Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream

Overall, the Visitor (subclass 600) visa is for tourists, people who wish to visit their family in Australia, and people who wish to visit Australia for business purposes.

The Visitor (subclass 600) visa is divided into 5 different streams:

Each different stream has different eligibility criteria. You need to know which stream to apply for, depending on the reasons for, and the circumstances surrounding, your visit to Australia.

The Department of Home Affairs will only decide your Visitor (subclass 600) visa application based on the eligibility criteria of the selected stream. You will not be considered for another stream. For example, if you don’t meet the eligibility requirements of the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Sponsored Family Stream, no other stream will be considered, and the visa application will simply be refused.

Therefore, you must be careful about which stream you lodge your Visitor (subclass 600) visa in.

If you wish to visit Australia for tourism purposes, or to see an Australian citizen or permanent resident who is your parent, spouse, de facto partner, child, brother or sister, the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream may be an option for you.

You could also apply for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream if you wish to:

• Visit friends, or other relatives,
• Study for less than 3 months, or
• Stay in Australia for more than 3 months.

However, you will not be eligible for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream if the visit is for:

• Business purposes, or
• Medical treatment.

Can I apply for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream?

You meet the genuine temporary entrant criteria.

Visitor visas are primarily for allowing you to stay in Australia temporarily, for reasons such as:

• Visiting friends and family in Australia;
• Touring Australia;
• Entering Australia for business visitor purposes; and
• Studying for less than three months.

You cannot do the following things while on a Visitor visa:

• Live in Australia long-term; or
• Study for more than three months.

Therefore, the Visitor visa has what is called Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. The GTE criteria requires the applicant to show that they have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily for the purposes for which the Visitor visa was granted.

The Department of Home Affairs will consider a range of factors to decide whether you are a Genuine Temporary Entrant.

Many Visitor visas are refused on grounds that the applicant did not meet the GTE criteria.

I want to migrate to Australia permanently. Can I apply for a Visitor visa?

You could still be granted a Visitor visa to enter Australia even if you intend to apply for a further visa once arriving onshore, to eventually migrate permanently. An intention to apply for another visa after entering Australia on a Visitor visa does not necessarily disentitle you from lodging, or being granted, a Visitor visa.

For example, you may have already stated an intention to apply for a further visa after arriving in Australia in a previous travel exemption application. You may have already lodged a Partner visa or Work visa but want to lodge a Visitor visa so that you can enter Australia while it processes.

However, you should be cautious about what you write in your Visitor visa application. You will need to use specific language that carefully addresses the GTE criteria, to ensure that your Visitor visa application is not refused.

Whether you are in Australia or located in another country, the process is the same.

• Go to the official Australian ImmiAccount page and set up a log in.
• Fill out all the required information and provide all the documents asked for.
• Submit the application and pay the required fees. If you do not provide all the information required, your visa may be denied or the processing time may be greatly increased.
• You may be asked to supply biometrics at a local processing centre in your home country.

Eligibility criteria and visa conditions

The list of criteria are short, compared to other visa types. You must:

• intend to complete a period of study no longer than three months long
• have adequate health insurance
• have enough money to support your stay

Documents required for visa 600

The Australian immigration authority can request different documents according to the country of origin and the intention of the visitor once in Australia. You may be required to supply:

• a completed application form
• copies of biographical page of passport
• a recent passport-sized photograph with your name written on the back
• details of any name changes
• copy of birth certificate
• proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Australia, such as a bank statement
• proof there is incentive to return to your home country, such as enrolment at school, employment proof, or proof of ownership of assets in your home country
• evidence of enrolment at the learning institution
• evidence of a return flight ticket

How can people transfer from visitor visa 600 to student visa?

Transferring from a visitor visa to a student visa while you are in Australia can be complex pathway. It can only be done if your visitor visa doesn’t have any ‘no further stay’ conditions. Moving from a visitor visa to student visa also increases your chances of your visa application being refused, due to the genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement. The immigration department may claim that the reasons for your education visa are not genuine, and this could be a reason they may decline your student visa application.

For either of these scenarios, you will need to return to your home country and apply for a student visa from there.

If you have condition 8503 applied to your tourist visa conditions, you can apply to have this waived. This condition states that the visa holder will not be entitled to a substantive visa while they remain in Australia. You must satisfy the department that your circumstances have changed, the circumstances were beyond your control, and be compelling.

Alongside the usual student visa requirements, you will be required to prove to the Australian immigration department:

• that your reasons for not studying in your home country are valid
• that you have sufficient reasons to return to your home country once your student visa has expired
• there is no unrest in your home country that could stop you from returning home freely
• there is nothing in your immigration history that indicates your intention to remain in Australia
• the course is valid, relevant, and appropriate to your current education or employment
• that this course will ensure future employment
• that you have complied with all previous and current visa terms, and have the continued intention to comply with the new student visa.

You will be required to prepare a written statement demonstrating your GTE, addressing all the factors above. Evidence of your claims should also be included.

The cost of the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) - Tourist Stream (Apply from Australia) is currently $365AUD and you can stay for up to 12 months. Most processing times are within 26 days. With this visa you can:

visit family or friends

be here as a tourist, for a cruise or for any purpose except business or medical treatment

You can study or train for up to 3 months in total on this visa. But if your main reason for travelling to Australia is study, a student visa might be more appropriate.

You cannot work.

