A unique experience at the origins of L’Occitane en Provence.
In the Provence, nature provides us with all its qualities for the care of our skin. L’Occitane en Provence opens the doors of its gardens and factory to you in order to share this knowledge. It is located in Manosque , on the banks of the Durance, in this natural setting that has charmed the most famous writers. Come and discover all the secrets of oils, elixirs and ointments in a three-step tour .
First of all, the factory. Thanks to a guided tour through the laboratories, the production workshop, and the product packaging area, discover in all transparency the manufacturing processes of the famous treatments. You will enjoy an exciting itinerary, punctuated by sensory activities, to progress on the path of beauty inspired by nature.
Then you will continue your visit in the direction of the museum. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, discover the major stages that have led L’Occitane en Provence since 1976 to make “beauty, an art of living”. Guided tours of the museum are available on request all year round, in French or English.
And finally, the garden! Escape for a walk among the wild species cultivated in this superb Mediterranean garden. Let each of your senses take you through the riches of this land that are the original inspiration for the beauty products of Occitane in Provence. Once again, a guided tour is available on request.
Discover Provence of L’Occitane during your visit to France!
With his passion for his native land and rich in knowledge of the plants that grow there, it was at the age of 23 that Olivier Baussan began to travel the markets of Provence to sell his rosemary essential oil. Distilled thanks to its old still, this essential oil today symbolizes the beginnings of a great adventure that would later be called L’Occitane en Provence.
You can follow in the footsteps of this pioneer of natural care “made in Provence” through many hikes or car trips. You will thus discover the places where the ingredients for beauty products come from.
For example, the lavender route of the Valensole plateau will offer you, from mid-June to mid-July, unforgettable landscapes of lavender oceans under a clear blue sky with heady scents. Don’t miss the markets of Gréoux-Les-Bains and Forcalquier to feel the inspiring spirit of L’Occitane.
Many hikes in the Gorges du Verdon will also give you the chance to discover the essences used for essential oils in their natural setting. An excellent hobby during a walk with children ! Try to recognize the cadets or almond trees, for example, in a breathtaking setting. To find hiking ideas adapted to your desires, find good advice on our Verdon Secret website!
The brand favors traceability and short circuits by trading with local producers. It announces strong respect for the environment and shows concern for the survival of species and ecosystems. The creation of these beauty products has never been elsewhere. Indeed, we find lavender and almonds of unequaled quality only in Provence.
Where is the factory of L’Occitane in Provence and how can I visit it?
Provence and the Riviera are well known with cities like Marseille, Aix en Provence or Nice. We are here a little further north, about an hour and a half from Marseille and two hours from Nice . In France, the distances are short. You may be thinking of visiting L’Occitane in Provence and making a round trip in one day from Marseille or Nice. Let me tell you that this would be a mistake! You will pass by one of the most beautiful tourist sites in France .
The Valensole plateau with its lavender fields
First of all, the most beautiful lavender fields are located 20 minutes from L’Occitane. During the flowering season (between June 20 and July 20), it is essential to visit the Valensole plateau. Fields of lavender as far as the eye can see under the azure blue sky of Haute Provence! We offer tours of lavender fields with commentary in English, or even in Chinese: do not hesitate to contact us. Finally, less than an hour away, you can discover the superb Gorges du Verdon.
The Gorges du Verdon, the largest canyon in Europe
While continuing your journey towards Moustiers Sainte-Marie , discover the Gorges du Verdon . Lakes St. Croix and Esparron are about 30 kilometers apart. A link on our map will allow you to better locate yourself in order to prepare your visit. The Gorges du Verdon can be visited by electric boat , canoe or even on foot. Hiking trails and swimming spots make it a paradise region still little known. Continue your visit on our Verdon Secret website and do not hesitate to contact us.
Where to sleep during your visit to L’Occitane in Provence?
