The Best Wineries to Visit in Woodinville

By Sean P. Sullivan January 11, 2023

wine tasting tours woodinville

Bordeaux-style wines meet picnic priorities at Matthews Winery.

Image: Brandon Hill

Western Washington's  epicenter of wine dates back to the 1970s. Today, change is sweeping the area, from new tasting districts to the uncertain future of Chateau Ste. Michelle. In other words, Woodinville has lots of exciting new developments, but also some reasons to return, time and again, to taste.

Hollywood District  /   Warehouse District  /  Downtown and Woodin Creek Village / Eastern Washington Outposts

Hollywood District

Betz family winery.

Now firmly in its third decade, Betz Family devotes itself to high-end Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines. The cabernet sauvignon is exquisite. Four syrahs showcase differences in the state’s best vineyards and appellations, while the grenache-heavy Besoleil drinks like a cup of fresh fruit. The tasing room is currently only open to members of the winery’s list.

Chateau Lill

Greg Lill has reclaimed the estate-style building that once housed his original winery, DeLille Cellars. Today it’s a scenic hub for weddings and events, but also conducts tastings of wines sourced from other well-known local wineries, but poured under Chateau Lill’s label. In warmer months, tastings happen in the garden, or you can stroll the property, glass in hand.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery

Yes, some or all of this wine region’s foundational chateau is potentially up for sale, but the winery is committed to its 2023 concert calendar season. And, uncertainty aside, it remains a wonderful place to visit in Woodinville. Throughout its run, Ste. Michelle has been the state’s leader in producing good wines at any price. A spot-on $12 bottle? A stunning single-vineyard sauvignon blanc? The winery has both. Its $10 Dry Riesling is easily the best value in the state if not the country.

Mark Ryan Winery

Winemaker Mark McNeilly made a name for himself in the early 2000s fashioning uniformly excellent red blends, with ripe fruit and hefty tannic structures, from esteemed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard on Red Mountain. He’s still at it; few do it better. This year, the tasting room will relocate to a new building on the campus of the former Redhook Brewery.

Matthews Winery

Matthews is one of the longest tenured wineries in Woodinville. Yes, with its “inspired by Bordeaux” tagline, you know cabernet sauvignon is important here, but the sauvignon blanc is also a standout. The winery recently brought in a new winemaking team from Quilceda Creek .

Novelty Hill–Januik

Sparkman Cellars

Warehouse district, avennia wine.

In just 10 years, Avennia has established itself as one of the state’s top wineries, dedicated to using old vine grapes and picking early, giving the releases a distinctly old-world, savory edge, but with plenty of fruit. Recently the winery has added some Red Mountain offerings to its repertoire.

Kevin White Winery

Owner and winemaker Kevin White’s day job allows him to offer the best quality-to-price wines in the state. But the word is out on his pure, fruit-driven wines. Some, such as the feels-like-stealing ‘Blue Label’ wine, can sell out in less than a week.  A new tasting room offers a gently upgraded experience.

Passing Time Winery

Pomum cellars/idlico, quiddity wines.

Sightglass Cellars

Sean Boyd, previously the longtime winemaker at Woodinville Wine Cellars, excels with stainless steel–aged sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, as well as cultishly good red wines.

Two Vintners

W.t. vintners.

Downtown and Woodin Creek Village

Baer winery, brian carter cellars.

This winery, now open in the new-ish Woodin Creek Village , dedicates itself to the art of blending. The flagship cabernet sauvignon–based Solesce is one for the cellar. That may not sound radical, but the winemaker here likes to experiment, exploring styles from Spain, Italy, Bordeaux, the Rhône, and beyond.

More Great Woodinville Tasting Rooms

Can’t make it to Walla Walla ? Plenty of wineries from Eastern Washington have set up satellite locations around here.

wine tasting tours woodinville

Walla Walla–based Long Shadows added this outpost on our side of the mountains.

