About Tours

Known as the gateway to the châteaux and wineries of the Loire Valley , the ancient Roman city of Tours fizzes with life, and makes for a brilliant holiday base. Accommodation options in the city and surrounding villages are wide-ranging, including everything from cosy townhouse B&Bs to imposing countryside châteaux. Whilst some of our top picks are set near the historic centre of the city, many of the best places to stay in Tours are historic properties nestled in verdant gardens, just a short drive away.

Begin your explorations in old Tours, popping into the Cathedral of Saint-Gatien, admiring the impressive collection of artwork at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and perusing antiques and French fashion on the Rue Nationale. The Touraine region also specialises in crisp, dry white wines. Sample and savour top local bounty at Les Halles, Tours’ covered food market, with a side of goat’s cheese or flavoursome rabbit. The Touraine Wine Museum offers tastings, excellent sample sales, and an in-depth history of the area’s 69 UNESCO-protected vineyards. To stay in the hub of the wine country, look towards Vouvray, just east of Tours.

If you're in the Loire to catch a glimpse of the region’s world-famous châteaux, look no further. Many of the best-known — Château de Chenonceau and Château de Chambord — and the most beautiful — Château d'Usse and Château d'Azay-le-Rideau — are within easy reach. Guided visits of the Château de Clos Lucé are fascinating, with an intriguing focus on the work of Leonardo da Vinci. The Priory of Saint-Cosmas and the ruins of the Basilica of St. Martins will also be of particular interest to history buffs.

The region’s other big draw is its cycling. Hire a bike and follow the picturesque Loire à Vélo trail to discover the lovely landscape on two wheels. There are also ample opportunities for long walks, horse riding and kayaking.

Whether you’re looking to kick back in the sunshine as a family, to taste terrific wine or to go cycling through the countryside, the best places to stay in Tours promise an enchanting place to unwind.

The 100 Best Hotels in the World in 2022

The best hotels in the world span every continent except Antarctica, though Travel + Leisure readers show an affinity for properties in Europe and their own backyard: the United States.

best luxury hotel in tours

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out  the 2023 list of our favorite hotels in the world .

With international travel's steady revival, Travel + Leisure readers have finally been able to revisit (and celebrate) their favorite hotels around the world — and check off many that have long been on their must-stay lists. This year's top 100 winners reflect the resurgence of global jet-setting, especially as European countries reopened their borders to American travelers. But as always, it's not just geography that determines which properties ranked highest. Through their votes and comments, our readers championed hotels that delivered great service and thoughtful amenities, ones that make the journey not only easier but also more memorable.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

Excitement around a return to Europe is reflected in how high hotels in some of the Continent's great cities placed on this year's list. It's noteworthy that two newcomers placed among those properties: Hôtel Madame Rêve, in Paris, at No. 9 and Rosewood Villa Magna, in Madrid, at No. 10. More impressive still is that for the first time in more than a decade, our readers selected a European hotel as their No. 1 in the world: Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, in Italy's iconic Tuscan countryside, is 2022's best hotel.

That's not the only big shift in this year's top 100 rankings. Last year, India was the clear "country winner," with 12 hotels placing in the top 100. While India still fared well this year, with 11 properties (the same number as Italy), the country best represented in 2022 was the United States, with 19 properties. Our readers loved a variety of hotels from sea to shining sea. The charming Pickering House Inn, in New Hampshire, landed highest at No. 4, followed by the iconic Lowell in New York City at No. 8. Glamping concept Under Canvas Mount Rushmore is No. 30; while the private-island resort Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, in Florida, is No. 94.

Below, the full list of the best hotels in the world, according to T+L readers.

1. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, Montalcino, Italy

Five thousand acres of Tuscan splendor offer a lot of room to create a memorable guest experience, and that's exactly what Rosewood did with this centuries-old estate surrounded by rolling vineyards and towering pine trees. Sure, there's Old World charm at every turn, but modern additions and something-for-everyone amenities make Castiglion del Bosco a multisensory experience. There's a Brunello di Montalcino winery, a cooking school, tennis courts, a spa focusing on rest-promoting treatments, and even a little terra-cotta-roofed church. A new complex was recently added to the property that orbits around 19 sumptuous suites. Here, no need to draw the curtains: you want to wake up to breathtaking views of the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia Natural Park and the hilltop town of Montalcino.

Score: 99.25

Book on Tripadvisor

2. Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection, Santorini, Greece

On the quieter side of Santorini, where the same iconic whitewashed architecture and stunning sunsets can be found without the crowds, this recently redesigned 20-room hotel is ideally suited for quiet intimate moments, whether that's for meditative mornings staring out at the blue waters of the Aegean or afternoons soaking in the cliffside infinity pool.

Score: 99.22

3. Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, South Malé Atoll, Maldives

A 45-minute yacht sail from the airport in Malé gets you to this island paradise in style. Its 119 villas come with everything a traveler could want out of a Maldivian vacation: postcard-perfect ocean views, private plunge pools, and dedicated butlers, who offer what one reader called "the best personalized service."

Score: 99.11

4. Pickering House Inn, Wolfeboro, New Hampshire

A two-year renovation completed in 2018 transformed this historic home (originally built in 1813) into a charming 10-room guesthouse. Not far from the bucolic shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, the inn's individually designed rooms come with a gourmet breakfast expertly prepared by executive chef Jonathan Hudak.

Score: 98.95

5. (tie) One&Only Reethi Rah, North Malé Atoll, Maldives

At this resort on one of the largest islands on the North Malé Atoll, the most daunting task is having to pick between a glamorous overwater villa — all with catamaran nets over the Indian Ocean, some with infinity pools — and a stylish beach villa surrounded by tropical foliage and set on dazzling-white sand.

Score: 98.93

5. (tie) Royal Mansour Marrakech, Morocco

Set within the storied walls of the city's energetic medina, this 12-acre expanse functions almost like a city unto itself, with its 53 private riads designed in mosaic tiles, thick carpets, and artisan furniture, plus a spacious outdoor pool, fragrant gardens, and Michelin-starred dining.

7. Capella Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Considering the competition, to be ranked the best resort in Bali counts for a lot. But thanks to architect Bill Bensley's artsy vision, readers say "there's nothing like" this "magical" tented camp experience in the Indonesian jungle.

Score: 98.87

8. The Lowell, New York City

A landmark hotel first opened in 1927 on Manhattan's tony Upper East Side, the 74-room Lowell is aptly described by one voter as a "home away from home." The rooms and suites that populate its 17 floors are accented with wood-burning fireplaces and lush terraces. Further enhancing the experience: easy, intuitive service by the staff and perks like complimentary shoeshines and personalized welcome beverages and amenities.

Score: 98.80

9. Hôtel Madame Rêve, Paris

Located within a short walk of both the Bourse de Commerce and the Samaritaine department store, this 82-room bolt-hole — one of the newest hotels in the City of Light — delivers on a comfortable yet fashionable experience, especially on its verdant, 10,000-square-foot rooftop and restaurant. Despite only having opened last October, it's already "the Parisian place to go out," one reader attested.

Score: 98.73

10. (tie) Rosewood Villa Magna, Madrid

The Spanish capital is in the throes of a hospitality renaissance, and among its leaders is this 154-room haven, perched on the elegant Paseo de la Castellana. Everything about the hotel feels incredibly discreet, from the handsome interiors to Tarde.O, its sexy cocktail bar.

Score: 98.67

10. (tie) The Oberoi, New Delhi

Though located near many of New Delhi's top attractions, the 220-room Oberoi retains an urban-resort feel thanks to two different pools and a number of fabulous restaurants and bars, including Baoshuan, which features a Chinese menu by renowned chef Andrew Wong.

12. The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur, India

The regal energy of this palace hotel, located across Lake Pichola from Udaipur's City Palace, is legendary. "Heaven on Earth," declared one reader. Spread across a verdant estate measuring over 1.3 million square feet, this hotel is all about opulence and tranquility. Another voter, who spent five days at the property after her wedding, wrote: "They made it so, so special. The location, construction, and food is unmatched."

Score: 98.58

13. Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Bali, Indonesia

Stretching across 24 tropical acres along the Ayung River and surrounded by rice paddies, this 60-key retreat feels like a "Balinese village in one place," according to one voter. With a gorgeous spa, four restaurants and bars, and an organic garden, there's plenty to do no matter your interests.

Score: 98.31

14. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking is the focus of this lodge at the edge of Volcanoes National Park. Spacious thatched-roof guest rooms are among the most stylish accommodations you'll find in the region, and the kitchen pays particular attention to growing vegetables to give meals a locavore touch.

Score: 98.29

15. Portrait Firenze, Florence

The Michele Bönan–designed interiors of this boutique hotel, which sits steps from the iconic Ponte Vecchio, might be the most strikingly modern in Florence. Book one of the Arno-facing suites with balconies to enjoy some of the best views in the city.

Score: 98.25

16. Raffles Istanbul

Occupying 27 floors of the multi-use Zorlu Center, this modern hotel packs a lot into its urban setting, especially in the spa, which houses three hammams, two pools, and a gym. It's worth carving out time to explore the property's well-curated art collection, which encompasses 224 works from both Turkish and international creators.

17. The Oberoi, Marrakech, Morocco

Contained within a 1.2 million-square-foot orchard filled with citrus and olive trees, this newcomer impresses with both its size and Moorish architecture. Villas feature private plunge pools for ultimate privacy, and an ayurvedic spa offers meditation, yoga, and healing spa treatments to help guests relax even further.

Score: 98.24

18. Capella Hanoi, Vietnam

Located near the opera house in Hanoi's Old Quarter, this Bill Bensley–designed property is a glamorous homage to the excess of the Roaring Twenties in Vietnam. Rooms are not only spacious, they're beautifully eye-catching, thanks to a mix of colors, patterns, and textures. "Despite being a very young staff, they have a love for culture, food, and the arts, which made my stay a great experience," one reader shared.

Score: 98.18

19. White Elephant Palm Beach, Florida

The little sister to the Nantucket original, this resort from the White Elephant team added youthful energy to the destination when it opened its 32 tropical-inspired rooms in November 2020. Its restaurant Lola 41 has since become a hot spot not just for its grilled catch of the day and fruit-forward cocktails but for the prime people-watching, too.

Score: 98.13

20. The Loutrel, Charleston, South Carolina

One of the newest properties on the top 100 list, this swank 50-room hotel in Charleston's historic district only opened last fall, but it has already impressed travelers. Readers remarked on its genteel interiors, rooftop lounge serving up addictive cocktails and fantastic city views, and thoughtful touches like "beautiful rooms that come with handwritten notes."

Score: 98.00

21. (tie) Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel, Cuzco, Peru

Housed inside the former Seminary of San Antonio Abad — a landmark building from the 16th century — this 122-room hotel on Plazoleta Nazarenas is historical opulence at its finest. Intricately carved wood fixtures and arched pathways take you back in time, but the thoughtful VIP service is in keeping with today's luxury standards.

Score: 97.87

21. (tie) Sani Asterias, Halkidiki, Greece

Fifty-seven elegantly designed suites are spread across a beach in pristine Halkidiki, one of northern Greece's premier seaside destinations. The resort is famous for its complimentary perks, which include morning and evening sails around the Aegean. Another on-property bonus: French skin and body brand Anne Semonin created bespoke treatments for the spa.

23. Shangri-La the Shard, London

Prepare for what one reader dubbed "awesome views of London" at this hotel inside a now-iconic Renzo Piano glass skyscraper. Spread among the 18 floors are 202 modernly appointed rooms, three distinct dining venues, and the highest hotel pool in Western Europe.

Score: 97.86

24. Coquillade Provence Resort & Spa, Gargas, France

This "unbelievably charming" Relais & Châteaux resort near the Luberon is "a destination unto itself," according to T+L readers. Rustic-chic rooms, a fabulous spa, and gourmet restaurants are complemented by the owner's two great passions: wine (the property is surrounded by vineyards) and cycling (it has its own cycling center).