If you are looking for a luxury hotel nearby, the Convent of the Minimes in Mane is about 30 minutes away. Always 30 minutes away, the Bastide de Moustiers is an absolute must. Our website offers a complete article on the hotels of the Verdon. Closer to Gréoux Les Bains , Hôtel des Alpes offers around twenty completely renovated rooms. Its restaurant and swimming pool will not disappoint you. For groups, we offer visit programs to be consulted on our website in the group section.

L’Occitane en Provence Factory Tour
With a cold wind nipping at our faces we took refuge at the L’Occitane en Provence factory tour assuming it would be inside and provide us shelter from the cold. It turned out to be fun for the whole family. The boys were endlessly amused by the machinery, Jeff was enthralled by the company’s inner workings and I was in love with one of my favorite brands. L’Occitane factory tour for the win!
L’Occitane makes all its products, with the exception of the soap, at this factory in Provence. The L’Occitane factory has been continuously expanded to meet their growing market demand. Just take a moment to think about how every hand cream or hotel shampoo bearing the L’Occitane label emerges from this small-ish factory in Provence. It is a sight to see.
Free guided tours of the L’Occitane factory are conducted 7 days a week but reservations are required. You’ll need to book your English language factory tour well in advance. You cannot show up and get a tour. When we called there was only one English tour available for the week of our visit. There are no photos allowed on the tour.
The tour starts outside the museum and leads you into the factory. You peer down on the factory floor from windows while the tour guide tells you what is going on. The tour is dynamic so you will spend more time at rooms with things happening, only pausing at empty rooms. Strollers are easily accommodated on the tour.
You make a brief stop to try out some of the products. You’ll also learn about L’Occitane’s product sourcing and charity efforts in which they are involved.
At the conclusion of the L’Occitane factory tour you are given a small hand cream and dropped off at the store to browse. The store has all their products and is fun to browse. You can sample all the hand creams and smell all the lotions.
If you don’t have a factory tour and still want to stop by there is a small museum you can browse along with a garden you are free to enjoy. Unless you were close or a huge L’Occitane fan, it’s not worth it to stop by unless you have the tour. You will find L’Occitane stores in every town in Provence with similar offerings. If however you can book yourself on a tour this is a great way to learn the story of L’Occitane and see the factory at work.

L’Occitane a source of Beauty
Inspiration
Provence Shopping and French Savoir Faire Well-being Nature and Outdoor Activities
Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 January 2023, updated on 24 April 2024
With lush landscapes of lavender and verdant verbena, Provence is home to many healing ingredients found in the products of L’Occitane.
The South of France region, Provence is the home of L'Occitane
The region’s cherished lavender oil has lent its seductive scent to L’Occitane’s lush lotions, soaps and oils since the very early days of L’Occitane back in 1976. Almond oil extracted from locally grown almonds has softened and soothed bodies around the world. Precious scents enhanced from local rose extract have found their way from Provence into the suitcases and homes of millions, across 59 countries today.
While L’Occitane and the wealth of healing plants picked in Provence has left a lasting impression in the lives of beauty lovers, it’s a company that is walking ever lightly on the earth. Traceability of its harvested healing plants is paramount - L’Occitane personally knows its 48 direct producers and the exact plots of land where they grow their beautiful ingredients. “ This ensures the plants we use can be cultivated and harvested in ways that are not harmful to the environment or biodiversity ”, says Jean- Charles Lhommet , Sustainability and Biodiversity Manager.
Local co-ops are L’Occitane’s exclusive source of lavender, helping local farmers to thrive. Supporting local almond production is another goal, one L’Occitane shares with France Amande, an initiative supported across the almond industry (L’Occitane was a founding member). Already, 80 hectares , or around 20,000 trees , have been planted successfully, in conjunction with L’Occitane’s producer Jean-Pierre Jaubert.
To fight against lavender decline (due to climate change, and an insect that thrives in hot weather), L’Occitane supports research institutes such as CRIEPPAM, which is looking for new ways to cultivate lavender or find more resistant varieties.
