The best excursions ever from cruise port Naples

The beautiful Amalfi Coastline is a must-do excursion from Naples, Italy

Jaw-droppingly beautiful, the area south of Naples, the Amalfi Coast, La Dolce Vita , a slice of paradise, and a destination worthy of a thousand more cliches, is worthy of a trip to Italy. And soon. The best shore excursions to the Amalfi Coast happen when your cruise ship drops anchor in the port of Naples.

One day, we hope there will be a mainstream, family cruise line that stays in the port in Naples overnight, giving us more time in this heavenly part of southern Italy. Only the smaller, ultra-luxury cruise ships and yachts offer this alternative now.

We are, of course, talking about the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri. Not far away, Pompeii sits under Mount Vesuvius and offers a glimpse of a tragic event in the streets, buildings, and remnants left behind. It’s enticing to want to witness the silent beauty of the ruined city.

Quick navigation

Amalfi coast favorites that hit your holiday hotspot

So, how do you squeeze all these sights into one day when your cruise ship anchors in the port? The answer is to have the help of a professional tour guide offering shore excursions to the Amalfi Coast, which may be your best cruise excursion yet.

Let’s look at these destinations separately and break them down so you know what to expect. Then, you can build your perfect day out on shore with a tour guide, a tailor-made trip just for you and your family. Alternatively, join a small group tour with an itinerary for the destinations you want to visit; there are many combinations.

Cruise port Naples – gateway to ancient history and stunning scenery

The cruise port of Naples is a bustling gateway to some of the country’s most iconic destinations. As one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, Naples offers visitors a chance to explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii, the stunning Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri, or the city of Naples itself.

With a rich history dating back to ancient times, Naples is a city of contrasts, blending its colorful past with a vibrant modern city.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the stunning Bay of Naples and the towering Mount Vesuvius in the distance. The port is modern and well-equipped, offering a range of facilities and services for visitors.

From here, it’s just a short journey to the city center, where you can stroll around the shops, sample delicious local cuisine, or visit one of the many museums and art galleries.

If you want to stay in the city during your day on shore, it’s a good idea to research what you want to see; the city can be busy and chaotic. Stick to the main streets, such as the areas around Piazza del Plebiscito, Castel dell’Ovo, and the shopping district of Via Toledo, which are generally safer and popular with tourists.

For most of us, however, visiting Naples is just too good an opportunity to miss to venture further afield. We are, of course, talking about Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. But what are your options with just one day in the port?

Discovering the best of Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast in one day with a tour guide

A shore excursion to Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast is a thrilling experience for cruise guests arriving in Naples. But seeing all three destinations in one day can also be challenging. Fortunately, a tour guide can help you make the most of your time and ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience.

We recommend some hand-picked tour guide companies in Italy that can help you have your perfect day. There are several ways to see these destinations. Your guide may suggest an alternative itinerary depending on your arrival and departure time. For example, starting with Pompeii instead of ending with it.

Capri – celebrities, glamour, and luxury shopping

Upon arrival at the port, your guide takes you by boat to the beautiful island of Capri, known for its stunning scenery and crystal-clear waters. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to see the island from the water and explore the famous Grotta Azzurra (The Blue Grotto). To pack everything into one day, a stop to go ashore and wander around Capri is not included here.

If you want to spend more time in Capri, we recommend omitting Pompeii from your itinerary. There are plenty of other tour options we can suggest to suit you.

From Capri, it’s back onto the boat and along the dramatic coastline of the Amalfi Coast. You will see stunning panoramic views and charming coastal towns.

Visitors are brought to shore, often at Amalfi, Ravello, or Positano. Each of these three towns has a unique charm and character and an abundance of stunning scenery that make them bucket-list destinations for every kind of traveler.

Amalfi – the town that names the coastline

Amalfi has fantastic architecture. The vibrant town center is filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Visit the iconic Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Piazza del Duomo. Climb the steps of this 9th-century church to see the beautiful Byzantine-style interior. The town has a centuries-old tradition of paper-making. The museum is in a fantastic old paper mill from the 13th century. It’s worth a visit – pick up some souvenirs from the gift shop before you exit the museum.

Discover Atrani, and Spiaggia di Atrani

Less than 10 minutes by bus from the center of Amalfi town is the tiny village of Atrani, with its beautiful beach. Hidden away from most tourists to the area, it’s well worth a visit to soak up the atmosphere, snap some photos, eat gelato, and paddle in the ocean.

The hidden gem of Ravello

Ravello is located high up in the hills so you can imagine the views of the Amalfi coastline from here. Dotted around are lush gardens and grand villas from bygone eras. Don’t miss visiting the 13th-century Villa Cimbrone . Now a stunning hotel and gardens, it oozes charm and character. We also recommend a visit to the mosaics of Ravello Cathedral. From here, get lost in the charming alleyways and courtyards in the town.

Positano – a picture-perfect paradise you can’t resist

Positano is a colorful town with postcard views of the pastel houses dotted up the hillside. Follow the narrow, winding streets that end at the black sand beach, the Spiaggia Grande. Along the way, discover shops with unique local crafts, authentic gelato, and limoncello tasting.

Pompeii, under the shadow of Vesuvius

From the Amalfi coast, you’ll switch to road transportation to Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in AD 79. You will have a comprehensive tour of the ruins, including the famous Villa of the Mysteries and the amphitheater, and learn the history and significance of each site.

Booking with a professional guide will save time and fit much more into your day, making the most of your visit. You will be taken back to Naples’s cruise port from Pompeii to board your ship again.

A knowledgeable tour guide means an unforgettable shore excursion

Throughout the day, your guide will provide insider knowledge and ensure you see and experience the best of each destination. With careful planning, you’ll be able to see Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast in one day. And return to your cruise ship with time to spare.

Our travel partners offer guarantees to get you back on time and cancellation policies for peace of mind when booking. Before confirming and paying, you must read the terms and conditions relevant to your booking.

With so much to see in this region, it’s no wonder Naples is a popular port of call for cruise passengers. So, seek out the cruise route with Naples on its itinerary, then pack your bags and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in this beautiful corner of Italy.

By: Author Girl with the Passport

Categories Europe

If you are planning a trip to Italy then a stop in the Amalfi Coast is an absolute must! Seriously, this place is next-level pretty and totally exceeded my admittedly high expectations.

However, many people opt to try the best tours to Amalfi Coast from Naples since they are short on time.

Yeah, there is just never enough time to experience all the awesomeness that Italy has to offer.

I mean, I have been to Italy dozens of times at this point and I still have in no way, shape, or form seen it all.

That’s why when I came to Naples for a day for the very first time I tried one of the best day tours from Naples to Amalfi Coast .

Yes, the trip felt a bit rushed. But, it gave me a great overview of the area so that I knew exactly where to go when I returned.

Since then I have done a bunch more tours and want to share with you my picks for the best tours to the Amalfi Coast from Naples.

This way, you can plan an amazing trip and see as much of Italy as humanly possible.

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

My #1 pick 🏆 for the best Amalfi Coast tour is this Amalfi Coast full-day trip . It’s well-reviewed, you see the area’s highlights, you get an epic guide, and you can do a fun boat trip.🛥️

Best Tours to Amalfi Coast from Naples

1. from naples or sorrento: amalfi coast full-day trip.

Not gonna lie, I am more than a little obsessed with this Amalfi Coast full-day trip from Naples . Now, no, you won’t get picked up from your hotel.

But, the pick-up location is easy to find and the staff is awesome. They do a really good job of making sure everyone gets to where they need to be.

Then, you’ll get whisked away by bus/coach to Positano. Once here, you’ll enjoy a guided tour with a pro-local guide before having an hour to walk around the narrow, cafe-filled streets.

