Kawah Ijen Tour From Bali – The Ultimate Ijen Crater Hike Guide

Posted on Last updated: December 2, 2020

If you’re an adventure and hiking fan, you need to add the Kawah Ijen sunrise hike to your travel bucket list. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano in East Java, and one of the few places in the world where you can see blue flames.

When I found out about it on my first Bali, I decided that I couldn’t miss out on this experience. We did a Ijen crater tour from Bali , and while being pretty knackering, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

If you’re also planning to do the Mount Ijen sunrise hike, this is the guide for you! In this post I’ve outlined everything you need to do about doing the Kawah Ijen night hike, whether you do it yourself or with a tour .

I’ve included some basic information about this incredible natural phenomenon, how to get there, what to expect, what you need to bring and some Ijen crater tour options to choose from.

So let’s dive in and start planning your Bali to Mount Ijen tour!

About Kawah Ijen

Kawah Ijen is on the island of Java in Indonesia , an island famous for its spectacular temples and wild nature. Ijen is actually a group of composite volcanoes.

Kawah Ijen is the highest and the one with the largest crater, which most travellers visit and hike due to the blue flame phenomenon.

The blue flames of Kawah Ijen are a natural phenomenon visible only here due to the combustion of sulphuric gases. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano, but it doesn’t erupt lava as you would expect.

The eruptions are actually of methane and other gases, which make it particularly dangerous as they can’t be predicted like normal eruptions.

The Ijen crater is filled of bright turquoise water, which despite being beautiful to see, is actually extremely acidic.

Mount Ijen has a dramatic and dangerous beauty to it. Doing a Mount Ijen sunrise tour, hiking up at night to see the blue flames and sunrise is an experience I recommend to all outdoors adventure lovers.

How to get to Mount Ijen from Bali

Ijen is in East Java. To get there from Bali you need to drive for around 4 hours (from the main tourist parts of Bali like Ubud, Seminyak or Canggu) to Gilimanuk, where you then get a 1-hour ferry to Java, and then for a final 1-hour drive to the base of Kawah Ijen.

The easiest way to get to Ijen from Bali is do to an organised tour , since they will handle all the transfers and you will then have a guide to support you during the hike.

You can also get there without a tour by either renting a scooter, renting a car or a combination of buses. While it might be cheaper I personally think it would add quite a lot of faff to an already long journey and isn’t worth it.

Our experience doing a Mount Ijen sunrise tour from Bali

We set off from Seminyak at 6pm on the Friday. We did 4- hour minivan drive to Gilimanuk, where we got a 1-hour long ferry to East Java, and then another 1-hour drive to the base camp of Kawah Ijen.

We were ready to be up all night, so spending the car journey sleeping if you can is the best way to ensure you are fresh for the hike.

We were told to wear warm clothes as it can get cold on top of the volcano, and stupidly dismissed it wondering how cold it could really be.

Unsurprisingly, we were wrong and as soon as we stepped out of the car we were greeted by the chilly mountain air.

As our guides explained some of the basics about climbing Kawah Ijen they also handed out warm coats to the foolish people like me that didn’t bring one, along with headlights to climb up in the dark and gas masks for the sulphur gases.

At 2am we set off from the base camp and started hiking under the starry sky. Being a city girl born and raised, I don’t often get to see the night sky unaffected by light pollution, and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

The hike can be intense and quite steep at parts, but the path is easy to walk since there is an almost paved path, as it used every day by the sulphur miners. It was easy also because we were continuously supported by our guides.

Harry and the other guides know the volcano inside out, and it was fascinating to hear their stories of when they hiked Kawah Ijen as sulphur miners.

The Blue Flames of Kawah Ijen

After the first steep 45 minutes the path flattens out a bit, which makes the second half of the hike easier.

When we were about to approach the peak we were advised to put on our gas masks, as we were downwind form the mines and the sulphur was blowing in our direction.

After 1.5 hours of hiking under the stars we made it to the top, just in time to see the  blue flames . This natural phenomenon happens due to the combustion of sulphuric gases.

