Epirus (Parga)

Do you want to experience the bliss of an island paradise without having to leave the mainland of Greece ? Then Parga is the place for you. This cozy nook of Greece offers the peace and scenery of an island getaway for the whole family, with plenty of things to see and do.

Perhaps you already explored and loved some of the things to do in Kefalonia and are now ready to move on to the next Greek adventure. So what’s stopping you? Let’s get straight to it.

Where Is Parga Town?

Parga Town is a seaside town located in northwestern Greece in the Epirus region. It’s 270 miles from Athens, and the closest airport is Corfu, which receives domestic flights from Athens and Thessaloniki.

Is Parga Worth Visiting?

The short answer is yes. It’s a mainland town, but it has the feel of an island paradise, making it a favorite amongst holidaymakers. It’s famous for its incredible beaches, stunning traditional architecture, and natural landscape.

Parga Travel Guide - father and daughter at the Parga Castle lookout, view of the Parga Harbour

The foliage-covered rocks that jut from the Ionian Sea give it a tropical vibe, and the colorful houses nestled up against the mountain are idyllic. There are even the enigmatic ruins of the Venetian Castle to enjoy. Basically, there’s something for everyone in Parga.

What To Do In Parga Town

There’s always a multitude of things to choose from when going on vacation, but here are our five favorite things to do in Parga.

1. Venetian Castle Of Parga Town

The Venetian Castle has a long history of defense in Parga, as the eight towers built around the castle attest to. It was originally built in the 11th century by the residents of the town, and it was rebuilt and fortified three times over the centuries by the Venetians.

Parga Travel Guide - Venetian Castle of Parga - man standing in front of the ruins of the Parga Castle

There’s plenty to see in the ruins, from arched alleys, warehouses, forts, bastions, and hidden passages — the kids have the time of their lives exploring. Inside the castle, you’ll find two main buildings where exhibitions and theatrical performances are hosted. There’s even a café selling frappés and waffles, so no need to bring packed lunches.

The castle is easy to reach from the Port of Parga — simply walk up the narrow allies until you reach the top. Be prepared for complaining calves if you aren’t as fit as you thought.

2. Explore The Gorgeous Lanes And Alleys

No dingey dumpster-filled alleys here. In Parga, the town is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways — too narrow for even a bicycle, sometimes. Or they may have too many stairs, seeing as the buildings climb up a mountain slope.

Parga Travel Guide - strolling around the alleys in the old town

But if you explore these charming allies, you’ll discover to your delight small shops, quaint cafés, and traditional restaurants with plenty of local colors. Every here and there, a small square opens up with a handful of tables and maybe a church.

There’s no doubt every new alleyway that you happen upon in this honeycomb has something new to offer.

3. Enjoy Some Time On The Beach

Beaches are perfect for family vacations — the kids get to have fun while the adults can relax a little and catch some sun. Valtos Beach is one of the longest sandy stretches in Parga, it’s popular with swimmers and surfers alike.

Parga Travel Guide - Krioneri Beach in Parga, sunbeds and parasols at the beach

It’s on the other side of the hill that’s covered with colorful houses and topped by the Venetian Castle. But, it only takes about ten minutes to climb up and down the stairs to reach it. It’s pretty cosmopolitan, with restaurants lining the shorefront and sunbeds scattered about for your convenience.

Krioneri Beach sits at the foot of the mountain, and it literally means “the cold one,” so be prepared for a refreshingly cool dip.

The mellow lapping of the Ionian Sea next to the loungers and umbrellas that line the sand make an inviting scene, especially as they overlook a pretty little island just offshore. It can get crowded though, so make your way there early.

4. Hop On The Tourist Sightseeing Train

Kids are enchanted by trains, plus who doesn’t want to take a break from walking? The Parga Train offers three different destinations. The first is Ali Pasha Castle, also called the Castle of Anthoussa.

Parga Travel Guide - Sightseeing Tourist Train in Parga Town - by the beach

Built in 1814 as a fort, it overlooks the sea on three sides and the town of Parga on the fourth. It’s charming in a crumbly fashion and a delightful choice for a family visit.

