Covered Bridges in Marysville and Union County
Big Darby Creek Covered Bridge
Bigelow Covered Bridge (1873) Named for Eliphas Bigelow, whose family founded Plain City, this 102-foot-long bridge underwent extensive renovation in 1990, including a new arch system to carry the weight of traffic across Little Darby Creek.
Buck Run Covered Bridge (2006) The longest single-span wooden bridge in Ohio, this is the third bridge to be built on this site. The first was a covered bridge; the second a steel truss bridge. Now, this modern two-lane covered bridge crosses the Big Darby Creek and is 160 feet long.
Culbertson Covered Bridge (1868) Originally located on State Route 4, the Cuthbertson Bridge was moved to this spot prior to 1922. In 1977, a runaround was constructed so farm equipment and other heavy vehicles can bypass the bridge. With an original price tag of $1,375, this 94-foot-long bridge spans the Treacle Creek.
North Lewisburg Covered Bridge (2006) This bridge replaced the historic Pottersburg Bridge, which was moved to make room for a new bridge with modified Pratt truss with substructures built out of the creek at a cost of $1.6 million. Spanning the Big Darby Creek, this bridge is 135 feet long.
Pottersburg Covered Bridge (1868) Replaced when its vintage one-lane bridge could no longer handle increasing traffic when Honda built their North American Headquarters in Marysville, Pottersburg Bridge is now available for special events and is part of a 1.9-mile paved multi-purpose Rails-to-Trails path spanning the old rail bed at 94 feet long.
Spain Creek Covered Bridge (1870s). This quaint bridge is one of Union County’s smallest, housing a “bridge-within-a-bridge” concept that allows the covered bridge to rest, while the bridge inside carries the weight of the traffic. This bridge has been rehabilitated after heavy machinery damaged the overhead braces in 2008 and 2016. This bridge spans Spain Creek and is 64 feet long.
Streng Road Bridge (1914). Built to replace the covered bridge that was destroyed in the great 1913 flood, Union County received special recognition in 1993 for renovating this beauty. Its original ornamentation and decorative are elements all still in place. This 200-footer crosses Big Darby Creek. It’s the only non-covered bridge to be listed on the official Ohio Historic Bridge registry.
Thompson Road Covered Bridge (2010). Originally built in 1881, the first covered bridge built on this location was destroyed by a devastating flood in 1913. This beautiful modern-day bridge is much different from its predecessor in that it has two lanes and can carry today’s heavy traffic loads 125 feet across Mill Creek.

- Union County Covered Bridges
One of the best known bridge builders in Central Ohio was Reuben Partridge . Reuben was responsible for more than 100 covered bridges during his long career. Today there are only a few of his bridges remaining.
Union County Covered Bridges all have windows along the side. At the time the original covered bridges were built, traffic was either pedestrian or by horse. There are several reasons for not having windows built on these bridges, some even suggest that the windows might have startled a horse passing over the bridge. More than likely however, is the fact that the openings would cost more to build, provide a direct opening for inclement weather.
The reason for the bridges being covered is to protect the wood. The other answer is that the builders constructing the bridges often had little education, especially in the engineering technology. They did have plenty of house building experience. They understood what it took to construct walls tied together with ceiling joists and rafters, all together combined to create a stable structure that would stand up to harsh winds, snowy weather and rain.
It was the responsibility of the nearest farmer to make sure the bridge was in good shape and free of snow and ice. That is why many of the bridges bear the name of a local farmer. The reason the bridges were made of wood instead of iron, steel or concrete, is because quality wood was plentiful and easy to use. Iron and steel had to be fabricated to exact sizes and then transported from the foundry to the bridge location; much easier to just build the structure out of wood.
POTTERSBURG BRIDGE
The Pottersburg Bridge is now part of a multi-use trail and not used for vehicular traffic. It was originally located where the North Lewisburg Road Covered Bridge now stands. This historic bridge was designed and built by Reuben Partridge in 1868. The windows were added back 1937. The bridge was moved in 2006 and painted red in 2007. The bridge is used throughout the year for special events, especially the annual Covered Bridge Festival where the bridge is converted to an open air diner.