My fave part though was getting dropped off at Amerigo Vespucci Square so that I could admire epic views of the beach.

“Wow wow wow! What an amazing tour. Obviously, the towns and cities of Amalfi are beyond beautiful in photos but just wait until you see it for yourself. The guided tour was helpful with bits of fascinating history sprinkled in and gives you a good overview of each town. Now that I’ve done the tour though, I’d rather go back by myself to my preferred towns. It was helpful since the drive is quite treacherous and we got to see so much of the coastline. We were lucky to travel in November as I couldn’t imagine navigating the drive or even walking through the towns will the sheer volume of tourists that arrive in peak season. Would definitely recommend this tour to others.” Taylor ( read more reviews now )

You’ll then hop on a speedboat tour to Amafli that is followed by a decent lunch in Amalfi (Think sandwiches and water so nothing fancy).

FYI, both are optional and are on offer for an additional fee. But, yeah, I thought they were worth it. Otherwise, chill in Amalfi and don’t miss the chance to visit Sant’Andrea Cathedral.

Viterbo and Bomarzo Tour

A trip to the Countryside! On a short trip from Rome, you'll arrive in the quaint countryside of a town called Viterbo, an Etruscan origin as many towns in the area. Even though it is said that this village was founded in the early centuries Anno Domini, it's historical relevance started with the fortification by the Northern King, Desiderius, in the vain attempt to conquer Rome. It has later become one of the Papal States, and desired by Emperors, for centuries, due to its favorable strategic position. When finally, in 1905, it became a Free Commune. It hosts incredible buildings and structures, aside from the breathtaking views. Like the Papal Palace an outstanding building adjacent to the Duomo of Viterbo, it has actually hosted Papacy for approximately 20 years. Since Rome, at the time of Pope Alexander the 4th, was becoming too violent. Viterbo was the perfect environment for the Holy See to continue its work. So of course, this Papal Palace is an incredible building, absolutely worth a visit. The Duomo of Viterbo right next door, is the town Cathedral dedicated to Saint Laurence. Built in the 12th Century where a smaller church used to be. A few interesting notes about this Cathedral are the beautiful original facade from 1570 and the fact that it is built on top of an 8th century church, which was originally built on top of a temple in devotion to Hercules. Aside from these main sites in Viterbo, there are several other attractions to visit Like the Medieval  neighborhood, hosting incredible architectures. And the National Etruscan Museum. Viterbo is not the only charming place you'll see. In fact there are a few other stops your tour driver will make, that will make your head spin! Bagnaia and Bomarzo Visit Villa Lante in Bagnaia One of the greatest structural accomplishments of the Italian 1500s. In Villa Lante, you will see the fountains of the moors, the two mansions (Gambara and Montalto), and a spectacular system of the fountains and water games and a beautiful park. The entire Villa (between the garden and park) occupies a surface of 22 hectares. The particularity of Lante Villa is shown by the magnificence of the garden, especially in the architectural work. You will have lunch in a typical “trattoria” before visiting Bomarzo. Bomarzo is a fantastic garden. It slips into the theatrical, symbol-laden traditions of the Baroque period. Unsurprisingly, after several centuries of neglect, it was rediscovered during the 1950s by surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, who found inspiration in the garden’s mixture of natural and bizarre design. After a beautiful day in the Countryside, visiting the most magical, hidden locations, you’ll return to your requested location in Rome.

Bomarzo, Caprarola and Calcata Tour

A tour to visit the Monsters Park of Bomarzo, Caprarola another incredible village and finally Calcata. You’ll discover some of the most amazing features and hidden gems. Certainly a day to remember. First stop will be Bomarzo (about a 1 hour drive) were you can visit the “Monster Park”. This garden is an extraordinary sight, because with its strange, disturbing sculptures (taken from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso) it was created by Vicino Orsini, Duke of Bomarzo, to rival Caprarola and the Villa Lante. You’ll continue to Caprarola where you can visit the famous Palazzo Farnese. Initially intended to be a fortress by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, its construction started in 1525, and was later transformed by Vignola into a magnificent palace. Antonio Tempesti, Giovanni Il Vecchio, Giovanni Antonio Da Varese, Raffaellino da Reggio, Giacomo Del Duca and Jacopo Bertoia worked to realize this magnificent summer residence. Two bridges connect the palace to the immense Italian Garden and to the park on the back side of the palace. The Summer and Winter gardens encircle the Palace. Fountains, grottos, nymphaea, and numerous statues enrich the way between hedges and large staircases. *Eventually, if the Farnese Palace in Caprarola is closed on the day of your visit, we will substitute it with a visit of the magnificent Orsini-Odescalchi Castle of Bracciano, perched overlooking the shores of the beautiful Bracciano Lake Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. On the way back to Rome, stop at Calcata. This very old village, once an outstanding center of the Faliscans, is now one of the best kept, picturesque towns in the region.

Rome in a Day Tour

Welcome in Rome! There is really no better way to start a Roman vacation than with this private tour. One of our personal tour driver will welcome you at your hotel or any other place of your convenience in Rome, to whisk you away, on a 7 hour trip through history, art, archeology and the basic Rome way of living that is just a delight and so interesting to experience. This Tour of Rome will start off with a stop in the famous Piazza Venezia a famous circular square constantly beaten by hundreds of cars and vespas and motorini (what we call mopeds and bikes). While horns are blaring in the traffic, passerby's always in a hurry and the famous Italian charm for hand gestures and raised voices the main constant, all you will notice is the monumental structure overlooking the Piazza. A monument dedicated to Italy's last king Victor Emanuel the Second, and resting place of the Unknown soldier. A fallen soldier from WW1 that is laid to rest there to honor and tribute every Italian soldier who's fought and fallen in every war old or recent. You can notice An imposing horseman in a giant bronze statue, overlooking the entire city center, to magnify the importance of the Italian Kingdom in its glory days. And just above is a building, temple-like in structure, with white marble steps and columns, placed on top of one of Rome's legendary hills. Italian flags hanging on it's ends. This monument is really hard to miss. Fun fact: The monument of Victor Emmanuel, officially called Altare della Patria (the Altar of the Nation) is also known simply as the wedding cake. For it's distinctive shape, built in white, marble layers, one floor after the other. Resembling a big white wedding sheet cake. This altar shares its space with Capitoline Hill, Capitol Hill or simply known as Campidoglio. It is one of Rome's 7 hills placed in between Campus Martius and the Roman Forum, and it is head of the Roman Government, With an incredible square commissioned by Pope Paul the third and created by Michelangelo himself in the 16th century. But Capitol Hill does not only hosts Rome's City hall, the Mayor's office and the Capitolini Museums (which offers a vast amount of marble artifacts, artwork and other curiosities from Roman times) but it offers AMAZING VIEWS of the city below, on one end of the hill is Piazza Venezia, Campus Martius and modernization, on the other the Ancient citadel of the Roman Forum. A perfect balance between present and the past. Speaking of Roman Forum, you absolutely go across Via dei Fori Imperiali, an ancient way in Rome that crosses this part of town, with the Forum's archeological site on both sides. Envision Temples, Market places, Marble buildings and life conducted in these squares centuries ago. This is where Roman Senate would reunite, where citizens would gather to worship archaic divinities and conduct their business. To keep the Ancient Roman theme alive, walking straight through the ancient Roman Forum you will arrive at the Colosseum The one and only Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheater An ancient, imposing structure built to delight and entertain the people of Rome, in the prime of its years. With gory, cruel hunts and gladiator fights but also fun scenes of Naval battles, where they would fill the Arena with water and float around in ships. A colossal building in the heart of Rome, to gather the people, to bring people together. We absolutely recommend a stop here. But Rome is full of wonderful things to see, in a fun, intuitive and entertaining way. With squares, steps and fountains and churches. Take Piazza Navona for example The most extravagant of Rome’s Square, adorned with the fountain of The Four Rivers by Bernini, and the church of his rival, Borromini. Visit Piazza Della Rotonda, where you can see the Pantheon, the best preserved and enchanting monument of ancient times. The Spanish Steps A wonderful square, world famous for the beautiful stair case that comes down from Trinità dei Monti with beautiful views of  Via dei Condotti, intersecting with via del Corso. The most "In" streets for shopping, with great boutiques and haute couture. Walking along the narrow streets you can find other curiosities such as the mighty Pantheon on Piazza della Rotonda, the once temple dedicate to All the Gods, the Ancient Roman building is now an active Catholic church. Then, of course there is the Trevi Fountain, a little further down the streets. Make sure to take tons of pictures of this magnificent fountain that attracts so many people from all over the world, in that small square. This private tour is a whirlwind of emotions! You'll be catapulted into the Middle Ages, Ancient Roman Times, then to Renaissance times, and back to Roman times. With a stop to grab a quick bite to eat, if you like. Your tour driver will know the perfect place. In fact, near the end of the tour, you will have to make another mandatory stop at the Aventine Hill, another majestic hill, hosting picture perfect views of the Eternal City. Then head to the Circus Maximus, where chariot races were performed in imperial Rome, as we can see in one of the classic American movies, Ben Hur. At the end of the tour, your tour driver will take you wherever you like to be dropped off at, hotel or other. This itinerary can be tailored and can change, so it's not a strict preview. All this is just to give you a taste of all the wonderful places you could see during your time out on the streets of Rome. *Upon request, the icing on the cake would be to reserve one of our professional guides: if you want to enrich your activity, we highly recommend selecting the service of one of our expertise guides for the day!