Fair trade in focus for L'Occitane
With an estimated 400 farms closing weekly in France, L’Occitane is seeking to counter the trend by establishing Fair Trade Certification with all their iconic ingredients by 2025. With 48 direct producers and 10,000-plus pickers , it will make a big difference to local landscapes and economies it supports. “ Sourcing natural ingredients in accordance with Fair Trade principles means paying a fair price, ensuring value is distributed fairly amongst those involved ,” Lhommet explains.
Making haste to reduce waste
L’Occitane was asking customers to return their glass bottles for recycling long before recycling was du jour (in fact, back in 1976). More recently, rounding out L’Occitane’s recycling program are eco refills, eco packaging (reduced material thickness) in-store recycling and 100% recyclable bottles . Shampoo and shower gel fountains are now being tested in Spain and Germany.
These eco-refills use 90% less plastic than a regular bottle and are currently available across 17 of the brand’s product lines (soon to be 25 by the end of 2025). Additionally, roughly 200 tonnes of plastic are spared from the environment every single year as a result.
Working for Women
For products that can’t be sourced locally, L’Occitane offers transparent and ethical supplier relationships. Shea butter is a key ingredient in more than 50 L’Occitane face, hand and body products, such as its well-known Shea Butter Hand Cream. This ingredient is purchased from women’s co-operatives in Burkino Faso, ensuring traditional production skills are maintained. Shea butter, termed “women’s gold” in Burkino Faso, ensures a precious source of revenue for the women involved in its collection and production. Fair trade certification costs associated with shea butter were covered and technical support provided.
Since the 1980s L’Occitane has been developing women’s empowerment, to improve women’s economic and social status . It began with a 100% certified Fair Trade supply chain and continues with the L’Occitane Foundation (now running for 14 years). Today its goal is supporting 33,000-plus women by building upon the fair trade partnership and with initiatives to promote entrepreneurship and girls’ education.

Must do: l’occitane en provence factory tour.
For any skincare lover, one of my must-do’s if you’re headed to the South of France is to visit the L’Occitane En Provence factory . Located in the Manosque region of Provence the location is home to the skincare brand’s factory, museum and garden. It also houses the factory store where visitors can enjoy a 10% off discount on all products.
The tour, which is FREE! lasts an hour offers a behind the scenes look at how the products are formulated, developed and packaged with tours of the factory and informative quick videos on the benefits of the plants used and sustainable practices, some of the history as well as the brands commitment to the environment and their communities.
Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean cultures, Olivier Baussan started L’Occitane in Provence in 1976 creating high quality skincare products and fragrances that were natural and effective. Also very important to the brand is the tractability of the ingredients knowing where all the raw materials come from and the handling.

L'OCCITANE en Provence, Laboratoires M&L
Handling the formulation and production of natural cosmetics for L’OCCITANE Group, Laboratoires M&L – L'OCCITANE en Provence embraces simulation and virtual twins on 3D EXPERIENCE to run efficient and sustainable production facilities that prioritize workers’ health and safety.
Smart and safe factory for unique cosmetics experiences
Even from its wooden façade exterior, it’s clear that the production facility of L'OCCITANE en Provence – Laboratoires M&L set in Lagorce, France, is no ordinary factory. Set among the wilderness of the Ardèche region, this is a factory designed to blend into the surrounding environment and co-exist with nature.
Responsible for producing natural cosmetics, oils and fragrances for L’OCCITANE Group brands L’OCCITANE and Melvita, the facility has 1,800 m² of green roofing, 12 light wells, 80 m² of solar panels for preheating water and 10,000 m² of Finnish willow trees to cleanse production sewage after processing by its wastewater treatment plant. It also has more than 4,500 m² of photovoltaic panels, which produce enough electricity for up to 25% of the site's needs, targeting 90% by 2030. Inside, workstations are configured to promote good posture and comfort for each individual operator, and digital technologies simulate shop floor conditions to prioritize worker safety.
