Understanding the Balinese Architecture

Balinese architecture is a unique blend of aesthetics, ancient culture, and spiritual belief that carries an undeniably captivating charm. Let’s embark on a mesmerizing tour of Bali’s architectural wonders that express an intimate intermingling of mesmerizing art, history, and spirituality.

Influences on Balinese Architecture

Balinese architecture is profoundly influenced by the island’s Hindu-Buddhist past, giving prominence to the intricate craftsmanship and religious symbolism. The style also bears the strong imprint of the Indian, Chinese and Javanese cultures. A keen observer will also perceive certain touches of European character, attributed to the era of Dutch colonization.

Key Characteristics of Balinese Architecture

Some of the key characteristics of Balinese architecture include the use of natural elements like bamboo, wood, and stone; a heavy emphasis on carving and detailing; adherence to the Asta Kosala-Kosali guidelines, which are the Balinese traditional rules on placement and architectural planning; and the incorporation of Hindu religious symbolism like lotus motifs, deity figures, and intricate dragons.

Interplay of History and Culture in Balinese Architecture

The rich history and sophisticated culture of Bali have played a crucial role in shaping its architectural style. The emphasis on public courtyards, open spaces, and communal seating arrangements reflects the island’s communal way of living. The beauty of Balinese architecture isnā€™t just in the physical structures, but also in the culture and history they symbolize.

The Majestic Pura Tanah Lot

Historical background of pura tanah lot.

Pura Tanah Lot, a 16th-century Hindu temple, is one of the seven sea temples built by the high priest Nirartha. Legend has it that this temple has been created on the rock formation the priest chose for his meditation, thus infusing it with sacred vibes.

Architectural Description and Significance

This sacred temple’s architectural design is a fabulous combination of classic Balinese and Hindu elements. Made of dark rock standing against the backdrop of crashing waves, it is not just an architectural wonder but an iconic symbol of Bali itself. The towering Meru (mountain-shaped shrine), and the beautiful pavilions carry deep religious and ceremonial significance.

Visual Characteristics of Pura Tanah Lot

Visually, Pura Tanah Lot bathes in a surreal beauty that is hard to articulate. As daylight breaks, the temple, set against the backdrop of dramatic cliffs and vast ocean, appears silhouetted against the golden sunrise. By dusk, the scene transforms into a silhouette against the iridescent hues of the setting sun. Truly, it is a visual symphony at any given time of the day.

The Iconic Uluwatu Temple

History of uluwatu temple.

Uluwatu Temple, perched atop a cliff 70 meters above the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, is one of the six spiritual pillars of Bali. This legendary temple is believed to be the work of the architect Mpu Kuturan in the 11th Century, establishing the padmasana shrines of Bali.

Architectural Elements and Styling

The primary architectural style of this iconic temple is classical Bali, complete with traditional gateways, beautifully carved pillars, intricately designed stone sculptures, and ornate pavilions. Cast in grayish-black stone, the impressive candi bentar (split gate), the 11-tiered Meru shrine, and the sculptures of mythical creatures such as the garuda, add to the temple’s grandeur.

The Visual Splendor of Uluwatu Temple

Situated on a cliff edge, Uluwatu Temple offers a breathtaking view of the vast blue ocean stretching to the horizon, interplaying with the sky. Visually, this temple is a paradise of sweeping vistas. The sprawling temple complex against the backdrop of the infinite ocean and endless sky is an image of power, spirituality, and natural beauty combined.

The Grandeur of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Historical importance of pura ulun danu bratan.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, established in the 17th century by the king of Mengwi, holds the significant role of water temple, serving the entire region in the outflow area; downstream there are smaller water temples that are specific to each irrigation association.

Architectural Highlights and Features

The architectural design of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is a fusion of the Hindu-Buddhist style, providing a rare and aesthetically pleasing spectacle. The abundant use of multi-tiered Meru shrines and pavilions, named pelinggih meru, indicate a homage to the mountain range, believed to be the home of the gods.

Visual Uniqueness of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Visual uniqueness of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan lies in its enchanting setting – the temple appears to be floating when the Bratan Lake’s water levels rise. With its reflection shimmering in the serene lake, framed by the misty mountains, the visual delight is ethereal.