The second train tour takes you to the Waterfall and Watermill Folk Museum and Café. It’s a traditional stone mill in the untouched countryside with old olive and fig trees surrounding the little stream that powers the mill.

The last train tour is of Parga itself and is the shortest of all three. But it’s a pleasant way to see the city in a fun and unique way.

Top Tip : Book the train tours here .

5. Stroll Around The Harbor Area

What could be more family-friendly than this? Kids love seeing the fishing boats coming in and out, and we love the bars and restaurants lined up along the promenade. It’s a win-win. But this harbor is special; the buildings are all shades of fun, vibrant colors, climbing up into the hillsides in an Italian-esque style.

At night, the area comes alive with twinkling lights and live music, and the sunsets are perfect.

Tours To Book From Parga

Vacations can get a little chaotic, so why not remove some of the stress from your vacation by booking a tour or two? They usually have transport sorted, plus they’re highly entertaining for the whole family. Here are a few of our favorites we hand-picked for you.

Meteora From Parga

Who wouldn’t be astounded at the six monasteries impossibly built atop rock pillars? It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site to boot. Don’t get stressed about organizing it — rather let a tour company do the work for you so you can relax and enjoy this marvel of architecture.

Best Restaurants In Parga

There were so many incredible places to eat in Parga, it made us dizzy trying to pick our favorite each night! Most specialized in traditional Greek food, naturally, but some had a more modern fare to offer, and others had rustic plates with scrumptious tastes.

Parga Travel Guide - best restaurants in Parga, Ponte restaurant in Parga Harbour, view of the Parga Castle

Others just had the atmosphere down to perfection, while some were more kid-friendly. Here are the ones that you just can’t miss when visiting Parga:

This spot has some Italian classic meals mixed with salads and high-end main courses. The food presentation is astounding, the decor and atmosphere sublime, and the cocktails are delicious.

Homey and vibrantly Greek with its blue and white decor and rustic tables, the traditional Greek food is served simply and in hearty portions, so come with an appetite!

This place serves both traditional and vegetarian Greek options and offers high chairs and a kid’s menu for the little ones as it’s very family-friendly. The portions are huge, so you get your money’s worth.

Taverna Petros

It has a hip and modern look in contrast to its authentic traditional Greek menu. Pops of green and warm browns together with its open-plan layout makes it a very inviting space — as does the delicious smell of their rustic food.

They offer chic, warm decor and equally chic plating of their exquisite modern Greek cuisine. It’s a cozy, family-run restaurant tucked away from the crowds, and you definitely need to try it before you leave Parga.

Where To Stay In Parga

There are plenty of places to take your pick from, but our favorite spots were these three properties.

Hotel Maistrali

This colorful and eclectic hotel is full of whimsical and eye-catching decor, plus a garden to make nature lovers drool. The café bar is open all day, and breakfast is made from fresh local ingredients you and your family will love. It’s only 160 ft from the beach and 320 ft from the port with delightful seafront taverns.

Krioneri Beach

With romantic sea views from the balcony and warm interior tones, this apartment welcomes you in a comfy embrace. It’s only steps away from the beach, which the kids (and you) will love. Each unit has a kitchenette for easy meals and snacks, and free Wi-Fi for your convenience.

Visiting Parga Greece? Here Are 15 Best Things to Experience

After long working days, the only thing you want to do is relax in your own space. However, sometimes it’s nice to get away from home (I always chose weekend tours, like a Pena Palace tour out of Lisbon when I lived in this vibrant city) and experience something new, relaxing in new “homes” you’re creating everywhere you go. My temporary home was Parga, Greece.

Table of Contents

I always write about how traveling can significantly rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. It can help you learn new things about the world whilst learning more about yourself.

When you’re in a different environment, you must adapt and determine how to make the most of your situation. This can be a great learning experience and can help you grow as a person.