For a company that prides itself on carefully sourcing and creating some of the most sustainable and natural cosmetic products on the market, it’s fitting that Laboratoires M&L puts the well-being of its people first too. “It’s essential to have our employees work in a safe, comfortable, inclusive and diverse environment so that this can shine through internally and externally,” said Richard Vinardi, industrial strategies director at Laboratoires M&L, L’OCCITANE Group.
The virtual twin allowed us to evaluate situations that cannot be observed in everyday life
Driving Laboratoires M&L’s proactive health and safety policy is an initiative called MyHealth@Work – in which Dassault Systèmes contributes with the 3D EXPERIENCE Cloud platform to develop a virtual twin of the Lagorce facility and its production lines to monitor and prevent occupational health hazards. With over 200 employees working at the Lagorce site, composed of 60% women and 40% men, all of various ages, the company wanted to assess individual postures at workstations to determine the risk of joint or musculoskeletal issues and understand how different genders could be affected.
“MyHealth@Work aims to evaluate work areas, especially ergonomic postures at workstations and on packaging lines,” said Maxime Plazolles, innovation engineering project manager at Laboratoires M&L, L’OCCITANE Group. “We started from simple observations: the increase in illnesses and reported issues related to discomfort on packaging lines. We then screened a wide range of postures according to population percentiles. The virtual twin allowed us to evaluate situations that cannot be observed in everyday life.”
Virtual twin on the shop floor and beyond
What began as a standalone proof of concept (POC) – a project to simulate workstations and prevent the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders among staff members – has since evolved into an exciting partnership between Laboratoires M&L and Dassault Systèmes. Together, they are exploring how else virtual twins can be used to enhance staff well-being and improve operational efficiencies.
“We ended up scanning the entire plant, because we realized that the solution offered real evolutionary power, which could allow us to invest in new lines, but also to ensure that, when purchasing new lines, we were closer to getting it right the first time, which is ultra-important in our sector,” Plazolles said. “It’s a partnership which allows us to generate knowledge, develop skills and benefit from emerging technologies in a pioneering way and identify areas of value.”
The vision for Laboratoires M&L’s Lagorce site is to create a new local industrial model to connect people, performance and nature.
“In this vision, we have people at the center of what we do, and for them we have an ambition for zero accidents on site,” said Aurélie Declef, Lagorce plant director at Laboratoires M&L, L’OCCITANE Group. “For us, zero accident is a choice, not a chance.”
Understanding pathogen transmission
A great example of MyHealth@Work in action was when Laboratoires M&L wanted to better understand the spread of the viruses and determine how to better protect its workers and maintain high productivity levels on the production line. Dassault Systèmes was tasked with simulating the scenarios.
Laboratoires M&L provided 3D models of the facility’s architecture and the Dassault Systèmes team computed airflow data – air renewal, air recirculation, outside air supply, and air outflow. This was used to create a virtual twin of the full shop floor to run airflow and pathogenic propagation scenario simulations of the packaging line using DELMIA and SIMULIA fluids solutions .
“Thanks to SIMULIA PowerFlow, we have been able to make visible the invisible,” Plazolles said.
As a result of the simulations, the company discovered there were measures it could put in place to protect its workers, including repositioning air vents to avoid creating zones that are less ventilated than others.
“We also discovered that the plexiglass screens we’d installed on the shop floor were not as effective as masks for protecting workers,” Plazolles said. “This kind of data can be fully capitalized on for the new lines we may purchase in future.”
Simulating thermal flows
In combination with pathogen circulation, Laboratoires M&L wanted to understand the thermal conditions of the Lagorce facility, particularly how much certain areas of the shop floor heated up during specific periods. Workers reported times when they were too warm and Laboratoires M&L felt there were steps it could take to improve their comfort.
“The goal was to understand increases in temperature, how heat is generated, and where from,” Plazolles said.