Score: 97.82

25. (tie) Taj Palace, New Delhi

Located near many of the city's international embassies, this lush six-acre property pampers its guests with world-class amenities including a massive outdoor pool, a mini golf course, five dining outlets, and a spa that focuses on ayurvedic treatments.

Score: 97.60

25. (tie) Pendry Chicago

With its central location in the city's Loop, this 364-room hotel ticks a lot of boxes before you've even stepped inside the historic art deco Carbide & Carbon building. Rooms have a sleek, modern aesthetic, while the restaurant and bars are trendy destinations for both travelers and locals, especially Château Carbide, a seasonal rooftop bar designed to evoke the south of France.

27. Nayara Tented Camp, Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

Spacious 1,700-square-foot tented suites — luxuriously outfitted with soaking tubs and plunge pools — sit amid the rain-forest canopy. Morning yoga, spa treatments incorporating volcanic mud and other local ingredients, and spring-fed pools help make this safari-like resort, as one reader summarized, "truly exceptional."

Score: 97.55

28. (tie) Hotel Belmar, Monteverde, Costa Rica

Secreted away in the cloud forest of Monteverde, this 26-room lodge ("beautiful and classy," according to one commenter) combines sustainability with nature-first adventure to create a truly memorable stay. Guests can learn about low-impact farming at the on-site garden, then strike out on a bird-watching hike before finishing out the day with a cocktail class.

Score: 97.50

28. (tie) Royal Champagne Hôtel & Spa, Champillon, France

The location of this 47-room hotel couldn't be better for a dream stay in Champagne: perched above the Marne Valley, surrounded by vineyards, and just a quick drive from Épernay. The on-property experience complements the region, especially when it comes to the food, which is overseen by chef Jean-Denis Rieubland, who helped lead the hotel's Le Royal to a Michelin star.

30. Under Canvas Mount Rushmore, Keystone, South Dakota

A stunning location in the Black Hills places guests amid aromatic ponderosa pines and juniper trees — in addition to putting them within stone's throw of the eponymous landmark. Activities at the glamping resort range from hiking and biking to a buffalo safari, and dining offerings emphasize local, seasonal ingredients.

Score: 97.47

31. (tie) Riggs Washington D.C.

Surrounded by some of the capital's best museums, this buzzy Penn Quarter hotel (inside a historic bank building) is known not just for its Instagram-worthy interiors and spotless service but also for its inventory of see-and-be-seen social spaces, including the "amazing subterranean bar Silver Lyan" by star mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana, as one reader touted.

Score: 97.45

31. (tie) Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

There may not be a more stunning arrival experience than the one at this beautiful resort, sandwiched between Pedregal Mountain and the ocean. Guests drive through a tunnel carved through the center of the mountain before arriving at the recently renovated open-air lobby. The resort also features a sumptuous spa and cliffside dining at El Farallon. But the aspect that might convince guests to stay an extra few days? Each guest room comes with a private plunge pool and an outdoor terrace perfect for whale-watching.

33. (tie) The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort, Ranthambhore, India

A collection of 25 luxe tents tucked among tropical trees on the western edge of Ranthambhore National Park, Oberoi Vanyavilas takes glamping to what one reader called the "extreme in luxury." Game drives to see tigers and leopards are complemented with languorous soaks in claw-foot tubs, yoga sessions, and indulgent globally inspired meals.

Score: 97.41

33. (tie) Canaves Oia Epitome, Santorini, Greece

The dark volcanic-rock foundation of this hotel overlooking the Bay of Ammoudi eschews some of Santorini's more mainstream all-white aesthetic. Still, the resort gives guests everything they could want from a Greek island vacation, including breezy, ocean-inspired interiors and water-facing plunge pools from which to watch "amazing sunsets," as one reader noted. Another voter called the property's chef a "master at his craft."

35. The Standard, Hua Hin, Thailand

"Great design, great staff, and great food," wrote one reader of this sharp addition to Hua Hin's resort scene. The modern hotel combines the lush, tropical atmosphere of Thailand with the look-at-me allure of South Beach thanks to a colorful, contemporary design. Rooms near the main pool and the restaurants put some of the resort's best amenities mere steps away, but beach lovers might opt for one of the more opulent villas to be closer to the sand and the waves.

Score: 97.38

36. The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra, India

Some hotels have a major selling point that is impossible to overlook. For this property on the Golden Triangle route, it's that its "views of the Taj Mahal cannot be beat," one voter shared. Palatial in its own right, the resort is decorated with marble and silk in seemingly every room, and the grounds feature temple-like architecture and manicured gardens that lead to private dining nooks.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Score: 97.37

37. (tie) Hotel Santa Caterina, Amalfi, Italy

First opened in 1904, this family-owned haven is one of the Amalfi Coast's grande dames. Rooms and suites are adorned with Old World antiques, hand-painted tiles, and marble bathrooms that keep the vibe true to the region's timeless allure. Views of the Mediterranean are fantastic — as is the property's private beach club down below.

Score: 97.33

37. (tie) Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia

This transporting hotel set on 15 acres of tropical gardens has welcomed the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Michelle Obama over the course of its 90-year history. The huge pool is truly impressive, but the most intriguing features are the decades-old wooden elevator. Experiences such as Apsara dance performances and daily blessings led by monks add cultural context to the hotel stay.

37. (tie) Nihi Sumba, Sumba, Indonesia

The pristine island of Sumba is twice the size of Bali but nowhere near as well-known, which means guests at this haven have plenty of its white-sand beaches to themselves — if the horses don't beat them to it. Twenty-eight rustic villas are set on a private beach on the edge of the jungle. They come with canopy beds, outdoor bathtubs, and plunge pools (one has a waterfall), all of which contribute to a decidedly romantic atmosphere.

40. La Réserve Paris – Hôtel & Spa

When it comes to a fantasy Parisian hotel, this discreet Haussmannian mansion is "the whole package," according to one reader. It exudes royal opulence thanks to brocade textiles, blue marble, elegant fireplaces, and a genteel library. ("Exceptional design and attention to detail," another reader noted.) A fabulous indoor pool, an intimate spa, and Michelin-starred meals at Le Gabriel are equally enticing reasons to linger on property, even though the Champs-Élysées is just steps away.

Score: 97.26

41. Hotel de la Ville, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Rome

There are plenty of reasons besides a prime location above the Spanish Steps to book a stay at this standout. Among them: the rooftop lounge affords a bird's-eye view of the Eternal City and many of its most important monuments, as do some of the rooms, and the spa is one of Rome's most relaxing destinations.

Score: 97.17

42. Il San Pietro di Positano, Italy

Built into the cliffs of Positano, Il San Pietro, like many of the best hotels in the Amalfi Coast, comes with "unbelievable views" of the sea, as one reader described. But quirky décor and outstanding service give the property unforgettable charm. A private beach, Michelin-starred dining, a tennis court, and a boat are the highlights of its laundry list of top-notch amenities.

Score: 97.12

43. Six Senses Yao Noi, Koh Yao Noi, Thailand

Located across Phang Nga Bay from much busier Phuket, the island of Yao Noi feels like a true escape. And the Six Senses there, discreetly spread across 24 untouched acres of tropical paradise, is even more tucked away. Villas come with pools (even the ones directly on the beach) and offer ample privacy. On-property activities (movie screenings on the sand and batik-painting lessons) complement time spent in the world-class spa and eating at the four restaurants.

Score: 97.07

44. Finca Cortesín Hotel, Golf & Spa, Málaga, Spain

On the Costa del Sol, this 67-room hotel houses one of Spain's very best golf courses. But if tee time isn't your thing, there's plenty more to occupy a stay. The resort is home to a massive spa, four swimming pools, a handful of great restaurants, a beach club, gorgeous clay tennis courts, and a yoga and meditation center.

Score: 96.97

45. Secret Bay, Portsmouth, Dominica

A handful of cliffside villas (with private pools, of course) surrounded by tropical jungle make up the intimate accommodations on this four-acre island property. Those who want to disconnect from it all can sunbathe at the beach, take Caribbean cooking classes, and kayak or snorkel, then head to the charming spa.

46. Cape Grace, Cape Town

"The attention to detail is first-rate," said one reader who stayed at this Table Mountain–facing harborside hotel. Antiques and stunning hand-painted fabrics mingle with dramatic chandeliers and sculptural, decorative art pieces to create a layered design identity. A fine-dining restaurant, convivial whiskey-obsessed bar, and spa round out the experience.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Score: 96.96

47. (tie) Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, India

A grand hotel set on its own island in Lake Pichola, this decadent 18th-century retreat was first built as a royal summer house. No wonder one reader thought that every corner felt like a "fairy-tale palace experience." Rooms have views of either the city of Udaipur, the gardens, or the hills, but all around is the water, giving the hotel the constant air of romance.

Score: 96.92

47. (tie) Taj Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad, India

The level of unabashed luxury at this 60-room hotel — the late-19th-century home to the nizam of Hyderabad — is truly a sight to behold. Rare antiques, ornate furniture, dreamy murals, museum-quality sculptures, and manicured grounds (through which horse-drawn carriages stroll) will catch your eye at every turn. There's also a 101-seat table ready to host full-blown dinner parties. "The grandeur is magnificent," one reader said.

49. Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

A stylish, modern hideaway on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, this cliffside resort has 65 of what one reader called "the best villas in the world" thanks to thoughtful design and jaw-dropping ocean views. Score: 96.83

51. (tie) Six Senses Con Dao, Con Dao, Vietnam

The mile-long white-sand beach that runs along this tucked-away wellness resort is "just paradise," as one voter attested. With the brand's focus on wellness, it's fair to expect a spa experience that will melt away every inch of stress.

Score: 96.80

51. (tie) Cavas Wine Lodge, Mendoza, Argentina

Given its name, it should come as no surprise that this luxury lodge at the foot of the Andes Mountains taps into the region's passion for viticulture. How does that play out in the guest experience on the 55-acre estate? There's a wine cave aging some of the best vintages in Argentina, the spa uses grape-seed extract in its treatments, and guest rooms are surrounded by vineyards.

53. Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Lake Como, Italy

Perched on the western edge of Lake Como, this grande dame is one of the region's fabled properties. Former guests rave about the picturesque setting ("beautiful escape from reality," said one), the transporting spa in the adjacent villa, the Old World interiors, and the indulgent pools — one of which floats on the lake.

Villas cocooned within the trees come with plunge pools fed by hot springs.

55. Lodge on Little St. Simons Island, Georgia

Set on 11,000 acres of wilderness off the coast of Georgia, this 16-room eco-lodge takes communing with nature to the next level. Elevated camp-inspired accommodations mean nothing ever feels too precious, but if getting away from it all and rediscovering the planet's unspoiled beauty (to hike, to fish, to relax) is what you're after, this is, as one reader attests, "heaven on earth."

Score: 96.76

56. Rancho Santana, Rivas, Nicaragua

This 2,700-acre resort is set on forested hills, craggy cliffs, and a handful of pristine beaches, and because Nicaragua is still largely an under-the-radar destination, the resort retains a "hidden treasure" vibe, according to one reader. Surfing, farm-to-table dining, horseback riding, learning about turtle preservation, and a 6,000-square-foot spa are among the ways to unwind.

Score: 96.75

57. (tie) Amanpuri, Phuket, Thailand

The jungle-fringed grounds of this palatial resort beautifully blend regal majesty and peaceful privacy. Its direct access to almost-private Surin Beach ("best beach in Phuket," one voter argued) is a major draw. A variety of gardens (rose, cacti, herb) landscape a nearly 100-year-old farmhouse on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. Outdoor showers and in-room fireplaces lead the list of luxury amenities. Of course game drives are on the itinerary, but food and agricultural experiences (baking classes; coffee picking) create what one reader touted as "the most unique lodge in East Africa."

Score: 96.63

61. Jade Mountain, Soufrière, St. Lucia

Set on a lush 600-acre hilltop property, this adults-only all-inclusive resort is all about "next-level romance." The 29 guest rooms look out to the imposing Pitons and are appropriately called Ssanctuaries — outfitted with Jacuzzis or plunge pools that seem to stretch over the sea — to evoke tranquil intimacy.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Score: 96.63

62. Borgo Egnazia, Savelletri di Fasano, Italy

In many ways, this stately resort is a miniature Puglian village unto itself. Its rustic, nearly all-white interiors are the stylish backdrop to the entirely maximalist inventory of delicious amenities: Michelin-starred dining, a golf course, two separate beach clubs on two different private beaches, four pools, and a spa. The best rooms here have dedicated gardens, terraces, and plunge pools.

