Romania Tours

We are Vlad and Zoe Trestian – the owners and managers of Balkan Trails. Vlad is Romanian, Zoe is Bulgarian – we have first hand, local knowledge of the countries our tours explore.

We have been working in the travel industry in Eastern Europe since the late 1990s. In 2009, we decided to set up Balkan Trails as a family-owned and managed tour operator company. When trusting us with your travel experience, you will be dealing directly with one of us. Zoe or Vlad will be your single point of contact, so you’re always talking to an expert who has an overview of all details related to your tour.

We understand traveling is personal and individual, and no two travelers are alike. That is why the majority of our Bulgaria and Romania tours are based on customized itineraries. Your tour is exactly that: YOURS. Just let us know when you’d like to arrive and depart, what your interests are, the type of hotels you prefer, and we’ll take care of the rest.

We work with a small number of hand-picked, licensed guides. They all have solid experience and speak excellent English. During your time with them, you will get an insider’s perspective on the country, its people, and its culture. They are also the ones who will help you interact with locals – meeting locals is key to truly understanding a country.

Being a small, family-run business and working with a small number of carefully selected guides, also means we are only able to manage a limited number of Balkan tours each year. And that’s OK. Our focus is not organizing lots of “just OK” tours. We are here to create memorable travel experiences. And those do come in limited numbers.

Get in touch today. We’re really looking forward to showing you our part of the world.

The 9th day of the Balkans tour will start with a scenic drive along the Montenegrin coast until we set apart to hills to enter Albania . This country which was for a long period behind the “iron curtain” for plenty of travelers is still considered for a deeply isolated and conservative society, but you’ll be surprised. First stop in Albania, after the border, will be the town Skadar (Shkodra) and its historic citadel. Further we’ll take you to lunch in Albanian outback to a farm  where they produce all the food domestically. Next stop is again historic, the Kruja Castle , which symbolizes resistance of Albanian people with its medieval ruler Skender Bey against Ottomans. Finally the drive goes straight to Tirana .

Your Tirana accommodation is Hotel Brilant Antik**** (two nights) .  Rest of the day you have for yourself to relax or to soak in the vibrant night life of Albania’s capital.

10th Day – Tirana Vibes

In the morning you’ll meet your local guide who will take you on a city tour around Tirana. You’ll learn from the guide about how life was under the regime of Enver Hoxha , how it was during the period of transition and how life is in modern day Albania. After a tour you’ll meet #YourSerbiaHost again and he’ll take you to lunch at a traditional Albanian restaurant to try their cuisine, because what is worth travelling to a country if you don’t eat like a local. Rest of the day after lunch you have free time for your own plans.

11th Day – From Tirana to Ohrid

Day eleven is scheduled for leaving Albania and for meeting another former Yugoslavian republic, North Macedonia . Country with a disputed name, but with great nature, history and on top of it all, great people. A drive through Albanian mountains will give you an idea how this country managed to be isolated for so long. After you cross one of those you’ll enter North Macedonia and reach the beautiful Monastery St. Naum on the shores of the lake Ohrid.

After monastery and lunch in a nearby restaurant we’ll take you to the other side of the lake, to the town Ohrid. Here you’ll check in to Hotel City Palace**** which will be your accommodation for the next two nights.

12th Day – Ohrid and the Vicinity

This day is reserved for exploration of old town Ohrid and village Vevčani , located half an hour drive from Ohrid. First thing to visit is Samuilo’s Fortress , the main landmark of Ohrid. Further on the itinerary are old sites and churches scattered around the hill above modern Ohrid. When we finish with this part of the day we’ll take you to Vevčani, a village unknown to the majority of tourists. This place has its charms and interesting people, as well as pure water and intact nature. You’ll hear a story about their declaration of independence in the ’90s and establishing local currency. You’ll have lunch here on the springs of pure mountain water. After lunch we’ll get you back to Ohrid.

Tips and recommendations about what to try in Ohrid restaurants will be provided.

13th day – Matka Canyon and Skopje

On the day ahead you’ll visit one very special place on the way to Skopje , the Matka Canyon , a beautiful canyon of river Treska. You’ll take a short boat ride to a cave which holds cave jewelry and a population of bats. After a boat ride you’ll have lunch in a local restaurant right in the canyon, views from its terrace are the right spot to relax and enjoy local dishes. After lunch you’ll continue to Skopje which is only 30 minutes away.

Upon check-in to Hotel Aleksandar Square**** , located on the main city square, we suggest a walk around the city center to explore Skopje’s disputed architecture. Rest of the evening you have free time.

Balkan Discovery (4 Star Hotels) Tour

Balkan Discovery (4 Star Hotels)

I went on this trip in mid October and surprisingly the weather was great enough for swimming. Simon was my guide with Chris as our bus driver. Simon was very informative and extremely nice throughout the whole trip. I really felt like I received a great introduction to the land and its people. Chris made sure we took comfort breaks every couple to few hours so that everyone had a chance to regroup. The first couple of days were short as it required some long hours of driving, but it was all worth it. Also, I had the pleasure of meeting wonderful travelers from university students to grandparents, though the group skewed to the former. Pay for all the extra excursions, especially the nature ones!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days Tour

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Excellent trips around the Balkans. Personal, adapted to my wants with fewer shops and few patron saints, but more castles, battles and genocide. Eri and Sokol were excellent hosts, careful drivers and I cannot fault them in the slightest. My one reservation was the hotels rooms. They were in the 2* to 3* range. The hotel in Delphi was a disaster. They insulted Eri and of a morning there was no hot water. They insisted I pay direct and complained the booking was from Albania but my passport Australian. (I understand this hotel is no longer on the schedule.) The hotel and room in Kotor were excellent but others small. Great trip and really interesting recent history.