Again, using the same virtual twin of the shop floor, the Dassault Systèmes team carried out thermal simulations of the environment, covering equipment like small conveyor motors, which radiate heat. SIMULIA fluids solutions enabled the team to simulate production scenarios at different times of the day to determine which areas of the shop floor radiated heat and were exposed to sunlight, and how it affected the comfort of the operators during hot, summer days.
“SIMULIA enabled us to question the temperature settings of the area, taking into account solar radiation, so that temperature rises can be controlled right to the edge of a room,” Plazolles said. “It would have been so complicated to measure this in the real world. Yet with the virtual twin and the simulations, we could visualize these scenarios and understand what was happening.”
Laboratoires M&L sees benefit in simulating conditions in advance before making changes.
“In the future, we also see the value of carrying out noise simulations, especially in areas where earplugs are compulsory, and seeing the relationship between thermal and aeraulic systems,” Plazolles said.
Why outsourcing made sense
Outsourcing these kinds of projects to Dassault Systèmes and taking advantage of the Virtual Twin as a Service approach was a win-win for Laboratoires M&L.
“We realize that the 3D EXPERIENCE platform requires expertise to be used to its full advantage,” Plazolles said. “This activity is not our core business. However, it's Dassault Systèmes’. Outsourcing to its teams enables us to carry out several projects at the same time. They work to our schedules and allow us to test new technologies.”
Through this partnership, Laboratoires M&L has the opportunity to try out emerging technologies and provide input to get the desired outcome. The partnership also allows the company to quickly scale up, bring in additional resources when needed to keep projects on track, and bring transformational benefits to the organization.
“I can detach and dedicate tasks to the Dassault Systèmes teams to expand my bandwidth and get faster results,” Vinardi said. “We also benefit from expertise that we don't necessarily have internally. The teams we worked with were able to enrich the projects, adding value through their experiences from other sectors and partnerships.”
While the company recognizes that this type of arrangement is not commonplace in its industry, it believes that outsourcing specific IT projects is the way forward.
“This approach allows us to gradually get our feet wet without the need to develop this type of skill in house with all the associated infrastructure,” Plazolles said. “We’ve become a hybrid organization that moves ahead and pursues digital innovation while controlling costs.”
And because all these digital projects are handled in the cloud, Laboratoires M&L benefits from round-the-clock access and all the collaboration benefits that come from working in a centralized, online environment.
“Internally, we are based on several different sites,” Plazolles said. “The 3D EXPERIENCE Cloud platform enables us to exchange messages, share documents, and benefit from content and deliverables in the cloud. It also allows us to easily work with Dassault Systèmes. Ultimately, everything converges on the platform.”
Evaluating production lines virtually
Laboratoires M&L is now looking at how it can use the 3D EXPERIENCE Cloud platform, virtual reality and Dassault Systèmes’ simulation services to optimize the setup of its production lines.
“Before, when we bought a packaging line, there were a lot of things that we discovered as we went along,” Plazolles said. “Ramp-up phases could last from 6 to 18 months. The objective is to reduce these ramp-up phases, and to quickly increase throughput using immersion in virtual reality to anticipate what we call clashes – blocking points, safety and environmental issues.”
“By virtually simulating real future situations and involving operational staff as well as stakeholders, we can identify situations that would only have been observed after the project was completed,” Vinardi added.
Today, Laboratoires M&L can use the simulations to determine when it needs to buy new equipment, but also how to integrate new production lines into its manufacturing facilities.
“We have just invested in a new tube line,” Declef said. “With Dassault Systèmes, we created an immersive experience using virtual reality allowing operators to project themselves in the future of this new line, and ensure that the workstations are set up according to their feedback.”
Staying on task in production
Laboratories M&L has used DELMIA since 2013 to manage its production and procurement flows. Over the years, the solution has helped the company to optimize its production and logistics processes at all levels.
