'Vampire Diaries' stars host Bourbon and Beyond event, serve never-before-tried bourbon

vampire diaries bourbon tour

Concertgoers at Bourbon and Beyond had a tasting with an unusual ... bite ... on Thursday.

Stars from hit TV show “Vampire Diaries” took the Team Kentucky Bourbon Stage to share with fans and bourbon lovers just how their careers went from blood-sucking to spirit sipping.

Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley — better known as their characters the Salvatore brothers — launched their own bourbon brand, Brother's Bond , in May 2021. The duo has been drinking bourbon both on and off screen for more than a decade, and their hand-selected bourbon nods to their on-screen characters and shared love for the spirit.

And they were candid among a genuinely adoring (and sometimes even squealing) crowd of a few hundred people during the tasting on the first day of the festival.

Yes, they are celebrities, even though the two actors choked on the word a bit when they said it.

Yes, Brother’s Bond is a brand.

But this isn’t just "a random celebrity brand," Somerhalder explained to the crowd. "This is our passion."

Bourbon and Beyond: 'The Always Sunny Podcast' joins the 2022 Bourbon & Beyond lineup. Here's what to know

The two friends blended the bourbon at their homes. They worked for years to hone flavor that was both approachable to the young bourbon drinker and complex enough to impress a true aficionado. The television stars intimately invested in every detail of the company, even personally flying to Portugal to pick up the corks for their products.

"Even the dry goods keep me up at night, freaking out," Somerhalder said.

They're more than just two guys who once played vampires on TV. They're complete whiskey nerds, with an impeccable eye for quality.

The first bourbon they poured during the tasting was Brother's Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which clocked in at 80 proof, and had notes of banana bread and rich honey. The second spirit they served was Brother's Bond Original Cask Strength Bourbon, which had a nutty, caramel, and vanilla taste to it. Bourbon and Beyond was the first time anyone in Kentucky had tasted this bourbon, with its big, almost zesty body and strong 115.8 proof.

They refused to give up on their recipe until it reached a complexity and approachability they were proud to serve to guests in their own homes.

"Really this is about bonding with people," Wesley told the crowd. They want their bourbons to bring people together.

They understand that bourbon is an intimidating industry to break into, and they're humbled to have as much success with it as they have up to this point.

Bourbon and Beyond lineup: Young guitarist hailed as 'one of the most exciting' in years, is playing Bourbon & Beyond

Somerhalder beamed with pure admiration when he told the crowd he'd just done a bourbon tasting with industry legend Wes Henderson .

Then, with clear joy and humility, he eagerly invited everyone in the crowd to the Brother's Bond booth to discuss and try their bourbon.

"We’re just so lucky to be doing this," Somerhalder said.

Honey | Caramel | Floral undertone | Touch of spice | Light & inviting

Loads of honey | Light spice | Dried fruit | Easy-drinking for the proof

Honey | Graham cracker | Caramel | Milky Way candy bar | Baking spices develop as the sweet flavors dissipate | Very long

Like drinking honey with a spicy kick, Brother’s Bond Original Cask Strength is a delicious bourbon that ends with an incredibly long finish.

Behind Brother's Bond Bourbon was founded by two American actors - Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder . Probably most well known for their collaborative roles in the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, Wesley and Somerhalder’s friendship eventually led them to create Brother’s Bond Distilling Co. For their cask strength releases, of which we reviewed a previous batch , the company states that “Ian and Paul hand-selected 70 of the finest Brother's Bond Bourbon barrels to create this limited release for bourbon lovers.” On the surface, Brother’s Bond may seem easy to dismiss. It’s a celebrity bourbon that most likely originates from MGP. But Wesley and Somerhalder seem genuinely interested in making a quality product, and their latest batch of Original Cask Strength is proof of that. Starting with a honey, caramel, a touch of spice, and a floral undertone on the nose, the bourbon reveals loads of honey on the palate. This is complemented by light spice and dried fruit, making for a light, easy-drinking sip up to this point. Honey continues into the finish and is joined by graham cracker, caramel, and Milky Way candy bar. Prominent baking spices develop as the sweet flavors dissipate, making for a surprisingly long finish. This is a really enjoyable barrel proof blend, and its long finish is the factor that makes it most memorable. Brother’s Bond Bourbon hadn’t really gotten my attention until now, but this release has me excited for whatever they do next. The bottle being reviewed is number 09938.

Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley Launch New Brother’s Bond Bourbon Whiskey

One morning earlier this spring near Los Angeles, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley are Zooming in from their new office space while, they explain, construction is going on outside. The veteran Vampire Diaries stars, who played the Salvatore brothers on the popular CW show, aren’t on set to film anything right now —  instead, they’re gearing up to release the new, highly-anticipated whiskey they co-founded, called — what else? — Brother’s Bond Bourbon .

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet

Taylor swift unveils double album 'the tortured poets department: the anthology', taylor swift’s new album opens with a stevie nicks poem, dickey betts, allman brothers band singer-guitarist, dead at 80.

For a whiskey that few have tried yet, it’s already proving to be a smash-hit. The four-grain bourbon whiskey hit record numbers when it went on pre-order on the site ReserveBar in fall 2020 and in early 2021. And now, whiskey lovers can finally buy a bottle online (when the site can keep it in stock).

Creating the whiskey from the ground up has been a labor of love for the duo, and it became another chance to work together following their run on eight seasons of one of the hottest series on TV (the complete series is available now on Amazon ) The market for celeb liquor brands seems to be getting more crowded by the minute, but as the two telling Rolling Stone , this new release is made for bourbon lovers, by bourbon lovers.

“There’s a lot of alcohol brands out there and more specifically, in recent years, there’s been a real surge of sort of quote-unquote ‘celebrity-endorsed brands,’ whether it’s a musician or an actor or an athlete,” Wesley says. “And, I think the thing that really distinguishes us…”

“Where do you fall?” Somerhalder interrupts. “You’re a celebrity? Are you calling yourself a celebrity?”

“I was more referring to you,” Wesley says.

Jokes aside, this whiskey has been years in the making for the two actors.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“I think the thing that distinguishes us is that Ian and I, we drank bourbon on the television show that we did and we fell in love with it,” Wesley says. “We shot the show in the South. Our characters drank bourbon on the show. We drank bourbon off-screen. We bonded on-screen, we bonded off-screen drinking bourbon, and so when the show ended, we had been talking about creating a bourbon for years. When the show ended, it was just the perfect time to do it. And so everything you see here, the label, the bottle, the name…”

“Obviously the liquid,” Somerhalder adds.