Chef Matt Johnson oversees a few different dining concepts here, all of which are serviced by one of the state's most impressive cellars, which houses 12,000 bottles of wine from around the world.

65. The Goring, London

This stately boutique hotel near Buckingham Palace has been owned by the Goring family since 1910. Opulent details abound (whimsical relief sculptures; crystal chandeliers; Michelin-starred dining), but the stay is never over-the-top thanks to thoughtful, comfortable service.

66. The Oberoi Rajvilas, Jaipur, India

This Caribbean private-island resort that can only be reached by private boat charter is, according to a World's Best voter, "one of the most relaxing places to spend time in." The 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth

Robb report has compiled a select list of luxury properties that have ascended to a rarefied pantheon: classic hotels around the world that transcend trends to achieve genuine—and sustained—greatness..

Taj Lake Palace

Every year, Robb Report scours the world to unearth the best new luxury hotels from the last 12 months. Candidates to spotlight in the annual Best of the Best must be splashy, five-star debuts that are instantly earmarked to be globetrotters’ staples. Each of those new openings is hoping not only to make an impactful start, but also to ascend to a rarefied pantheon: the roster of classic hotels that transcends trends, properties with a permanent place on speed-dial for any discerning traveler.

Those esteemed hotels vary wildly: They might be centuries old or have opened just a few years ago, city center hideaways or country estates, exemplars of bleeding-edge, contemporary design or reassuringly retro. But they share one thing: a commitment to exemplifying the best in luxury hospitality. For that reason, they are, inarguably, the World’s Greatest Hotels—and for the first time, Robb Report has compiled a list of the top 50 such properties across the globe.

Think of this rundown as a cheat sheet or shortcut to a guaranteed stellar trip: Every hotel, safari camp or resort endorsed here has been tried and tested, again and again, by the world’s pickiest travelers. Year in and year out, they’ve consistently earned accolades and loyalty in equal measure.

Our methodology for this list was rigorous but simple: Few specialists in the world are deft and connected enough to earn the endorsement of Robb Report ; just 21 of them, in fact, can be considered true Travel Masters , a mark of the caliber of their expertise and clients. This brain trust of the travel industry’s five-star experts has first-hand knowledge of every need-to-know room around the world, so who better to tap for nominations.

We asked each of them for up to 10 properties which they vouch for, and regularly recommend to clients, explaining in detail what makes that hotel, resort or ranch a true standout. Unsurprisingly, there were many overlaps, with multiple properties receiving endorsements from several operators—these are the hotels which earned a spot in the top 10. The rest we have organized by geography for ease of reference.

Some of the winners aren’t unexpected—the European classics, for example, will be familiar to most—while others are more off-beat, like a cell phone service-free lodge in Alaska. There are some glaring omissions, too: No property in New York or Miami made the Travel Masters’ list, nor anywhere in vacation mainstays Mexico and Hawaii. It’s a call to action for hoteliers there, we hope, to rally their efforts and maybe, just maybe, squeak onto next year’s list.

1. Claridge’s, London, UK

Claridge's London

If Judi Dench were a hotel, she’d be Claridge’s —this  grande dame  of the London hotel scene is a beloved, determinedly British institution that’s been part of English life for decades yet retains a youthful vigor. The hotel, which opened in 1812, outpaces even the almost-90-year-old acting legend—in fact, it just added a subterranean wellness center kitted out in signature zen wood and limestone by designer André Fu. What other hotel can count both the late Queen Elizabeth II, a regular, protocol-stretching lunch guest and Mick Jagger as devotees? The Maybourne-operated property is a sister to sites in Beverly Hills and the French Riviera, as well as another London spot, including the Connaught, but it outstrips them all—book in at the Mews Terrace for a charming only-in-London experience on a discreet back alley. Unique Properties and Events co-owner Cedric Reversade calls the entire place “perfection” and recommends truffle French fries in the foyer washed down with a dry martini, and the service of the “divine concierges, Nigel or Martin” whenever you leave its walls. Ashley Isaacs Ganz of Artisans of Leisure puts it more simply. “It’s my home away from home in London.”

Doubles from $1,493

2. Le Bristol, Paris, France

Le Bristol Paris

The Oetker-operated Bristol sits in one of the best spots in the City of Light, per Red Savannah ’s Edward Granville. “It’s the ultimate location in the city boasting amazing views across the skyline, including Sacré Coeur and the Eiffel Tower,“ he says, of the property on the Faubourg St Honoré. The hotel has its own appeal, too: Don’t miss the trompe l’oeil decorated swimming pool on the sixth floor, and make sure to pause to pet Socrate, Le Bristol’s most important permanent resident—its in-house cat. Book dinner, too, at Epicure, its gourmet restaurant overseen by Michelin favorite Eric Frechon—try the macaroni stuffed with black truffle, artichoke and foie gras or the onsite chocolate factory, which focuses on grand cru cocoas from around the world.

Doubles from roughly $2,054.

3. La Mamounia, Morocco

Mamounia

Think of La Mamounia as a Moroccan fantasy made real, a too-much-is-never-enough maximalist fever dream that just underwent another refresh during the pandemic. Come here to idle in the gardens, nibbling on a Pierre Hermé macaron, or sashay round the sceney pool in a couture kaftan; make sure to book a room that overlooks the gardens and that pool and sip a glass of Champagne or two on the balcony. It’s been a boldfaced bolthole for decades, whether acting as the de facto winter home of Winston Churchill or as a shorthand for tasteful luxury for celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and, more infamously, Anna Delvey. “It’s iconic and legendary, but it still stays current,” says Isaacs Ganz. “I love the Moroccan design throughout, the colorful tiles, the gardens where Churchill painted, the hidden courtyards and the traditional hammam.” Bonus points for its location, a few minutes’ walk from the souk.

Doubles from $570.

4. Amangiri, Utah, USA

Amangiri

The name to know here? Audrey Huttert. Kevin Jackson of EXP Journeys says the GM of this property is the reason he recommends it to so many clients. It was only the second Aman to open stateside, after Jackson Hole, and it took seven painstaking years of planning to workshop the footprint of the property, nestled in 600 acres of the southwestern desert like a series of concrete boxes half-concealed in the landscape. Come here for outdoors adventuring aplenty amid the national parks of Bryce Canyon, sunrise hot air ballooning and trails on horseback. Camp Sarika is the latest addition to the complex, with 10 one- and two-bedroom glamping tents (known as pavilions) scattered around 55 acres onsite as an alternative to the hotel proper. “The guests have a sense of luxury in a remote place with spectacular food and scenery,” Jackson raves.

Doubles from $4,200.

5. Shinta Mani Wild, Cambodia

Shinta Mani Wild

If you thought that Bill Bensley’s retro-maximalist interiors at the Capella Ubud in Bali were amazing, you’ll squeal for this all-inclusive, 15-tent resort deep in the jungle of Cardamom National Park in southwest Cambodia. Combing bold textiles and retro décor on the banks of the raging Timor River, a stay here is all about being transported to another time and place. But the “wild” part of this five-star camp isn’t just about the decor, the forest-to-table dining or even the location. The adventure begins as soon as you arrive via the 400-meter zip line over the forest, river and waterfall. When you land, your butler will be waiting. Drop off your bags and dig in. Go orchid-hunting. Join a motorcycle patrol with the jungle rangers. Visit butterfly sanctuaries. Kayak down narrow streams. Strap on your binoculars and search for tropical birds and butterflies. Hit the mountain biking trails. Or simply lace up your boots and trek like the explorers of yore. “It’s luxury but not for the faint hearted,” Christopher Wilmot-Sitwell of cazenove+loyd says.

Tents from $1,900 per night.

6. Minaret Station, New Zealand

Minaret Station

A unique lodge situated deep within the Southern Alps with just four guest chalets and accessible only via helicopter, Minaret Station mixes luxury service and accommodations with rugged adventure. Each day you’ll take in this iconic slice of the great outdoors while mountain biking, backcountry fishing, setting out on guided hunts, eating up chef-prepared picnics on a mountain top or even heli-skiing. Speaking of helicopters, they’re an important part of the experience here: Namely flying through Milford Sound, a spectacular, world-renowned fjordland. “It’s a gateway to a collection of exclusive adventure experiences enjoyed in total privacy within some of the most remote locations in New Zealand (if not the planet!),” says Stuart Rigg of Southern Crossings.

Doubles from roughly $2,000, plus roughly $1,650 per person for helicopter transfer from Queenstown.

7. NIHI Sumba, Indonesia

Nihi Sumba

Knocking Bali down a peg or two as the go-to tropical island in Indonesia, Sumba is finally getting all of the attention (and investment) it deserves. But that all started with NIHI Sumba . It consists of just 27 thatched villas (with private swimming pools and traditional Indonesian architecture) spread across 667 acres of minimally developed island splendor. While it was once best-known for its world-class surfing, today the resort offers so much more: from chocolate making to beach rides on (and therapy with) Sumbanese stallions. Owned by investor Chris Burch (ex to the famed fashion designer Tory Burch), the resort also “connects guests with purposeful experiences through the Sumba Foundation ,” said John Clifford of International Travel Management. “It’s the leader in eco-conscious luxury. It walks-the-walk of giving back.”

Doubles from $1,795 in the high season.

8. Longitude 131, Australia

Longitude 131

Australia’s harsh red center isn’t known for its luxuriousness, but Longitude 131 is the exception to that rule. With direct views of Australia’s most iconic site, Ayers Rock (Uluru), the resort is composed of 16 five-star tents or “guest pavilions” that are every bit as nice as a room at the Ritz. Each tent features a private outdoor deck that can be set up with a super-comfortable deluxe “swag” (Aussie for a single-person camping bed) and a fireplace. Once the burning sun sets and the air cools, it’s time to set up your little camp within a camp and gaze into the night sky. The Southern Cross looks like it’s been lit with LEDs. “We love the romance of the canopied pavilions and waking up to views across the outback to Uluru,” said Rigg. “But the stand-out experience is sleeping under the Outback stars.”

Luxury tents from roughly $2,600, all-inclusive.

9. Selinda, Botswana

Selinda

Botswana is the undisputed luxury safari destination, thanks to a forward-thinking decades-old tourism policy that both prioritized high-end, low-density visits and aggressively protected its impressive roster of animals against incursions by poachers. There’s a distinctive appeal, too, thanks to the affect of the local Batswana and the human heritage that intertwines here, as embodied by Selinda itself. “It’s an architectural trifecta of three cultures: European, Mokololo and Bayei,” says Uncharted’s Sandy Cunningham of the camp. A hotel in the second largest game concession in Botswana, this is undeniably passion project for photographers and conservationists Beverly and Dereck Joubert. Though the pair owns a dozen or so camps around sub-Saharan Africa, this four-year-old property is a standout, located in the northern reaches of the country that emphasizes sustainable tourism in inventive ways—think crushing empty bottles to provide sand for buildings in local villages rather than trucking them away as trash. Stay in the two-bedroom Selinda Suite for the best experience, says Cunningham: “It’s themed to resemble the thatched villages of Sangwali, who loaned the great explorer David Livingstone 200 men during his travels. It’s reachable via boat along the Selinda Spillway—the ultimate 007 arrival.”

Doubles from $11,088 in the midseason.

10. Soneva Fushi, Maldives

Soneva Fushi

The darling of Six Senses mastermind Sonu Shivdasani opened way back in 1995, Soneva Fushi is the Maldives’ most enduring hotspot. With just 72 sprawling villas, the resort gives every guest direct beach access within a UNESCO biosphere reserve. So whether it’s diving, snorkeling, water sliding directly into the Indian Ocean or just lazing, no other resort in the region does the barefoot-luxury-beach-holiday concept as effortlessly or with as much panache. But the secret to its success is service, according to Jules Maury of Scott Dunn: “I cannot really put into words how their staff and butlers create this magic, or how their chefs provide such food experiences. The barefoot ethos of the place just soothes the soul.”

