It feels reminiscent of our earlier records in terms of style; there’s a real acoustic rawness to the sound. However, the songwriting and performances are naturally tied to the humans we are right now, with all the branches of experience hanging in there. We couldn’t be more excited to share this music. It’s been an incredible experience writing and recording these songs together.”

“This song is about the dance between discovery and loss, the essence of love’s journey—filled with so many moments of both finding and losing.

Playing this track together is incredibly enjoyable, mostly because we sing in harmony throughout the entire song. We’ve done a lot of singing in unison on the last couple of records, but singing in harmony is a special experience; there’s something about the familial tone of our voices blending together a third apart that has a real magic for us. The feel of the song also reminds us of the songs our parents played us… Losing You reminds us of long road trips up the east coast of Australia, where we’d sing in the back of the car to mum and dads favourite tunes from the 60’s and 70’s.

Inspired by the fluidity of the dance between love and loss, our vision for the accompanying video was to mirror this dynamic through movement. We wanted to evoke the sensation of being consumed by shadows and darkness, only to emerge into the light, ultimately rediscovering ourselves once again.”

It’s this language of music that forms the basis of Angus and Julia’s new album, ‘Cape Forestier’ – a collection of heartfelt songs that share the sound of their extraordinary journey together.

Together as musicians, producers, and songwriters, Angus and Julia Stone form two halves of a musical act whose words and sounds reveal a pure and genuine love for music and a talent for telling beautiful stories. Stories that have taken them all over the world and back again. But where is it that they come back to?

“Home has become something deeper than a place. Maybe because of all the moving … or maybe because of all the music … it just feels like when we’re creating, we’re home,” Julia ponders. “There are places I love to be, to visit, people I love to see and connect with, but I’m most at peace writing and in the studio … and I love being in that space with Angus. We’ve been through so much together and when we’re writing, we’re speaking the same language.”

Music has continued to play an essential role in their lives over the years, as they’ve established a prominent career in the international music world. From their origins in childhood, then moving to London just out of school with their first record deal, to two years in LA working with the ineffable Rick Rubin, to Paris, Berlin, Egypt, and New York, to building a studio in the hinterlands of NSW. Throughout their journey, the duo have consistently regarded their music as a personal discovery and outlet for their thoughts and observations.

This album, ‘Cape Forestier,’ is like a storybook from the hearts and minds of Angus and Julia Stone – reminiscent of their earlier records, with each song revealing itself as a differe nt page. The songs move from love stories like ‘My Little Anchor’ or the soaring ‘Somehow,’ a burning tale of unrequited love, to songs like ‘Down to The Sea’ that explore a unique view of society and what goes on around us. Together, the tracks on ‘Cape Forestier’ are strikingly poignant and textured recordings that immediately draw listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone’s world.

Whether they are tagged as folky, acoustic, or indie-rock is not a concern for the duo. “It has never been about a stylistic choice; we make it how we make it,” says Angus. Julia adds, “we are two people who play music because, well, just because. We are endlessly surprised and honoured that people get something from it – it makes it so much more special to share it with a community.”

Whether it’s the rhythmic strum, relaxed feel and beautiful lyrical adventure of the title track ‘Cape Forestier’, the seductive opening track ‘Losing You’, the emotive and touching ‘The Wedding Song,’ or the gentle front porch sway of ‘County Sign,’ it seems clear that Angus and Julia Stone were born to be musicians at heart.

They may be modest about their talents and still surprised by the ongoing interest in their songs, but for those around them, Angus and Julia are the embodiment of everything good and natural about song writing, as they seem to constantly capture the essence of honest music.

“This is our most stripped-back album since we started out together… going back to our roots… but with all the branches of experience hanging in there,” Julia laughs.

“Yeah, listening back to our old records, there’s a charm to hearing how innocent we were. We had no idea what was ahead of us… it’s in the voices… but,” Angus ponders, “we still don’t know what’s ahead. If anything, we’re more curious, naïve, and innocent to the mysteries of the world… and what lies ahead… and I can hear that in this record.”

They both laugh gently, knowingly, together. Speaking the same language in the silence between the words.

Angus & Julia Stone are an Australian brother-sister folk-blues group that formed in 2006 by Angus Stone and Julia Stone.

