The Perfect card for Taj Vouchers : American Express Platinum Travel card review

Updated 15 January 2021

The American Express Platinum Travel Card fits the bill for the frequent domestic traveller and is a worthy companion for a traveller’s wallet. With bonus rewards and Taj Vouchers, you get sweetly rewarded for your normal daily spends. The annual fee pales in comparison to the super savings and makes it your worthy companion.

Note : The post has been updated with current card information.

American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card Overview

From Indigo vouchers to Spicejet vouchers and now to Domestic Travel vouchers, American Express has been changing the way it allows the card users to redeem their earned rewards. With the discontinuation of Spicejet vouchers, Amex has paved the way for its card users to redeem reward travel vouchers for domestic hotels and vouchers on their site. What I like it with Amex is that you can even pay the taxes, fees and surcharges with your reward points.

Who can benefit from Amex Platinum Travel card?

If you can achieve annual spends are in the range of ₹4 lacs per year on this card and if you can make good use of the travel vouchers redeemed from American Express various offered reward points, then this card can help you for a truly rewarding travel experience. For a modest fee, you get a premium travel experience as it lets you earn generous Milestone Bonus Reward points on reaching spending limits along with the regular Membership reward points as well. These bonus reward points are redeemable for Travel vouchers with flexibility to convert points to air miles along with other reward options. As per LBTs calculations, on spends of 4 lacs p.a., you’ll get an awesome ~6.6% return rewards in the first year and a generous ~5.3% from second year onwards.

What is the current Welcome Offer?

The American Express Platinum Travel card is presently offering 5,000 Milestone Bonus Membership Rewards Points (for the first year only) redeemable for Travel Vouchers worth ₹3,500. Check out the table below for the various reward point conversion ratios.

What are Amex Platinum Travel cards’ travel benefits?

The Amex Platinum Travel card offers following benefits, which overshadows the modest fee of ₹3,500+GST in the first year (₹5,000+GST from second year onwards) by miles :

  • Domestic Travel Vouchers: You’ll get ₹5,000 Travel Vouchers (redeemed from 7,500 Spend Milestone Bonus Membership Rewards Points) on spends of ₹1.90 Lacs in a year & additional ₹8,000 Travel Vouchers (redeemed from 10,000 Spend Milestone Bonus Membership Rewards Points) on spends of ₹4 Lacs in a year.
  • Taj Experiences E-Gift Card: You’ll also get Taj Experiences E-Gift Card worth ₹10,000 from Taj, SeleQtions and Vivanta Hotels on spends of ₹4 Lacs in a year. I don’t mind a free night’s stay at the Taj!
  • Airport Lounge Benefits: You get 4 complimentary domestic airport lounge access per year. The benefits are extendable to 2 supplementary card members however the total lounge access cannot exceed 4 visits each year. However when it comes to International lounges, although you do get a Complimentary priority pass worth $99 but the international lounge access itself will be chargeable at $32 per visit for you and your guest as well. I guess as this card is specifically designed with the needs of the Domestic traveller in mind so International Lounge access does not fall in this cards purview.
  • Zero Card Liability : If any unauthorized transactions have taken place on your card, your liability to American Express shall be Nil if you report within 3 working days. If you report the fraud after 3 days, your liability will be a maximum of ₹1,000.
  • 24×7 Personal Concierge : Their customer care have been giving a great service and Emergency Card Replacement, anywhere in the world.

What kind of rewards can I earn?

Along with a decent welcome bonus, you’ll earn 1 Membership Rewards Point earned for every Rs. 50 spent except for spend on Fuel, Insurance, Utilities (which includes Water, Gas and Electricity bill payments), Cash Transactions and EMI conversion. This converts to 0.80% reward rate which by itself is not enough to turn heads. But coupled with various spend based milestone bonus rewards and Taj Vouchers, the overall reward rises nicely to a solid eye catching ~6.6%.

Also, with the American Express Rewards Multiplier Program , you can earn 3x Membership reward points when you shop on your favorite brands like Amazon, Flipkart among a whole lot of other brands pushing the reward rate to a kind of decent ~2.4%.

What is the rewards conversion rate?

Let’s see how the various rewards offered by this travel card and their conversions to Domestic Travel vouchers fare up with each other :

How can I redeem the reward points?

  • Domestic Travel Vouchers : This gives the maximum value for the various reward points offered by this travel card. The updated conversion rate is mentioned in the table above. The Domestic Travel vouchers can be redeemed for booking domestic hotels and domestic air travel through the dedicated American Express Domestic Travel website . What works when redeeming a travel voucher is that you’ll be able to pay the applicable taxes as well.

Note: It may sometimes be more rewarding to transfer miles to your airline of choice or convert points to hotel points which brings us to the next way of redeeming points i.e. Transfer points to Travel partners:

  • Transfer points to Travel Partners : You’ll be able to convert reward points to various Airline miles and Hotel points of your choice. Airline partners include British Airways Avios, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Intermiles, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines Kris Flyer among others with a 2 Membership Reward points = 1 Air Mile conversion rate. The newest addition to the list is Club Vistara with a conversion rate of 3 Membership Reward points = 1 Air Mile. Hotel Partners include Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy.

