10 of the Best Things to Do in Arrowtown

Arrowtown is often seen as a day trip destination, but there is heaps to keep you busy, whether you’re there for a few hours or a few days. Towns don’t get much cuter than Arrowtown, and the hills surrounding it are home to heaps of walking trails. We’ve been to Arrowtown half a dozen times over the last few years and I finally feel confident to show you what I consider to be the best things to do in Arrowtown!

This post contains affiliate links. If you click one and book a hotel or tour we’ll get a small cut. It won’t cost you any extra and it helps maintain this website.

Wander the Streets

One of the best parts about a trip to Arrowtown is wandering the picturesque streets . It’s a compact old town and you’ll see heaps of cute historic shops and other buildings. It’s one of the best looking and most atmospheric tourist towns in New Zealand – it does get busy though.

Walking the historic streets of Arrowtown, New Zealand

Walk by the River

The Arrow River sits close to the main street, making it an easy diversion from wandering around town. The Arrow River Trail takes you along the river, past a small waterfall and eventually to a bridge. It’s an easy walk (great for kids) and can also be cycled. Past the bridge is a FWD track to Macetown (more on that later).

Hiking in the Hills

There are lots of tracks in the hills above Arrowtown. I reckon the best one to do is the Sawpit Gully Track , which branches off the Arrow River Trail. The scenery changes quite a lot on this walk, and it loops around to take you back to Arrowtown. Another option is Tobins Track – I thought it was good but not quite on the same level as the Sawpit Gully Track.

You can ride you bike along the Arrow River Trail, along one of the mountain bike tracks above town or on the Arrowtown Bridges Trail, which links Arrowtown to the Kawarau Gorge.

Chinese Settlement

If you’re into history, or you just want to see some interesting old buildings, head for the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement . It was once home to a community of gold miners living and working in extremely harsh conditions. It’s free, quick to look around and it gives a great insight into life as a goldminer back in the late 1800s.

Lakes District Museum

It makes sense that one of the best historic towns in New Zealand would have a good museum to tie it all together, and the Lakes District Museum is certainly that. The displays are informative and they’ve recreated some of the key aspects of the town as they were back then, like shops and bars.

Gold Panning

Apparently there’s still gold in the Arrow River, and tourists are encouraged to rent a pan and try their luck. I’ve seen a few groups of tourists doing this — I’m pretty sure they never find anything too valuable but that’s not really the point. You can rent the gear from the museum if you want to give it a go.

See Autumn Leaves

Arrowtown is one of New Zealand’s most iconic Autumn destinations. Every year, from around mid-April, the town comes alive with the colours of autumn. The hills are full of brightly coloured trees and the trees in town start to drop their leaves – there’s even an Autumn festival every year to celebrate it.

Lake Hayes is a few kilometres away from Arrowtown, just off the main road to Queenstown. It’s a stunning lake, especially on still winter days. You can walk all the way around Lake Hayes, or just park up and enjoy the views.

Hiking Lake Hayes in Winter, Queenstown, New Zealand

Crown Range

The mountain pass between Queenstown and Wānaka, known as the Crown Range , starts close to Arrowtown. It’s one of the highest main roads in New Zealand and views are great – be careful on the tight corners though! I remember driving this road when I was around 18 (and a very inexperienced driver) and it was frightening – it was much easier when we did it recently.

Where to Stay in Arrowtown?

Arrowtown has plenty of great accommodation options including Millbrook Resort |  New Orleans Hotel |  Settlers Cottage Motel   |  Arrowtown Holiday Park |  Arrowtown Motel .

Other Things to Do in Arrowtown

Some of the other things to do in Arrowtown include gold courses (including the famous-in-New Zealand Millbrook), hot air balloon rides, driving the scenic backstreets and shopping in the many boutique shops. You’re also close to the ski fields, as well as all the world-class hikes closer to Queenstown .

Arrowtown VS Queenstown

If you’re spending a few days in the Queenstown area it could be tempting to stay a night or two in Arrowtown. When the day tripping crowds leave, Arrowtown becomes pretty sleepy, so if you’re after somewhere a bit quieter than Queenstown, it’s a good option. It’d also be a good idea to stay the night there if you’re planning to drive to Wānaka early the next day. If nightlife and a wide variety of eating options is important to you, definitely choose Queenstown!