Image: Courtesy Long Shadows

  • Long Shadows Great wine in a handsome tasting room.
  • Fidelitas Wines One of the new occupants of the former Redhook Brewery campus.
  • Bookwalter Winery The Tri-Cities–area   winery is known for its high-end reds and whites.
  • L’Ecole No 41 The stalwart added its first non–Walla Walla tasting room in downtown Woodinville.
  • Valdemar Estates Part of Walla Walla’s impressive new guard also has a downtown location.
  • Pepper Bridge Another great high-end Walla Walla winery set up shop behind the Hollywood Schoolhouse.

Methods :  To compile this list, Sean P. Sullivan selected wineries based on the overall quality of their wines, focusing largely on those that are local to that area, versus satellite tasting rooms.

Top Woodinville Wineries & Tasting Rooms To Visit in the Hollywood District

6 Best Woodinville Wineries To Visit: Hollywood District

Just 30 minutes from the city of Seattle is a quaint little town with a big thirst for wine. Woodinville, Washington is a wine-tasting mecca of sorts for those who appreciate the nuances and charm of Washington wines. Though not many of the wine grapes actually originate from the area itself, as the wet weather that typically encases this region is not ideal for growing grapes, many wineries have established tasting rooms here and source their grapes from the drier regions of the state farther east.

Woodinville, though small, is separated into four distinct districts, each with its own offerings and personality. There are the West Valley, Downtown, Warehouse, and Hollywood Districts that make up the town. You can find wine and wine tasting in each, but today we will focus on the Hollywood District , home to some of the wine industry’s biggest names, as well as some smaller, artisanal wineries that deserve mention. Here are a few great wineries and tasting rooms in Woodinville.

Top Woodinville Wineries To Visit

There are many wineries to enjoy a tasting while visiting Woodinville, but here are some recommendations for your time in the Hollywood District.

DeLille Cellars

14421 Woodinville-Redmond Rd NE

Woodinville, WA 98072

(425) 489-0544

DeLille Cellars is in the process of renovating and will open a brand new 30,000 sq. ft. tasting room and retail facility at the former Red Hook Brewery in the Fall of 2019, but until then, you may still visit and taste at the Carriage House tasting room. The new facility will have three levels of mostly seated tasting experiences for groups of various sizes. In addition, there will be a wine club rooftop deck that will have some of the best views of the Sammamish Valley and Mount Rainier.

Best Tasting Rooms and Wineries in Woodinville Hollywood District

DeLille Cellars was founded in 1992 as a pioneer in Bordeaux-style blends in Washington State. The winery can now boast over 500 individual 90+ rated wines from leading publications. The grapes are primarily sourced from the Red Mountain AVA and come from acclaimed vineyards such as Ciel du Cheval, Grand Ciel, Upchurch, Red Willow, Sagemoor, Klipsun, Boushey and Harrison Hill. Currently, you can taste wines at DeLille daily until 5PM, but reservations are required for groups of six or more.

Dusted Valley

14465 Woodinville-Redmond Rd.NE

(509) 525 1337

Dusted Valley grapes are sourced from Walla Walla, Washington, but their Woodinville tasting room offers a comfortable environment for experiencing a taste of this family-owned winery. The operation creates about 6,000 cases a year of single varietal Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Syrah, as well as Bordeaux and Rhone-style blends.

Dusted Valley | Best Woodinville Wineries and Tasting Rooms in the Hollywood District

Outside the tasting room, walking paths connect the property to restaurants and other tasting rooms in the District, making Dusted Valley a convenient stop on your tasting tour through Woodinville’s Hollywood District.

Darby Winery

14450 Redmond-Woodinville Rd NE

(425) 233-7879

Darby English is a perfectionist winemaker who utilizes a minimalistic old-school approach to winemaking. He began making wine in 2002 and produced his first commercial batch in 2005. Now, the winery produces 4,000 cases a year of mainly Bordeaux and Rhone-style blends with names like Flipside and Le Deuce from some of the best vineyards in the state, such as Stonetree, Connor Lee, Stillwater Creek, Discovery, and Dineen.