Villas from $2,000 per night.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in Europe

Famous Bergün/Bravuogn village along the panoramic golden pass line train in West of Switzerland

Whether you’re putting on the Ritz or sucking up the sun in Italy, Europe’s time-honored hotels practically invented the white-glove service we’ve come to expect. The brands and ownership may have changed over the years, but nearly all of our guide’s favorite stays are Grand Dames fit for royalty.

Gleneagles, Scotland

Gleneagles

Sure, this five-star, 232-room resort in Perthshire an hour or so outside Edinburgh might be considered golf’s spiritual home: It has three landmarks, 18-hole courses, and a storied history as the site of the first playoff between Brits and Americans that’s now better known as the Ryder Cup. But you don’t have to be a putt-prone golf devotee to stay here, according to Isaacs Ganz, who calls it a “destination in and of itself for anyone who wants a luxurious getaway in the beautiful Scottish countryside.” Come to hike—the 11-mile Blackford route is a bracing way to explore the rolling landscape nearby—and for a snifter or two of whisky; Perthshire’s roster of distilleries may not include many household names, but some of Scotland’s oldest distillers are a short drive away, including Glenturret , which claims to be the oldest still-working site dating back to 1775.

Country rooms from roughly $800.

Brown's Hotel, London, UK

Brown's Hotel

Winston Churchill wasn’t just a war-winning British national hero—he was also a hotel connoisseur. “I don’t stay in a hotel. I stay in Brown’s,” he reportedly said, the ultimate accolade from the ultimate prime minister. No wonder the martini on offer here—hold the vermouth, heavy on the gin—served at the bar is named in his honor. Jonathan Alder of Jonathan’s Travels  agrees. “It will feel like home as soon as you arrive,” he says, “And it’s dangerously close to all the best shopping.” The 115-room Mayfair property opened in 1937, but the current interiors are more evocative of the 1940s, all overstuffed chairs and vintage bric-a-brac decorating the rooms. Its literary associations are impressive, too, as everyone from Dylan Thomas to Agatha Christie is said to have stayed here and been inspired by the site. Alder often books clients into the Rudyard Kipling suite, named after another author who dashed off a novel in situ.

Doubles from roughly $1,000.

The Ritz Paris, Paris, France

The Ritz Paris

Sure, it’s a cliché, but for good reason: The Ritz has been synonymous with effortless Parisian glamor for decades, an insouciant ultra-luxe spot for the world’s most glamorous travelers since Cesar Ritz and chef Auguste Escoffier first opened it in 1898. It was the backdrop to not one but three Audrey Hepburn moves in the 1950s and 1960s, yet still retained enough rockstar cachet to be the place where Johnny Depp and Kate Moss decided to fill a bathtub with Champagne (the recently retired head bartender here, Colin Field, was in charge of cocktails at the model’s later wedding to Kills guitarist Jamie Hince). Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal of Fischer Travel calls it a “crown jewel hotel” and recommends the Coco Chanel suite, named after its most famous resident—the designer lived here for more than thirty years, and often used the staff entrance to access her apartment here for complete discretion.

Doubles from roughly $1,540.

The Royal Hotel San Remo, San Remo, Italy

The Royal Hotel San Remo

Mention San Remo, and few could mark it on a map, and that’s just how this under-the-radar, upscale coastal resort town likes it, a last gasp of la dolce vita along the Ventimiglia coast before hitting the border with France. Its standout hotel is this five-star, 127-room property , a wedding cake-like landmark that sits on a hill overlooking the beach front (the suites here all have wraparound, ocean view terraces). The hotel opened in 1872, and the interior artfully retains much of the original, Imperial-era grandeur—think winter gardens, lashings of inlaid wood and Phantom -worth chandeliers—while adding impressive, more contemporary touches like the 172,200-square-foot park in which it sits was master planned by the architect Gio Ponti. “It has a timeless charm—this is an opportunity to experience a traditional Italian summer with all of the trimmings,” raves Jennifer Schwartz of Authentic Explorations.

Doubles from roughly $468.

Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc, Antibes, France

Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc

How many hotels have an alter ego? This 114-room, glamor-drenched spot on the Côte d’Azur certainly has: It was such an inspiration to writer F. Scott Fitzgerald that he immortalized it as the Hôtel des Etrangers in Tender is the Night , and the hedonistic Americans who lived there morphed into the novel’s party-loving protagonists . Since then, the sprawling property, which sits on 22 pine tree-dotted oceanfront acres, has lured everyone from the Kennedys to Liz Taylor, who spent one of her many honeymoons here; it was Slim Aarons’ snapshots of in the 1960s on its grounds that epitomized the jetset of that era, mostly centered on the Art Deco-era annex blasted out of the cliffs with dynamite, that features one of the world’s most appealing infinity pools. “It’s a legendary and timeless hotel,” says Fischer-Rosenthal.

Doubles from roughly $1,500.

The Beau Rivage Palace, Lausanne, Switzerland

The Beau Rivage Palace

Come here for “old-world elegance and incredible, lake-view rooms, not to mention close proximity to the Lavaux wine region” says Isaacs Ganz. Lausanne might be a minnow compared to Geneva on the same lake—it’s barely half its size—but as a destination, it’s far more appealing than that cash-and-cachet-powered city, with an emphasis on good living and luxury that’s epitomized by this hotel (and many of its past regulars, who included the Duchess of Windsor). None of the 95 rooms at this palatial property , which first opened in the 1860s, is the same, and the décor is an eccentric mishmash that combines every era since then, from Victorian fripperies to sinuously streamlined Art Nouveau. The modern spa is a major plus, with its own full hammam and indoor and outdoor pools—though why not just take a swim in the lake, where the water’s disconcertingly clean?

Doubles from roughly $577.

Parilio Hotel, Paros, Greece

Parilio

Gary Portuesi of Authentic Explorations says that staying at this hotel is “like going to visit a Greek friend’s family on a lesser traveled island in the Cyclades, who transformed their traditional farmhouse to a luxurious resort.” Certainly, Paros is less well known than Mykonos next door, but it has the same sugar cube-pretty architecture offset with a less frantic pace of life. This 33-suite hotel sits right on the northeastern coast between Kolymbithres Beach—one of the most appealing and well run on the island, and just 20 minutes’ walk away—and the main fishing village of Naossa. Book in at the 430-square-foot Sun Suite, with its own private patio and private pool.

Doubles from roughly $295 per night.

Passalacqua, Lake Como, Italy

Passalacqua

Few hotels manage to become instant icons, but the newest property from Grand Hotel Tremezzo owner Valentina de Santis has pulled it off just a year after she rebooted a private villa from the 1780s on the shores of Lake Como as this 24-room hotel. “It goes above and beyond any other place in Italy,” says Jaclyn Sienna India of Sienna Charles—and she warns visitors not to oversleep and miss the exceptional maritozzi or whipped cream-filled donuts served up every morning at breakfast. It has the largest suite on the lake, too, in the 2,700-square-foot Bellini, named after the composer who once played the piano here as well as delightfully playful touches, like a series of tunnels that lead to the new spa, which is accessed by a secret staircase.

Doubles from roughly $2,660.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in North America & Caribbean

Aerial view of the upper Kennecott Glacier, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska. USA

New York? Los Angeles? Sorry, it’s all about the great outdoors for our travel masters and their discerning clientele. From five-star farms to ritzy ranches, you’ll want to pack your hiking boots for these escapes (or swap them for flip-flops if you are heading for a certain famed Caribbean society seat).

Ultima Thule, Alaska, USA

Ultima Thule

The property in eastern Alaska’s Wrangell-St Elias National Park began as a log cabin built by a nature-loving schoolteacher not long after World War II; it was his son, Paul and his wife, Donna, who saw the potential in building a full-scale lodge for those craving an Alaskan adventure with minimal modern-day interruptions (think no phone, TV or cell service). Fishing aficionados can expect memorable catches, especially salmon, from the rivers here. Come in fall if you’d like the chance to glimpse the Northern Lights. Adrenalin specialist Henry Cookson of Cookson Adventures recommends it without reservations. “The nearest paved road is 100 miles away, so you have the dramatic scenery all to yourself,” he says, noting that the 14-guest capacity makes it an ideal buyout for families or a group of friends. “We loved the Super Cub planes for an aviation experience like no other, flying through breathtaking mountain valleys and over glaciers.”

$12,500 per person for four nights, double occupancy.

Clayoquot Wilderness, British Columbia, Canada

Clayoquot Wilderness

This high-end camp in the remote forest of Vancouver Island sets a benchmark in barefoot luxury, with tented camp rooms that don’t skimp on conveniences (think heated floors in the bathrooms) that act as the perfect perch for adventuring round the untouched landscape: Expect days filled with whale-watching, bear-spotting, biking and rainforest trekking. Its isolation is core to its appeal, the hard-to-reach resort worth the 45-minute plane ride from the city. “Arriving by float plane is always exciting,” says Maury, “And we saw bears, whales, eagles and more as we took zodiacs around deserted beaches and sleepy backwaters in this extraordinary area.” Conservation is core to its mission, too: For more than 20 years, it’s worked with the government and local indigenous people to help bolster native salmon stocks in and around the waters here—the more of these fish found in the river, the better the overall health of the ecosystem.

Doubles from roughly $9,070 for three nights.

The Post Ranch Inn, California, USA

The Post Ranch Inn

Call it the Big Deal of Big Sur. The one time motel sitting on the PCH was reimagined as an upscale, 30-room hotel 30 years ago, and has become a mainstay of luxury hospitality in the three decades since (as well as adding 10 more rooms). Those are impressive, of course, slickly designed with their own private hot tubs, and the restaurant onsite serves up delicious, modern Californian food. But who comes to this region for the resort itself? The spectacular setting is its real draw, perched 1,200 feet above the crashing waves of the Pacific—think Big Little Lies meets Castaway . “Early one morning I breakfasted alone looking down the Pacific Coast blinded by the cobalt sea, aquamarine skies, and emerald green and taupe shaggy coastline,” Maury says. “Sunset was arguably even more spectacular.” There’s no issue too big or too small for the superstar GM here, Tim Lee, to tackle, she adds.

Doubles from $2,200.

Blackberry Farm, Tennessee, USA

Blackberry Farm

The original luxury Relais & Châteaux farm resort that lured private jets to East Tennessee, Blackberry Farm is still on top of its game after decades. Spread over 4,200 acres, this much-imitated , family-owned, working farm property offers just 68 five-star rooms. But farm means food, and food is what keeps guests coming back year after year. Lauded chefs Cassidee Dabney and Sarah Steffan run dinner spots the Barn (a James Beard Award winner) and the Dogwood, respectively, and if you want a taste of the action, you’ll have to check in because seatings for outsiders are rare. Thirsty? The Barn’s cellar stocks 9,000 different wine labels and 300 whiskies and brandies. “Their local flare and over-the-top high-end service deliver the ultimate in luxury,” says Jackson. “The property has redefined farm-to-table food, and the wine cellar, attention to detail in every room and the grounds are amazing. But for us, it’s the sense of place, warmth of the staff and southern hospitality that sets it apart.”

King Historic Rooms from $1,345 and suites from $2,245 per night.

Eden Rock St Barths, St Barthelemy

Eden Rock St Barths

There’s a frisson of je ne sais quoi to this 34-room hotel in the Francophone Caribbean, a burst of witty subversiveness amid the po-faced pantheon of luxury. Look for its signature scarlet color everywhere—think bright red rubber ducks and nail varnish in bathrooms—and décor that’s quirky and off-beat, with the latest wood paneled suites drawing direct inspiration from an old school superyacht. Credit superstar GM Fabrice Moizan with striking such a distinctive note, which combines an insouciant geniality with an obsessive attention to detail that means nothing’s ever overlooked. Clifford calls it “the best of the best on the island” right on St Jean Bay and recommends Villa Rockstar, the six-bedroom standalone penthouse suite , complete with its own full-sized private pool and recording studio.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in Central & South America (and Beyond)

Llamas wandering the mountains of rural Peru

Patagonia has emerged as a safari alternative for those who have been there and done that. But the varied hotels and experiences our western continental neighbors to the south (and the deep, deep south of Antartica) have to offer prove that there is a lifetime of stylish exploring to do in our own backyard.