The gases emerge from cracks in the rock at high pressure and temperature, and when they come in contact with the air, they ignite, creating the blue flames.

When we were there we weren’t allowed to go closer to the flames or inside Ijen crater due to the high levels of methane. Depending on the season and daily weather conditions you might be able to go inside the crater.

While the blue flames were undeniably cool, it wasn’t the highlight of the tour for me. The beauty of the landscape, hiking under the starry sky and the unforgettable sunrise were what made the experience so incredible for us.

The Kawah Ijen Sunrise

Once we decided we had seen enough blue flames we started hiking once again. This part was considerably easier since the area around the crater of the volcano is pretty much flat.

We walked all the way around the crater to the east side, where we sat to wait for the sunrise. That moment of trepidation, sat with other hikers as the sky began to lighten was truly magical.

As the sun came up everything around us became golden, revealing the beauty of the Mount Ijen landscape.

We spent a couple hours at the top, enjoying the warmth of the rising sun and exploring the top of the crater, admiring the turquoise lake beneath us.

The hike back was considerably easier, although a little hard on the knees. On the way back we saw the sulphur miners carrying bamboo baskets, filled with up to 70kg of sulphurs on their shoulders.

Enjoying the morning light after the night hike

It’s crazy to think that we hiked Kawah Ijen as tourists, admiring the beautiful night sky, the peculiarity of the blue flames and acid lake, and the stunning sunrise, while others were hiking it at our same time but for work, trying to make a living.

That is one of the things I love about travelling, you see new things and meet new people, and it makes you reflect on your experiences and how you affect those you meet.

If you want to find out more about the job of the sulphur miners at Kawah Ijen you can check out this documentary by the  BBC  or article by  CNN .

Once we made it back to the base camp we then drove off to a traditional Javanese family house, for a typical Javanese breakfast. After being up and hiking all night this was much needed and appreciated.

We then got in the car and got ready to nap on our 6-hour journey back to Bali.

Can you hike Ijen without a guide?

It depends on your fitness and confidence level. The trail itself is fairly easy and well marked. There are also so many people going up between tourists and miners that it’s almost impossible to get lost.

However if you want to go down inside the crater the path is a little trickier, and having a guide help you and show you where to put your feet will make it much easier.

Personally I was glad to have a guide with us. Our guide used to work as a sulphur miner and had lots of interesting stories about Kawah Ijen. It was also one of my first night hikes so I was glad for the extra support.

If you’re an experienced hiker and have done lots of night hikes before you would be fine without one. Just rent a gas mask at the base of Ijen, follow the crowds and you’re sorted.

Is doing a Ijen crater tour from Bali worth it?

It ultimately depends on how long you have in Bali, but personally, I don’t think so.

While there’s no doubt that hiking under the Milky Way, seeing the natural phenomenon of the blue flames and that stunning sunrise is a magical experience, it’s also a knackering one.

On my first trip to Indonesia I only had 10 days in Bali . Taking 24 hours out of that to see Ijen destroyed us, and we spent the few days after that in Ubud just recovering from the night hike and long journey.

If you have longer in Indonesia then yes, I think you should do it. If I were to go back and hike Ijen again I would do one of the following options instead.

Do a 3-day Ijen & Bromo tour from Bali – The journey from Bali to East Java is pretty long and knackering. I recommend visiting also Mount Bromo while you’re at it.

That way the long bus and ferry journeys will be spread out and not back to back in 24 hours, and you’ll see also one of the most stunning natural landscapes in Indonesia.

Click here to find out more about doing a 3-day Bromo & Ijen tour!

Borobudur, Bromo & Ijen tour from Yogyakarta – Alternatively you can also do a 4-day tour from Yogyakarta. This tour also includes a visit to Borobudur, one of the most beautiful temples in Indonesia.

It’s the perfect alternative and gives you the opportunity to see more than just Bali. However it’s quite a long trip so best suited for those who have a long time to spend in Bali.