Locals will refer you to go and taste at Darby Winery , as it is considered a local hidden gem. The style of this wine destination is minimalistic and authentic for Winetravelers looking for a more localized experience. At Darby, no two vintages are the same, giving visitors a different experience year after year. There is space at the winery to host a catered event for up to 60 people, including an option for winemaker, Darby English, to offer an educational presentation about the wines to guests. Note that the tasting room is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Contact the winery for more information on tasting and winemaker events.

14111 NE 145th Street

(425) 488-1133

Woodinville is home to Washington State’s premier pioneering winery with roots that date back to 1912 and the time before Prohibition in the United States. The estate was built on land in Woodinville that was acquired in the early 20th Century, but it was not until the late 1960’s that the winery operations revved up under famed winemaker, Andre Tchelistcheff, who introduced premium vinifera wines called Ste. Michelle Vintners. In the late ’70s, a French-style Chateau was built on the property in Woodinville, and Chateau Ste. Michelle as we know it was born.

Visiting Chateau Ste Michelle Winery in Woodinville Washington | Winetraveler.com

The winery has two locations where red and white wine are made separately. White wines are produced on-site at the Woodinville winery location, while red wines are produced at the Canoe Ridge Estate Winery in Eastern Washington.

When visiting Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, reserve extra time, as this visit could last an entire afternoon. Situated on 105 beautiful wooded acres, the tasting facilities at Ste. Michelle are quite impressive. Every day, the winery offers multiple types of tasting experiences in one of its many tasting rooms, geared either toward Ste. Michelle wines, or to some of the other brands associated with the winery in its remarkable international Enoteca located upstairs in the tasting facility.

In addition to various tasting flight options, there are estate tours, blending classes, and regular winery events on the calendar. With so many activities available on-site, it may seem like you can’t possibly enjoy them all with one visit, so it’s a good idea to plan out your time at Ste. Michelle to maximize your experience in the best way that suits your tasting desires. Check the website for special events and scheduled tastings or winery activities.

Woodinville Wine Tasting 2023: 10 Best Wineries to Visit

Woodinville was originally developed as a logging and farming community in the 1880s, but it’s now a renowned and highly acclaimed wine country. The first winery to open the area was Chateau Ste. Michelle in 1976, which encouraged other wineries to open their doors shortly afterwards.

There are well over a hundred wineries in Woodinville now, so there’s no shortage of delicious wines to taste and sample. If you’re looking for top recommendations on which estates to check out in this wine country, you’re in the right place!

What Wine Is Woodinville Known For?

Woodinville is situated in an area within Western Washington and is home to over 130 wineries. The area’s warm, dry climate and gravelly, sandy soils provide the ideal growing conditions for grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot.

Like Washington, Woodinville is most known for its red wine production, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find mouthwatering white and rose wines here. Alongside the aforementioned wine varieties, Woodinville also produces Malbec and Petit Verdot, among others.

Our Top Picks

  • Best Winery Events: Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
  • Best for Wine Tasting: DeLille Cellars
  • Best Winery with Food: Novelty Hill-Januik Winery

