My Ultimate Travel Guide to Kerala | Solo Female Travel

  • November 24, 2020
  • india , solo , travel , wanderer , wanderlust

Some people are complete water babies; they love beaches, lakes and everything aqua. Others love the land; hills, peaks and vast expanse of greenery. And others like me love both. And the best place to visit for the best of both worlds is Kerala. To make it even more exciting, you can travel solo to Kerala!

As a solo female traveller, what better place to explore than Kerala? Kerala is called God’s Own Country for good reason. It has repeatedly topped India’s HDI or Human Development Index for years now. It h as the best literacy rate in the country and ranks very high on the education and health fronts.

And due to its picturesque locations, Kerala is a major tourist attraction as well. Solo female travellers like me prefer to go to Kerala because it is one of the safest places to visit in India. It even won the award for best governed state along with Tamil Nadu and Goa recently. Read the blog if India is a safe place for solo female travellers  to know more.

The people of Kerala are SO friendly and welcoming. The locals are used to having tourists around, and will go out of the way to help you. Here’s a pro tip: try to talk to the locals in Malayalam (the local language) , and see the bewilderment on their faces! Look up a translator app on your phone. Even a few words like Namaskaaram (hello), Nanni (thank you) and Kshemikku (Sorry) will do. Many people are comfortable with English, but a little Malayalam will not hurt. If you’re travelling solo for the first time, here’s a blog on  how to beat all awkwardness and just kill it!

A land of Cleaner roads and denser forests

best place for solo travel in kerala

Apart from this, what I really love about Kerala is its general cleanliness. The state takes its commitment to the Indian government’s Swachh Bharat Mission seriously. The cities, towns and even the small villages are well-planned here. So if you are a solo female traveller who is a cleanliness freak, worry not. Kerala is the place for you. Ah, and I cannot stop raving about the drainage system. Even on the worst of rainy days, this system ensures that the roads are not flooded.

I am not exaggerating when I say that most of Kerala – even the habitable lands – resemble dense forests. I had to count the number of barren lands I encountered and trust me, they were very few.

When should you visit Kerala?

The best time to visit Kerala is the monsoons (June-September). The green expanse of land adorned with glorious showers make for great viewing. The fragrance of the earth as the first drop of rain falls on it – called petrichor – is incomparable to anything. I liked stepping out on rainy days (with a raincoat on – OBVIOUSLY). But I also loved sitting in my room, looking out my window and marvelling at nature’s beauty. Of course, with a steaming hot cup of chaaya (milk tea) in my hand. Such was my Kerala experience, and being an introvert did not stop me from enjoying every bit of it. Are introverts good at solo tripping?

There are many wonderful places in God’s Own Country, no doubt. But these are my picks for top five cities to visit in Kerala for solo female travellers:

 1. Alappuzha

best place for solo travel in kerala

Hear the word ‘Alappuzha’, and what immediately comes to mind is the backwaters. The backwaters are an intricate system of lakes, canals and other waterways that eventually meet the Arabian sea, the backwaters are a must-visit place in Alappuzha.

You can take a relaxing ferry ride, or better even, rent a houseboat across the backwaters. The houseboats in Alappuzha are a tad expensive to rent, but totally worth it. It is literally a house in a boat – with wonderfully furnished rooms and bathrooms, and even air conditioning!

On my solo trip to the Alappuzha backwaters, I rented an entire houseboat for myself. The staff of the houseboat were friendly and made me feel comfortable. They served me the local cuisine – complete with hot favourites such as the Karimeen pollichathu (Baked pearl spot), Pepper duck and Spicy fish curry.

I absolutely enjoyed the scenic beauty of the Kuttanadan landscape! Each of the homes are like little islands and you need to row yourself to get to them. I could not believe my eyes when I saw this – I did not know that such a thing was even possible!

If you take a trip to Alappuzha as a solo female traveller, then you should surely go to Vembanad Lake. Fishing is the main source of livelihood here. If you are up for it, accompany the local fishermen on a fishing trip like I did. The precision and skill with which they catch the fish is just mind-blowing!

A non-touristy thing I did in Alappuzha is observe the coir-making process and even be a part of it. You must be wondering what coir is. It is a type of fibre made using the husk of the coconut. Not many tourists are drawn to Alappuzha’s rich coir industry. You may just get an opportunity to witness something unique after all. The entire process – from defibering to extraction is marvellous!

 2. Kumbalangi

best place for solo travel in kerala

Before the release of the 2019 Malayalam movie Kumbalangi Nights (which was even critically reviewed by the BBC), Kumbalangi was not well-known. Kumbalangi is a small island-type of-village in Kochi. If you like small, quiet hamlets teeming with life, then Kumbalangi should be on your travel list as a solo female travelling to Kerala.

Kumbalangi’s highlight is its fishermen and their fishing. they do not use normal fishing nets for this, but rather Chinese fishing nets. They are called Cheena Vala in the local language, Malayalam. They are fixed for some time on the edges of the water body instead of being thrown at the time of fishing. Dozens of Chinese fishing nets adorn Kumbalangi’s shoreline and they are a sight to behold.

