunteers help these landowners to maintain, improve and develop their routes.

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. Additional parking information is available on Transportation Services’ event parking page .

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million. Denmark is a haven for cyclists of all abilities, with 11,000km of marked cycle routes to ride. From adventurous cycling on multi-day trips that take in the country’s most varied scenery, to day trips and wine tours, these are the country’s best bike routes for everyone, from hobbyists to expert-level athletes. To make it extra easy, accommodation options line the routes, including simple campsites and shelters , run by the Danish Nature Agency and offered for free or almost free, as well as B&Bs and hotels especially set up for cyclists, with bike rooms, e-bike charging stations and rooms made available for fixing your bike as you go. Aktiv Danmark has a list of bike-friendly accommodation and there is also a group of Danish Bike Hotels that have bike facilities. Bike rental is available in major cities and towns all over the country.

The Harbour Circle Start in Denmark’s capital with this 13km cycling route around the main harbour. It’s easy to fit into a short break, and takes in Copenhagen’s harbour swimming spots, waterside wine bars such as Rosforth & Rosforth , major attractions such as the colourful Nyhavn waterfront, and off-the-beaten-track treasures such as Cafe Slusen , where you can eat sardines from the tin and sip beer with a calm view of the entire harbour.

Bornholm by bike The sunny island of Bornholm has 230km of signposted cycle routes . Follow the dark green signs down quiet lanes to harbours awash with ice-cream shops, and past smokehouses where you can snack on just-smoked fish. Weave in and out of dappled patches of sunshine under the trees, watch out for hares and pheasants in the fields, and enjoy the quieter pace of life.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route Denmark’s longest cycle route – all 820km of it – encompasses islands and ferries, sheltered bays and seafaring ports as it traces the Baltic Sea coast. It breaks down into 14 stages, the pick of which are sections 10 and 11, which hug the coast. You’ll enjoy views of the islands of southern Funen and – if you’re lucky – the sight of porpoises.

The Rosnæs peninsula wineries Pop your bike on a train and travel roughly two and a half hours west of Copenhagen to find a winery route made for cyclists. On the Rosnæs peninsula, among the driest and sunniest spots in the country, vines grow, grapes are pressed and wine tours by bike are the thing to do. Starting at Stub Vingård , a 16km trail runs to Rosnæs Vingård through a green landscape carved by the last ice age, taking in the Barfod and Dyrehøj wineries along the way.

The Ancient Road This destination is more than a cycle route: it’s a path through Denmark’s history. Also called Hærvejen , it’s one of the most atmospheric trails in the country, taking in heathlands and rivers, along with key Danish historical sites. Discover the Viking Jelling stone and the 3,000-year-old burial site of the Egtved Girl. There are dolmen and further burial mounds on a route that has been used for centuries.

The West Coast Route Running from Skagen all the way down the west coast to Rudbøl, this route offers some of the best views of Denmark’s contrasting scenery. Mostly paved and always signposted, the route skirts the gloriously wild dune landscape of Thy National Park, golden-sand beaches and the bird-filled marshes of the Wadden Sea National Park on its 560km journey.

The Limfjord Route Another long route – this time 610km – the journey around the Limfjord in North Jutland is broken into stages and winds around the fjord from Aalborg, via ferries and bridges. There are plenty of restaurants along the way, giving you the chance to enjoy the region’s local oysters.

Berlin-Copenhagen Two lively cities with a sea between them and a shared love of cycling unite via this 630km route . The tour skirts the white cliffs of Møn and the flower-filled meadows of Falster on the way to the ferry to Germany.

The Fjord Path Half an hour west of Copenhagen, the journey around the Isefjord and Roskilde fjord begins. It’s rich with Viking history, and nature, running through forests and fields as well as on tarmacked roads. Look out for Thomas Dambo’s trolls on the way – there is a hidden one in a quarry nearby – and expect to spend a week or more exploring the full 275km route (or take it in sections). Bike hire is available in Roskilde.

The Border Route Cycle from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea while crisscrossing Denmark’s border with Germany and uncover a world of history along the way. The old marsh town of Højer in Denmark marks the start of the 130km route , with the finish line in Flensburg, Germany. It’s a wonderfully flat journey, with orchards and meadows alongside it. The land on both sides of the border has changed nationalities multiple times in the last few hundred years.

Cycling UK’s long-distance routes

Cycling UK’s long-distance routes can be done in sections or as one epic bikepacking adventure, as you prefer. Each of these long-distance off-road routes has a detailed route guide and lots of advice and tips to support your adventure.

