Roast review: wandering goat coffee.

Review by: Sheila Murray

“You have to check out Wandering Goat Coffee!” said my husband, James, on the day he returned from a climbing trip in Red Rocks. He went on to tell me that his friend, Rich, brought Wandering Goat coffee all the way from Oregon to Nevada, so everyone on the trip could enjoy delicious coffee each morning before going out to climb.

wandering goat coffee

Rich has always had great taste, so I knew I had to try Wandering Goat for myself!

Wandering Goat is a locally owned coffee roaster in Eugene, Oregon that provides roast-to-order, 100% certified organic coffee. I appreciate that Wandering Goat doesn’t just throw around words like “sustainable” and “organic” and instead they follow it up with the actual efforts they’ve made to support this commitment. You can learn more about their roastery practices here.

Ethiopia Guji (Natural Processed)

I’m always grateful to try a single origin roast coffee because there is so much depth and complexity of taste to be found in a single origin, as well as rich history. You can find out more about Kayon Mountain Farm, which produces this coffee, right here!

First Impressions

James opened the bag of coffee beans and inhaled the aroma.

“Hmm,” he said, considering, “I am getting marshmallow, citrus, and white chocolate.”

“Wow,” I said laughing, “that’s so specific!”

I smelled the beans but got a very different impression. For me, it was rich and earthy with hints of dried fruit, like raisins. I could see where James had gotten citrus from, as there was something quite uplifting within the profile too.

With our wildly different impressions, our curiosity was peaked. I took out our Cuppamoka and paper filter, while James boiled water and ground the beans. In the end, we had two pour over brews ready to enjoy!

Tasting notes

“It’s so smooth!” said James. “Maybe a little grapey, like a Concord grape? It’s sweet with a hint of fruit and beautifully balanced.”

“A Concord grape, huh?” I responded, impressed with his specific choice of grape variety. I immediately noticed the smooth mouthfeel, which was also a bit syrupy. It seemed like there could be some wildflower honey or maybe even molasses. It was balanced and easy going, like a coffee you’d want to sip all day!

The reveal of the tasting notes was too fun! Wandering Goat says: Berry, apricot, floral, jammy, juicy. Can’t recommend this one enough, it’ll undoubtedly set you up for a positive day.

Espresso Chupacabra

This one is Wandering Goat’s signature blend. Signature blends can tell you a lot about a coffee roaster, so I was eager to see what this espresso would inform us about Wandering Goat! For those curious, “Chupacabra” literally translates as “Goat Sucker,” and the legend of the chupacabra has been around since the late 1980s.

First impressions

The aroma exploded out of the bag as I opened it. I was delighted by how potent, rich, and familiar the smell was.

“This one smells nuttier than the last one,” said James. He sensed cacao, brown sugar, and walnut.

“I am getting more of a floral and fruity smell,” I responded. There was also a lovely caramel undertone coming through.

James heated the water and ground the beans using our Exagrind , while I I took out the Picopresso , Gauge .

wandering goat coffee

James prepared the first espresso and handed it over to me, and I couldn’t wait for him to make his own espresso before taking a sip.

The espresso mouthfeel was cloudlike, smooth, and incredibly satisfying. The taste was full bodied but not overpowering, with a light acidity. After some consideration, I decided I was tasting notes of caramel, raspberry, and milk chocolate.

wandering goat coffee

James had finished making his espresso and was sipping thoughtfully. He said he noted light acid, nuts, blueberry, and honey.

“I feel like I’m set up for the most cozy and also uplifting day,” I said to James.

This is one of those espressos that, the more you sip it, the more you notice about the flavor profile. We agreed it was absolutely perfect for the rainy day we were having.

wandering goat coffee

Wandering Goat says this coffee has notes of floral, citrus, berry, and caramel. James will undoubtedly take the Picopresso and Wandering Goat coffee on the next climbing adventure!

Wandering Goat Coffee is a staple of Eugene. Its die-hard fans will seek it out at any grocery store and that’s not necessarily surprising if you’ve ever tasted the rich, delicious flavor of their coffee. The Wandering Goat Coffee shop in the Whiteaker area is a whole other beast. Combining all the good things about Eugene, coffee, beer, live music and a somehow homey vibe, this shop can do it all. Wandering Goat’s unbeatable flavor of roasted coffee mixed with the eclectic, fun vibe of the shop is maybe what has kept it around for 16 years.

“Our mission from day one has been to provide high-quality organic coffee at the best price for the customer and highest compensation for the farmer; since our first roast in a small garage, we have not wavered from that commitment to sustainability,” Aaron Maltz, general manager at Wandering Goat says. “In that time, Eugene has changed considerably and we continue to represent a historic part of its identity that cannot be manufactured, a stance that we believe continues to resonant with the community.”

Maltz adds that Wandering Goat’s eclectic coffee shop in the Whit will be closed until next year due to the pandemic, but that they are honored to once again be chosen as one of Eugene’s favorite coffee shops.