Ionian sea and greek islands

One such destination that proved to be a turning point in how I enjoy my life was a small coastal location in Greece called Parga Town. When you think of Greece, you might think about Athens, the Greek Islands, or other mainland destinations.

However, I’m here to show you this lovely beach town through my eyes and words. It gave me more perspective on my long travels, and alongside journaling and self-care planning , it helped me experience a fulfilling, balanced break.

Parga is a beautiful seaside town in western Greece that is teeming with lush greenery, olive groves, stunning hotels, and picturesque restaurants.

Is Parga Greece worth visiting?

parga travel guide

Even though Parga is not the most popular holiday destination in Greece, it is still worth a visit. People often extend their stays here (like I did) because of the calm and serene vibe.

Parga is also home to some amazing beaches where you can soak up the sun and enjoy crystal-clear waters. With so much to see and do, Parga is definitely a place worth visiting.

Not many advertisements or blogs highlight this town; thus, you might think it is not worth visiting. However, you might change this perspective after reading some of my experiences below.

Which airport do you fly to for Parga Greece?

There are a few airports you can fly into, depending on your location. If you’re coming from the United States, you can fly to Athens or Thessaloniki.

If you’re coming from the United Kingdom, you can fly through the Aktion national airport in Preveza. The closest airport to Parga is the Aktion national airport, and it will be pretty feasible for you.

No matter where you’re coming from, an airport will work for you as the location is accessible.

Is Parga Greece expensive?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as it will depend on your own personal spending habits. However, I would say that Parga is not as expensive as some of the other tourist destinations in Greece.

There is a range of accommodation options available in Parga, from camping to luxurious hotels. You can also find a variety of restaurants catering to different budgets. So, whether you’re on a tight budget or you’re looking to splash out, you’ll be able to find something suitable in Parga.

Overall, after going through my experiences below, you would find that it wasn’t as expensive for me as some of the other destinations I’ve been to .

Is Parga town lively?

parga

Parga town is not as lively as some of the other tourist destinations in Greece. However, there are still plenty of things to do and see in the town.

Parga is not a party destination; it is where I came to have a break from that sort of thing. However, the town still through a lot of surprises at me.

The friendly people do have adventurous natures, and the nights can get pretty crazy. The nature exploration, the food scene, and the people make it a positive and rejuvenating experience.

The 15 best things to do in Parga, Greece:

Visit parga old town and its colorful winding streets.

Parga old town

The old town of Parga is a must-see for anyone visiting the town. It’s home to meandering streets and colorful buildings that are sure to enchant visitors.

The old town is on a hill overlooking many hotels, a sandy beach, and exotic waters, so there are plenty of great spots to take in the stunning views. If you’re looking for a charming and picturesque place to explore, visit the old town of Parga.

Try a local dish with a sea view at the town port

parga bay

The town port in Parga is the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious local dish with a stunning sea view. The port is situated on a hillside, so you can take in the Ionian Sea’s stunning views while eating.

Countless restaurants are serving up both local and international cuisines in Greece. However, seafood is my personal favorite, as it can’t get fresher than it was in Parga.

Even if you are a first-timer to seafood or dislike the idea of eating it, you should give the Calamari and fried Cod a shot in this hill town. There are also plenty of cafes and bakeries where you can enjoy a sweet treat or refreshing cup of coffee.

Enjoy the natural beauty of the lush greenery scenery

air tours parga

There are plenty of trails and nature walks that allow visitors to explore the natural beauty of Parga.

I took one of these trails near my hotel, leading me to spectacular views around the town.

I later found out that there are a couple of these trails, so make sure to ask the locals for these trails.

Visit ali pasha castle

Ali pasha castle is a popular tourist destination in Parga but to know more about the place, I recommend buying a guided tour or going with a local.

My experience was much more fruitful because I had a local with me to explain some of the site’s significance.

Try scuba diving at the bottom of the Ionian sea

parga greece scuba diving

The exotic waters of the sea in Parga are clear and teeming with marine life, so it’s an excellent opportunity to see the underwater world.

There are several diving schools in Parga, so you can find one that suits your needs and experience level.

