Avis rental car, calling themselves DIY Jeeps, advertise rental of Jeep Wranglers as a self guided tour in Skagway Alaska. When we got there, we were told the company was Avis, and Avis had sold all but one or two Jeep Wranglers. It was a classic bait and switch scam as we were given a SUV instead, for the same price. We had rented three Wranglers and we're given three Cherokees. It was like we rented Ford Mustangs, and were given Ford Pintos instead, for the same price. False advertising. The workers said that Avis bought DIY Jeeps from the local owners, You can rent a SUV directly from Avis for much. cheaper. You'll be missing the boxed lunches and tour narration. Or, rent a SUV for an even better price from their competitors. We were very disappointed

While not typical cruisers, we chose an Alaskan cruise for a more economical way of visiting Alaska. As independent adventurers, we felt the excursions they offered from the ship seemed a bit mild, and wanted more. So we decided to look for something more adventurous. As seasoned Jeep owners and off-roaders it was a no brainer to book with DIY Jeep Tours (formerly Alaska Green Jeep Tours) Not only do you get the Jeep (all were new and well maintained...ours was a 2017 model) for the day, but you also receive a guide that provides mile by mile (kilometer by kilometer) directions for your day of exploration. It's self guided, so you can go at your own speed and stop when you'd like for all of the photo opportunities. If you head up to BC and then on to Yukon (remember your passport!) and return, you're looking at a 3 hour round trip. Plenty of time for stops. We'd recommend following the guide but also doing a little exploring of your own. For instance, the guide doesn't say much about heading toward Dyea, which is where the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is located (instead of going 'right' out of the city, you take a 'left' toward Dyea). Although I'd head toward the Yukon first, if you have time (which you should), definitely check that area out as well. If you're sick of the crowd on the cruise ship, want to go your own speed, and don't mind driving yourself, renting from DIY Jeep is for you.

Very conveniently located in intersection of State Street and 2nd (NOT in 510 Broadway). Booked online ahead of time. Very easy to check out and return the vehicle. The guidebook was helpful. The highlight of the drive for me was Yukon suspension bridge(mention the guidebook to get a discount), the Bove Island and Emerald Lake. We drove slow and made frequent stops, the whole trip took about 6 hours. Much better than going with a tour bus.

I'm so glad I found this company! The worst part of any cruise excursion is being crammed in a bus with a hundred people! Not my idea of vacation!! I booked 2 Jeeps for our group of 4. Each couple wanted to drive their own Jeep. We had a great time exploring the Yukon Hwy on our own. We stopped where we wanted to stop and stayed as long as we wanted to. It was nice to not have to be with a large group of people playing "follow the leader". There didn't seem to be a whole lot to do in Skagway so renting a Jeep to explore for the day is a great option!! They provided a small cooler in the back of the Jeep with a few bottles of water and a couple granola bars. The Jeep ran fine. We had no issues. We drove all the way to Emerald Lake. We stopped often to take pictures of waterfalls and frozen lakes and all the beautiful scenery. We skipped the musher's camp since there was 15 tour buses there when we passed by. Thank God we weren't on one of those tour buses!! Had lunch in Carcross.- It's not much of a town so don't expect tons of food choices! We didn't end up using the CD guide that the company provides. It was too confusing to listen to it and stay on pace with what the lady was talking about. But the notebook they supplied with all the 'points of interest' was very helpful! My only complaint is the "Jeep Rental Information" the company emails you before your rental is outdated! The paperwork says they have "dockside pickups" from the ship at 8 or 9am. This is not the case. You have to walk from the ship to their office which is about a mile. It also says they will provide you with a shuttle ticket to get back to the boat from their office... this also is not the case. You drop off your Jeep and then you walk back to the ship or pay a couple bucks to take the shuttle back. They do not offer you a shuttle ticket! Also, check the amount of gas in your Jeep. Our two only had 3/4 of a tank. We had to be sure to tell the guy before we drove off. They seem very casual. He said "just bring it back the same". We had a great time exploring on our own. I would highly recommend doing it! I would have rated them 5 stars if their information was up to date and we knew we had to walk a mile when we got off the ship!

