15 Baltic Cruise Travel Tips You NEED to Know

If you are considering a Baltic cruise, you probably have a lot of questions.

I’ve been on two Baltic cruises and I’d wholeheartedly recommend these itineraries . It is a beautiful part of the world.

Several things are specific to Baltic cruises that it is good to know about before you cruise.

In this post, we will explore popular questions like, When should you go? What should you pack? Which cruise lines are best and lots more.

Baltic Cruise Tip #1: Don’t Bring Every Currency

Which currencies do you need for a baltic cruise.

Many Baltic countries accept Euros while others will take local currencies such as British Pounds, Danish Krone or Swedish Krona. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, especially in cruise ports so it may be worth putting the majority of purchases on your card.

I have been on full cruises and never once needed to use cash.

Baltic cruises visit multiple countries, all of which have their own currencies. I wouldn’t suggest that you keep withdrawing and exchanging currencies because not only is this time-consuming but you can also lose quite a bit of money if the exchange rates aren’t favourable.

In some places, countries that don’t use the Euros will actually take Euros as an alternative.

Many of the countries visited on a Baltic cruise take Euros, so I would recommend that you do take some cash in the form of Euros and use a credit or debit card in the other countries.

It’s always important to have some small coins (Euros are usually fine) for things like public toilets.

In a lot of Europe, there is a charge to use public toilets so it’s always better to keep a few Euro coins in your purse. An alternative, of course, is to find a McDonald’s or Starbucks where you’ll almost always find a toilet that you can use for free.

I recently took a Christmas Markets cruise and found the thing applies in Germany. I had to have coins for the public toilets or nip back to the ship. Luckily River Ships dock in the centre of town, so it wasn’t too far to walk!

Which Countries do Baltic Cruises Visit?

The ‘Baltics’ when referenced in regards to cruising are any countries that border the Baltic Sea. Baltic cruises often visit Poland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Denmark.

The ‘Baltic states’ are slightly different and refer to only Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Popular cruise ports include Oslo, Stockholm, Riga, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Tallinn, Warnemunde, Gdansk and Hamburg,

A Typical Baltic Cruise Itinerary

A typical Baltic cruise itinerary would be either a week or two weeks long. There are frequent Baltic cruises from the UK, most of which are two weeks long and visit ports along the Baltic Sea before returning.

It is possible to take a Baltic cruise which doesn’t visit the UK, these tend to be shorter and may start somewhere like Copenhagen or Amsterdam.

Baltic Cruise Tip #2: Book an Itinerary With Overnight Stays

It is very common for a Baltic cruise to include an overnight stay at some point of the cruise.

It is worth checking that the times of your port stay are useful for you though. I recently took another cruise which featured ‘two days in Amsterdam’ it docked at 3 pm – and left at 10 am the next day!

Baltic Cruise Tip #3: Prepare to be Busy!

Baltic cruises are very port intensive and will visit a new port almost every day. In a 14-night Baltic cruise you may have 2 or 3 sea days but generally speaking, as the countries are quite close together, you won’t spend a long time at sea.

Baltic cruises provide passengers with the opportunity to visit multiple countries in a relatively short period of time.

During a 14-night Baltic cruise, it is possible to visit 8 or so different countries.

If you were to try to replicate this type of trip on land, it would be very expensive and very time-consuming.

When is The Best Time to Take a Baltic Cruise?

The best time to take a Baltic cruise is in July and August. May, June, September and October are also fairly popular. Winter months are generally less desirable because the weather is poor, but cruises do still sail in the Baltics year-round.

July and August are the most expensive months, with cruises out of this season being considerably cheaper.

Baltic Cruise Tip #4: Cruise Between July and August For The Best Weather

In the summer months of July and August, there will be the greatest number of cruise lines sailing the Baltics.

This does mean that passengers have more choice of who to sail – with but it can also mean that the cruise ports are busy.

It isn’t uncommon for 3 or 4 cruise ships to dock in the same place at the same time.

What Is The Weather Like on a Baltic Cruise?

The weather on a Baltic cruise is generally mild. In summer temperatures may rise in places to 80F but in winter temperatures can drop to 30F. Rain is common year-round.

There is no guarantee of good weather even in the summer months.

If you really do care about having warm sunny weather, the Mediterranean or Canary Islands may be a better option for you than the Baltics -that said, you could get lucky!

I’ve been on two Baltic cruises and both times we had rain almost every day. I took a two-week Marella cruise to the Baltics in 2018 and although we travelled in September, we had some really bad weather.