There are a lot of spots for first-timers at the Ionian islands to dive off from.

Don’t miss the Venetian castle

The Venetian castle in Parga is a beautiful and imposing structure that’s well worth a visit.

The Venetians built the Venetian castle in Parga in the 15th century as part of their defensive system against the Ottomans. The castle is perched on a hill overlooking the town and the sea. It is one of Parga’s most photographed landmarks.

The castle’s interior is home to several interesting exhibits that tell the story of Parga’s history. As a keen admirer of traditional architecture and history, I was thoroughly surprised by this visit.

Experience the orthodox religion at the virgin mary chapel

The chapel is located in the old town of Parga, and it’s home to an interesting exhibition about the history of the orthodox religion.

It gave me a new perspective on how people view religion in this part of the world.

The chapel is also a popular spot for weddings, so if you’re lucky, you might witness a beautiful ceremony while you’re there.

Try hiking at the springs of the Acheron river

air tours parga

This activity is perhaps the most interesting for nature lovers. The hike is easy to moderate, and it’s well worth seeing the stunning natural landscape.

The hike will take you through a lush green forest, and you’ll get to see the river’s clear waters up close. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, as it can be a long hike.

This is the best-guided jeep tour you can find online. They can pick you up from Parga, Ioannina, or Preveza.

Visit Parga’s wonderful beaches

parga main beach

Parga is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Greece. From rocky coves to long stretches of sand, you just wish you could swim forever in these turquoise waters.

My personal favorite is Valtos Beach. It’s a bit of a hike to get to Valtos beach, but it’s well worth it.

High cliffs surround Valtos beach, so you feel like you have the whole beach to yourself. Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreens, as there’s no shade on this beach.

The Piso Krioneri beach is also a close second for me in this region.

Visit Parga by night and have dinner at one of the many traditional taverns

parga village

I also enjoyed dining at a traditional tavern in Parga during my stay. The tavern was situated in a quiet corner of the old town, and it was full of locals and tourists alike.

I sampled various dishes, all of which were made with fresh local ingredients. The wine was also excellent, and it went perfectly with the food.

It’s not for everyone, but I hope everyone does it once to experience the local culture.

Check the panoramic views of Parga town from one of the viewpoints

The entire town is very scenic, and the hilly landscape gives you a view from almost anywhere. Make sure to make a lot of memories by clicking iconic photographs here.

Take a neighboring tour to Meteora, the most stunning monastery in Greece

air tours parga

I highly recommend visiting Meteora. It’s one of the most stunning monasteries in Greece, and it’s well worth a visit.

The monastery is located on a rock formation over 600 meters high and is home to many beautiful churches.

If you’re a fan of traditional houses and architecture, you cannot miss this place, which is a short drive from Parga.

Locals or tour guides can show you all the hidden gems that most tourists don’t get to see in this monastery.

Here is the go-to daily tour I recommend for visiting Meteora from Parga.

Enjoy the turquoise waters of the beautiful beaches through various water sports

air tours parga

There are plenty of water sports to enjoy on Parga’s stunning beaches. I personally like kayaking and snorkeling.

The kayaks are located on various beaches (like Valtos beach, Piso Krioneri beach, or Lichnos beach), so getting started is effortless. Get comfortable with the equipment and explore the best parts of Parga.

Snorkeling is also excellent on these beaches. The water is crystal clear, and you can see all sorts of sea life while you’re swimming. The availability of snorkeling equipment for rent (on Krioneri and other beaches) is uncertain, as sometimes you have to bring your own gear.

I recommend (and tried) this kayaking tour —best choice if you want to explore the most secluded areas.

Choose one of the various boat trips to the secluded beaches

air tours parga

I have a particular spot for river cruises and boat trips, so whether in a city like Singapore or Paris, I always love this type of getaway. So imagine taking one of the boat trips to the secluded beaches around Parga, where the crowds are less. The boats usually leave from the port in Parga town, taking you to some of the area’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches.

