How I Picked The Destinations

To ensure I provided accurate and valuable information to my readers, I adopted a meticulous approach.

I made it a point to engage with locals whenever possible.

Their insights and recommendations often uncovered hidden gems that might not have been as well-known.

Additionally, I conducted extensive online research, from browsing travel forums to studying local attractions and amenities.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

The Perfect Three-day Weekend in Cincinnati

Your guide to a long weekend in the Queen City.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

On the banks of of the Ohio River, the history-steeped Queen City has risen from its postindustrial doldrums. For an ideal weekend in Cincinnati — which was named one of Travel + Leisure's Best Places to Travel in 2017 — spend each day in a different neighborhood, each with its own draw.

Cincinnati's CVG International airport is actually across state lines in neighboring Covington, Kentucky, a 20-minute taxi ride from downtown. Anyone with an eye for art should book a room at the 21C Museum Hotel : The former landmark Metropole Hotel is now an art-centric hotel with its own collection, as well as rotating installations and exhibits.

Stick with the creative theme and head next door to the spectacular Zaha Hadid-designed Contemporary Arts Center . Then stroll over to the spiritual heart of the city, Fountain Square, where there might be an open-air concert in full swing. For a treat, there's an outpost of Graeter's on the square. Try the traditionally made black raspberry or chocolate chip ice cream here — the company has been around since the 1870s.

To see Cincinnati's surprising wealth of Art Deco architecture, visit the Hilton Netherland Plaza . Take a seat at its French Art Deco Lobby Bar, with its mirrors, murals and rosewood panels, for a pre-dinner drink. Then go to Mita's , owned by James Beard-nominated chef and Per Se alumnus, Jose Salazar, for sharing plates, tapas, charcuterie, and ceviche from Spain and Latin America. If you want to prolong the evening, 21C's rooftop terrace has killer views of the city skyline.

Devote today to exploring one of the city's most compelling districts, Over-the-Rhine. It has one of the biggest concentrations of 19th-century architecture in the country. The formerly sketchy neighborhood has seen an influx of new investments, and has become a hip enclave. Findlay Market first opened on OTRs northern fringes in 1855. It's a hub of gourmet shops, stalls, cafés, and restaurants, and on the weekends, the adjacent outdoor farmers' market is flooded with producers from Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

For a more substantial meal, head to the diminutive and delicious Eli's BBQ , where the hickory-smoked ribs are the star attraction. Then pick up souvenirs at the bean to bar Maverick Chocolate Company — its Prohibition bar mixes milk chocolate with Kentucky Bourbon.

Take a ride on the Cincinnati Bell Connector , the city's tram, a few blocks south to the regenerated Washington Square. OTR's Vine Street is home to a burgeoning retail scene where you can browse independent stores like Mica/12 . Satisfy any lingering sugar cravings with a trip to Cincinnati institution Holtman's Donuts .

Thanks to its Germanic roots, brewing was one of the mainstays of OTR in the 19th century. Before Prohibition, 15 of Cincinnati's 26 breweries were located here, and there's been a recent boom in openings. Cincinnati Brewery Tours takes visitors underground for a glimpse of the pre-Prohibition tunnels under the city streets. Afterward, sample a local brew at Taft's Ale House . Named in honor of local boy and former president William Howard Taft, it's housed in the former St. Paul's Evangelical Church, and retains the soaring ceilings from 1850.

For dinner, put your name on the list for a table at Bakersfield , a cool Mexican joint for margaritas, tacos, tortas, and tequila, or cross the street to Senate for gourmet upgrades on hot dogs, poutine, and fries (made with bacon fat).

Breakfast at the Maplewood Kitchen & Bar has a cheery West Coast vibe. Order goetta, a local breakfast staple, to go with your entrée. The dish, a mix of steel-cut oats and pork or beef, is a sausage-patty-like side introduced by German immigrants.

Cincinnati's public green spaces, particularly along the river bank, are popular attractions when the weather is nice out. Pick up a Cincy Red Bike near Smale Riverfront Park and freewheel along the riverside cycle lane. You'll pass the Great American Ball Park, the retro-charm of Carol Ann's Carousel and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center . Architecture lovers should cross the river into Covington via the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge. It was the longest bridge of its kind in the world when it was built in 1867, until it was surpassed by Roebling's more famous creation, New York's Brooklyn Bridge, in 1883.

Spend the afternoon exploring the bosky expanse of the hilltop Eden Park. Wander the galleries of the Cincinnati Art Museum , visit the Art Deco Krohn Conservatory , or stop at the Twin Lakes for fine panoramas out over the river over Kentucky.

Sunday evening dining can be a bit of a challenge in Cincinnati, as many restaurants are closed. Snag an early table at Italian restaurant Sotto — this crowd-pleasing subterranean space has roughly hewn walls and dim lighting, and must-eats include the black kale Caesar salad and any of its house-made pasta

Prefer a slower pace? Maybe swap out the sounds of screams and whizzing roller coasters for the gentle clop-clop of a horse-drawn buggy. That’s exactly what you’ll find if you make the trip to Walnut Creek, Ohio, in the state’s Amish country.

Sure, it’ll take about three hours or so to get there, but you’ll find lots to love about this quaint, country-set destination once you’ve arrived. Think lots of shopping (you can’t beat Amish-made furniture!) and rib-sticking Amish eats. If you tire of the Amish vibe, you can find some Swiss influence in the town’s adjacent Sugarcreek.

How do I get to Cincinnati?

Cincinnati is best visited by car or plane. Depending on where your starting destination is, either option is suitable. If flying, the most convenient, the closest airport is the Cincinnati Northern/Kentucky International Airport (CVG).

Cincinnati Northern/Kentucky International Airport is actually located across the river in Kentucky, about 15 miles outside of the city.

Cincinnati is a very spread out city and is best visited with a car (vs. public transportation). If flying, you may opt for renting a car for the weekend.

What is the best time to visit Cincinnati?

The best time to visit Cincinnati is sometime between May-September. If visiting during the spring or fall, visitors can enjoy ideal weather conditions and a full event calendar for the city with loads of options. Visiting during the summertime allows visitors to enjoy various other activities, such as concerts at Riverbend or Fountain Square .