We had some really lovely weather too!

On a few days of the cruise, I did manage to sit out on the balcony and try to do a little bit of sunbathing. It wasn’t really ever ‘hot’ – but compared to the UK, it did feel warm!

Baltic Cruise Tip #5: Consider a Walking Tour or Bike Tour

We visited Tallinn in Estonia which was brilliant, we took a bike tour but it rained continually.

We were soaked through and the ink genuinely came off of my socks and dyed my feet funny colors.

That said, we had an amazing time and it was a great way to explore.

My coat and cardigan in the photo below aren’t usually that colour, they’re soaked. I particularly like the people in the rain ponchos in the background, I think that says a lot.

Baltic Cruise Tip #6: Pack a Waterproof Coat

On a Baltic cruise, you should pack the following:

• A waterproof coat
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Clothing essentials
• Any medicines needed
• Passport/Documentation/Visa(s)
• Travel adapters

The most important things you can pack for a Baltic cruise are a good comfortable pair of walking shoes and a coat.

Regardless of the time of year that you visit the Baltics, you may get rain, so it’s much better to be prepared.

Pack clothes which you find comfortable, as you’ll probably be doing a lot of walking.

Clothing Essentials

As far as clothes go, I’d recommend you start by packing more underwear than the number of days that you’re away, I always do this. I’m not too sure why but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Baltic Cruise Tip #7: Pack Travel Wash

If you bring travel wash on a cruise you can wash some little items in the sink if you are running low on clothes.

Cruise ships do have laundries but these can be expensive and it’s usually easier if you just want to wash a few small items, to do so in the sink. I use a travel wash, like the one below:

For a 14-night cruise, I always try to pack :

• 10 t-shirts/shirts/blouses
• 4 jeans/trousers
• 4 shorts (if warm)
• 6-day dresses (if warm)
• 6 evening dresses
• 3 hoodies/sweaters/jumpers
• 2 smaller cardigans/cover-ups
• 2 pairs of tights/leggings
• 1 set of pajamas
• 2 sets of gym wear

Baltic Cruise Tip #8: Pack Multiple Pairs of Shoes

When it comes to packing, the most important thing is to pack comfortable shoes.

I’d recommend at least one or possibly two pairs of sneakers/trainers/walking boots. During my last Baltic cruise, I got so wet that it took my shoes days to dry out. Having another pair that you can change into is always a good idea.

I’d also recommend you pack another pair of flat shoes for daily walking around the ship or in port.

I usually bring a pair of lightweight (cheap) trainers/sneakers as a backup .

Packing a pair of heels or similar for evenings onboard is usually a good idea. Most cruise lines have some form of formal nights and having at least one, or maybe two pairs of ‘nice’ shoes to wear in the evenings is good.

If The Weather is Warm, Consider Sandals

If you are going to be travelling in summer, I’d recommend that you bring some sandals or flip-flops.

It may be worth packing 2 or so pairs so that you can alternate if needed.

As far as walking goes I’d say that Baltic cruises are one of the most intensive. Most countries visited on Baltic cruises are so easy to explore by foot, that it would be a shame not to because you haven’t packed the right footwear.

Baltic Cruise Tip #9: Pack a Small Umbrella

In addition to your coat, it’s probably a good idea to pack a small umbrella.

It might sound strange that I’m telling you to pack an umbrella and I’m now going to tell you to pack sunscreen but trust me, you might need that too!

The Baltics provide extremes of all weather and it can change with very little warning.

In Tallinn, Estonia, it rains roughly every 3 days – even in the summer season.

Don’t Forget The Essentials

As far as cruise essentials go, make sure that you pack things like your passport, travel documents, luggage tags, travel adapters, phone, camera, credit/debit card, chargers, medicines, and toiletries!

What Should You Do in Baltic Cruise Ports?

Of course, the activities offered do vary by cruise ports, but there are some things which you are able to do in almost all Baltic cruise ports.

Baltic Cruise Tip #10: Take a Hop-on Hop-off Bus

In almost all ports on a Baltic cruise, you’ll find Hop-on Hop-off buses. I’m personally a big fan of Hop-on Hop-off buses because they provide you with everything that you need for a day of exploring.

When you cruise, you will usually only have one day in port, so it’s important to make the most of it.

A daily Hop-on Hop-off bus ticket usually costs around $40/£30 and this is a 24-hour ticket. 48-hour and 72-hour tickets are usually available for longer stays.

