During the 3 hour- tour you will stop in the Mamertine Prison, an ancient roman prison from the 5 century B.C. used by the Romans to imprison those condemned to death before the final execution. The prison is a very famous place all round the world because the Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul were both prisoned here and they baptized many prisoners, gave them the strength and faith. St. Paul was executed under the Emperor Nero in the 67 A.D. because of the christian’s persecution.

Sites you’ll visit

  • San Paolo fuori le Mura
  • Abbazia delle Tre Fontane
  • Carcer Tullianum
  • San Paolo fuori le Mura The Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls testifies the history of the Holy Church in Rome. The main altar, surmounted by a stunning Gothic canopy, treasures the mortal remains of St Paul, who was buried here. The giant basilica was built as early as the V century AD and features original Roman columns, a great mosaic from the Middle Age, but also the portraits of all the Popes in history, including the last ones: Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI.
  • Abbazia delle Tre Fontane Three Fountains Abbey. According to Catholic tradition, it was raised on the spot where St. Paul was beheaded by order of Emperor Nero in 67 A.C. When severed from Paul's body, his head bounced and struck the ground in three different spots, from which 3 holy fountains sprang up. They still flow today and are located in a sanctuary celebrating the life and death of the Holy Apostle.
  • Carcer Tullianum The Carcere Mamertino is the place where, according to tradition, St Peter and St Paul were imprisoned for almost nine months before being executed. It is located in the basement of a Baroque Church, very close to the Roman Forum and just behind the stunning Arch of Septimus Severus. During your visit to this cave, dug inside the Capitoline hill, you will breathe the devotional and evocative atmosphere of a truly holy site, which is also considered the most ancient jail of the world.

Tour description

Saint Paul, the Apostle, original name Saul of Tarsus, was one of the leaders of the first generation of Christians, often considered to be the second most important person in the history of Christianity. His surviving letters have had enormous influence on subsequent Christianity and secure his place as one of the greatest religious leaders of all time.

Accompanied by an expert guide you will visit the places connected to St. Paul’s life. Start your tour at the  Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura , a church filled with a sacred atmosphere that houses his shrine.

St. Paul came to Rome in 61 AD when the Roman court sentenced him to death for professing his faith. During this tour you will visit the place where this sentence was carried out and the site of his martyrdom - the "palude Salvia" - at the  Abbazia delle Tre Fontane , today a quiet and peaceful monastery in the heart of Rome.

The last stop of your tour will be the  Carcere Mamertino , the oldest prison in Rome, where the Apostles St. Paul and St. Peter were imprisoned for 9 months and where, according to legend, they miraculously made water appear in order to baptize the guards.

Useful information

Appropriate clothing is highly recommended. Please be aware that the access to holy sites requires a strict dress code. The church of St. Paul outside the Walls is part of the itinerary. Shoulders and knees have to be properly covered.

My wife went on a tour of the Coliseum last year and had mixed reviews - basically said her guide seemed to be like an “bitter old man” who wasn’t interested in answering questions, just in telling them what he wanted them to hear. NOT THIS TIME! Our guide Marcius was incredible! He really brought the Coliseum, Roman culture, and history to life! You could tell his passion for history and making sure everyone understood the real truth in what happened at the Coliseum and palace and how that even impacts us today. I couldn’t recommend higher a tour from Marcius! Our feet were tired at the end but it was all worth it to get the inside look on an incredible piece of history. Read more Written April 6, 2024

About your tour

Italy with us is offering you the opportunity to take an epic pilgrimage to four of the most significant shrines that honour St. Paul the Apostle: the Mamertine Prison; the Church of San Paolo alla Regola the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls; and the Abbey of Tre Fontane. One of the most exciting Religious Tours Rome has to offer. One of the key figures in the foundation of the Christian church, this is an excellent tour that provides a fascinating insight into one of the most influential individuals of the common era.

A three-hour pilgrim excursion to the most historic shrines that honour the Apostle Saint Paul, and an in-depth look at his life and death in the capital of the Roman Empire. The Pilgrim Tour includes visits to the Mamertine Prison ; the Church of San Paolo alla Regola ; the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls ; and the Abbey of Tre Fontane . Among the very best Catholic Tours in Rome.