The siblings could be said to be following in their parents footsteps as they performed as a folk duo before Angus and Julia were born. Their father taught all three of his children how to play instruments and at family gatherings, when the children performed, Catherine was on saxophone, Julia on trumpet and Angus on trombone. They had an interesting passage into music, Julia travelled through South America on a gap year absorbing the sights and sounds of the countries she visited whilst Angus taught himself guitar whilst recovering from a snowboarding accident.

When Julia returned to Australia, the pair began to gig in small venues, mainly billed as Angus with Julia offering occasional backing vocal. However their first gig as a duo at the Coogee Bay Hotel, they performed Angus' track, 'Tears'. By that time Julia was writing her own material and they played split sets with each providing backing vocals for the other's material. In 2006 they decided to collaborate indefinitely and it proved a winning formula as by the end of the same year the duo signed a worldwide publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Creative Artists Agency came on board as their UK-European agent.

Shortly after their recordings they gained noteirity in both their native Australia and the UK, In February 2007 they played their first national Australian tour which sold out completely. In the same month their early works 'Chocolates and Cigarettes' and 'Heart Full of Wine' were double-packed and released in Australia and the UK. The double EP reached No. 12 on the UK iTunes and their single, 'Private Lawns', was named Single of the Week on BBC Radio 2. The debut album followed that year and broke the top 10 in the Australian album charts and although it wasn't a commercial success throughout the world, it did receive critical praise from a number of publications including the British Guardian newspaper.

They continued to record as a duo whilst also working on solo material and touring constantly. The following two albums both topped the charts in Australia, whilst the self titled 2014 album made the top 10 around Europe in countries such as France, Germany and the Netherlands and managed to break into the top 100 of the UK album charts also.

Protracted by solo careers which were largely overshadowed by their joint efforts, sibling folk/indie rock sweethearts Angus and Julia Stone have once again reunited with work on a forthcoming album and a European festival tour circuit this summer. Her breathy vocals mixed with his smoky tones meant early success for the Australian duo, with their 2007 debut album A Book Like This having been a critical success. A few albums later, and the siblings decided to go their separate ways– that is, until super producer Rick Rubin decided they’d be better off together. And so here they are, working on their next album, together.

Their indie folk eccentricity emerges whole-heartedly onstage, with a mix of guitars, keyboards and even Julia’s surprising trumpeting skills, giving a unique instrumental mix to the traditionally acoustic sounds typical of generic folk rock. Julia undoubtedly brings the on-stage energy that Angus lacks, her voice’s unrelenting twang and honest interjections adding inadvertent optimism while he stands stoic, hiding behind his long hair and thick beard.

Their most recent showcases demonstrate more of a disjointed connection between the pair than before their mysterious hiatus, although their musicality seems more aligned than ever, surely the result of having co-written an album as a pair. No longer a double-billed act, Angus and Julia Stone are finally transforming into a duo, although you’re almost guaranteed to get a taste of their solo efforts in their live gigs.

I had been a fan of Angus & Julia Stone for many years, however, when I decided to go to the concert on a whim, I was not expecting the level of entertainment and gut wrenching feelings I experienced during the show.

Starting off with the opening act, The Staves, with whom I was not very familiar with at first, but with whom I fell in love with by the end of their set. Their melodic and beautiful harmonies and lyrics were just breathtaking.

Following them were the delightfully anticipated main act, who are one of the most gorgeous siblings I have ever seen. They claimed a presence on stage that filled up the entire arena with their hauntingly mesmerizing voices.

Added to the spectacle of emotions that are Angus & Julia Stone songs, there was a touch of humor offered by Julia Stone, specifically during her cover of "You're the one that I want" where she joyfully asked us to sing "ho ho ho" instead of "ow ow ow" during the chorus, feeding the Christmas spirit. She also recounted a story of how, during a previous gig, a woman jumped on stage and proposed to Angus (understandably).

All in all, it was an unforgettable show filled with twinkle lights and single tears.

I saw the Melbourne show and A&J project a very nurturing but free spirited attitude upon a stadium.

I don't know what i was expecting but i've never seen a female more sensual on stage then Julia Stone, personally.