The Elegance of Taman Ayun Temple

Brief history of taman ayun temple.

Nestled amidst gorgeous gardens, Taman Ayun translates as a ‘Beautiful Garden’. This royal water temple was built by the Mengwi Kingdom’s royal family in 1634, serving as the main site of worship and a unifying symbol of the kingdom.

Unraveling the Architectural Details

This expansive temple complex is adorned with lotus and fish filled ponds, beautifully tiered shrines, gate towers, canopied pavilions, and intricate stone carvings. Multitudes of Meru towers, both big and small, dot the temple complex adding architectural brilliance to the scenic ambience.

Taman Ayun Temple as a Visual Treat

Visually, this temple serves as an exquisitely balanced composition of architecture and nature. The view of the serene water gardens elegantly reflecting the towering traditional structures, against the backdrop of lush greenery, makes for a dreamlike vista.

The Unique Architecture of Besakih Temple

Historical significance of besakih temple.

Known as Bali’s ‘Mother Temple’, Besakih Temple, located on the slopes of Mount Agung, is the most significant and holiest of all Balinese Hindu temples. It is a crucial part of Balinese cultural identity with a history dating back over a thousand years.

Key Architectural Aspects of Besakih Temple

The complex comprises over 80 individual temples, with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The architectural style combines elements of both indigenous Balinese and Hindu influences, with intricately carved stone gateways and numerous multi-tiered shrines.

Visual Attractiveness of Besakih Temple

Perched nearly a thousand meters up the side of Gunung Agung, Besakih Temple offers a breathtaking view of hills, mountains, streams, and rice paddies. This visual splendor is heightened by the charm of the temple’s ancient and grand architectural brilliance.

The Fascination of Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave)

Historical overview of goa gajah.

Commonly known as Elephant cave, Goa Gajah dates back to the 11th century. Despite no connection with elephants, it got the name due to the close proximity of the Lwa Gajah River.

Architectural Specifics of Goa Gajah

The main attraction of this archaeological site is the cave, whose entrance dramatically portrays a gaping mouth of a demonic creature. It features intricate carvings of various menacing creatures and demons carved right into the rock at the cave entrance.

Visual Peculiarities of Goa Gajah

Visually, Goa Gajah holds everyoneā€™s fascination with its blend of historical, spiritual, and natural beauty. The gaping mystical carving at the entrance, the cool dark cave, the open stone idols and the serene green landscape creates a visual aura that borders the surreal.

The Mesmerizing Gunung Kawi

History of gunung kawi.

Believed to be Bali’s oldest and largest ancient monument , Gunung Kawi was established in the 11th century to honor King Anak Wungsu, his favorite queens, and concubines.

Architectural Marvels of Gunung Kawi

This site’s architectural brilliance lies in its colossal shrines. Ten majestic seven-meter-high shrines are exquisitely chiseled side-by-side out of a massive rock face. Each shrine is believed to be a memorial to members of the Balinese royalty.

Visual Grandeur of Gunung Kawi

Nestled amidst lush rice terraces and contrasting with the towering rock sculptures, Gunung Kawi presents an artistically enriching visual spectacle. The towering ancient reliefs set against the backdrop of verdant forest and rice paddies present a visual melody of man-made marvels and natural beauty.

The Ethereal Beauty of Pura Tirta Empul

Historical footprints of pura tirta empul.

The legendary Pura Tirta Empul is a temple of water purification that dates back to 962 AD. The site was created to mask a poisoned spring, turning it into a source of holy water, based on an ancient Balinese myth.

Architectural Significance of Pura Tirta Empul

The central architectural piece of Tirta Empul is the large rectangular pool carved out of stone, fed by the sacred spring via 13 sculptural spouts. Lush gardens and statues depicting various Hindu gods and goddesses are scattered throughout the complex.

Visual Allure of Pura Tirta Empul

Tirta Empul is a visual experience that encompasses not just the architectural charm of the temple but also the color, culture, and spirituality that engulfs it. The intricate stone carvings, the gleaming sacred pool with purification bathers, and the vibrant dress of local devotees add an ethereal quality to this revered place.

Traditional Balinese Houses – A Structure of Harmony

Understanding the concept of balinese houses.