The trip lasts around half a day, and you get to stop at three different beaches. The ocean views are all very picturesque, and you can swim, sunbathe, or snorkel if you like.

Rent a small boat to the neighboring islands of Syvota or Paxos

air tours parga

Renting a small boat to the neighboring islands of Syvota, Paxos or Corfu is also an option if you want to explore more of the stunning Ionian region.

Paxos is a fantastic small island within the Ionian islands group, together with Antipaxos, and Syvota is also similarly located.

Both islands are unique, and the villages are charming.

I personally prefer Paxos and Antipaxos for the picturesque little fish villages and the fantastic turquoise waters, so if you have to choose between Syvota and Paxos-Antipaxos, choose the latter.

Here’s an affordable full-day option for a tour that will take you to Paxos, Antipaxos and Blue Caves.

Takeaway – Why is Parga the perfect holiday destination?

Visiting Parga?

There are plenty of reasons why Parga is the perfect summer holiday destination. The beautiful beaches (Valtos beach and Krioneri beach are great examples), the stunning scenery (the Venetian castle provides a spectacular view), and the delicious food are all top reasons to explore this charming town.

Apart from all the different attractions, the slow rhythm of the locals’ way of life was very alluring to me as it gave me an enhanced perspective on the seaside lifestyle and how a mingle of Venetian and Greek cultures coexist so stunningly.

Ali Pasha’s Castle

Located a few kilometres above Parga, right outside the village of Anthoussa, Ali Pasha’s castle was built in 1814 with the aim of bombarding and then capturing Parga. Ali Pasha was then the governor of the Epirus region for the Ottoman Empire.

The view of the Ionian Sea from the castle is one of the most beautiful in the region, with a panorama of the islands of Paxi to the northwest and Lefkada to the southwest.

To get there, take the train of Parga which offers a 2-hour tour including a stop at Anthoussa. Alternatively, you can also hike to Ali Pasha’s Castle, it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes from Parga (around 5 kilometres).

In Anthoussa, stop at the Watermill Museum and walk to the beautiful waterfall.

Rent a boat

To discover the coast around Parga, go on a boat trip! There are many tours to the nearby beaches, I like how when on the sea you can appreciate the coastline from a different perspective. You can book your boat trip directly at the port or online right here.

What we like to do is to rent a small motorboat during one afternoon, so we are free to discover the coast at our own pace (also available directly at the port).

The best restaurants, tavernas and bars in Parga

Here is a selection of places I particularly enjoy in Parga:

Med Parga : very nice place to have a drink or dinner at the end of the day, the view over the sea and the sunset is fantastic.

Sakis : ideal to discover traditional Greek dishes! The menu is pretty extensive.

Gyros bank : the best souvlaki & gyros in Parga!

Bacchos Restaurant : a great place for a meal by the sea.

Atrium Bar : a bar overlooking the bay of Piso Krioneri, very pleasant at the end of the day.

Veranda Cocktail Bar : a trendy place to enjoy excellent cocktails in the evening.

Avocado Cocktail Bar : rooftop with a beautiful view over the whole town.

Day trips ideas from Parga

Located only 27 kilometres away from Parga, this pretty resort is famous for its intense blue sea and small islands with emerald green vegetation. Don’t miss the Blue Lagoon and the Bella Vraka beach on the island of Megalo Mourtemeno! The latter can be reached on foot via a shallow sandbank connecting it to the coastline. When in Sivota, rent a boat! It is the best way to discover all the beaches.

Sivota

The islands of Paxos and Antipaxos form the Paxi archipelago. It is a destination south of Corfu very popular for its crystal-clear sea and pretty fishing villages! How to get there: Parga Cruises organises day trips and takes you through the highlights of the archipelago.

When in Parga, you can also go on a day trip to the island of Corfu! The ferry leaves at 8.30 am and returns to Parga at 6.30 pm. The journey is quite long, about 2.5 hours each way. The port there is only a few minutes walk from the old town, but you can also take a taxi at the roundabout when going out of the port. There, you will have enough time to explore Corfu Town, wander through its pretty alleys and on the Liston, browse through its local, charming shops, discover the Old Fortress and maybe even swim at Faliraki, a beach in the heart of Corfu’s old town.