Nekupe, Nicaragua

Nekupe

This is the first luxury mountain resort in this Central American country—its name means “heaven” in the indigenous Chorotega language—and Cookson recommends it unreservedly. “We love the views from this property overlooking Mombacho volcano, and the experiences—horse riding, quad bikes and near-endless mountain bike adventures,” he says. Don’t miss the rope course on property, created especially for guests, and request La Residencia, the four-bedroom villa that’s the standout option for overnighting. Think of the all-inclusive, 20-person spot as an African safari camp transported to the wilds of Nicaragua by its owners, Alfredo Jr. and Theresa Pellas—the 2,400-acre estate here is so vast, it’s more like a reserve in the bush. If you find it even more energizing than expected, credit the building protocols, enacted to feng shui principles to maximize its energy flows.

Doubles from $1,775.

Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, Cusco, Peru

Belmond Palacio Nazarenas

This 11-year-old, centrally located hotel sits in its own gardens, with rooms ranged around the property, the décor a winning collision between Inca-referencing stone walls and gold-heavy details that nod to its colonial-era origins as a private home. The redeployment of this onetime convent emphasized some of its most endearing quirks, too, retaining many of the murals painted on the walls—look for one suite, with a coffered ceiling festooned with pink roses, which is believed to have been where the Mother Superior would have slept. And no detail has been overlooked: don’t worry about fitful sleep at 12,000 feet above sea level in a suite at this hotel—oxygen’s piped into the 55 rooms to improve the air quality. Jean Sanz Bernay of JSB Journeys sums it up this way: “beautiful city views, personal butlers and pisco classes on the terrace.”

Doubles from $1238.

Tierra Patagonia, Chile

Tierra Patagonia

The 40-room, sleek modern horseshoe-shaped property sits right on the edge of Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, and it makes the most of its unique perch: floor-to-ceiling windows in every room, overlooking the Paine Massif provide an all-natural alternative to screens (there are no TVs or WiFi in rooms). Activities here are understandably outdoorsy: hikes, horse-riding, birdwatching, and boating aplenty. No wonder that for Kevin Jackson, it’s a regular booking. “The indoor pool here looks out over the Torres, and from the opposite side of the lake you could barely tell the property is even there—it blends in so well with the landscape,“ he says of the decade-old spot. The plot is so large it’s easy to transfer by helicopter, which Jackson recommends (the drive from Punta Arenas is a bone-aching four hours)—and bring a satellite phone, as all connectivity to the outside world here can be patchy.

Doubles from $1,950 with a minimum three-night stay.

Ibitipoca, Brazil

Ibitipoca

Four hours’ drive from Rio de Janeiro, think of this sprawling property as part country-estate, part-safari camp, a chance to decompress from daily grinds and reconnect with nature. It’s the brainchild of a Carioca businessman, Renato Machado, who started buying land here more than two decades ago, attempting to preserve the landscape around Ibitipoca National Park. Now, his project also employs more than 200 people caretaking guests at a cluster of reconditioned properties ranged around his 16,000 acres—the standout is Fazenda, an eight-bedroom terracotta-roofed lodge from the 1700s. Wilmot-Sitwell calls out this property as a pioneer in true sustainable luxury. “The local community has been part of the planning here since the purchase of the Fazenda do Engenho in 1984,” he says, “Their welcome is part of any stay in Ibitipoca, from cooks to guides to villagers.”

Doubles from roughly $459.

White Desert Echo Camp, Antarctica

Echo Camp

White Desert’s pioneering South Pole properties are a truly unique offering: dashing adventurer turned hotelier Patrick Woodhead has earned widespread plaudits for his impressive attempts to provide overnighting on the uninhabited tundra there. Clifford’s particularly fond of its third complex, Echo Camp , calling it “a space age, ultra-luxe, chic boutique eco-pod collective. Who says you have to rough it at the end of the world?” It only launched last season, but the fiberglass pop-up structures offer floor-to-ceiling views of the all-white world beyond; the camp’s amenities, including shower pods, lounge and dining room are in a separate communal area. Every guest commutes here via private jet from Cape Town—toast the experience on landing with a martini, chilled to perfection with 10,000-year-old ice.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in Oceania

Dawn on the water's edge of the Deepwater Basin, Milford sound in the south island, New Zealand

New Zealand’s Southern Alps are as hot with high-end travelers as they are cold. That’s thanks to the growing demand for eco-friendly excursions, which also benefits the greenest of Polynesian escapes.

Capella Lord Howe Island, Australia

Capella Lord Howe Island

A volcanic, reef-circled spec in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, Lord Howe Island is famous for its hair-raising 2,900-foot-long runway (just a fraction longer than St. Barth’s 2,100-foot shorty). Australians have long coveted this under-the-radar holiday hideaway, and its top stay is Capella Lodge , part of the five-star Luxury Lodges of Australia group (not to be confused with the Capella Hotel brand). “There is no mobile phone reception, bicycles are the preferred mode of transport and visitor numbers are strictly limited,” says Riggs. “There is so much to love about this place, including the thoughtful, friendly, first-name service with welcoming hosts, Libby and Mark that allows you to truly unwind in sophisticated yet relaxed surrounds.”

Villas from roughly $1,290 per night.

Flock Hill, New Zealand

Flock Hill

One of the most lauded openings of 2022, this authentic working sheep station sits on 36,000 acres of pristine South Island wilderness. While the first guests arrived last September, the homestead property actually dates back to 1857. Today, it can accommodate just one group of one to eight at a time. It comes with a private chef (who will fully customize your menus), glass-wall views of the Southern Alps and an action-packed itinerary of activities—including hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, caving and stargazing. You’ll probably want to board a helicopter, too. And when they say working farm they mean it: there are 11,600 sheep and 450 head of cattle here. You can even play farmer for the should you choose. “The clincher: It’s right next door to Castle Hill (Kura Tawhiti in Maori), also known as the birthplace of the gods to the pioneering voyagers from Easter Island (the Rapanui),” says Sandy Cummingham. “It was described by the Dalai Lama as the spiritual center of the universe.”

The Lindis, New Zealand

The Lindis

Proudly located at “the bottom of the habitable world“ in the Ahuriri Valley on New Zealand’s South Island, the Lindis is a five-suite, three-pod, five-star eco-lodge on 6,000 acres. So while the playful architecture and only-in-New-Zealand-quality food and wine inside make it hard to leave, guests here know that the real adventure here is outside its walls. “World-class activities are in abundance,” says Edward Granville of Red Savannah . You’ll find world-class fly-fishing, paragliding, e-bikes, stargazing and hiking. And if isolation is what you’re after, consider a night in one of the mirrored glass-walled pods. Ask managing director William Hudson to organize your helicopters to and fro, suggests Jules Maury of Scott Dunn .

The Brando, French Polynesia

The Brando

In the era of reef smashing, litter and Tiki Bars—long before “sustainability” became a marketing buzz word—the one-and-only original Hollywood activist Marlon Brando made it his mission to preserve the atoll of Tetiꞌaroa with a 99-year lease. Brando is no longer with us, but his mission lives on today in the form of a LEED platinum certified, all-inclusive, 36-villa resort , opened in 2014. Each of those villas — beyond sustainable construction – is built for quiet, so that when the windows are closed, you’re in your own private sanctuary. In fact, thanks to the space and privacy, it’s easy to feel like you’ve rented out a private island. “This is where the epitome of indulgence and sustainability come together seamlessly,” says Rigg. “You can enjoy the ultimate extravagances here with a conscience as clear as the waters that surround you.”

Villas from $4694 per night.

COMO Laucala Island, Fiji

Como Laucala

With just 25 villas, this 4.6-square-mile island claims to be one of the world’s largest private island resorts. Each of its “residences” features a lounge, private pool, sundeck and outdoor bath. But its most picturesque accommodation is Udu, which sprawls over multiple structures high on a rocky perch, surrounded by lush plants and overlooking the tropical sea. Private islands, of course, mean big names. In this case it’s the late Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, the co-founder of Red Bull, who bought the island back in 2003. “At this ultra-luxe tropical island resort every residence offers privacy and privilege—in addition to the totally instagrammable glass-walled resort pool!” says Rigg. “This is the kind of place where you can completely control the agenda.”

The Plateau Residence starts at $5,800 per night.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in Asia

High angle shot of beautiful green islands in the vast oceans of Indonesia

Naturally, on a continent the size of Asia, the flavors of its ultra-exclusive stays are as varied as its cuisines. From the palaces of Rajasthan to the modern miracles of central Tokyo, there’s a little something for everyone here.

Aman Tokyo, Japan

Aman Tokyo

Soaring over the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station, Aman Tokyo occupies the top six floors of a modern, 38-story, mixed-use tower in one of the city’s most central locations. Its 84 rooms and suites are some of the largest (if not the largest) in the Tokyo and they’re dripping with modern luxury. But that doesn’t mean that this hotel lacks a sense of place: Notice the engawa in the lobby—a wooden detail seen in the flooring of traditional Japanese residences that divides inside from out. There’s plenty more where that came from. “It’s the best option in Tokyo for travelers who want a world class luxury hotel that also incorporates traditional Japanese style and design,” says Ashley Isaacs Ganz of Artisans of Leisure .

Doubles from $1,875 per night.

The Oberoi Rajvilas, India

The Oberoi Rajvilas

The original structures on the site of this hotel 20 minutes outside the center of Jaipur—the “Pink City” capital of Rajasthan—dates back some 280 years. Today, the fort-like structure has 54 rooms and 14 extravagant tents and three sprawling villas. “It’s jaw-dropping opulence,” says Catherine Heald of Remote Lands. Hand-painted gold leaf walls by master muralist Ghanshem Nimbark adorn the walls and original paintings by famed contemporary artist Paresh Maity are hanging around. After you’ve taken that in, stroll the property’s extensive flower gardens for another show of maximalism.

Doubles from roughly $575.

Taj Lake Palace, India

Taj Lake Palace

Constant motion isn’t always a good thing. This majestic floating antique in the center of Lake Pichola in Udaipur (as seen in Bond flick Octopussy ) was constructed in the 1740s as a summer palace for Mewar royalty, and it still boasts the same white marble and the same magnificent gardens that it always did. While it has seen changes—including the creation of 65 rooms and 18 grand suites—its last update was way back in 2000. According to Tanya Dalton of Greaves UK there’s nothing to fix. “I find it hard to resist the charms of an antique palace hotel floating on a mirrored lake, surrounded by the romantic white city of Udaipur.”

Doubles from roughly $900 per night.

Ceylon Tea Trails, Sri Lanka

Ceylon Tea Trails

A Relais & Châteaux resort perched 4,100-feet above sea level in Sri Lanka’s Ceylon tea region, has just five historic tea planter bungalows. The period furnishing, cuisine and butler service are all designed to create a “non-hotel ambiance.” When you aren’t relaxing or drinking tea in the garden, you’ll be on the trails, as the name implies. Set out on foot with a naturalist-guided hike, or take in the scenery at a breezier pace by bike. “My favorite residence has to be Dunkeld Bungalow for the views,” says Alex Wix of Wix Squared .

Doubles from at $919, off peak.

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, Thailand

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle

Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle—where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Ruak and the Mekong Rivers—may have yesteryear connotations of opium production, but that’s a shame: It should be synonymous with natural beauty. The best way to take it in, according to the experts at Fischer Travel , is from the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle . “ It offers a unique, immersive experience, blending nature and luxury,” said Max Rosenthal of Fischer Travel. The resort’s 15 fully air-conditioned tents and “Explorer’s Lodge” are designed to create the atmosphere of a 19th century tropical expedition.

Tents from $2,500.