For our 30th anniversary we decided to rent a jeep and drive through the Yukon Pass when our cruise stopped at Skagway, Alaska. We called them a week before we needed the jeep. The gal, Rene I think, was very friendly and helpful. She made it very easy. We got a confirmation by email and printed the agreement prior to arrival. Again, very easy! When we got to Skagway, our blue jeep was waiting for us (we slept in). My wife loves blue so she was very happy. The check-out was easy (see a pattern). The jeep came with a binder to read along the way and a CD narration of the pass so we knew what to look for. Super easy! The jeep itself was clean, roomy, gas tank was full, and had enough power to take on the mountains. The Yukon Pass was breath-taking. We stopped when we wanted. Took turns driving (very important). We were especially happy they told us to bring our passports so we drove into Canada. These guys rocked! We thoroughly enjoyed our drive and would use them again!

5 Plus stars for these people. This was a great experience. Rental was inexpensive and easy, All communications and service was excellent. They provide a CD and documents that describe all points of interest along the way. This was by far much better than any cruise ship excursion. We were able to stop any place and time we wanted while the tour bus just passed on by. We went all the way into Carcross, the smallest desert is a must see. We will repeat this experience. The customer service actually made the whole trip better. Thanks Alaska Green Jeep Tours.

I did a lot of research in determining what company to rent from in Skagway. I was so pleased with the communication and level of service that we received from Alaska Green Jeep. I highly recommend to anyone going to Skagway to rent from here. It was such an amazing experience traveling up through the Yukon at your own pace in the comfort of a private vehicle and not having to deal with a charter bus or fan with other groups of people. They even give you a binder of information for your road trip along with an audio CD. It's also a small world as the girl working in the shop was from the Pocono's in Pennsylvania which is where I was born and raised. Excellent customer service. Excellent experience all around.

We rented a jeep for the day in early July. The jeep was nearly new and performed flawlessly. The orientation they gave us was fine. The only two negatives were that the rental counter in the Popcorn Emporium building was hard to find (and the phone number listed on their email was incorrect) and when I confirmed that my son, age 23, was going to drive as I had understood he could when I made the reservation, they said that technically he wasn't allowed but whatever we wanted to do was "fine." Really? He didn't drive, but I might have rented a different car or not rented at all if they had given me the correct information on the phone.

What a great day. Got a very nice 4 door Jeep at Greens all the paper work was done when we arrived at 730 am . Map ,cd and a full tank of gas and we were off by 740 am. Return was as easy as the pick up we returned at about 330 pm. Went all the way to Emerald Lake in Canada. The cd gave us some good info and a few good stories about the area as well as the notebook full of good info. Thanks if I could give you more than 5 stars I would..

I read all these great reviews on TripAdvisor and other travel sites recommending this company so I convinced our friends to book this with us. We communicated over email & phone with the company and booked 2 jeeps. What swayed my decision to this over getting a regular rental car were 3 things: 1) The company confirmed that they would have car seats installed for us. 2) Reviews also said that they would have CB radios in the jeeps, which we thought would be handy for communicating with the other family since there's no cell reception on the Yukon highway. 3) Reviews and their website also said there would be a cooler with snacks and drinks in the jeep. When we got our jeeps, they did not have a car seat for us. Luckily we happened to have a carseat back in our cabin (we were originally not going to bring one on our trip based on the confirmation), so we went back to the ship for it. Only our jeep had a CB radio, our friends' jeep did not, so it was useless for us. Finally, there was no cooler, no drinks, no snacks. We enjoyed driving on the Yukon highway, but we could have gotten a regular rental car for much less and it would have been more comfortable. All 3 reasons we chose this company did not materialize. The jeep itself was pretty dirty inside and not very comfortable.