At times I feel, transferring this is a better way to redeem points however I have not been able to make my mind as yet. There are times, when transferring miles has given better value for money. With Club Vistara joining the list of airline partners having ₹0.33 per reward point conversion rate it might just become my favorite option (after Coronavirus times of course) to redeem miles.

  • Shop with points : During these times of Coronavirus, since Travel is not the first thing that comes in anyone’s mind, you may choose to redeem points for shopping from a wide array of commonly known brands such as Apple, Central, M&S, Flipkart, Big Basket, Myntra. Although for shopping, 1 Membership Rewards Points = ₹0.25 which decent but not as great as when redeemed for domestic travel vouchers.
  • Convert to Shopping Vouchers : You’ll be able to convert points to instant shopping vouchers for various brands. The conversion rate varies and can range from ₹0.25 to ₹0.33 per reward point from brand to brand. Its not the best way to redeem points but if on a particular day one is not in the mood to spend out of pocket, then the option is there!
  • Pay Card charges with points : If travel is off the cards (like it is in these Corona times right now), you can use your collected reward points to pay your card charges at 1 Membership reward points = ₹0.25. Again not the best use of points but in times like the one we are now, the option is there!

Is Amex Travel Platinum suitable for international spends?

With a high foreign exchange markup fee of 3.5% + Service Tax, Amex Travel Platinum is not the best card suited for international spends. When it comes to international spends, Yes First Exclusive and Yes First Preferred credit card offer a foreign exchange markup fee of 1.75% + Service Tax. However, I recently gave up my Yes First credit cards to avoid the Yes Bank mess and I am not sure I even want to go back to Yes Bank products in the future. After Yes Bank, HDFC Bank cards such as Infinia, Diners Black, Regalia, Diners Club Prestige & Premium including Club miles give a good foreign exchange markup of 1.99% + Service tax. Also, with the Global Value program, you get 1% cashback on HDFC bank cards with which you can even gain a little bit of value. But the card which stands out in this range is HDFC Diners Club Premium as it offers 10x Reward points (~13.33% reward rate) on international spends.

Which other cards compete with Amex Travel Platinum?

There is a lot of competition in this range of travel credit cards but Amex Travel Platinum with its exclusive concierge service with ease of redemption options makes it hard to miss! Although, HDFC Regalia, SBI Club Vistara and even SBI Prime Club Vistara charge lower annual fees when compared to Amex Travel Platinum, all fall slightly short of Amex Travel Platinum when it comes to return back reward rate in spite of the higher fees charged by Amex. Moreover, one would need higher annual spends to achieve those reward rates. Although HDFC Regalia has been devalued over the years, but there are many who still are happy with it as it has higher limits of complimentary domestic and international lounge access. But when compared with Amex Travel Plat, they would need annual spends to the tune of ₹8 Lacs to get close to ~5.3% reward rate. Some who regularly travel in Air Vistara and prefer a premium flying experience, are happy with SBI Prime Club Vistara although they would need annual spends to the tune of ₹8 Lacs to get close to ~6.13% reward rate. Then there are some who are happy with miles that never expire offered by CitiPremier Miles card and 32 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year doesn’t disappoint either. As such there is no annual spend requirement in CitiPremier Miles and many are happy for using it to mint accelerated miles (~4.5% reward rate) for airline and hotel bookings. With 10x reward points on international spends, HDFC Diners Premium provides huge value for those who regularly spend internationally. Ultimately, these cards each offer a very different set of perks that will appeal to different people. Those looking for higher reward rate until annual spends of ₹4 Lacs with Taj vouchers and other travel vouchers as added perks will prefer Amex Travel Platinum, while Vistara frequent flyers will do better with SBI Club Vistara card.

What’s not so good with Amex Travel Platinum credit card?

We know of some close friends who had shifted from Citi PremierMiles to Amex Travel Platinum as it didn’t have the lounge visit restriction for add-on card members but although the complimentary domestic lounge access is extendable to 2 supplementary card members (which was good for them), the complimentary access is limited to 4 visits in a year which in effect means families get restricted for its usage perhaps only once per year. That is a mood kill for some like us who would like to travel a little more often than once a year. For families like us who would like to travel a bit more frequently, would have to then rely on other debit cards or perhaps on super premium credit cards with better perks like HDFC Diners Club Black or HDFC Infinia Card. Also, no international lounge access along with high foreign markup fee restricts its usage abroad. Then what could be a deterrent for some would be the annual fees as not all would like to pay it in spite of the awesome rewards and vouchers. It does make complete sense to go for Amex Travel Platinum but for us it is HDFC Infinia Card which does the trick. Amex Travel Platinum is definitely not for someone looking for an abundance of luxury benefits as cards providing those will charge higher annual fees or a higher relationship value with the bank as is the case with HDFC Infinia.

Bottom Line

Despite the competition, Amex Travel Platinum suits the domestic frequent traveller and the Taj vouchers is like an icing on the cake for families to enjoy! If your annual spends are in the range of around ₹4 lacs, you will be able to maximize the perks offered. If one can look past the annual fee, the rewards are right there to enjoy!

The best ways to fly to India with points and miles

Katie Genter

India is a top destination for many travelers. You can occasionally find flight deals to India, especially if you are patient and have flexible travel dates. If you find a good flight deal, you may want to use a credit card travel portal to book your flights .