A Day Trip Itinerary

If you’re doing a day trip to Arrowtown from Queenstown, I’d recommend stopping off at Lake Hayes along the way, and then parking up in Arrowtown for a few hours while you explore the town and go for a quick walk by the river / in the hills. On the way back to Queenstown you could take the route which takes you close to Coronet Peak way and drive up there for some awesome views and a gondola ride (in summer).

12 amazing things to do in Arrowtown

Small but surprising, discover the best things to do in Arrowtown.

Located in the South Island, just a 20-minute drive from Queenstown, Arrowtown is a real gem.

Nestled along the Arrow River, this town has a fascinating history as a former gold mining town. For this reason (along with its natural beauty and attractions), it welcomes plenty of visitors every year. Its close proximity to Queenstown makes it the perfect place for a day trip, but there’s also more than enough to do in town if you’d like to spend the night – or perhaps, just use it as a base to escape the hustle and bustle of the neighbouring adventure capital of the world .

If you’re wanting to get involved with the town’s heritage, this is one of the best spots for gold panning. However, you’ll also find plenty of other things to do in Arrowtown.

Whether you’re a keen hiker or you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, this picturesque town has something for everyone.

The Best Things to Do in Arrowtown

In Arrowtown, there’s a unique adventure awaiting you at every corner. You can head to the town’s iconic sweet shop, hike the Tobins Track, or visit one of the local wineries – and that’s just scratching the surface.

So, let’s take a look at the best things to do in Arrowtown…

When you book through our links, you’ll often get a discount and we may earn a commission. Your support also allows us to run our Facebook communities and create helpful content at no cost to you. Thank you!

1. Explore the Historic Buildings that Line Buckingham Street

The first thing you’ll want to do is head down to Buckingham Street – Arrowtown’s main heritage area. It is absolutely stunning, lined with historical buildings on both sides and a scenic mountain backdrop behind.

As you wander down the street you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Marvel at these unique buildings and the miner’s cottages that date back to the 1870s.

Not only is the architecture incredible, but you’ll also find a variety of shops, galleries, and restaurants along Buckingham Street.

All of the businesses found here are unique too – you won’t find any big chain stores in this scenic town.

People crossing the road and walking on the side walks with autumn leaves above them in Miner's Cottage.

2. Visit the Lakes District Museum & Art Gallery

Visiting the Lakes District Museum & Art Gallery is one of the best things to do in Arrowtown. The museum has been around since 1985 and is one of the country’s leading small museums. Plus, it’s cheap as chips to enter.

The museum is home to a variety of fantastic exhibits that depict early Māori and pioneer life in the area. As you’d imagine, the Lakes District Museum is a great place to learn about Arrowtown’s gold mining days.

There’s also an art gallery that displays a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, so make sure you head there too.

In a town which such a rich history, don’t miss this spot off your itinerary.

3. Head to the Chinese Settlement within Arrowtown

If you want to learn about Arrowtown’s history then you’ll also want to visit the Chinese Settlement.

During the gold rush era, the town was home to both European and Chinese communities. Whilst the Europeans got to live in the picturesque Buckingham Street, Chinese miners were forced to live in tiny huts on the outskirts of Arrowtown.

There was a huge difference in living conditions between the two communities, and once you visit the settlement you’ll totally understand what we mean.

Today, some of these huts have been restored so you can see what it would have been like to live here.

The Chinese Settlement is free to visit and is found along Bush Creek.

4. Pan for Gold in the Arrow River

You can’t visit Arrowtown without having a go at gold panning on the Arrow River.

The river is just a minute’s walk from the main town centre, and there are plenty of nearby places where you can hire gold pans. They’re rented out at surprisingly affordable rates, like at the Lakes District Museum , where you can borrow a pan without a time limit for just $5.

However, if you’re looking for lessons first then we’d recommend checking out Arrowtown Curios .

They offer a tutorial before you head off to the river, where they’ll teach you the most effective ways to pan for gold. They’ll also point you to the best spots, and give you a vial so you can keep any gold you find.

Gold panning is a family-friendly activity that the kids are sure to love.

Pro Tip: The sun in New Zealand is particularly harsh, so be sure to have a sunhat and plenty of sunscreen if you’re panning for gold on a summer’s day. Learn more about what to expect from New Zealand’s weather before packing for your trip .

5. Wander Along the Arrowtown River Trail

If you’re looking to take a stroll in the area, then head down to the Arrowtown River Trail.