Where should I stay in Cincinnati?

Since Cincinnati is so spread out, where you choose to stay might dictate what you decide to do. However, when visiting Cincinnati, the best areas to stay are the Downtown region , and right across the bridge in Covington/Newport, Kentucky .

Downtown gives visitors access to a lot of attractions within walking distance and access to the public bus line in need be. Stay in Covington allows visitors to avoid a lot of the traffic of the city, and a more relaxed and aesthetic vibe views amazing views of the beautiful Cincinnati skyline.

Sample 3-Day Cincinnati Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in cincinnati.

riverboat in Cincinnati

The Findlay Market is the oldest and most popular public market in Ohio, and a perfect place to begin your visit.  It is one of the most attractive points of interest in the city, especially for food lovers. There is an array of stalls and local vendors selling meats, fruits, vegetables, and even some art, flowers, and jewelry as well. Definitely, a must-see in Cincinnati.

After a busy morning at the market, visit The Underground Railway Center in the afternoon. While this may not be for everyone, the center gives visitors a realistic look back into the past to see what life was really like in the days of slavery. It is important to learn this history, so it is not repeated, and the stories and pictures within the center will make for an unforgettable trip.

One of the best ways to see the city of Cincinnati is by boat. Seeing the city skyline from the river gives viewers a different perspective, especially at night. Various Riverboat Cruise companies offer dinner cruises and sunset tours around the city.

Day 2 in Cincinnati

spring grove cemetery and arboretum

On your second day in Cincinnati, start with an off-the-beaten-path attraction; The Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum . This is the third-largest cemetery in the country and is a National Historic Landmark. It is the resting place of Civil War veterans, artists, athletes, and politicians. It is famous for its gothic-inspired architecture and impressive gravestones.

Over The Rhine is the artiest and most cultural part of the city. It is located downtown in a neighborhood known for originally being poor. Over the years, it transformed into one of the most famous parts of the city, having establishments such as the Cincinnati Music Hall and Emery Theater.

Enjoy a relaxing evening on the river at the Cincinnati River Walk.   The trail stretches from the Roebling Suspension Bridge to Smale Riverfront Park, in both Ohio and Kentucky. The path is 4 miles long allowing visitors to enjoy sights, landmarks, and many stops along the way in both states.

If you would rather explore the riverwalk via bike, you can rent a bike at the RedBike station located at Smale Riverfront Park (5 W Mehring Way).

Day 3 in Cincinnati

Kings Island and brewery in cincinnati

Kings Island is one of the most famous amusement parks in the country, and home to The Beast, the longest wooden roller coaster in the world. The Park is located on the outskirts of the city and is home to dozens of roller coasters, rides, games, and much more excitement inside.

Since your trip to Kings Island will more than likely last long through the afternoon, end it with visiting a brewery. Cincinnati is home to dozens of local breweries, one of the most famous being Mad Tree Brewing Company.

Complete your visit by exploring the downtown region, and finishing with a peaceful evening on the water at Sawyer Point. This is a great time to pick up any last-minute souvenirs or gifts to bring back home as well.

Other things to do in Cincinnati:

  • Abandoned Subway Tunnels: Unknown to most, Cincinnati was once home to a booming subway system. Now unused and abandoned, these tunnels are one of the most unique untouched things to see in all of the city.
  • Cincinnati Zoo: The Cincinnati Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in the whole city, and one of the best zoos in the country. The zoo had a wide range of animal life from all over the world, as well as a conservation program, and many animals are now extinct.
  • Cincinnati History Museum: The Cincinnati History Museum is actually built in one of the abandoned railway terminals, which is actually very relevant to its purpose. The museum is based on the history of the city of its architecture, infrastructure, and booming growth.
  • Mounty Airy Forest: This is one of the largest recreational parks in the state and a perfect place to escape the excitement and bustle of the city. Mount Airy Forest has many hiking trails, treehouses, lots of space to relax, and even horseback rides.
  • City Scavenger Hunt: Compete with friends and learn more about the cities best kept secrets!
  • Cincinnati Ghost Tour: Explore the spookier parts of the city with this guided walking ghost tour.

Other Tips to know before visiting Cincinnati:

If choosing to stay downtown, avoid the Fairmont region. Northwestern and Southern Fairmont has the highest crime rates in the whole city. Despite this, there is a wide variety of other accommodation options in other areas and Cincinnati is overall a safe city.

3-day Cincinnati Weekend Trip Itinerary Recap:

  • Day 1:  The Findlay Market, The Underground Railway Center, Dinner Riverboat cruise
  • Day 2:  Spring Grove Cemetery, Over the Rhine neighborhood, Riverwalk

Cincinnati Weekend Getaway: Itinerary For 3 Days

If you are planning your Cincinnati weekend getaway , we’ve got you covered. This 3-day itinerary shows you Cincinnati’s best attractions. This vibrant southwestern Ohio city is known for its rich German heritage, unique chili, and the home of America’s oldest baseball team. The city sits on the banks of the Ohio River and was incorporated in 1819.

In its early days, it was a major exporter of pork and hay, with its river location making it a prime location for trade and commerce.

In the mid 19th century, Cincinnati was an important stop on the Underground Railroad as slaves crossed from the slave state of Kentucky into the free state of Ohio.

Today, history lives on in Cincinnati through its architecture and museums, but it’s also a city full of the energy of renewal. There is an entrepreneurial spirit, a wonderful brewery and art scene, an active riverfront and so much to do.

Take in the Architecture at Union Terminal

Weekend getaway in Cincinnati: visit Union Terminal

Union Terminal , also known as the Cincinnati Museum Center, was originally built as a train and bus station in 1933. The museum is located right outside of downtown Cincinnati, about 10 minutes driving time from Over-the-Rhine.

The architecture is an impressive example of the art deco style and features a large central rotunda. A large portion of the rotunda walls feature murals made of mosaic tiles that depict the Cincinnati industry.