Otherwise, you may want to redeem points and miles for flights to India . This guide will discuss some of the top airline loyalty programs to use when booking award flights between the U.S. and India.

Whether you are booking paid flights or award flights, remember to consider booking positioning flights in the U.S. and India. Doing so may unlock more award options or better pricing. Let's get started.

ANA Mileage Club

If you're looking to book a round-trip award, booking with ANA Mileage Club may be a good option. ANA is a member of the Star Alliance but also partners with some airlines outside Star Alliance, including Etihad Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

You can redeem ANA miles to fly round-trip between North America and Asia (which includes India) at the following rates:

  • Economy : 55,000 to 70,000 miles on ANA-operated flights; 80,000 miles on partners.
  • Premium economy : 84,000 to 99,000 miles on ANA-operated flights; not available on partners.
  • Business : 100,000 to 115,000 miles on ANA-operated flights; 136,000 miles on partners.
  • First : 195,000 to 210,000 miles on ANA-operated flights; 240,000 miles on partners.

You'll still pay these rates even if you fly one-way. So you'll only want to consider ANA Mileage Club if you plan to book a round-trip award.

For example, here's an economy round-trip award operated by Singapore Airlines that you can book for 80,000 ANA miles plus 84.30 Singapore Dollars (about $64):

american express travel card india

However, taxes and fees are a lot higher on ANA-operated awards. Here's a premium economy round-trip award operated by ANA that you can book for 94,000 ANA miles plus 817.90 Singapore dollars (about $618):

american express travel card india

If you need to earn ANA miles to book your award, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio or Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio (with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred).

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is another option for flights between the U.S. and India.

You can redeem for flights on Virgin Atlantic, although the taxes and fees are often too high for this to make sense. For example, consider the following off-peak awards from New York to Mumbai via London:

american express travel card india

The award costs jump higher for Virgin Atlantic-operated awards on peak dates, though. Combined with the high taxes and fees, these awards won't appeal to most travelers.

american express travel card india

You can also redeem Virgin points according to off-peak and peak zone-based charts for long-haul flights operated by Air France and KLM. Here's the pricing you should see for one-way awards between the U.S. and India operated by Air France or KLM:

  • Economy : 28,000 points off-peak to/from eastern U.S., 38,000 points peak to/from eastern U.S., 31,000 points off-peak to/from central or western U.S. and 41,000 points peak to/from central or western U.S.
  • Premium economy (only on Air France): 56,000 points off-peak to/from the eastern U.S., 76,000 points peak to/from the eastern U.S., 62,000 points off-peak to/from central or western U.S. and 72,000 points peak to/from central or western U.S.
  • Business : 110,000 points off-peak to/from eastern U.S., 120,000 points peak to/from eastern U.S., 122,500 points off-peak to/from central or western U.S. and 132,500 points peak to/from central or western U.S.

But in practice, the rates you'll see for awards operated by Air France and KLM on the Flying Club website may not match the award chart rates. For example, these awards operated by Air France and KLM cost 27,000 points (1,000 points less than we'd expect).

american express travel card india

If you want to earn Virgin points , you can leverage the following transferable currencies:

  • American Express Membership Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio (if you have the Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ) or the Citi Prestige® Card , which is no longer open to new applicants).
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Bilt Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio (with 5,000 bonus points for every 60,000 points transferred).
  • Capital One miles at a 1:1 ratio (to Virgin Red ).

The information for the Citi Prestige has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Flying Blue

The Flying Blue program is another option for award flights between the U.S. and India. One-way awards between the U.S. and India start at 35,000 miles in economy, 65,000 miles in premium economy and 95,000 miles in business.

american express travel card india

For example, we could book the one-way KLM-operated economy award that costs 27,000 Virgin points plus $219 (see the previous section) for 35,000 Flying Blue miles plus $125.

american express travel card india

Finding business class awards at the starting rate of 95,000 miles can be challenging. But you can easily check award pricing by cabin around your desired travel dates by looking at the bar above the results. Unfortunately, as you'll see in the one-way business class award example below, the taxes and fees are rather high on business class awards.

american express travel card india

If you want to earn Flying Blue miles , you can transfer any of the following transferable currencies:

  • Capital One miles at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio (if you have the Citi Premier Card or the Citi Prestige Card ).
  • Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio (with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred).
  • Bilt Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio to either Air France or KLM (both of which use Flying Blue as their loyalty program).

Air Canada Aeroplan

american express travel card india

Air Canada Aeroplan award prices follow region-based award charts . The U.S. is in the North America region and India is in the Atlantic region. However, most one-way awards between the U.S. and India have a distance of 6,001 to 8,000 miles and hence are priced as follows:

  • Economy : 55,000 to 80,000 points for Air Canada-operated flights; 55,000 points for partner-operated flights.
  • Premium economy : 70,000 to 100,000 points for Air Canada-operated flights; not offered on partner-operated flights.
  • Business : 85,000 to 200,000 points for Air Canada-operated flights; 90,000 points for partner-operated flights.
  • First : 120,000 to 225,000 points on Air Canada-operated flights; 130,000 points on partner-operated flights.

However, if you combine Air Canada-operated flights with flights operated by partner airlines, you may see different pricing.

Aeroplan's rates are higher than what you'll find with other programs, especially once you consider the partner booking fee.

