WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

5-stars

The trip lasts about 3 hrs – and it is awesome!! The staff is extremely knowledgeable and attentive. We saw orca and humpback whales – an amazing experience. This is an extremely professional organization with a group of very professional staff. Having sponsored a whale for many many years it was, for me, a dream come true – an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life – thank you Orca Spirit Adventures.

BEST EVER WHALE WATCHING TOUR!

Superlatives galore! No doubt aided by the most fabulous weather and a calm sea, today my family and I had an unforgettable day out sighting Orca, Seal, Sealion and Humpback with Greg and his crew. Beautiful scenery and the crew’s humour and local natural history knowledge really enhanced our experience.

FANTASTIC TRIP, GREAT WILDLIFE!

Fantastic trip – wasn’t just about the Orcas (although they were brilliant!), we saw humpback whale, sea otter, bald eagle, sea lions, harbour and elephant seals too. Staff onboard were really knowledgeable and the backdrop of the mountains in Washington State was just spectacular. All in all, a great trip and sensitively done.

Orcas (Killer Whales)

Members of the Dolphin family, Orcas (also known as Killer Whales) can measure nearly ten meters in length and weigh up to six tons. These apex predators can consume up to 500 lbs. of food every day! They use echolocation to hunt, emitting a series of clicks and whistles to determine the size, shape, speed, distance and direction of their prey. Females can live to see their hundredth birthdays. Humpback Whales

You thought Orcas were big? Humpback Whales can grow up to 16 meters long! Even just their blows can measure as high as three meters. Over the past 40 years since commercial whaling was banned in the North Pacific, Humpbacks have been making a comeback in the waters surrounding Vancouver Island. These long-distance migrators show great fidelity to their favourite feeding spots along the BC coast, typically appearing during the …

Minke Whales

Visible in our waters all year long, the Minke Whale is the smallest cetacean in the North Pacific, similar in size to Orcas. These generally solitary whales avoid boats but can be seen from a distance. Although they’re sometimes mistaken for Fin Whales in certain parts of the world, Minke Whales are much smaller. Everything about them – including their small, rarely-seen blow – is a little bit mysterious and …

The sea otter is a species on the west coast that is currently building its success story! The heaviest member of the weasel family was hunted almost to the point of eradication from 1741 to 1911. It was hunted for its luxurious pelt that can have about 100,000 hairs per square centimeter. In comparison, humans have about 100,000 hair follicles over their whole head! Harbour seals, also known as the common seal, is the most widely distributed pinniped in the world. Harbour seals sport a varying range of colours; however, all have a spotted coat. Unlike the larger sea lions, harbour seals do not have pronounced hip joints and so use a flopping motion when …

One of the loudest and smelliest marine mammals that passengers can come across on our tours is the Steller Sea Lion. Perhaps the most comical marine mammal that passengers may encounter on our tours is the California sea lion, due to its dog-like barking sounds. California sea lions range in colour from dark brown (males) to lighter, golden brown (females). Males can reach up to …

Northern Elephant Seals

Possibly the strangest looking marine mammal that can be seen on our tours is the Northern elephant seal. Its strangeness stems from its giant proboscis (nose) that is found on the males.  This enlarged nose is what gives them their common name, as it looks akin to the trunk of an elephant. WHAT GUESTS SAY ABOUT US

Fantastic experience.

This was the best whale watching excursion I have been on. The boat was clean and safe feeling. The ride was smooth and we saw 5 whales through out our trip. [Our Guide] was knowledgeable and friendly, was eager to answer questions and share information about the whale behaviours we were seeing. I highly recommend this tour and with the limited passengers they made social distancing easy on-board.

AAA+ Best Whale Watching Experience

Absolutely incredible tour! Would do it all again in a heart beat. We watched two (and potentially a third) pods of transient killer whales play non stop for about 45 minutes or so. We then turned around and there was a humpback whale behind us! We hung out with that guy for quite some time too. We also saw seals and copious amounts of eagles nesting.