“… and certainly the mash, it’s all our creation, everything,” Wesley says. “We put this thing together and so for us, it’s just felt incredibly organic.”

The release of Brother’s Bond has been a long time coming. And recently, Somerhalder and Wesley had to be in constant virtual communication when working through the pandemic leading up to the May launch date.

“There’s thousands of messages a week,” Somerhalder says. “We are never not in contact. I mean, there’s not a 20-minute space in time that goes by that we’re not in contact with either each other or our team, which is pretty wild.”

“I just send him selfies, nothing to do with bourbon,” Wesley jokes.

Somerhalder continues. “But for two dudes who spent eight years together, literally 10 months a year, every day, to then be this connected, it was a mistake. [ laughs ] But the bourbon is fucking great.”

Brothers-Bond-Bourbon

Brother’s Bond Bourbon is an 80-proof straight bourbon that some, including this whiskey drinker, might sum up as an incredibly smooth, super drinkable spirit, tasty enough that whiskey lovers will want to pour it neat or on the rocks. But as Wesley and Somerhalder point out, you can find a list of drink recipes on their site if you’re craving a whiskey cocktail, too, from a classic Brother’s Fashioned to a simple Brother’s Julep .

“For two dudes who spent eight years together, literally 10 months a year, every day, to then be this connected, it was a mistake. But the bourbon is fucking great.”

The name “Brother’s Bond Bourbon” is, of course, a nod to their Vampire Diaries characters, with a label that shows two people sitting under a tree. But the guys say the theme goes well beyond just the show.

“Our characters bonded on-screen over bourbon,” Somerhalder says, “he and I bonded off-screen over bourbon, and now to think that new bonds — random people meeting — [to] old bonds, families, friends, brothers, sisters, dads, moms, aunts, uncles getting to just have conversations, holding our bourbon in their hands… that’s pretty special, man, you know?”

Brother’s Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey is available now to order on ReserveBar .

Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley

Are you thirsty for another celebrity booze brand ? If so, you’re in luck.

Actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley launched Brother’s Bond Bourbon in May of 2021, several years after their long stint on The Vampire Diaries television show ended. And now, after a few delays, they are bringing a cask-strength version of the bourbon to market, one that’s strong enough for hardcore whiskey fans but accessible to novices as well.

From the get-go, the two intended for Brother’s Bond to be a bourbon that anyone could drink, while still maintaining a high level of quality. The bourbon is produced at MGP in Indiana from a mashbill of 65 percent corn and 22 percent rye, with the remainder made up of wheat and barley, and bottled at 80 proof. The new cask-strength version is a limited release that clocks in at 115.8 proof, which is strong but not high octane enough to melt your face. “This was the time to release this whiskey,” said Somerhalder in a recent interview. “People have been asking, some of them have even been bitching.”

The point of releasing a cask strength bourbon was to introduce Brother’s Bond to drinkers who might normally steer away from anything 80 proof, the lowest at which whiskey can legally be bottled. Wesley pointed out that a lot of bourbon fans forgive this minimum ABV when it comes to brands like Basil Hayden, but for some reason they wouldn’t give Brother’s Bond a chance. “From the beginning, we knew we were gonna get some of that from the aficionados,” he said. “This is going to be more for purists who want to try the whiskey in its natural form.” But according to Somerhalder, it runs both ways. “Even at a higher ABV, our flavor profile shines through, without sounding like a goofball, literally like a beacon in the night. People who don’t typically drink barrel-proof whiskey are drinking this going, ‘Now I get it.’”

The new cask-strength bourbon  Brother's Bond

As far as that celeb booze brand thing, they both claim to be aware of the pitfalls. “We’re aware of the stereotype of two guys who slapped their name on a bottle of bourbon,” Wesley said. “And the only way to counteract that,” interjected Somerhalder, “is with quality. You can argue with Paul and I and say we’re not good actors and we haven’t won an Oscar, but you cannot argue with quality.”

Wesley acknowledged that both the whiskey being 80 proof and celebrity aspect may be unappealing to some. “Some people might be like, ‘It’s a cash grab,’” he said. “But the idea was just to introduce bourbon to the consumer and not make it too hot, too high proof. But we also knew we were gonna later introduce other age statements and proofs, so we would have an offering for everyone.”

A Brother’s Bond rye whiskey is in the works as well, which Wesley says has similar DNA to the two bourbons they have already released (in other words, this won’t be a typical MGP 95 percent rye, but more in a Kentucky style with somewhere above 51 percent rye in the mashbill).

Brother’s Bond Bourbon Cask Strength will be available for presale at Reserve Bar starting July 19.

For Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder , their mutual love of bourbon — much like their brotherly bond — has been over a decade in the making.

The former co-stars turned business partners are famed for their portrayal as vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore on The CW’s franchise hit The Vampire Diaries . But Wesley and Somerhalder’s on-screen brotherhood extends far beyond the eight-season run of the show that catapulted them to stardom.

When they weren’t playing blood-thirsty vampires on-screen, Wesley and Somerhalder were building a thirsty tradition of their own — drinking bourbon, of course, off-set after hours.

“So we could tolerate each other off-screen,” Wesley jokes.

“It became this thing we did on-screen and then off,” the actor adds. “We were shooting in the South, and I never really appreciated bourbon until I was living in Atlanta.”

A Louisiana native, Somerhalder grew up surrounded by the culture of Southern whiskey. “I’ve been drinking bourbon for 25 years,” the actor says. “It pumps through my veins.”

So, after over a decade of drinking together, Wesley says that creating their own bourbon “felt like an incredibly organic thing to do.”

And so began their journey to creating Brother’s Bond Bourbon — a passion project that has seen Wesley and Somerhalder through the next stage of not only their professional relationship, but their friendship, as well.

The pair — “attached at the hip,” says Wesley, in their Vampire Diaries days — are now in the midst of what they call their “2.0” phase of life. “This is gonna be another decade together,” Somerhalder says.

For the target audience of their new product, they’re looking to extend beyond that of their TVD following — the show, which ended in 2017, was the 15th most-streamed series of 2020, according to Nielsen’s yearly rankings — and into the homes of bourbon connoisseurs and new whiskey drinkers alike.

The name of the product — Brother’s Bond — is a nod to Wesley and Somerhalder’s on-screen relationship, but also to the camaraderie formed between friends and family over a shared drink. I t’s a four-grain bourbon, made from a blend of corn, rye, wheat and malt, which is then distilled in a combination of copper-column stills, as well as copper pot-doublers. Described on their website as “elegant and exceptionally smooth … with a touch of sweetness & spice,” the taste profile notes a complex balance of flavors including baked banana bread, dried fruit, warm rye spice and fresh cut oak.