Starting at Butlers Green, this trail takes you on a 4.2 km (2.6 mile) loop along the Arrow River. It’s a relatively easy walk, but the trail can get slippery (especially after lots of rainfall) so mind your footing.

Along the way, you’ll pass a scenic waterfall and stroll through lush woodland making this a real hit with all ages.

You’ll need to allow yourself around an hour to complete the trail. This includes plenty of time to admire the scenery along the way.

This is just one of many lovely walks in Arrowtown .

Pro Tip: If you’re travelling as a family and have the kids’ bikes in the car, you might like to pull them out for this trail.

6. Enjoy a Self-Guided Bike Tour

If you’re a fan of cycling, then we’ve got the perfect activity for you! We recommend hopping on a self-guided bike tour to explore Arrowtown, Gibbston Valley, Lake Hayes and the surrounding area.

The team will give you a safety briefing, before letting you loose on their state-of-the-art bikes. Choose from a premium e-bike or a Hardtail cruiser.

You’ll also be given a map with the routes you’ll need, with options for every fitness level too. Then you’ll be free to explore at your own pace.

Swing past a vineyard, ride over a swingbridge or just soak up the beautiful scenery – the choice is yours.

7. Visit the Remarkable Sweet Shop

This is an unmissable Arrowtown spot for those of us with a sweet tooth.

The Remarkable Sweet Shop is found along the iconic Buckingham Street, set in a unique heritage building.

It’s home to the largest sweet selection in New Zealand (which is quite an impressive feat), plus they even offer free fudge and nougat tastings!

As you wander through the store, you’ll have endless goodies to choose from including hard-boiled sweets, tasty gummies, delicious chocolates, and of course, a wide variety of fudge.

Whether you buy some treats to nibble on, take them home as gifts for friends and family, or just try the samples, visiting this iconic shop is one of the best things to do in Arrowtown. Don’t miss out!

8. Hike Some of the Fantastic Trails that Start in Town (Tobins Track & Sawpit Gully Track)

If you’re a keen hiker (or tramper, as we like to say in New Zealand), you’ll enjoy the trails within the surrounding area.

Both Tobins Track and the Sawpit Gully Track start from town, and as they’re relatively short, you’ll have plenty of time left in the day to enjoy everything else there is to do in Arrowtown.

Tobins Track is the shorter option with a distance of 4.5 km (2.8 miles). You’ll need to allow around an hour for this trail.

The Sawpit Gully Track is the more challenging hike, covering 7.9 km (4.9 miles) in a loop. It takes between 2 and 3 hours.

No matter which one you choose, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views!

A panoramic view of Arrowtown showing the fields, mountains, rising sun, feathery skies, and the town.

9. Spend an Evening at a Boutique Cinema

After a day full of exploring, you might be looking for somewhere to relax as a family or for a romantic evening. For this, we’d recommend visiting the Dorothy Browns Boutique Cinema .

With a licensed bar, a cosy fireplace, and comfortable seats, this is one of the best spots to watch a movie in New Zealand.

As well as new releases, Dorothy Browns also shows independent films so there are plenty of choices. There’s also an intermission break, so you can pop out for more snacks! Perhaps a glass of wine or a tasty cheese board?

Though a movie isn’t necessarily top of your travel wish list, we recommend you check out this theatre.

18 Buckingham Street, Arrowtown 9302

Pro Tip: You’ll find another one of our favourite little movie theatres in Wānaka . Like Dorothy Browns, Cinema Paradiso still have an old-school intermission there, where you can enjoy freshly baked cookies and delicious gelato, plus you’ll sit on comfy sofas!

Guests hanging out with beverages on their table in Dorothy Browns.

10. Play Golf at Some of the Most Beautiful Courses on the South Island

With three great golf courses in the area, Arrowtown is the perfect place to visit if you’re keen to hit the fairway.

You’ll have the choice of Arrowtown Golf Club , The Millbrook , or the Hills Golf Club – each offering something special.

Arrowtown Golf Club is the oldest course of these courses, having been established in 1937. It offers dramatic scenery and challenging fairways.

Millbrook is another world-class course, that’s famous for its picturesque scenery and variety of holes.

Last but not least is Hills Golf Club. This is where the New Zealand Open is held, so you know it’ll be in top-notch condition.

11. Visit One of the Local Wineries

New Zealand is famous for its delicious wines, many of which are grown in and around Arrowtown.