After that, you’ll head to the Pantheòn, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and enjoy the outstanding view of Rome from the Pincio Terrace, and Piazza Navona. After so many fantastic things you've already seen this morning, you'll have to "carb up" for the best part of your tour! The Vatican Museums Your private tour driver will take you at the entrance, that unmissable doorway, surmounted by high walls and a distinctive plaque that says " Musei Vaticani" he will give you all the instructions on how to enjoy your time in the Museums completely along with the Sistine Chapel. *Upon request, we can arrange one of our expert guides inside the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: Having one of our qualified guides would offer you an immersive opportunity, to learn absolutely everything there is to know about this incredible place: From peculiar traditions to art, history and literature, along with granting you direct access to Saint Peter's Basilica. Since the only known public entrance to Saint Peter's would be from all the way outside in the Square (for which the lines are usually very long) our guides have permission to enter the Basilica directly from inside the Vatican, after you've visited the Sistine Chapel! Visiting the Basilica other than with the guide would not be possible. Since it's entrance is free, it is usually very crowded, lines are very long not leaving enough time for you to visit it, if without a guide Since we have top level experts, the costs are appropriate to the quality of service. In case you are considering one of our private guides to take an exclusive tour of the Vatican, you can select its service during the booking process to add it to the cost for the tour. However, if you are more incline to visit the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, without the Basilica as a priority, we definitely recommend visiting the Vatican on your own. At your own pace, to fully appreciate everything you'll see, without having to stick to a prearranged itinerary. You could also consider Audio-guides, with amazing explanations and virtual itineraries to choose from.  For a personalized tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. At a lighter rate, given the extra costs. We will be happy to arrange skip the line tickets, with privileged entrance of course, (bookable as extras) for you to explore the Vatican's freely on your own. This way you can enjoy visiting each chamber, admiring beautiful artifacts, statues, paintings and frescoes in any of the Museums inside the Vatican you'd like to see, entirely at your own pace! Audio-guide tickets, to download directly on your phone, for an interactive tour of the Museums and Sistine Chapel, still at your own pace. Spending your time in awe and your nose in the air! The most incredible beauty awaits! Visiting the Vatican Museums on your own, will allow you to visit the different wings , like Raphael's Rooms, Cortile Della Pigna, Belvedere, Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries or the Gallery of Maps. And the Sistine Chapel. Since the Basilica of Sain't Peter's has free access, they've devoted it's entrance directly from Saint Peter's Square, so there isn't a way to enter the Basilica from inside the Museums. Just know that depending on the number of visits in a day, some wings might be closed. But this won't matter at all, we can assure you, there is just so much to see, you'll hardly even notice! Last but not least, on this Rome and Vatican tour, the magnificent Sistine Chapel! This incredible masterpiece, Michelangelo's heritage. We don't want to say too much about it, because we don't want to spoil the surprise. Just know that you will have some time, inside this chapel, to take a moment. To reflect on the overwhelming beauty. Take a seat in one of the chairs placed at it's sides, or stand in the middle and look up, to study the different details of the scenes and stories that have inspired the artist. Then you'll head to the exit, walking along the famous spiral stairwell. Still in awe, after the incredible experience. You'll reunite with your tour driver at the exit and then head back to Civitavecchia Port, to board your ship in perfect time.

My mom and I went on our first out-of-the-U.S. trip together and we had a wonderful time! Getting there was a bit rocky due to flights being cancelled, but our group and tour guide made us feel welcome immediately. I loved the walks and the views, and our tour guide Gennaro knows this whole area like the back of his hand. We couldn't have asked for a more helpful and kind guide for this trip.

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast

This was my first tour and I'm happy to say it exceeded all my expectations. It was exactly the type of holiday I wanted, hiking in beautiful scenery with good company and fabulous food. The food was absolutely fantastic - homemade and some homegrown. The hosts at our accommodations were wonderful and did so much extra for us. Our guide was a perfect for this trip, and she helped make a great itinerary even better. I am already planning my next tour and have recommended this to many people already.

Highlights of Sorrento,Capri and Amalfi Coast Private Tour Tour

Highlights of Sorrento,Capri and Amalfi Coast Private Tour

We had a wonderful time in Italy!!!! Omar was so very helpful in planning our trip of a lifetime. Our private tour guide was Gabriella. She was very knowledgeable about Naples, Sorrento, Capri, and all about the Amalfi Coast. While in Naples she knew where to get the wallet pizza, espressos, pastries, etc. We saw Cathedrals, Roman roads, gorgeous buildings, etc. Next we went to Pompeii which was incredible. It's amazing that the ruins have lasted this long. We also went to a wine tasting at a winery, "Tears of Christ" at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. We had a five course lunch with five different wines, and the setting was beautiful. We had multiple private drivers. Marco was with us a couple of days. Gabriella, Marco, David and I had a fun time touring Italy and they were both extremely knowledgeable on the coast and the sites. We had two lemoncello tastings, one in Sorrento and one in Scala. We actually saw where they make the lemoncello and how the process is done, which you can do it home. I am sure it won't be the same! We went to Capri on a slightly dreary day. But it was beautiful. We took a boat ride around the coast and the scenery left you speechless. We did some shopping....saw where the perfumes were made and of course purchased a couple of bottles. We stayed in three hotels....Naples, Sorrento, Ravello. All were beautiful! We love the scenery of the country, the food, and the history. It is amazing how the homes, hotels and businesses are literally built on the rock on a high cliff, and the lemon grove terraces on the steep mountains were so lush. Gabriella told us history about the roads and the rock walls, we passed the oldest hotel in the area...lots of little things. She and the drivers knew where to stop and take the most breathtaking pictures for our memories. We would highly recommend this tour!

Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento Tour

Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento

I had a great time in this active trip called Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento, and I would have given 5 stars if the description of the hikes were more correctly explained, or if of the difficult hikes were interchangeable with less strenuous days. The first three walks were very difficult, not “leisurely” as described. The Pino Gorge walk to San Lazaro of 5 kilometers, that took about 2 hours was nothing but easy. On our cellulars we recorded over 10,000 steps and 50 flors up. There were an equal number of floors down, and not easy at all. The steps were uneven, really high, broken, slippery and it was dangerous to take your eyes away from them. The afternoon walk was longer, and harder, being described by a fellow traveler as “Stairway to Heaven”. Next day, another walk on the Ancient Republic’s Path. This was more difficult than the day before. We covered 6 kilometers. The description in the itinerary states “a total ascent of 90 meters and a 755 meters decent. The health data on my cellphone showed 21,863 steps and 116 floors up. I regret I don’t have the exact number of floors we descended, but they were astronomical, considering the 755 meters of decent. The following day half of us were afraid to attempt the “Walk in the Ferreire NP” and missed that visit. Scheduling three days in a row long, three difficult walks was a mistake, and describing them as leisurely, or even moderate was not accurate. We are only people, not related to Superman. For the rest of the trip, visiting Ravello, Capri Island, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and ending with the Path of the Gods descent was great, but still not easy. I have to highly recommend the Hotel Risorgimento, were we spent a week. It was really impressive that in a small, not touristic town, to find such high quality place, excellent food, cleanness, present owners. We were treated as family, respected and made welcome. That was an excellent choice.

What people love about amalfi coast tours from naples.

Carla was very kind and helpful on our tour
The accommodation was a bit too small but wasn’t as big a deal as we were out for most of the day. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a great way to make new friends!
Overall I really enjoyed the Amalfi walking tour. Staying in a small community was a welcome change from the large city tourist experience. The accommodations were as expected, and the Agritourisimo owners were lovely hosts. I especially enjoyed the homemade pasta and desserts. The wine tasting dinner was a lot of fun and the pizza was excellent. I could not have asked for a nicer group of fellow hikers. Our guide, Peter, was very personable, attentive to everyone’s needs and abilities and was knowledgable about the region. I am a 67 year old Canadian woman in excellent health and keep physically very active. I live in a location that is predominantly flat land. I made an effort to climb hills as much as possible to train for the walk but walking on ground is not enough to prepare for all the stone steps on the walks. Stair climbing and descending would be at good training routine. I found going down the steps very hard on the knees, but they felt better after a couple of days of walking on this terrain. I would caution anyone with knee or hip joint problems about choosing this tour. A 76 year old woman in our group had no problems at all. However, after falling on the loose rock the first day, an 85-year-old man from North America was not able to participate in most of the walks. Peter was able to suggest alternate activities for him and his wife and they were still able to enjoy the trip. Anyone older should have excellent balance and be used to walking on uneven terrain and climbing up and down rocky obstacles. I think an upper limit of 85 is overly optimistic for this tour.

Also known as Maschio Angioino Castle, Castel Nuovo is located at the exit of the cruise terminal area. This massive 13th-century military castle dominates the harbor and Piazza Municipio with its Neoclassical Palazzo San Giacomo, which houses the City Hall. The castle has five imposing towers and served as a royal seat for the kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815. 2. Castel dell Ovo

The majestic seaside castle is located at the southernmost tip of Naples city, on a peninsula (a former island) with an excellent strategic position that dominates the Gulf of Naples. It is situated 1.5 km/1 mile or a 20-minute walk from the Naples cruise port and is well worth visiting, as it is the oldest standing fortification in Naples built by the Normans in the 12 th century. There is no entrance fee, and you can climb to its two towers and an observation deck from where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

3. Piazza del Plebiscito

Situated around 800 meters, or a 10-minute walk from the Naples cruise port, the 19th-century Piazza del Plebiscito is one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Naples. With its 53-meter high dome and Greek-style columns, a large, monumental Basilica San Francesco di Paola (Church of Saint Francis) dominates Piazza del Plebiscito. The Basilica was built in the Neo-classical style and is reminiscent of Rome’s Pantheon. Simple, yet impressive, the interior of the church features valuable and beautiful architecture and artwork.

The renowned 18th-century  San Carlo Theater and Opera House (Teatro di San Carlo), as well as the 17th-century sumptuously decorated Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli), are other two important buildings that you can see around the square.

4. Castel Sant’Elmo

Perched atop the Vomero hill overlooking the city of Naples, Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval, star-shaped fortress with a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Originally built as a royal residence, it later served as a military stronghold. Today, Castel Sant’Elmo houses the Naples Museum of Medieval Art, showcasing a diverse collection of artifacts.

The highlight of the castle is the breathtaking panoramic views of Naples and the Bay of Naples that you can admire from the top. The easiest way to reach the castle is by funicular that you can catch on Via Toledo (one of the main streets located a 10-minute walk from the port). The funicular runs all the time and will take you to the top of the hill. From the top station, you still need to walk about 10 minutes to the castle. A small entrance fee is required to enter the castle (it was 5€ in 2023).

6. Naples Old Town

Naples is a vibrant city bursting with life, full of colorful, authentic streets where you can find plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, street sellers, and much more. There are several streets you can explore, and they are all within walking distance from Naples cruise port.

The most famous ones are the pedestrian streets Via Toledo and Via Chiaia – they are both located a 15-minute walking distance from the port and they meet at Piazza del Plebiscito and Fontana del Carciofo. They are super crowded and packed with countless shops, restaurants, bars, and pizzerias offering mouth-watering pizzas, panzerotti, pasta, and other Italian authentic dishes.

Another famous street that traverses the Naples historic center is Spaccanapoli – a narrow, straight, and long promenade where you can explore historic churches, palaces, bustling piazzas, unique shops, and a large number of restaurants, bars, and open-air cafes.

7. Taste the Local Pizza

When it comes to tasting pizza in Naples – it is an absolute must! The pizza was invented in Naples, and in every place where I tried it – that was the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life! For over one century, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele has had the reputation of making the best pizza in Naples, and that’s where Julia Roberts was featured indulging in a slice of pizza in the “Eat, Pray, Love” movie. The pizzeria is only 20 minutes’ walk away from the port!

9. Galleria Borbonica

Also known as Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel, it is an impressive underground passage built for military purposes to connect the Royal Palace to military barracks in Naples. It is situated 2 km/1.2 miles, or a 25-minute somewhat uphill walk from the Naples cruise port and represents one of the most unique places you can visit in Naples. Constructed in the 19 th century, the stunning underground tunnels served as an escape route for the royal inhabitants, and also as a shelter for Naples residents during the bombardments during World War II.

Old cars from 1970, Bourbon Tunnel

Time permitting, I highly recommend you take one of the Bourbon Tunnel tours , as they are a fascinating way to discover the important and emotional moments in the history of Naples. On tour, you can visit underground caves, a restored ancient cistern, vintage artifacts dating from WWII, pieces of sculptures, old cars and bikes, and much more. If you are seeking some adrenaline rush, you can go for an adventure or Speleo tour as well. Overall, I was truly impressed by the visit, and I strongly suggest you put it on your Naples bucket list.

10. Pompeii

Pompeii visit is by far the most popular day trip from Naples, due to the huge historical importance of this world-famous archaeological site. Nestled at the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, the ancient city of Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and other neighboring towns, was buried under 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of the powerful Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The everyday life of this wealthy city was frozen at the moment it was buried, thus the excavated site offered a unique snapshot of Roman life and its inhabitants.