The Acheron

In Greek mythology, the Acheron is one of the rivers of the Underworld, and a branch of the underground river Styx. It is a place steeped in history, where you can enjoy swimming, walking (feet in the river), kayaking, horse riding… all in a magnificent natural setting. Don’t forget to bring a swimming suit and suitable shoes! The Acheron is 25 kilometres away from Parga and the best way to get there is by car. Alternatively, you can reach it with a boat called the “Lichnos Express”, which you will find in the port of Parga.

Dodoni Sanctuary and Theatre

If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Dodoni Sanctuary near the town of Ioannina. The journey takes just over an hour (75 kilometres) but is well worth the trip: there is an ancient site dedicated to the cult of Zeus that includes a superb theatre.

The island of Lefkada has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Ionian Sea! The good thing about it? The island is so close to the mainland that it is connected by a bridge, so you can get there by car. The north of the island is 85 kilometres away from Parga, a little less than an hour and a half drive. There are some beautiful beaches in the north of the island, but if you want to discover Porto Katsiki, Lefkada’s most famous beach, it’s an extra hour’s drive.

If you want to know more about this beautiful destination, have a look at this weekend trip to Lefkada !

Best time to visit Parga in Greece: what’s the weather like?

Parga is lovely between April (after the Orthodox Easter) and October. Outside this period, you will find most activities closed. The area is still a pleasant place to hike, with mild temperatures in winter. The months of June till September are hot, with temperatures exceeding 30°C. Choose this period if you plan to spend your days at the beach, otherwise earlier or later in the season if you don’t want to be bothered by the heat.

Parga is one of my favourite destinations on Greece’s west coast, we always make a stop there on our way to Corfu. I hope you’ll enjoy it too! Have a great holiday in Greece ☀️.

A Quick Guide to Parga, Greece

Thinking of booking a trip to Parga in Greece? Here’s what to expect from this picturesque beach resort on the north coast.

Where is it?

Parga is on the west coast of the Greek mainland, south of Igoumenitsa and north of Preveza .

What’s the vibe like?

Parga is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece.

At its heart is a scenic harbour with pastel-hued neoclassical buildings tumbling down from the hills. It spreads around a series of small bays with beaches backed by lush green mountains and overlooked by the remnants of a Venetian castle .

Parga definitely has island vibes . It has a similar feel to Paleokastritsa  and Skiathos Town .

It’s unsurprisingly popular, both with Greeks and international visitors. There’s a mix of package and independent tourism. It’s also visited by daytrippers from Corfu and Paxos .

The waterfront is lined with cafes and bistros offering modern fare. It comes alive in the evenings. There are plenty of traditional tavernas dotted around town, particularly up at the top of the hill where you’ll find wonderful sunset panoramas .

The main part of Parga around the harbour is packed with small old buildings and narrow streets. It widens out a bit around the beaches. Parga sure is pretty but it is also densely touristy – perhaps too much for some (if you think that might be the case for your then consider Preveza instead).

Parking in Parga is notoriously difficult so many visitors don’t bother renting a car and instead explore the broader area via Parga’s numerous water taxis and excursions.

The view from Parga castle.

What’s the beach like?

Busy Krioneri beach during the day.

Parga has 3 town beaches:

Ai Giannakis  – this is the main town beach (pictured above) located right next to the harbour. It’s the busiest beach and the most expensive for sun loungers.

Piso Krioneri – a smaller pebble beach, a short walk beyond Krioneri Beach. Entrance is via a path next to Golfo Beach Taverna. The best for swimming and snorkelling – there are lots of rocks at either side of the beach.

Valtos Beach – located on the other side of Castle hill, Valtos is by far the biggest and sandiest of the town beaches. It can be a hot and sweaty walk but worth it for the extra space. There’s an unorganised section right underneath the castle, or keep walking for beach clubs . The best sand is in the middle of the beach. Valtos is the only one of Parga’s beaches which is Blue Flag rated. Most of the beach is organised and it has lifeguards and watersports. Some sections of sun loungers at the far end are for hotel guest use only.