Hop-on Hop-off buses allow you to explore a city on set routes.

Most Hop-on Hop-off bus providers will have a couple of routes and these are usually identified by colours or letters.

The best part about Hop-on Hop-off buses is that you can join the bus for any part of the journey you want and repeatedly get on/off the bus.

The buses usually have commentary in multiple languages so that you can learn some facts about the place that you are visiting.

I did this in Stockholm and learned that Stockholm translates to ‘Log Island’ – Fun fact!

Baltic Cruise Tip #11: Take a Walking Tour

There are usually walking tours you can join in most countries in the Baltic cities.

Some have a charge and some are free, on the free tours, you are usually expected to give a tip, which makes sense.

An alternative is to download a walking tour to your phone. If you’re from the UK or most of Europe you can use the mobile data on your phone in Europe at no extra cost.

Walking is one of my favorite ways to stay healthy on a cruise, many people worry about putting on weight on a cruise but to be honest I genuinely feel as though I come back healthier!

Baltic Cruise Tip #12: Use Public Transport

Most countries visited on a Baltic cruise have relatively cheap and easy-to-use public transport systems.

If there is a particular thing you want to see or do, it’s usually possible to buy a bus or train ticket and make your own way to the attraction.

You really do see the country that you’re visiting when you travel on public transport, I much prefer it to sitting on an organised bus excursion with other British people.

It’s usually a good idea to bring some cash for things like public transport, although this isn’t necessary for most places. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most ports.

Booking attractions ahead of time can also save you money, so it is worth considering this. Make the booking early in the morning once you’ve docked – just in case the cruise ship cancels the port for any reason.

Baltic Cruise Tip #13: Consider a Cruise Line Excursion

If there is something in particular you would like to do. it might be worth considering a cruise line excursion.

Cruise line excursions can be quite expensive but they are often the easiest way to explore a place. Most cruise line excursions are based, at least in some parts, on buses.

Groups will usually be of at least 20+ passengers and you might end up following a tour guide around with a flag on a stick.

Baltic Cruise Tip #14: Consider Independent Excursions

Another option is to take independent excursions with other companies. These are often much cheaper than booking through the cruise line but it does take a bit more organisation.

There are lots and lots of companies in the Baltics which provide independent excursions.

The main downside of booking excursions independently is if your cruise port is cancelled you won’t get your money back – although some do offer a money-back guarantee.

Baltic Cruise Tip #15: Consider a Cruise With NCL, Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O, Marella or MSC

Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean, P&O, Marella , and MSC are good options for Baltic cruises. They offer itineraries in a variety of lengths starting and ending in multiple countries. 

I've been on 5 MSC cruises in Europe and the US. Cruising with friends and family, I've always had a great time!

Several luxury cruise lines also cruise the Baltics which usually offer smaller less well-known cruise ports.

Azamara, Silversea, Oceana, and Seabourn are just a few of the cruise lines that cruise this route.

Choosing a cruise line can be a very confusing process, there are so many things to consider. Dress codes, dining, entertainment, and more. To help you to find the perfect cruise line for you, I’ve put together this video:

A Cheaper Alternative To A Baltic Cruise

The Baltic Sea is crossed by various ferry routes, and you can cheaply and easily hop from one country to another.

I took a cruise with Silja Line, onboard Silja Symphony. She is a giant ferry, with a central street – similar to those found on Royal Caribbean and MSC cruise ships.

The ship I took sailed from Stockholm in Sweden to Helsinki in Finland and back. It cost around £22/$28 per person, per night.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Europe has so much to offer by cruise ship that it can be a challenge to decide where to start. Should you choose a Baltic cruise versus a Mediterranean cruise for your sailing abroad? How do you decide?

A Mediterranean cruise is often the first dip into European waters many travelers take. It’s an easy choice because there are many options, including cruises to France, Spain and Italy on familiar big-ship cruise lines with reasonable prices and relatively easy flights. Mix ancient sightseeing and culinary sampling with a dash of beach time, all while surrounded by stunning blue seas, and you’ve got the essence of a summer cruise in the Med.

Baltic cruises are not about beach time, and most of the historical sights are anything but ancient. What you’ll find instead is incredible architecture, garden tours and deep dives into modern European history, as well as access to everything offered in some of Europe’s most vibrant cities in Germany, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. As with the Mediterranean, the region is rich with foods and beverages to taste. Think Danish pastries, German beer and Swedish meatballs.