[Our Guides], they were super friendly, safe, incredibly knowledgeable ([One of our Guides] being a marine biologist who studies humpback whales), and very down to earth, and our captain, Mike was also a gem!

I would highly recommend this tour!

Not to be missed!

A professional and efficient organisation that did everything they could to give us a special day. From pick up to drop off this was a wholly enjoyable experience made so by the lovely driver Trevor of the shuttle bus and the friendly staff at the office and on the boat.

We were so lucky to have seen around 16 killer whales, a couple of bald-headed eagles and loads of seals and sea lions.

Definitely a day to remember!

WOW!! This was an experience we will cherish forever!

Everyone at Vancouver Whale Watch was so hospitable from the moment we booked our tour. The office staff was so kind when checking us in and getting any additional outerwear and lunch/snacks that we may need. [Our tour guide] and [our Captain] were so knowledgeable about the different wildlife and lead us straight to an amazing sighting of a pod of 9 killer whales. This is truly a must do tour! And everyone at Vancouver Whale Watch is sure to make it an unforgettable memory!!

THANK YOU everyone at VWW!!

We can’t wait to do another tour with you!!

A dream come true!!

Such an amazing experience!!! We saw California sea lions, harbour seals, bald eagles, and stellar sea lions. AND OH RIGHT… SO MANY KILLER WHALES!!!! The boat was great!! The upper viewing deck was awesome for ultimate views! The glassed-in area kept us warm while still letting us see outside!!

Our guide was so knowledgeable and friendly!! We learned so much and she was super easy to talk to and answered all our questions! There were tons of reference guides on board that had really cool info in them!!

[Our Captain] was amazing! We felt very safe the entire time and he brought us close to the whales while still maintaining their safety as well!

All the staff in the office were very helpful and friendly!! All in all would 100 PERCENT recommend to anyone that wants to adventure out to see some wildlife and learn a ton about our incredible world!!

Wonderful time…

We had a wonderful time! We saw a family of Orcas, and the captain let us enjoy them for a long time. Our guide was very informative and knowledgeable. We also saw bald eagles, seals, sea lions and a humpback whale. We were out for almost 5 hours. It was great weather. Definitely worth the money. It was pretty perfect. Thanks so much!

Wow. Amazing! Thank you Vancouver Whale Watch for an amazing experience, you promised whales and you did not disappoint. We had to go a long way to find them but it was worth it. A pod of 6 orcas that we watched for about 30 minutes. [Our Guide] was fantastic and was able to identify the pod and tell us all about the family unit. Mummy was T65A, and I bought the postcard in the shop. She was so passionate about whale conservation and her depth of knowledge very impressive. Learnt a lot. Thank you. [Our Captain] was a great skipper and navigated us across very choppy water over to the islands. I can see why the orange suits are a necessity but think I was sat in the splash zone in the boat! A most exhilarating ride. We also saw seals and bald eagles. Would definitely recommend this company if you want to go find some whales.

OUR PROMISE

No request is too big or small for our team. if it matters to you, it matters to us. let us make your excursion a memory of a lifetime..

Best Whale Watching Tours in Victoria BC

The best whale watching in Victoria offers once-in-a-lifetime wildlife.

After all, how many cities can get you splashed by the thundering clap of a humpback whale jump?

Of course, these are all just empty promises unless we get the best whale watching tour in Victoria BC on the case.

Let’s take a look at some Victoria whale trips and get you started.

Best Whale Watching in Victoria: How To Take Killer Whale Tours of Victoria

An orca surface in front of a whale watching vessel, Victoria BC

Prince of Whales: Best Half-Day Whale Watching Tour

Vessel: Partially-enclosed Catamaran | Dates: Mar 29 – Nov 6

Our best Victoria whale watching tour overall is this 3+ hour fully-guided adventure aboard the Salish Sea Eclipse .

This purpose-built high-speed, luxury, custom-built catamaran carries up to 95 passengers in its warm and dry cabin.

This makes it the preferred Victoria whale tour for families and seniors .

