Glass Bottom Boat Tours See the Great Barrier Reef without getting wet!

Map of the Great Barrier Reef

Glass bottom boat tours allow passengers to admire the underwater beauty of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef without touching a drop of water. Although some glass bottom boats have sections of real glass beneath the waterline, other boats use another form of transparent material instead.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Most glass bottom boats are designed to accommodate as many passengers as possible while still allowing all passengers to look down and enjoy clear views of the tropical sea creatures and coral of the Great Barrier Reef .

Popular Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Some glass bottom boats also come with tour guides who provide detailed descriptions of the different types of coral and marine life in the Great Barrier Reef.

The jetty at Green Island is a popular departure point for glass bottom boats because its access ramp is so easy to use. Green Island’s glass-bottom boat prototype dates from the 1930s and is commonly used by many more boat companies today.

Cairns , the largest city in northeastern Australia, plays host to the largest number of companies offering glass bottom boat tours. However, these tours are also available from one company in Mission Beach and three more companies in Port Douglas .

Some glass bottom boat tours also include scuba diving or snorkelling excursions for those wishing to get even closer to the Great Barrier Reef’s coral and marine creatures. Night glass bottom boat tours are another popular option thanks to special ultraviolet lights that allow visitors to see the coral polyps awaken after dark.

Benefits of Taking a Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Taking a glass bottom boat tour is an amazing way to explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef without risking your safety or the environment. It’s also an ideal option for people who are unable or unwilling to go scuba diving or snorkelling. Those with mobility issues will find glass bottom boats provide easy access and allow them to experience the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, the underwater world and marine life, stunning tropical fish, and diverse coral reef in a safe and comfortable way.

A glass bottom boat tour is also more affordable than many other forms of reef exploration, making them an ideal option for people on a budget. And because glass bottom boats don’t disturb the delicate ecosystem of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, you can be sure you’re helping to protect one of the world’s most amazing natural wonders, and the soft coral reef.

Finally, a glass bottom boat tour provides spectacular views of the reef that can be enjoyed from a comfortable seat on the boat. Whether you want to spot sea turtles, stingrays or beautiful coral formations, there’s no better way.

Great Barrier Reef Departure Points

The most popular departure point for glass bottom boats is Green Island. This small island, located near Cairns in Queensland, is the traditional starting point for a variety of reef exploration activities, including scuba diving and snorkelling.

Cairns is another popular destination for glass bottom boat tours. There are a number of companies offering tours from Cairns, some of which also offer special excursions to the outer Great Barrier Reef.

Mission Beach is home to one company offering glass bottom boat cruises, Airlie Beach also offer a great trip on a glass bottom boat, as well as Port Douglas’ three companies make it a popular destination for reef exploration as well.

Additional Activities Available on Tour

In addition to seeing the reef up close, some glass bottom boat trips also offer additional activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling. These activities allow passengers to get even closer to the marine life while still enjoying the safety of a glass-bottomed boat.

Glass Bottom Boat Alternatives

For those looking for an alternative to the glass bottom boat tour, snorkelling trips are available in many areas along the Great Barrier Reef. These trips allow passengers to explore the soft corals in shallow waters and often come with experienced guides who can provide interesting facts about the diverse marine life.

Semi submersible cruises are also available in some areas, allowing passengers to stay dry while viewing the reef below. These tours are ideal for those who want to experience the underwater world without having to get in the water.

Nighttime Tours

Night tours are another popular option on many glass bottom boats. With the help of special ultraviolet lights, passengers can experience the Great Barrier Reef’s marine life coming to life after dark. On some tours, passengers also have the option of swimming with bioluminescent creatures such as jellyfish and sea stars.

Tips for booking the best Glass Bottom Boat Tour

When booking a glass bottom boat tour, it’s important to consider the type of experience you would like. Choose a company that offers tours specifically tailored to your needs and preferences. Make sure they offer safety briefings and provide all necessary equipment for passengers before embarking on their journey.

view from glass bottom boat

No matter which type of tour you choose, it’s important to consider your safety when going on a glass bottom boat ride. All companies offering these tours must adhere to strict safety and environmental guidelines. Be sure to check with the company you’re considering booking with to ensure your tour meets all safety requirements.