1.  Rebellion Way

Length: 232 miles Level of ride: Regular Type of bike: Any

Follow in the chariot tracks of the trailblazing warrior queen Boudicca on this bikepacking trail around Norfolk.

Meandering along a mix of quiet, mostly flat back roads, byways, cycle paths and bridleways under huge panoramic skies, the 232-mile Rebellion Way is a fantastic introduction to multi-day, on- and off-road adventuring for anyone.

2.  Cantii Way

Length: 147 miles Level of ride: Regular Type of bike: Hybrid

Taking its name from the Celtic tribe which inhabited the area during the Iron Age, the Cantii Way combines quirky coastal towns and dramatic chalk cliffs with the rolling hills of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The circular route uses traffic-free cycle paths, bridleways and quiet roads, and is ideal for touring and hybrid bikes. It’s perfect for a leisurely trip, with lots to discover along the way – from remnants of military defences to vibrant art trails and vineyards.

3.   Great North Trail

Length: 825 miles Level of ride: Experienced Type of bike: Mountain bike

Explore the mixed landscapes of Scotland and northern England on this 800-mile route: from rolling hills and dales to remote windswept moorland, crumbling castles to hidden waterfalls, swooping singletrack and old Roman roads, and everything in between. 

4.  King Alfred’s Way

Length: 220 miles Level of ride: Experienced Type of bike: Mountain or gravel bike

Immerse yourself in 10,000 years of history by riding this 350km loop around historic Wessex, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Alfred the Great. Designed by Cycling UK in 2020 King Alfred’s Way forms a crucial part of our goal to create a network of long-distance off-road routes across the length and breadth of Great Britain, through fascinating places and inspiring landscapes.

5.  West Kernow Way

Length: 147.50 miles Level of ride: Experienced Type of bike: Mountain or gravel bike

The West Kernow Way takes in many of the highlights of the western half of the Cornish peninsula, including the Botallack tin mines, the Bronze Age monument Mên-an-Tol, Land’s End, St Michael’s Mount and Lizard Point.

Expect spectacular coastal scenery, hedgerows bursting with wildflowers and ancient tracks across isolated moorland. There’s no denying it will be a challenge, with more than 4,200m of climbing – but all that exertion provides a worthy excuse to sample the excellent Cornish cuisine. 

Developed by Cycling UK, the West Kernow Way forms part of the European Regional Development Fund EXPERIENCE project. As part of the project, Cycling UK will also be supporting hospitality businesses along the route to become accredited Cycle Friendly Places, so you know you will be greeted with a warm welcome and everything you need.

EXPERIENCE routes

Cycling is a fantastic way to explore new places and connect intimately with the landscapes, history and culture of a region – not to mention fuelling up on local delicacies.

Cycling UK is one of 14 partners working on the EXPERIENCE project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, which aims to develop experiential tourism activities in six regions across England and France. ;Discover new cycle hub locations across Norfolk, Kent and Cornwall, where you can stay at accredited Cycle Friendly Places and explore our promoted routes linking up the fascinating stories of each area.

6.   Norfolk

Often overlooked as a choice for a cycling trip, once you start exploring, this big-sky county is full of surprises. Tranquil lanes, quaint villages, peaceful wildlife havens and buckets of quirky charm, from prehistoric mammoths to steam railways. You’ll find medieval churches, gently rolling hills and tranquil track paths through woods.

Cycling UK has mapped out 18 unique rides based around six cycle-friendly hubs:

• Cromer is the perfect example of a traditional English seaside resort and thoroughly deserves its ‘Gem of the Norfolk coast’ tag
• Diss sits on the Suffolk border in a rich farming and forest landscape well away from the busier broads and north coast
• Fakenham is a pretty market town on the river Wensum with roots going deep into the past of the rich agricultural area near the north coast of Norfolk
• Hunstanton , a resort blessed with beautiful beaches where you can watch spectacular sunsets melt into the Wash
• Swaffham , a pretty market town with a centre full of beautiful Georgian houses and shop fronts, with pubs, old coaching inns and coffee houses
• Wroxham and Hoveton , also know as the ‘capital of the Broads’, has a medieval heart that has flourished as a boaters’ paradise with a real ‘seaside’ vibe

7.  Kent

The south-east corner of England might seem like a busy place, but it’s easy to escape the crowds and discover this green and pleasant land by bike. The ‘Garden of England’ is densely packed with trails, quiet lanes, big-ticket sightseeing, quirky coastal towns, salubrious towns and villages, and curious one-offs.

Whether you fancy an invigorating ride along the cycle paths linking colourful seaside towns, or prefer to head inland and explore the rolling green countryside of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there’s lots to discover. Explore the eight routes based around Cycling UK’s three cycle-friendly hubs.