One of the most popular spots for wine tasting is The Winery , which you’ll find in the town centre. It offers the largest range of New Zealand wines in the world, so is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for a huge selection. Impressively, there are between 60-80 wines in total at the Winery!

Other popular wineries in the area include Wet Jacket Winery , Amisfield Winery , and Chard Farm Winery .

With so many great options, be sure to allow some time in your schedule for a wine-tasting experience.

12. Drive the Crown Range Road

The Crown Range Road is the highest main road in the country and is found off State Highway 6. Driving it is the best way to travel between Queenstown and Wānaka , though it actually starts from Arrow Junction. This is just 5.3 km (3.3 miles) from Arrowtown.

The Crown Range Road reaches an altitude of 1,121m (3,678 feet) so it’s not an easy drive, and you’ll need to be especially careful during the winter months.

However, if you decide this route is for you make sure you take your time as the views are breathtaking!

We recommend heading up and over the Crown Range as you head to Cardrona for skiing/snowboarding or a visit to their famous pub, or for a getaway to Wānaka.

A trail leading from the mountain ranges and going to the lake of Crown Range Road.

As you can see there are a number of awesome things to do in Arrowtown!

Whether you’re looking to hit one of the hiking trails, pan for gold, or relax at a local winery, there’s something for everyone!

Have you ever visited Arrowtown?

If you have, where’s your favourite place to visit? We’d love to know!

Arrowtown — attractions & places to visit

Undeniably Arrowtown is a tourist attraction, yet it manages to retain a charm making it one of the destinations New Zealanders and other visitors should visit. This small quaint town with its visible heritage, boutique shops, cafes aplenty and delicious temptations, think retail therapy here, is captivating. The Maori name for the Arrow river is Haihainui which means ‘Big Scratches. Courtesy of the Lakes District Museum and Art Gallery.

Arrowtown is a postcard tourist town neatly wrapped as a preserved nineteenth gold mining settlement.  The town has a glorious main street characterised by cheerful timber facades.  The adjacent Arrow river flows through the dappled light of deciduous trees and coupled with a layer of polished urban hospitality visitors flock in their thousands to soak in the atmosphere.  Arrowtown is definitely quaint and despite the crowds of tourists is definitely worth time spent exploring.  The town is not a replica gold mining town but the real deal.  Effectively you are visiting an open air museum, complete with contemporary cultural attractions such as art galleries, gift shops and souvenirs. And the landscape is luscious framing the place all year round making for instagram moments around every corner

Best time to visit

Year round Arrowtown is attractive. A favourite is autumn, the splendour of foliage, bursts of orange, gold and amber compliment the nineteenth century vibe.  It is cuteness overload on the senses.

Arrowtown Weather Forecast

Walking in the small compact town is the best way to explore the town. As a very popular visitor destination traffic congestion makes parking problematic. Check  Parking  Queenstown local government parking zones for the district.

Arrowtown in autumn has earned its reputation

  • Post author: jonasadmin

You can take the basic bitch out of the East Coast, but she’ll still love everything pumpkin spice. It’s starting to feel like my favorite season here in New Zealand. The nights are crisp, and the days are shorter. Leaves are just starting to change colors, heralding the arrival of autumn.

I know, I know. I’m going rogue here and saying “autumn” instead of “fall.” I’ve been in New Zealand for so long now that I’ve slipped into local Kiwi terminology without even realizing it. Bins. Rubbish. Capsicum. Coriander. Smoko. Togs. Wop wops. I can go on forever. I even pronounce words that are the same with a Kiwi accent, like garage (gare-edge) or Nikon (nick-on). Oh well.

Well, I might be mostly Kiwi-fied by now, including calling fall autumn, but I haven’t lost my eternal love for my favorite season. Even though it’s in April here. Except this year, autumn is a bit early, with the leaves starting to change at the end of March. And while I’m sad that summer is ending, bring on all the autumn colors.

Arrowtown in autumn

Normally, the best time to leaf-peep around the South Island in New Zealand is mid-April. After a decade of living down here, they usually hit their peak colors. Colors—no “u.” Still American.

Arrowtown tops the list when it comes to towns that get the most attention for their autumn foliage. Any time of the year, Arrowtown is pretty spectacular. Twenty minutes out of Queenstown on the way to Wānaka, it’s an easy-to-access spot for those hitting the highlights on a New Zealand vacation.