Pompeii archeological site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most visited attractions in Italy. Today, visitors can roam through the elegantly paved streets of ancient Pompeii, admire the ruins of the lavish mansions and villas of distinguished Romans, visit their elaborate bathhouses, a multitude of Roman temples, a massive 20.000-capacity Amphitheatre of Pompeii, and more. You can learn about the tragic destiny of the ancient city and over 2.000 Pompeii residents on a self-guided tour, or on a guided tour which I highly recommend.

If  the weather is hot and sunny, make sure you bring a hat and water, as the largest portion of the Pompeii Archeological Park is not shaded. Keep an eye on your belongings, as there are many pickpockets on the trains in particular. Wear comfortable shoes , as there is a lot of walking involved. The ruins of Pompeii are partially wheelchair accessible.

How to Get from Naples to Pompeii?

The distance from Naples cruise port to Pompeii Archeological Park is 25 km/15.5 miles, or a 25-minute drive. There are several ways to get from Naples to Pompeii.

  • BOOK A TOUR – Although it takes a full day to explore Pompeii, cruise ships offer half-day tours to Pompeii from Naples . These tours often include traveling in big groups, but in my opinion, to fully enjoy the place, you should go for a  small-group tour . In case you decide to visit on your own, make sure you book Pompeii skip-the-line tickets to avoid long queues and crowds.
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – In case you’ve already booked your entrance tickets to Pompeii, the private transfer is the best, fastest, and most convenient option to get to the ruins. It’s even cheaper than a taxi and guarantees you a safe return to the ship. Compare the transfer prices from Napoli to Pompei
  • TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO POMPEII – Take the Circumvesuviana train at Napoli Centrale (Naples central train station at Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at Pompei Scavi/Villa Dei Misteri stop. The train ride lasts 30-35 minutes, and trains go every 30 minutes. Once you get off at Pompeii Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri, the entrance to the archeological site is only a 5-minute walk. The Circumvesuviana line to Pompeii is quite busy, and you might not be able to get a seat. There is no luggage disposal area. Due to the large crowds on the trains, I suggest you save at least one hour for the ride each way.

11. Herculaneum Ruins

Located around 15 km/9.5 miles, or less than a 30-minute drive from Naples cruise port, Herculaneum is another ancient city in Campania that was destroyed in the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD along with Pompeii and several other neighboring towns. Smaller in size than Pompeii, but equally wealthy, Herculaneum was a popular resort town and seaside destination for many Roman patrician families.

Today, visitors can stroll through the ruins of Herculaneum and visit the wealthy Roman’s notable houses, sumptuously adorned baths, halls decorated with frescoes and mosaics, splendid arches and columns, spacious atriums… The most popular ruins are Men’s Baths, Hall of the Augustals, Samnite House, House of Relief of Telephus, and Fornici. It takes only 2-3 hours to visit Herculaneum, which is an ideal option for a half-day trip.

Some parts of the Herculaneum ruins are not wheelchair accessible, and it is highly recommended to leave kids’ strollers or pushchairs at the free bag check counter at the entrance.

How to Get to Herculaneum from Naples?

  • BOOK A TOUR – You can visit Herculaneum with a cruise ship shore excursion or on a private, customized tour (always the most convenient option!)/ small group tour . The archeological site is not as large as Pompeii, and a Herculaneum tour lasts from 2-3 hours.
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – It takes a 30-minute drive to get from Naples to Herculaneum and it’s always the most comfortable option.
  • TAKE A TRAIN TO HERCULANEUM – A train ride is an alternative option. Take the Circumvesuviana train at Naples central station (Napoli Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at the “ Ercolano Scavi ” stop, located a 10-minute walk from Herculaneum. Circumvesuviana train line runs every 30 minutes between Naples and Sorrento and has several stops, including Pompeii and Herculaneum stops. The train ride from Naples to Herculaneum lasts 15-20 minutes.

12. Mount Vesuvius

Towering over the city of Naples and the ruins of the ancient Pompeii, Herculaneum, and neighboring cities, the mighty Vesuvius dominates the Gulf of Naples and is one of several volcanoes that form the Campanian volcanic arc. Vesuvius has become notoriously world-famous due to the eruption in 79 AD that buried the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae, killing 16.000 people overall. The Vesuvius has erupted over 50 times for thousands of years, and its last eruption lasted from 1913-1944. It is still considered active, and one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

Today, it is possible to visit the Vesuvius National Park and explore its trails, the Great Cono crater (Il Gran Cono) situated at 1.000 meters above sea level, and the park’s rich historical and cultural heritage, consisting of the museum, archeological sites, the Roman villas, and historical buildings. If you are into hiking, there is a network of 11 paths of a total length of 54 km (33.5 mi) that you can explore and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Naples, Lazio, and the Campania region.

The Mount Vesuvius hike is moderate and you should wear comfortable shoes. Bring a hat, water and of course a good camera . The visit to the crater lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Check the weather because if it rains, you won’t be able to see the crater (it is closed for safety reasons).

Hot to Get from Naples to Mount Vesuvius?

  • BOOK A TOUR – Cruise ships normally offer the Mount Vesuvius hiking tours, but the number of spots available on these tours is quite limited, so make sure you pre-book the tickets to ensure your spot. If you are looking for a more private option, you should go for   small group tours .
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – The distance between the Naples cruise port and Mount Vesuvius is roughly 20 km/12.5 miles, or a 30-minute drive.
  • VISIT VESUVIUS BY TRAIN – Take the Circumvesuviana train for Sorrento or Poggiomarino via Pompeii at Naples central station (Stazione Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at either Ercolano Scavi station (the one where you get off for Herculaneum) or Pompei – Villa Dei Misteri (the one where you get off for Pompeii). From both train stations, you can hop on the local bus going to Vesuvius. The local bus company is EAV, and the buses run quite rarely (every hour or even more).

13. Sorrento

Located on the opposite side of the Gulf of Naples, about 50 km/31 miles from the port of Naples, Sorrento is a magnificent cliffside town and a popular tourist resort on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Sorrento boasts a scenic coastline, gorgeous landscapes, and a multitude of colorful houses, and is widely known for its wood-carving traditions, ceramics, marquetry, and lacework shops.

You can stroll through its lively Tasso Square (Piazza Tasso), the central square where you’ll find quaint shops, restaurants, and bars serving delicious Italian specialties and local wine. Delight in the views of the picturesque port of Sorrento – Marina Grande , browse the shops of Via san Cesareo – the main shopping hub of the city, visit a beautiful 14th-century Cathedral of Sorrento , or take in the breathtaking views of the bay from Villa Comunale park and gardens.

Amalfi Coast consists of a multitude of villages, the most famous one being Amalfi – a tiny, seaside village boasting narrow, cobblestone streets lined with cafes, shops, and typical Italian restaurants, and a beautiful St. Andrew Cathedral (Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea). The cathedral dominates the main village square – Piazza del Duomo , and dates from the 9 th century when the original church was built. The Cathedral features a magnificent 18th-century Norman-Arab-Byzantine façade and the splendid Cloister of Paradise that served as a burial ground for the noble Amalfi families back in the Middle Ages. Starting off early in the morning, you’ll have all day to enjoy 3 of the hottest tourist destinations in the area. If that sounds like fun to you, I highly recommend signing up for the Private Amalfi Coast Deluxe Ful-Day Trip from Naples Tour  before it sells out.

Your trip starts out with your guide picking you up from your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about booking and paying for your own transportation anywhere.

Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery from outside the window as your guide tells you and your party interesting tales about the area.

This vehicle was one of the best I’ve traveled in anywhere in Europe, complete with a non-alcoholic mini bar so you can stay comfortable and hydrated as you travel from one location to the next.