The mangrove forests in Kumbalangi are another crowd-puller. As a solo female traveller, you will need a guide or a local to take you inside these thick forests. I suggest you do not go alone even for the sake of adventure because of wild animals. Mangroves also have a lot of leeches and other small insects, so better cover up! Wear boots and full-length clothes if you can. Many organisations do ‘mangrove walks’ in Kumbalangi now, so you can just sign up for them easily.

As a solo female traveller on a trip to Kumbalangi, you may not find fancy places to stay here. However, you can always bet on good homestays in the region. Always look for Google reviews before you book a homestay. Enquire about the availability of services such as laundry and steam iron beforehand. If they are not available, you may have to look for other local options.

If you like finger food, the thattukada (small eateries) in Kumbalangi are the right place for you. They serve tasty seafood with local catch from the sea. Fried fish with local masala, crab roast, deep-fried squid and prawn curry are some must-try dishes here.

An exciting non-touristy thing I did in Kumbalangi is enjoy the ‘sea sparkle’ in the waters there. The sea waters emanate a unique fluorescent light due to the presence of bioluminescent algae. This is nothing unusual for the locals in Kumbalangi, but it was a never-seen-before sight for me! I waded through the shiny waters all by myself and enjoyed some ‘me time’.

best place for solo travel in kerala

Cherai is the ultimate destination for beach lovers in Kerala. It is unlike the busy, always-so-crowded Marina beach in Kochi city. You will love Cherai especially if you are a solo female traveller because of the serene and calm atmosphere.

Cherai does not have any touristy monuments or buildings to visit. What makes it special is the vast beach surrounded by rocks. It is one of the cleanest beaches in Kerala which follows a strict no-plastic policy. Why? Because of dolphins! Who does not love dolphins? Dolphin-sighting is a common pastime in Cherai.

If you love taking photographs or love sketching picturesque locations, then you should go to Cherai. The sunrise and sunset, with fishing boats on the horizon, are just perfect for this purpose. If you wake up early enough, you can catch the sight of the fishermen loading the fresh catch into piles to sell them.

I expected a lot from the Cherai cuisine, but was a little disappointed to find out that most dishes lacked salt in them. Especially in the dishes made of fish. I asked the proprietor of the property I was staying in about his and he said people use less salt in general in the area. I wonder why, to this day. If you are from the area or know anybody from Cherai, could you let me know why?

I also noticed that there is saltness that lingers in the air at Cherai so I suggest you carry a scarf with you. Or else the wind might ruin your hair. And a bad hair day is not a good start to anybody’s trip, right?

A non-touristy thing I did at Cherai was to give someone’s pet dog a walk! A tourist was looking for some help with walking her dog as she was carrying fresh fish from the Munnambam harbour. I offered to help her out (for selfish reasons as I love animals). I felt right at home in a strange land. A little kindness does not hurt anyone.

4. Thrissur

best place for solo travel in kerala

Elephants, temples, celebrations. These are what the cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur, embodies. If you want a slice of the Kerala festive spirit, then you should visit Thrissur around May. This is when the famous Thrissur Pooram, the annual festival of the Thrissurkar (People of Thrissur) happens. Mighty tuskers adorned in silks sway in unison to the traditional percussion instruments. People get immersed in the music and forget themselves. Bazaars are put up in the famous Sakthan ground, and everybody – from children to elders rejoice. It is nothing like anything you have seen before, mark my words. As a solo female traveller on a trip to Kerala, the Thrissur Pooram has to be on your must-visit list.

The sites where the Pooram happens – the Vadakkumnathan Temple and the Paramekkavu Temple – are tourist attractions in themselves, even on a regular day. They are two of the oldest temples in all of Kerala. Getting up before dawn and taking a trip to the temple fields will give you a sense of inner peace. You could also chat up with the locals to understand the meaning behind the rituals. They can also give you a brief history of each temple and why they came to be built on that particular piece of land.

Thrissur is nothing without the world-famous Swaraj Round or Thrissur Round. It is the second-largest roundabout in the whole world and the second in South Asia. It is 2 km long and connects all the major commercial hubs in Thrissur. The Thrissur Round is also special because it is the spot where the famous Puli Kali (Tiger Show) happens. It takes place during the Thrissur Pooram.

Thrissur has some of the most iconic restaurants in Kerala. If you are a die-hard foodie like me, you should head to Bharath Hotel in Thrissur. Though it is called a ‘hotel’, it is not one. It is a restaurant. It is an Indian habit to call a restaurant hotel. Bharath Hotel is undoubtedly the best vegetarian restaurant in Thrissur. Fluffy pooris, crispy dosas and smooth thayir vadai (curd vada) are its specialties. If you love Biryani as much as I do, you should go to Sapphire Hotel (again a restaurant, not a hotel). The meat is deep-fried before being baked with rice and spices. Simply irresistible!

I did an exciting non-touristy thing in Thrissur. As I was passing through Swaraj Maidan, where elephants usually stop before their next festival or event, I got an opportunity to give a bath to a big elephant. I casually asked the mahout if I could pat the elephant. That is when he told me that he was going to bathe the tusker. I asked if I could join in and what followed was great fun. It was kind of scary at first, but I understood what a majestic creature the elephant is! Well, there is a first-time for everything I guess.

best place for solo travel in kerala

Travelling to Kerala as a solo female, but Munnar is not there on your list? Then there is something awfully wrong with your list! Hills stations are popular for their pleasant weather and erstwhile British charm, and Munnar is no different. It is the crown on the head of the beautiful district of Kerala that is Idukki. Temperatures never extend or go below 20 degrees in Munnar and that is why it is an evergreen place to visit. Suppose you want a place to relax and rewind during the unforgiving Indian summers – go to Munnar!