This iconic Cincinnati landmark is separated into different wings and covers Cincinnati History, natural history, and science. Plus, there is an impressive and fun children’s museum downstairs and an omnimax theater.

To learn more about the architecture and history of the building, historic tours are offered of the rotunda for free. To get the full experience, be sure to stand at the drinking fountains in the lobby and whisper to someone across the rotunda.

Nightlife in Over-the-Rhine

If you want to experience the nightlife in Cincinnati, Over-the-Rhine is one of the best neighborhoods to explore. Rhinegeist is at the far north end of the neighborhood, so you’ll likely want to take the streetcar or Rideshare to make your way to the south end and explore the streets between Washington Park and Main. Before it gets dark, be sure to take in the view of the iconic Music Hall from Washington Park.

There is a bar or restaurant for everyone in the area, some of the locals’ favorite spots. If you enjoy cocktails, visit the apothecary-themed Sundry & Vice or Japp’s, which is located inside a former wig shop.

Weekend in Cincinnati: Visit Roebling Bridge

There are swinging benches that overlook the river, an interactive flying pig structure for kids, a giant keyboard, and more. However, the best part of the park is the view of the Roebling Suspension Bridge . This iconic Cincinnati landmark opened in 1867 and was created by the same architect as New York City ’s Brooklyn Bridge.

The bridge is painted blue and “sings” as cars drive across it. If you’re a baseball fan, visit the Reds Hall of Fame at the Great American Ball Park while you’re in the area.

Explore The Banks

Walk from Smale Riverfront Park to West Freedom Way, where there are great restaurants, bars, and museums. For history buffs, be sure to visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center . The museum shares stories of the Underground Railroad, invisible slavery today and more through impactful exhibits, videos, and interactive elements.

If you’re a baseball fan, visit the Reds Hall of Fame at the Great American Ball Park, which details the history of the Cincinnati Reds.

Incline Public House For  Dinner with a View

After a day full of exploring, get a view of the city from above at dinnertime. Cincinnati is surrounded by seven main hills, meaning that there are several opportunities for amazing views overlooking the city.

One of the best views can be seen from Price Hill, where there is a small park and a couple of restaurants that directly face the city. Incline Public House is the more affordable dining option and serves American gastropub food with an amazing view. Enjoy pizza, soft pretzels, beer cheese, sandwiches, and more in a laid-back environment. Time your visit with the sunset for beautiful lighting over the city.

If you’re still hungry, visit the nearby Bold Face Dairy Bar Company for an ice cream treat after dinner. A night out overlooking the city from Price Hill makes for the perfect Cincinnati date night .

Here we suggest a good night’s rest, so you can enjoy the last day of your weekend getaway in Cincinnati.

3-Day Weekend in Cincinnati: Last Day

Breakfast at holtman’s donuts.

If you are a donut fan, be sure to start the last day of your weekend in Cincinnati at Holtman’s Donuts for some of the best donuts in town.

Enjoy the Famous Cincinnati Zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. The zoo has a commitment to conservation, education, and preservation and has more than 500 animals and 3,000 plant species.

It is most famous for Fiona the Hippo – a hippo born prematurely that captured the hearts of people all around the world. In 2021, Fiona turned four and you can still visit her today. If you visit the Cincinnati Zoo around the holidays in December or January, there is also a very impressive display of over 4 million LED lights. No matter when you visit the zoo, wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for hills.

The zoo is a great spot to go on a weekend trip in Cincinnati, especially if you’re traveling with children.

Take in the Views at Eden Park

If you have energy left after a visit to the zoo, Eden Park is a beautiful place to visit for views of the Ohio River. It’s also home to two more amazing Cincinnati attractions: The Cincinnati Art Museum and the Krohn Conservatory.

Cincinnati weekend getaway: Visit the Art Museum

The Cincinnati Art Museum has an art collection with over 67,000 pieces that span 1,000’s years. General admission is free and there are often exciting rotating exhibits. Krohn Conservatory is made up of gardens and greenhouses and was designed in the art deco style of architecture. It’s a beautiful place to see a variety of plant life. It opens from 11am to 5pm on the weekends.

Enjoy Cincinnati Classics at Skyline and Graeters on Ludlow Ave

You can’t leave Cincinnati without trying the famous Cincinnati chili. Cincinnati chili is likely not what you would expect from your typical chili dish. It is served over spaghetti or hot dogs and is more similar to a meat sauce.

It originated from Macedonian immigrants in the 1920s and has developed a cult-like following in Cincinnati today. You will order your chili as a “three-way,” “four-way” or “five-way,” depending on if you would like onions and beans in addition to the classic spaghetti, chili, and cheddar cheese.

There are a few different restaurants that offer Cincinnati chili and the question of which is the best is hotly debated. For the atmosphere and location, a good option is the Skyline Chili on Ludlow Avenue.

This is the oldest standing Skyline Chili and has beautiful vintage signs out front. After enjoying your unique Cincinnati meal, take a short walk down to Graeter’s Ice Cream on the same street. Graeter’s is over 150 years old and consistently ranks as one of the best ice creams in America. Order the signature black raspberry chip and enjoy giant chunks of chocolate made in small batches.

Finally, enjoy exploring Ludlow Avenue, which is known as the Clifton Gaslight District. Catch a movie at the historic Esquire Theatre , visit one of the many local shops, or just stroll down the street and enjoy the historic gas lamps and surrounding historic homes.

Getting To And Around Cincinnati

If you’re flying for your Cincinnati getaway, you’ll actually arrive in Kentucky at the CVG Airport. From there, it’s about a 25-minute drive to reach downtown Cincinnati. As you travel between the airport and the city, be sure to enjoy the view of the city skyline as you descend into the river valley on I-75. There are regular flights from New York, Seattle , Las Vegas , and Charlotte . You drive from Chicago , 296 miles (476 kilometers) away.

I would recommend renting a car for your trip to Cincinnati for the ultimate flexibility.  However, if you stay downtown near the Cincinnati Streetcar (known as the Cincinnati Bell Connector), you can reach many of the locations covered here for free.