But, if you want to add in a stopover or have inflexible travel dates, you may find that the Aeroplan program is best for your trip to India. I had little trouble finding partner awards pricing as expected from major cities in the U.S. to major cities in India.

If you need to earn Aeroplan points for an award, you could use the Aeroplan® Credit Card . However, if you need points more urgently, you could leverage the following transferable currencies:

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles can be a good way to book Star Alliance awards between the U.S. and India. You can book round-trip promotional awards on Turkish Airlines or its partners between the U.S. and India at the following rates:

  • Economy : 68,000 miles.
  • Business : 105,000 miles.
  • First : 154,000 miles.

You can also book a one-way promotional award for half the cost in miles of a round-trip award. There's plenty of economy award availability on Turkish Airlines-operated flights from the U.S. to India for 34,000 miles plus $128.80 one-way.

american express travel card india

You can also find some availability on Star Alliance partners. For example, here's a one-way business class award on an Air India-operated flight from New York to Delhi for 52,500 miles plus $277.90.

american express travel card india

If you want to earn Turkish miles to book an award, you can transfer Capital One miles at a 1:1 ratio, Citi ThankYou Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio (if you have the Citi Premier Card or the Citi Prestige Card ), Bilt Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio and Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio (with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred).

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca LifeMiles is another option you could use if you want to fly Star Alliance airlines between the U.S. and India.

You'll usually find one-way Star Alliance awards between the U.S. and India for 47,000 miles in economy, 90,000 miles in business and 120,000 miles in first.

american express travel card india

But one interesting part of the Avianca LifeMiles program is how it prices mixed cabin awards. For example, you could pay just 3,330 miles more to fly Air India business class instead of economy class from Hong Kong to Delhi on the following award.

american express travel card india

If you want to earn Avianca LifeMiles, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio, Capital One miles at a 1:1 ratio, Citi ThankYou Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio (if you have the Citi Premier Card or the Citi Prestige Card ) and Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio.

United MileagePlus

United MileagePlus offers reasonably priced economy awards between the U.S. and India on most dates. On most dates, you'll find one-way economy awards for 46,800 miles plus modest taxes and fees. For example, here's a calendar view of economy awards from Austin, Texas, to Delhi:

american express travel card india

You'll likely end up on Air India if you're looking for the least-expensive one-stop routing:

american express travel card india

But keep an eye out for other Star Alliance carriers, such as LOT Polish:

american express travel card india

United MileagePlus awards between the U.S. and India are often expensive in premium cabins. So unless you have a lot of United miles , you'll likely want to utilize other programs if you want to fly in premium cabins. Here's an example of some of the least expensive business and first class awards I found between New York and Delhi:

american express travel card india

If you want to earn United miles , you have multiple options. For example, you can use a United credit card or transfer rewards from Chase Ultimate Rewards at a 1:1 ratio, Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1.1 ratio (with 5,500 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred) and Bilt Rewards at a 1:1 ratio.

Alaska Mileage Plan

Alaska Mileage Plan provides some nice options between the U.S. and India. Based on Alaska's new simplified award chart , you'd expect to see one-way awards starting at the following rates between the U.S. and India:

  • Economy : 42,500 miles
  • Premium economy : 55,000 miles.
  • Business : 65,000 miles.
  • First : 80,000 miles.

But in practice, you may find less-expensive awards when you search on Alaska's website. For example, here's a Japan Airlines-operated economy award from Seattle to Bangalore for 35,000 miles plus $31.

american express travel card india

And here's a Japan Airlines-operated business award from New York to Delhi for 60,000 miles plus $30.

american express travel card india

Alaska Mileage Plan may be very appealing if you want to build a stopover into your one-way award. For example, you can book the same Japan Airlines itinerary shown above with about a week stopover in Tokyo for the same number of miles and just slightly higher taxes and fees.

american express travel card india

The primary downside of redeeming Alaska miles is the difficulty you may face in earning Alaska miles . That said, you can earn miles through Alaska credit cards , the Alaska Mileage Plan shopping portal and by transferring rewards from Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1 ratio (with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred).

American AAdvantage

Finally, American Airlines AAdvantage provides some good options between the U.S. and India. You can fly one-way awards that involve American's partners between the U.S. and India at the following rates:

  • Economy : 40,000 miles.
  • Premium economy : 62,500 miles.
  • Business : 70,000 miles.
  • First : 115,000 miles.

You'll usually see reasonable taxes and fees if you avoid British Airways-operated flights. Also, American's large network within the U.S. makes it easy to connect within the U.S. at the start or end of your award.

It's relatively easy to find economy awards involving American's partners for 40,000 miles each way. For example, here's a one-way economy award on Qatar Airways-operated flights from Los Angeles to Bengaluru for 40,000 miles plus $41.80:

american express travel card india

And here's a one-way business class award on Finnair-operated flights from Dallas to Mumbai for 70,000 miles plus $12.30:

american express travel card india

The biggest downside of American Airlines AAdvantage awards is that it can be difficult to earn American miles . But you can earn miles through American Airlines credit cards , Bask Bank and the AAdvantage shopping portal . Plus, you can transfer rewards to AAdvantage from Bilt Rewards at a 1:1 ratio and Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1 ratio.