The first stop of the day is Sorrento, known for its charming cobblestone streets, elegant architecture, and friendly locals. Oh, they also have incredible food and coffee, so if you’re into that make sure to try a freshly-made espresso.

Have some free time to explore Sorrento as you best see fit, or you can choose to go on a historical tour with your guide – whatever you prefer.

Then, head on over to the pastel-colored cliffside town of Positano, where you’ll go on another tour through this slice of heaven stacked like a painter’s palette.

While the postcard-perfect views are certainly magnificent, make sure to enjoy the laidback sophistication on every corner and the delicious seafood.

Ravello is a fantastic respite from the hustle and bustle of more “famous” coastal destinations, where you’ll really be able to appreciate the Italian culture, with art, music, villas, and more.

3. Amalfi Coast Day Trip from Naples: Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello

  • Duration: 8 to 9 hours
  • Departure: Stazione Marittima Molo Angioino, 80133 Naples
  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes: Transport by air-conditioned minivan or minibus, driver for groups of 6 to 8, driver plus a guide for groups of 9 to 19

The truth is that there are a ton of people who’d like to visit the Amalfi Coast while in Naples, but they don’t know how to go about it. After all, Naples has some insane traffic and the roads to the coast are winding and intense at times.

How about have an expert lead the way and take care of everything on the Amalfi Coast Day Trip from Naples: Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello Tour .

This tour has also been one of the most educational for me, with our guide teaching us so much about everything we saw in each of the 3 spots.

After all, if you’re going to explore the Amalfi Coast, you can’t just dip your toe in the water – you have to go all-in! What better way than with a day tour that will actually show you these 3 iconic places the way they deserve?

The gorgeous hilltop retreat of Ravello is the first of the bunch, where you’ll be able to wander among the beautiful gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.

The views here were simply breathtaking, which makes a lot of sense as to why it’s known to be a haven for artists who come from all around the globe. Next is Positano, which is known for its dramatic cliffs, sun-kissed beaches, and famous pastel-painted buildings.

I loved the balance of laidback lifestyle combined with a sophistication that I didn’t see in many of the bigger “fashion-focused” cities. Here, you can snag some of the most chic Moda Positano clothes and jewelry, enjoy fresh seafood, and wander around the charming streets.

The grand finale of Amalfi awaits, where you’ll see everything from beaches to a magnificent cathedral while enjoying a handmade Italian ice cream or coffee.

4. Amalfi Coast Full-Day Trip From Naples

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure:  Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, 91, 80142
  • Departure Time:  8:30 AM
  • Includes: Smaller group sizes, round trip transportation in air-conditioned bus, shared boat ride from Positano to Amalfi, local guide, gourmet sandwiches, bottled water

If you’d like to see the Amalfi Coast the right way, while still sticking to your budget, this is the one for you. I can’t believe how budget-friendly the tour was, especially when you consider the quality that these guides offer.

The Amalfi Coast Full-Day Trip from Naples Tour is perfect if it’s your first time in Italy and want to experience this magical place with professional local guides. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes get bored if a tour only consists of the guide taking us around on a specific itinerary.

Sometimes I’d like to go out on my own and explore each location after learning about it, which is what you’ll get the opportunity to do with this experience.

It balances guided tours along with free time very well, allowing you to ask your guide questions or recommendations if you’d like them.

Our driver-slash-guide was absolutely incredible on the winding coastal roads, which put me at ease in what would’ve been an otherwise very stressful situation.

The small bus was very comfortable, and you’ll get to enjoy plenty of amazing views of the beach, explore the cafe-lined streets, and take time shopping for souvenirs.

The boat transfer (available during the summer only) only elevated the tour experience further, followed up by a delicious lunch consisting of gourmet sandwiches.

I enjoyed exploring the towns on our own after learning about each one, seeing the famous Sant’Andrea Cathedral, the 13th-century Villa Rufolo with pristine gardens that look like from another time, among many other sites.

Whether you’re just a casual traveler or a history buff who wants to soak up as much knowledge as possible, I know you’re going to love this one.

5. Amalfi Coast Full-Day Trip From Naples

  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Includes: Round trip transportation, multi-language assistant, 30-minute boat trip in Amalfi, lunch, bottled water

Italy is known for its beauty, passion, and savoring life to the fullest. With the From Naples: Amalfi Coast Full-Day Trip Tour , you’ll be able to do exactly that and see the coast as it was meant to be experienced.

So much so, that I’m sure I’ll take this tour again the next time I’m in Naples! You’ll be picked up from your hotel in the morning by your guide, so you just have to make sure you have good walking shoes and sunscreen on!

Depending on your group size, you’ll either ride in an air-conditioned bus, van, or car – however, all of them are very comfortable and have enough room for everyone to relax in.

As you cruise to your first destination, enjoy the charming scenery outside your window as your guide regales you with historical tales about each location.

The romance, fashion, and laidback lifestyle become one here, creating a very specific culture that’s inspired all kinds of artists for hundreds of years.

Ravello is the first stop on the excursion, exuding elegance from seemingly every building. As you wander along, your guide will point out hidden gems, some of the most popular landmarks, and everything in between.

Amalfi is next, where you’ll have time not only to enjoy these majestic views over the water, but will relax and enjoy a delicious lunch of salad with a main course. The main course may vary, but it’s usually spaghetti, aubergine, mozzarella, and tomato.

Along your journey, the guide will make stops for photos and videos at Sorrento and Positano, which is perfect if you’d like a taste of these locations before committing to a full tour.

Towns You Will See on the Amalfi Coast

Italy is just a small fraction of the size of the United States, but it’s impressive how much culture and beauty can fit into just the Amalfi Coast, alone. Let’s go over the sites you can expect to see on your Amalfi Coast tour!

1. Positano – This westernmost town is known as being a fishing village with plenty of charm. It’s also known for its trendy fashion, being a celebrity destination, and is no stranger to yacht parties. The pastel-colored villas are beautiful, and we’ve never seen anything quite like it. The 13th-century Santa Maria Assunta church is of particular draw, with its dome sporting majolica tiles and the Byzantine Black Madonna.

2. Amalfi – Couldn’t have guessed this one, huh? Amalfi is so rich in flavor, culture, art, and natural beauty. We hope you enjoy the smell of flowers, because they seem to be cascading everywhere, with the blue sea in the background. The Duomo di Sant’Andrea sits overlooking it all, with a very similar dom to that of the Santa Maria Assunta. Learn all about its centuries-old paper-making traditions as well as Limoncello!

3. Ravello – Ravello feels like you’ve been transported back in time, with its lush gardens surrounding very old, traditional Roman architecture. Churches, monasteries, villas, palaces – it’s packed with 12th-and-13th-century icons.

4. Salerno – Now we’re at the eastern end of the peninsula, which was once the seat of the Fascists during WWII. While the inevitable bombing and invasion left much of it in ruins, you can still see the Castello di Arechi up on a hill, as well as some Roman aqueduct sections, and a beautiful cathedral.

  • Uncover the tranquility of Ravello, a hidden gem known as the City of Music, with its enchanting mountaintop setting and cultural richness

?

Depart from Naples and the cruise port and set off for a day-long adventure like no other. From the scenic Bay of Naples leave on the world-famous coastal road with hairpin bends and travel the winding and jaw-dropping panoramic Amalfi coast drive making your way first to serene Sorrento, approximately 1.5 hours south of Naples' urban intensity. This small group tour keeps the number of guests limited to no more than 20 people to allow for a very special and intimate day.