See Also:  Unusual Places to Visit in New York

The streetcar travels a 3.6-mile loop and makes 18 different stops around downtown Cincinnati and the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Even if you do have a rental car, the streetcar is wonderful for these neighborhoods as parking can be hard to find and expensive.

In addition to the streetcar, use Rideshare or public buses to get around if you decide not to rent a car. The Metro 1 bus will take you to popular destinations like the Union Terminal Museum.

The next festival will take place in 2024, and the dates are still to be determined. However, it’s typically in October

Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati : Established in 1976, this event has grown to be America’s largest Oktoberfest. Parts of downtown are transformed into a colorful Bavarian village serving up German-style food, beer, and entertainment. Hundreds of thousands of people attend every year to enjoy the sounds, sights, and tastes! This year it will take place September 14-17, 2023.

The Taste of Cincinnati : One of the nation’s largest free culinary arts festivals, this Cincinnati tradition started in 1979 and is one of the nation’s largest free culinary arts festivals. It features over 65 restaurants, food trucks, and Findlay Market vendors, along with several stages of live entertainment. This typically takes place at the end of May each year.

Other Attractions

Cincinnati Zoo : The Cincinnati Zoo is the second oldest in the country and is considered one of the best. If you are an animal lover, you definitely want to add visiting the zoo to your itinerary. P.S. It is home to the world-famous hippo, Fiona!

Findlay Market : Established back in 1855, Findlay Market holds the distinction of being Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market, a true testament to its enduring charm. This beloved Cincinnati institution remains open from Tuesday to Sunday, all year round, providing a bustling hub where over 40 indoor vendors offer a delightful array of meat, fish, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli items, and an enticing variety of ethnic foods.

Fountain Square : This downtown restaurant and entertainment hub is a great place for snacks, dining, ice skating in the winter, or an afternoon stroll year-round.

Cultural Museums

The Underground Railroad Freedom Center : I highly recommend this museum. It shares stories of freedom’s heroes from the era of the Underground Railroad to contemporary times. It features an Implicit Bias Lab and permanent and traveling exhibits. It is recommended that you spend at least three hours here. We only had two hours here, and it wasn’t enough, but still glad that we went and saw what we could in that time frame.

The Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center : The museum uses interactive experiences and artifacts to tell the history of the Holocaust. Here you will experience stories of perseverance, courage, loss, redemption, and new life told by local Holocaust survivors. The knowledge gained here will inspire you to be a brave upstander.

Food and Drinks

Cincinnati is known for its chili, and you should absolutely have some during your trip! But being a foodie scene, you’ll have options for much more! Below are some recommendations from current residents.

Restaurants

Taste of Belgium: Traditional Belgian recipes with a twist and American classics Belgianized.

Lou Vino Cincy: where big wines and small plates unite

The Filson: An elevated sports bar that brings together sports fans, happy hour hunters, and concertgoers for savory bar bites and Midwestern charm

Soul Secrets LLC: Soul food restaurant in OTR

Ambar India Restaurant: Voted the best Indian Restaurant in Cincy in 2023. It’s been a while since I’ve been, but this place set the standard for Indian food for me back in the day, and in all my travels, no place has yet to top it.

Local Bakeries

Busken Bakery: Established in 1928 and serves cakes, pies, donuts etc. My go-tos here are the glazed (best ever) and the maple long john.

Sports in Cincinnati

Cincinnati has an MLB, MLS, and NFL team. The region is also home to several NCAA Division 1 basketball teams. So if you like watching sports, you’ll have plenty to choose from in the Queen City.

Cincinnati Reds (MLS)

FC Cincinnati (MLS)

Cincinnati Bengals (NFL)

NCAA Division 1 Teams in the Region: University of Cincinnati Bearcats , Northern Kentucky University Norse , Xavier University Musketeers , Miami University RedHawks .

Transportation

It’s quite possible to spend an entire weekend in the Over the Rhine (OTR) and downtown area. If most of your activities are in these areas, you won’t need a car. The OTR area has a streetcar, and you can use the Cincy Red Bike (Cincinnati’s Bike Share Program) to get around. Of course, there are also ride shares like Uber and Lyft that you can use.

If you are going to explore other areas of the city, then I recommend getting a rental car.

Notable Neighborhoods

Over The Rhine (OTR): Trending arts scene, cool events, and many restaurant and bar options. This neighborhood is a must on your trip.

Walnut Hills + Clifton: Here, you’ll find the city’s two largest universities, the best international foods, and an indie theatre.

Hyde Park + Mt. Adams: Unique and historic neighborhoods

All in all, Cincinnati is a great place to live, work and visit. It offers an extraordinary blend of experiences that cater to every taste and budget. The city’s culinary landscape is a food lover’s paradise, with a diverse range of flavors and dining options that never fail to tantalize the taste buds. Beyond the delicious cuisine, Cincinnati boasts a thriving and vibrant art scene where creativity flourishes in galleries, museums, and street art. Nature enthusiasts will also find solace in the city’s abundance of scenic trails and green spaces, providing a refreshing retreat from urban life.

What sets Cincinnati apart is its affordability; nearly all goods and services here cost below the national average. This makes it easier to indulge in exceptional food, be immersed in the art and culture, and connect with nature, all without breaking the bank.

Whether you’re seeking a gourmet adventure, artistic inspiration, outdoor exploration, or simply an affordable getaway, Cincinnati delivers on all fronts, making it an ideal destination for a memorable and fulfilling experience!

Cincinnati is a fabulous celebration of extremes. Slick speakeasies rub elbows with landmark watering holes. The Cincinnati Reds play ball a stone’s throw away from the scenic Ohio River. Flea markets bursting with treasures sit side by side with sophisticated fashion outlets. It’s a town for everyone — unapologetically quirky, steeped in history, and brimming with world-class attractions.

No matter what your taste or budget, you can easily have an enjoyable and unique weekend in good ol’ Cincy. Here are some of the best things to see and do.