Banwa Private Island, Philippines

Banwa Private Island

While you may be able to rent one of the six beachfront villas a la carte, Banwa is also a true private island rental capable of housing up to 48 friends of one billionaire. Situated in the Philippines’ eastern Palawan province, the island is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Sulu Sea—ideal for diving or a casual snorkel. The villas — smart, modern, white structures with pools — sleep two to eight. Dinning here is al fresco and chef’s menus of world cuisine and Filipino classics change daily. “This is one of the world’s most exclusive private islands,” says Cookson. “It’s set in a marine-protected sanctuary and we love it for its incredible diving—it’s possible to scuba alongside whale sharks as well as encounter the rare Hawksbill turtle and black tip reef shark.”

Villas from $2,650 per night with a three night minimum. Full island rental rate upon request .

Amankila, Indonesia

Amankila

Whether you are in Bali to eat, pray, love or party, the “most dramatic entrance & soulful” way to do it is to check-in to Amankila , says Jaclyn Sienna India of Sienna Charles . One of Aman’s earliest resorts (it opened in 1992) and located in the off the beaten path in the hilltop village of Manggis, the property has 31 suites, 12 of which have private pools. Balinese touches in the Ed Tuttle-design abound and give the setting a “spiritual” and “enchanting” feeling, according to India. More important still: “The service and food is to die for,” she adds.

Doubles from $1,270.

La Résidence Phou Vao, Laos

Belmond La Residence Phou Vao

Luang Prabang is Southeast Asia’s “secret treasure,” says Alder . “By far its best hotel is the Belmond .” Set on a hilltop looking towards the historic city where crowds gather to watch the monks parade each morning, the resort contains just 32 junior suites and two suites within colonial-style buildings blended with traditional Lao touches. A stunning view from the swimming pool may be the property’s real showstopper. Alder adds: “With service that excels with ease, it’s located in the perfect spot over the Mekong to explore this most amazing city.”

Junior suites from $350 per night.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in the Middle East

Dubai cityscape at night. Illuminated urban skyline with Burj Khalifa. United Arab Emirates

Saudi Arabia has more five-star hotels in the pipeline than probably anywhere else on planet earth. But it’s not on this list (yet). Instead, perfect hotels in milder locales made the grade.

Museum Hotel, Turkey

Museum Hotel

Turkey is famous for its ancient underground cities, but this is your only chance to stay in one in style.  Opened in 2003, this Relais & Chateaux-endorsed “living museum” is built into ancient ruins and caves and is filled with historical monuments from the Hittite, Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods, which are all registered with the Nevşehir Museum. Located in Uçhisar at the pinnacle of Cappadocia — a UNESCO World Heritage Site near the famed Derinkuyu underground city — none of the 34-rooms at the resort are the same. Pick between, for example, the sexy “Harem Cave” or the “Divine Suite,” which has the best views in the region. “The biggest and best suites even include large swimming pools inside,” says Alder, adding that the resort is full of perks that will delight even those without an interest in ancient history. “The breakfast is amongst the best I’ve ever had in my life and the dinners are so good you won’t even want to consider another restaurant. They even have their own winery offsite, truly making the entire experience remarkable.”

Doubles from roughly $720.

Bulgari Hotel, Dubai

Bulgari Hotel Dubai

Widely recognized as Dubai’s swishest stay since opening in December 2017 on the manmade, seahorse-shaped Jumeirah Bay island, Bulgari managed to up the ante in this already ridiculously ritzy emirate. Designed by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel as an “urban oasis” resort, the hotel has 101 rooms and suites, 20 Bulgari villas, as well as, the brand’s first Marina and Yacht Club, capable of housing 50 boats. Everything here is on a grand scale, including the spa, which weighs in at over 18,000 square feet. “It has the best rooms, linen, spa design and facilities,” says Deborah Calmeyer of ROAR Africa. It also has the best Italian food in Dubai, with Michelin-starred chef Niko Romito under the toque.

Doubles from roughly $530 per night.

Ritz-Carlton Amman, Jordan

Ritz Amman

Since welcoming its first guests last June—with an opening ceremony starring His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein—the Ritz-Carlton Amman has become a fast favorite. Rising 20-stories high, and offering western styling views, the hotel features 228 guest rooms that claim to be the largest of any hotel in Jordan. For something even bigger, check-in to one of their 34 sprawling suites. The hotel’s interiors were designed by Wimberly Interiors London , which gave it its Art Deco flourishes, while a series of vignettes show the ancient monuments of Petra (the reason you are probably here). Further contextualizing this new property within the cradle of history are architectural features that serve as “modern reinterpretations” of Roman and Nabatean motifs.

Doubles from roughly $350 per night.

Alila Jabal Akhdar, Oman

Alila Jabal Akhdar

The mountain getaway in the Middle East’s most welcoming nation, Alila Jabal Akhdar is famous for its vistas and minimalist architecture. The property offers incredible views from every room. But while its location high in the Al Hajar Mountains, a two-and-a-half hour drive from Muscat, might sound intimidating for those who like their feet on horizontal ground, this 84 suite, two villas resort also offers literally grounded wellness programs. “It has fantastically challenging hikes, and a via Ferrata [climbing section] just in front of your room,” Wix says.

Doubles from $800 per night.

The Greatest Luxury Hotels in Africa

Africa, Botswana, Chobe National Park, African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) drinking at edge of water hole in Savuti Mars

There’s no where else like it, so go ahead and turn on the Toto. Southern Africa stole the show this time around, but we dare anyone to snoot at the Kenyan setting for Out of Africa .

The Silo, South Africa

The Silo

Rising 11 stories above Cape Town’s Victoria and Albert waterfront, this former grain silo complex (once the tallest structure in Sub-Saharan Africa) was transformed into a five-star hotel by starchitect Thomas Heatherwick . “The Silo is an all glass, luxury hotel offering the most spectacular, uninterrupted views of the city, Table Mountain and the ocean,” says Julian Harrison of the Royal Portfolio property. While it has hot trappings—28 rooms in six categories, including a 2,012-square-foot penthouse, and a sky terrace with obligatory rooftop pool—this is no mere hotel. It’s a cultural hub with buzzing bars and restaurants and even its own contemporary art museum ( Zeitz MOCAA ).

Doubles from roughly $955.

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve

It might be the private jet-based arrival—the hotel has its own, for quick shuttles to and from Fireblade FBO in Johannesburg. Then again, it could be the vastness— Tsawlu Kalahari sits on the largest privately protected wildlife reserve in South Africa, with the lowest ratio of guests to the wilderness, just 40 in total. Perhaps it’s the trio of camps dotted within its boundaries, each offering a different way to enjoy the bush: The standout’s undoubtedly the 10-person private villa, the Tarkuni Homestead, once used by the reserve’s owners, the Oppenheimers, as a private home. The clincher, though, per Maury, is the people. “Wendy in guest relations has been there for twenty-five years, and makes sure you lack for nothing,” she says, “And Freddy the head waiter and sommelier is charismatic and knowledgeable.”

Rates from 35,000 ZAR (around $1,800) per person per night.

Angama Mara, Kenya

Angama Mara

Angama ’s perch on a clifftop almost 1000 feet up overlooking the Mara make it one the best safari lodges in the world—make sure to spend time idling in the firepit-like sofa at this prime spot for unforgettable sunsets. “The views are untouchable,” Alder says. There are 15 standalone tented suites, each with wide, floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize those views. The décor is a departure from what’s become a safari default, all leather and colonial khaki—think of the scarlet-accented interiors here as African Art Deco, bursting with joie de vivre . But don’t worry, you can still indulge some throwbackish fantasies here—many scenes from Out of Africa were shot right here, and the hotel will set up lunch, on request, at the exact spot where the movie’s poster image was shot.

Rates from $1,490 per person per night.

Singita Pamushana, Zimbabwe

Singita Pamushana outdoor terrace

This hotel sits at the heart of 320,000-acre private Malilangwe Reserve in southeastern Zimbabwe, an already-dreamy locale bolstered by its specific perch. “Its setting is right on a hill, surrounded by boulders, a dam, yellow and gold masa trees and 1000-year-old baobabs,” says Calmeyer, who counts it among her favorites in the continent. The reserve teems with wildlife, including lions and leopards, elephants and hippos and several rhinos—both white and black, thanks to determined anti-poaching efforts, and it’s a particular highlight to track them on foot with the hotel’s guides. There are just eight suites, each with its own private infinity pool, plus one five-bedroom villa here, so there’s little risk of any wildlife spotting being ruined by a raft of jeeps clustered together.

Rates from $2,075 per person per night.

Miavana by Time + Tide, Madagascar

Time & Tide Miavana

The 14-villa property on its own private island off the northeast coast of Madagascar is a Brigadoon -like vision, shimmering into view on the helicopter transfer from nearby Diego Suarez as if out of nowhere. Villas are contemporary in style, with plunge pools, outdoors showers and sleek, aqua-accented furniture that’s more Saint-Tropez than Out of Africa. Roam around the island on quad bikes, or take a boat trip to another in the archipelago for tern-spotting and al fresco picnic; the water sports center is fully equipped, and the wind pattern here makes it especially appealing for surfers of all kinds. Don’t be deterred by the logistics of getting here: the hotel now runs its own private jet service from Johannesburg, an approximately four-hour jaunt on a Learjet 45. “A paradise on the edge of a world caught up in time from the original Portuguese explorers until now. Still untouched,” says Maury.

Rates from $3,400 per person per night.

Insider Today

While luxury travel destinations that look flawless on your Instagram feed can be underwhelming ( or downright disappointing ), some companies do successfully give wealthy travelers the high-end experience they're hoping for when they book a trip.

To that end, LTI - Luxury Travel Intelligence (a members-only digital resource for all things luxury travel) recently released its annual ranking of the top luxury hotel brands in the world. Turns out, the consensus on which chains are the best of the best has shifted drastically since the company's last list was released.

LTI's ranking (which focused only on brands with 10 or more properties) is based on 123 "touch points" relating to overall brand performance. The assessment process took place over the course of 12 months.

"It's all about a brand's ability to deliver: its passion, commitment, ethos and values, as well as the quality of its management and staff," LTI said in a release, adding that "continuing investment" in new and existing properties is another important factor.

LTI said that it decided not to adjust its typical ranking algorithm as a result of COVID-19, since "each brand's response is still unfolding."

Here are the world's best luxury hotel brands, ranked in ascending order.

Stockholm perfectly blends big-city life with elements of nature, thanks to its division over 14 islands, all connected by walkable bridges. After wandering through medieval Gamla Stan (Old Town), slipping into trendy bars and cafes in Södermalm — the Brooklyn of Stockholm — eating your way through Östermalms Food Hall , the city’s oldest food hall, make your way to one of the standout luxury establishments below.

A thoughtfully redesigned Art Nouveau building originally built in 1910 is now the home of the modern yet classic Miss Clara Hotel. Each of the hotel’s 92 rooms takes an outward-facing property philosophy, with the large dramatic windows and views of the bustling Sveavägen Boulevard as the focal point. The entire hotel is a contemporary take on a classic Art Nouveau style, with attention to detail down to the simplest design element. Marble bathrooms and clean Scandinavian design await.

The hotel’s restaurant serves modern Scandinavian-inspired cuisine and a 5-star brunch buffet that I’m still drooling over. Expect Nordic cheeses, freshly baked breads and a housemade granola bar.

Nobis Hotel

This 201-room hotel sits within Stockholm’s most exclusive and historic square, Norrmalmstorg, steps away from swanky shops, delicious dining and lively theatres. Still barring marks from the famous 1973 bank heist in which “ Stockholm syndrome ” became a household term (vaults located below the hotel), Nobis is rich with history, with a nod to its past seen throughout the hotel.

Scandinavian design takes centre stage, with deep hues and contemporary furniture throughout the spacious rooms. The atrium lounge is a showstopper, with an 82-foot ceiling and a 22-foot chandelier, made from thousands of small crystals. The gym offers a large steam room, in true Scandinavian style.

With multiple restaurants to choose from, the breakfast buffet stood out once again, serving a Swedish ecological menu, based on home-cooked foods and carefully curated products from local farmers and producers.