If you like a hot cuppa, then the tea gardens at Munnar should be the place to go first. You could wear the hat of a fine tea sommelier for a couple of hours and taste the finest teas. the local tea pickers could show you how a typical day is for them, and you could do some picking too. Trekking around the hilly areas is a great option too, especially for solo female travellers to explore places on their own.

Water falling with a rush of intensity has always fascinated me. And I love water bodies like dams. If water makes you happy too, then you should head to Munnar’s very own Mattupetty Dam. You could take a walk along the top of the dam or do some boating. The locals are very friendly at the dam and may even teach you a boating trick or two. If birdwatching is of any interest to you, you may be pleased to know that the dam is home to many indigenous birds and animals. Some of the wildlife is also endangered, so make sure you do not overstep boundaries while interacting with them.

If you cannot get enough of wildlife, then the Eravikulam National Park is just the place for you. It has a bit of history attached to it as it is Kerala’s first national park. It is home to the very famous Lion-tailed macaque and the Indian Gaur. You can also personalise your tour to the park with your very own tour guide for a truly unique experience.

Some tips to keep in mind

Travelling to Kerala as a solo female tripper can be very exciting. However, adhering to a few pointers can make the difference between a good journey and a great journey. Note the following before embarking on the ultimate journey to Kerala:

  • Always be on your guard. If you are feeling ‘meh’ about your first solo trip, here’s a blog  on my first solo travel experience . As a solo female traveller on her way to Kerala, you need to know the local helpline numbers in Kerala. Dial 1090 for the Crime Stopper Helpline and 1961 for general inquiries.
  • Kerala is very humid – whether it is pouring heavily or it is burning hot. So do not choose synthetic fabrics. Go for natural ones like cotton, soft silk or linen.
  • You need special permission to enter certain places. So enquire about the place you are visiting beforehand.

kerala solo female

  • Culturally, people are averse to revealing clothing in the state. So being a little modest will not do you any harm.
  • Always watch your step in Kerala. I mean this literally. As much as we love dense vegetation and forests, we should also be wary of poisonous snakes. Do not walk in dark spots without a flashlight in hand. Do not forget to carry these important things too.

A 7-Day Kerala Itinerary (Solo Female Traveler Approved!)

A Seven-Day Itinerary for Kerala, India Featuring Beaches, Backwaters and Tea Plantations

Kerala is one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet, and my Kerala itinerary will help you see the most spectacular places in this region in just seven days.  This is the exact route that I followed while I was traveling as a solo female in South India, but the only difference is that I stayed in the region for several weeks, and I know that not everybody has that much time.

I have seen other Kerala itineraries that have you moving between different cities and towns every night, but that’s not my preferred travel style. I like to take things more slowly, so I have time to wander, explore and get immersed in the local culture. India is one of those places where everything moves impossibly quickly and impossibly slowly at the same time, and this itinerary has enough flexibility to accommodate those ebbs and flows.

best place for solo travel in kerala

Day 1 – Arrive in Kochi

See the Chinese Fishing Nets in Fort Kochi on a Kerala Itinerary

The first stop on your Kerala itinerary will likely be Kochi, where you can fly into the Cochin International Airport. From there, it’s almost 90 minutes by taxi to the historic Fort Kochi district, so factor that transfer into your plans for your arrival day in Kerala.

Spend some time strolling around the quiet historic center of Fort Kochi, which is infinitely more peaceful than most of the other cities you’ll visit in India. Stop at Saint Francis Church, which was the original resting place of Portuguese explore Vasco de Gama (now he rests in Belem , Portugal). As sunset approaches, head to Vasco de Gama Square to see the famous Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the skyline.  End your night with a leisurely dinner.

Where to Stay in Kochi

The guesthouse where I stayed in Kochi is now closed, but it was in a great location. Some nearby properties with very good reviews include Sajhome Fort Kochi and Bastian Homestay . As a solo traveler, I liked staying in guesthouses where I could get recommendations from the local owners and meet other backpackers.

If you’d prefer a more upscale hotel, there are two luxury properties right on the waterfront in the Old Town. Forte Kochi is a historic heritage hotel, and nearby Neemrana’s Tower House (part of a nationwide group of boutique hotels) has antique-adorned rooms around a beautiful outdoor pool.

Where to Eat in Kochi

There are lots of cute little restaurants in Fort Kochi, many of which are concentrated around Princess Street.  Here are a few you might want to check out:

  • Tibet Kitchen – I really like Tibetan food, and this restaurant near the Kerala Kathakali Center does it really well. I recommend the thukpa (noodle soup).
  • Kashi Art Cafe – This art gallery doubles as a delicious restaurant with international flavors ranging from vegan breakfast platters to hummus and pita.
  • Anantha Bhavan Inn – This pure veg restaurant gets great reviews for affordable set-price meals served on banana leafs.

Day 2 – Kochi

Kathakali Dance Show at the Cultural Center in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India

The highlight of your second day in Kochi will be a performance at the Kerala Kathakali Center, where you can see the traditional masked dances and musical performances of the region.  Book your tickets in advance, and be sure to show up for the early seating where you get to watch the performers apply their elaborate makeup.  You’ll need to be at the theatre around 4:45 pm, so plan the rest of your day accordingly.