Hike Mount Batur in Bali instead – If you’re tight on time and can only visit Bali, but really want to do a volcano night and sunrise hike, then I would recommend hiking Mount Batur instead.

Sure, there are no blue flames and the landscape is completely different, but you will still get the night hike experience, without having to take 24 hours out of your day to do so.

Where to stay for your Mount Ijen hike

If you’re doing your Ijen crater tour from Bali it doesn’t really matter where in Bali you’re staying, since it will usually include pick-up and drop-off.

I’ve listed below some of the places I stayed at during my two trips to Bali, which I particularly liked and can recommend.

In Ubud:  Desa Visesa  or  Komaneka at Monkey Forest

I stayed in Ubud twice on separate occasions and in very different types of hotels.

The first time I stayed at Komaneka at Monkey Forest, located right in the centre of Ubud, an easy walking distance to all the main attractions.

Despite being so central it wasn’t noisy, and the resort is very beautiful. I also stayed in a resort called Desa Visesa, which was a bit outside the centre of Ubud but they offer a free shuttle service in the town centre.

Both offer standard rooms at affordable prices, or private villas with pool if you’re looking for something a bit fancier. They’re both also very Insagrammable hotels , perfect for those picture perfect holiday shots!

In Cepaka:  Villa Sungai

If you’re willing to splurge a bit on your Bali trip, Villa Sungai is the place to do it. Villa Sungai has been featured multiple times in luxury travel magazines and has won multiple awards.

The property itself is beautiful, with outdoors bathrooms and private pools. The staff are simply stunning and really go out of their way to make your stay there unforgettable. It’s one of the best private pool villas in Bali .

In Canggu:  Pondok Homestay

In Canggu we stayed at Pondok Homestay , a lovely property a short 20 minute walk down to the beach. For 24 EUR a night we had a private ensuite room with air conditioning and a pool.

The property was just off the main road and next to a rice field, away from the noise of the busy street, which made it a very quiet and pleasant place to stay.

What to bring to hike Kawah Ijen

If you choose to do a Ijen guided tour they will provide you with the essentials like gas mask and a warm coat.

You don’t need much besides the usual travel essentials, but I’ve listed below some things that you should remember to pack.

Warm coat – I know what you’re thinking, you’re going to Bali, you don’t want to bring a warm coat with you! With a tour they should give you one, but better safe than cold!

Water bottle – There are no services whatsoever once you start the hike, so make sure to bring plenty of water with you for the hike!

Comfortable walking shoes – You don’t want your feet to hurt half way through the hike. Bring some comfy walking shoes with you and you’ll be sorted for a night of hiking!

Head torch – You’ll be hiking in the dark after all! They should give you one if you do a tour, but if you’re hiking alone you will definitely need one, even if there will be lots of lights from other people hiking.

Indonesia’s Greatest Sulphur Mine: The Ultimate Guide to Climbing Ijen

' src=

The last time I joined an Ijen tour it was the early morning and I never got to see the blue flames. I was so glad that I had decided to make the trip a second time. Here’s a guide to the Ijen Volcano Tour so you can plan the trip for yourself. Let’s get started. Here’s a guide to the Ijen Volcano Tour so you can plan the trip for yourself. Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

There are two ways to get to Ijen crater. One route is from Banyuwangi, which is by the coast. The other route is from Bondowoso, which is in the highlands. You can find a quick review of the different options below. Based on my own experience I’d recommend staying in Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi to Ijen

Ijen is a one-hour drive from Banyuwangi. There are a lot of hotel options available in and around the town and several restaurants where you can get food. You can get trains to Banyuwangi from Surabaya and the ferry from Bali docks at the port in the town. There are also more company’s offering Ijen crater tours. For these reasons I found Banyuwangi is the most convenient place to stay.