Smale Riverfront Park in Cincinnati.

aceshot1 / Shutterstock

Check Out Smale Riverfront Park

Smale Riverfront Park is a sprawling public space that sits right on the Ohio River overlooking Kentucky. It’s a fantastic place to enjoy a midday stroll. If you get warm, the many water features and fountains of Smale Riverfront Park are there to send a cool misty breeze your way. The park is bursting with gardens and tranquil paths, and it even features a huge functional piano. Tap into your inner kid and play a little something!

Perhaps the most fun feature of Smale Riverfront Park is the row of swings facing the river. They’re perfect for kicking up your feet, enjoying an iced coffee, and simply watching the boats lazily make their way down the river. Tucked away from the sounds of traffic, Smale Riverfront Park is a relaxing haven in the big city.

The National Underground Freedom Center.

EQRoy / Shutterstock

Pay Your Respects At The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

Cincinnati was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center honors the brave people who risked their lives for a taste of freedom — and reminds us of the struggles our nation faces today.

Interactive exhibits like The Rosa Parks Experience allow visitors to step into the shoes of the activists who fought against cruel Jim Crow laws. A poignant memorial to the victims of the Middle Passage and an actual slave pen force visitors to reckon with the sins of the past, and an exhibit called Invisible: Slavery Today addresses present-day human trafficking and exploitation.

It’s a sobering, informative, and important museum that is a must-visit. Tickets are $15 at the door, and the museum is open daily until 5 p.m.

Step Into A Speakeasy

Why settle for a ho-hum bar when you can access a secret watering hole through a vintage video store? The Video Archive is a love letter to film director Quentin Tarantino, and the entrance is located behind a moving shelf in a nondescript video store.

Getting to the general area is easy, but you might have some trouble finding the actual place. Look for Just Q’in BBQ , and The Video Archive is right next door. Once inside The Video Archive, you’ll be instructed to pull out a VHS tape from the far wall and watch a secret door slide open. The bar itself is cozy, and the drinks menu is inspired by classic Tarantino movies.

Visit The City’s Top Attractions

Cincinnati is home to one of the most acclaimed zoos in the country, and it’s located right downtown, so you can spend the morning greeting animals from around the world and the afternoon at the waterfront. Baseball fans will not want to miss a Cincinnati Reds game.

The city is home to yet another themed bar for those who want a dash of Stephen King with their whiskey and rye. The Overlook Lodge bears an eerie resemblance to the hotel from The Shining . Just avoid room 237!

Eating In Cincinnati

You will not go hungry on your weekend getaway in Cincinnati. The city is chock-full of local favorites and comfort foods that have a special Cincy spin on them. From flavorful chilis to decadent ice creams, you’ll be eating well in this Midwestern city.

Skyline Chili in Cincinnati.

Skyline Chili

Skyline Chili is a chain of restaurants with a loyal following in Cincinnati and beyond. Its signature dish is chili, Cincinnati style. Skyline’s Cincinnati chili is flavorful and decadent, with notes of sweet clove and cinnamon mingling with savory, beefy flavors. It comes served atop a pile of spaghetti and crowned with a massive helping of shredded Cheddar cheese. The combination of chili, pasta, and cheese is completely addictive.

You can order your chili several ways, customizing it with diced onions and beans. You can even order it without the cheese, although I wouldn’t recommend it. The thinly grated cheese is what makes this local dish sing, and it’s what you will remember long after you leave the Buckeye State.

Graeter’s Ice Cream

Ask any Cincinnatian where they go for a tasty sweet treat, and they will automatically mention Graeter’s Ice Cream . This chain of local shops has been around since the turn of the last century and is famous for its thick, custardy ice cream.

Graeter’s Ice Cream gets its consistency from its French pot process, which turns out tiny batches that are supremely creamy and thick. The company offers standard flavors like chocolate and vanilla as well as ones that pay tribute to Ohio, like buckeye chocolate chip. Graeter’s shops are located all across Cincinnati, and each one is reminiscent of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor — a wholesome slice of Americana that’s sure to hit the sweet spot.

Montgomery Inn Boathouse

For the best barbecue in Cincinnati, head to Riverside Drive and belly up to a table at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse . Slow-cooked ribs are the specialty of the house. The tender, flavorful meat falls right off the bone and goes perfectly with a decadent side of Montgomery Inn’s own macaroni and cheese. If you want something that’s less filling, check out the barbecued chicken or the fresh Gulf shrimp.

The coleslaw is another signature recipe, striking the right balance between spicy and sweet. If you’re feeling like something on the lighter side, opt for the wedge salad drizzled in blue cheese and topped with bacon crumbles.

Findlay Market

Findlay Market is one of the oldest fresh fruit and vegetable markets in the city. On the weekends, it’s packed with vendors and merchants, and you can sample some of Cincinnati’s local wares. In addition to farm-fresh produce and fruits, you can find thick cubes of homemade fudge and jewel-toned jars of delicious jam. It’s a great place to stop for lunch and a unique spot to pick up souvenirs for family and friends.

From slow-cooked barbecue to heaps of creamy ice cream, Cincinnati has you covered on the food front.

Shopping In Cincinnati

It should come as absolutely no surprise that Cincinnati’s shopping options are as varied as everything else in the city. Whether you’re in the mood to go treasure hunting at a flea market or browse a high-end boutique, you can scratch your shopping itch in Cincy.

The Cincinnati Premium Outlets.

Cincinnati Premium Outlets

If you’re looking for great deals on luxury brands like Lacoste and Michael Kors, you need to check out the Cincinnati Premium Outlets . They’re about a 40-minute drive from the heart of downtown, but they’re well worth the trip. The outlets are huge and full of discounted luxury items from major designers like Ann Taylor and Ralph Lauren.

Hyde Park Square

Hyde Park is a sophisticated neighborhood full of cute boutique shops that sell everything from home goods to yoga clothes. Even if you don’t find anything that catches your eye, you’ll still enjoy strolling through this charming shopping district.

Ohio Valley Antique Mall

The Ohio Valley Antique Mall is a nod to Cincinnati’s love for flea markets. The only difference is that it’s a massive mall organized by vendor and street signs. The aisles all have different names or street signs, so you can easily identify where you are in the enormous complex. If you’d prefer to throw caution to the wind and lose yourself in the antique extravaganza, that’s okay, too. Plan to spend the better part of the day exploring the mall.