Luckily, the former co-stars share the same palate when it comes to bourbon. That is, they like an out-of-bottle approach. But for all their similarities in taste preferences, the co-founders note their differences as business partners — Somerhalder as the dreamer and Wesley as the realist.

“Ian is an eternal optimist and I’m an eternal pessimist,” Wesley says. “We balance each other out in so many ways — he’ll go big, and then I’ll bring him down a little sometimes, when it’s necessary.”

“Paul and I cut through the bullshit,” Somerhalder adds matter-of-factly. “It’s great from a productivity standpoint, our team loves it.”

Surrounded by a group of long-established players in the spirits business, the co-founders sing the praises of the team who are helping bring their vision to reality.  With over 20 years of wine and spirits industry experience, Brother’s Bond co-founder and CEO Vincent Hanna — “the illegitimate third brother,” Wesley jokes — has served as a guide in the brand’s decision-making processes.  Prior to Brother’s Bond, Hanna managed the Peter Igel Group wines & spirits brokerage business, selling millions of liters globally and supplying Constellation, Gallo, Bacardi, Arterra and Andrew Peller, as well as other multinational alcohol beverage companies.

Often to the surprise of various buyers and distributors, Wesley and Somerhalder insist on taking a hands-on approach to the business — they make a point to be a part of every decision, every process, and even every Zoom call.

And they don’t like the term “celebrity.”

“Ian loves to call himself a celebrity,” Wesley jokes.

“We really don’t like saying that word,” Somerhalder says. “It really matters as an asset, but it makes us sound so douchey. We sound like such tools.”

“Egomaniacal actors,” the other affirms.

“But we refuse to compromise when it comes to quality,” Somerhalder continues. “You can have a celebrity-driven or celebrity-powered label and a bunch of investment capital behind you, but if what’s in your bottle is not quality, then you have nothing.”

In their search for that high-level quality, they carried out an extensive tasting process. Night after night, the pair spent hours in Somerhalder’s living room, sampling an endless amount of iterations before finally getting it right.

“We’ve painstakingly driven ourselves insane,” Somerhalder jokes of their determination to perfect what he calls the “gold standard.” Once that standard was pinned down, every batch since has been approved by a sensory panel  — Wesley and Somerhalder included — all to ensure a consistent quality across all bottles.

And the time-consuming process of fine-tuning the perfect bourbon wasn’t much different from Wesley’s audition experience for The Vampire Diaries .

“I’ve never read more times in my life,” Wesley recalled of the casting process, in which he read for three different parts.

But Somerhalder felt similarly. “I was deeply concerned I was not gonna get that role,” he remembers.

But with Brother’s Bond, the TV stars didn’t have a shred of doubt.

“There was never a moment when I didn’t think we would find it,” he continues. “My wife would come downstairs and say ‘This is crazy, get some sleep, you can do it again tomorrow, it’s three in the morning.’”

“And then Ian and I would go to sleep in the guest room,” Wesley joked of the pair’s extensive time spent in close quarters together. “Now I’m kidding.”

Much like their real-life counterparts, Wesley and Somerhalder’s on-screen characters were portrayed drinking bourbon throughout the show. Of course, it wasn’t actual alcohol they were imbibing. Early on, they were downing black tea that left them wired off the caffeine buzz (“We didn’t realize how caffeinated it was,” Wesley explains).

As part of their endeavor, Somerhalder and Wesley also are pushing forward in the fight against climate change. Brother’s Bond is giving back 1 percent of gross revenues to regenerative farming in support of the goal to reduce the negative effects of large-scale agriculture and farming. It’s an issue Somerhalder has been active in; the actor, founder of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation,  served as an executive producer in 2020 on Netflix’s Kiss the Ground , an environmental documentary focused on the healing power of regenerative agriculture.

This summer, Brother’s Bond — available for around $40 to $60 for a 750 ml bottle — expanded its national reach, and is currently being released on a rolling basis across the country.

And as the name suggests, Wesley and Somerhalder want their bourbon to create a bond among the people who share it.

“If you are going to have a drink, drink in good company,” Wesley advises.

We drank three rounds with Vampire Diaries stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder

The former costars are launching Brother's Bond Bourbon on May 1.

Samantha is a writer based in Los Angeles. Television is her one true love, and she tweets about it. A lot.

vampire diaries bourbon tour

Sitting side by side in their new Malibu creative space, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley are talking about Malcolm Gladwell. Or rather, they're talking about bourbon when things somehow lead to Malcolm Gladwell. In his book Outliers , Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master something. "The Beatles played for 10,000 hours together," Somerhalder says. "Bill Gates programmed for 10,000 hours before he started Microsoft." So what does this have to do with these former Vampire Diaries stars who are launching their own bourbon ? "We've had 10,000 hours to perfect our friendship," Wesley says with a laugh. "10,000 hours to figure out how to tolerate one another. And we mastered it!"

Put another way, they've had 11 years to perfect their bond, which is approximately 150 fewer years than the vampires they played on the hit CW series. For eight seasons and 171 episodes, Wesley and Somerhalder played vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore — Stefan, the good brother with great hair and a crippling blood addiction, and Damon, the bad brother who tried to disguise his big heart with enigmatic one-liners and the occasional snapped neck. The series launched both actors to stardom, but it also gave them an idea: After years of drinking bourbon — which was really iced tea — on the show, what if they created their own?

In early April, the former co-stars sat down to drink three rounds with EW via Zoom. Unlike Stefan and Damon, they weren't drinking to sublimate blood cravings or to forget that they've got a thousand-year-old vampire after them. This time around, they were drinking to celebrate.

On May 1, they will launch Brother's Bond — "we couldn't name it Brother's Want to Kill Each Other," Somerhalder jokes — a nod to their time playing on-screen brothers and also to their real-life friendship. EW joined them for three of their signature cocktails and while it's unlikely they could out-drink the Salvatore brothers, they're certainly better at having a good time.

ROUND 1: MYSTIC CHARMER (BOURBON, HONEY SYRUP, LEMON JUICE, GINGER ALE)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did the idea for Brother's Bond start while you were on The Vampire Diaries ?

PAUL WESLEY: Yeah we've been talking about doing this for a decade. For those who haven't seen the show, we played brothers who drank bourbon on-screen. Off-screen, Ian and I also bonded drinking bourbon. Obviously we weren't drinking bourbon on-screen otherwise, well, his performance would've been a lot better. He would've forgotten even more lines. [ Laughs ] The reality is we would finish shooting and we'd go to the bar or we'd go to our homes or whatever, but we'd always kick back and have a bourbon so we developed this love for bourbon.