Once you have booked your glass bottom cruise, make sure to arrive early so you have time to register and get settled. It’s also important to dress appropriately – beachwear is generally appropriate.

Finally, keep your camera handy! You never know when you will spot amazing sea turtles or manta rays, or a spectacular view of nature at the bottom of the reef. With glass bottom boats, you will be sure to create lasting memories of your time exploring Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

No matter where you choose to depart from, a glass bottom boat tour is the perfect way to explore Australia’s pristine Great Barrier Reef without getting wet. These trips are very popular as they are suitable for everyone from kids of all ages to grandparents, so don’t miss out on this unique opportunity and book a trip today!

This tour was excellent. The skipper and crew worked seamlessly through some rough weather to ensure we had the best opportunity to view the reef with comfortable, clean, and safe accomodations onboard. Exceeded all of my expectations, particularly the chance to discover dive with Christine and the delicious food prepared by Zoe and Joost, who also kept us entertained with his fantastic music selection between dives. Good vibes from everyone working with us really made the trip special!

Oz East Coast Adventure 28 Days Tour

Oz East Coast Adventure 28 Days

Amazing 4 weeks in Oz! The organization of the hostel check-ins and the Greyhound rides were very good. Shannon was the most lovely tour leader and always ready to help with everything, which made the trip even better. Also the time we spent in each place felt just right. Only thing I would change about the itinerary are a bit more activities and less full free days. But overall it was a great experience!

Best of the Coast - Sydney to Cairns 16 Day Flashpacker Adventure Tour

I actually only did the Brisbane to cairns portion of this tour, but had others in our group who completed the entire thing. They pack so much fun times into for my group only a week, but I never felt rushed at any of the locations. They always gave us ample time to see everything and enjoy the sites. From Fraser Island, to the Whitsundays, the Atherton Tablelands, and a day on the Great Barrier Reef. As a small group tour your able to get close knit with everyone and meet many people from all around the world. Our tour guide Justin was amazing, so informative, full of energy, and one of the best tour guides making sure everyone had the best time. I’m fact one day we were supposed to be having a long driving day, and our bus broke, we waited at the hotel for some time, but Justin problem solved until he was able to find us another form of transportation. The included meals were great, and the locations Justin picked to give us as an option for dinners on our first night somewhere was always great food. I would highly recommend Via Travel to anyone, especially if you get Justin as a guide.

“ Definitely a must do when visiting North Queensland. The staff were excellent - all very experienced and informative. We were taken to 3 areas of Opal Reef. The staff were extremely tentative...added BONUS of a professional photographer onboard, who photographed us underwater! Monique via Tripadvisor
“ This 1/2 day snorkelling trip from Port Douglas could not have been better! During the 4-hour tour we learnt about the Low Isles, their creation, evolution and history. Customer Reviews

We had the best day on the reef with our 4 and 7 year old kids. The staff was fantastic. Highly recommend the whole experience.

We had a great time snorkeling the outer reef, nearly 1/2 price of other diving companies. Didgeridoo and Dance demonstrations were an added bonus thank you to the captain and crew.

A wonderful personal experience from beginning to end. The crew were lovely and worked hard all day for everyone on board.

I picked Dreamtime because I thought the indigenous touch would be a bit different and more interesting than other tours. There was nothing that I could complain about. I am so pleased I chose this trip, do yourself a favour and book it!

From the stories, history lessons, interactive staff to the stunning reef, i couldn’t have had a better day out on the reef.

This tour was the most relaxed and the most friendliest we have been on in the 10 days we stayed in Cairns. We absolutely loved it. The food was great and plenty of it.

Absolutely amazing! This brand new reef experience is the best one we’ve had in cairns – comfortable, modern, new boat and an energetic, happy, informative crew.

This was a wonderful experience. The staff were so friendly and knowledgable and the reef locations were excellent.