20 photos of autumn in New Zealand that will delight you

Nestled against a steep hillside up into the mountains, Arrowtown is beautiful. Though I wouldn’t want to live here. In wintertime, the surrounding mountains keep the town in the shade almost all day long. Shivers. New Zealand is only just learning how to build warm houses. And after living in the mountains this long, I learned pretty quickly that having sunlight directly hit a house in winter can make all the difference.

Arrowtown in autumn

Tangent aside, that sun-blocking hill happens to be covered in deciduous trees that change color in the autumn, turning the mountain into a literal wall of golds and reds. It’s gorgeous.

Considering New Zealand doesn’t have really any native trees that drop their leaves in the autumn, it’s pretty beautiful. Long story short, Central Otago was known for its gold mining and farming. After burning down most of the native forest to graze livestock, farmers planted trees from back home in Europe for shade, etc. These are the trees we see today. Along with others that are really problematic and spreading like crazy, like wilding pines – the archenemy of conservationists.

While imported plants in our fragile environment generally make me see red, I forget all my morals for a month of the year. Show me all the pretty leaves!

Arrowtown in autumn

Arrowtown is so well-known for its autumn colors that it hosts an autumn festival every April.

Every year, on a perfect autumn day, I head over the hill to Arrowtown. I hike in the mountains behind the town and sit outside one of my favorite cafes, usually with a book. I stroll along the crystal blue river that winds its way alongside the town and peep into the local shops. Arrowtown in autumn is ridiculously picturesque.

Nothing beats Central Otago in autumn

Without fail, I always go alone. It is very much a self-care day in one of my favorite landscapes; I like being anonymous in a sea of tourists. It gives me a chance to people-watch, slow down, and revel in others’ enjoyment of the beautiful colors too. It’s not just me.

Arrowtown in autumn

As the leaves on the small trees on my street begin to turn red, as I dig out my warmer clothes from storage, I can’t help but reflect on the changing seasons. For me, autumn was always about new beginnings, the start of a new school year. It’s a chance for us to shrug off the past and to jump into something new.

Autumn, for me, means I can fully embrace my introverted side, snuggle up at home, and be cozy while daydreaming about the future. I think about when I’ll again head over to experience Arrowtown in autumn. What’s next?

“He found himself wondering at times, especially in the autumn, about the wild lands, and strange visions of mountains that he had never seen came into his dreams.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Hamas releases video of 2 hostages as Blinken set to travel to region

Hamas on Saturday released a video of two hostages it is holding in Gaza, including one who is a dual U.S. citizen, as the group said it was reviewing a new Israeli proposal to halt the fighting and bring some of the captives home.

The video, which lasts just over three minutes, shows U.S.-born Keith Siegel, 64, and Omri Miran, 47, from a kibbutz near the Gaza Strip border. The families of the two men confirmed their identities in a statement released by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a volunteer advocacy group.

“The proof of life from Keith Siegel and Omri Miran is the clearest evidence that the Israeli government must do everything to approve a deal for the return of all the hostages before Independence Day,” which is on May 14, the statement said.

The men were kidnapped by Hamas-led militants on Oct. 7, when the group and allied fighters stormed southern Israel and rampaged through local communities, killing around 1,200. More than 250 others were abducted that day, and over 100 were released during a temporary truce in November. Israel says 133 hostages are still in Gaza, 36 of whom are confirmed dead.

The video on Saturday, which was posted on Hamas-affiliated social media channels, is undated. But the pair make references to the Jewish holiday of Passover, which ends on Tuesday, and to being held captive for more than 200 days, suggesting the footage is recent.

Omri’s father, Dani Miran, told Israel’s Channel 12 news that he was “in tears” the second he saw his son in the video, which was the first evidence he’s seen indicating that Omri, a husband and father of two, is still alive.

The clips of Miran and Siegel were screened Saturday evening at a rally in Tel Aviv in support of the hostages. “The video shook me and all the people of Israel,” Dani Miran said in an address to the crowd.

He called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to approve a cease-fire deal with Hamas that would secure the hostages’ release. “Take one small and bloodless step for both peoples,” he said. “All the people of Israel and the nations of the world want to see an end to the bloodshed.”

In a recorded video statement, Keith Siegel’s wife, Aviva, addressed her husband, saying: “Keith, I love you, we will fight until you return.” Aviva Siegel was also kidnapped on Oct. 7 and was held for 51 days before her release.