Story behind New York’s hottest restaurant, Hamburger America

George Motz with a triple cheeseburger at the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago, April 4, 2013, is America’s leading hamburger expert.

CHICAGO — Like many of you, like many of the people in Chicago and in this country, I like hamburgers. But no one I have ever met likes (and knows more about) hamburgers than George Motz. I first met him two decades ago when he walked down the stairs of that subterranean hamburger oasis known as the Billy Goat and said, “There is no other food that says ‘America’ like the burger.”

And so has he recently put his money where his mouth has long been, opening in New York City a restaurant called “Hamburger America” that has people lined up down the block and me remembering that day decades ago and Motz standing in the Billy Goat saying, “All roads lead here. I had never heard of the place, but most people in the burger world kept saying, ‘The Goat has got to be in there.’ [People I knew] vouched for the place. I had a hard time even finding it. I was lost for a while, just wandering the bowels of Chicago. But that first cheeseburger …”

That was in 2003 and Motz was 35 years old, one of six children, a native of Long Island and a successful commercial cameraman easing into the making of documentaries. He had fallen in love with and married a lovely Chicago girl named Casey and one night in their Manhattan apartment they were, he remembers, “watching TV and saw a show about hot dogs, and I thought, ‘Gee, I’ve never seen a really good documentary about hamburgers.’”

He decided to make one, and came up with the criteria that each place featured would have to meet: The meat had to be fresh, nothing frozen; the place had to be family-owned and be more than 40 years old; it had to have had the same burger on the menu for all those years; the burgers had to be distinctive; and the places had to have a good story to tell.

He crisscrossed the country, spending almost three years eating burgers and filming/interviewing the people who made them. That was what he was doing when I met him, as he bit into his first Billy Goat burger and said, “It’s incredible. It was everything I had heard it was. The taste was distinctive, just a great burger.”

And so did the Billy Goat become the last of the eight burger joint stars of Motz’s 2004 documentary, “Hamburger America,” which had its premiere here at the Museum of Contemporary Art, followed by a Billy Goat party.

“What I discovered was that hamburgers would be a perfect way to get people talking about the real America, about real family values,” Motz told me. “These places are bastions of an America that most people don’t see, that many have forgotten even exists.”

That film would give birth to his 2018 book, “Hamburger America: A State-by-State Guide to 200 Great Burger Joints,” featuring the Goat, of course, but also the estimable Top Notch Beefburgers, at 2116 W. 95th St. in the Beverly neighborhood.

Motz was drawn deeper into the food and burger world. He created and produced the Food Film Festival (an annual event for many years here for a while and still in New York). He hosted the Travel Channel’s 2011 series “Made in America,” focusing on factories that make such iconic American products as Jack Daniels whiskey and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

He went on to teach a course about hamburgers at New York University. He and Casey, now divorced, have two children, son Mac now in high school and daughter Ruby in college. He wrote another book, 2016’s “Great American Burger Book: How to Make Authentic Regional Hamburgers at Home.”

He also did a lot of traveling. “I was in many countries —Japan, France, Sweden, Argentina — talking and giving burger-making instruction,” he says. “I know that some of the people from those classes have been inspired to open their own restaurants, spreading the word, so to speak.”

During the pandemic, he created Burgerslide, “a socially distant burger delivery system,” (and Instagram account) that he ran out of his Brooklyn apartment and at various pop-up locations.

He had, understandably, been approached over the decades to open a restaurant but that did not happen until he paired with old friends and successful restaurant owners Jonathan and Andrew Schnipper and opened the new place. It is on the ground floor of a red brick building at the corner of MacDougal and Houston Streets.

On opening day, former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg dropped in. Chris Rock stopped by. And critics were full of praise.

New York magazine’s Underground Gourmet columnist, Tammie Teclemariam, wrote that “Aside from Danny Meyer and Ronald McDonald, George Motz is the biggest name in burgers’” and called his restaurant “a big-city ode to the small-town roadside griddles that Motz has evangelized throughout his career.”

The New Yorker’s Helen Rosner called the classic smash burger “fantastic, strong and correct. You don’t need to know the history of burgers to be taken with its honest flavors, its modest size, its firm handshake of pickle and onion and good ol’ American ground beef.”

They and many other writers talked of the place resembling “an old-fashioned luncheonette,” with a dozen or so stools along a Formica counter surrounding a flat top grill, a few booths and walls filled with old menus, newspaper ads and some of Motz’s photographs.

Mentioned too are more of its retro design touches and other menu items. In addition to the two burger choices, smash burger and an onion smash burger, one can order egg and tuna salad, peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese and warm ham sandwiches; fries and pies; coffee, lemonade and some milk drinks. One beer is available, Miller High Life.