Let’s look at what each of these two distinct European cruise choices offers to help you decide which one you’d like more.

Mediterranean vs. Baltic on the map

The Mediterranean Sea lies south of Europe, and though it’s connected to the Atlantic Ocean, it is almost entirely enclosed by the European, African and Asian continents. It comprises 11 smaller seas, which can confuse things when you shop for cruises; itineraries are sometimes labeled according to the smaller sea. In general, though, any ocean cruise with ports in Spain, France, Italy, Monaco, Greece or Turkey are Mediterranean cruises.

Eight northern European Union countries and Russia surround the Baltic Sea. It connects to the Atlantic via the North Sea at Denmark. Baltic cruises, particularly the longest itineraries, may begin or end outside the Baltic Sea itself, adding bonus countries to the itinerary. Countries most Baltic cruises visit include Denmark, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, plus Sweden and Finland. Longer cruises might also include Norway and United Kingdom countries outside the Baltic Sea.

Cruise itineraries

Mediterranean cruise itineraries generally are seven nights or longer. Peak season is summer, but it’s possible to find Mediterranean cruises during every month of the year. Summer daytime temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit but can spike well into the 90s in July and August in some locations. Spring and fall cruises in the Med have more moderate weather.

You’ll find a wide range of choices of departure ports and countries your ship will visit. The most flexible departure ports in terms of what direction the cruise will take you are Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia) and Athens (Piraeus) — all of which serve as departure or return ports for cruises in all directions across the Mediterranean.

Depart from Venice (Ravenna or Trieste) to sail to destinations along the Adriatic; in addition to Italy, your itinerary may include Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece.

Because there are so many ports in the Mediterranean, sea days are generally limited to one per weeklong sailing, and many itineraries lack sea days entirely.

One-way itineraries that depart from one port and end in another are common in the Mediterranean, allowing your cruise to visit more ports in more countries than you might on a round-trip route. This can, however, complicate flight plans and may make flights more expensive than round-trip fares — something to pay attention to as you shop for your cruise.

The bonus of these one-way routes is that they are easily combined into longer cruises. A cruise that starts in Barcelona and ends in Athens can be combined with a second cruise from Athens to Istanbul or back to Barcelona. Some lines — such as Viking , Holland America , Princess , Windstar and Oceania — pre-package multiple one-way cruises to make the planning easy. On other lines, like Azamara , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian , you can book two (or more) cruises back-to-back to create your own extended voyage.

Lines that primarily offer round-trip cruises in the Mediterranean include Virgin Voyages , Celebrity and Carnival . Disney Cruise Line also offers round-trip itineraries, including some of the shortest cruises in the Med, with four- and five-night sailings during the line’s brief season there each summer.

Cruisers who count continents can check off three big ones with a carefully planned extended cruise in the region. One way to add Asia to your list is to spend time in Istanbul on both sides of the Bosphorus River, as it’s the dividing line between the continents. Alternatively, the Turkish ports of Kusadasi, Bodrum and Izmir are among those commonly visited in Asia.

Finding a Mediterranean itinerary that visits Africa can be a bit more challenging, but the ports to look for include Alexandria, Egypt; Casablanca, Morocco; and Tunis, Tunisia. If you want to hit three continents in one voyage, look for 10- to 14-night itineraries on lines such as Norwegian, Celebrity and Holland America.

Baltic cruise itineraries are also mostly seven nights or longer. Because the Baltic countries are farther north, chilly weather is possible even in mid-summer in the Baltic. Average high temperatures in Copenhagen, for example, are barely 70 degrees Fahrenheit during June, July and August. Helsinki is a degree or two cooler. Because of the climate, cruise ships only sail these waters from April through September.

Departure ports may be cities located on the Baltic, like Copenhagen, Stockholm or Warnemunde, Germany, or outside the Baltic, as in Southampton, England, or Amsterdam and Rotterdam in The Netherlands. As with Mediterranean cruises, you’ll find a mix of round-trip cruises beginning and ending in the same port city and one-way itineraries — many of which begin outside the Baltic Sea and end at a Baltic port.

The opportunity to create longer journeys by connecting multiple cruises is available in the Baltic. Those usually include Northern European or United Kingdom add-ons before or after your Baltic cruise. Think Stockholm to Edinburgh, Scotland. After a thorough cruise of the Baltic Sea, the itinerary might include multiple stops in the fjords of Norway before ending in the U.K. Baltic cruises that begin or end outside the confines of the Baltic Sea often have at least one day at sea, sometimes more.