Bondowoso to Ijen

Some tourists visiting Ijen choose to stay just outside of Bondowoso. Personally I do not recommend this option. The  city is further away from Ijen than Banyuwangi (it’s a 90-minute drive from Ijen). There aren’t as many hotels either. On the plus side it is a beautiful area. The highlands around Bondowoso are covered in tea plantations.

The Ijen Crater Tour

There are lots of company’s around Banyuwangi and Bondowoso offering tours to Ijen. The most popular tour is the Ijen Midnight tour, with pickup at 1 am and drop off some time after sunrise. Many company’s also offer sunset tours, which start around 3 pm with drop off back at the hotel at around 8 pm.

I’ve visited Ijen for sunrise, during the day and for sunset. Based on my experiences I’d recommend joining the Ijen Midnight Tour. On the Midnight Tour you’ll get to see the blue flames of Ijen, more about that later, sunrise over the crater and then finally the crater itself. The sunset tour is not as good (though you can still see the blue fire and you will get a good nights sleep).

Highlights of the Tour

Ijen is probably one of my favourite tourism destinations for first time visitors in Indonesia. The landscape is out of this world. One of the highlights of visiting Ijen is the blue flames, which you can only see at night. The flames appear at the base of Ijen crater and are caused by sulphuric gas catching fire. You can find an article about the flames in the National Geographic here .

One of the other things that brings people to Ijen is the landscape. The volcano is an active sulphur mine. The liquid sulphur comes out of the vents with the gas and spreads out over the floor of the crater turning everything around it yellow (and the crater lake a beautiful and unnatural turquoise). The effect is out of this world and makes for amazing photographs.

The miners that collect the sulphur have become another part of the tourist attraction. These miners lead a difficult life. They carry 70-90 kg or more of sulphur on their backs all the way from inside the volcano crater to the base. It’s an easy two hour walk. The miners get paid just Rp 1,000 a kilo. I tried to lift one of these baskets up and barely managed it. There’s a really interesting article about the sulphur miners of Ijen here .

Preparing For the Tour

The Ijen Crater Tour is hard. The tour takes about 6 hours from start to finish. You’ll be hiking for almost 4 hours uphill and downhill. It’s a lot of exercise and you’ll feel it in your calf muscles. Unless you are a very active person I would recommend doing some exercises leading up to hiking Ijen. You can find some other recommendations below.

Things to Remember

  • If you are coming from Bali to Ijen make sure to change the time on your watch before you go to sleep at your hotel. Java is one hour behind Bali time.
  • The smell of the sulphur gas in Ijen volcano is really strong. Make sure to bring a piece of cloth that you can wrap around your mouth for when you enter the crater.
  • Sounds obvious but bring a flashlight for the climb up Ijen volcano.
  • Make sure to bring some warm clothes, especially a windbreaker, as it’s cold on the top of Ijen.

Hiking Ijen

Before you even start to hike Ijen you need to buy a ticket. The ticket costs Rp 100,000 per person for a foreigner. It is Rp 150,000 on the weekend. The price for Indonesian’s is a lot less, something like Rp 15,000 per person. You should buy the ticket from the office at the entrance of the car park. You can see a photo of the office above.

The first part of the Ijen crater tour is the climb. There are two sections to the climb. The first part is the ascent. The path is not too steep, but it is a long climb. Once you get near the top of the volcano the path loops around the rim of Ijen crater. It takes between 1-2 hours to climb the volcano depending on how fit you are. You don’t really need a tour guide to climb Ijen. The path is easy to follow and there will be lots of other tourists climbing at the same time as you.

When you arrive at the top of Ijen volcano you will be met by locals who are renting gas masks. The gas masks are for the climb into the crater. Although they will tell you that you need to rent a mask to enter the crater you don’t. A piece of cloth around your mouth should be enough. If you have asthma or breathing difficulties I’d recommend renting a mask.

Entering Ijen Crater

From the top of Ijen crater you can see the crater lake and a flicker of light. It takes about 20 minutes to trek to the bottom of the crater. The path is steep and slippery. In many places it is just large enough for one person. If the wind is blowing in your direction plumes of sulphur will cross the path making it difficult to breath. It’s disorientating and it’s easy to get lost (I’d recommend going with a guide).