SOMERHALDER: It's the only way that we could actually tolerate each other. [ Laughs ]

WESLEY: So we fell in love with it. And when the show ended we finally had some time and we really put this thing together. We're just so proud of it.

SOMERHALDER: We did this in the middle of a global pandemic together. We spent eight years on TV together only to now, now that we're on year 11 together, this is the longest relationship I've ever had.

Let's talk "firsts." What was your first alcoholic drink?

WESLEY: I grew up between America and Poland. I was never one of those kids that was like, "Oh my god I can't wait to turn 21 and start drinking!" I never went through that phase because we looked at it as: You drink when you're having dinner. So I don't remember what my first drink was but I never went through that phase of college alcohol madness. It was just something that adults would have when they were bonding.

SOMERHALDER: I'm from New Orleans, my grandmother was French. You'd have wine at dinner, and she would sometimes give me a little spoonful. It wasn't taboo. All the parents would get together after church on Sundays and drink mint juleps on the porch and we'd have little sips. Those were very special times. It was never about alcohol. It was more about family.

WESLEY: With that said I will say I developed my appreciation for bourbon while living in the South while filming.

SOMERHALDER: We were in Atlanta for eight years.

WESLEY: I wasn't introduced to dark spirits or bourbon until then and I realized, "Oh wow this is my kind of drink."

Career-wise, what was your first audition?

WESLEY: I started doing theater in elementary school and then I was doing this theater workshop in New York City and an agent saw me and said, "Hey do you want to audition for a soap opera?" And I was like, "Yeah, of course." So I auditioned for the soap opera and I got the job.

SOMERHALDER: You were young, right?

WESLEY: Yeah I was really young. That was my first real audition. I had done like a couple little commercials but I'd never really auditioned, I was more like an extra. But that was my first real audition and I got the gig. The show got canceled like three months later. [ Laughs ]

SOMERHALDER: What show?

WESLEY: It was called Another World . I don't think I was the first choice but regardless I got the part. [ Laughs ]

SOMERHALDER: I want to say my first audition, either at school or for a production, was like fourth grade maybe. Then I remember being in my first play when I was in sixth grade, like a full-scale school production. It was really cool. I knew very early this is what I want to do. [ Turns to Wesley ] you and I been doing this a long time.

WESLEY: [ To EW ] Why's he looking at me so seriously? That was so intense.

SOMERHALDER: I'm just saying that's pretty cool. We've been acting like we like each other for 11 years but we've been acting for a damn long time.

WESLEY: But we're still not any good.

SOMERHALDER: No doubt, but we have an amazing bourbon and that's all that matters.

WESLEY: If you drink a lot of Brother's Bond our performances get better.

Round 2: BLOOD BROTHERS (BOURBON, LEMON JUICE, SIMPLE SYRUP, PORT)

SOMERHALDER: This is a whiskey sour but the brothers' way. What we love about this is a whiskey sour people know but you just add that little bit of port on top of it and that beautiful hint of oak really balances out all the citrus.

WESLEY: I'm like a whiskey sour and you're the port.

SOMERHALDER: No you're just sour. [ Laughs ]

On The Vampire Diaries , you all drank iced tea in place of bourbon, so can you drink iced tea anymore or were you done with it by the end of the show?

WESLEY: I'll tell you a funny iced tea story. We were obviously drinking the iced tea quite often and when you're on set, you're doing take after take after take after take and you take a sip in a scene, well for continuity you have to do it essentially from every angle. So the first season I couldn't sleep. I was jittery, I thought I was nervous. Turns out I was just consuming so much caffeine. So season 2 we switched it out to decaffeinated iced tea.

SOMERHALDER: Season 1 we were lunatics because we were drinking this tea.

At the start of Vampire Diaries , you all got apartments next to each other so you could rehearse all the time, right? Did you end up rehearsing a lot?

WESLEY: We flew to Atlanta together so we could find apartments. We literally got out of the car, it just so happened we were wearing the same outfit.

SOMERHALDER: No we arrived at the airport. When I met you I pulled up and I had a hybrid car, we had some flashy rims on it and really tinted windows--

WESLEY: We had white T-shirts--

SOMERHALDER: We were wearing the exact same clothes.

WESLEY: Same jeans--

[IN UNISON]: Same boots--

WESLEY: And the same glasses.

SOMERHALDER: And the same backpack.

WESLEY: And backpack.

SOMERHALDER: Oh yeah we had black Ray Bans!

WESLEY : We pulled up to the hotel and they were like, "Are you guys in a band?" [ Laughs ]

SOMERHALDER: We looked like the Blues Brothers, I'm not kidding you.

WESLEY: The show hadn't premiered yet. It was really funny.

SOMERHALDER: It hadn't premiered yet, we hadn't even shot it yet.

WESLEY: We spent a ton of time rehearsing.

SOMERHALDER: That's why we wanted our apartments next to each other. We knew that we needed to be brothers but we wanted to rehearse everything.

WESLEY: Hey you know what, in this new creative space should we get a bunk bed? [ Laughs ] And then have sleepovers and talk bourbon?

SOMERHALDER: Big brother gets the top bunk.

WESLEY: You do try your best to form a bond with whomever you're working with because you spend a lot of time together. With us it came pretty easily. I think a lot of our synergy, we joke around about it but the truth is, we are kind of different.

SOMERHALDER: Totally!

WESLEY: I think that's what kind of allows it to sort of co-exist. I think when people are too similar, at first it can be great but then it ends up kind of wearing itself out in a way. We're so different that he brings what he brings to the table, I bring what I bring to the table and it just sort of blends nicely. I think that it's a unique but really fantastic synergy for not only friendship but business.

SOMERHALDER: It's also been tested. You're talking about over a decade of testing. He and I, we helped build a massive pop cultural phenomenon of a television show together—

WESLEY: In all humility.

SOMERHALDER: I do say that all in humility but built on the backs of us and our cast and our whole production team. But this dude and I had to show up every day and love what we were doing, respect one another, and build on it every single day. I mean it, our souls are in this bottle.

WESLEY: Don't quote me on that.

ROUND 3: BOURBON TEASE (BOURBON, GINGER KOMBUCHA, LEMON WEDGE, GINGER)

It's also important to note that your company isn't just about bourbon. What made you all decide to direct some of your proceeds elsewhere?