“DELMIA brought a great deal of discipline, traceability and organization to production,” Plazolles said. “It has really enabled us to increase output and better organize ourselves.”
When the company sought to improve collaboration and transform its meetings and follow-up processes on the shop floor it made sense to try out DELMIA 3DLean functionality. The production teams use the digital visual management dashboard and shared environment on the cloud to support their meetings, share daily tasks and make informed decisions.
“Before, we had several whiteboards, which workers referred to every day to carry out their roles,” Plazolles said. “3DLean allows us to manage these tasks on digital screens, and give team managers, activity managers and manufacturing operators a clear view of what’s happening.”
DELMIA 3DLean not only helps to improve communication between different teams, but also shares information in more intuitive and accessible ways.
“It helps us respond to different issues and improve scheduling,” Plazolles said. “Work instructions are given to the right people and we can see a live visualization of each worker’s location. We already have field managers directly controlling production with this solution and achieving great results.”
Building a healthy sustainable workplace
Laboratoires M&L takes its role as a steward of the planet seriously and believes digital technologies unlock many opportunities to further reduce the company’s environmental impact across the value chain.
“The long-term opportunities of digital solutions, especially of virtual twins, are very clearly to accelerate our ecological transition and maximize energy efficiency opportunities,” Vinardi said.
“I am firmly convinced that we can generate real value in other fields such as AI, formulation, task automation, supply chain and lifecycle analysis,” Plazolles added. “For example, to measure the ecological and environmental impact of a product, to decide whether to use a particular packaging line or another to mitigate its carbon impact. In the future, we might qualify and simulate the entire energy consumption of a building to better identify the opportunities to reduce it.”
Working with Dassault Systèmes, Laboratoires M&L is able to continue focusing on its own decarbonization and biodiversity initiatives, while building its digital capabilities to achieve positive, meaningful change. “Ultimately, we’ve found value, efficiency and opportunities for a cleaner, greener future,” Plazolles concluded. “The partnership gives us reliable, robust results. It will help us to write a new chapter in the history of Laboratoires M&L for the L’OCCITANE Group.”

00:00 – 00:17
Aurélie Declef, Site Director, Lagorce, Laboratoires M&L, L’OCCITANE Group:
The Lagorce factory aims to drive a new industrial model connecting People, Nature and Performance, with an ambition for zero accidents.
00:18 – 00:23
Richard Vinardi, Industrial Strategies Director, Laboratoires M&L, L’OCCITANE Group:
For us, the most important point is the health and safety of our employees in the workplace.
00:24 – 00:38
Maxime Plazolles, Engineering and Innovation Project Manager, Laboratoires M&L, L’OCCITANE Group:
In light of this observation, let's look for complementary, technological, emerging tools that would allow us to fully embrace it.
00:39 – 00:59
Aurélie Declef:
At Lagorce factory, we manufacture jars and tubes for the two brands L'OCCITANE en Provence and Melvita. That's about 100 million units per year, with 200 employees working on site to produce them. The main issues that can occur on our production lines relate to body movements and postures, to repetitive gestures and workstation ergonomics.
01:00 – 01:11
Maxime Plazolles:
We wanted to make sure that employees have good working conditions. Dassault Systèmes offers the technology to address the issue of employee health and well-being on the production lines.
01:12 – 01:18
Richard Vinardi:
So we used the virtual twin to better assess situations that we cannot observe on a daily basis.
01:19 – 01:32
Maxime Plazolles:
We ended up with a digital model of the line. We shared it through the cloud on the 3D EXPERIENCE platform. We simulated all the aeraulic flows of the packaging lines, and pathogens’ spread around three operators.
01:33 – 01:47
Aurélie Declef:
We have just invested in a new tube manufacturing line. We used virtual reality to immerse ourselves in this future new production line and ensure that the workstation will comply with the teams’ feedback.
01:48 – 01:59
Today, when we manufacture at different production rates, what is the thermal comfort we can have on the lines? The benefit of simulation is to identify hot spots and take care of them.