• Canterbury , home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites, the city has great facilities for visitors, and with lovely riding in all directions it makes a wonderful place to visit and explore by bike
• Dover , one of Britain’s best-known south coast ports, Dover stands proudly between its famous white cliffs. Our three routes use ancient pilgrim routes and byways, Roman roads and new cycle paths to visit the numerous historic sights, castles and world war memorials
• Wye , this medieval village is a great base from which to explore the surrounding countryside and the rich history of the area. Our three routes provide a range of riding and experiences to suit leisure riders, explorers and off-road enthusiasts alike

8.  Cornwall

With stunning scenery, unique subtropical vegetation, fantastic seafood and vibrant arts communities, Cornwall is a wonderful place to explore by bike. Escape the tourist hotspots and seek out the back lanes, mining tracks and disused railway lines to join the dots between the many fascinating places that reveal the history and culture of the region.

Yes, Cornwall’s hills can be challenging, but with so much interest and beauty packed into a relatively small area, you don’t need to go far to have an incredible experience. Amazing foodie stops as well as traditional pasties and cream teas to help keep you going are never far away either.

• Helston , a historic town is the centre of a fantastically varied and beautiful local riding landscape. It’s also the gateway to the breathtaking cycling of the Lizard Peninsula
• Penzance and Marazion , the largest town in west Cornwall with loads of places to eat, stay and visit, historic Penzance is a fantastic base for exploring the incredible scenery and sights of the south west tip of England by bike

9.  British Cycle Quest

By taking part in Cycling UK’s unique cycling challenge you can discover new places all over Britain. Checkpoints are scattered throughout England, Wales and Scotland including many islands. Wherever you are, you’ll most likely find one or two checkpoints within cycling range.

It is all about getting outside and cycling to find as many points of interest across the whole of Britain as you can. Once you find a checkpoint, all you need to do is answer the corresponding question to prove you've been there.

You can also receive BCQ certificates and buy medals for collecting clues. You’ll gain your first certificate when you’ve visited 10 sites. When you’ve visited all 402 sites, we’ll present you with an engraved medal.

10.   Cathedrals cycle route challenge

Long-distance cycle routes in the UK have become hugely popular in recent years and it doesn’t come much longer than this one: the Cathedrals Cycle Route (CCR), stretching almost 2,000 miles across England’s landscape.

The full route is 1,825 miles, but it has been broken down into 42 sections, between each of the cathedrals. The legs are all of differing terrain, difficulty and lengths – ranging from just 1 mile to more than 100! – so there’s something for everyone.

11.  Land’s End to John o’ Groats

Length: 971 miles Level of ride: Experienced Type of bike: Road bike

Cycling UK has been helping cyclists ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats (LEJOG) for more than a century. This iconic route – which wends its way across the entire length of the UK – is a challenge that many thousands of people take on each year. Whether you’re looking for a scenic, leisurely route or want to finish the route as quickly as possible , Cycling UK has all the support you need.

12.  Cape Wrath

Length: 23.8 miles Level of ride: Beginner Type of bike: Any, though mountain bike preferable

For 70 years, Cycling UK’s Cape Wrath Fellowship has put cyclists to the test. Located in Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland, Cape Wrath is the most north-western point of the UK. This rugged, windswept headland is renowned for its natural beauty and challenging coastal path.

There are six ‘official’ Sustrans coast-to-coast routes across northern England, each taking three to four days to complete. Coast-to-coast veteran Rob Ainsley has put together the ultimate guide on these adventures.

14.  North Downs Way

Length: 150 miles Level of ride: Regular Type of bike: Mountain or gravel bike

The riders’ route for the North Downs Way stretches for 153 miles through the Surrey Hills and Kent Downs, from Farnham in Surrey to Dover on the Kent coast. It takes in beautiful rolling hills and woodlands, castles and cathedrals, vineyards and breweries. The trail also travels along part of the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route.

Cycling UK has almost 20 different routes perfect for a weekend ride. From a gentle cycle around Birmingham perfect for beginners to one of the hardest and best-known sportives in Britain, the Fred Whitton challenge. Explore them all.

17.  Cateran Country

Length: 86 miles Level of ride: Beginner Type of bike: Road bike

Stretching from the Valley of Strathmore to the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, the Cateran Ecomuseum is one of Scotland’s lesser travelled destinations. It has quiet roads and beautiful scenery.