SOMERHALDER: The idea is millenial consumers and Gen Z consumers, they want to know that the companies that they are spending their hard-earned dollars supporting are going to something that is meaningful, that these companies are good stewards of their environment, their corporate structure, their communities, whatever it may be. That's why we are so proud of this company. It's not just building these incredible cocktails or even bourbon you can drink warm out of the bottle--

WESLEY: I think what he's getting at is we have give-back component. A portion of all of our sales is going towards regenerative agriculture. What Ian says is totally accurate, I think these days if you start a company you have to think about how you can give back

SOMERHALDER: Scientifically, we know regenerative agriculture can stop climate change in its tracks. Regenerative agriculture can literally put climate change in our rearview mirror and in a time in which we need togetherness more than ever, this is the ethos of our company, it's bringing people together.

WESLEY: One of the other things that I think is so special about our brand, or at least what we stand for and the ethos of our company, we're not interested in just selling alcohol. We're interested in people purchasing this and experiencing a bond with whomever they're sharing it with. I know it sounds kind of cheesy but it's true, alcohol is meant to be consumed in celebration, in kinsmanship, as a bond and so we really want, the Brother's Bond name, yeah okay it's a nod to us, but at the end of the day it's a bond with whomever you're sharing this drink with. That's so important for us to really note to our fans and to people that are buying this, to really enjoy this with someone.

SOMERHALDER: The idea is you can bring people together with an authenticity and a story that makes people feel good while doing good.

WESLEY: I thought my last word was best.

The Spirits Business

The big interview: ian somerhalder and paul wesley, brother’s bond bourbon.

Actors Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder met when they starred in The Vampire Diaries and soon discovered their mutual love of Bourbon, which they have transformed into Brother’s Bond. We spoke to the duo to learn about their plans for the brand.

*This feature was originally published in the November 2021 issue of The Spirits Business magazine.

When The Vampire Diaries first aired in 2009 on The CW channel, it kick‐started a decade‐long bond between the supernatural drama’s leading actors, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, who played Bourbon‐loving vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore.

But the friendship blossomed beyond the show, leading the pair to launch a Bourbon brand in 2020, aptly called Brother’s Bond. It was named after their former roles on the show, as well as their shared love of Bourbon and the ‘brotherhood’ they developed over the years they starred together.

“Ultimately, Ian and I bonded on screen, the two characters we played drank Bourbon on screen and we drank Bourbon off screen,” Wesley explains over Zoom, joined by Somerhalder, from their homes in Los Angeles. “That was our ritual in Atlanta [where the show was filmed] for almost a decade. After the show finished it continued to be our ritual; it was the obvious choice. I only drink Bourbon, I don’t drink Tequila or gin or anything. So I can’t imagine doing anything else.

“It was a conversation that began in Atlanta a decade ago and we were like ‘man, we should be doing something like this’. Frankly speaking, we were so busy. We were shooting 22 episodes, sometimes more, a year – nine and a half months out of a year.”

Plans for the future

In 2017, as The Vampire Diaries came to an end after eight seasons and 171 episodes, the two started formulating their plans for the future. “When we were getting to the tail end of the show, at six or seven seasons, we knew we needed to plan our routes of where we were going and what we were going to do,” explains Somerhalder. “My wife [actor Nikki Reed] and I knew we were going to have a baby at some point soon. Paul and I talked and figured out structurally how we were going to plan this out.

“Then the time came. Bourbon requires a tremendous amount of patience; it takes four years to get one bottle of our Bourbon, it’s quite complicated. The level of patience and efficiency of our team who brought our vision to life, it’s nothing short of a miracle. This is just the beginning.”

The process of the Bourbon took more than a year of blending, morning and night, adds Somerhalder. “I’m not trying to sound like a lunatic alcoholic who can’t control himself, but we are obsessed with this Bourbon,” he says. “What we were looking for was approachability, complexity and nuance to carry it to a Bourbon drinker.”

The resulting flagship product is a four-grain, high‐rye Bourbon comprising 65% corn, 22% rye and a percentage of wheat and barley that has not been disclosed. It is aged for a minimum of four years in virgin American oak barrels.

“Ian and I have the exact same taste,” says Wesley. “I’m not gonna spend my time pushing a product that I don’t like, that I don’t wanna drink myself. When we present it to friends and family, they see that I’m sincere about it. It makes my job so much easier.”

The Bourbon business is new territory for the actors, but they are keen to bring their story to life through the brand. Wesley says: “I’m still learning the ropes. I consider myself to have an entrepreneurial mind, but I’ve never embarked on anything like this. Everything I’ve done is in the entertainment industry, whether it’s producing, acting or directing. It’s been an educational experience to say the least.”

Branching out into Bourbon with Somerhalder has also helped Wesley to balance it with his entertainment career.

“What I do in the public, in entertainment, will feed into the story of the Bourbon. They’re not in direct competition; it’s about learning how to balance the two. I’ve done two projects since launching the Bourbon; it was tough but thankfully Ian was around. When Ian does something I cover for him. That’s what’s great about having a partner in the industry.”

Somerhalder is candid in his response: “Honestly, I don’t even have an acting career anymore; there’s so much focus on this company and raising my child. I don’t know when I’ll be on screen again. There’s one show I want to do that I will produce and direct, write and star in. Honestly, I think that’s probably it. One more show.”

The pair are keen to expand the range with several line extensions. The company will roll out a cask strength bottling as its first line extension, as well as a bottled‐in‐bond Bourbon, and there are plans for a straight rye. “We have an eight‐year programme that is going to knock people’s socks off,” Somerhalder teases. “It’s a four‐year rollout. That’s all I can say right now. You’ve gotta think about eight years in a barrel for every year that Paul and I were on the air together; it’s a very special number.”

The duo have big plans to build the brand for decades to come, including eventually opening a Brother’s Bond distillery in Kentucky. “We want this company to be not only meaningful for us, but a legacy brand, a 50‐generation brand,” says Somerhalder. “We have that ability; we’re setting the foundations for that right now. I just got back from Kentucky and saw some unbelievable properties there; we want to build a brand home.

“Kentucky was always a north star for me. I was a poor kid in Louisiana, and I grew up on the racetrack, I always read the magazines and saw the videos of those big green rolling hills and all the beautiful horses, the Bourbon culture. It was such a part of my culture growing up. I always wanted to be in Kentucky, and now being in Kentucky and driving around and looking at properties for where we’re going to make our own home and distillery is just mind‐blowing.”

The ethos of the brand also goes beyond the actors’ connection, seeking to bring drinkers together to enjoy Bourbon. Wesley says: “It’s been a very divisive time in the world, a very stressful time, so when we created Brother’s Bond it was about our bond and friendship and sense of connection with one another, but that extends beyond ourselves to creating a community. It’s not about drinking it by yourself.”