When you get to the bottom of the crater everything is calm. You don’t smell the sulphur, because the smoke all goes up in the air. This is the best bit of the Ijen Crater Tour. When I visited I spent about 2 hours sitting in the crater. It didn’t feel like a long time. It’s not cold in. The crater is sheltered from the wind. The view of the blue fire is really amazing and there are always lots of interesting people that you can meet and talk to.

If you don’t want to stay long in the crater you can leave your hotel around 2 am. This gives you enough time to see the blue flame and also watch the sunrise. It’s a popular option for a lot of tourists who join an Ijen crater tour. While you can do this, I recommend arriving earlier to avoid the crowds and get a good view.

Sunrise at Ijen

Sunrise is around 5 am. The best place to see the sunrise is from the top of the crater. It takes about 40 minutes to climb out of the crater. If you want to watch sunrise overlooking the lake start climbing back up around 4 am. When the sun does rise over Ijen it happens very quickly. In just 10 minutes the sky turns from a light grey and the colours appear. It’s the best time for photos.

I spent at least an hour at the top of the crater after sunrise walking around and taking photos of the area. It was a really nice way to end the Ijen volcano tour. If you have the energy you can enter the crater again for a closer look at the crater lake. It’s worth the effort as the landscape is unreal. Everything is coloured yellow because of the sulphur and you have the bright turquoise crater lake in front of you.

Trekking Back to Base

The last part of the tour is the walk back down the hill. It took me about 30 minutes to reach the bottom. By the time I reached the bottom of the volcano I was exhausted. My muscles ached and I was having trouble walking (I passed a lot of people who couldn’t walk any further and were paying the miners to cart them down to the bottom). It’s a tough hike, but you are rewarded for the effort by the beautiful views.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed the Ijen crater tour. The Midnight Ijen Tour a lot more interesting than the Ijen day tour. Seeing the blue flames and sunrise over Ijen Volcano is really quite special. Although it’s a long night and it can be cold I would recommend the Ijen tour to anybody visiting East Java for the first time. It’s a really unforgettable experience.

Hi Salmon, Thanks for stopping by here. Should go and visit Ijen 🙂

' src=

mbak firsta, how much the ticket price for the domestic? and is it so crowded at the crater when you took those blue fire picture? (compared with Bromo maybe). and the last is. would you give some tips to capture the blue fire with a camera? thank you 😀

Hi Gallant, The entrance fee is Rp 10,000 per person. Yes it was pretty crowded that night 🙂 The trick is to hike up fast so you can be one of the first few people who arrive at the bottom of the crater. The other tip is to find a spot where you will be able to take a photo of the blue fire without there being a crazy crowd in frame. Bring a tripod as well to help with taking a photo at slow shutter speed (for the blue fire or when it is dark).

Kawah Ijen or Mount Ijen Volcano Indonesia is located in Banyuwangi East Java Indonesia ear from Bali Island. Banyuwangi is at the easternmost tip of Java, and is best known for its ferry connection at Ketapang to Gilimanuk in Bali.

Kawah Ijen Volcano

  • 3 Ijen Crater Tour From Bali By GWI Tour
  • 4 Mount Ijen Crater Tour Itinerary

Ijen Crater or Ijen Plateau or known to Indonesians as Kawah Ijen, is one of the top recommended volcano in Indonesia to be visited. This active crater of 134 sq km has a landscape of volcanic cones of both Mount Ijen/Ijen Crater and Mount Merapi (not to be confused with the famous Mount Merapi in Central Java).

How To Get To Ijen From Bali

Tour to Ijen Crater from Bali is very easy. Here are the detail scedule Tour to Ijen Crater from bali by public transport.