Pope Benedict XVI declared 2008 the "Year of Saint Paul". St. Paul is easily recognized as one of the most prominent and significant of all the apostles and Rome, the city of his apostolic destiny, trial and martyrdom, celebrated his legacy with an extraordinary Jubilee Year. The Pilgrim Tour begins by visiting the place of Saint Paul’s imprisonment at the famous Mamertine prison, near the Roman Forum, where ancient tradition maintains that both “Princes of the Apostles”, Peter and Paul, were captive.

The next stop is at a relatively unknown location in the Jewish Quarter, where Paul lived and taught during his Roman period - the Church of San Paolo alla Regola. With a little bit of luck we may even have the opportunity to visit the room where he wrote three Books of the Bible. This site is usually not open to the public. We shall then proceed to the splendid Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls. This is the traditional burial place of Saint Paul and we shall visit his tomb. While at the basilica, as part of the pilgrim Tour Rome we will see a fascinating array of historical and religious artifacts including:

  • the tabernacle of the confession by Arnolfo di Cambio
  • an exquisite 12th-century candelabra by Vassalletto
  • a 13th century Byzantine style apse mosaic of Christos Pantokrator, and
  • an attractive 19th century series of papal portraits in a frieze extending around the nave.

We will also visit a chapel containing relics and numerous treasures and vestiges of Pauline devotion and also the Benedictine cloister with its cosmatesque decoration. Along the way we shall see many other superb works of art such as the Bronze Doors with silver inlay and the Altar of Saint Paul’s Conversion, with exquisite malachite and lapis lazuli marbles.

The last stop is the Abbey of Tre Fontane, formerly known as Aquae Salviae, where Saint Paul was martyred . This extraordinary location includes a visit to three shrines that honour the Apostle: the site where Saint Paul was beheaded, the Altar of Scala Coeli where Saint Zeno and his legionaries were martyred, and the revered monastic church of the Trappist monks who govern the Abbey. The variety and number of sites guarantee that this is among the premier Religious Tours Rome has to offer.

Christian Pilgrimage Journeys

Apostolic Rome

A 4 days / 3 nights christian tour in italy, day 1: rome.

Meet and greet at the Airport with our tour escort and transfer to the hotel for check in. After that meet the guide for an orientation tour of Rome including the Mamertine prison (site that records the tradition to be the place where Saint Peter and Saint Paul were imprisoned) and St. Peter in Chains (named for the chains that held St. Peter when he was imprisoned in Rome and in Jerusalem. The church is however best known for the statue of Moses that Michelangelo created for the tomb of pope Julius II). Dinner and overnight at the hotel or nearby.

DAY 2: Rome

Breakfast and visit to the Vatican City (length 4hrs approx.). If the tour dates include a Wednesday in Rome, we can escort the group to St Peter’s Basilica for the Papal Audience in the morning and at the end of the Papal blessing, guided tour of the Vatican Museum. Our Tour-guide will lead you through the treasures preserved at the museums visiting also the Sistine Chapel with the masterpieces of Michelangelo, including the Last Judgement, and St. Peter Basilica. Transfer back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight at the hotel or nearby.

DAY 3: Rome

Stop to visit the Holy Stair on the left side of the Square. The Stair that, according to the Christian tradition, was climbed by Jesus to reach the room of the Interrogation with Pontius Pilate before the crucifixion. The 28 steps have been put into effect starting from the highest one, to avoid the builders walk on them and allow only the Pilgrims to kneel down on the stair. Proceed to St Paul Outside the Walls Basilica, rising on the legendary burial place of St Paul Apostle, in the middle of an ancient guest-house on the long way to Ostia.

The Basilica, rebuilt after the fire on 1823, is the second largest Church after St Peter at the Vatican. Here, under the major altar, there’s the tomb of St Paul Apostles and for this reason this Basilica has always been a pilgrimage destination; since 1300 date of the first Holy Year, it has been part of the Jubilee itinerary and seat of the Holy Door’s opening ceremony. After St. Paul outside the Wall Basilica we’ll visit the Three Fountain Abbey raised on the spot where St. Paul was beheaded by order of the Emperor Nero. Legend accounts for the three springs (fontane) with the assertion that, when severed from Paul’s body, his head bounced and struck the earth in three different places, from which fountains sprang up. These still flow and are located in the sanctuary. We will end our tour with the visit to one of the Catacombs of Rome. This can be to St Calisto, St Domitilla or St Sebastian. For their importance, the precious heritage of paintings and sculptures, the Catacombs are nowadays visited by thousands of Pilgrims from all over the world. They are authentic archives of the primitive Church, an attestation of the costumes and rituals of how the Christian doctrine was meant and applied.