I would recommend working with your accommodation to hire an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) driver for the day. Tell him what you’d like to see and he can plan a suitable route.  Some spots to consider include:

  • Mattancherry Palace – It’s not necessarily the most palatial palace you’ll ever see, but it is famous for its interior murals. It’s closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so I didn’t make it inside.
  • Jew Town – That’s the actual name of the neighborhood just south of Mattancherry Palace. There’s a sixteenth-century synagogue here, along with antique shops and a few quaint cafes.
  • Magic Pigeon Ceremony – Every day, around noon (arrive a bit early) the pigeons who reside at this Jain temple preform a “magical” ritual where they fly in circles around the temple three times before descending to be fed by worshippers and visitors.
  • Dhobi Khana Public Laundry – I could have spent all day at this massive public outdoor laundry facility. Seeing people wash their clothes the same way it was done a hundred years ago is a stark reminder that India is not a fully-developed country.
  • Bishop’s House and the Indo-Portuguese Museum – If you want to learn more about Portuguese colonialism in Kerala, visit these two spots near the Fort Kochi Beach.
  • Jail of Freedom Struggle – This small museum, situated in the local police station, tells the stories of the local people who resisted British colonialism and fought for Indian independence.

With a stop for lunch that should be more than enough to fill your day before the Kathakali show.  After the show, go out for a relaxed dinner. I’m a vegetarian, but if you’re not then you’ll probably want to try one of the local fish curries made from the daily catch.

Day 3 – Kochi to Alleppey

Alappuzha Lighthouse in Alleppey Kerala India

The second stop on your Kerala itinerary will be Alleppey (Alappuzha in Malayam). I did the trip by taxi and the drive was absolutely, unbelievably beautiful. Wikipedia calls the land here a “narrow landform”, not an island or a peninsula, and for most of the trip you get these spectacular jungle and sea views. I think that most of the buses drive further inland, so if there’s room in your budget do consider a taxi (and negotiate a bit of extra money for some photo stops en route).

Upon arrival, work with your accommodation to organize a boat cruise for the following morning. Then, walk towards Alappuzha Beach, a long stretch of golden sand that is popular with both locals and tourists. It’s possible to swim here (and it looks quite clean) but as a solo female traveler I didn’t feel comfortable going in solo, so I just waded in up to my knees. Even that caught the eye of quite a few local men!

While you’re at the beach, ascend the striking lighthouse, which dates back to the 1860s. You’ll get panoramic views of the beach and the town, and a sneak peak at some of the canals you’ll sail down tomorrow.

If there’s still time left in the day, you can walk or take an autoricksaw to the Mullakkal Market, a bustling shopping street (be careful of the traffic!). The nearby Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple is 500-year-old Hindu temple built in the typical style of Kerala. People come from around India to see the famous idol of the goddess Durga that is kept inside.

Where to Stay in Alleppey

I chose to stay in a hostel in Alleppey because I was hoping to connect with other travelers for a shared backwaters boat tour. I stayed at goSTOPS Alleppey , although at the time it was under a different name. I had a spacious private room, but it ended up being hard to meet other travelers as there wasn’t a common area.  When I went out for dinner I noticed that Zostel Alleppey looked busy, with lots of foreign travelers mixing and mingling in the common areas.  I wish I’d stayed there, even if the reviews aren’t quite as good.

If you want something a bit nicer, there are some lovely beachfront homestays on the beach, just north of the lighthouse. I’d start my search with Neela Waters or Asthamaya Beach Homestay .

⭐ You can also spend one or both of your nights in Alleppey on a houseboat!  This tour is rated 4.9/5 and includes a houseboat cruise through the backwaters from noon until 9:00 am the next day. It includes pick-up in Kochi. ⭐

Where to Eat in Alleppey

Unsurprisingly, Alleppey is known for its fish dishes. Ask your guide or your hotel where they recommend going for great fish and seafood. As a vegetarian, I can recommend these spots:

  • Hotel Aryaas Vegetarian Restaurant – When the staff at my hotel found out I was a vegetarian they put me in an autorickshaw and sent me to this pure veg restaurant, where they just kept putting more and more and more food on my plate. I was the only foreigner and I had lots of fun.
  • Cafe Catamaran – A fun and trendy beachfront restaurant that mostly caters to foreigners. The menu has a combination of Indian and international dishes.
  • Cafe Paradiso Espresso – Right by the pier where you catch the boats into the backwaters, this eclectic cafe does great coffees, juices and sandwiches.

Day 4 – Alleppey Backwaters

Kerala Backwaters Near Alleppy in South India

I visited India as part of an eight-month around-the-world trip, and when I think back to the top three most memorable experiences from the trip, my day spend sailing through the Alleppey backwaters ranks right up there. Truly, it is like you’re in the Jungle Cruise.

It’s possible to cruise the backwaters entirely by public ferry, but I don’t know how a foreigner could do that and not end up lost in a distant canal with no way to get home that evening. Routes and schedules for the ferries that sail through these waters are hard to find, hard to read and nearly impossible to actually confirm. So, the safest, easiest and most comfortable way to spend a day in the Kerala backwaters is through an organized boat tour. Most of these tours will start on the public ferries, and once you’re well into the canals you will switch to a canoe or kayak that is paddled by a guide.