There are also several beaches you can reach by water taxi or car (there are no public buses to the beaches around Parga):

Lichnos Beach – this beach is similar to Valtos but it has small pebbles rather than sand and is enclosed by green hills. It has a large organised section but isn’t as busy as Valtos. There are several hotels based here plus a public car park. There are beach bars right on the sands.

Sarakiniko Beach – this beautiful beach is the furthest from Parga. As with Lichnos, there are several hotels based here and the beach is organised with sun loungers, watersports and a few tavernas. It’s smaller though and gets very busy in high season – the car park fills up quickly so get there early if you’re driving. The beach is a mix of coarse golden sand and small pebbles. It faces west so gets impeccable sunsets.

If you’re renting a car and are looking for a smaller wilder beach try Agios Giannakis or Agios Sostis ., or keep heading south to Ammoudia at the entrance to the River Acheron which has a camping vibe.

Activities and amenities

Exterior of Kryoneri Travel with posters and ATM.

Parga is a harbour town with a large seasonal population. It has good tourist infrastructure and a range of amenities including pharmacies, bakeries, souvenir shops, boutiques, rental agencies, tour agencies, and small mini-markets.

Do check out the remains of the Venetian Castle – entrance is not currently controlled so just mind your step as you walk around. It has amazing views over both the harbour and Valtos Beach and is a popular sunset photo spot. You can walk around it and down to Valtos . There’s plenty of shade around the castle grounds. There are plenty of bars on the way up for cocktails with a view.

The walk up from the harbour to the castle also contains some of the town’s best shopping (including a great little bookshop selling Greece-themed reading) and the streets at the top are home to some of the best tavernas including the ever-popular O Sakis (you might need to make a reservation).

An easy way to see some of the wider area is to catch the tourist train . There are 3 routes for Parga Trains – the watermill and Mylos Cafe (a great shady route to do on a hot day), Ali Pasha Castle, and a tour of the town and Valtos Beach .

There are many excursions on offer. The main ones are:

  • Acheron River – known in antiquity as the River Styx and the entrance to the underworld! A beautiful and freezing cold river
  • Boat trip to Paxos and Antipaxos   – two stunning islands

Additionally, some operators offer trips further afield but these don’t run every day and you might only find them in high season:

  • Day trip to Meteora
  • Zagoria and Vikos Gorge

You can also drive or bus to the Acheron River where you’ll find horse-riding and rafting .

Watersports are available at Valtos Beach including parasailing, inflatables, pedalos, kayaks, jet skis, wakeboarding, boat rental, and SUP.

The harbour itself is relatively small as is the number of boat trips on offer. There is no marina.

Nightlife in Parga isn’t crazy but there are plenty of late bars, cocktails, sports bars, and Greek nights.

Transport and accessibility

From the airport:

Parga is a 1-hour drive from Preveza-Aktion International Airport (PVK).

A taxi from the airport is €85-95.

Public transport:

Parga is served by the local KTEL Preveza bus service. A one-way bus ticket from Preveza to Parga is €7. From Preveza you can connect with buses to the airport, Lefkada, and other cities on the Greek mainland.

For more information check out How to Get from Preveza Airport to Parga (and Vice-Versa) .

The only other bus which might be of use to tourists is one that runs to Acheron Springs.

It’s worth noting that the bus stop is a 15-minute walk downhill to the main part of the town – see location on Google Maps .

Water taxis leave from the harbour.

The ticket office at Parga's bus stop.

Accessibility :

Car parking is very limited in Parga, don’t expect to be able to park at your hotel unless it’s explicitly listed. There are a few parking lots on the outer roads, prices are around €8 per day. There are several car rental agencies in town.

Some parts of Parga are very steep. If you stay on Valtos Beach you need to walk over the hill to get to the harbour (and vice versa), although a taxi is around €6.