Art On Vine

Art on Vine is a cool and chic artisan market where you can support local artists and find one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Located conveniently in Washington Park, this market is very popular with art-loving locals and visitors alike.

Flea Markets

In Cincinnati, there are dozens of flea markets! Peddlers Flea Market , open weekends from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., has over 400 vendors and plenty of local tasty treats to keep you fueled as you search for the perfect treasure. Not to be outdone, Everybody’s Flea Market on Reading Road strives to meet the demands of all of its patrons. Village Flea Market is another local haunt, open all day on Saturdays and Sundays and packed full of weird, wacky, and wonderful wares.

If you have the patience and desire, you can certainly unearth some incredible treasures in the flea markets of Cincy.

Cincinnati is a great weekend getaway option, especially if you live in the eastern part of the United States. It’s completely affordable, full of attractions and things to do, and has a ton of flair and character. Next time you’re thinking about getting away from it all, think Cincy.

Things To Do In Cincinnati: A Solo Weekend Trip

cincinnati weekend trip, things to do in cincinnati

I’ve had a certain image of Cincinnati in my head for many years, but I knew that it was probably outdated and not terribly fair.  And with the city only two hours up the highway from my home in Louisville, I knew I was long overdue in exploring the Queen City.

What I discovered is that Cincinnati is a beautiful blend of historic and modern, with a strong German heritage that it seems to be rediscovering and celebrating.   I found myself thoroughly charmed by the historic architecture, the vibrant street art, and enamored with the food.

So I wanted to share my thoughts on things to do in Cincinnati, and how to get the most out of a visit.

A little about Cincinnati…

Often considered the first truly “American city”, as the first founded after the American Revolution, Cincinnati’s history is a tale of several different phases.  It was a boom town and became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the mid-1800s due to its bustling steamboat trade, and called the “Paris of America”.

it was seen as a gritty, industrial city through much of the 1900s, and by 2001 had the dubious distinction of being one of the most dangerous cities in America.  But over the past 20 years it has clawed its way back and now offers locals and visitors beautiful historic architecture, cool history, an up-and-coming food and craft beer scene, and a number of Fortune 500 companies as key employers.

As I mentioned above, Cincinnati also has a very strong German heritage (rather like Louisville).  The city had a ton of German immigrants in the 1700s and 1800s, and by 1900 a full 60% of the population was German!  This influenced the city’s architecture, food, and beer industries among other things.

Areas of Cincinnati to focus your visit on

At the very beginning of my trip research, there were a bunch of different neighborhoods that popped on my radar to explore…OTR, downtown, Woodburn, Walnut Hills, Mount Adams, Covington over the river in Kentucky.  Yeah, the list gets long.

But since I only had a couple days, I really focused in on the Over-the-Rhine (OTR) area and the historic Downtown all the way to the waterfront.   This had a couple benefits.  It made most of what I was doing (technically all, but I got lazy a couple times) totally walkable.  I parked my car Friday in OTR by my Airbnb and didn’t move it til I left town.

It also meant I didn’t lose lots of time driving between neighborhoods, finding parking, and that kind of thing.  I really got to immerse myself in a pretty compact area, and all that walking helped me burn off all the calories I was consuming on my foodie explorations.

How to get around

This will depend a lot on where you’re staying (more on that at the end of the post).  Because I chose to base myself in the Over-the-Rhine (OTR) neighborhood, I just walked everywhere…I put on like 15,000-20,000 steps a day!  (A good excuse for my food explorations.)

Parts of Cincinnati are very walkable, including the OTR and Brewery District, Washington Park area, and all the way through Downtown to the river.  It’s one of the best ways to really explore the beautiful historic buildings, local businesses, and colorful street art.

In this area you can also take the tram, otherwise known as the Cincinnati Connector.  It goes up and down between the waterfront and up to OTR, and you can get a day ticket (or when I was there over the weekend it was free).

Lastly, either driving or Ubers/Lyfts are definitely an option in Cincinnati.  I took Ubers at night a couple times to get home from dinner when I was further away and wasn’t positive about walking in certain areas alone at night.  I also would have driven to other neighborhoods (including some of the further-out breweries) if my visit hadn’t been so short.

Things to do in Cincinnati

If you stick with a pretty focused area (and honestly even if you don’t, but are here on a weekend trip without rush hour traffic), you can see and do quite a lot during your time here.

I feel like I have to give my usual caveat that I’m really not a museum person.  But if museums are your thing there are some great ones here—I’ve heard the American Sign Museum, the National Underground Railroad Center, and the Cincinnati Art Museum are awesome.  Also there’s a Lucky Cat Museum which…YES.

Immerse yourself in Over-the-Rhine (OTR)

Once one of those “absolutely don’t go there” places from a safety standpoint, Cincinnati’s OTR area is now jam-packed with hip bars, celebrated restaurants, and local boutiques.

Outside of the main drag there are definitely still some transitional parts, abandoned lots, etc., but it now boasts one of the country’s most up-and-coming food scenes ( Food & WIne ), vibrant and varied street art, and a fascinating collection of historical buildings and architectural styles.

Cincinnati has some of the best intact examples of 19th-century Italianate architecture (built between 1850-1900), and while you can find them sprinkled all over the city, the OTR area has a concentration.  In particular around the 12th and Vine area gives you some good ones (like the first pic below).

Some of the hallmarks of this more romantic style are tall thin windows, decorative bracket-like eaves on the windows, and a belvedere-like thing at the top.  I don’t know if the bright colors were as common back in the mid-1800s, but I absolutely love the colorful, fanciful effect!

On a side note (and this building is further down past the Washington Park area), I adore these skinny houses!  Most of the time they’re all stacked together in a “row house” style (like the ones above), but this guy is just sitting out there on his own.

Something that a friend told me (but I couldn’t figure out how to confirm) was that you see a lot of super skinny row houses and buildings, and that was because the people who built those houses were from Germany, where houses were taxed by the width of their lot.  A cool historical note if it’s true!

