10 Top Beaches on the Maharashtra Konkan Coast

best beaches to visit in konkan

India's spectacular Konkan Coast starts south of Mumbai in Maharashtra and extends for more than 530 kilometers (330 miles) to Goa's border with Karnataka . The Konkan Coast in Maharashtra offers a bounty of beautiful beaches, which are among the most pristine in the country. Delightfully off the tourist trail, they are devoid of much commercial development and many are practically deserted. In this regard, the best time to visit is during January and February, when the weather is warm (not hot), and it's the low season for domestic tourism. During peak season (May school holidays, long weekends, and Indian festival season) water sports, camel rides, and horse cart rides proliferate on the popular beaches.

The beaches below, which are listed in order of proximity from Mumbai, are some of the most notable. Yet, you won't have to look far to find many lesser-known ones where there is not a soul in sight.

A memorable way to visit the beaches is to take a motorcycle road trip down the Konkan Coast.

Alibaug (also spelled Alibag) is a sought-after weekend destination for Mumbai residents. Many of the city's rich and famous own bungalows there. The town was established in the 17th century and has quite an extensive history. There are numerous old forts, churches, synagogues, and temples all waiting to be explored. The main beach at Alibaug isn't very appealing though, so most people head to the surrounding beaches. There are all kinds of accommodations ranging from resorts to simple guesthouses.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles).
  • Travel time: 1-1.5 hours by ferry, plus another 30-45 minutes from there. Driving time via National Highway 17/66 is around 3 hours.

A little further down the coast from Alibaug, Kashid is more isolated but growing in popularity. Its long, wide beach is lined with casuarina trees, snack stalls, and hammocks. Two of the major attractions in the area are Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary and Murud-Janjira Fort. While the beach is quite empty on weekdays, it receives an influx of visitors on weekends. Family owned cottages and guesthouses provide most of the accommodations as there are only a few hotels in the area.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 130 kilometers (81 miles).
  • Travel time: 1-1.5 hours by ferry, plus another 2 hours from there. Driving time via National Highway 17/66 is around 4 hours.

Diveager is a relatively unknown beach that's not too far from Mumbai. It's bordered by dense forestation. Make your way through it and you'll be greeted by a wide, clean beach with fine sand. Exotica Beach Resort is one of the top places to stay (it's a Maharashtra Tourism hotel, albeit privately managed, opposite the beach). Rainbow Holidays Cottage , in the thicket of coconut trees, is cheaper and also recommended. The town used to have a Ganesh temple with a golden idol but thieves stole the idol in 2012. It's since been replaced by a silver one.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 4.5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Shrivardhan

Sharell Cook

The standout feature of Shrivardhan beach is its thoughtfully developed promenade, with benches, rubbish bins, and decent public toilets. This is rare at beaches in India. The beach itself is nothing special though and the main drawback is that most of the accommodations are situated away from the beach.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 180 kilometers (111 miles).

Harihareshwar

Many people head to Harihareshwar, neighboring Shrivardhan, to visit its Shiva temple that houses an ancient Shiva linga . There's a pradakshina route around the temple, along the seashore. A rocky outcrop, accessible only during low tide, makes the beach particularly distinctive. The beach is actually split into two parts, north and south of the temple.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Murud and Karde

Murud and Karde form a long stretch of beach on the Konkan Coast. Hotels and homestays have mushroomed in the area, and there are many options for a beachfront stay. The main attraction is dolphin watching, especially during the winter when sightings are frequent. A little further north, Harnai is renowned for its massive daily fish market. Buy some seafood and get the locals to cook it up for you! Suvarnadurg Fort can also be visited.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 240 kilometers (150 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 6 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Ganpatipule, Malgund, and Aare Ware

Ganpatipule is famous for its Ganesh temple, located right on the beach. Due to the number of devotees it attracts, the beach is not pleasant for swimming or relaxing. If you're looking for a more serene stay, Malgund beach (just before before Ganpatipule) is a better option. Alternatively, there are a few pricey resorts located away from the temple as well. Untouched Aare Ware beach, south of Ganpatipule, is a must-visit beach. The sea views from the cliffs and road above it on either side are sensational.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 340 kilometers (211 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 8 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Tarkarli, Malvan, and Devbag