Currently, the Bourbon is produced in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, by third‐party producer MGP . Wesley explains: “We’re building this company at a very rapid pace; we’re shipping a lot of bottles. Ultimately, we need a company like MGP to help us scale this at a level we want. And we’re very grateful that they have the capacity to be able to support us in that way.”

The brand achieved the ‘most successful pre‐sale launch’ in the history of US platform Reserve Bar, on which it secured the speediest sales in a 24‐hour period, following pre‐sales in autumn 2020 and January 2021.

Fastest-selling

According to the brand, there are early indications that it could become the fastest‐selling super‐premium Bourbon in the US . In the first 60 days of its launch, more than 40,000 cases were shipped. Somerhalder says 5,000 bottles of the 10,000 total sold out in under four hours, while the remaining half was gone after 16.

Wesley adds the intention was to pre‐launch it so that people could give it as gifts: “That was pretty wild. We didn’t think we were gonna sell that many bottles in the first 24 hours.” And Somerhalder says: “They were ordering the Bourbon in November when they knew they weren’t getting it until February or March the next year.”

The brand then did another pre‐sale in January with 24,000 bottles. “Within the first 15 minutes, 5,000 bottles were gone and then in the first 40 minutes, 15,000 were gone,” Somerhalder explains. “It was really amazing, we had to cut it off at 24,000 bottles; we didn’t have any more. After we had shut it down, customers kept trying to buy multiples, which was amazing to see. Once we can get this into the market, I think people will be excited, and it will be a lot easier in larger quantities. We sold a million dollars’ worth of Bourbon in 24 hours.”

Through US distributor Republic National Distributing Company, the Bourbon is available for sale online, in national and regional chains, and independent stores in 27 US states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The brand has also racked up an impressive following. The duo says Brother’s Bond is the most‐followed alcohol brand on Instagram, with 1.6 million followers to date.

A portion of the Bourbon sales income will be donated to regenerative farming efforts. Somerhalder was an executive producer of 2020’s Kiss the Ground , a documentary that explores soil regeneration to stabilise the Earth’s climate and restore ecosystems. The company has purchased regenerative grain for its whiskey . “Our goal is to become carbon neutral as a company,” explains Wesley.

Somerhalder adds: “Carbon negative, not even carbon neutral. Regenerative agriculture we know scientifically can literally stop climate change in its tracks, put it in its rear window. This company is leading the charge in the spirits space to make sure that regenerative agriculture is a huge part of what we do, sequestering enormous sums of carbon dioxide and putting it back in the ground where it belongs.”

Does the company have global aspirations for the brand? “Big time,” says Wesley, who adds: “Ultimately the launch has been so great, so successful, but we only have a certain quantity of the Bourbon. Right now we’re selling out in America, we don’t even have the capacity, but we’re obviously going to expand and have more Bourbon in the coming years. We’re going to head all over, including Europe and South America.”

Launching Brother’s Bond during the pandemic also proved to be particularly tough for the duo. “The last 18‐24 months have been the most challenging times of my adult life,” says Somerhalder. “Paul and I would be talking to each other at 3am going ‘what if the blend’s improper?’ Where it gets complicated is when you’re at way over 50,000 cases, keeping track of it, keeping everything moving and making sure everything checks out quality‐wise is pretty intense. That’s the stuff that would keep me up at night, then I realise we have a great system of passionate professionals on this team.

“I had a business that failed that I completely financed, which went upside down. I had to deal with that on top of building this and raising a kid. Paul and I, for large parts of this, couldn’t even be together, but we got it all done. It was a big challenge; it makes you so much better every single time you get over that hurdle. You look back and you realise that’s one more thing you have over your belt. It’s been an amazing journey and at least we get to do it together.”

Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder on Friendship and Their New Bourbon: It's a 'Brotherhood'

"This has been 10 years in the making," Ian Somerhalder tells PEOPLE of the craft bourbon he created with Paul Wesley, Brother's Bond

Though it's been four years since Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley last shared the screen as brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore on The CW drama The Vampire Diaries , the real-life best friends haven't missed a beat while creating and developing their joint passion project: bourbon.

In this week's issue of PEOPLE, the duo open about their latest venture, their friendship throughout the years, and whether or not there's a possibility of reprising their Vampire Diaries roles in the future.

"This has been 10 years in the making," Somerhalder, 42, says of their craft bourbon Brother's Bond , which will be available in stores and online May 1. "Our soul is in this bottle."

"A lot of people will put their names on something, and then their heart's not in it," says Wesley, 38. "For us, everything in this bottle is ours. This label, we created, the name, we created, the design, we created, the taste, the mash — everything is our creation. This is about people drinking it together in celebration of something or taking a moment to talk to one another."

"Life is tough," Ian adds. "Life kicks you in the teeth. Your bourbon doesn't need to."

Somerhalder and Wesley discussed going into business together for years, and the idea of creating bourbon came organically.

"I've always been a bourbon guy," says Wesley. "It's always appealed to my palette. Our characters used to drink a lot of bourbon. Ian and I would go out, during the weekends or after work, and take it easy. And it would always be bourbon. It just become like, second nature."

"If we're going to have a drink, it's going to be bourbon," he continues. "So we became these kind of like, pseudo bourbon snob connoisseurs. We love our bourbon. We know what we like. So that's the genesis of this and that's how this whole thing started. And so we felt like if we're going to do anything together, it has to be bourbon."

"There was no defining moment," adds Ian. "We talked about this over and over and over and the joke is, and it's kind of true, this is not like a friendship. This is like a brotherhood, it's like a marriage. We've been in it together for so long."

Given their history of working side by side, becoming successful business partners came naturally for the pair.

"We've obviously worked together for so long and our characters complemented each other on screen — we were kind of like polar opposites," Wesley explains. "And what's very interesting, is that we both bring the opposite to the table in a positive way. "

"Ian's like the eternal optimist, eternally happy, eternally positive," he adds. "And I'm like, 'Oh, this is going to go wrong. This is going to go wrong.' You can't have one without the other. Kind of like rain and sunshine."

"Well, without the rain, nothing will grow," Somerhalder says.

While they credit their strong bond to their time spent together on The Vampire Diaries , Somerhalder and Wesley are looking towards the future.

"With all due respect, it was such a great period of my life," Wesley says of his time on the show. "And I'm so grateful, but for me, everyone has chapters and that's that chapter. And this is a new chapter. You don't want to ruin what's already been created."

"I often have said, because I've had this conversation so many times with people and I thought, 'Well, what would that look like?'" Somerhalder says of revisiting his character. "And I can't imagine it."

Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley Could Be the Most Obsessive (and Handsome) Men Making Whiskey

The former Vampire Diaries costars did pretty much everything but get "fucking married" in their year of devotion to getting Brother's Bond Bourbon exactly right.

vampire diaries bourbon

Brother's Bond was a spirit first conceived on the set of The Vampire Diaries before the actors had even wrapped the hugely successful supernatural CW drama. Their characters, the Salvatore brothers, had a taste for the Southern staple, which dovetailed nicely into the actors' own love for the stuff. A Louisiana native, Somerhalder recalls the grown-ups sipping Mint Juleps on the porch under the ceiling fans after church on Sunday. "For me, bourbon was about culture," he says. And though Wesley is a damn Yankee (New Jersey born), he's come to appreciate those bourbon roots after shooting the show in Atlanta for so long. Twelve years after the duo first started working together, the fangs have been traded out for stills and mash bills.

With a lot of celebrity-backed liquors , the personal touch stops at the name. Somerhalder and Wesley, though, spent over a year becoming versed in rye and corn and grain proportions. They wanted a whiskey that bit harder than your average bourbon without setting your mouth ablaze like a full-blown rye. They charted out an idea for something that was smooth and smoky enough . Something woodsy and, oh, it also had to be environmentally sustainable. Turns out when you help drive the process yourself, you can accomplish all those things. The result is Brother's Bond—a hat tip to the characters that brought them together—which will be available starting May 1 . While the name may be an ode to the past, the spirit itself is indicative of what Somerhalder and Wesley want for their future.

brother's bond bourbon

A business partnership, much like bourbon, is largely about chemistry. Over Zoom, Wesley is clearly the stoic partner of the two. Somerhalder is decidedly not. He moves from subject to subject (equal sensory proportions! the benefits of regenerative agriculture!) like there's no topic more exciting. They are the most handsome distilling nerds you've ever met. When I ask what the process of working together has been like, Somerhalder's eyes light up from underneath the flat brim of his flimsy brown cowboy hat as he loudly proclaims, "Well, we're fucking married." The laughter subsides and Wesley follows him up: "I think Ian and I have butted heads—I don't even—like maybe twice in 11 years?"

Bourbon is a difficult market to break into. The industry can be exclusive, if not a bit snobbish . The financial barriers stop most from entering. The official regulations on process and expectations for taste keep most who enter from succeeding. "It's the most all-intensive spirit you can have other than, I guess, scotch," Somerhalder says. "It's highly competitive. The people who are in the space are the ballers of the bourbon industry."

It wasn't until the two of them got into the process— really into it—that they realized just how much effort it'd require. " Paul and I were super tired," Somerhalder says of the night it hit him. "I look around my house... beakers and shit everywhere." He remembers sitting down, noting all the glasses and the paperwork as his feet, and saying, "Wow, we are actually doing this." Wesley adds, "This is eight, nine months into it. It was really special just to be able to have that connectivity, which is: We are not stopping until we get it right ."

Of course, "right" is subjective. Judging from the sample bottle sent to me, Brother's Bond is oaky with more spice than a traditional bourbon , with a sting that lingers on the tongue without scalding it. That's due to the spirit's mash bill: The ratio comes in with a typically robust 65 percent corn, but its higher rye content is more distinctive, at 22 percent. It's easy to drink, but never so innocuous that you'd forget it's there.

"I love smoky and woody and all that, but... I don't want it to kick me—as Ian would say, 'Kick me in the teeth,'" Wesley explains. After hundreds of iterations, they finally settled on the right combination—a blend of bourbons distilled in Indiana , bottled and distributed by Brother's Bond out of Arkansas. Nervous they'd tricked themselves into acceptance, Wesley and Somerhalder walked away and tried their blend again 20 minutes later. Then an hour later. Then the next morning. They loved it every time. "Obviously, you have a whole team and there's a lot of science behind it," Somerhalder says. But when they knew, they knew . " We're like, 'Stop, no more. Just stop.' It was a cool moment."

It didn't end with nailing the formula, either. Somerhalder'll talk your ear off about how farming can help reduce carbon emissions and revitalize top soil. "Dude, if you start to practice regenerative agriculture, the South and the Southeast hold so much power to sequester so much carbon dioxide and produce such a powerful, healthy, and economically surging agricultural industry," he says. With the Earth in such dire straits, a glass of bourbon can only take the edge off temporarily, so a portion of Brother's Bond's profits will go toward regenerative farming practices.

Yes, this bourbon is a new chapter for the two men, but in a funny way, it's also a cheeky wink to so many viewers who came of age with The Vampire Diaries . "Ian and I haven't obviously done anything together since the show ended," Wesley says. "It's like something our fans get to look forward to that are 21 and over, and the reality is a lot of them are." As Somerhalder points out, if you were 15 when the show debuted in 2009, you're well into drinking age in 2021.

Now, all that's left is to get the public's (and a fanbase's) verdict: Do these acting fellas really have what it takes to wade into the world of bourbon? "Our wives thought we were crazy," Somerhalder says. "We were, man." Wesley adds, "The thing we were chasing was that we wanted it to be a smooth, approachable whiskey that's nuanced... so someone who doesn't drink bourbon can try it and say, 'Oh wow, I actually like bourbon.'" All they can do is hope the reception is like the whiskey: smooth, without kicking you in the teeth.

The Salvatore Brothers Teamed Up on a Bourbon, and Suddenly I Love Dark Liquor

Updated on 5/27/2020 at 6:19 PM

vampire diaries bourbon tour

When it comes to alcohol, I typically stick to clear ones like vodka, gin, and spiked seltzer . But it looks like I'll be venturing into the world of dark liquor soon, now that Damon and Stefan Salvatore — er, I mean Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley — have reunited to create their own bourbon. The Vampire Diaries costars just launched a new liquor company dubbed Brother's Bond (hah, get it?), and my taste buds are already tingling just thinking about it.

Ian first announced the bloody-exciting news on Instagram in September . "Can you imagine if the Salvatore brothers had their OWN bourbon?" he wrote. "Well, it's coming! @paulwesley and I have been working our asses off with our incredible team to make this happen." The actor directly addressed the devoted Vampire Diaries fan base , adding, "You've given us so many wonderful years as these characters and we want to bring you something to enjoy that brings back some great memories and some good times to come!"

As if the Salvatore brothers teaming up on a new liquor brand wasn't thrilling enough, Ian added that Brother's Bond will help in the fight against climate change . "Part of our company mission and ethos is to invest profits into helping our world through regenerative agriculture and farming practices," he explained. "It's the surest and quickest way to slow climate change by sequestering carbon and producing oxygen." Well, that's most certainly a mission we can cheers to!