Country counters rejoice! A solid itinerary within the Baltic can add eight countries to your list; add-ons in the North Sea will get you another handful if you plan carefully.

Prior to March 2022, Baltic cruises often included a stop in the Russian port of St. Petersburg. Currently, no cruise lines catering to Westerners call on Russian ports.

Ports of call

The list of ports of call in the Mediterranean is lengthy, ranging from European mainland ports like Dubrovnik, Zadar, Naples, Nice and Istanbul to popular ports on the islands of Sardinia, Corfu, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, all of which can accommodate ships of all sizes.

Smaller cruise ships have an even greater range of options. Ports you may never have heard of — such as Durres, Albania or Bonifacio, France, on the island of Corsica — are listed in the itineraries of small-ship lines like Emerald and Ponant. Ports you’ve only dreamt of visiting, like Capri, Amalfi or Jerusalem, are surprisingly accessible on several cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean, including Windstar, Azamara and Celebrity.

Ports of call in the Baltic include recognizable city names like Copenhagen, Helsinki, Gdansk and Stockholm, along with cities you may be less familiar with — Visby, Tallinn and Riga, in Sweden, Estonia and Latvia, respectively.

Copenhagen is rich in architecture and seaside charm. Warnemunde, Germany, is the gateway port to Berlin. Cruise lines often schedule overnight stays there to allow ample time to explore the city, a train ride away from the port. Stockholm is another Baltic port where some ships overnight, allowing passengers to enjoy the city’s nightlife.

Shore excursions and activities

The range of shore activities in the Mediterranean is vast. In Rome, Naples, Athens, Nafplion, Crete, Corinth, Olympia, Santorini and Kusadasi, you can explore ancient Greek and Roman historical sites. In Istanbul, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Florence and Venice, tours focus on more recent art, architecture and history.

You’ll find vineyard and winery tours from almost every port in Italy and along the French Riviera (like Marseilles). Olive farm tours are popular from most ports of call in Greece but don’t rule out Greek wineries if your cruise itinerary takes you there.

Foodie tours are available in almost every port in the Mediterranean. The best include food-themed walking tours in Athens, truffle hunting tours from Livorno, Italy, and tapas tours in Barcelona. Or, you can do what I do and make it a point to sample local fare like pizza and gelato in every port.

Active tours in the Mediterranean include abundant choices for hiking and biking. If you’re itching to dip your toes into the blue Mediterranean waters, you’ll find beaches on almost all the Greek islands. Not every ship offers beachy shore excursions, so you may be on your own getting to them.

The easiest beach excursions are on Santorini, Crete and Mykonos. The most stunning beach I’ve ever seen is Myrtos Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia. It’s not near the cruise port, but half-day excursions are available to take you there.

And let’s not forget the beaches of the French Riviera or Barcelona’s beautiful stretches of sand.

The most surprising beaches in the Mediterranean include those along the crystal-clear waters of the upper Adriatic. Trieste (where some ships dock for Venice), Koper in Slovenia and Zadar in Croatia all have beaches (some pebble rather than sand) accessible from the cruise ports. If more active water sports are your thing, boating, snorkeling and even scuba diving are easily arranged on Santorini, Crete and Kefalonia and in Zadar.

Baltic destinations also offer beaches and watersports, but you’re more likely to find a scenic boat ride than jetskiing, and beaches are more likely to be enjoyed through windy walks along the shore than sunbathing and swimming. If the weather is suitable, the best beaches are in Copenhagen, Warnemunde and Stockholm. Boat rides, both slow scenic cruises and thrilling speed boat rides are popular throughout the Baltic. Boats are the ideal way to experience Copenhagen.

Land-based activities in the Baltic lean toward city tours, either via hop-on-hop-off buses or sometimes walking tours. Expect landmarks and museums of all sorts, many focusing on local events or areas of importance. Riga, Lithuania, and Tallinn, Estonia, both have museums focused on the Soviet occupation of those countries, for example.

Lighthouses and castles are some landmarks you can visit in the Baltic. Look for castles and fortresses in Gdansk, Copenhagen and Helsinki. Lighthouse excursions are possible in Kiel and Warnemunde, Germany. You can visit a medieval village in Old Town in Tallinn and a Viking village near Copenhagen.

Active tours on Baltic cruises include hiking and biking, available in almost every port. Kayaking is often easy to arrange if the weather turns out nice.