The whole operation was very professional and equally laid back. We felt like we had very personalised service and the crew was outstanding. This was the highlight of my trip to Australia.

Frequently asked questions.

Check in starts from 7:15am at the Down Under Dive counter located inside the Reef Fleet Terminal, 1 Spence Street, Cairns. The Evolution yacht is located at A Finger, Cairns Marlin Marina and departs at 8am sharp.

Enjoy over 5 hours at the reef snorkelling, diving and relaxing at 2 outer reef sites.

Evolution has access to 12 exclusive moorings at six different reef spots. The locations you go to are chosen each day depending on weather conditions and water clarity to ensure the best experience for all activities. Generally, Evolution will travel to one of the two outer reef locations in the morning (Norman Reef or Saxon Reef), then travel to North Hastings Reef in the afternoon where they also conduct Helicopter Flights and the Semi-Submersible tour.

If you’re prone to seasickness, it’s advisable to take something around 20 minutes prior to boarding the boat. As Evolution is a catamaran, it is a more stable vessel in choppy weather compared to monohulls. You can purchase seasickness pills on the boat, but please note that tablets are a preventative and will not help if you are already feeling nauseous.

Evolution provides a delicious Aussie BBQ lunch including prawns, fish, steak, vegetarian option, vegan option and tropical salads. They can cater to guests with vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free diets - but you must advise reservations of your special dietary requirement at least 48 hours prior to travel. You are also welcome to bring your own snacks for morning and afternoon tea if you have any concerns regarding the options provided.

There are sharks in every ocean, but the ones you are most likely to encounter on the Great Barrier Reef are black and white tipped reef sharks. They are super timid creatures and pose no threat to humans. You should count yourself very lucky if you get to see one! Sightings of a reef shark is considered a good indication of a healthy reef and underwater ecosystem.

Evolution can accommodate guests with limited mobility, but it is advised to speak to staff when inquiring to ensure if the crew can meet your specific needs.

The 10-minute scenic helicopter flight departs from Hastings Reef private helicopter pontoon. You’ll fly over Hastings Reef and surrounding areas before arriving back to the pontoon where the Evolution crew will transfer you back to the yacht.

No, it doesn’t. Evolution is a beautiful 3 story luxury catamaran that moors on the outer reef while you enjoy the delights of the Great Barrier Reef.

The journey takes about 90 minutes to reach the Outer Reef location from Cairns. Evolution is one of the fastest boat trips to the Outer Reef giving you 5 hours of snorkelling and scuba diving at 2 Outer Reef Sites.

So what makes the Southern Barrier Reef so special? Many tourists visit the Northern portion of the reef off the coast of Ambergis Caye. The Southern Barrier is often less traveled so it is pristine, untouched, and quiet! Belizean Dreams divers have seen turtles, eagle rays, southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and even dolphins and manatees up close and personal.

This 2-tank dive is only 10 miles away via boat. It requires a beginners dive certification.

Turneffe Reef Atoll Dive

Turneffe Reef Atoll is the largest atoll in Belize, about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. Unlike the other atolls in Belize that are a collection of sandy cayes, Turneffe Atoll is made up of a series of mangrove islands, lagoons, and inlets covered in lush tropical vegetation. The healthy mangrove and lagoon habitats provide a pivotal nursery for a variety of species including fish, lobster, conch, and even saltwater crocodiles. There is no doubt that there is plenty to see while diving Turneffe Reef Atoll!

From shallow flats to shipwrecks and reef drop-offs, the multitude of dive sites on Turneffe provides something for every level of diver. One of the more popular dive sites, “The Elbow” is a dramatic reef drop-off featuring schools of jacks, groupers, and snappers with visibility at about 100 feet.

This 3-tank dive trip is the most northeast of the three atolls. This dive can be done with either a beginners or advanced certification, depending on the depth.

For those interested in snorkeling, the Turneffe Reef Atoll Tour can also be offered as a Snorkeling Tour.