The images of Miran and Siegel came just days after similar footage was released by Hamas showing U.S.-Israeli citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin. Together, the videos renewed pressure on the Israeli government to negotiate a deal. For months, the talks have largely been stalled, with Israel seeking only a temporary truce and Hamas insisting any pause in the fighting be linked to a more permanent cease-fire.

Israel wants the hostages released and Hamas eliminated in Gaza. For its part, Hamas hopes Israel will agree to withdraw its troops and release some Palestinian prisoners.

On Saturday, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said the government could suspend a planned military operation in Rafah in southern Gaza if a deal is reached. Katz, who made the comments in an interview with Israel’s Channel 12, is not part of Israel’s five-man war cabinet, which makes decisions on the country’s military operations.

Here’s what else to know

Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel Monday to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where he will meet with Palestinian, Egyptian and Qatari leaders to discuss cease-fire efforts and humanitarian assistance in Gaza, the State Department said.

An internal investigation into 12 U.N. relief workers in Gaza who Israel alleged were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack has cleared one person , “as no evidence was provided by Israel to support the allegations,” said Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for U.N. Secretary General António Guterres. Investigations into an additional three cases have been suspended because of insufficient evidence provided by Israel, he said, and eight cases remain under investigation by the U.N. Office of Internal Oversight Services.

Activists who organized an aid flotilla to Gaza said Saturday that their mission was canceled, after authorities from Guinea-Bissau withdrew their country’s flag from two of the three ships. The flotilla was scheduled to depart from a port near Istanbul on Friday after multiple delays. On Thursday, the Guinea-Bissau International Ships Registry requested a last-minute inspection, activists said in a statement, calling the decision to remove the flags “blatantly political.”

At least 34,388 people have been killed and 77,437 injured in Gaza since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry , which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but says the majority of the dead are women and children. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, including more than 300 soldiers, and says 261 soldiers have been killed since its military operation in Gaza began.

Alon Rom, Claire Parker and Susannah George contributed to this report.

Israel-Gaza war

The Israel-Gaza war has gone on for six months, and tensions have spilled into the surrounding region .

The war: On Oct. 7, Hamas militants launched an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel that included the taking of civilian hostages at a music festival . (See photos and videos of how the deadly assault unfolded ). Israel declared war on Hamas in response, launching a ground invasion that fueled the biggest displacement in the region since Israel’s creation in 1948 .

Gaza crisis: In the Gaza Strip, Israel has waged one of this century’s most destructive wars , killing tens of thousands and plunging at least half of the population into “ famine-like conditions. ” For months, Israel has resisted pressure from Western allies to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave .

U.S. involvement: Despite tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some U.S. politicians , including President Biden, the United States supports Israel with weapons , funds aid packages , and has vetoed or abstained from the United Nations’ cease-fire resolutions.

‘My example can change minds’: Roma fighting for place in postwar Ukraine

Campaigners across Europe call on Kyiv to recognise contribution of marginalised community

  • Ukraine war – live updates

G rowing up in Ukraine , Arsen Mednik often found himself singled out – at school children would point at him, calling him “gypsy”, while employers were often reluctant to hire him when they learned he was Roma.

But in early 2022, as Russian forces began their savage occupation of his home town of Bucha, Mednik was among the first Ukrainian Roma to volunteer in the defence of the country.

“My only thought was that I wanted to defend people,” he said. “The Russians weren’t paying attention to who was Roma or Ukrainian. They just killed everyone.”

The 34-year-old is among the many Roma people on the frontlines of the war on Ukraine, risking their lives despite their own personal experiences of marginalisation and wider concerns over whether they will have a place in the country when the war ends.

Destroyed buildings in Bucha, Ukraine.

Exact figures of how many from the community are fighting are hard to come by, but it is estimated that there are a few thousand, said Stephan Müller, an adviser on international affairs with the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma.

The actual number among the country’s estimated 400,000 Roma could be even higher – a recent survey of 143 Roma in Ukraine by the Roma Foundation for Europe found that a quarter of respondents had relatives on the frontlines. Of these, a third were volunteers.

It’s a remarkable contribution given that Roma, whose roots in Ukraine trace back centuries, rank among the country’s most discriminated against , complicating their access to decent housing, jobs, healthcare and schooling.