Winery visits are possible from ports in Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia and Poland but may not be offered by your cruise ship. You may have to seek them out and arrange your own tour guide or transportation. Brewery tours are considerably easier to arrange throughout the Baltic. Foodie tours include those that focus on cheese, pastries, meats and seafood. Walking food tours are possible in the larger cities, and farm visits with lunch are a popular way to experience the region’s cuisine.

Bottom line: Baltic vs. Mediterranean cruises

What you want to experience on a European cruise can help determine whether you’d enjoy a Mediterranean or a Baltic cruise more. Both regions are loaded with visits to stunning European ports where you can experience the food, history and culture through tours and by simply walking the streets mingling with locals.

On a Mediterranean cruise, you gain the ability to add one or even two continents to your list of places traveled to, but if you’re trying to push your country count higher, a Baltic cruise can help you out based on the sheer number of countries it’s possible to visit on a single cruise.

Weather in the Med is more likely to be warm and sunny, allowing for more time enjoying water sports or lounging on a beach. But if escaping blistering summer heat at home is your chief objective, the crisp air in the Baltic may be what you need to reset on vacation.

Both regions have dozens of cruise lines to choose from, starting with mainstream lines you may already know but also including premium and luxury lines you may be longing to try. Transportation to and from Europe can be slightly easier and cheaper to Mediterranean departure ports when compared to some Baltic ports, but there are options for round-trip Baltic cruises from London that serve as a workaround.

The bottom line, then, is that it comes down to personal preferences. Ancient history or something more recent? Beach time or intensive sightseeing? Sample some of the world’s best wines or the world’s best beers? Either way you go, you can expect the cruise adventure of a lifetime.

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. Oceania Cruises’ Vista

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I wish I'd known before sailing in the Mediterranean.

• I've been on 50 cruises around the world and took my first Mediterranean route last year.
• Picking the right time of the season to go can make a big difference in your trip.
• Before packing, I always check to see if any of the experiences I've booked have a dress code.

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations , I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

Alaska cruise packing list: 36 must-have items.

Your cruise packing list for Alaska will look a little bit different than the one you'd use for the Caribbean.

Alaska is one of the most stunning places to visit on Earth. The vast pristine wilderness, ever-changing landscapes and opportunity to view wildlife – including bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, and marine mammals such as orcas and humpback whales – are just a few of the reasons it's one of the most popular cruise destinations.

An Alaska cruise , however, can be difficult to pack for with big swings in temperatures, rainy days in the forecast and even experiencing four seasons in one day ashore. You'll need a strategic plan to pack for your trip especially if you're cruising during the colder months of April and October at the tail ends of the Alaska cruising season . U.S. News has compiled a list of essential items and ones you'll be glad you brought to round out your cruise packing list.

For the cabin  

Portable humidifier.

It gets cold in Alaska, especially at nighttime, so you may need to turn on the heat in your stateroom. If you've traveled in the winter on a cruise ship, you'll know that the dry warm air combined with the airtight seal in the cabin can cause several issues, including difficulty sleeping and dry skin. The MOVTIP Portable Mini Humidifier ( less than $30 on Amazon ) is compact and lightweight at 9.5 ounces, so you can easily pack it into your carry-on or checked luggage . It has two mist modes, acts as a nightlight in your cabin and has an automatic shut-off when the water level is too low.

Magnetic hooks

A fun fact: The walls of a cruise ship are made of metal, so you can use them for extra hanging space when you bring along magnetic hooks for the trip. There are plenty of plain silver magnets on Amazon to choose from, but DIYMAG heavy-duty magnetic hooks are available in bold colors like green, red and purple. That way, each person can have their own color-coded hook. The extra hanging space will come in handy with all the layers you'll need for your cruise. You'll also appreciate having the hooks for wet gear after shore excursions .

Motion sickness remedies

Sea-Bands, which you can find on Amazon for less than $15 , are a must-have item if you're prone to motion sickness. A drug-free alternative to medicines like Dramamine, they use an acupressure point to minimize nausea and vomiting. You never know when you'll encounter rough seas, especially if you're on a small vessel . You can even get motion sickness riding in one of the whale watching boats, so it's best to come prepared. Be sure to start wearing the bands before you get on the ship.

If you need something stronger than the Sea-Bands to quell the nausea, Dramamine has a less drowsy version that's recommended by pharmacists. Another motion sickness alternative is to wear the prescription scopolamine transdermal patch, which lasts up to three days, behind your ear. Ginger chews are an option for mild cases of upset stomach; you can purchase a pack of them on Amazon for $5 .