Glover's Reef Atoll Dive

Glover’s Reef is the southernmost atoll in Belize and is a protected marine reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although this is the smallest atoll, just 20 miles long, it boasts a reef that is over 50 miles long around its edge. This reef is made up of a variety of coral, rocky patches, and small cayes filled with spectacular marine life.

This atoll is surrounded by deep drop-off’s from the reefs edge, including the Long Caye Wall drop-off which starts at 25 feet and then descends into an abyss over 6,000 feet deep with visibility at about 100 feet. The 20 Best Things to Do in Belize, From Barrier Reef Excursions to Cave Tours

Get to know Belize with these suggestions from locals.

Comprised of more than 400 islands and nearly 9,000 square miles of mainland, Belize is home to rainforests, jungles, mountains, rivers, an extensive cave system, and many well-preserved ancient Maya ruins. Adventures on both land and sea make Belize a popular destination, and its beaches and resorts are terrific for visitors who simply want to relax and enjoy the tropical climate .

To better understand the variety of ways travelers might get to know Belize, we gathered suggestions from local experts, including Patricia Johnson, head of trip design at Absolute Belize (and a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor ); David Benzaquen, general manager at Cayo Espanto ; and multiple team members with Alaia Belize . Anoushka Brandl, commercial director at Matachica Resort & Spa and Gaïa Riverlodge , and Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , shared their thoughts as well.

This list of things to do in Belize features ideas for everyone, from adventurers and history buffs to foodies and travelers looking to chill out on a lounge chair in the sun.

Tour the ancient city of Caracol.

One of the largest Maya sites in Belize, this ancient city covers about 25,000 acres in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. “You’ll marvel at the massive pyramids, detailed carvings, and remarkably well-preserved ancient artifacts,” says Johnson. “And you’ll learn fascinating details about ancient Maya culture, from daily life and religion to the ingenuity of their buildings.”

Snorkel or dive in the Great Blue Hole.

Located about three hours by boat off Ambergris Caye, the Great Blue Hole is a ring of coral encircling a huge underwater sinkhole. It’s home to colorful fish, shrimp, groupers, black tip and reef sharks, and other Caribbean marine life. Almost 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is accessible by dive boat tours.

Fly over the Great Blue Hole on a helicopter tour.

For a birds-eye view, stunning photos, and a thrilling experience, take flight over the Great Blue Hole. Several of our experts suggested this tour, and Benzaquen pointed out that Cayo Espanto “is home to a helipad and partners with a local service provider” for convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Enjoy traditional Belizean dishes.

“I suggest checking out local eateries like El Fogon in San Pedro’s downtown for traditional Belizean food,” says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. At Matachica Resort, Brandl tells T+L, “The Captain’s Table, a social gathering for eight guests, is a five-course dinner hosted by a different resort team member each time, a true local food experience.”

Explore the underground caves of Belize.

The ancient Maya believed that caves were entrances to the underworld, and in Belize, travelers can explore a number of them by hiking, canoeing, tubing, or swimming. The experience is “an adventure you will never forget,” according to Johnson. “One such sacred cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal , which contains a remarkable collection of artifacts and skeletal remains that have been preserved over the centuries.”

Join a tubing tour through the caves.

Offered by many local tour companies, cave tubing is a visitor favorite in Belize. After a drive to the rainforest, there’s a short hike before you hop on an inner tube to float along an underground river through the natural caves. A guide navigates the tubes, so no paddling is required. Lunch and transportation from a central meeting point are usually included.

Feast on your own fresh catch.

According to Woollam, “Reef fishing with a beach BBQ is fun and widely popular. The fishing is quick and easy, followed by lunch cooked over an open fire. Fresh seafood with Belizean spices, marinades, and condiments has been called the best lunch ever.” Describing a Cayo Espanto excursion, Benzaquen tells T+L, “After snorkeling, you catch your own fish, conch, or lobster, then you head to an uninhabited island beach where your guide will cook your 'catch of the day.’”

Hang with locals at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye.