Krioneri Beach has a road running behind it, although no parking, and the far end (next to Villa Rossa) can be entered without steps.

Piso Krioneri is accessed via a dirt track but there are no steps.

The eastern end of Valtos Beach has a large car park and road running alongside the beach. The western end is accessed via small side roads. There is no proper boardwalk along the sand.

The nearest Seatrac for wheelchair sea access is at Ammoudia.

Steep steps leading up to the top of Parga's hillside.

Prices in Parga are slightly above average – perhaps reflecting the lack of nearby competition. Accommodation is a mixed bag, you can find plenty of budget studios although you’re best to book in advance for the best prices.

Cafe and restaurant prices are most expensive down by the harbour and Krioneri Beach. It pays to do a bit of exploring. Tavernas are nearly always cheaper than restaurants or bistros.

Sunbeds vary by location – expect to pay €20 for a pair on Krioneri Beach in high season. On Piso Krioneri it’s more like €10. And on Valtos you can find sun beds that are free with a minimum spend.

Some examples of water taxi prices are:

  • Acheron River €16
  • Sarakiniko €15
  • Lichnos €12

Where to stay

For location and atmosphere, you can’t beat Villa Rossa which is right on Krioneri Beach.

If you want to stay close to Piso Krioneri then it doesn’t get any closer than Achilleas Hotel . This part of town is a bit less cramped than around the harbour and there are some nice tavernas and comfortable rooms around here like Serenity Luxury Suites .

Irida Boutique Hotel has amazing views and a pool that glitters at night.

After a proper beach resort hotel? On Valtos you’ve got Parga Beach Resort and Valtos Beach Hotel . The best luxury resort in the wider area though is the 5-star Elix Marbella which is further up the coast at Karavostasi Beach (a 30-minute drive).

On a budget? Paradise Hotel is cheap, central, and cheerful and you can enjoy breakfast around its small pool – perfect for those on a budget.

What to expect

Parga's a picture of Greece. Bright buildings jostling for space around a harbour, a headland overlooking the town crowned by a castle and an island with a gleaming white chapel out in the bay. This full day experience combines a guided tour of this scenic spot, including the castle, and plenty of free time to find a taverna for lunch, shop, swim or relax. Dimitra, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Panagia islet sits just across from Parga town – it's incredibly pretty, and close enough to swim to. On August 15th, there's a special service to honour the Virgin Mary and hundreds of worshippers flock to the island in dozens of boats.'

Kick off with a ferry ride from Corfu to Igoumenitsa on the mainland, and then transfer by road to Parga. Your guide will take you on a walking tour through the narrow, twisting streets, then uphill on a trail with old stone steps to visit the Venetian castle. Dominating the city from its hilltop perch, you'll get fantastic views over the harbour, the bay and the terracotta rooftops of the town.

Once you've had time to soak up that wonderful panorama, it's back down to the town for an afternoon of free time. Swim in one of Parga's lovely coves, go for lunch or enjoy some shopping in the historic centre. There's a clutch of al fresco cafés and boutiques to look around – keep an eye out for Lianolia, the highly regarded local olive oil variety – before making your journey back to Corfu over land and sea.

Set on a secluded bay of the Ionian Sea, Parga is a picture-perfect beach town located in mainland Greece and the most popular holiday destination in Epirus. Its unique natural beauty, its exotic beaches with lovely turquoise waters and its colourful houses all create a strong island character which makes visitors feel that it is an island and not a mainland town. Renowned for its distinctive, picturesque architecture, Parga has often been compared to a "picture postcard" or "painting"!

Visitors to Parga can wander around the stone-paved alleyways, swim in the crystal clear waters or taste the delicious greek cuisine in one of the traditional tavernas. One of the highlights of Parga is also the impressive 11th-century Venetian castle located on a top of a hill and offering spectacular views over the Town and the sea!

Explore Parga from Corfu with our Full-Day Cruise to Parga, Syvota & Blue Lagoon or our Full-Day Cruise to Parga & Paxos .