02:00 – 02:07
Richard Vinardi:
The long-term opportunities of digital solutions, and especially of the digital twin, clearly are to accelerate our ecological transition.
02:08 – 02:23
And it's true that in the future, we can consider qualifying and simulating the energy consumption of a building or a factory at a specific peak, to be able to pinpoint which levers are relevant to better orchestrate and manage the site's energy consumption.
02:24 – 02:47
What would I like people to remember? That we are a pioneer in using digital technology, and the first Laboratoires M&L site to be digitally connected.

L’Occitane Is Going Private. Here’s Why.
- Daniela Morosini
Key insights
- The company has announced a privatisation offer with funding provided by Blackstone and Goldman Sachs.
- L’Occitane’s recent efforts to improve growth have represented heavy operational expenditures, which has undercut its stock price.
- As a private company, L’Occitane may be more able to achieve its longer-term goals like revitalising its core brands, and eventually, setting it up for a future relisting or a different kind of sale.
A new era of L’Occitane is upon us.
The company — which has been listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange since 2010 — announced a privatisation offer on April 29, with Blackstone and Goldman Sachs providing funding for a $1.8 billion take-private transaction that values the company at $6.4 billion.
The offer follows months of speculation: In August 2023, reports surfaced that Reinold Geiger, the company’s chair and majority shareholder, was considering a buyout with shares being temporarily halted from trading as a result – on announcing those plans were shelved, its share price dropped 30 percent. Shares were halted indefinitely on Apr. 9, following a Bloomberg report that privatisation was again imminent.
Often, companies spend years preparing for an initial public offering, as becoming a public company means punching in a heavier weight class. But L’Occitane’s hands have become tied with limited growth opportunities. In a statement, Geiger said, “The transaction we are launching today will enable us to focus on rebuilding the foundation for the long-term sustainable growth of our company.” Privatising now is indicative of a different kind of growing pains.

“Management is a bit fed up with their low valuation in the Hong Kong market,” said Ivan Su, a senior equity analyst at investment firm Morningstar.
The Hong Kong stock exchange was seen as a lucrative option for global companies in the early 2010s when the Chinese consumer was rapidly gaining wealth — and an appetite for luxury goods to go with it. But the market hasn’t lived up to expectations in the long term. Firms like Samsonite, Prada and L’Occitane are what Erwan Rambourg, a managing director in HSBC’s consumer practice, referred to as “orphan stocks.” The former two companies have announced plans to get out of the exchange or add a secondary listing somewhere else.
Beauty conglomerates listed on the New York or Paris stock exchanges often enjoy higher valuations — in Hong Kong, the standard price to earnings multiple is around nine, said Su, while in the US, it’s often higher than 20. Beauty companies like Estée Lauder and L’Oréal enjoy PE multiples around 30 to 50, while L’Occitane’s has historically been between in the high teens to low twenties, though the news of a possible takeover caused its share price to skyrocket before trading was halted. Geiger’s offer of $34 HKD ($4.30) a share is a 61 percent premium on its average closing price.
“[Geiger] must think, “I have a great company with good growth and good margins,” and relates more to a [Estée] Lauder or Beiersdorf … In some cases, [L’Occitane] has higher margins and better growth,” said Rambourg.
Peer Pressure
L’Occitane’s issues go beyond its trading locale. The company’s strategic plans are increasingly at odds with shareholders’ expectation for quarterly revenue increases and dividends. Su said the company might simply wish to rid itself of these external controls.
Public investors haven’t taken kindly to its growth plans. In June 2023, the company announced an investment of €100 million ($106 million) into marketing efforts in order to revive some of its core brands like L’Occitane en Provence and Elemis. Its stock price slid some 15 percent. Analysts often view large marketing expenditures as a black hole, said Bill Detwiler, co-founder and managing partner of investment firm Fernbrook, especially if efforts are directed to platforms like Facebook and Instagram, which both offer unpredictable returns on investment.