Getty Images/Elroy Serrao

If you're prepared to travel the distance, you'll be amply rewarded when you visit these beaches. The area is reminiscent of Goa decades ago before development set in. Its narrow, palm-fringed roads are lined with village homes, and locals can often be seen unhurriedly riding bicycles or walking to get around. The many beachfront homestays and guesthouses make it an appealing and inexpensive area to stay. Plus, the opulent new all-villa Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg provides a luxury accommodation option. The serenity of the beaches is preserved by the fact that water sports take place on a nearby island. Sindhudurg Fort is an attraction, along with the best snorkeling and scuba diving off the Indian mainland.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 10 hours via National Highway 17/66.

One of the most secluded beaches on Maharashtra's Konkan Coast, Bhogwe is situated where the Karli River meets the Arabian sea. Although it can be seen in the distance from Devbag beach, it still goes virtually unnoticed by visitors as its overshadowed by the popularity of Tarkarli. For an unforgettable stay amid nature, don't miss Maachli .

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 520 kilometers (323 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 11.5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Located only 30 minutes from the Goa border, semi-circular Vengurla beach is surrounded by lush hills. The road leading down to the beach provide dramatic vistas. Attractions in the area include a lighthouse, a jetty where fishermen return with the evening catch, and Vengurla Rocks (also known as Burnt Island) which is excellent for bird watching.

  • Travel time: Around 10.5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

In a time where all the possible beaches are flooded with crowds of people, this is certainly good news. What’s more? Taste the fantastic ethnic cuisine from the  tradi tional dhabas around and enjoy the local experience.

Awas beach, much like the Dive Agar beach, is secluded and offers absolute privacy. Even though the place kisses the azure blue sea , the land is smothered with tall trees and plants. Enjoy the fresh air while you sip on some coconut water under the shade of nature. One may worry about entering a secluded beach, but don’t worry. The locals are quite helpful and make sure that your stay in their home is friendly and secure. Shrivardhan beach

There are a lot of hotels surrounding the beach. Therefore, you can plan your stay at one of these places if you’re looking towards spending a weekend on the Konkan coast . Find a rich texture of black, gold and white sands at the Shrivardhan beach.

Every year, the endangered species of Olive Ridley Turtle come to this beach and lay their eggs every February to May. The festival organizers protect these eggs from animals as well as from people that help in conserving these species. Most of us relate to Konkan through Malvan, especially the Malvani cuisine. But, apart from the delicious cuisine, Malvan is also home to a beautiful Bhogave beach. Once you reach the beach, you will be mesmerized by the calmness and the beauty of the place, with luscious green mountains and white sand surrounding it. Moreover, there is a hill adjacent to the beach where you will find the ruins of Nivati fort on the top. And if you are adventurous and happen to venture to the top of the hill, you will witness the most magnificent view of the Arabian sea from there.

Tarkali Beach

Beginner's Guide To Planning A Kayaking Adventure In Goa

Whether you’re in North Goa or South Goa, novice kayakers can navigate the oceans and rivers with ease! Kayaking in Goa is an accessible adventure sport for everyone, and requires no prior experience.

Having never kayaked before, I decided to go on my first kayaking adventure in Goa . After consulting with kayak operators and learning the basics on the Goan River, I highly recommend this experience for adventure enthusiasts and water lovers. Goa’s pristine nature and calm waters make it exceptionally beginner-friendly.

With a kayak at your disposal, the possibilities are endless — the true beauty of kayaking lies in immersing yourself in nature and water. There are two main ways to kayak in Goa: through guided tours organised by certified operators, leading you along rivers and backwaters, or by renting kayaks to paddle on your own.

Cost of kayaking in Goa : A guided tour typically ranges from INR 1,500-2,000, while renting a kayak can be around INR 200-500 per hour, varying based on location and operator policies.