Traditional Balinese houses, often viewed as living works of art, are designed with strong philosophical and spiritual considerations. The concept of ‘Tri Hita Karana’, a philosophy that emphasises harmony among the divine, human and nature, is at the core.

Architectural Layout and Design

Functionality and aesthetics intersect perfectly in these houses. Each house is a miniature version of the island’s layout, with the sacred mountain placed in the northeastern corner and the sea to the southwest. The layout consists of several pavilions, each serving a different purpose, and is always arranged around a temple.

Visual Aspects of Traditional Balinese Houses

Visually, these houses are unique in their simplicity yet intricacy. Richly adorned with carved wooden pillars and gates, they present a harmonious blend of nature-inspired aesthetics and spiritual symbolism. Soaked in earthy tones, these houses beautifully echo the philosophy of living in harmony with nature and the spiritual realm.

This visual tour of Bali’s architectural palette gives you not just an encounter with artistic splendor, but a deeper dive into the island’s profound spiritual ethos and an intimate look at a culture that harmoniously blends life, art, and faith. Wherever your eyes land, they find intrigue, beauty, and the silent storytelling of countless years in the past. There’s no doubt that Bali, with its architectural treasures, is a paradise for those who seek a blend of natural beauty, historic richness, and cultural depth. Remember, next time you visit Bali, you’re not just stepping onto another island, but into an expansive, centuries-old, living museum!

5 Reasons to Do Bali Temple Tours

Here are the key reasons why Bali temple tours are a must-do when in Indonesia:

  • Dive into Balinese Culture : Embarking on a Bali temple tour is like getting a front-row seat to traditional Balinese culture. You’ll witness first-hand the customs and rituals that make up the soul of this beautiful island. From observing religious ceremonies to joining in local celebrations, the experience is nothing short of enriching.
  • Step Back in Time : The temples of Bali aren’t just places of worship – they’re portals into the past. Many of these architectural marvels dating back to the 10th century or even earlier, each with its own tale to tell. A temple tour offers an insightful journey into Bali’s rich history and fascinating mythology.
  • Marvel at Majestic Architecture : Bali’s temples are a testament to the island’s architectural prowess. Their intricate details and unique designs are awe-inspiring, to say the least. Set amidst breathtaking natural landscapes, these temples provide panoramic views that are as spiritually uplifting as they are visually stunning.
  • Discover Hidden Gems : One of the best parts about a Bali temple tour? It takes you off the beaten path. While most tourists flock to the popular beaches, a temple tour lets you explore the lesser-known yet equally captivating corners of Bali. It’s a fantastic way to escape the crowds and experience Bali in its purest form.
  • Hassle-Free Exploration : Planning a DIY itinerary can be quite a task. With a Bali temple tour, you don’t have to worry about logistics. Everything from transportation to tickets is taken care of, leaving you free to immerse yourself in the experience.

In a nutshell, a Bali temple tour offers a unique, immersive, and hassle-free exploration of the island’s cultural, historical, and architectural highlights. It’s an adventure that promises to leave you enriched and inspired. So, pack your bags and get set for an unforgettable journey through the temples of Bali!

Temple Etiquette on Bali Temple Tours

Let’s dive right into the top things you need to know before visiting Bali’s magnificent temples:

  • Dress Modestly : One of the most important things to remember when visiting Bali temples is to dress modestly. Both men and women are required to cover their shoulders and knees. In many temples, you’ll find sarongs available for rent or purchase at the entrance. I remember my first visit to the Uluwatu Temple, where I wrapped myself in a beautiful batik sarong that added an authentic touch to my temple tour!
  • Respect the Temple Grounds : These temples are sacred places of worship for the Balinese people. Always walk on the designated paths and avoid touching any religious artefacts or structures. Refrain from climbing onto the temple structures for photos – it’s considered disrespectful.
  • Mind Your Photography : While most temples allow photography, there are certain areas where it’s prohibited. Always look out for signs or ask a local guide if you’re unsure. Remember, these are places of worship first and tourist sites second. I’ve found that sometimes, putting the camera away and simply soaking in the beauty and serenity of these temples can be a deeply rewarding experience.
  • Public Displays of Affection : In line with respecting local customs, avoid overt displays of affection within the temple premises. The Balinese people are known for their warm and welcoming nature, but it’s essential to respect their cultural norms in return.
  • Understanding Local Customs : The Balinese follow unique customs that you may not be familiar with. For instance, women during their menstrual cycle are discouraged from entering the temples. Also, the head is considered the most sacred part of the body, so never touch someoneā€™s head, not even children.
  • Hiring a Local Guide : Consider hiring a local guide for your temple tour. Not only will they provide valuable insights about the history and significance of the temples, but they’ll also guide you on the dos and don’ts. I had an incredible guide during my visit to Besakih Temple who shared fascinating stories behind each shrine – it truly enriched my experience!
  • Participation in Rituals : If you happen to visit during a ceremony or festival, you may be invited to participate. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Balinese culture. Just remember to follow the locals’ lead and respect their traditions. I recall being part of a purification ceremony at Tirta Empul Temple, where I followed the locals in making offerings and bathing in the holy water – it was an experience I’ll cherish forever!
  • Donation Boxes : You’ll often find donation boxes at the entrance of temples. While it’s not mandatory, a small contribution goes a long way in helping maintain these ancient sites. Plus, it’s a nice way to show your appreciation for the enriching experience these temples provide.
  • Respect the Wildlife : Many temples, like the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, are home to wildlife. While it’s exciting to see these creatures up close, remember to observe from a distance and avoid feeding or touching them. It’s about respecting their space as much as we respect the temples.
  • Stay Hydrated and Protected : Bali can get quite hot, especially during the day. When you’re exploring temples, remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Carry a water bottle and wear sun-protective clothing or use sunscreen. Trust me, nothing dampens a temple tour like a nasty sunburn!

Remember, the goal of visiting these temples is not just sightseeing, but also understanding and respecting the Balinese culture. These guidelines will help ensure you have a memorable and respectful temple tour experience in Bali. Happy exploring!

Discover the architecture of Bali

By Hazel Lubbock

Architecture tour of Bali | Luxury Travel

Architect Trisha Newson has developed a tour to introduce guests at Alila to the Balinese approach to home design, which is based on the belief that homes and buildings are an extension of the human body, and that architecture should therefore reference the human form. Drawing on Newson's thesis on philosophical references in Balinese architecture, the six-day trip includes stays at Alila Ubud in the heart of Bali's cultural scene, and Alila Manggis on the east coast, taking guests to see temples and palaces with intricate landscaped gardens and courtyards.

Guests spend the first day of the trip relaxing at the serene Alila Manggis, located between the sea and Bali's highest volcano, Mount Agung. Due to the climate, most Balinese homes feature a courtyard. But while typical peasant homes tend to be very small and simple, palaces feature hundreds of interior courtyards, many of which feature ornate carving and sculpture. Thus, on the next day, explorers set off for a glimpse of Royal life, visiting the home and watergardens of the Karangasem family.

On the third day, the guide takes guests to wander around the well-preserved mountain village of Tenganan, where local people still abide by a ban on felling any live tree in the village forest for non-ceremonial purposes.

There are then two options for the next leg of the journey, which takes guests to the bustling centre of Ubud. On the next leg of the journey, which takes guests to the bustling centre of Ubud, guests choose between a trip to the Kertha Gosa Museum, or a more active itinerary which includes climbing the 500 steps up to Bali's highest temple, the Penulisan Temple.

The final two days of the trip takes guests to the past and present capitals, with a day trip to the ancient Kingdom of Mengwitani, seeing palace architecture at Puri Denpasar and a visit to the Museum Bali and Jagadnatha temple.