  • Bus from Denpasar Bali to Gilimanuk is around IDR 100,000 rupiah per person.
  • Ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang Port Banyuwangi is around IDR 6,500 – IDR 10,000 rupiah per person

Actually the buss work is not regularly because a lot indonesian people has own vehicle so the local transport work depends on how many people availble on the buss, if they feel the buss are full of pasengers and they go.

Bali To Ijen Crater Banyuwangi

~ Kuta to Ubung (Bali Bus Terminal = by taxi (30 minutes) ~ Ubung (Denpasar) – Gilimanuk (ferry port) = by small bus (4 hours) ~ Ferry Ship (Gilimanuk to Ketapang) = 1,5 hours ~ Ketapang to Kawah Ijen (Paltuding) , 1-2 hours)

If you plan to travel to Bali after visiting Ijen, do not let you fool by the minivan and bus drivers who will hail you at the ferry terminal. Some of them usually offer touring to get to Gilimanuk with costly price, that’s why we suggest you to do the tour with travel agency. It’s based on my custumers experienced that use the public transports, some of the bad people trick them by giving expensive price for the trip to Ijen.

It’s easy to get a bus to Banyuwangi from Bali you only stopped three or four times along the way. The problems arrive in Banyuwangi as there are not many public transport available at noon to evening. The only way to get the Paltuding (Basecamp of Ijen) by Ojek (scooter taxi), where it is also not many available. But you do not worry about it, you may ask to local people.

The scooter taxi usualy will take you to the town of Jambu (The village near Kawah Ijen). The next problem in Jambu Village because there are no public transport to kawah ijen from there, because The road up to Kawah Ijen is bad and there are some places where you have to get off the motorcycle. If anyone goes through the same experience, do not go to Jambu. We suggest you to clearly clarify and make sure that the ojek will take you until paltuding not Jambu, it because not many local people around there could speak english well.

~ Banyuwangi to Jambu (17 km) ~ Jambu to Paltuding (17 Km) ~ Climb to Ijen Summit (3 Km)

Bali Ijen Crater Tour Feedback

Thanks for your help in organizing the Bali Ijen crater tour – everything ran very smoothly, and it was great to see crater sulfur sparkles. Our guide, Mario was great – although there was confusion over whether he was supposed to climb with us or whether we would be meeting a local guide for the climb. We were under the impression there would be a local guide showing us the best places on Ijen blue fire sparkles and sunrise watching. Luckily there were lots of tourists climbing so we followed their lead. Thanks again, Chloe.

Ijen Volcano Tour from Bali 1 Day | Ijen crater tour

Ijen Volcano Tour is probably one of my favorite tourist destinations for first-time visitors in Indonesia. The landscape is out of this world. One of the highlights of visiting Ijen is the blue flames, which you can only see at night.

The flames appear at the base of the Ijen crater and are caused by sulphuric gas catching fire . You can find an article about the flames in National Geographic here . Ijen Volcano is a Stratovolcano mountain which is located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen) has the highest peak of 2.799 meters above sea level.

ijen Volcano tour from bali 1 Day | Ijen crater tour

I’ve been the iconic places, even the favorite destination for tourists. Why? Because we assure you that Ijen Crater is the best choice for their vacations. Ijen Crater has all the wonderful things, that you want to see it.

The turquoise Lake, that’s what the tourist called Ijen Crater , One of the Instagramable places to take some photos. Ijen Crater Lake has a depth of 200 meters, and the crater has a high acidity close to zero.

So that could dissolve the human body quickly. When we see the crater lake from the peak of Ijen Mountain you will see the oldest dam of Ijen Crater. The Ijen Crater Dam has built when in the Dutch era. It functions to avoid the overflow of crater water. You can also see the best sunrise ever and the rare phenomenon which is only two in the world, after Iceland, it is called “BLUE FIRE”.

The blue fire has been there a few hundred years ago or maybe a thousand years ago. And yet, the existence was known around 1950. Blue fire formed because the solfatara hole with sufficient hot temperature (600 degrees Celcius) is burning the closest sulfurs.

Well, how we can go On the Ijen Volcano tour starting from Bali?