The secret is out, and it’s the place for all-day music, food, and drinks. “Alaia’s guests often rent a golf cart to visit Secret Beach, where a day of relaxation, paddle boarding, and jet skiing awaits,” says Jesus Oba, concierge with Alaia Belize. Nearby, The Truck Stop features a beer garden, pool with swim-up bar, movie screen, games, and live music.

Learn all about chocolate.

The ancient Maya are said to have invented chocolate, and the annual Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates that history, local culture, and more. If you can't attend the May event, there are other options. Brandl suggests that visitors “Experience traditional Maya chocolate making at Ajaw in San Ignacio, then try the delectable chocolate brownie at Gaïa Riverlodge's Five Sisters Restaurant as a midday sweet treat.” In San Pedro, visit Belize Chocolate Company or Mahogany Chocolate .

Dive or snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

“Our most popular and sought-after tour is snorkeling or diving among the vibrant marine wildlife in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley," says Oba of Alaia Belize. "Our guests get a thrill out of swimming with nurse sharks, giant jackfish, blue tangs, and sea turtles. Some guests overcome their fear of getting in the water and come out wanting to go back in."

Experience the Belize Barrier Reef.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and second in size after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef extends more than 180 miles along the coast of Belize. Dive, snorkel, or do as Patricia Johnson suggests: “Hop on a sailing adventure and explore the vibrant marine life, colorful corals, and picture-perfect islands along the Belize Barrier Reef.” Woollam recommends “an easygoing sunset cruise along the reef," noting that most catamarans sail for about two hours.

Browse the shops in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye.

“As a local, one of my favorite things to do is explore the small shops, restaurants, and bars in San Pedro town," says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. "If you are an art buff or just looking to take home a souvenir, stroll downtown where small galleries, gift shops, and nifty nooks are in abundance."

Learn about the Garifuna people.

“Experience the culture of the Garifuna people by taking part in traditional drumming and dancing celebrations, sampling local dishes, and even staying in a Garifuna village," suggests Johnson of Absolute Belize. "You’ll come away from this experience with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the richness and friendliness of the Belizean people.” ToursByLocals offers a full-day Garifuna culture tour with convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Get dive certified.

“The proximity of the reef to the resorts makes getting dive certified an easy, safe, and fun experience," says Woollam. "If you have the desire to learn how to scuba dive, dive organizations like PADI have made classroom time a thing of the past. The theory portion of the certification is easily accessible online and can be done at home prior to arriving in Belize.”

Explore Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Located about two hours from San Ignacio in the Cayo District of south central Belize, this reserve is home to natural pools , caves, Maya ruins, and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in Central America, Thousand Foot Falls. Stay within the reserve and above Five Sisters Falls at Gaïa Riverlodge .

Meet new feathered friends.

Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the nearly 600 species of birds that live in Belize. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a great place for birdwatching , and Paradise Expeditions offers a variety of expert guided tours on the mainland and cayes.

Go on a fishing excursion.

On a half-day or full-day deep sea fishing adventure, you’ll be fishing for tuna, mackerel, marlins, and more. For a more casual day of fishing different spots along the reef, you can choose reef fishing in calmer seas. Ideal for families, the latter trip includes rum punch, snacks, sodas, and lunch. Turneffe Atoll is also a favorite fishing destination.

Get active in the Caribbean Sea.

Once you’ve relaxed on the beach and you’re ready to get wet, it’s time for your favorite activity on the water. “While Ambergris Caye is known for its proximity to the reef for snorkeling and diving, our guests also enjoy other adventurous water activities, including parasailing, windsurfing, or jet skiing, which our concierge is able to organize for them,” says Oba of Alaia Belize .

Visit Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.

More than 150 native animals make the 29-acre Belize Zoo their home. Most of the zoo’s residents are rehabilitated or rescued, and they include tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, toucans, macaws, coatimundi, and more. The fully accessible zoo offers VIP guided tours.

Browse and shop at San Ignacio Market.