Tailor-made programmes on alternative dates and for longer and shorter stays are also available upon request. Tours cost from US$1475pp and include 6-nights B&B at Alila Mangggis and Alila Ubud; airport and inter-hotel transfers; a Balinese massage at Alila Ubud; a traditional Balinese meal at Alila Manggis; all tour guiding and entrance to architectural sites and Alila hospitalities. Delight in the Whimsical Architecture and Landscapes of Bali

By Stephanie Strasnick

Photography by Isabella Ginanneschi

Even before Eat, Pray, Love came on the scene, the picturesque, sun-soaked Indonesian island of Bali was a source of creative and spiritual inspiration for writers, travelers, and filmmakers alikeā€”and for good reason. Baliā€™s sweeping landscape, diverse architecture, and sacred rituals are a feast for the imagination. ā€œCreativity is at the innermost core of Bali,ā€ writes author Duncan Murray Kirk in his new book, In the Spirit of Bali (Assouline, $50). ā€œLiterally everyone exercised their own inherited artistic talents.ā€ Kirkā€™s book is a celebration of Baliā€™s cultural and recreational offerings, touching on the rich and colorful architectural history, indigenous wildlife, and centuries-old traditions that make the island the mysterious and enticing place it is today.

Kirkā€™s text is expertly paired with tantalizing images by Italian photographer Isabella Ginanneschi. ā€œOnce visited, Bali is not easy to stay away from,ā€ writes Kirk. ā€œMany travelers become regular returnees.ā€ Through Ginanneschiā€™s photographs, itā€™s easy to see why. We've selected some of our favorites, sure to place the island on your must-visit list.

The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, imposed new regulations for those who are planning to travel to Bali. Since 14 October 2021, Bali has been gradually opening its doors to international tourists. On 3 FebruaryĀ  2022, the inaugural commercial flight of Garuda Indonesia Airline carrying international tourists landed in Bali from Narita, Japan. By relaxing the travel restrictions to Bali, the Indonesian Government hopes that this move will be able to revitalize the countryā€™s tourism.

On 7 March 2022, the government also applied a quarantine-free trial period and a Visa On Arrival (VOA) program for 23 selected countries. The list of countries was then extended to 42 on 22 March 2022, 43 countries on 6 April 2022, then to 60 countries on 28 April 2022, and on 30 May 2022 to 72 countries.

Ideas to inspire your world: luxury, culture, food, travel, style, november 12, 2023, just back: a private luxury tour of bali.

private luxury Bali tours

Q: How did you decide on Bali?Ā

A: Bali has been on my travel list for a while and I thought it would be a perfect destination to visit with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. Bali offers a great balance of scenic, cultural and culinary touring, romantic dining and resorts, and opportunities for total relaxation.

architecture tour bali

Q: Where did you go?

A: We wanted a variety of cultural and scenic touring with plenty of time to relax at luxury resorts on either end of our itinerary.

We started at a luxurious seaside resort in Jimbaran Bay in southern Bali, an area known for its turquoise waters and golden sand beaches. It was the perfect place to relax after the long flight, and we spent several days soaking up the ocean views and enjoying spa treatments, yoga classes and great food.

architecture tour bali

We continued north to the town of Ubud, considered the cultural heart of Bali. It offers a great mix of cultural, scenic and culinary touring. It is especially known for its traditional crafts and iconic landscapes of rainforests, waterfalls and rice terraces.

architecture tour bali

We privately toured water palaces and visited Hindu temples, attended a Balinese dance performance, hiked to waterfalls and through rice terraces and shopped for traditional Balinese crafts.

architecture tour bali

We concluded in eastern Bali at the luxurious Amankila resort near Candidasa for more downtime before the trip home. East Bali is known as the islandā€™s most traditional region, with artisan villages, historic water palaces and sacred temples. The volcanic landscapes are spectacular, with lush rice terraces, forested mountains and a beautiful coastline.

These destinations are the top destinations featured in Artisans of Leisure’s luxury Bali tours .

architecture tour bali

Q: What were some of your favorite experiences?

A: We enjoyed a range of experiences, including touring temples and palaces, hiking in the gorgeous natural scenery, visiting artisan villages and relaxing at resorts with incredible views, spas, service and restaurants.

architecture tour bali

One of our favorite experiences was visiting an artisan village near Ubud thatā€™s known for its high-quality gold and silver jewelry. We met the silversmiths at one shop and learned about the Balinese designs and motifs incorporated into the pieces, which was really interesting.

architecture tour bali

Many villages around Ubud specialize in different local crafts, such as wood carving, stone carving, shadow puppets, traditional paintings and more. Artisans of Leisureā€™s guides will tailor shopping excursions to suit your interests.