Starting from Denpasar Airport, Kuta, Ubud, Sanur, or any other place in Bali, our English-speaking driver will pick you up at 6 pm , with an AC vehicle to bring you to the most western part of Bali in Gilimanuk (Ferry terminal to Java). The trip takes about 4 hours.

Once in Gilimanuk, the ferry ride takes 1 hour to reach Ketapang (Banyuwangi ferry terminal). Remember that Java is h-1 compared to Bali.

From there, at around 12:00 am, we will bring you to the Paltuding rest area (1-1,5 hours). The road offers a number of magic landscapes in the middle of rice fields, small villages, and one one the last primary tropical rainforest left on Java island rounded by numerous volcanoes. You will mainly enjoy those sceneries on the way back during the daytime.

From Paltuding Area, at around 1:30 am, you will start hiking to Ijen Crater . It takes about 1:30 -1:45 minutes for the 3km hike following a gentle slope and slightly uphill to reach the summit.

The path is pretty well maintained in good condition and other views of rounding volcanoes and luxurious vegetation will accompany your journey. From the crater rim, providing you gas mask, we will bring you down to see the blue fire right on the edge of the acidic lake (temperature of the lake: +- 40°c; Ph: 0,5; max depth:+-200m).

The laker is also the source for the river Banyupahit, resulting in highly acidic and metal-enriched river water which has a significant detrimental effect on the downstream river ecosystem.

Hike to go down (+- 45mins, rocky).

After enjoying the spectacular Blue Fire, we go back to the crater rim to enjoy the sunrise over the entire volcanic area.

The hike to go down takes about 45mins – 1h. The driver will pick you up in Paltuding to go to have breakfast. After breakfast, we continue our journey to the Ketapang ferry terminal to cross to Bali (ferry +-1h).

Once in Bali, it takes about 4-5 hours to reach Denpasar, Ubud, Kuta, or Sanur. (Keep in mind that Bali is H+1 compared to Java time). ARRIVAL at your final destination at 3-4 pm

But she then started walking backward to inch closer — then accidentally stepped on her long clothing, tripped and fell into the mouth of volcano.

A TOURIST has died after plunging 250 feet into an active volcano as she posed on the crater's rim.

The victim, 31-year-old Chinese national Huang Lihong, tumbled into the Ijen Crater in Banyuwangi, Indonesia , as her horrified husband took a picture.

She stumbled and fell on April 20 after catching her clothing on the rock face and disappeared down the crater, it is understood.

She and her husband Zhang Yong had climbed the slope with a local guide so they could watch the sunrise from the volcano's rim, local media reports.

But as Lihong posed for the snaps she tripped and ended up tumbling backwards over the edge.

One photo released after the fall shows Lihong posing on what appears to be the rim of the volcano with one leg raised and whisps of steam and sulphur gas rising behind her.

She fell 75 metres (250 feet) into the mouth of the volcano and it took rescuers more than two hours to retrieve her body, according to local reports.

Dwi Putro Sugiarto, the head of the Department of Conservation for the Banyuwangi region, told local media that her fall was an accident and that tourists should always remain safe while scaling Mount Ijen.

Her body is scheduled to be transported to Bali before it is taken by air back to China, reports say.

Mount Ijen is part of a group of volcanoes on the border between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso in East Java.

A tourist has tragically died after falling 250ft into a crater of an active volcano in Indonesia.

31-year-old Chinese national Huang Lihong fell into the Ijen Crater in Banyuwangi, according to local media reports.

On Saturday (20 April), she and her husband , Zhang Yong, had apparently tried to climb the steep slope of Mount Ijen with a local tour guide so they could watch a remarkable sunrise from the volcano's rim.

With such a beautiful spectacle on display, Huang decided to pose for some photos.

However, as she was preparing for the perfect snap, she reportedly got her skirt caught.

This caused her to stumble to the point where she ended up tumbling backwards over the edge into the crater in front of her horrified husband.