Your accommodation should be able to help you book a tour, as long as you give them a day or two of notice. The tour will start in the early morning at the jetty, and will likely include a stop for lunch (we stopped in a local home) and at least one other stop to buy cold drinks and snacks. The rest of the time you’ll be sailing through the backwaters, taking in the beautiful views, watching people who live on the water go about their daily lives, and waving at people passing on other boats.

I can’t recommend this experience enough, and even if you don’t have a full week I think it’s worth spending just two or three days in Kerala so that you can include this on your India itinerary.

Day 5 – Alleppey to Munnar

Elephant Crossing in Munnar, Kerala

The final stop on your Kerala itinerary will be Munnar, a hill station in the nearby Western Ghats mountain range.  I took a bus directly from Alleppey to Munnar, but if the schedules have changed you may need to backtrack and change in Kochi.

You could also make the trip in a taxi for about $50 USD – it’s expensive because you’ll probably have to pay for the driver to go both ways, as he’s unlikely to get a fare back. Still, if you’re in a group it cuts the travel time by almost half, and you can stop for photos at some of the waterfalls on the way up.

You’ll probably arrive in Munnar in the early afternoon.  Get checked into your hotel, grab a light meal and then head to the Tea Museum. Here, you can learn about the history of the tea industry in the region and see how tea leaves go from field to cup. The tea museum is owned by Tata, an Indian conglomerate, and once you’ve visited you’ll start noticing the Tata name everywhere (even when you’re back home).

The center of Munnar is mostly for tourists, with shops selling expensive teas, spices and souvenirs. Feel free to browse around a bit before or after dinner, but retreat to your hotel early so that you’ll be ready for a big day tomorrow.

Where to Stay in Munnar

In Munnar, I stayed at Greenview Holiday Inn . It’s about 500 meters (slightly) downhill from the town center, but it has the added bonus of being quiet. The staff here helped me book my treks and tours to the surroundings.  Nearby, there is also Maharaja Cottage and SMM Cottage , which both also have good reviews. All three of these properties are basic, no-frills guesthouses.

If you’re looking for something fancier, you have to go further away from town. Blackberry Hills Nature Resort and Spa looks lovely, and the staff can assist with transportation into town for sightseeing and restaurants.

Where to Eat in Munnar

If you’re getting tired of eating vegetarian food, you’ll find more meat dishes in Munnar as many of the local restaurants are owned by Muslim families who don’t adhere to a vegetarian diet. Either way, you might want to consider these Munnar restaurants:

  • Saravana Bhavan – You’ll find these vegetarian restaurants across India, and the location in Munnar has some great dishes (you have to order their special, towering, cone-shaped dosa).
  • Rapsy Restaurant – I’m a vegetarian so didn’t come here, but my hotel recommended it for big portions of meat-based curries (including beef, chicken and seafood).
  • Tea Tales Cafe – If you’re missing Starbucks, this cafe has lots of sweet coffee drinks served hot and cold.

Day 6 – Munnar

Hike Through the Tea Plantations in Munnar, Kerala

There are several different ways to spend a full day in Munnar.  I was here for a few days and organized all of my excursions through my guesthouse – chat with them when you’re checking in to see what is available for the next day.

I spent one full day hiking in the hills around Munnar.  Although the hike was long it was not overly strenuous, and the views were beautiful. We got to see locals really working in the tea plantations (not the sanitized version you see in the Tea Museum) and it really gave me a new appreciation for the hard labor that goes into harvesting tea. We also saw some elephant droppings, but unfortunately we didn’t see any elephants on our trek.

Another day, my guesthouse organized an autorickshaw driver to take me on a full-day sightseeing tour . He took me through the tea plantations and up into the hills, all the way to the Top Station (the highest point) and the border with the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Unfortunately it was quite foggy during my visit so the views were obscured, although this made the high-speed return drive a white-knuckle experience I will never forget!

If the weather is good you can also do one of a few different sunrise hikes from Munnar. These begin with a 4:30 am Jeep or autorickshaw ride to the trailhead, followed by a short trek to a beautiful lookout point where you can take in the views with a cup of steaming masala chai.

Be aware that even in the dry season, Munnar can be cold and damp due to its altitude. You’ll need warm clothes, and I would personally recommend hiking boots (or other shoes with non-slip soles) for any walking on trails outside the town center. I was just wearing my Nike running shoes and there were a few close calls.

Day 7 – Munnar to Kochi

Cute Cat in Kerala

I couldn’t find a photo of the bus that I took from Munnar back to Kochi, but I did find this photo of a very cute kitten underneath a motorcycle, and motorcycles have wheels, and buses have wheels, so it’s practically the same thing! 😉

From Munnar you will probably need to end your Kerala itinerary by traveling back to Kochi, either to catch a flight or to get on a train or bus to your next destination.  There are sleeper buses that travel from Munnar to both Bangalore and Chennai overnight, but I can’t imagine they would be particularly comfortable.

Make sure to follow along the drive on your phone using Google Maps (if you’re low on data you can download the offline map beforehand).  You probably noticed the waterfalls on your way up – now is your chance to get photos on the way down!