Kayaking along Goa’s rivers and backwaters offers glimpses of local wildlife and rich biodiversity . These waterways provide a relatively easier kayaking experience than the ocean, where waves and tides can be unpredictable. However, for those seeking a more physically challenging adventure, there are options to kayak in the ocean at certain spots.

Best places for kayaking in North Goa

Chapora river.

Chapora River

While Chapora gained fame among Bollywood fans for the iconic Dil Chahta Hai Chapora Fort scene, few travellers know that the Chapora River is a beautiful natural gem ideal for kayaking in Goa. Navigating the mangroves of the Chapora River on a kayak is an exciting adventure, with opportunities to spot rare species like kingfishers, egrets, ospreys and even crocodiles.

T+L recommends : I learned to kayak in the Chapora River through Konkan Explorers . During my kayaking journey, I even spotted some adorable otters in their natural habitat, swimming along with my kayak. I highly recommend beginners to try kayaking here.

Baga, North Goa

Kayaking at Baga Creek may not offer the most scenic views, but it provides an excellent experience for novices in North Goa. The river connecting the famous Baga Beach has become a kayaking spot, offering a journey through bustling commercial life. Visitors can rent kayaks and paddle on their own.

Bambolim Beach

Kayaking in Goa

The backwaters near Bambolim Beach are ideal for kayaking in North Goa, leading you on a picturesque journey through traditional fishermen’s villages and dense mangroves. What sets kayaking in Bambolim Beach apart is the opportunity to paddle under the moonlight! Certain operators, like the Adventure Breaks, organise night kayaking tours for seven days a month, providing a rare chance to experience kayaking in Goa at night. They also offer sunset kayaking tours, allowing you to see the mangroves bathed in the evening glow of the setting sun .

You get to dive into the tranquil charm of rural Goa and witness the susegad vibe as you paddle along.

Sal Backwaters

Go deep in the forests of South Goa as you paddle your way through the Sal Backwaters. This journey takes you through mangroves, where you can admire blooming lotus flowers, bamboo trees, cashew plants, rare fish, and birds. Besides being an excellent spot for kayaking, the shallow waters also offer the opportunity for a peaceful stand-up paddling experience. Various tour operators are available to assist adventurers in navigating these waters.

Palolem Beach

Kayaking in Goa

Palolem Beach offers a unique ocean kayaking experience in South Goa. Here, several operators offer kayak rentals by the hour, allowing visitors to venture into the ocean independently. While kayaking in the ocean at Palolem Beach is beginner-friendly, navigating the waves can pose a slight challenge due to the kayak’s stability. If you prefer a more tranquil experience, consider kayaking in the backwaters or rivers instead of the ocean.

Best time and season for kayaking in Goa

Kayaking in Goa is a year-round activity, offering different experiences depending on the season. While the monsoon season from June to August provides lush greenery and increased water flow for an adventurous paddling experience, the winter months from December to March offer pleasant weather with cool breezes, ideal for a relaxing kayak outing.

It’s advisable to plan your kayaking adventure during these optimal time frames for the most enjoyable experience. Avoid kayaking during the dry and humid period from April to June, just before the onset of the monsoon season, as the weather conditions may make the activity less comfortable.

These journeys offer a glimpse into the country's diverse landscapes and cultures. Whether you find yourself aboard a UNESCO-listed miniature train winding its way through hill stations or traversing the sun-kissed Konkan Railway along the coastline, a train journey promises unforgettable memories for sure.

India has a number of train routes across the country that you can choose from for a journey to remember. In case you are in the southern regions of India, you will definitely enjoy the landscape transitioning from golden beaches and palm-fringed backwaters to verdant hills adorned with cascading waterfalls and bustling metropolises. And what better way to savour this kaleidoscope of landscapes than from the window seat of a rumbling train, with a piping hot cup of sweet chai in hand.

And as you travel through the landscapes of South India, you'll also be treated to a culinary journey featuring regional specialties such as potato-stuffed dosas, crispy vadas, along with the comforting flavours of chai and filter coffee.

Certain stations along the route are renowned for their distinct regional specialties, and some trains have earned a reputation for serving exceptional food. Here, are some iconic train journeys across South India that you should bookmark.

Chennai to Rameswaram