A 2-star Michelin restaurant with a focus on seasonal produce and gastronomic excellence. Designed by famed Swedish architect Jonas Bohlin, the restaurant perches on the seafront, in the heart of the striking Djurgården district. The brainchild of an award-winning duo, chef and culinary personality Tommy Myllymäki and restaurateur Pi Le, AIRA offers a multi-course experience that leaves a lasting impression, long after the meal. The experience may take you from the waterfront terrace to the lounge and finally, the dining room, designed to emulate the flow of the water seen through the large windows.

“The interior picks up the wave movement of the surrounding water in several details, as can be seen in the flowing curtains by Christine Ingridsdotter and Diana Orving or in Gun Gordillo’s neon lights in the entrance,” says Le.

The menu is seasonal, regularly updated and beautifully balanced. My favourite dishes included the signature dish, on the menu since inception: a quenelle of scallop, king crab and chervil and a playful take on langoustine four ways, one of Le’s favourite dishes. “We take something as simple as bread and soup and elevate it, the comfortable feeling of eating just bread and soup made with luxury ingredients gives you a feeling of recognition but still discovering new flavours,” says Le.

The wine pairing is a must and is served by expertly trained waitstaff who are all accomplished sommeliers. When asked what’s next for the restaurant, Le laughed, “hopefully three stars.”

Considered one of the “it” places in Stockholm amongst the young and hip, Ett Hem means “a home,” and that’s exactly what it feels like as you step through the front door. A beautifully designed, very high-end home, that is. “An Arts and Crafts building steeped in the Scandinavian aesthetics, where functionality meets beauty,” says the Ett Hem website. The 22-room private residence turned luxury boutique hotel was built in 1910 and offers guests and patrons a unique lodging and dining experience like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Guests are welcome to enjoy public spaces throughout the residence, from a large outdoor garden and terrace to the conservatory and open kitchen, where (if you’re lucky enough) you’ll be seated to watch the chefs prepare a multi-course tasting meal that may only be available that evening. The “menu” is written daily on a small chalkboard next to the kitchen, using seasonal and local ingredients. Every detail of the menu is carefully curated, much like every piece of art and accessory found in the hotel.

I feasted on a pithivier (a round pie originating from a French town of the same name) of Hungarian pig with black trumpet and morels, after snacking on cucumber dipped in a healthy serving of cream crue, whitefish and lumpfish roe, a variation of a dish found across Sweden.

Punk Royale

If you’re looking for a truly unique dining experience, look no further. Punk Royale is one of those “must be experienced to fully understand” places. When asked how to describe the experience, head chef Emil Algotsson says, “A restaurant that never sleeps. A restaurant that maintains an incredibly high level plus a little more. Controlled chaos, where the young meet the old.”

When walking into the dimly lit room, I noticed around seven or eight tables, though the servers mentioned they change the configurations regularly, based on bookings. The experience begins as soon as you enter — your phone is stashed away in a lock box as your water gets served from a vodka bottle. Christmas music blasts and a smoke machine signals the first course.

Expect an ever-changing multi-course (I believe we were served around 10-12 dishes) menu served with a theatrical flair. Your server may offer to spoon-feed you lobster with cream and shaved truffle, and you may drink sauterne ice wine out of a syringe (alcohol pairing is again a must, in my opinion, but you’d have lots of fun either way) while nibbling a foie gras torchon with a rose hip coulis smiley face. A favourite dish of mine was the rich parmesan soup with cheese puff and shaved reindeer heart. One of Algotsson’s favourites? Coined “Oysters (hot&cold)”, it’s a modern take on a classic fine-dining staple. “We always have oysters on the menu — eating an oyster is good but it’s not so much fun, so we take the oyster to a new place by poaching it and serving it warm in a good curry or beurre blanc,” says Algotsson.

Said with the same air of mystery as the restaurant itself, when asked what’s next for Punk Royale, Algotsson replies, “Those who wait will see.”

My note upon leaving the 2.5-hour meal? “Sensory overload in the best way.”

10 Best Fairmont Hotels In The World

Having already reviewed the best Fairmont hotels in Vancouver , we now spread our net and investigate the best Fairmont hotels in the world. These include Fairmont Ajman, Banff Springs, Beijing, Château Laurier, Chateau Whistler, Monte Carlo, Pacific Rim, Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, Vancouver Airport, Canada, and Waterfront.

1. Fairmont Chateau Whistler

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler has been concentrating on renovating its Suites. They have installed fireplaces (perfect for those cozy winter months), modern spa bathrooms with soaker tubs, and updated alpine decor. Plus, there’s now a generous built-in wet bar in the larger suites.

The rooms at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler are less impressive. They are more generic than 5-Star in feel. Most have decent-sized windows, but few are floor-to-ceiling. Most rooms don’t have balconies, which is a real disadvantage. The ones with a balcony only offer Romeo and Juliette style, so you can’t step out or sit out.

There’s nothing like swinging open your balcony doors to take in the summer air or stepping out barefoot onto a balcony covered in snow as the flakes are falling, only to return immediately to the warmth of your room so you can cozy up at your own private fireplace. For this joy, you have to pick the Four Seasons Whistler , I’m afraid.

The standard rooms at the Fairmont face backward, towards the car park rather than over the pool and the slopes. While they remain luxury rooms with 37m2 of space, they are nothing special, and if you are a luxury traveler, you may be disappointed if you get a car park view. If you want a fireplace in your room, only the suites at the Fairmont offer fireplaces.

The Fairmont offers small 40 mL bottles of Le Labo Rose 31 bath amenities in their bathrooms, which is standard for the Fairmont brand. These amenities smell nice but are not my favorites.

The big advantage of the Fairmont is that it’s located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain by the Wizard Express ski lift. This means you walk out of the hotel and onto the slopes. They have a ski concierge room to store your skis/boards/boots overnight, so you don’t have to carry everything back to the hotel. In this ski concierge room, there is sometimes hot chocolate available too.

The Fairmont pool is heated and is much larger than the Four Seasons, and although it has an indoor and outdoor section, it feels more traditional in design and lacks the boutique feel and interesting design of the pool at the Four Seasons. That said, it’s still a magical place to swim, and you can warm up in the hot tubs surrounding the pool.

The other big advantage of the Fairmont is that it offers a club lounge, which you can access by booking its Gold rooms. The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Gold floor accommodations offer jetted tubs and gas fireplaces in every room, along with upgraded hotel amenities and Bose sound systems.

The Fairmont Gold accommodations are located on the higher floors. Privileges include:

  • Private check-in and check-out
  • Exclusive Fairmont Gold Lounge for Fairmont Gold guests
  • Deluxe Continental Breakfast in the Fairmont Gold Lounge
  • All day coffee & tea service in the Fairmont Gold Lounge
  • Afternoon canapés & honour bar in the Fairmont Gold Lounge
  • Complimentary newspapers and personalized wake-up calls

Exclusive access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge is a true highlight for all of those with Fairmont Gold privileges. Relax fireside while enjoying a complimentary Deluxe Continental Breakfast, local newspapers, and magazines, catching up on email with a complimentary laptop computer, or simply unwind after a day on Whistler Mountain.

The Fairmont also has lounges and restaurants, but the overall feel is less intimate and more traditional than the Four Seasons. While the Fairmont is undoubtedly one of the best ski hotels in the world, the Four Seasons up the road is just that little bit better!

We have compared Fairmont Whistler to Fairmont Banff in more detail here:

Fairmont Banff Springs Vs. Whistler. Which Is Best?

Fairmont Banff Springs Vs. Whistler. Which Is Best?

Recommended Post In "Tips"

We have already compared Fairmont Banff Springs Vs. Chateau Lake Louise, now we compare Fairmont Banff Springs Vs. Whistler to decipher which is best. If you prefer the look of the Fairmont in Whistler you should also read our review comparing Four Seasons and Fairmont Chateau Whistler which are both the best hotels in Whistler. All these hotels have great spas, luxury rooms, and excellent restaurants and bars. Fairmont Banff and Whistler have warm outdoor pools and great Gold Club lounges.

2. Fairmont Pacific Rim

The Fairmont Pacific Rim is the best Fairmont in Vancouver and is also one of Vancouver’s best luxury hotels. The Pacific Rim and Waterfront hotels are within 100m of each other by the waterfront. The Fairmont Vancouver hotel is located in the city’s center, a 5-10 minutes walk away. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport is situated on the terminal building and is a drive from the center of Vancouver.

The Fairmont Pacific Rim and the Rosewood Vancouver are probably the two best luxury hotels in Vancouver. The Fairmont Pacific Rim is located at 1038 Canada Place Way, Vancouver V6C 0B9.

This hotel also has a main lobby bar, which is the place to see and be seen in Vancouver and is great for people-watching. It probably has the most stunning pool in Vancouver, surrounded by loungers and cabanas, and is a great place to hang out in the summer. Rounding the hotel off is an outdoor terrace, a garden, and the Botanist Restaurant, which offers a menu inspired by botany, organic farming, and sustainable sourcing principles.

While the Fairmont Pacific Rim and Fairmont Waterfront are both very solid properties, the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver traditionally was the worst of the three Fairmonts in central Vancouver. Still, a recent refurbishment, including the club lounge and new management, seems to be returning this as a contender for a great Fairmont choice in Vancouver. However, the best remains the Pacific Rim, which is a bit better in most respects. This “betterness” is typically reflected in its higher room rates.

As for dining and shopping, there are plenty of good options within a 20-minute walk. The hotel provides complimentary drop-off services in one of their BMW house car (7 series) on a first-come, first-served basis, and you rarely have to wait for more than a couple of minutes for a ride.

The lobby lounge is a really fun feature of this hotel as it turns into a bar at night and attracts some of Vancouver’s finest try-hards. It’s to people watch but can be quite lively and is certainly not a relaxing lounge bar to take the family or look for peace.

A Harbour View Room in the Pacific Rim is your best room choice from these hotels, although the Waterfront has a similar view. Pac Rim has more frills, a TV in the bathroom mirror, a virtual surround soundbar, iPad room controls, super fluffy bathrobes, more dining options, and a better gym.

Both the Gold lounges at the Pacific Rim and Vancouver Waterfront are great during the summer months since both have a fabulous outside patio and are two of the best club lounges in Vancouver .

3. Fairmont Kea Lani

Fairmont Kea Lani is a luxurious beachfront resort nestled along the stunning shores of Maui’s Wailea coast, offering guests an unparalleled Hawaiian getaway. Boasting spacious suites and villas with private lanais, the resort provides a serene retreat infused with elegance and comfort. Guests can bask in the warm Hawaiian sun at the expansive swimming pools or sink their toes into the soft sands of Polo Beach.

Indulgent dining experiences await at the resort’s award-winning restaurants, where guests can savor delectable cuisine while enjoying panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. With its world-class amenities, attentive service, and breathtaking surroundings, Fairmont Kea Lani invites travelers to experience the epitome of luxury and relaxation in paradise.

If you’re choosing between Fairmont hotels on the Hawaiian Islands, we have compared Fairmont Orchid vs. Fairmont Kea Lani .

Fairmont Orchid Vs. Fairmont Kea Lani. Which Is Best?

Fairmont Orchid Vs. Fairmont Kea Lani. Which Is Best?

Which hotel is best, Fairmont Orchid on Big Island Vs. Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui? We think Fairmont Orchid has a more beautiful setting and feels less busy. But if you want a better beach, a selection of pools, including an adults-only pool, and a more upscale feel, Fairmont Kea Lani may be a better choice. We'll go ahead and outline the differences in more detail below. Book your stay at either hotel via our luxury travel concierge for extra benefits and perks at both of these hotels. We should be able to offer you a brilliant deal.

4. Fairmont Banff Springs

The world-famous Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is a landmark in Banff, Alberta’s picturesque alpine town. Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies” has provided guests with legendary hospitality for over 125 years.

Fairmont Banff Springs offers all the amenities of a world-class resort, with 757 guest rooms and suites, superbly appointed Banff accommodations and attentive, personalized service. From cozy rooms tucked away in quiet corners of the castle to spacious suites with sweeping Alberta mountain views, Fairmont Banff Springs has the perfect guest room, suite, or Fairmont Gold accommodations for your Rocky Mountain getaway.