Right alongside the larger architecture you can behold, one thing I loved about exploring both OTR and downtown was all the amazing DETAILS.

Below are just a few examples, some a main part of the buildings, and others newer additions that just add to the area’s overall charm.

Spend some time at Findlay Market

Located in the heart of OTR, Findlay is Cincinnati’s oldest public market and today is packed full of food stands, fresh meat and produce vendors, and locally-made goods.

You can both walk around and through the inside of the market (inside is fully covered, but quite a tight squeeze during peak times).  The market is surrounded by many of the brightly-colored historic buildings in the OTR area and so makes a great photo op as well (would have been even better with blue skies).

If I’d had more time I definitely would have looked for a food tour here to be able to sample a bunch of different things.   They also offer regular market tours focused on the market’s history.  Check out their opening times, special events, parking info, and more at the official website .

Head up to the Brewery District

Still (as far as I can tell) a part of the OTR area, the Brewery District is another place you need to wander around.  It stands to reason that with a significant amount of German immigrants, a robust brewery culture would develop in this part of Cincinnati.

The first brewery opened in 1853, and this area north of Liberty Street became the heart of Cincinnati’s brewing industry.  At its peak, Christian Moerlein Brewing Co was the largest and occupied three full city blocks.  Prohibition took its toll on the whole industry in the 1920s, but in the last decade or so it’s really seen a revival.

I didn’t spend a ton of time up here, but absolutely made a point to visit Rhinegeist Brewery .  If you are interested, you can take a number of different tours, including a Brewery Heritage walking tour or the Ultimate Queen City Underground Tour (think cellars, tunnels, etc.).  The street art in this area is also awesome.

Visit a local institution–Taft’s Ale House

As I was doing some research before my trip, almost every single thing I read told me to make sure I paid a visit to Taft’s.  And I definitely concur!  Named after former U.S. prez William Howard Taft (a Cincy native), Taft’s is located in the former St. Paul’s German Evangelical Protestant Church (wow, that’s a mouthful).

The church was built in 1850 but fell into disrepair after it was abandoned in the 1980s.  Thankfully it was able to be saved and renovated, and is now an awesome place for a bite and a drink.

cincinnati weekend trip, things to do in cincinnati

They’ve done a great job of beautifully blending the former church with a brew-pub atmosphere (and do offer a little walking tour if you want to learn more about the history).  You can learn more at their website .

I was still stuffed from my morning pastry adventures and didn’t want to fill up much before my early dinner reservation, so just had a light lunch and a half pour of the hazelnut latte coffee stout.  Mmmmm!

Enjoy the Washington Park area

Just down the street a bit from Taft’s is pretty and chill Washington Park.  Take a stroll around (there was either music or a musician playing at night when I was there) and soak in some of the awesome buildings nearby, which were some of my favorites.

The other great thing to see here is the Cincinnati Opera House (also called Music Hall).  Built in 1878 and designated as a National Historic Landmark, the building is a super impressive Victorian-Gothic style and photographs like a dream.  It also is home to the country’s second-oldest opera company (which I didn’t know!).

Head toward downtown and Fountain Square

Fountain Square is often called the symbolic center of Cincinnati, featuring a fairly dramatic European fountain dedicated in 1871.  There isn’t really anything to *do* here, per se, but it’s worth a quick stop.  And from here you can even see Carew Tower.

Note, the fountain isn’t running all year (usually from right before baseball opening day until it gets too cold November/December-ish).

Carew Tower

This dramatic art deco building is the tallest elevated building in Cincinnati (second-tallest overall), dating back to 1930.  I’ll be honest, it’s cool but a little underwhelming from the outside when compared to how many super unique buildings Cincinnati can claim.  Specifically it’s considered a really fine example of French Art Deco and was modeled after the Empire State Building.

But INSIDE it’s pretty amazing.  The tower houses the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, which I was fortunate to stay in a few years ago on a business trip (one pic below, and one at the end of this post).

It’s opulent and glamorous, including a Versailles-style Hall of Mirrors banquet room and featuring an observation deck on the 49th floor with amazing panoramic views.

Don’t only focus on Carew Tower…wander downtown

There are a number of awesome buildings and architectural styles and details throughout downtown that are more *outwardly* impactful than Carew Tower.

The styles (in my incredibly uneducated opinion) do tend to run more toward Art Deco (early 1900s to 1930s) and not as dominated by the mid/late 1800s styles as much.  Here are a few I loved.

If you’re looking for things to do in Cincinnati and are as intrigued by the buildings here as I am, I’d definitely look into some of the different Cincinnati architecture tours on offer.

Soak in those waterfront and bridge views!

As with my own home just downriver in Louisville, Cincinnati is a river city defined by the bridges crisscrossing the Ohio River into Newport, Kentucky.

Four of the bridges are pedestrian-friendly, and they’re all fairly close to each other.  If the weather is nice, you definitely have to walk across for the great views of the city!   The four pedestrian bridges are John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, Purple People Bridge, Taylor Southgate Bride and Clay Wade Bailey Bridge.

I walked the Roebling one, built in 1867.  And if it looks vaguely familiar, it should…it was designed by the same architect who later built NYC’s Brooklyn Bridge.

It was sadly overcast when I was there so the photos were good but not amazing.  I’ve heard sunset is an amazing time for photos if you can swing it (I’d look into which bridge is best for that).

Similarly, Smale Waterfront Park (which is where the Roebling Bridge starts) is worth a walk around on a nice day.  The views are great, there’s a fun playground for the kids, and I even loved it on an early morning run…isn’t that lit-up bridge gorgeous?!

Seek out all Cincinnati’s best street art

I’ve written a much deeper post that’s kind of an ode to Cincinnati’s murals , so definitely check that out.  There is such a variety of styles, colors, and topics throughout the city.

You can take a walking street art tour if you want to make sure you see all the great ones or just have a deep interest in learning more about the individual pieces of art.  Or, like me, you can just wander all over and happen upon them yourself.

Catch a Cincinnati Reds game

I didn’t on this trip (it wasn’t baseball season), but when I visited a few summers ago for work we got to take in a game.