Arrive at Sorrento and immediately be in awe of her beauty, standing on a terrace that increases rapidly above the sea on one of the most spectacular points of the Campania coast. Wedged on this ledge between the mountains and the Mediterranean, this attractive resort town is a must-do for vacationers in the region. Due to its location and mild climate, Sorrento had been favored as a place of choice by ancient Romans. Spend approximately 1-hour in Sorrento and discover for yourself a most pleasant place to stroll and admire what the locals have gone out of their way to create in a completely safe and relaxed place for tourists. Interjected with lemon and olive groves, this gateway to the Amalfi Coast has an unspoiled old quarter, a lively main shopping street, and the most spectacular cliffside setting.

Continue from Sorrento along the spectacular narrow coastal highway to Positano, an approximately 1-hour drive, located in the middle of the Amalfi coast. Like the legendary Sirens of Li Galli, this scenic locale never fails to seduce her travelers. From the sea, Positano is set in a dramatic vertical panorama of colors with green from the Monti Lattari to white, pink, and yellow Mediterranean houses. The Ancient Romans built numerous, lavish villas on the coast here, the ruins of which can be seen in the vicinity of the Church dell 'Assunta. The majolica tiled dome of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta can be seen from every corner of the town. A Byzantine-inspired Icon of a black Madonna, dating to the 18th century, is conserved inside the church. After the road united the town with Sorrento and Naples, the first tourists reached Positano, but these were no ordinary tourists, but rather an elite group of travelers comprised of intellectuals, artists, and celebrities who, from the early 20th century onwards, elected Positano as their preferred holiday resort. Positano is ideal for shopping so spend approximately 1 hour here and stroll the quaint and ancient streets to explore and find unique treasures and souvenirs.

Next up, you will travel from Positano to Amalfi, the town the coastal drive has been named after. This beautiful and graceful place is known for clusters of white buildings that shine like a pearl in the strand of towns looped along the Amalfi coast. After an approximately 1-hour drive, arrive at one of the more level towns and discover how it rambles up the hillside from the water instead of clinging precariously to it like some of the other famous destinations, making it easier to walk. One of the most historic towns along the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi had a glorious history as a maritime republic whose status joined the ranks of coastal powerhouses like Pisa, Venice, and Genoa. This prestigious town preserves important evidence from the cathedral dedicated to St. Andrew which dominates the homonymous square from the top of a staircase and intricate alleyways of white houses perched on one another. Spend approximately 1 hour here and discover the primary product is enormous orbs of lemons, picked fresh to make limoncello liqueur and used in local dishes as well. The lemon motif shows up in regional ceramics and a citrus scent fills the air as you meander about.

Lastly, and to round out this most extraordinary day, leave Amalfi and travel to Ravello, a short 15-minute drive away. Located between the most precious gems of the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is famous for its tranquil atmosphere and panoramic views. This hidden treasure with villas and gardens has been named the City of Music and is home to the Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo, the striking Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium, and a vibrant cultural scene. With thousands of years of history, this enchanting mountaintop setting has enthralled countless visitors, inspired artists, and fulfilled passion in others. There are still chapters yet to be written along her medieval streets, in garden villas, and along ancient stone paths. After approximately 1-hour here it will be time to return to Naples and your cruise ship.

Don't miss this chance to spend your day leisurely visiting these gems of the Amalfi Coast!

Please note: A new provision law states only small vehicles (with 8 passenger max per vehicle) are permitted to park in Amalfi. Large groups of 9 or more guests will be split into separate vehicles. Due the traffic condition and in order to guarantee the last boarding, the itinerary may undergo variations, reducing the visit to the towns to 3 and guaranteeing short panoramic stops along the route. Feel free to agree with your driver the best itinerary for you!

Capri Island Boat Tour from the port of Naples

Our tour of the Amalfi Coast was fantastic as our boat captain showed us the area and dropped us off at different places for shopping and later for lunch. He always specially positioned the boat for my wife to take extra photographs of hidden little visual treasures along the way. When we said we wanted to swim, he found us an amazing secluded cove and we jumped off the back of the boat. There was a hose to shower off with when we got out and fresh towels waiting. Our captain was in communication with our driver who picked us up to take us to Pompeii where our tour guide was waiting and gave us an intimate look at the site. The entire day was seamless and it was such a relaxing day not worrying about what was next and knowing a team of people were coordinating to give us the best tour.

Andrea is a lifesaver! We booked a boat tour of the Amalfi coast with him, and the day before our tour, I discovered that I booked for the wrong date! The date I actually booked was to be the following day. However, Andrea came to the rescue and was able, within a few short hours, to remedy the situation. He was so kind and understanding. We are so grateful to him because we had a spectacular tour from Naples to Amalfi and Positano. Our skipper even brought some of his mothers homemade Limoncello for us! It was truly a special experience and I’m so grateful to Andrea for making it happen for us. He will be my “go to” for any Italy excursions in the future.

Tour Description

The amalfi coast.

Our VIP Amalfi Coast Private Tour for Cruise Passengers is a journey through some of the most charming towns in Italy. Let us take care of the logistics and just enjoy your day trip to Amalfi and Positano.

The Amalfi Coast is considered one of the most beautiful rivieras in Italy.

It’s famous for its breathtaking panoramas, dramatic cliffs, the deep blue sea merging with the light blue sky, and the lovely towns that decorate the green landscape.

During your VIP Amalfi Coast Private Tour for Cruise Passengers, you will discover the two most important towns in the area: Positano and Amalfi.

Your private driver and your guide will pick you up at the ship. They will have a sign with your name on it, so you can recognize them easily.

Get in the car: your tour is starting!

The first stop, that you will reach in about one hour, will be Positano.

1. Positano

Positano is one of the most picturesque towns in Italy.

It is nestled in the Lattari mountains, overlooking the Mediterranean sea.

Your driver will stop in the highest part of the town, which offers a breathtaking view of the Amalfi Coast and of the Li Galli islands. Then, your guide will lead you through the small alleys and the steep staircases all the way to the seaside.

The pastel-colored houses and the flowers that decorate the streets make Positano a must-see sight and an experience that involves all the senses.

Enjoy your walk through the “pearl” of the Amalfi Coast, and don’t miss the chance to try a Delizia al Limone (traditional lemon pastry) in one of the many pastry shops.

Also, you will have some free time for exploring Positano on your own, and visit the world-famous tailor shops where the colorful “Positano style” has been created.

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its seafood and pasta, but also for its white wines. Enrich your day trip with a tasty lunch break: you will not regret it!

Then, it will be time to get back in the car and continue your exploration of the riviera.

Amalfi will be the second stop of your VIP Amalfi Coast Private Tour for Cruise Passengers. A local saying goes: “The day of judgment, for the Amalfi people who will go to Heaven will be a day like any other”.

But that’s not it: Amalfi is not only gorgeous, it’s also the most important town in the area, and boasts of a glorious history.

Your guide will show you the traces of Amalfi’s greatness, telling you the story of this once powerful maritime republic.

The complex history of Amalfi is summed up by its Cathedral, the symbol of the city. It is one of the most remarkable churches in Italy, and its architecture is influenced by the Gothic, the Norman, and the Arabic tradition.

It also hosts the relics of St. Andrew, one of the Apostles and brother of St. Peter, which the people of Amalfi brought from the Holy Land during the fourth crusade.

The facade of the Cathedral is ornated with shiny mosaics and enriched with arches and a tall belltower.

Let the gorgeous landscapes of the Amalfi Coast inspire you.

Book our VIP Amalfi Coast Private Tour for Cruise Passengers and enjoy a day in this enchanted riviera.

The order of the sights visited might vary to avoid traffic or for logistic reasons.

You MUST bring an ID, a passport or a driver’s license to enter the sights.