Related: Maximizing redemptions with American Airlines AAdvantage

Bottom line

This guide discussed various ways to redeem points and miles for flights to India. The best program for you will depend on various factors, including award availability, what points and miles you currently have and how you want to fly.

Booking flights is just the start of your trip planning. Luckily, you can also redeem hotel points in India — and there are some excellent properties to consider. For example, Hyatt's Alila Fort Bishangarh near Jaipur is spectacular. You can stay at the world's only Category 1 Park Hyatt in Chennai . And the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Agra offers views of the Taj Mahal from its roof-top infinity pool.

If you don't want to plan what to do in India once you book your flights, Elsewhere (owned by TPG's sister brand, Lonely Planet) may be able to plan the perfect trip for you.

American Express Platinum Travel: One of the best Travel Credit Cards in India

March 18, 2023 by Ajay 8 Comments

a credit card with a picture of a man

Unlike other card-issuers, who provide enhanced rewards on booking travel with your “travel credit cards”, American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card focuses on providing rewards which enable you to experience travel.

On an ongoing basis, the Card provides you with 1 Membership Reward (MR) point for every INR 50 spent on the Card. There are exceptions, though, such as spending on fuel, insurance, and utilities, which do not earn any MR.

If you shop via the Rewards Multiplier portal , Amex offers additional points. In this case, the points rewarded can go up to three times the usual points received for using the Card.

Amex Platinum Travel Credit Card does have more exciting offers like milestone benefits, which can be easily achieved and provide bumper rewards. When you spend INR 1.9 Lacs on the Card in a membership year, you are automatically credited with 7,500 threshold MR bonus points.

a screenshot of a cell phone

Additionally, when you spend a further INR 2.1 Lacs on the Card (a total of INR 4 Lacs in a membership year), you are credited an additional 10,000 threshold MR points and receive a Taj Hotels Gift Voucher worth INR 10,000.

a screenshot of a cell phone

You can also call on the American Express Helpline or use the chat function to get yourself a further milestone bonus of 7,500 MR points on spending INR 1.9 Lac per annum and 15,000 MR points on completing spends worth INR 4 Lacs in a year on the Card.

a screenshot of a travel bonus

Summing things up, on spending INR 4 Lacs in a membership year, you will then earn 8,000 Membership Reward points (calculated basis of 100% of the amount spent by you on eligible categories throughout the entire year) and 40,000 Membership Reward points as a bonus, totalling up to 48,000 Membership Reward points. When you redeem these MR points for Taj Vouchers, you get INR 24,000 worth of vouchers (at the redemption value of INR 0.5 per MR converted).

This is over and above INR 10,000 worth of Taj Vouchers, which you receive on spending INR 4 Lacs anyway. So, you get INR 34,000 worth of value from using this Card in a year (assuming you hit both spending milestones). Those INR 34,000 vouchers are usually good for two nights at most Taj properties across India.

But even if you don’t want to use the MR points for Taj vouchers, you can convert them into Marriott Bonvoy points at 100:100 conversion or 1000:900 conversion to Hilton Honors points and use them for hotel stays. Alternatively, you can transfer them to the frequent-flyer program of leading airlines with Asia Miles, Club Vistara, British Airways Executive Club, Emirates skywards, Etihad Guest, Qatar Privilege Club, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

A recent change has made spending on this Card even more beneficial. Your Membership Rewards points no longer expire, which means you can accumulate even more MR points and then use them for a more extensive travel plan rather than using them on an annual basis. Not just this, the Card also has options towards spending these MR on booking air tickets using the Amex Travel website or converting them into Flipkart vouchers to purchase goods with them.

Amex also offers eight complimentary domestic airport lounge visits per year (limited to two complimentary visits per quarter) on this Card across nine cities, making it worthwhile for those who occasionally travel by helping their pre-flight experience.

In a nutshell, the Amex Platinum Travel Credit Card gets you benefits worth over INR 30,000 rewards every year, all of which are oriented towards travel. You can use the rewards for a family trip or getaways with friends every year or accumulate the rewards to plan one long trip every few years.

The American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card is available for INR 3,500 fee for the first year, and you get an additional 10,000 bonus MR points (on spending INR 15,000 on the Card within 90 days). Alternatively, you can get the Card through the Member Get Member programme . You get it free for the first year and a bonus of 2,000 MR points (on spending INR 5,000 on the Card within 90 days).

@Ajay I am planning to apply using your referral link in the ongoing MGM. Could you please clarify the below?

1) The Amex website seems to suggest that the RPs can be redeemed only for Flipkart or ATO at a value of 30p/point. Is this the case? I don’t see a reference to other redemption options that you have listed. 2) I was under the impression the points could be used in the 18k and 24k catalog. Is that the case or not? 3) I already have a MRCC. If I get a 2nd Amex, can the points earned on both be combined and redeemed?

Thanks very much for your time and efforts.

The lounge access isn’t worth it. They won’t let you into their Delhi Lounge. Apparently it’s only reserved for Platinum card holders, and Plat Travel doesn’t count.

@Nate, nowhere did we indicate that access is for the Amex Lounge. Amex publishes a list of applicable lounges for access for this card.

@Ajay Just to add, Amex offered me LTF MRCC Gold(which I was already holding) till I continue holding the Platinum Travel CC. Only 1 AF to be paid is a good thing!