Back to city center and visit the of Imperial Rome A leap into the Roman Age (length 3hrs approx.). Welcome to one of the most incredible avenues of the world: Via dei Fori Imperiali. It begins from the slopes of Capitol Hill, behind Venice Square. We start with the visit of one of the most impressive, unknown corners of Rome, the Trajan Market (from outside). It is the first huge, historical commercial area, and was a real shopping centre for the Romans!

Miraculously surviving to our modern age, it preserves the signs of the ancient men and women who inhabited it, using its rooms in many different ways, almost 2.000 years ago. It has been built on six floors covered with vaults. Partially hidden inside the Esquilino Hill, behind the Trajan Forum, today its ambient impact is not so evident due to the collapsing of most of the walls around, but you should know that it was 40 metres tall during the Empire, with corridors and pedestrian passages connecting into other buildings.

Leaving the markets and the Trajan Columns recounting the Roman victory in Dacia region, we continue walking along the Imperial Forum, admiring the Augustus Forum, Tito’s Arch, Settimio Severo’s Arch, Ulpia’a Basilica, Caesar’s Forum and Massenzio’s Basilica therefore we come to the magnificent Coliseum, the Flavius Amphitheatre. Once it was completely covered by white marble, surrounded by columns and statues and it was covered by a huge velario (a tent) protecting the public attending the gladiators show from the sun. In the central platform covered by sand, the sad exhibition of the gladiators fighting to survive against the lions, all around terraces for the common people, the balcony for the Emperor and the Senators...all for the delight of the spectators. Dinner and overnight at the hotel or nearby.

DAY 4: Rome - Airport

After breakfast transfers to Rome Airport where you will depart for the return flight home, filled with new experiences and stories of this tour.

Biblical Readings

Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians ; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. Romans 1:13,14,15
And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul : for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. Acts 23:11
Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged : to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest. For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die : but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar. Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar ? unto Caesar shalt thou go. Acts 25:10,11,12
And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium : and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli: where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days : and so we went toward Rome. And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum, and the Three Taverns ; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage. Acts 28:13,14,15

Why do we not include the Catacombs in our Bible tours?

The answer is in this article cited below. The Catacombs are not at all related to the history of the pure, early Witnesses! However, from a strictly historical point of view, they are very interesting.

If you want to visit the Catacombs we suggest: SAN CALLISTO or SAN SEBASTIANO.

A guided tour of 45 or 60 minutes hosted by their own internal Catholic guides is always included in your entry ticket price!

After you complete your Catacombs of the Appian Way tour, you could add our 3 hour Appian way Bible Tour, which starts in the same area, not far from there!

What travelers are saying ....

This was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on!! I can definitely say it was life-changing.

I loved that JE planned most of the meals to focus on the local cuisine. It was a great experience!

I love this organization! It makes planning so easy and we have never been disappointed.

Thank you for your faithfulness in serving Jesus through this wonderful ministry of student travel. I highly recommend JE!

JE is Christ-centered and they understand the importance of training students to have an eternal perspective.

The trained guides of JE have led with such excellence that our students have been encouraged to share Christ.

I’ve traveled with JE for the last nine years and I would not imagine traveling with any other company.

JE’s depth of knowledge, logistics, and well-trained guides are why I don’t take trips with any other company.

Italy », the apostle paul’s journey to rome- 12 days/ 10 nights.

And the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou has testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome (The Acts 23:11).

Far more than just experiencing a new land or seeing new sights, as our Christian tour to Italy takes us through the spiritually rich and beautiful countryside of Italy, we will reflect, come closer to God, and gratefully consider the sacrifices and dedication of those who have gone before. As we follow in the footsteps of Paul, experiencing some of the same sights and sounds and feelings he would have experienced, and as we behold holy shrines and timeless works of art regarded as the most awe-inspiring and important of the world – we will renew our commitment to the roots of our Christian faith. The worship services and meditations we celebrate along the way will draw us together as a community. They will remind us of our blessings and the call to stewardship as followers of Jesus Christ.