After months of anticipation, Ian finally revealed what Brother's Bond bourbon looks like on Wednesday. "Here it is," he captioned an Instagram post showing off a bottle. "Our passion. Our baby." The label features each actor's signature, and the liquor is a tantalizing golden-brown color. If you'd like to stay in the know on the bourbon's official release, visit brothersbondbourbon.com and sign up for updates.

'vampire diaries' actors on their new bourbon brand: 'our soul is in this bottle'.

For actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, the reason for launching their own bourbon brand is personal. The two have been good friends since playing brothers on “The Vampire Diaries.” Even though it’s been four years since the popular CW series wrapped, the co-stars remain close — so close, that they co-created an alcohol brand called Brother’s Bond Bourbon.

“We drank bourbon on the show,” Wesley told Yahoo Finance Live. “Ian and I drank bourbon offscreen when we finished work. We fell in love with bourbon. We shot the show in the South, and so, this is extremely organic to us. And it's just — it's something that just makes perfect sense."

Somerhalder added, “This [bourbon] was over 10 years in the making. This guy and I spent so many hundreds — well, thousands and thousands of hours on the set together. And this is the most authentic thing that we can think of doing. Our soul is in this bottle.”

When the bourbon launched in May it sold out online within days. Since then, Somerhalder says they have sold 50,000 cases of the four-grain straight bourbon whiskey which retails for $39.99 and is sold online and in major chains including Albertsons (ACI) , Trader Joe’s and Walmart (WMT) .

Wesley said the two had “a lot of time on our hands” during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to put their business plan into action.

“I mean, obviously, it was a horrible time, but at the same time, it forced us to sit in our homes, get on our Zooms, talk every single day, and develop this product. Ian and I live close to one another," said Wesley. "So I went to Ian's. We blended this bourbon together in his living room.”

There’s certainly no shortage of celebrity-owned alcohol brands: There’s Ryan Reynold’s Aviation American Gin and George Clooney’s Casamigo’s Tequila — both brands are now owned by drinks giant Diageo (DEO) . There’s also Brian Cranston and Paul Aaron’s Dos Hombres Mezcal, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Teremana Tequila, Matthew McConaughey’s Longbranch Whiskey, Post Malone’s Maison No. 9, well… you get the idea.

“First of all, let me set the record straight,” said Somerhalder. “We do everything in our power not to call one another or refer to ourselves as celebrities.”

Wesley added, “Most people — and I'm not saying specific names or anything, but most people will slap their names on a bottle and sell a product that they really have no part in developing. Everything you see here, from the label to the name, to what’s inside, to the bottle, was designed by Ian and myself and our team. And so for us, this is extremely organic.”

The pair’s “passion project” is also about giving back with an eye toward sustainability. The brand donates a portion of proceeds to regenerative agriculture, and their goal is for the brand to be carbon negative.

“The future of business are the companies with triple bottom lines,” said Somerhalder. “People, planet, profit— end of story, right? We obviously know scientifically regenerative agriculture can stop climate change in its tracks, so we are doubling down and putting our money where our mouth is... We are an agricultural company. And we are going to make sure that we invest heavily, heavily, heavily in regenerative ag[riculture] by sequestering enormous amounts of carbon dioxide and storing it safely back in the ground where it belongs.”

Somerhalder explained how the label, which features two men sitting under a tree, is “super symbolic.”

“The brother's bond is the anchor that holds this big, you know, organic structure in between the boys. They have the ability to be safe and look out and have perspective," he said. "These are the grains actually built in, you know, the corn, wheat, barley, and rye, built into the tree. And the birds signify nature and freedom."

“And the tree is an oak tree,” added Wesley, “and as we all know, bourbon is aged in oak barrels. So everything has a meaning and a significance.”

‘The Vampire Diaries’ Stars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley Add 2 Whiskeys to Brother’s Bond Repertoire

Brother's Bond

Brother’s Bond Bourbon has launched two new whiskeys: a cask-strength bourbon and a blended rye.

On Monday, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, actors who co-starred on the popular TV series “The Vampire Diaries” and went on to co-found Brother’s Bond Bourbon , unveiled two new whiskeys.

The new Brother’s Bond expressions are Brother’s Bond Cask Strength and Brother’s Bond American Blended Rye.

“We’ve been dedicated to the growth of Brother’s Bond Bourbon since its inception, and the new release of our Cask Strength and launch of our Rye Whiskey is proof that we’ve established our place in the industry and can compete with top distillers,” Wesley said in a news release .

Sourced from MGP in Indiana, the cask-strength bourbon and blended rye are bottled at 57.5% ABV and 47.5% ABV, respectively.

Both whiskeys are available online and at select retailers nationwide. Brother’s Bond Cask Strength has a suggested retail price of $84.99, while Brother’s Bond American Blended Rye is priced at $59.99.

“We’ve put a great deal of passion and hard work into the expansion of our portfolio, so we hope anyone having our whiskey loves the new Rye and Cask Strength as much as we do,” Somerhalder said. “As we were hand selecting the three unique mash bills, we wanted to push the limits with more robust and dynamic flavors and match the richness of our Original Cask Strength bourbon. We also knew that we had to create a rye like no other that will continue to develop consumer palates as they dive deeper into the whiskey world.”

Brother’s Bond Cask Strength Bourbon earned a Double Gold Medal at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

'Vampire Diaries' star Ian Somerhalder posts video from Jungle Jim's

vampire diaries bourbon tour

Ian Somerhalder , star of the teen drama series "The Vampire Diaries" , recently paid a visit to Greater Cincinnati.

The 45-year-old actor posted a video from the Jungle Jim's in Eastgate on Thursday, April 4, to show off the signed bottles of Brother's Bond Bourbon – a brand he launched alongside "Vampire Diaries" co-star Paul Wesley in 2020.

"Good morning, Ohio. I'm here at Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati, Eastgate ... I'm so excited to be here. Get in here, they're gonna go fast," Somerhalder said on his Instagram Story, gesturing toward the signed bottles.

Facebook user and "Vampire Diaries" super fan Chrissy Rohling went straight to the international market to snag a signed bottle, she documented in a post Thursday.

"'The Vampire Diaries' is my favorite show of all time. I have watched since I was 13 and rewatched over 5 times. I started crying when I saw there was still signed bottles," Rohling wrote.

Somerhalder, a father of two and husband to "Twilight" actor Nikki Reed, stated earlier this year he has taken a step back from acting.

"I loved what I did for a really long time, but I don't miss any of it," Somerhalder said during  an E! News red carpet interview for his  new  documentary "Common Ground."

Somerhalder and Reed now live on a California farm and have said they stay busy with business ventures.