The knowledgeable Prince of Whales crew also ensures you’ll be aboard a floating classroom .

victoria zodiac whale tour with humpback whale tail

Springtide: Cheapest Whale Watching Tour in Victoria

Vessel: Zodiac | Dates: Year round

If you’re traveling to Victoria on a budget, the cheapest Victoria whale tour rings in at “just” $139.00.

Of course, the advantage of these small zodiac boats is that you can get closer to the whales than with catamarans.

Do expect however to have a bit of a bumpier, wetter ride – though adrenaline-junkies will love this.

Even better? There are 5 daily departures so you’re bound to find the right time for you.

A Victoria whale watching tour at sunset

Prince of Whales: Best Sunset Whale Watching Tour in Victoria

Vessel: Partially-enclosed Catamaran | Dates: May-Oct

This top Victoria whale watching tour offers the same great experience as the half-day tour – but with a scenic twist .

Sure, on your 4-hour Victoria killer whale tour aboard the Salish Sea Eclipse, you’ll encounter the same fantastic marine mammals: orcas, humpbacks, greys and much more.

The difference? You’ll do so with a beautiful red-skied backdrop . A favourite with photographers , this orca tour of Victoria proves that the golden hour adds magic to an already epic experience.

5 star whale tour boat in victoria

5 Star Whales: Best Orca Tour in Victoria for Education

Vessel: Partially-enclosed Catamaran | Dates: Year round

The advantages of this Victoria whale watching tour are twofold: one, you get two expert naturalists on board that’ll teach you all about the local ecosystem and how whales fit into it.

Two, you’ve got a much smaller boat which means smaller crowds than usual .

Finally, at $158.00 I think this has best value of all the covered boats , making it a great option.

victoria whale watch tour with mountains and minke whale tail

Eagle Wing: Best Victoria Killer Whale Tour for Wildlife

Vessel: Open-air Zodiac | Dates: Year Round

Departing right from Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria, this killer whale tour is 30 minutes longer than average .

This means you’ll get plenty of time to explore extra marine life , be it bald eagles, sealions, seals, and much more.

The semi-covered catamaran is also the coolest boat in the Victoria whale watching fleet , if that counts for anything.

Prince of Whales: Best Zodiac Whale Tour in Victoria

These heart-pounding whale tours of Victoria are a bit of a hat-holder, and I’m telling you from experience.

First, you’ll zip up your Mustang suit and jump aboard a purpose-built zodiac . Then, once the captain opens up the Zodiac’s twin 300hp Mercury outboards , it’s time to let her rip!

Now, you’re on the hunt for orcas and humpbacks and other once-in-a-lifetime wildlife – as you feel the refreshing sea spray cool your face – at speeds of up to 55 km/h !

This is the only year-round Victoria whale watching tour , so if you’re visiting Victoria in winter , this is your jam.

Victoria Whale Watching Prices

So, how much does it cost to go whale watching in Victoria?

Below, I’ve got a handy graph of whale watching prices in Victoria, with some extra info on Victoria whale watching season.

Best of all? The majority of Victoria’s top killer whale tours have 5 star reviews:

Victoria Whale Watching Discounts

Sure, it’s not uncommon to find Victoria whale watching discounts online.

That said, I hate to report that these are ‘click farms’ with fake whale watching discount codes .

Basically, they get you to sign up for their email lists, and then they’ll spam you forever with offers!

As I mentioned in my other post, whale watching in Victoria is a once-in-a-lifetime experience: it can’t be put on sale like a sweater.

I’ve been running this site for seven years now, and Victoria orca tour prices go up every year , so it’ll never be cheaper than now!

Booking Victoria Whale Watching Tickets

Warning : For environmental reasons, whale watching tours of Victoria run at limited capacities (as little as 12 seats per). Ensure you book your tickets way in advance or it’s likely you’ll find your dates fully booked.

Getting Victoria whale tour tickets is as easy as shopping on Amazon – in fact, it’s probably even easier.

Below, I’ll take you through the steps using our top Victoria whale watching tour as an example.

The same is valid for all the whale tours here, but since it’s my #1 recommended Victoria killer whale tour I’ll choose this.