The backstories to the songs they've written felt very humbling.

I enjoyed the feelings of hopefulness that came with watching A&J bring back the opening acts, which they all then proceeded to rock out to Rock It by the Little Red.

Once A&J really got into Yellow Brick Road, i cried heavily but quietly for the rest of the show.

I've been to a number of concerts, but this was my favourite hands down.

Count on me to be there at their show for their every return to Melbourne, i already can't wait.

A truly memorable experience. Great songs, great light show, great value at only £25, and the very lovely Staves as the support. What a fantastic night. If you get the opportunity hear Julia's live version of 'You're the one that I want' from this the last show on their world tour, it'll send shivers down your spine, especially as she was singing it just to me! I wish.....

Seeing Angus and Julia stone at the opera house was definitely an experience to remember. They are dripping with talent, their music is soul nourishing and heart expanding. The lights were incredible, it felt like being outside in the countryside with the barn lights on and a good fire going. Try never to miss them if they're in your area.

Niall Horan recently brought out Angus & Julia Stone for a cover of their track ‘Big Jet Plane’ at his show in Australia.

While performing at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia yesterday (May 1), Horan brought out the Australian folk and indie pop duo for a rendition of their 2010 hit ‘Big Jet Plane’ from their second LP ‘Down The Way’.

“Night Twenty-Seven Sydney. Thank you to Australian legends @angusandjuliastone for coming out to perform one of my favourite songs,” wrote Horan in an Instagram post of the trio performing the song on stage.

Horan is currently on the Australian leg of his world tour in support of his third album ‘The Show’. His next gigs see him performing at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on May 3 and 4.

Elsewhere, Angus & Julia Stone have released their latest single ‘No Boat No Aeroplane’ from their upcoming sixth studio LP ‘Cape Forestier’

Speaking of the track in a press release, the duo shared: “This song encapsulates those moments in life when it feels like all semblance of stability has vanished, and what we once thought we comprehended has slipped away.”

“The song is about the spirit of resilience and curiosity required in times like that… You have nowhere to go and are full of doubt… but you must head towards the storm; if you turn away, you’ll never truly understand it,” they continued. “It speaks to the notion that confronting challenges head-on, even if it means grappling with tumultuous currents, can lead to a deeper comprehension of the unpredictable nature of the world. ‘My ride is with the wind’.”

Angus & Julia Stone are searching for solace on their new single, “No Boat, No Aeroplane”.

The acclaimed indie folk duo pour their hearts out in the tender track, singing, “I’m in the middle of the ocean / With no boat, no aeroplane.” Both are seeking solace and comfort because, as they then cry, “right now I’m broken.”

“Can you make me a heart / So I can love someday,” the pair yearn. “And I’m not feeling so brave.”

“No Boat, No Aeroplane” is the latest taste of Angus & Julia Stone’s forthcoming sixth studio album, Cape Forestier , which releases later this month. According to a press release, the album “plays like a storybook from the hearts and minds of Angus & Julia Stone, with each song revealing itself as a different page.”

“No Boat, No Aeroplane” follows previous album singles “The Wedding Song”, “Losing You”, and the title track. “The Wedding Song”, was originally penned for a friend’s wedding years ago, and the duo chose it as the lead single  from Cape Forestier “because it’s all about love.”

“Since then, we’ve been honoured to play it at several friends’ and family’s weddings, including our mum’s, and we received so many requests from fans for a proper recording to use on their special day, so we decided to make that happen,” the duo say of “The Wedding Song”.

“The song is a celebration of love and human connection. In a world that can feel disconnected and frightening, we want to share something that reflects the beauty of how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together,” they add.

Cape Forestier is the long-anticipated follow-up to Angus & Julia Stone’s last studio album, Snow , which was certified Gold in 2017. The band released a compilation album, Life Is Strange , in 2021, while Angus also released an album, Kimosabè , under his DOPE LEMON moniker last year.

Following the release of their new album in May, Angus & Julia Stone will embark on a ‘Living Room Sessions’ tour. Tickets are available now via the band’s official website .

In March, the group put on a special performance at the 2024 Shure Rolling Stone Australia Awards alongside Crowded House.