CULBERTSON BRIDGE (Winget Road Bridge)
Built in 1868 by Reuben Partridge, the 94' bridge now spans the Treacle Creek. The bridge was originally located on SR 4 and moved in the early 1950s. In 1961 the bridge underwent extensive repairs and reconstruction. Because the road saw an increase in heavy farm equipment, rather than move the bridge again, a new road was constructed around the bridge so heavy equipment could bypass the bridge. In the 1980s the bridge was rehabilitated again, this time glue laminate beams were added for increased strength. It is rumored that the bridge may be haunted by some lost lover long-ago.
BUCK RUN ROAD BRIDGE
Built in 2006, it replaced a bridge built back in 1914. The large, modern 2-land bridge spans 160' over the Big Darby Creek.
SPAIN CREEK BRIDGE (also known as the Inskeep-Cratty Road Bridge)
The Spain Creek Bridge was built in the 1870s. and spans 64'. It was built by Reuben Partridge. It is the smallest of all the surviving bridges. In 1988 the bridge was completely renovated and again 2008 repairs were made to the bridge. The windows were added later.
NORTH LEWISBURG ROAD COVERED BRIDGE
Built in 2006, the North Lewisburg Road Bridge is 135' long and is 2 lanes wide. It is constructed using a modified Pratt Truss. The bridge spans the Big Darby Creek.
Union County Covered Bridge Festival
The Union County Covered Bridge Festival is quickly becoming a regional favorite. In early September visitors have the opportunity to tour Union County's historic covered bridges and learn more about their history throughout Union County. Noted as a celebration of local heritage, the Union County Covered Bridge Festival is marked with various activities in Marysville, Milford Center, North Lewisburg, Plain City and Unionville Center.

Visiting the Covered Bridges of Union County, Pennsylvania
Union County might be one of the smallest counties in Pennsylvania, but it is home to five great covered bridges.
Unlike some counties, the covered bridges in Union County are each very unique and offer some interesting curiosities. If you love covered bridges, you won’t want to miss these great historical remnants.
The Union County covered bridges below are listed from north to south, as well as east to west. Visiting them in the order listed would work well, but you could also reverse the order just as easily.
Factory Covered Bridge
Factory Covered Bridge is the most accessible of the Union County covered bridges and is located just off of Interstate 80, a few miles west of its intersection with Route 15. Also known as Horsham Covered Bridge, this bridge was built in 1880 using both King and Queen trusses.
It was later repaired in both 1954 and 1976.
The bridge is open to traffic and carries vehicles 60 feet over White Deer Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River.
Getting There: Factory Covered Bridge is located in White Deer Township, just a short distance off of I-80. There is a pull-off on the northern side of the bridge from which to view the bridge.
Factory Covered Bridge can be found at the following coordinates: 41.073653, -76.902916.
Hubler Covered Bridge
Out of all the covered bridges in Pennsylvania, the route to Hubler Covered Bridge might be the most interesting. That’s because getting to this bridge requires traveling through the property of the high-security Lewisburg Federal Prison.
In fact, half of the bridge sits on their property. However, don’t let this quirk deter you from visiting.
Hubler Covered Bridge was built in 1850, roughly 80 years before the prison was built. It crosses Little Buffalo Creek just a few yards above Buffalo Creek. The bridge is 33 feet long.
While the bridge appears to be in excellent shape, a chain-link fence keeps visitors from passing through it. I’m assuming that this has something to do with the nearby prison, but don’t know for sure.
A small park has been constructed around the covered bridge, complete with a picnic table.
Getting There: As indicated above, getting to Hubler Covered Bridge requires traversing the grounds of United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg.
At the time of my visit, there were no restrictions on car travel through this area. However, given its location, it’s entirely possible that there could be at some point, or that a guard could inquire about your presence on the property.
Should signs pop up in the future indicating that the road is closed, please respect them.
Hubler Covered Bridge is located at the following coordinates: 40.986050, -76.927862. Access to the bridge is from Sanford Bates Drive.
Hassenplug Covered Bridge
Hassenplug Covered Bridge is considered to be the oldest remaining covered bridge and (likely) the second-oldest covered bridge in the United States ( Hyde Hall Covered Bridge near Cooperstown, NY is the oldest).
Built in 1825, the bridge crosses 80 feet over Buffalo Creek. It was refurbished in 1959.
The bridge is located just outside of the downtown area of Mifflinburg, making it an easy covered bridge to visit when traveling through the area or visiting nearby Rusty Rail Brewing Co and the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum . Given the bridge’s age, it’s amazing that it is still open to traffic.