1. Follow the Link to Your Best Victoria Whale Tour of Choice

  • Head to the half-day Victoria whale watching tour portal on Viator
  • With this link, you’re booking at a NASDAQ company  (Tripadvisor) with a $3 billion market cap
  • Here, you get  book-now-pay-later whale tours of Victoria to help with your budget
  • You also get Viator’s  lowest price guarantee  to save money

2. Choose a Whale Tour Time

  • Click the green ‘Check Availability’ button on the product page

  • Select your time and click ‘Reserve Now & Pay Later’ or ‘Book Now’

FYI: If you choose ‘Reserve Now & Pay Later,’ you’ll have the option to pay for the tickets at any point up to 48 hours before the whale tour.

Whale viewing guidelines

Please understand that when we’re viewing the whales and other marine wildlife we’re guests in their home. It’s our responsibility to follow a strict set of viewing guidelines to respect their natural life processes. Yes, the whales can get close occasionally because they don’t know the rules, but they can also be far away in some instances.

  • We’re asked to maintain 200 metres in Canadian waters / 200 yards in American waters from Bigg’s killer whales; 100 metres for baleen whales such as humpback, minke and grey whales. We don’t view the endangered southern resident killer whales.
  • If the whales are along the San Juan Island shoreline then we maintain either 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile around Lime Kiln Park.
  • There are two vessel no-go zones near Pender and Saturna Islands.
  • For all other islands in the Salish Sea (over 419 of them!) we maintain at least 200 metres (220 yards) if whales are inshore of us.
  • Most of the time, the whales are out far enough from shore for us to view them at the minimum regulatory distances.
  • Bring a good camera with a telephoto lens!

What to expect on a whale watching tour in Victoria BC: Our experience

When it comes to whale watching, there’s no better spot than Victoria BC. With its stunning coastline and abundant wildlife, this area is sure to provide a memorable experience for any nature lover.

bc whale tours

Plus, the wide array of tour operators offer plenty of options for all kinds of travelers, from novice to experienced whale watchers. So when I booked my tour, I didn’t know what to expect, but I absolutely LOVED it!

I initially chose an afternoon tour in a covered boat or catamaran, but due to some cancelations, I later had to join a sunset zodiac tour! Both the whale watching tours departed from Victoria’s scenic inner harbor (downtown Victoria).

bc whale tours

Our tour was set for 3 hours, but we ended up spending 4 hours at sea sailing all the way to the San Juan Islands. Prior to the excursion, all the passengers (there were 5 of us) had to suit up (flotation suits) and were briefed on safety, and tour-related inputs were provided.

First half hour or so, we enjoyed the sailing and it was AMAZING – the speed, the wind, and the VIEWS ~ Once the captain spotted some areas, he slowed down and we all patiently waited….

bc whale tours

During this time the captain also shared details about whales and other marine life….he pointed whenever whales were sighted!

Before we left, we had a delightful show of 25 minutes where humpback whales were spouting and playing – what a beautiful sight it was!

bc whale tours

After this, we reached the inner harbor and were amazed to see the Parliament Building all lit up in its glory ~ it was a wonderful welcome back 🙂

Travel Tips for Victoria BC: FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose a whale-watching company that works for you and your schedule?

For the best and most responsible whale-watching experience in Victoria BC, you’ll want to head out on a tour with an experienced operator. All the tours listed in this guide will have a certified naturalist or marine biologist on board.

When choosing a tour, pay attention to the vessel used – some prefer covered boats with washrooms, drink options, and big decks to admire the sea and the whales. But some prefer adventure on a cool zodiac boat with full floatation suits.

Floatation suits at the Victoria Harbour

Although zodiacs are fun, their maximum passenger capacity is 12, and it has some limitations (mobility, people with back issues, etc.).

Also check the time of the tour, daytime is great, but sunset is magical!

Most tour operators also provide a whale sighting guarantee on their expeditions.

Vancouver’s surrounding waters are home to spectacular marine wildlife; such as Whales, Sea Lions, Otters, Harbor Seals, Bald Eagles, Dolphins, and other marine mammals.