You will need a visa if you enter Australia during a cruise. If your cruise is a round trip cruise, the time you spend on the cruise counts as time spent in Australia - that is, we do not consider you have left Australia. A round trip cruise will not reset your stay period on your visa. Ask your cruise operator or travel agent if we consider your cruise to be a round trip cruise.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE VISITOR VISA (SUBCLASS 600) - TOURIST STREAM (APPLY FROM AUSTRALIA)

To be eligible for the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) - Tourist Stream (Apply from Australia) , you will need to demonstrate that you:

Meet the necessary health requirements.

Meet the necessary character requirements.

Have sufficient funds to cover the costs of your trip.

Be a genuine visitor - This means you have the intention to visit Australia temporarily and only do the things that the visa allows you to do.

BUSINESS VISITOR STREAM

The cost of the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) - Business Visitor Stream is currently $145AUD. You can stay for up to 3 months. Most processing times are within 18 days. With this visa you can:

make general business or employment enquiries

investigate, negotiate, enter into or review a business contract

conduct activities as part of an official government visit

take part in a conference, trade fair or seminar. The organisers can't pay you to take part

You can't:

work for or provide services to a business or organisation based in Australia

sell goods or services directly to the public

If you want to do short-term work in Australia that isn't a business visitor activity, consider applying for a temporary work visa.

APEC Business Travel Card holders

You might not need to apply for a visa to travel to Australia if you hold an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travel Card (ABTC). We consider you to have applied for a Visitor visa when you applied for the ABTC.

ABTC holders (other than New Zealanders) might be granted a Visitor (subclass 600) Business Visitor stream visa to visit Australia.  If you hold an ABTC with ‘AUS’ printed on the back, you can enter Australia for short-stay business visitor or tourism activities for as long as the ABTC is valid. The ABTC is valid for 5 years from the date we issue it.

If you apply for and are granted a separate visa, the visa associated with your ABTC will cease.

This visa stream is part of the visitor visa subclass 600 lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to see family and friends, or for purposes other than business or medical treatment. You must be in Australia at the time of the visa application.

This visa stream lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to see family and friends or for purposes other than business or medical treatment. You must be in Australia at the time of the visa application and when DOHA decides on your application.

Subclass:  600 Visa

Stay Duration:  Up to 12 months

As the visa applicant, you must,

• intend to stay in Australia to visit only
• have enough money for your stay in Australia
• not work in Australia

Eligibility

• If you held a substantive visa when you applied in Australia, that visa must not have been a Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403), Domestic worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream.
• If you did not hold a substantive visa when you applied in Australia, you must meet other criteria.
• Unless there are exceptional circumstances that allow the grant of the visa, DOHA will not grant you this visa if:
• you hold a Visitor visa, Work and Holiday visa, Working Holiday visa or bridging visa, and
• granting you a Tourist visa would result in you staying in Australia for more than 12 consecutive months
• stay only temporarily in Australia
• do only the things the visa allows you to do
• You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.
• It is recommended you take out health insurance to cover any unforeseen medical treatment you might need in Australia. You are personally liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia.
• You must meet all the health and character requirements
• You must not have any debt to pay to the Australian government. If you or any family members (including those who do not apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
• If you are 18 years of age or older, you must: have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia AND confirm you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws when you sign an Australian Values Statement
• It must be in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

Note:  If you have had a visa cancelled or previous application refused, you may not be granted a visa.

• This is a temporary visa. You can stay for the period or dates specified on the visa grant letter. DoHA can grant this visa with one entry or multiple entries. If you are granted a visa with multiple entries, you can leave and re-enter Australia on the visa while it is valid. If your visa is granted with a single entry and you leave Australia, you can’t re-enter on the visa. You have to apply for another visa to come back.
• You can’t include family members in your application. A separate application must be made for each member of your family, including those listed on your passport.
• It is a condition of this visa that you don’t stay in Australia for a total of more than 12 months in 18 months If you currently hold a Visitor visa, a Working Holiday visa, a Work and Holiday visa or a bridging visa, and grant of this visa would mean you stay in Australia for more than 12 consecutive months, you will need to show there are exceptional circumstances.

Tourist visa, subclass 600.

The tourist stream visa – subclass 600 is for those who wish to visit Australia as a tourist, go on a cruise, or see family and friends. It is a temporary visa, and the length of the stay is specified in the visa grant letter. The following things are considered in determining the stay period:

• how long you want to stay
• the reason for your stay in Australia

The visa is granted with either a ‘single’ or ‘multiple entry’ condition. With ‘multiple entry’, you can leave and return to Australia on the visa while it is valid. 

You can study or train for up to 3 months on this visa and are not allowed to work. You can apply for this visa in or outside Australia. You cannot stay in Australia longer by extending this visa and must apply for another visa to extend your stay.

From 21 February 2022, all fully vaccinated travellers are allowed to travel to Australia without a travel exemption. 

Tourist Visa - apply outside Australia

You must be outside Australia when applying for this visa. Also, you must be outside Australia when your visa decision is made. 

Eligibility criteria

• You must be a genuine visitor and intend to stay temporarily in Australia. 
• You must have sufficient finances to support your stay period in Australia.
• You must meet the health requirements. 
• You must meet the character requirements.

You will not be permitted to work while in Australia on this visa. The visa cost is $145 , and the processing time depends on the age of the applicants finalised. 

Tourist Visa - apply in Australia

You must be in Australia when applying for this visa and when the decision is made. 

You will not be permitted to work while in Australia on this visa. The visa cost is $370 , and its processing time can range from 15 days to 11 months, depending on the number of applicants.

• intend to come to Australia to visit only
• have enough money for your stay in Australia
• not work in Australia

• not have had a visa cancelled or an application refused while you were in Australia.
• be outside Australia when you apply and when Australian Department of Home Affairs decide your visa.