This is the price for groups from one to six people. If you have more people in your group, please let us know and we’ll create a customized price.

Pick up at the port will be done only if your ship docks in NAPLES. If your ship is docking elsewhere, please let us know and we’ll create a customized itinerary for you.

Reviews from our Customers

We booked RomeCabs for 3 shore excursion tours: Rome in A Day, Pompeii and Amalfi and Pisa and Florence for our family of 6. We booked based on recommendation from a friend who toured with them the year before. Our drivers were on time, nicely dressed and well mannered, and showed us more in a day than we could have on our own. We couldn't even imagine taking the train from Civitavecchia to Rome and back and try to achieve so much in Rome by ourselves. We felt like VIPs taken around in nice Mercedes vans and having our drivers wait for us to whisk us off to our next attraction. The Vatican ...

We are a family of 5 who booked Rome in A Day Tour (from our apartment in Rome), Countryside tour Pre Cruise to catch our cruise in Civitavecchia, then 2 Shore Excursions from Naples (Pompeii and Amalfi) and Pisa and Florence from Livorno. We are very pleased with all our drivers and with the guides provided for the Vatican and Pompeii. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating to our family. The prices were competitive and in many cases lower than other companies (and much less than the cruise ship offered for the port tours). Next time we come to Italy we will contact RomeCabs ...

December 08th, 2015

Giovanni took us on our Pompeii/ Amalfi coast tour, and we could not have asked for a better driver. He arranged for us to have a tour guide in Pompeii without advanced notice. He was warm, friendly, very informative and went the extra mile to make sure we had excellent service. He provided us with water, treated us to fresh squeezed juice from a street vendor and even gave my children and I souvenirs at the end of our tour. His recommendations for lunch was excellent. He was very personable, and we all felt like we had made a friend by the end of the day. I would highly recommend Giovanni ...

June 24th, 2018

This was a RomeCabs tour of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Positano and Pompeii. Our driver (Giovanni) was punctual, courteous, knowledgeable and delivered our party of 8 back to the port on time. Giovanni reserved a prime table for our group at a very nice restaurant in Positano situated on a bluff overlooking the Mediterranean and he also arranged a great tour guide for our Pompeii visit. He definitely went the "extra mile" to make our group feel very welcomed to his hometown region of Italy. We were very satisfied with your service. ~ Douglas from Chicago

buonasera Napoli,

I gave you the direct links to the ferry companies in post #2. Ferryhopper is a reseller that will add extra fees.

If you want to get your day started earlier, the train route does NOT include Sorrento . You would take Trenitalia to Salerno and take the TravelMar ferry from there. By this routing the earliest you could arrive to Amalfi is 9:15, giving you an hour more to your day.

It depends on what's more important to you, the amount of time you have there or the manner of arriving.

TravelMar ferry schedule here: https://www.travelmar.it/en/timetable-from-march-2024

Trenitalia train schedule here: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

so the train to Salerno is from the same station which is porta something from where the circumvesuvia to Pompeii n Herculaneum is as that station is walkable from my B&B,

yes NLt ferry takes more time ,

i would decide if i want a direct ferry to Amalfi or a train to Salerno n a ferry from there depending on how far is the port from my hotel and if the train frequency is better then would follow that route .

It's only the Amalfi n Ravello , only the transport is to be decided about.

Thanks elstratravels

Oh gr8 Elstratravels ,

i will take a trenitalia from Napoli Centrale to Salerno which is barely 35 mins ride n a ferry from Salerno to Amalfi, i think that's the best option n will follow the same route while returning as this is the most economical option as well.

Just in case the buses from Amalfi to Ravello are too crowded due to the seasonal rush, would the cab cost a bomb?

The taxis are expensive, but there will be other people trying to do the same thing, so you might try to double up with others to split the cost of the taxi.

You can walk back down, it's quite pleasant and the views are amazing.

For more iinfo on the walk, see theses two (or one of many other) web sites:

* scroll down toward the bottom past all the sales messages to get the trail info: https://www.testaccina.com/a-weekend-away-hiking-on-the-amalfi-coast-isobel-lee/

Here's another option: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/italy/campania/ravello-amalfi

I've only ever walked down, I'm not ambitious enough to walk up.

Hello Sandra n elstratravels,

There is a last ferry by travel mar from Amalfi to Salerno Concordia at about 7pm n i guess the last train back to Napoli from Salerno is about 10pm so say i leave for my Day trip by 8.30 am , shall i just cover the cathedral in Amalfi n head to Ravello ? would that give me decent time in Ravello considering that i will be taking the public transport.

It would appear from this thread and your other one that Ravello is where you prefer to spend the majority of your time. If this is correct, then perhaps head there first on your arrival in Amalfi. When you have seen what is of most interest to you, then head down to Amalfi. You will then have a better idea exactly how much time you have to explore Amalfi before the ferry to Salerno. On a day trip it's not possible to see everything, so there will always be the fear of missing out. But that's why I advised you to decide what is important to you.

I gave you a link to the official website to check the ferry timetables in post 5. You were also given a link to the train schedule in post 12. So you should be able to plan your day.

Buonasera Sandra,

Yea that's the correct advice, i will first head to Ravello and try to catch the 7pm ferry from Amalfi to Salerno.

Where Italy cruises sail

<h3>Amalfi Coast</h3> <p>Along the famed <a class="Link" href="https://www.afar.com/travel-guides/italy/amalfi-coast/guide">Amalfi Coast</a>, ships visit Sorrento, overlooking the bay of Naples, and colorful Amalfi, dramatically backed by steep cliffs. Some itineraries also including the strikingly beautiful Positano. Smaller yacht vessels may sail directly to the fancy island of Capri (otherwise there will be a shore excursion, as with the larger ships). Among other shore choices in this region is a visit to ancient Pompeii.</p> <p><b>Sicily</b></p> <p>Italy cruise itineraries often land at several ports on Sicily, and some itineraries circumnavigate the island. Each port has its own allure, including the city scene in Palermo; Syracuse, which showcases ancient attractions from when it was a prominent Greek city; Taormina, with its impressive hilltop location and Greek theater; and Lipari, which has a charming, tiny island ambience. In addition to striking landscapes, attractions include Roman and Greek ancient historic sights and views of Mount Etna, plus filming locations featured in <i>The Godfather</i> movies and in Season 2 of the HBO series <a class="Link" href="https://www.afar.com/magazine/white-lotus-season-2-filming-locations-you-can-visit"><i>The White Lotus</i></a>. If while cruising Sicily your ship ventures to Stromboli, with its famous volcano, it will be from a safe distance—and if you’re lucky, in the dark when you can witness the lava flowing.</p> <h3>Puglia</h3> <p>Increasingly popular on the cruise map are destinations in <a class="Link" href="https://www.afar.com/magazine/the-best-way-to-discover-italys-unspoiled-province">Puglia</a>, a region of olive groves and national parks. Small ships call in the city of Lecce and town of Gallipoli, with their impressive baroque architecture; Taranto, a bustling port city with a history dating back to the Spartans and known for its fresh seafood restaurants; the town of Otranto, where a chapel in the cathedral displays skulls of martyrs from a 15th-century Ottoman siege; and the scenic fishing town of Monopoli, with its beaches and castles.</p> <h3>Adriatic Coast and Sardinia</h3> <p>Small ships also visit Italy’s Adriatic Coast, including the historic Ancona, which has Roman ruins and beaches. Additional islands might appear on an Italy cruise itinerary, too, such as Sardinia, where the wild landscape affords hiking opportunities with views, and you can wander among medieval sights in the historic port city of Cagliari.</p> <h2>The best Italy cruises for every type of traveler</h2>