The bridge is also the trailhead for the Koon’s Trail, which is a one-mile trail that follows Buffalo Creek. This trail offers a nice short hike through the woods and some unique views of Hassenplug Covered Bridge.
Getting There: Hassenplug Covered Bridge is located on North 4th Street, less than a mile from the heart of town. It is located at the following coordinates: 40.923651, -77.049775.
There is room to pull off the road on the side of the bridge closest to town.
Hayes Covered Bridge
Hayes Covered Bridge is another of Union County’s covered bridges to have a unique quirk. Built in 1882 using the King truss, this bridge crosses 63 feet over Buffalo Creek. This bridge is located in a rural area west of Mifflinburg and surrounded by picturesque farmland.
What makes it so unique is that the bridge sits up on a small hill, with an access road making a small half loop around the bridge, allowing oversized cars and trucks to avoid the bridge. However, unlike other covered bridges that have been bypassed by other roads, Hayes Covered Bridge is still open to traffic and part of the main roadway.
The bridge also has one of the lowest clearance bars I’ve seen on a bridge, at a height of only six and a half feet.
Getting There: Hayes Covered Bridge is located two miles west of Mifflinburg, PA, off of Route 45. The road to the bridge is a well-maintained dirt road but may not be maintained during the wintertime.
Hayes Covered Bridge is located at the following coordinates: 40.917326, -77.091513.
Millmont Covered Bridge
Millmont Covered Bridge (also known as Glen Iron Covered Bridge and Millmont Red Covered Bridge) is the longest covered bridge in Union County, Pennsylvania, at 131 feet in length. It crosses Penns Creek and was built in 1855.
In the Spring of 2016, the bridge was closed to cars due to structural issues but remains open for people to walk across the bridge.
Hopefully, this bridge will be reopened to vehicular traffic soon. However, the last time the bridge was closed, in 1998, it didn’t open again to traffic for 12 years. D
riving across this bridge is interesting, as there are few windows, making the ride a bit darker and more claustrophobic than most covered bridges.
Getting There: Millmont Covered Bridge is located in a rural area of western Union County. The bridge is located at the intersection of Route 3004 and Covered Bridge Road. However, there is nowhere to park along Route 3004 to see this bridge.
Because of this, you may have to detour to another bridge to get to the southern side of Penns Creek, where parking space is available.
The coordinates for the parking area at Millmont Covered Bridge are 40.877833, -77.155740.
Other Nearby Destinations
If you’re looking for other options in the area, there are covered bridges that can be visited in nearly every surrounding county including Northumberland , Snyder , Lycoming , and Clinton Counties.
Another option is to head to Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland , just a few miles north of Factory Covered Bridge on Route 15 in Union County or to the very interesting abandoned bunkers of Alvira , Woodward Cave , and the Lewisburg Children’s Museum .

I wanted to tell you my experience with visiting the Hubler Coverered Bridge, today September 22, 2019. We went in through the Penitentiary gates on to Sanford Bates Drive, and were cut off by a guy with what looked like an automatic rifle as his front seat passenger. We told him we were looking for the covered bridge, but without a hint of a smile, told us we were on federal property and that we had to leave. He followed us most of the way out. The other side of the bridge is on Strawbridge Road, almost directly across from the Dale Walking Trail. It has a cattle-style gate with “No Trespassing” signs posted. Unless we got unlucky with a grumpy prison guard (he was not in any kind of uniform, by the way), I’d say this bridge is not accessible to the public. Jim, thanks as always for this terrific resource. I use it often.
Thanks for the update. That’s the first report I’ve had of there being an issue. I’ll keep the information up for now, but I’ll definitely monitor reports about that. If anyone else has had an issue here, please let me know.
Thanks, Jim. I am curious too, if anyone else has encountered anything similar. We also visited the Dale Engle Walker homestead, and the locals we talked to were surprised (amused) at our story. They said that the area down by the creek is a recreation spot for prison employees, and as we were being followed out, we noticed a man on horseback. The whole thing was strange.

Pottersburg Covered Bridge
This bridge was formerly the location of the North Lewisburg Road Covered Bridge. When Honda built their North American headquarters nearby, the one-lane bridge became insufficient for the increase in traffic. To save the bridge, it was moved on a trailer to a "rails to trails" project down the road. The Pottersburg bridge is now part of a 1.9-mile paved multi-purpose trail.