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Hey guys it was just perfect! Everything! From organization to beautiful places that we visited. I was all around the world but Albania is something else. Wine, sea, food, local people, history, cities - perfection! The places where we stayed were beautiful and clean and tour guide was lovely, talkative and kind. Recommendation to everybody!

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

Excellent tour with fantastic tour guide (Noddy). It's a tour aimed at younger (under 40) travellers, so the accommodation is mainly hostels and the pace is pretty fast but we still managed to spend a reasonable amount of time in each place. There was a good balance of history/culture and activities, and there is a lot of flexibility with the optional activities and free time to spend more or less time at the beach, museums, etc. Highly recommended as an introduction to the Balkans!

Western Balkans Uncovered Tour

Western Balkans Uncovered

I did not know what to expect and was pleased to find it all very interesting and different from our North American standards. The kindness of the people toward tourists was wonderful to experience especially given the difficult history all of the countries visited had gone through. Food and drink were very good.

Balkan Adventure (14 Days) Tour

Balkan Adventure (14 Days)

An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP Tour

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP

I have just completed the 7 countries in 14 days tour with Victor Tours. There was a great mix of being shown the important tourist spots and giving you some free time to explore for yourself. The tour guide Theodor was a breath of fresh air. He was inciteful, helpful and knowledgeable during the tour. He answered all questions honestly, especially around some sensitive subjects. We had breakfast at all the hotels that was substantial. The accommodation, because we moved around ranged from tremendous to very good. Not one hotel was lacking. It has given me an improved understanding and knowledge of the area, their problems both past and present. The tour gives you a great start on all the 7 countries and if you want to explore them more you then have a starting point. My favorite countries were Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia, which I will be exploring further. Alexander and his team, from Victor Tours was tremendous in his assistance both before the tour and during it. There were no 'hick ups' at all. I would recommend Victor Tours and this particular tour to anyone who want to travel to these countries. Thanks again Alexander and Theodor for the great memories.

Balkan Dreams end Bulgaria Tour

Balkan Dreams end Bulgaria

Very good experience overall. Most hotels were very pleasant, with the exception on the one in Greece: I had to requests light bulbs and the shower was a hose without a shower head. Not enough water flow to wash my hair, and Macedonia, where the bed lacked a "foot", the bed was sideways, but there was no available rooms to be moved to. I would recommend skipping the first town in Kosovo to allow more time in Sarajevo. We arrived there at night, might have been nice to see it with some day light. Last, Rumi the tour guide is absolutely fantastic. She elevated the experience with her friendliness and knowledge. Best tour guide ever!

Dubrovnik to Athens: Beachfronts & Fortresses

This trip was absolutely amazing! And it was all due to our amazing guide - he was, hands down, the most knowledgeable and charismatic tour guide a person could have dreamed up! He not only made it possible for our diverse group to get to know one another, he introduced us to experiences, places and persons that a local would only know. He was meticulously organized down to a "T", arranged for upgrades at his own expense, and left the group with little to no worries about where/what would be done next. If I could book tours with this guide solely - I would. In fact, for my next adventure I do plan on booking with G Adventures and requesting his tour.

Balkan Kaleidoscope Tour

Balkan Kaleidoscope

The itinerary and experience exceeded our expectations. Georgi and Bobby took great care of us and made sure we were always happy and safe!

What people love about Balkans Tours

My experience with this tour was great. The hotels were tops. Our tour guide very attentive and knowledgeable. Our bus driver, Barry, was the best. The itinerary is very busy and a bit tight. I would suggest spending less time at Dubrovnik and more at Kotor. Our pre-fix meals were good, but maybe offer a choice of two or three entrees? Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip!
Intense as expected. The hotels were good and centrally located for the most part. Tour guides Dusan in Northern balkan countries and then Vasso for the last Greece part were young, knowledgeable, energetic, friendly, easy going and took care of every detail for us
Fast paced, and enjoyable. Ten countries in sixteen days, organized to the point it was a pleasure to experience. Our guide Rogan kept us informed and gave great background information of things we were about to experience. I will relive this adventure many times in my head.

CROATIA PRIVATE TOURS REVIEWS

Awesome, fanstatic view of the nature, more than 5 services that provided ........everything were perfect and excellent

Recently my parents, friend and I went on a tour of Croatia using this company. It was recommended by a friend. It was a 9-day trip (29th October 2022 till 06th November 2022) starting from Zagreb, Varazdin &Trakoscan tour, Istria, Plitvice lakes, Sibenik, Split, Trogir, Montenegro, and Dubrovnik. The boss, Mr. Aleksandar, provided us with a Mercedes V-Class Avantgarde and a great driver during our tour. The itinerary was great, and not too hectic. The hotels were centrally located and near restaurants and all the happening places. We could easily walk around these places even late at night and it was very safe. The tour guides provided in every city were very knowledgeable and gave us interesting facts about the places. Thank you for the awesome tour guides Ivana, Mirjana, Frane, Tihomir, and Bojan. Mr. Kruno, our driver, during the 9 days tour, was a great driver always punctual with a warm smile. My dad admired his patience and careful driving skills. Mr. Aleksandar kept track of our journey and always enquired about our situations. He even recommended some good traditional food at the restaurant called Peka in Dubrovnik, which we are grateful for, and Mr. Kruno took us there even though it was after his working hours. The whole tour was awesome, without any hitch, and it was beyond our expectations. Everything was superb and no words can describe the beautiful places that we visited, the fascinating natural scenery of the sea, mountains, historical places, and buildings. We never knew Croatia was such a beautiful country. We highly recommend to all our friends out there to use this company. The services provided are definitely more than 5 stars.

Buenas noches.

Muchas gracias

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