It's a good idea to keep moisturizing eye drops in your toiletry bag , backpack or handbag, especially if you're prone to dry eye. The cabins on the ship can get warm and arid, as mentioned above, particularly when you need to turn on the heat. Systane on-the-go vials are an excellent choice for hydration. Lumify is another option if your eyes have a problem with redness.

Alaskan cruises are a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers, so you'll want to record every moment of your adventure. Wrinkle release spray

Travel irons are not permitted on cruise ships, so a travel-size bottle of Downy's Wrinkle Release Plus spray comes in handy for getting rid of wrinkles. It also acts as an odor eliminator and static remover. To remove wrinkles, it works best if you spritz the garment first and then hang it in the shower so the steam can work its magic, too. For tougher wrinkles in fabrics like linen, you might need to send the garment out for pressing. If you do, be sure to give it at least a 24-hour turnaround time if you're planning to wear the item on a specific evening.

Travel-size bathroom sprays

There are several companies that make travel-size bathroom sprays, including Poo-Pourri, Fresh Wave and Flushie. They are all available on Amazon. If you prefer aromas beyond the traditional lavender vanilla and citrus scents, Poo-Pourri sells its 2-ounce packable sprays in pumpkin spice, apple, coconut and more.

Over-the-door organizer

It's best to stay organized when you're on a cruise, especially if you're not traveling solo . Storage space is limited in the closet and in the bathroom, so you'll want to keep your items separate. An over-the-door organizer, such as Bagsmart's hanging toiletry bag ( less than $30 on Amazon ), is an excellent choice for securing smaller items, such as jewelry, lip balm and travel-size sunscreen. The clear, zippered pockets are also large enough to accommodate full-size moisturizers and other makeup items.

Keep your cords, battery chargers and any items for your camera – like SD cards – in one place with this electronics organizer from Bagsmart . It's easy to pack in your carry-on and even carry in your backpack or daypack if you'll need access to some of the items during the day. Everything is visible, zipped up and secure so you won't lose anything either in the room or in transit.

Flip-flops are great to have to walk around the stateroom, especially if your accommodations don't come with a plush robe and slippers. It's nice to shed heavier boots and shoes after exploring outside and have something easy to slip on your feet. Reef makes all types of flip-flops, and you can purchase the basic styles on Amazon for less than $35 a pair .

For the ship and onshore excursions  

Disinfecting wipes.

If you don't like the tacky feeling that hand sanitizers can leave on your hands, consider packing antibacterial wipes such as Wet Ones . They kill 99.99% of the germs, so they're also useful for wiping down surfaces (think tables in the buffet restaurant). These wipes are perfect to pack for an excursion or to use while enjoying the ship if you want a quick refresh.

It doesn't have to be sunny outside for you to need protection from the sun. You'll be outdoors a lot in Alaska and will want to use sunscreen with at least an SPF 15, as recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Reef-safe sunscreen is better for you, the environment and the wildlife as it eliminates the use of certain chemicals and ingredients. Save the Reef's website has a list of reef-safe and ocean-friendly brands that include: All Good ( available in travel-size tubes on Amazon ), Mama Kuleana and Badger ( also sold on Amazon ).

Insect repellent

The height of mosquito season runs from the second week of June to the end of July. Pesky bugs are not typically as bad in the places where most tourists visit, but that will depend on the type of cruise you take. DEET-based sprays, like Cutter Backwoods Repellent are the most effective against mosquitoes, but there are alternatives. Badger makes an organic DEET-free repellent with lemongrass and citronella, and it comes in a travel-size.

Hiking poles

Lightweight collapsible hiking poles are important to pack, especially if you're going on adventurous treks looking for wildlife in the woods. Covacure's set of two trekking poles costs about $35 on Amazon . They're made of aircraft-grade 7075 aluminum, so they're strong, and they fold down to less than 14 inches each. They also have foam handles, three types of rubber tips for the poles and adjustable wrists straps. The set comes with a carry bag.

A dry bag is essential – particularly for water-based shore excursions – if you're carrying a camera, a cellphone or other items that can't get wet. HEETA's 5-liter waterproof dry bag ( on Amazon for about $15 ) comes in a wide selection of colors. There are also larger sizes, depending on your needs. The clear plastic allows you to see what's inside, and you can carry the bag over the shoulder or as a backpack.