When you get back to Fort Kochi, end your trip to Kerala with a relaxing massage and skincare treatment at an Ayurvedic health care center like Ayushveda Spa or Ayurveda Sanctum . This will help heal your sore muscles (whether that’s from yesterday’s hike or yesterday’s bumpy autorickshaw ride!) and relax you before you embark on your next adventure!

8, 9 or 10 Days in Kerala

If you have more than seven days in Kerala, there are are few different ways you can extend my recommended Kerala itinerary:

  • If you didn’t do the overnight houseboat tour in Alleppey , that would be the first thing I added to my itinerary.
  • Further down the coast, Varkala is famous for its cliff-lined beach and a 2000-year-old Hindu temple
  • Periyar Tiger Reserve is about 90 kilometers south of Munnar, and by joining a guided tour of this national park you could see more than 60 species of mammals including elephants, tigers and leopards

While you’re in South India, I recommend spending at least one week at an Ayurvedic yoga retreat .  The one that I visited was located in an Ayurvedic doctor’s family-run guesthouse and featured vegan meals, daily Ayurvedic treatments and daily excursions around the region.

If you’re hesitating to book a trip to India, I can quell some of your worries with my India Travel Q&A .  I wrote down my questions before I traveled to solo to India, and then at the end of my trip I went back and answered them all.

relaxing Kerala tour with Cochin, Munnar and Alleppy as our destinations. The experience was simply breathtaking. From the moment we arrived in Cochin, we were welcomed with warm hospitality and felt like we were home. The city of Cochin was so beautiful and full of life. We visited the ancient Jewish synagogue, the Dutch palace, the Chinese fishing nets, the St. Francis church and the Bolghatty palace. We then moved on to Munnar, which is situated in the middle of lush green mountains. It was a beautiful sight to behold. We went on a trek through the tea estates, visited the Mattupetty dam and also went on a boat ride in the Periyar river. It was a perfect way to relax and take in the beauty of nature. Our final destination was Alleppy. We spent our time here enjoying the houseboat cruise, which was so peaceful and relaxing. We also visited the backwaters, the Krishnapuram palace and the Ambalapuzha temple. Overall, our relaxing Kerala tour was simply amazing. The guides in Kochi and Munnar were also great—they were knowledgeable and flexible. We weren't too happy with the initial boat we were given for our Backwater tour, but the company quickly changed us to another boat, which was great. Kerala Tour With Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Tour

Kerala Tour With Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Great tour of Kerala, a beautiful state in India, and one of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. The sanctuary is located in Thekkady, a small town in the Western Ghats of Kerala. It is spread over an area of 925 square kilometers and is home to a variety of flora and fauna. As soon as I entered the sanctuary, I was greeted by the sounds of birds and the sight of lush greenery. It was a serene and peaceful environment, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of the main attractions of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is the boat ride in the Periyar Lake. I took a boat ride in the early morning, and it was a breathtaking experience. The lake is surrounded by dense forests, and I got to see a variety of animals like elephants, deer, and wild boars coming to the lake to quench their thirst. It was a surreal experience to see these animals in their natural habitat, and I felt so close to nature. I also took a guided trekking tour in the sanctuary, which was a great way to explore the place. The trek was not too difficult, and the guide was knowledgeable about the plants and animals in the sanctuary. I got to see a variety of birds, butterflies, and even a few rare species of animals. The highlight of the trek was spotting a herd of elephants bathing in a nearby river. It was an incredible sight to see these majestic creatures up close. Apart from the wildlife, the sanctuary also offers a chance to learn about the local tribal communities. I visited the Tribal Heritage Museum, which showcases the lifestyle and culture of the tribal communities living in and around the sanctuary. It was a great opportunity to understand their way of life and their relationship with nature. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is not only a treat for nature lovers but also for adventure enthusiasts. The sanctuary offers activities like bamboo rafting, camping, and jungle safari, which are perfect for those seeking an adrenaline rush. my visit to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was an unforgettable experience. It is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Kerala, as it not only showcases the rich biodiversity of the state but also promotes conservation and sustainable tourism. The sanctuary is well-maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary if you are planning a trip to Kerala.

What people love about Kerala Solo Tours

It was an incredible and well organized trip. We highly recommend!!
We had the pleasure of taking a relaxing Kerala tour, exploring the beautiful cities of Cochin, Munnar, Alleppy, and returning to Cochin. I must say, it was one of the most rejuvenating and memorable trips I have ever been on. The tour started in Cochin, also known as the 'Queen of Arabian Sea'. The bustling city with its rich history and culture left me in awe. From the ancient Chinese fishing nets to the Dutch and Portuguese architecture, Cochin has a unique charm that can't be found anywhere else. The highlight of my time in Cochin was the Kathakali dance performance, where I got to witness the traditional art form of Kerala. Next, we headed to Munnar, a hill station situated in the Western Ghats. The scenic drive to Munnar was breathtaking, passing through lush green plantations and waterfalls. The cool climate and serene surroundings of Munnar made it the perfect place to unwind and relax. I also got to visit the tea museum and learn about the history of tea production in Munnar. One of the most memorable experiences of the tour was the houseboat cruise in Alleppy. The backwaters of Alleppy are a sight to behold, with their tranquil waters and picturesque landscapes. The houseboat was well-equipped with all the necessary amenities and the staff on board made sure we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The delicious traditional Kerala cuisine served on the houseboat was the icing on the cake. The tour ended back in Cochin, where I got to explore more of the city and do some shopping. The tour company had arranged for a local guide who took us to all the famous markets and helped us bargain for some great deals. I also got to try some mouth-watering seafood dishes in Cochin, which is known for its fresh seafood. my experience on the relaxing Kerala tour was one of a kind. The tour was well-organized, and the accommodations were comfortable and clean. The local guides were knowledgeable and friendly, making the trip even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to unwind and experience the beauty of Kerala. It truly was a trip of a lifetime.