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel enjoys a very convenient location in the heart of Banff National Park, just above the Bow Falls and close to thermal springs.

The hotel features a large 32 m (105 ft) saltwater indoor pool is complemented by an indoor whirlpool, a kid’s wading pool, and an outdoor 20 m (66 ft) pool, which is filled with heated water and open year-round. There’s also an excellent Willow Stream Spa and numerous excellent restaurants. And let’s not forget the hotel’s magnificent golf course to exercise you between meals.

5. Fairmont Château Laurier

Fairmont Château Laurier is located in the center of downtown Ottawa and is minutes from its biggest attractions, including The Parliament Buildings, Rideau Canal, ByWard Market, National Gallery of Canada, Shaw Center, and the National Arts Centre.

Fairmont Château Laurier provides luxury accommodations in a magnificent downtown Ottawa setting, from cozy Fairmont Rooms to opulent suites. Guests seeking exclusivity will truly enjoy staying in a Fairmont Gold room or suite. Located on a private floor, Fairmont Gold is a ‘hotel within a hotel’.

The newly updated Fairmont Gold floor and executive club lounge , further solidifies Fairmont Château Laurier as Ottawa’s best luxury hotel. Fairmont Gold has been completely re-imagined and renewed at this Ottawa hotel. They have expanded to 69 rooms and suites, all of which are newly renovated, complete with modern details. The luxurious Fairmont Gold Lounge has been updated too.

Your Fairmont Gold experience begins the moment you arrive when you are invited to the private Fairmont Gold reception area located on the 4th floor. Here, your individuality is valued, your room preferences are honored, and your quick and effortless departure arrangements are anticipated. A dedicated club lounge team extends a friendly welcome in the exclusive Fairmont Gold Lounge and will arrange dinner reservations, limousines, and more.

Start your day off perfectly with a healthy and bountiful continental breakfast, including hot items. And throughout the day, you can enjoy Nespresso coffee, tea, fresh fruit, a fine selection of nuts and candies, and an honor bar (you have to pay for drinks). In the evening, complimentary canapés and desserts are served in a tranquil atmosphere.

Beyond the club lounge, this luxury Ottawa hotel offers valet parking at $45 USD per night, or you can self-park at 700 Sussex, an underground garage literally across the street from the hotel. It’s $31 USD per 24 hours and pay and display, so you can come and go as you, please. But you can only pay for 24 hours at a time, so you must return for a new ticket every day.

6. Fairmont Monte Carlo

The Fairmont Monte Carlo  is located perfectly, slap bang in the centre of Monte Carlo right next to the Casino. The sea view rooms & suites are literally built out into the bay, so your balcony is sitting on top of the water, and the views can’t be beaten. Watch the numerous fireworks displays in the summer, fabulous sunsets, and all the helicopters and boats that race in and out of the marina. When a cruise ship arrives, it comes in so close it can feel like it will hit the hotel!

The Fairmont Monte Carlo is immense, making it a popular conference hotel. Its atmosphere is less formal than the other hotels in Monte Carlo, which is advantageous for families and those without a designer wardrobe. Feel free to wander around in designer gear, or Bermuda shorts, and sandals with socks. Whatever you feel comfortable in, the staff here will welcome you, and you won’t feel out of place.

The rooftop pool at the Fairmont Monte Carlo is a highlight, with a beautiful view wrapping round from the Grand Prix hairpin to the harbor entrance. On the same magical 7th floor is the “Horizon Deck” Restaurant and Champagne Bar, which offers the same wraparound views, which are particularly stunning in the Mediterranean night. In the winter, Nobu remains open downstairs but not poolside. Equally, the “Horizon Deck” closes in the Winter, but the Sapphire bar is open 24/7 all year round.

Breakfast in the summer is served in the “Horizon Deck” restaurant on top of the hotel, where views and ambiance are one in a million – I saw a helicopter land on the deck of a Super Yacht right in front of me! There is also a huge spread if you don’t mind self-service.

All rooms are very similar in design and decor, but the views aren’t. If you are going for the sea view, request a room not looking over the multicolored 60’s hexagon. For a garden view, request a high floor. The low-floor garden view rooms can be dingy. I recommend the sea view suites in particular. Views don’t get a lot better!

The bathrooms are a little tired, but this is more than made up for with their gorgeous Labo Rose 31 amenities, which smell fabulous. The rooms can be a little noisy as the hotel is located in Monaco’s middle of the action, but we have always been moved without a problem if we have felt it necessary.

While this isn’t the best Fairmont in the world, it is in one of the best destinations in the world and has some of the best views in the world, so it’s definitely worth a try.

7. Fairmont Vancouver Airport

The second best airport hotel in the world is the Fairmont, Vancouver Airport in Canada is one of the best airport hotels in the world . It is the only airport hotel directly connected to Vancouver Airport’s International terminal, although plenty of other options exist on the airport’s grounds. I have found this airport hotel to be particularly good to get over jetlag when flying in from London. I then grab a taxi, Uber or bus up to Whistler for some skiing and stay at the Four Seasons Whistler .

The hotel is connected to the airport building and is situated right above the US departures area within a minute or two‘s walk from the luggage carousel. There is so much to love about this airport hotel, but the heavily soundproof floor-to-ceiling windows have to be a highlight, as he can watch the planes take off from your bed. Beyond the rooms is an indoor pool, health club, spa, and restaurants, including a jet sidebar for live music, tapas, cocktails, and globe@yvr, an award-winning restaurant and where you can take breakfast.

There are various rooms to choose from, and if you want a luxury boutique hotel experience, there are some newly renovated rooms on the 14th floor, which give you access to a complimentary club lounge. It is well worth paying the extra for a Fairmont Gold Room because of this club lounge access. Within the club lounge, you get a continental breakfast served, or you can have the complimentary breakfast delivered to your room if you are leaving before 6:30 am. There is a selection of hot and cold canapés and desserts in the evening. Non-alcoholic drinks are included within your room rates in this lounge, including espresso tea, coffee, soft drinks, and water, and there is an honor bar that sticks your spirits, wines, and beers available. By booking a Gold Room, you also get a daily turndown service, complimentary local calls within North America, complimentary BMW car service between the hotel and YVR’s south terminal, and a golf cart service within why they are the main terminal.

8. Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

Located just an hour and a half from San Francisco International Airport, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa awaits you. You’ve come to the right place if you are looking for pampering at its finest.

The expansive, meticulously maintained grounds lead you to the modern mission-style hotel where a staff anxiously sees to every detail during your stay. The staff’s unwavering attention to detail is apparent as soon as you enter the grand lobby, and everyone already knows your name.

Settle in, unwind, and be prepared to experience Sonoma as it was meant to be experienced. The only worry you’ll have during your stay is selecting which wine you’d like to enjoy with your main course…but then the staff is there to assist with that as well. It might be your first stay at Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, but as many past guests have found, it probably won’t be your last.

There are a variety of accommodations to select from to meet your needs, desires, or budget. The décor is a classic and elegant Provence style with a crisp and inviting color palette. Early morning activities might be a bit delayed as the beds are heavenly.

We like the Mission Suite, which offers a private outdoor patio or balcony. This room offers an ideal place to enjoy our room service breakfast on the patio each morning while discussing our day’s upcoming activities. The large seating area by the in-room fireplace is an additional suite perk. A soak in the tub large enough for two helps relaxation, and the lights set to dimmers create a warm and inviting ambiance.

There is so much to see and do in Sonoma that many people don’t find the time to laze about the pool, but I would recommend at least a leisurely morning dip or pre-dinner plunge to enjoy all that the hotel has to offer. The lounge chairs are the perfect spot to steal a little sun. Poolside dining at Water Tower Bar is also available should you want to grab a bite or enjoy a cocktail while catching some rays. The fresh organic smoothies are also worth trying (the mixed berry flavor was out of this world).

There are many world-famous restaurants in Sonoma, but you must look no further than the Fairmont to enjoy a Michelin-rated dining experience. The acclaimed restaurant Santé is on-site and ready to serve you one of the best meals you’ll ever have. The Cal-French cuisine is refined yet unfussy. If you hit the links at Sonoma Golf, you can grab a bite at the Golf Club Grill. Take in the view of the award-winning course while enjoying some classic California cuisine.

Willow Stream Spa is the crème de la crème experience you must enjoy while staying. Listed as one of the top 25 spas in the world by Travel & Leisure, it is no surprise why from the minute you arrive. As you step through the front door, the spa staff takes care of everything. Situated atop natural mineral springs, the spa offers detoxifying and cleansing mineral baths, the same springs that Native Americans claimed offered healing and medicinal powers.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn is a sensational choice for a true wine and dine experience to celebrate a special occasion, weekend getaway with friends, or romantic escape.

9. Fairmont Beijing

A 23-floor rose gold architectural landmark, rooms with cityscape views, and endless services to soothe you into the vacation mood, whether you’re traveling for a luxe getaway or for business. The Fairmont Beijing is a contemporary and charmingly unreal experience, one that should be on everyone’s bucket list. With indulgent suites, impeccable service, decadent décor, and authentic cuisine, you’ll surely find your every need met when visiting the Fairmont Beijing.

Offering guests a distinctive stay in the heart of China’s modern capital business center. Located in the business district, the hotel has easy access to popular tourist destinations such as Wangfujing Street and the entertainment center, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square. The Fairmont is close to the subway, ideal for exploring the rest of the spectacular city. Only a short walk away from the Tonghui River, which provides a breathtaking scenic view of the business district in all its glory and the Silk Market.

Guest feedback suggests that the Fairmont Beijing is among the best of all The Fairmont hotels worldwide, with personalized touches and impeccable service. With top-quality amenities, unique architecture, and excellent décor, your stay will be non-other than a deluxe, indulgent experience.

The Fairmont offers elite services, including their indoor heated swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna, a selection of 2 restaurants and 2 bars, a fitness center with techno gym equipment, personal trainers, and private yoga instructors at hand, as well as the Willow Stream Spa, which has been rated one of the best in China. You can be sure to unwind in the urban oasis that The Fairmont Beijing has to offer.

In total, the hotel offers 222 suites, each with air purifiers from Blueair, to provide the hotel with certified clean air and enhance the guest experience and well-being. From the deluxe rooms to the presidential suite, plenty of choices fit your specific needs, from budget to comfort. Guest rooms offer first-class amenities, including cutting-edge technology, hand-selected linens, and spa-inspired bath products, king-sized bed, oversized bathtubs, Wi-Fi, and a wondrous cityscape view of downtown Beijing. Other amenities include Easy mood light settings, daily newspapers, 24-hour in-room dining, AC, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The urban sanctuary of The Fairmont is one of the best-rated hotels in Beijing. Its spectacular interior and gold architecture breathe an unstoppable, lavish stay. Fairmont Beijing is an ideal choice offering comfortable, elegant accommodations and timeless attentive service.

10. Fairmont Ajman

The newest Fairmont flagship in the United Arab Emirates is The Fairmont Ajman. This immaculate five-star hotel currently comes in at under a third of the price of the Fairmont the Palm up the road. For this reason alone, it is worth considering.

Located in the emirate of perennial sunshine and stunning white sand beaches, Ajman offers a delightful contrast and a gentler pace of life set on a stretch of shoreline called the Corniche, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in opal hued and clear waters and soak in genuine Arabian traditions and hospitality.

Showcasing exotic design and sophisticated chic with polished textures using timeless palettes, the 252-room Fairmont Ajman fits its resort setting perfectly. Round seating and rugs bring in a local note to the aesthetic. Golden shades and delicate patterns add another piece to the design puzzle, while subtler touches, like an Oriental rug pattern on top of the tables, finish the statement with a quiet polish. Streamlined furniture in the guestrooms keeps the look effortless.

The hotel features seven dining venues, an expansive infinity pool with ample sun loungers and cabanas, a children’s activity facility and spa, and a fitness center. The seven meeting spaces include a 380-person capacity ballroom.