The place is open seven days a week and Motz can often be found there making burgers and talking with customers. He is a naturally gregarious and charming guy, ever eager to share his stories, opinions and dreams.

“It was really a fluke that we were able to find and get this place. We never thought we could afford to open in Manhattan,” he says. “But here we are.”

He plans to invite guest hamburger makers from around the country to work the grill.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.

Average. I'm a latte person. Bean flavor was fair. Staff is nice, ambiance was good, lots of selection, and they have quick service. Pricing was the reason for three stars. Latte pricing was among the highest I've ever paid for an average latte. While it's hands down better than Starbucks, the coffee shops in Franklin have lots better lattes for less money.

We stumbled into Fainting Goat Coffee after other breakfast spots were either closed or experiencing long wait times. We love trending spots, but also wanted to make sure we got enough to eat. Let me tell you, do not overlook this place. The burritos we go were huge and tasty. I say this as an Arizona native. Nice work guys. There was a line when we walked in, but it moved quickly. Once we got our food, we walked outside to the community area and sat on one of the bench swings. It was a breath of fresh air. Our kids enjoyed some of the empanadas and then proceeded to run around. All in all, great food, nice space, friendly staff. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

The Fainting Goat has truly established itself as a premier coffee destination that offers an exceptional experience that is unparalleled in the industry. From the moment you step foot in the restaurant, you are greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. The decor is tastefully done, with a rustic yet modern aesthetic that is both comfortable and stylish. But of course, the real star of the show at The Fainting Goat is the coffee. The restaurant prides itself on sourcing only the highest quality beans from around the world, and it shows in every cup. The flavors are rich and complex, with a smoothness that is simply unmatched. Whether you prefer a classic drip coffee or something a bit more adventurous like a pour-over or cortado, The Fainting Goat has you covered. The baristas are true experts in their craft, with a level of knowledge and skill that is truly impressive. They are always willing to answer any questions you may have and are happy to make recommendations based on your preferences. And if you're feeling a bit peckish, the food menu offers a variety of delicious options that pair perfectly with your coffee. One of the things that sets The Fainting Goat apart from other coffee shops is their commitment to sustainability. They use compostable cups and straws, and offer a discount to customers who bring their own mugs. They also source their ingredients locally whenever possible, which not only supports local farmers and businesses but also ensures that everything is fresh and delicious. In short, The Fainting Goat is a coffee lover's paradise. Whether you're a seasoned coffee connoisseur or just looking for a great cup of joe, this restaurant is sure to exceed your expectations. From the welcoming atmosphere to the expertly crafted drinks and delicious food, every aspect of The Fainting Goat is designed to provide an unforgettable experience. Fun little coffee shop with a cute logo. I stopped by mid morning on a Saturday, and it was a busy place. They have quite a bit of seating and a relatively large parking lot (though the closest spots are all saved for curbside). Because it's apparently a popular local spot, it took a few minutes to get my tasty gingerbread latte, but that's to be expected. They are opening a location in Franklin soon, so if this is too far of a drive for you, be on the lookout for the new spot. If you're in the area, it's worth a stop

Cutest coffee shop around. The staff is amazing, the merch is the cutest and the coffee..to die for. Their seasonal drinks never miss. Everything is always consistently delicious. I try to go early to miss the well deserved lines..but even so, it's worth the wait.

Chupacabra

Great coffee if you are a millionaire who lives in Franklin... Outrageous prices.. overpriced..

Who drives a 45 minutes for coffee. I guess we do. Not normally, but a friend said it's worth it. And, I guess it was. This is a true coffee shop. Yes they sell coffee by the cup, but they have their own concoctions with humorous and inspired names and backstory. The U2 which boasts you've found what you're looking for. We tried the Horchata Latte, the Chupcabra, and the Nacho Libre. Despite the obvious theme they were each a unique blend of ingredients you can check out on their website. All made to order by barista who have a full serving of care, and not even a hint of attitude. Great seating indoor and outdoor. We came right after a rain and wanted to sit outdoors. One of staff was quick to come out and wipe everything down engaging conversation and seemed to be enjoying their time there that day. They have a limited selection of bites. We tried the empanadas. More pasty like than what you normally get an an empanada truck, but really tasty. It's great coffee with a great crew. Worth driving past 1678 other coffee stands just for the experience probably not. If I'm or around Spring Hill, definitely.

If you don't get goat humor...its not for you.. This place is the beeeeeesssst. (Get it? Because goats make a bleeting sound) anyway. I had the mocha libre (I could be butchering the name) with the Carne asada breakfast burrito. Best coupling ever. The spice from the Mexican chocolate in the coffee to go with the pinch of spice from the burrito. Mwah! And this burrito was just as big as the ones made at moes and/or chipittle. Great coffee. Great burrito. Great vibes all around. I would definitely come back and support this local business. Protip: come mid-afternoon. I went mid morning and their overflow parking needed overflow parking.