Could please you expand on how to go about this? Thanks

“You can also call on the American Express Helpline or use the chat function to get yourself a further milestone bonus of 7,500 MR points on spending INR 1.9 Lac per annum and 15,000 MR points on completing spends worth INR 4 Lacs in a year on the Card.”

@David Rajan, what specific insight do you need? You just call Amex, ask them to review and see if any more points need to be added because you achieved the milestone.

AmEx does not post these bonus points without customer making the request. This helps AmEx profiteer from customers who might miss calling AmEx thinking this earning should be posted automatically / proactively by AmEx.

This card is indeed an amazing card if one is able to spend around 3.5 to 4 lakhs annually in a year.

And also if ones to redeem on Taj / Mariott, this probably gives the best value.

I think the greatest advantage AmEx has over other cards, is that the MR points usually don’t expire.

Even for the MRCC cards (unless one goes for the non FTO option) the points don’t expire.

Usually for other cards, the points have a validity for 3 years.

So this is where AmEx shines.

Just hoping that they keep trying to increase the ambit of card acceptance throughout the country.

The Best Credit Cards For a Trip To India

Bio photo for Jason Steele

Few years ago, I was extremely excited to take my first trip to India, a country that I’ve always been fascinated by.

Unfortunately, India is one of the furthest countries from the United States, and it’s always going to be more expensive to fly there than to most other destinations.

But once you arrive in India, you’ll find it to be one of the most affordable places you can go.

For example, it’s generally pretty easy to find a car, a driver, and a tour guide for about $100 a day in India’s capital of New Delhi.

And fortunately, you can earn points and miles from your credit card that you can use for flights to India and even hotels .

Finding the Right Credit Card for a Trip to India

Most of the time, it makes sense to earn points in a credit card rewards program that allows transfers to miles with multiple airlines.

Here are the top travel rewards credit cards that you can use for your trip to India :

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The is a premium rewards card that usually offers an attractive welcome bonus. Additionally, the rewards program is suitable for those who travel and dine out regularly.

Points are earned in the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, which allows you to transfer points to miles with different airline partners and hotel programs .

For example, you can transfer your points to United, which offers round-trip awards to India for 85,000 miles in economy and 140,000 - 160,000 miles in business, depending on if the intercontinental flight is operated by United.

United is part of the Star Alliance , which means that you can redeem your miles for flights from other carriers like Lufthansa, Turkish, and Air Canada.

And since Air India is also a member of the Star Alliance, you can add on flights to smaller cities in India, not just New Delhi or Mumbai.

You could also transfer the points to the Flying Blue program , which is the one for Air France and KLM .

Flying Blue also partners with Delta, and offers round-trip economy awards to India for 80,000 miles .

However, their business class awards are a more unreasonable 200,000 miles round-trip. This card has a $95 annual fee .

Read Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Editor's Review

Citi / AAdvantage ® Platinum Select ® World Elite MasterCard ®

This card offers new applicants a very generous welcome bonus.

You earn double miles on all American Airlines flights and one mile per dollar spent elsewhere.

Other benefits include a free checked bag, priority boarding, and discounts on in-flight food and beverages .

Award flights from the 48 contiguous states to India on American Airlines are 80,000 miles round-trip in economy class and 140,000 miles round-trip in business class.

American is partnered with several different carriers that serve India and are part of the OneWorld Alliance including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qatar, and Sri Lankan.

In addition, it also partners with Jet Airways, and Indian carrier that serves India from Toronto via Amsterdam.

This card has a $99 annual fee that’s waived the first year, and no foreign transaction fees .

Read Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard Editor's Review

Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card

This card offer a great way to earn Membership Rewards points , which can be transferred to miles with 17 different airlines.

But what’s exceptional about this card is that It features 3x points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 spent each calendar year), 2x points at US gas stations, and 1x elsewhere .

In addition, you also get a 50% points bonus each billing period that you make 30 or more transactions, which allows you earn 4.5x, 3x and 1.5x respectively.

One way to use these points for an award flight to India is to transfer them to ANA, which requires the least amount of points for this trip.

As a Star Alliance member, you can redeem ANA points for flights operated by Air India and numerous other carriers.

Another Membership Rewards transfer partner is Air France/KLM’s Flying Blue program.

There’s a $95 annual fee for this card, but it does have a 2.7% foreign transaction fees .

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card from Bank of America

This card also offers a generous welcome bonus. It also offers 3x miles for all Alaska Airlines purchases, and 1 mile per dollar spent elsewhere.

But I’m sure that you’re wondering if Alaska Airlines even flies to India, right?

They don’t, but you can redeem your miles to fly there with several of their partners . Round-trip award flights to India on Air France or KLM are 80,000 miles in economy or 140,000 miles in business class.

Another option is Cathay Pacific flights, which require a steep 100,000 miles in economy but are a bargain at 125,000 miles for business class.

Finally, you could consider Emirates, which would be 85,000 in economy or 165,000 miles in business class. There’s a $75 annual fee for this card, and no foreign transaction fees .

What Credit Cards to Use in India

Mumbai Maharashtra

Once you reach India, you will still want to have the right credit card for your purchases.

Nearly all merchants in India that accept credit cards accept Visa and MasterCard, and most accept American Express. The Discover card is gaining acceptance, and can be used anywhere you see the Diner’s Club International logo.