On a beautiful summer night, this is a super thing to do in Cincinnati to experience the city even if you’re not a baseball fan (I’m…eh on it depending on the day but enjoy being there).

Things to do in Cincinnati on a weekend trip - catch a baseball game

So as you can tell, I packed a lot into my weekend trip so hopefully this gives you tons of ideas for what to do in Cincinnati.  And we haven’t even talked FOOD yet!  So let’s get to it…

Where to eat & drink in Cincinnati

As I mentioned at the outset, the food scene here has really see a renaissance in the past several years.  I had a blast eating and drinking my way through the city, and have done a super IN-DEPTH post on Cincinnati’s bars, restaurants, breweries, bakeries, and coffee shops .  Below is just a taste…

Starting with cocktails (as I often do…).  I fell in love with cool, retro Sundry & Vice and made it there both nights of my trip, including for to-go drinks.

Things to Do in Cincinnati, Ohio | How to plan a Cincinnati weekend trip packed full of beautiful architecture, history, great food and drink, breweries, riverfront views, & more! Where to stay in Cincinnati, restaurant & bar recommendations, Cincinnati architecture, OTR area, Brewery District, historic downtown explorations. #weekendtrip #cincinnati #ohio

I also had good cocktails at both Sotto and Abigail Street when I went for dinner, and AMAZING food.  Sotto in particular blew my mind, and both of these dinners were rave-worthy.  Make sure you get reservations well ahead for Sotto!

I also had brunch at Sacred Beast Diner (get the corned beef hash!), but it would also make a great lunch or dinner option.  And don’t forget to spend some time wandering around both the inside and outside of Findlay Market (more on that above in the Things to Do in Cincinnati section).

Things to do in Cincinnati on a weekend trip - dinner at Sotto is a must!

Cincinnati’s craft brewery scene is worth an exploration all its own as well, and I just scratched the surface with a quick visit to both Rhinegeist Brewery and Taft’s Ale House (delish food, cool ambiance).  Some of the others that were on my list were further out in other neighborhoods, but if craft beer is your thing then I’d say they’re worth the drive.

I also made my way to several local coffee shops and bakeries…sadly none of the coffee shops were allowing inside seating at the time, but I got some delicious coffee at 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab , Coffee Emporium , Collective Espresso , and Urbana Cafe at Findlay .

None of the coffee shops had *amazing* pastries so I sought out the local icon Holtman’s Donuts and then stumbled upon Cherbourg Cyprus Bakery at Findlay…seriously the most DELICIOUS strawberry scones I’ve had.

The boozy milkshakes at Buzzed Bull Creamery are worth a shout-out as well!

Again, check out my deep-dive post on Cincinnati’s food & drink scene!

Where to stay

While I considered a cool hotel on this stay, I ultimately ended up deciding that an apartment in the up-and-coming Over-the-Rhine neighborhood was the way to go, for walkability to a variety of the restaurants, breweries, and bars I wanted to try out.

I found this adorable Airbnb right around the corner from Findlay Market in OTR.

I found myself nice and cozy here, including cuddling up in the robe provided!

I also strongly considered the historic Renaissance Cincinnati Downtown , built in 1901 by famous architect Daniel Burnham (who I learned more about in Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City ).

I’ve also stayed at the historic Hilton Cincinnati Netherland , a beautiful French Art Deco hotel and National Historic Landmark dating to 1931.  This hotel really is stunning and opulent, and a unique option for where to stay in Cincinnati.

If you need a break from learning about aviation, you can visit the Dayton Art Institute, kayak down the river, or stroll through one of the city's beautiful parks.

Last-Minute Solar Eclipse Glasses: Here's How to Find a Pair

Warby Parker says its stores are out of stock of free ones, but you still have other options. Also, make sure you test your glasses.

  • Added coconut oil to cheap coffee before keto made it cool.

Warby Parker eclipse glasses

It's essential to wear a proper pair of eclipse glasses, or a  box pinhole projector  for indirect viewing , if you'll be viewing the skies during the solar eclipse today . Except for the brief period of total darkness or totality, looking at any portion of the sun or partial eclipse can cause damage to your eyes .

Warby Parker , the popular prescription glasses shop, was making it a little easier by offering free solar eclipse glasses at its stores. However, the company is now out of stock, according to an automated message on Warby Parker's customer service line, and information from a company representative provided to CNET Sunday evening. (If you don't want to take my word for it, you can try calling your local Warby Parker store using this store-locator map .)

We're down to the wire. But if you're searching last- last minute, below are a couple more ways to snag a pair of glasses that come from the American Astronomical Society's  preapproved list of sellers  that make legitimate (i.e. safe) eclipse glasses.

If you bought your glasses from a store or source outside the list of safe sellers, it's an extra-good idea to test your glasses before the eclipse  to make sure they're the real deal, especially amid recent  reports of recalls of eclipse glasses, including some stores in Missouri.

Where else to look for free glasses (or buy some last minute)

A good option for finding free solar eclipse glasses is to visit your local library to see if it's offering any. The AAS has a map of  libraries offering certified glasses . Or, you can give your library a call.

If you're out of free options, there are some chain stores, restaurants and convenience stores selling certified solar eclipse glasses, according to the AAS, although whether they carry them will depend on the individual location.

The following stores sell certified glasses in-shop, as identified by the AAS :

  • Walmart
  • Cracker Barrel
  • Bucc-ee's
  • Meijer
  • Menards

If you get to your local Warby Parker store and it's already run out of eclipse glasses, the company says it also has  pinhole projectors  on hand. (You can also  make your own   pinhole projector .)

Wherever you get your glasses, especially if you buy them from a source that hasn't been vetted specifically by the AAS, it's a good idea to give them a test run before the big event. To help you figure it out, the  American Academy of Ophthalmology says that while looking through them, no light of "ordinary brightness" should be visible through your eclipse glasses or solar viewer; only the sun or sunlight that's reflected somewhere.

For more on solar eclipse eye safety and where to find glasses ahead of time, here's what an optometrist would like you to know . Also, here's more information about the path of totality and how to watch the solar eclipse .

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