The other key difference L’Occitane has is its unusually large store footprint, mainly for its core brand L’Occitane en Provence. The body care brand operates more than 2,000 storefronts worldwide. Most other beauty conglomerates rely heavily on wholesale, selling their brands through the likes of Sephora or in department stores.
“You’re paying rent and paying staff like Louis Vuitton, but you’re not selling a $1,500 handbag; you’re selling $29 shea butter hand cream,” said Rambourg, adding that the volume needed to turn a profit is enormous. “Selling beauty [in standalone] retail has never been an easy task.”
L’Occitane’s leadership may wish to reduce the number of stores to improve margins, remove poorer-performing products, or even cull brands. Earlier this month, it shed skincare brand Grown Alchemist , selling the majority share to outgoing chief executive, André Hoffman.
The Size of the Prize
L’Occitane does have growth potential. Unlike some of its peers that have opted for a selective mergers and acquisition strategy – Estée Lauder prefers premium brands, L’Oréal has focused lately on dermatologist-led skincare and prestige perfume — L’Occitane’s approach has been scattergun. While it’s had a slant towards brands with natural credentials, its portfolio is mixed across skincare, cosmetics and hair care. Some acquisitions like Sol de Janiero, which it acquired in 2021, have provided stellar growth. In the nine months leading up to 31 Dec. 2023, sales grew by 184 percent, led by viral products and wild popularity with Gen-Z and Gen Alpha. The brand is expected to reach $1 billion in sales in the full fiscal year .
But not all new acquisitions have been hits. Other lines like Melvita and Erborian, which it groups together, are a small part of its overall sales.
As a private company, it could make unencumbered decisions when it comes to M&A; whether that’s divesting brands or acquiring others to balance out Sol de Janiero’s astronomical growth. Rambourg described Sol de Janiero as a “homerun,” but its future as a leader in body care and fragrance is threatened by more brands climbing into these categories. Any future softness in the appeal of influencer marketing could also undercut its success.
A Private Affair
L’Occitane’s ownership profile is somewhat irregular for a public company. More than 70 percent of it is owned by Geiger; the families at the helm of Estée Lauder and L’Oréal own 38 percent and 35 percent, respectively. Its unique profile might be part of what makes it appealing to a private equity buyer, said Detwiler.
“Private equity firms love partnering with essentially family-owned businesses, or families not getting any benefit from being public,” Detwiler said. Linking up with a firm like Blackstone makes for a good fit, as it has global reach and previous success with beauty and personal care. The fund owns sunscreen line Supergoop and clinical skincare line Zo Skin Health.
Other firms have made the switch. In 2008, after 24 years on the Parisian stock market, Clarins reprivatised to become a fully family-owned company again. Since then, it’s expanded greatly: adding makeup, men’s and luxury lines, as well as opening directly-operated stores, a glitzy office tower near Paris and a research and development centre in Shanghai. It’s also made investments in skincare line Pai and the clean makeup brand Ilia. (Clarins’ example may be top of mind, as the group used to be an investor in L’Occitane from 2001 to 2011.)
The road ahead for L’Occitane likely requires some course-correction. In order to revive its core properties, strategic shifts are needed, which could include discontinuing product lines, investing in new product development and more marketing. While L’Occitane en Provence is making great inroads in China and has growth potential in Asia, it’s seen as “a bit dusty” in Europe, said Rambourg. With around $156 million in cash, the company could need a capital injection to achieve these goals.
More rockstar brands are needed to help reduce reliance on Sol de Janiero, and future-proof the company against shifts in consumer tastes and preferences. As Detwiler noted, private equity firms are always interested in companies that support further acquisitions.
Even with an offer on the table, whatever L’Occitane’s ultimate strategy is, it likely won’t unfold rapidly. ‘[Geiger] is not about getting a quick return. He’s obsessed about doing the right thing for the long term,” said Rambourg.