Snoqualmie Falls weather & web cam

Experience the essence of Washington’s wild beauty and independent winemaking on this day tour to Snoqualmie Falls and boutique wineries. Join a few other travelers (each trip is ten people or fewer) and a TripAdvisor ‘Hall of Fame’ guide on an exploration of Seattle’s legendary backyard. Don’t worry – we’ll take care of absolutely everything!  Start your tour at 270-foot-high Snoqualmie Falls, where you’ll watch the mighty waters plunge into the river canyon below. The waterfall is nestled among the big evergreen trees of the western Cascade Mountains, which cut across the state and divide the lush coastal climates of the West from the dry, vineyard-rich regions of the East. While there are hundreds are winemakers producing wine in western Washington, they all traverse this range to harvest their grapes in the fall and bring them back West to press, ferment, and blend.  After exploring Snoqualmie Falls, you’ll explore Washington’s viticulture with tastings at two or three local wineries (depending on the season) that deliver on elegance but leave pretense at the door. We hand select our winery partners for their top notch wines of course, but equally as important, for the exclusive experience provided to our guests. You’ll meet with the passionate winemakers themselves and learn about their journey into the industry and inspiration behind their wines. You’ll receive the dedicated time of a tasting room manager to walk us through the art of wine tasting and often we are invited behind the scenes to experience the production space of a working winery —all while tasting award-winning varietals rarely found outside of Washington State. While Washington is the second largest wine-producer in the country, it only exports 1% of its wine! If you’re staying in downtown Seattle (hotel, Airbnb, etc.), we’ll pick you up! We will call the day before your trip to confirm the exact timing. We’re bringing a fresh, local, family-style lunch to pair with our wine tasting! Snacks, sparkling water, and water are provided all day.

Please note that this experience features visits to wineries and tasting rooms. If you are interested in a vineyard experience, we recommend our  Mt. Rainier and Yakima Valley Wine Tasting  trip (available from July thru October).

SAMPLE ITINERARY (May – October)

9:30-10a downtown pickups.

Generally, our last pickup each tour occurs at The Sheraton Grand in Seattle. This isn’t always the case—so check with us—but we consider it a default location for anyone staying outside of downtown. Let our team know where you’re staying and we’ll do everything we can to make your pickup as easy as possible.

10:20a Bellevue Area Pickup (Upon Request)

We’re happy to offer a centralized pickup option en route to Snoqualmie Falls upon request. On our wine tour we can offer pick-ups at:

Bellevue Area:  Hyatt Regency Bellevue. 900 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, WA 98004.

10:45a Big Views and a Nature Walk at Snoqualmie Falls

From here, the course of your day can go so many ways. Your guide will combine group preferences, weather considerations, mixed access & highlights, crowd avoidance, and more to create a lovely day. No two trips are the same! We’re extremely likely to change wineries from day to day to give you the best possible experience.

Q: What is the difference between this tour in the summer vs winter (and why is there a price difference)? A: During the summer, we take advantage on the long sunny days and explore three different wineries on this tour and we expect to return to Seattle around 6:00pm. During the winter months (November – April), when the days are shorter, we visit two Washington wineries and enjoy a more relaxed pace throughout the tour. We expect to return to Seattle around 4:30pm. The price is adjusted based the number of tasting fees included and overall length of the expereince.

Q: How much walking/hiking should I expect on this tour? A: This experience includes an optional 0.7mile walk downhill from the upper to lower falls viewing areas. You will experience some descent on this trail as you haed down to river level, but the good news is you only have to walk one way! Your guide will meet you at the bottom with the van. If anyone does not feel comfortable participating in this walk, you can choose to ride back down with the guide and meet up with the group at the bottom

Q: How many wineries do we visit? A: From May-October, we visit 3 wineries. From November-April, we visit 2 wineries.

Q: Do you recommend we purchase bottles of wine from the wineries? A: If you find a wine or wines that you love (and we think you will!), we absolutely recommend buying a bottle or two of your favorites at each of the wineries! Wine tasting is about exploring and trying new wines you might not have come across before, and by bringing them home with you, you can reminisce about your trip to the Pacific Northwest each time you open a bottle. On top of that, only 1% of wine from Washington (and exclusively from only two wineries) is exported out of the state, so you will never be able to find these blends back home!

Pro-Tip: If you’re worried about traveling with wine, most wineries will ship bottles back home for you or if you fly Alaska Airlines, you can check an entire case of wine for free!

Q: Are children allowed to join this tour? A: Since this tour involves alcoholic beverages, all guests must be 21 years or older. If you are looking for an experience that is great for the whole family, check out some of our other tours like the Deception Pass and Whidbey Island Day Tour ,  the Mount Rainier National Park Tour , or the Leavenworth Winter Experience , all of which are perfect for kids ages 10 and up!