7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala

Photo of Heena Patel

I was having 7 days with me to explore KERALA- God’s own country. It was very short time to discover whole state including all major tourist destinations with their unique nature, culture, traditions, etc. If you wanna explore in detail, then it takes 2-3 weeks to be there and it was not possible for me who is having full time job from 9 to 5 with minimal leaves.

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

I am doctor by profession but nature lover by heart. So I decided to explore only the nature of Kerala. To explore culture and traditions, I thought that i can visit it next time.

To be with nature, is my most favourite activity. Therefore, here I am gonna describe the detailed itinerary of Kerala trip, which will include all the major and most picturesque places of God’s own country. Kerala offers all types of nature from mountains to lakes, from river to beach. It also has the dense forests and wildlife sanctuaries. What an unique culture of backwaters, it has ! It is called as ‘Venice’ of India, due to culture developed on backwaters. This part attracted me the most to visit Kerala. Here, we go ...

DAY 1 : ATHIRAPALLY WATERFALLS

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

Since I watched Tamil-Telugu movie BAHUBALI, I desperately wanted to visit it. So I planned overnight journey from Ahmedabad to Athirapally and reached there around 8 am. I took flight from Ahmedabad to coimbture. After reaching coimbture,I headed towards it’s railway station from airport. I had already booked my train tickets from coimbture to chalakudi. Train is most comfortable option for me, as one can sleep nicely for some hours in night. I had enough amount of sleep in train and reached chalakudi in early morning 5am. Got freshen up in waiting rooms of railway station. Athirapally is 30 km from chalakudi. Athirapally waterfalls One can reach Cochin and book the taxi for whole trip. Athirapally is just 80 km from Cochin, can take 2:30 to 3 hours to reach. If you guys are traveling in group, taxi is the best option. It’s time saving, comfortable and not so costly, as total fare will get devided by travellers. Just relax and enjoy the beauty of waterfalls. Leave athirapally by 11-12 pm and head towards the most beautiful hill station of India- Munnar.

If you are having taxi, then it’s easy to reach there. If you are traveling solo, use Kerala state transport buses. Direct buses are rare from chalakudi to munnar. Be ready to change 2-3 buses to reach munnar. I reached munnar in evening by bus, checked in hotel and enjoyed it’s pink mesmerizing sunset

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

DAY 2: EXPLORE MUNNAR

I just had only one day at munnar but if one is having leaves for a week including both Sundays ( almost 8 days) , you can plan for 2 days at munnar.

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

Most beautiful places to visit at munnar are, Eravikulam national park, tea gardens & museums, photo point, rose gardens, Lockhart tea estates, top station during sunrise, mattupatty dam, etc etc. Try to visit Eravikulam national park early in the morning. As early as you can reach there, waiting time in the queue will be less. It will take 4-5 hours. Complete your lunch then and explore tea gardens n museums.

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

Leave munnar early morning and reach Kumily around 10-11 am. Check in hotel or homestay, complete your lunch and head towards Periyaar Tiger Sanctuary. It’s difficult to point out any tiger at sanctuary, but other wildlife we can easily spot out there. Most of the times, it’s luck by chance like thing.

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

After returning , one can visit spice garden. I have already visited spice garden at Goa. So I skipped it and spent my evening at local market. One can shop for spice and stone jwellary from here.

DAY 4: KUMILY to KOTTAYAM to ALLEPPY

Leave Kumily early in the morning and reach Kottayam by 11 am. Distance between is 110 km , can take 3 hours. Timings of houseboat ferries from Kottayam to alleppy is 11:30 am,1:00 pm,3:00 pm n 5:00 pm. These houseboats are operated by government only with ticket fare of just 18 rupee. It takes 2-3 hours to reach at alleppy. It is very interesting, how people has evolved their lifestyle around backwaters. After reaching there, complete the lunch and check in hostel or hotel.

One has already experienced the houseboat ride. So he/she can plan to explore beaches of alleppy in evening. I chose merari beach to discover in evening time. It’s just 15 km from alleppy. I enjoyed the best sunset of my life there.

DAY 5: ALLEPPY to MUNRO ISLAND to VARKALA

As usual, leave alleppy early morning to reach at Munro island via Karunagapally or Kollam.

If one is having taxi, reach directly Munro island from kollam. If one is travelling solo in bus, reach Karunagapally or Kollam through state transport bus. Have auto and reach Munro island. Keep ur Google maps handy for smooth transition.

CANOEING: was the best part of my Kerala tour. I just loved the canoeing for 3 hours there, from big river to small canals to big Astamudi lake. It was amazing experience. Vijeesh is the person, who operates the same. Try to reach there by 9:30 am , so he can take you for Canoeing from 10 to 1 pm. KTDC is also operating the canoeing at Munro island.