In the years before Russia’s full-scale invasion, Roma were targeted regularly by far-right groups, resulting in the deaths of at least two people and leading Amnesty International to warn in 2019 that “attacks against Roma are becoming increasingly vicious in Ukraine” and urge that perpetrators be brought to justice.

“There is strong antigypsyism in Ukraine, we shouldn’t deny that,” said Müller. “But despite all of this racism, Roma are standing on the side of Ukraine and fighting.”

Müller is among the campaigners across Europe who are calling on Ukraine to recognise the contributions of Roma and do more to secure their place in the country once the war ends. Their efforts are guided by recent history, in which Roma were often expelled or excluded from reconstruction efforts following periods of war.

Two men in military uniforms

“So in Kosovo, for example, more than 100,000 – almost two-thirds of the Roma population – were expelled primarily after the war,” said Müller. Some were targeted by violence, forcing them to flee, while others ended up displaced after unequal treatment by authorities.

In Ukraine, Roma who are not on the frontlines have sought to contribute in other ways, said Müller, citing fundraising efforts to purchase army equipment, Roma artists who are holding concerts for the army and Roma-led NGOs who are serving up free meals to non-Roma who are in need.

“This has to be made public,” he said. “And has to be acknowledged, recognised and properly rewarded in a postwar period. Rather than wreak havoc and violence against Roma or expel them.”

The efforts to highlight Roma contributions to the war efforts have come up against the stereotype-heavy coverage of the community by many in mainstream media, said Nataliia Tomenko of ARCA, an agency that supports Roma youth and works to preserve Roma history and culture in Ukraine.

“In general, when they talk about communities in Ukraine, it’s not on the level it should be,” she said. “There is no positive representation.” Her organisation has sought to combat this by spotlighting the stories of several Roma soldiers on its website.

The government in Ukraine has also made some efforts to this end, recognising the contribution of minorities, including Roma, to the country’s defence in state programmes and bestowing an award for bravery to Viktor Ilchak, a Roma soldier from western Ukraine, last year.

after newsletter promotion

Campaigners have warned that Ukraine’s national recovery plan fails to meaningfully address many of the distinct issues faced by Roma, such as those who live in informal housing without ownership documents, potentially complicating access to compensation or financial assistance for rebuilding, to those who lack the documents needed to prove their citizenship or residence status.

Postwar plans also need to take into account the disproportionate effect that the war has had on many in the Roma community, said Anzhelika Bielova, the founder of Voice of Romni, an organisation working to empower Roma women in Ukraine.

“The vulnerability of already-vulnerable groups was amplified,” said Bielova, whose organisation has shifted to providing humanitarian aid since the war began.

“The majority of Ukrainians have better access to services and information than the Roma community, which is in a vulnerable situation,” she said, citing the lack of internet access and information on available resources that affect many in the community.

The invasion came on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic, both of which forced many schools in the country to shift classes online. Grappling with a lack of technology such as laptops and smartphones, many Roma children were locked out of learning, giving rise to a void that could seriously affect their future but also their postwar role in the country.

Few organisations – whether in Ukraine or outside – have addressed these issues, she said. “In parts of Roma settlements in western Ukraine, people are living in awful conditions, without gas, without heat and without access to water,” she added. “And they’re invisible to humanitarian actors.”

After spending the first days of the war digging trenches in and around Kyiv, Mednik eventually joined the army.

Standing shoulder to shoulder with others in Ukraine, he saw much of the discrimination he had wrestled with his whole life melt away. “People who get to know me, they have a good opinion about Roma,” he said. “I realised that my example can change people’s minds.”

In September, as he crouched in a trench near Kherson, he was hit by an unidentified object, leaving him in a coma for 20 days. When he woke up, he learned he had encephalitis, shrapnel in his lungs and had lost several of his fingers as well as much of his hearing.

After three months of rehabilitation, Mednik returned to the army, helping to coordinate air defence operations. “I have to show a good example for Ukrainians, to show that Roma can fight, not only for themselves but also for other Ukrainians,” he said.

What kept him going, even as exhaustion sets in for many across Ukraine, was his deep desire to defend people. “I’m proud to be Roma. We’re an ancient people, with a history and a culture to match. We’re not military people, we’re a people of peace,” he said. “But in this case, when someone comes to kill me, my family, my friends, I decided to fight. I’m proud to defend people and proud to be Roma.”

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.