Located in the Cayo District in western Belize, this market is set on the banks of the Macal River in San Ignacio. Open every day until 6 p.m., the market gives visitors a true glimpse into Belizean life, with handmade clothing, handicrafts, fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale by farmers and local craftsmen. Nearby San Ignacio town offers restaurants, bars, and shops.

The Great Barrier Reef’s Mass Bleaching Disaster: Can Ecotourism Help?

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 22nd, 2024 at 12:30 PM EDT

The Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its fifth coral bleaching event in eight years. Surprisingly, tour operators are crucial in providing the research the government needs to save the treasure.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

The Great Barrier Reef is in the midst of its worst mass bleaching event on record — a process in which warmer-than-usual water causes corals to expel their algae and turn white. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but it puts them under stress and makes them more susceptible to dying.

The tourism sector in the Great Barrier Reef has a long history of trying to lessen the harms of human impact. And in recent years, it has found that tourists can help.

The Reef brings more than 2 million tourists to the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia every year and it provides 60,000 jobs. The reef ecosystem boasts 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish, rare whale species and six of the world’s seven marine turtle species. It was designated a World Heritage site in 1981. However, the experience has been changing as the climate warms.

UNESCO, the UN body that oversees World Heritage sites, suggested in 2021 that the site be added to its “In Danger” list. It avoided that designation but will be evaluated again in the second half of 2024.

A History of Conservation Tourism

Tourism in the Great Barrier Reef has been conservation-focused for decades — the industry is closely regulated, caps are put on locations and tour operators, and in the past few years, tour operators have increasingly shifted their focus to educating a concerned audience about how climate change is impacting the reef.

“There have always been really conscious travelers,” said Mark Olsen, CEO of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, a non-governmental organization in Cairns, Australia. “But I think we’ve finally hit a mainstream audience, particularly travelers in their 20s and 30s who have grown up in a climate crisis and who understand that the natural world is under stress from human-induced effects.”

Passions of Paradise is among a handful of operators that offer a science tour in which tourists can dive and help monitor coral health and nurseries. Other groups have glass bottom boats that show tourists where the reef is struggling, where corals have been relocated to help them thrive, and where life is still vibrant.

One company, Reef Magic , offers visitors the chance to help replant corals outside the water. Replanting coral fragments is a highly regulated process, so most companies don’t have approval to let non-experts partake.

But Olsen says that the industry is seeing a demand for tourists who want to help, and they’re working to respond by offering hands-on activities.

Reef Research Relies on Tour Operators

Beyond tour activities, tour operators are crucial to the monitoring of the coral reef. Twenty-six tour operators are engaged in an initiative in which they provide surveys to the government. Between 2023 and 2024, they provided almost 3,500 reef health surveys to the government.

“There has always been strong involvement of tour operators in monitoring,” said Gianna Moscardo, a professor in Tropical Environments and Societies at James Cook University in Australia.

But this involvement wasn’t fully recognized until the pandemic, when the lack of tourists meant the region wasn’t collecting enough data on the reef. The Australian government realized this and started providing extra funding to reef operators to continue monitoring.

Now, the groups are not only invested in monitoring, but they’re also pulling out all the stops to limit their negative impact.

Between 2019 and 2021, at least six companies joined the Coral Nurture Initiative , a partnership between researchers and tour operators to conduct research and restore the reefs where they operate.

An operator called Tropic Wings plans to introduce a dozen battery-powered vehicles, becoming the sole tour operator in Australia with fully electric coaches. Another operator, Sailaway Port Douglas , is using the first electric glass-bottom boats.

“[Covid] was really a catalyst for more businesses to turn their enterprise toward conservation,” said Olsen.

Scientists don’t see this as an all-in-one fix for the corals — the fossil fuel emissions from international tourism are central to the problem. However, the travel industry in the Great Barrier Reef has been an essential part of how the region collects data, and the emerging partnerships could set a standard for similarly vulnerable ecosystems around the world.

“Tourism is what’s getting us the information that allows us to say, what’s the damage? What is the response? What corals are coming back?” said Olsen. “I think since December the tourism sector has collected 15,000 observations of the natural environment. It’s a proper partnership.”