One photograph released following the incident shows Huang posing for a snap with one leg raised as she stood at the rim of the volcano , as clouds of steam and sulphur gas rose behind her.

Local media have since reported that she fell 250 feet into the mouth of the volcano, with it taking rescuers more than two hours to retrieve her body.

Dwi Putro Sugiarto, the head of the Department of Conservation for the Banyuwangi region, has since told reporters that the incident was an accident and that tourists should always remain safe while visiting Mount Ijen.

The tourist's body is scheduled to be transported to Bali before it is taken by air back to China.

Mount Ijen is found on the border between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso in East Java, where it lines up amongst a group of volcanoes.

Huang has tragically died. (Newsflash)

These volcanoes are known for their blue fire, an effect created by sulphuric gas emanating from the crater and igniting and burning.

In the summer of 2022, a fellow tourist fell into the crater of Mount Vesuvius after taking a selfie on a forbidden route.

Italian media reported at the time that the then 23-year-old and his family from the US ignored signage and walked on an out-of-bounds path.

And the man decided to take a selfie on this prohibited route, but it didn't exactly go to plan.

As he was standing at the summit of the iconic Naples landmark, he dropped his phone, ultimately falling as he tried to retrieve it.

Police, a rescue helicopter and Vesuvius guides had to be called out after the man dropped several metres.

He was treated in hospital for cuts and bruises to his arms and back.

A tourist tragically died after tumbling into an active volcano while trying to take photos.

Chinese national Huang Lihong fell down the famous Ijen Crater in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, plunging 250 feet (76.2m) to her death in front of her shocked husband .

The incident took place on Saturday 20 April, when Huang stumbled in the middle of taking photos, with her clothing being caught on the rockface before disappearing down the gaping crater.

Huang Lihong sadly died after following down the crater. (Newsflash)

According to local news outlets, the couple climbed up the slope with the assistance of a local guide so they could see the scenic sunrise from the volcano's rim, and to snap some photos of the view.

During the photoshoot, she tumbled backwards over the edge of the slope, with one photo revealing that Huang was posing on the rim with a leg up on a rock, with steam and sulphur gas rising behind her.

The Ijen volcano complex is situated in East Java, Indonesia, and is known for its blue fire, acidic crater lake and labour-intensive sulphur mining.

These, among other things, make it a tourist hotspot for those willing to make the trek up.

Its active crater has a diameter of 722 metres (2,369 feet) with a surface area of 0.41 square km (0.16 square miles) and a depth of 200 metres (660 feet) at its deepest point.

Following Huang's fall into the mouth of the volcano, rescuers took over two hours to retrieve her body and transport it out of the danger zone.

The crater is 200m deep. (Newsflash)

The head of the Department of Conservation for the Banyuwangi region, Dwi Putro Sugiarto spoke to the local media about the accident.

He stated that the fall was an accident, urging tourists to remain safe when scaling the dangerous Mount Ijen.

Local media outlets also reported that her body is being transported to Bali first, before being taken back to China by air.

The wider area is known as the Ijen Geopark, which stretches across the region, specifically the Mount Ijen area, Pulau Merah Beach, and Alas Purwo National Park.

In 2023, it became part of UNESCO Global Geoparks, as it features numerous geological biological and cultural sites.

  • She fell while walking backwards to pose for photos
  • Body retrieved after two-hour operation

A 31-year-old Chinese tourist has died after falling 250 feet onto an active volcano in Indonesia. The incident happened when the woman, Huang Lihong (31), and her husband Zhang Yong, 32, were on a guided tour to Ijen - a volcano park in East Java - to watch its popular "blue fire" phenomenon, a report in The New York Post said.

While posing to get a photo, Lihong lost her balance and fell into the volcano. Her body was retrieved by rescuers after an operation of nearly two hours.

Local tour guides said Lihong initially maintained a safe distance from the edge of the live volcano but then started walking backwards while posing for the photos.

She then accidentally stepped on her clothing, tripped and fell into the mouth of the volcano, the tour guides said.