architecture tour bali

En route from Jimbaran Bay to Ubud, we visited the Turtle Conservation and Education Center, a rescue and rehabilitation center for sea turtles on Serangan Island. Most species of sea turtles in Bali are endangered, and the center is committed to rescue, research and education.

architecture tour bali

We loved this experience! You get to see different types and ages of turtles and learn about the different species and conservation efforts. The baby turtles were so tiny and cute.

architecture tour bali

Visitors can participate in an adopt-and-release program. For a donation, you can take a turtle that is ready to return to the wild and release it yourself on the beach.

architecture tour bali

Other experiences we enjoyed included hiking through rice paddies and learning about the farming process. The rice terraces are beautiful, and seeing those iconic landscapes was incredible.

architecture tour bali

We also took several hikes to waterfalls. There are so many in Bali, and Artisans of Leisure can arrange a short, gentle stroll to one or more strenuous guided hikes that last several hours.

architecture tour bali

One day, we toured the Ubud Palace, a beautiful temple-palace compound where the local royal family lives. Part of it is open to the public, and we enjoyed seeing the traditional carvings and courtyards and learning more about their history and significance.

architecture tour bali

For interested travelers, Artisans of Leisure can arrange attendance at an evening dance and music performance at Ubud Palace.

architecture tour bali

We also met with a local Balinese healer at his house. I loved seeing the inside of a traditional Balinese home. Spiritual healers are an important part of Balinese culture, and meeting with one is an interesting way to engage firsthand with local traditions.

architecture tour bali

One afternoon in eastern Bali, we came across a local festival, which was fun to see. There are always festivals happening in Bali, and most Artisans of Leisure travelers have the opportunity to see one.

architecture tour bali

Q: Bali is often called the ā€œIsland of the Godsā€ due to its Hindu spirituality and the numerous temples and religious sites across the island. What were some of your favorites?

A: There are so many temples! We prioritized seeing a mix of different kinds: coastal temples such as Pura Tanah Lot or Uluwatu, a water temple such as Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu and a beautiful temple with gardens or water features such as Pura Taman Ayun.

architecture tour bali

Pura Tanah Lot had the most scenic setting on a rocky island off the coast. You canā€™t go inside, but itā€™s such a beautiful site.

architecture tour bali

One of my favorites, and the one I thought was the most beautiful and impressive inside, was Pura Taman Ayun. Itā€™s a 17th-century water temple, a former royal palace and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its groundwater management system ( subak ). Subak is an ancient system integral to agricultural, social and religious life.

architecture tour bali

Pura Taman Ayun is a large complex with gardens, pavilions, pagodas and courtyards built around water. Itā€™s a sacred bathing temple, and seeing that aspect of the culture was really interesting.

architecture tour bali

Q: Tell us about the food! What was your favorite restaurant or culinary experience?

A: The food in Bali is incredible! A lot of the food combines indigenous cooking with Chinese and Indian influences. Rice is a staple combined with vegetables, fish, meat and spices to create very flavorful dishes.

architecture tour bali

One of our favorite culinary experiences was a 17-course dinner (the portions were small!) at an upscale restaurant in Ubud. They use only fresh, local ingredients, and the dishes are a unique, creative interpretation of traditional Balinese and Indonesian food. We sat at the counter and watched the chefs in the kitchen, which was really fun. They also paired each dish with an art piece for sale in the restaurant, which was really unique and special.

architecture tour bali

One of our favorite resort restaurants was Kubu at Mandapa, where we had our own private cocoon. We had an 8-course gourmet tasting menu of Mediterranean and European dishes overlooking the Ayung River.

architecture tour bali

Also, Api Jiwa at Capellaā€”the food was amazing, and the cocktail (and mocktail) combinations were spot on.

architecture tour bali

Artisans of Leisure can arrange special dining experiences around Bali, private cooking classes, and visits to local markets.

Q: Bali has such incredible local crafts. How was the shopping? Did you bring home anything special?

A: I brought home a kaftan and jewelry made by the artisans we met. Going to the art market in Ubud was really fun. We had a great time browsing and bargaining for gifts for family and friends.

architecture tour bali

Q: Tell us about the resorts.