Like any trip outside of the United States, you’ll want to use a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees.

The only card mentioned here that has foreign transaction fees is the American Express Everyday Preferred, which imposes a 2.7% fee on all charges processed outside of the United States.

Jammu and Kashmir state, India

If you are renting a car, be very careful which card you use, as many, such as American Express cards exclude India from their coverage.

Thankfully, Chase and Citi offer worldwide coverage including India, but you should still ask for a coverage letter that you can show to the rental car company, so it won’t force you to buy additional coverage.

Nevertheless, India is still very much a traditional society, and you will still find many vendors that don’t accept credit cards or those who simply prefer cash.

You should never use your credit card to access cash from an ATM , as it will likely be subject to large cash advance fees , and a very high cash advance interest rate . In addition, interest will alway be incurred on cash advances. Unlike new purchases, there is no grace period for these transactions.

Instead, you should take always have an ATM card with you to access cash.

An ATM card that works in the United States will work at nearly any ATM machine in India.

You can also bring US Dollars with you for exchange , but you are unlikely to receive as good of an exchange rate as you would with your debit card or credit card.

Bottom line

With a population of over four times the United States, India is an amazingly diverse and exciting destination.

Despite the great distances involved, visiting India is well worth the trip.

By using the right credit cards to earn travel rewards, you can visit India sooner than you may have thought, and for a lot less money.

Amex Platinum Charge Card Upgrade Offer [135K Points]

Amex Platinum Charge Card Upgrade Offer

American Express India is aggressive in promoting Metal card ever since 2019 as they sent out the upgrade offer to “almost” all existing Amex Cardmembers with 125K points as welcome bonus, instead of the usual 100K points.

After that Amex was only sending upgrade offers in the range of 100K-110K MR points. But now in Jan 2024 they’ve come up with the best ever upgrade for Amex Plat Charge Card in this decade: 135,000 Amex MR points. Here are the details along with the previous best offer we saw in 2019.

135K Upgrade Offer (Jan, Feb 2024)

  • Joining Fee: Rs.60,000+GST = Rs.70,800
  • Welcome Offer: Get 1,00,000 Membership Rewards® points on upgrading to the Platinum Card & upon spending Rs. 50,000 on the Card in first 60 days of Card membership.  Additionally, as part of this offer, an additional 35,000 Bonus Membership Rewards ®  points will be credited to your Card Account within 120 days from the successful processing of Card application and fulfilment of requisite criteria. So total 135,000 MR points.
  • Offer valid from 1 January 2024 – 31 January 2024 (extended through Feb 2024).

Note that this can be availed only if you’ve received the targeted offer on your existing American Express Credit Card.

If I have to compare it with the previous offer, it seems they’ve removed the “renewal” benefit, which anyway isn’t a big deal as you can see below.

125K Upgrade Offer (Previous best)

Amex upgrade offer 125K points

  • Welcome Offer: Get 1,25,000 Membership Rewards® points on upgrading to the Platinum Card & upon spending Rs. 90,000 on the Card in first 3 months of Card membership. (100K regular points + 25K points extra)
  • Renewal offer: Rs.20,000 worth Taj Vouchers on first year renewal.

This maynot be the best upgrade offer as few of them were able to grab the metal card for 35K+GST joining fee (by swapping jet card) and lock in that low fee for life – which is amazing but that may not return anytime soon.

Should you go for it?

For first year, its an outstanding offer and if 50% or even 30% bonus on Marriott points transfer offer shows up this year too, you would be lucky as you could get an amazing value when you redeem the points with Marriott Hotels or by further transferring to United Mileage Plus .

If you prefer simpler redemptions, you may as well go for Taj/Amazon Vouchers or others via Amex Gold Collection (24K or 18K) as long as either Gold charge (or) MRCC is in the same pool of points as they can be linked together.

That aside, getting value on regular spend or via benefits that comes with the card demands a lifestyle of it’s own. Do have a look at the detailed review of Amex Platinum Charge Card (updated for 2024) for more on that.

Looks like a targeted offer! However I’m sure they’ll be happy to offer 125,000 points for anyone upgrading to the Platinum.

american express travel card india

I didnt get the offer, but when I asked for upgrade over the call, there manager did mentioned on her own to give 25 k extra joining points

american express travel card india

Hi Sid, seems you saw my comments and posted this article 😉 and you might have received invite too !

I’m also thinking if amex can give the 50% Marriott conversion this year as well.. but Platinum points won’t get expired right.. so even if we get the offer sometime next year too.. it would be great offer I’m thinking 🙂

and any expiry on Marriot points ?

american express travel card india

Actually posted the article and saw the comment 🙂

– Marriott points expire after 24 months of no account activity. To keep them, you just need to earn or redeem points or stay in a Marriott hotel

american express travel card india

Is this targeted ? & If yes, what card(s) triggered the upgrade ?