18.   New Forest

Length: 23 miles Level of ride: Beginner Type of bike: Mountain bike

William the Conqueror named his former hunting ground Nova Foresta. Today verderers and commoners continue historic grazing practices that maintain the forest’s semi-open landscape – expect wandering animals. This ride incorporates heathland, railway path, village tea stops, fords, beautiful forest trails, meadows and picturesque country lanes.

Routes and Roots is one of 29 projects supported by The Community Heritage Fund, which The National Lottery Heritage Fund is delivering on behalf of the Department for Communities to help people in Northern Ireland to connect with their local heritage.

Cycling is a fantastic way to get to know a place, and the Routes and Roots project will take residents and visitors alike on a journey of discovery, linking well-known landmarks such as the Harland and Wolff cranes and Titanic museum, as well as a host of hidden gems.

Cycling UK is partnering with local community organisations Eastside Partnership, the Maritime Trust and Sailortown Regeneration to capture stories of everyday life in the city from past to present.

20.  Tales of the Trails

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Cycling UK’s Tales of the Trails celebrates the heritage of the communities in Ynysybwl and Clydach Vale while inspiring residents and visitors to explore their local area.

Wales’s valleys and the mining communities which sprung up in them are a proud part of our past which deserve to be remembered.

The project has worked with Ynysybwl Regeneration Partnership and the Cambrian Village Trust to capture the stories of residents and bring them to life with cycle trails which take people into the landscape where they happened.

21.   central london to windsor.

Length: 62 miles Level of ride: Regular cyclist Type of bike: Road bike

Legendary London bike shop Condor Cycles takes us on a spin out west to Windsor and back. From Condor’s central London location you can head north, east, south or west. This route goes out to the west through two Royal Parks to Windsor, before a slightly shorter run back to London, passing several large reservoirs.

22.   Edinburgh family route

Length: 4 miles Level of ride: Beginner cyclist Type of bike: Any

This family ride is from the Meadows in central Edinburgh out to Dr Neil’s Garden in nearby Duddingston. The route is ideal for families who have learned to pedal and built up a bit of confidence, and are now looking for a longer route. It’s a perfect Sunday pedal, as it uses the road through Holyrood Park which is closed to traffic on Sundays 8.30am-5.30pm.

23.   Cardiff heritage loop

Length: 46.4 miles Level of ride: Regular cyclist Type of bike: Road bike

This route in Cardiff is packed with historic and natural interest. Originally created by Cardiff CTC’s Clive Cazeaux, the ride starts at the National Museum Cardiff and takes in the Newport Transporter Bridge, Newport Wetlands nature reserve, along Roman roads and quiet lanes before climbing Penylan Hill opens up amazing views over the Severn Estuary.

In 2018 Cycling UK collected more than 140 unique cycling routes across the UK from people who have strong connections with the organisation. Since then we have added more and there are now over 200.

There are cycling rides to suit all-abilities from well-known cyclists, cycling brands, cycling magazines, cycling groups, community clubs, cycling development projects and Cycling UK staff. Every route has an interactive map and GPX file, and we hope it inspires you to go on an amazing cycle ride.

Ride Around Clark County: Annual bike outing returns with four updated routes

Rides offer rest stops, refreshments and help if there are mechanical issues.

Living and driving in Clark County may lead you to think you’ve seen the place. But have you ever taken a self-propelled tour of the local landscape on two wheels, not four?

The Vancouver Bicycle Club ’s annual Ride Around Clark County event, set this year for July 27, is your opportunity to admire sweet scenery, enjoy lavish spreads of snacks and get the workout of your own choosing.

“During the pandemic, many people were introduced to indoor (stationary) cycling, and that’s great, but I personally feel there’s no substitute for the fresh air and sunshine of an outdoor ride,” said Mike Detlef, a Vancouver Bicycle Club board member.

Ride Around Clark County is a fully supported bike outing. Routes are mapped out and easy to follow. Volunteers sweep the routes (in cars, not on bikes) to make sure everyone is OK. If you do get into mechanical trouble, help is just a phone call away. Rest stops and refreshments are plentiful, including sandwich bar and one beer or soft drink when you’re done (included with registration).

VANCOUVER’S BIKE SCENE

Learn about Vancouver Bicycle Club training opportunities, weekly rides and special events like the Ride Around Clark County at vbc-usa.com online.

Learn about the nonprofit, co-op Bike Clark County shop and its youth courses in basic bike maintenance as well as “bike leadership” skills (citizenship, mentoring, first aid) at bikeclarkcounty.org online.

To pay for all that, registration starts at $35 (for shorter routes) and goes as high as $70. Whatever revenues are left over are donated to Bike Clark County, a nonprofit, cooperative bike shop in downtown Vancouver.