Rain jacket and pants

The weather can be unpredictable in Alaska, with rain occurring at any time. In the Inside Passage, August and September are typically the rainiest months. In the Southwest part of the state, which includes Katmai National Park, it rains nearly half the month from May to September. If you want to go, travelers during those months especially will want to pack some rain protection for the outdoors; to stay dry, invest in fabric that is water-repellent and not just water-resistant. Columbia has a selection of rain jackets and rain pants with everything from lightweight packable shells to pieces with fleece lining for colder weather.

Silk thermal long underwear

Silk thermals are a great base layer for the weather in Alaska when you need extra warmth. The 100% silk interlock fabric is lightweight, breathable and thin enough to fit under other layers. It also naturally wicks moisture. L.L.Bean's collection of silk thermals includes tops and bottoms for both men and women.

Mid-layers are also known as insulating layers, which include fleece and windproof or insulated jackets. These garments should be breathable, quick-drying and able to keep you warm by trapping body heat without making you feel cold or clammy. Helly Hansen makes a lightweight, zippered Polartec Daybreaker Fleece Jacket for women and men that comes in a variety of colors. If you would rather wear a jacket for a mid-layer, the Gore-Tex website has a large selection of windproof and insulated jackets in collaboration with brands like Marmot, Patagonia and Quicksilver.

Waterproof shoes and boots

You'll want several T-shirts for relaxing in your stateroom and layering under your clothes. An old favorite are the Pima cotton, short-sleeved crewnecks from L.L. Bean . Bathing suit

While you may not go swimming ashore in Alaska, there's a good chance that you'll want to check out the pools or spa while you're on the ship. Warm hat and gloves

You can layer clothes underneath in the morning as you head outdoors, then remove the jacket as it gets warmer throughout the day. Casual clothes

You'll want to bring lightweight layers for daytime excursions off the ship. You can mix and match these pieces throughout the week to keep packing at a minimum. In the evenings, you'll want to dress up a bit more in smart casual attire. It's best to check with your cruise line to see what's permitted in the evenings (for example, if men need a jacket to dine in a specialty restaurant), especially if you're on a luxury cruise ship .

Formal clothes and themed evening attire

Some cruise lines, such as Holland America Line, still have formal evenings. It's not required to dress up, but many women wear cocktail attire and men don their suits for the evening. You'll also want to check with your cruise line to see if there are any theme parties on your voyage. If you're on a family-friendly voyage with Disney Cruise Line , you may have a "Freezing the Night Away" theme party with Anna and Elsa and the other characters from "Frozen." Look online or check with your cruise company to see what clothes you need to bring to join in the fun on your cruise.

Reusable water bottle

Ditch the plastic and pack a reusable water bottle that you can fill up at onboard water stations before heading off the ship. Amazon has plenty of options to choose from, including colorful soft silicone stainless steel bottles from Ello Cooper in three sizes that come with a straw, a handle and a leakproof locking lid.

Lightweight folding daypack

The Zomake folding daypack will become a regular item in your suitcase, no matter where you go. The 30-liter size weighs about 12 ounces and folds up into a compact pouch. The nylon construction is durable and there are plenty of exterior pockets – there's even an interior pocket with deep storage for items like a wallet or phone. Lightweight mirrorless camera and lens

Today's smartphones have impressive cameras, but most phone cameras won't have the same clarity and quality as a regular camera. If you don't want to carry a heavy DSLR camera and lens around on your Alaskan adventure, there are other options. While you may have some up-close encounters with wildlife – such as whales coming alongside your boat on a whale watching excursion – most of the wildlife viewing will be at a distance. A good pair of lightweight binoculars is key if you don't want to miss views like bears fishing for salmon along a river or a moose wading through a faraway lake. The type of carry-on you use will depend on how you pack. You're also not allowed to bring coffee makers and other small electrical items. In addition, don't bring a hair dryer as they are usually provided in your stateroom.

Alcohol and spirits

Some cruise lines permit guests to bring one or two bottles of wine or Champagne on board the ship, but hard alcohol is almost always not allowed. If you have a beverage package or are sailing on an all-inclusive line , alcoholic beverages will be covered. Check with your cruise line before you sail to see what you can bring on board the ship.

CBD and marijuana

Cannabis is illegal in the U.S., and many cruise ships do not allow any form of CBD, including gummies, oils and lotions. It's best to play it safe and leave these items at home. You don't want to risk having the items thrown away or, in the worst case, not being allowed to board the ship.