I believe, most of Plat Travel cards got the upgrade this morning 🙂

american express travel card india

Gold card in my case

american express travel card india

american express travel card india

I also got this offer , I am holder of platinum travel, MRCC and gold card . It seems who has completed milestone in platinum travel may be getting this , but like someone commented even if one has smart earn and MrCC they also getting so not sure what is the criteria of getting this offer ?

american express travel card india

Soon we can expect a Vistara card replacing Jet Amex card

you have credible info on this ?

american express travel card india

What’s your source.

american express travel card india

I called them up and they say no such offers we have. Can you please connect me to some one from American Express to validate this

Unless you got a mail, Amex wont be able to help you. Your best bet is to get 110K points via online referral.

american express travel card india

There is something called One Card that is coming soon. Metal based card and they claim its free. The Founder has mocked on twitter and gone ahead and said its time to stop paying 60K for metal card. Apparently once it is launched finer details would be known…

american express travel card india

Even I received the same offer and I upgraded my card. The best way to get back that 70800 is by converting 125000 points to Amazon vouchers. Redeem those points in the 18-carat gold section and for every 18000 points redemption, you will receive 8000 worth Amazon vouchers.

Its an option, but not the best option to burn 125K points.

@Reuben, Those 125K points could have given you a free return biz class trip to Japan on JAL . Certainly not the best way to utilize the points.

american express travel card india

Hi Siddharth, thanks for sharing this article. Regular use of your website and appreciate your feedback. So I am guessing this offer is not applicable for new joinees? I currently use Axis Vistara Infinite and really like the value I get out of that. My secondary card is HDFC Regalia, and Regalia pales in comparison to total points earning potential of the VIstara infinite and the Amex platinum. So I am thinking of applying for the platinum because the additional benefits definitely outweigh the initial cost I reckon.

american express travel card india

do they credit 100k points on crossing 90k spends and then25k points later? Or full 125k should have been posted together ?

american express travel card india

100K points will be credited after spending of 90K in 3 months time. 25K will be credited in 90 days.

Thank you… i have also asked Customer care to look into it

Submitted upgrade form on 16 JAN, recieved call from Amex platinum team that card is going to upgraded, just some email acknowledgement they took.

They gave me option to choose from 125k MR points or 60K Taj vouchers, I obviously choose 125K points over Taj vouchers.

Just wondering how long it takes to get the metal card from the time we confirm amex team to process it !

Less than a week.

Hi Guys, Can somebody pls confirm if this is only applicable for upgrades or fresh applications as well?

american express travel card india

Any chance to get this card as LTF?

american express travel card india

I took the upgrade in Jan 2023, when 1.25L points were offered, but was eventually awarded 1.35L points. Got 1L + 25K + 10K points.

Nice. Was it automatic or after a request they gave the remaining 10k points?

It was automatic, I wasn’t even expecting the additional 10K.

That’s so nice of Amex.

american express travel card india

Can we redeem the 135000 points for the 24/18 karat gold collection. Because called amex to check if that was an option and they said no.

You can, as long as you’ve a Gold Charge or MRCC linked to the Plat Charge account as already mentioned.

If not, nothing should stop you from getting one to enjoy the Gold Collection.

AMEX is still really unusable outside the Metro cities. Even then, it is still difficult to find acceptance outside the hospitality industry and especially among SMEs and other providers like vehicle dealers and travel agents. Even worse is that then a lot many online services including school/college, government, small e-commerce and even some insurance websites do not accept AMEX cards!

Forget about using it once you exit the Metros where acceptance of AMEX is the exception rather than the norm. I live in Kerala and use my two AMEX cards only on AMEX Gyftr. Believe me, I’ve tried, but even in big cities like Kochi, you can count the (non-hospitality) places that accept AMEX on your fingers. Hell, even huge brands like LuLu do not accept them! (Pothys does, but they are very reluctant). Funnily enough, nearly everyone still thinks it is a “foreign card”. “Sir, do you any card that was issued in India?” LOL.

AMEX has to really work on their acceptance levels if they want to get any kind of market share in India. If it were accepted at even 80% of the places I would chuck all my other cards (except one VISA) and get only an AMEX Plat for all my transactions.

Amex Merchant business plays the premium game and yes, can be seen only with high margin businesses for obvious reasons.

You’re all right, except that I wish to say that it has relatively lot better acceptance when it comes to online.

I think it can never be a primary card, and for the same reason they prefer to issue cards to those who already hold some other credit card.

Hi, any idea how long do they take to process the upgrade offer?

I had sent in my request 2 days back, just received an acknowledgement mail from them on the day of upgrade, nothing since then

Nevermind, came today. So the answer is 2 days.

american express travel card india

The offer is extended to end of Feb 2024. Just got mail from Amex informing about the extension.

american express travel card india

Me too received upgrade offer, last time it got rejected due to income issue 25lakhs. last time too it was upgrade through email text offered on travel plat and they had sent a link to apply and then update the info along with income. however this time they have sent on email like a advert and not separate link but just a upgrade radio button. Am bit unsure to upgrade now as i have still left with 59k to reach 4lakhs milestone 2nd time. I also met their 3lakhs spend offer for 12k Taj voucher when i called care they said it due to be issued in July 2024… Too much time. And by 31st March i reach 4 lks then i get additional 25k MR and then i have to think to upgrade it will see if it asks again income i would pass it. let us see

Took the offer of 135K points. They credited all 135K points in one go.

american express travel card india

Hi Amitabh. Firstly, congratulations on the offer, and getting the points in one shot! Secondly, when were the points credited? On card approval? Issuance? First usage? Or the same day after making a total of 50k spend?