The event has long offered four different routes for cyclists of different abilities, from short and flat to long and hilly. This year all routes have been updated. They begin and end at the Bike Clark County shop at 1604 Main St., Vancouver.

River Run (18 miles round-trip; 234 feet elevation): For bike newbies, dabblers and families with kids, there’s the flat out-and-back to Frenchman’s Bar Regional Park. This route passes through the Fruit Valley neighborhood and stops in at the seldom-visited Vancouver Lake Wildlife Area at the end of Laframbois Road. Then it U-turns, connects with Lower River Road and continues out to the Columbia River. On a clear day you’ll see mountains and ships.

Town and Country (34 miles round-trip; 657 feet elevation): Cyclists up for more distance and challenge can add a second leg — and a tiny taste of Scotland — to the River Run. After returning to base (and snacking) at Bike Clark County downtown, continue eastward along the central Vancouver streets that local bike commuters fondly call the “Scottish Highway”: McLoughlin to MacArthur to McGillivray. You’ll turn around in Cascade Park and head back downtown. While mostly flat, this route also demands a bit of climbing but rewards you with a bit of coasting.

Metric Plus (66 miles round-trip; 2,781 feet elevation): Ready for rural scenery, big hills and a whole new approach? This huge, clockwise loop heads north out of downtown Vancouver through Felida, Salmon Creek and rural Sara before veering east toward Battle Ground. After that, the loop zigzags southeast through the countryside, passing between Green Mountain and Camp Bonneville and rounding the southern tip of Lacamas Lake before heading back to base.

Century Plus (104 miles round-trip; 5,571 feet elevation): Even huger and steeper, this follows the Metric Plus route but adds an additional loop that veers north from Battle Ground all the way to the Cedar Creek Grist Mill in north Clark County. The elevations on this route will test you for sure. The mountain and forest scenery will reward you aplenty.

“People don’t realize how pretty it is up there,” Detlef said.

Stay right for safety

After running counterclockwise around the county for many years, Detlef said, the direction of the two longest routes — the Metric Plus and the Century Plus — was changed this year to clockwise. Detlef said that’s a subtle difference with an important reason: safety.

Cyclists tend to stay to the right but riding a counterclockwise route around the county forces them to make repeated left turns and cross oncoming lanes of traffic. But riding clockwise means fewer lefts and many more easy right turns from the right lane. That’s less complicated and less risky, Detlef said.

“We ended up with more right-hand turns, and we feel that’s safer,” Detlef said.

If you’re tempted by the Ride Around Clark County but not sure you’ve got the skills or the oomph, consider signing up for a training ride series or a beginner bike-safety session. The Vancouver Bicycle Club is offering both this spring.

A series of weekly route training rides will begin in May and run through June, Detlef said. Guided by ride leaders, groups of cyclists will attack the Ride Around Clark County routes of their own choosing, gradually adding distances over the weeks. Visit the club website to learn more.

For newer or returning riders who want a beginner-level introduction or reintroduction to the basics of street riding, the club will offer its annual Road Cycling 101 series from May 15 through July 17. These are weekly outings that start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays with safety topics like basic bike mechanics and rules of the road. After that, cyclists will hit the street for a few miles, escorted by a Bicycle Club instructor and assistant.

Concerns about cyclist safety are nothing new. They’re why the Vancouver Bicycle Club was first formed over 50 years ago, Detlef said.

“Not everyone is comfortable riding along our city and county roads, with good reason,” he said. “We’ve developed hundreds of routes that the club deems safe. They’re quieter roads that avoid dangerous intersections. The club leads rides on those routes at various skill levels.”

Detlef himself leads a weekly ride (from midtown Vancouver to Salmon Creek and back) that’s nicknamed “The Earthquake” for no real reason except historical cycling legend, he said. In the 1980s, a group of cyclists returned from this route to discover that their stationary peers had felt an earthquake. Out on the road, the cyclists had felt nothing.

Detlef leads his Earthquake outings at a pretty brisk pace, he said (18 to 20 mph for 32 miles, round-trip). For those who want an easier, shorter version, there’s also a “Mini-Quake” (12 to 14 mph for 22 miles) led by a different club volunteer.

That’s just a sampler of the many group rides available every week.

While the Vancouver Bicycle Club is open to everyone, Detlef confessed that it’s mostly populated by retired folks who are just as eager to socialize as they are to pedal. He said he’s a good example, having been an avid rider most of his life but a club member only for the past couple of years.

“Post COVID, I think people are so appreciative of the human interaction,” he said. “I have as much fun after the ride, talking over coffee, as I do out on the road. It’s a social club as much as a cycling club.”