A: We began at the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay, which was amazing. Itā€™s just 20 minutes from the airport (which is great for international arrivals) but tucked away in the most tranquil, beautiful setting that feels very private.

architecture tour bali

They do a great job of incorporating a sense of place with architecture and design inspired by a traditional Balinese village.Ā The food at the resort was fantastic. The breakfast buffet was a highlight! It offers a variety of cuisines from all over the world.

architecture tour bali

The spa was amazing and incredibly beautiful. Itā€™s considered one of the best spas on the island.

architecture tour bali

In Ubud, we stayed at Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Capella Ubud. Theyā€™re very different from each other, and we enjoyed experiencing both.

architecture tour bali

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a luxurious sanctuary outside of the town of Ubud, hidden away in a lush river valley.

architecture tour bali

It has stunning villas with private gardens and gorgeous views of rice terraces. Itā€™s very spread out, which contributes to the sense of privacy and serenity, but you can take golf carts everywhere.

architecture tour bali

Itā€™s a smaller resort and felt very intimate and exclusive.

architecture tour bali

It has such a wow factor when you first arrive. Check-in is on a platform overlooking the resort spread out below, surrounded by jungle.

architecture tour bali

The decor of the suites and villas reflects traditional Balinese art and design. Each one comes with a dedicated butler.

architecture tour bali

The wellness facilities are located by the Ayung River. There are yoga classes with highly regarded yogis on platforms in the terraced rice fields and riverside pavilions. There are also options for guided meditation, private sessions with healers, luxurious massage therapies and a heated vitality pool overlooking the lush jungle.

architecture tour bali

Capella Ubud, a luxurious tented camp about 25 minutes north of Ubud, offers a completely different experience and is a great option for more adventurous travelers.

architecture tour bali

The camp was designed by Bill Bensley, who also created two other tented camps loved by Artisans of Leisure travelers, Shinta Mani Wild in Cambodia and Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand. Inspired by stories of Dutch settlers in the 1800s, Capella Ubud captures the spirit of 19th-century exploration, albeit in a very luxurious way.

architecture tour bali

The secluded, spacious tents are individually decorated with Balinese and European antiques, travel trunks, handmade batik and ikat fabrics, wood carvings and teak floors.

architecture tour bali

We had a tent with a private plunge pool looking out into the jungle.

architecture tour bali

We enjoyed the beautiful setting, nostalgic atmosphere and excellent food and service.

architecture tour bali

We also stayed at Amankila, a beautiful resort and an ideal base for exploring eastern Bali that’s a favorite with Artisans of Leisure travelers. In contrast with the other resorts that showcase Balinese design, itā€™s very much an Aman property with spacious villas decorated in a minimalist style.

architecture tour bali

The resort is on a hillside overlooking the Lombok Strait, and we enjoyed relaxing by the pool with impressive views.

architecture tour bali

A: Itā€™s a very family-friendly destination. We saw so many families with children of all ages, from babies in carriers to teenagers. There are many fun adventure activities, wellness activities and experiences like private cooking classes, visiting the turtle conservation center, private boat charters and fishing. Other hands-on experiences Artisans of Leisure can arrange include planting rice with a local farmer and making floral offerings or batik fabrics.

architecture tour bali

There is something for every age, interest and fitness level. Also, the resorts have great kidsā€™ clubs with a variety of curated activities for younger travelers.

architecture tour bali

Q: What about active touring in Bali?

A: Ā Bali is a fantastic destination for active touring in spectacular landscapes. Some options include river rafting, hiking, biking, horseback riding, ziplining, diving and snorkeling. Itā€™s also a significant destination for yoga and wellness travel .

architecture tour bali

Q: What would you recommend in combination with Bali for a more extended tour?

A: Ā For travelers with more time, I recommend combining Bali with Java , Lombok or Sumba.

Bali and Singapore also combine really well, and there are new direct flights from New York to Singapore, making it a convenient place to stop en route or on the trip back to the States.

Q: What makes an Artisans of Leisure tour of Bali special?

A: The quality and expertise of our guides and the flexibility we offer on the ground. Also, the ultra-luxurious resorts we book and the personalized experiences we arrange, whether for a couple on a honeymoon or a multigenerational family tour.