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

After completing canoeing, catch the bus for varkala. Have the lunch on the way or after reaching at varkala. One can have whole evening to enjoy the only beach of Kerala which has beautiful cliffs. It has been featured in discovery channel for the same cliffs. Name of the beach is Papanasham. There are amazing cafes on the cliffs of varkala. Local market is also nearby for shopping.

DAY 6: VARKALA TO KANYAKUMARI

If you are crazy enough for beaches, you can again go to beach in early morning and enjoy it’s serenity. One can do photography, yoga, morning walk or meditation. Try to reach kanyakumari around 12-1 pm. I took train from varkala to kanyakumari n completed my breakfast at canteen of railway station.

After completing lunch at kanyakumari, take some rest. Plan to reach at Vivekananda smarak around 4 pm. It will take 1-1:30 hours to see the smarak. Local market is very good for the shopping of sarees and stone jwellary. There is temple of Devi Kanyakumari at local market. Complete the shopping quickly and head towards the sunset point. It’s one of the most beautiful sunsets of India.

DAY 7: TRIVENDRUM- KOVALAM

Sunrise of kanyakumari is famous for it’s beauty. It’s not advisable to miss it. People come to kanyakumari specially to enjoy sunrise. After breakfast, leave for trivendrum. Again train is the best option. Have some nap in between if you have woke up early for sunrise.

Two main attractions are there to visit. Padmanabham temple and Kovalam beach. Check the timings of temple and visit it first. Then keep Kovalam beach for evening. For solo travellers, option of auto or citybus is there to reach Kovalam from trivendrum. One can visit lighthouse beach. There is chance to go to the top of lighthouse to see the 360 degree view of Kovalam beach which is amazing. Last time to buy a ticket is 5:30 pm.

Photo of 7 Days Itinerary Of My Solo Trip To Kerala by Heena Patel

As I was having my return flight from trivendrum at 10 pm, I left Kovalam at 7 pm after witnessing it’s colourful sunset. This way, I ended up my most amazing solo journey of KERALA- GOD’s OWN COUNTRY.

This blog is for those who have very short vacations and they want to spend it whole just with pure nature. Do plan your trip to Kerala. Feel free to ask me if any query regarding itinerary.

KERALA TRAVEL GUIDE | The Best of Kerala Without the Crowds

Our Kerala travel guide covers the best places to visit in Kerala and how to get the best out of this beautiful corner of India with fewer crowds, supporting local and sustainable travel options along the way.

Exploring the Best of God’s Own Country

Think swaying palm trees, crashing surf, coffee plantations, hill retreats, silent backwaters, rice paddies, beautiful national parks that are home to a host of wildlife and you’ve teleported yourself to Kerala.

One of the better known states of India, there’s a lot to pack in to a trip to Kerala. Known as God’s Own Country, Kerala in South India has a lot to offer: from ayurvedic retreats and yoga centres, to hill stations and tea plantations up in the Western Ghats (mountains), to national parks that are home to tigers and elephants, to palm fringed beaches. And then there are the Kerala Backwaters, which despite their overcrowding issues, still provide a serene backdrop to any Kerala experience – when experienced in the right way.

We spent over a month travelling Kerala at the beginning of this year, and despite having more time to spend than many visitors to Kerala, we still could not fit everything in. There’s a lot to do in captivating Kerala: so pick wisely!

ⓘ TIP: Planning a trip to India? Join our free India Travel Facebook group here !

This guide will help you get to the best of your time in Kerala – we have put together our recommendations for travelling mindfully in Kerala. Here you’ll find the best eco friendly resorts, homestays, community tourism projects, wildlife projects, locally owned restaurants, and a whole lot more!

What’s in a name? The place names in Kerala are a bit of a jungle. For some strange reason most places seem to begin with a ‘K’ or an ‘M’ (if anyone can enlighten us as to why please do so!), the names are also remarkably similar / mix-up-able, and there’s also an eclectic mix of old and new names used. Allapuzha is commonly referred to as Alleppey still, whereas Kollam – which was Quillon – universally goes by its new name. We’ve included both old and new names wherever relevant in this Kerala Guide to help with getting around.

Ecotourism in Kerala

Kerala’s beauty is no longer a secret, and with its popularity have come crowds of visitors – both from within India and from overseas. Those crowds have congregated in specific areas of Kerala and led to problems for Kerala’s wildlife, environment and local inhabitants: from pollution, to over-development, to lack of local empowerment and economic benefit from tourism.

Local resources have become drained, including water, and upsetting that very delicate balance of flora and fauna. In Alleppey, where going on a house boat cruise is on the bucket-list for so many, the scenes are often of overcrowding of houseboats, islands of floating plastic and filth a-top inky black water.

The good news is that it is possible to travel in Kerala in a way that avoids the eyesores and mass-touristed spots, and more importantly supports local and community based initiatives where local Keralites see the benefits from tourism. We’ve got you covered for the best of sustainable travel in Kerala.

A word – before we begin – about use of the word “Ecotourism” in Kerala (and the rest of India). Ecotourism, unfortunately, is not always and only used for places that are focused on the principles of responsible tourism (ie. giving back to local communities, being environmentally sensitive and protecting local people and cultures). Instead, “Ecotourism” in India is often used to describe any tourist activity which involves the outdoors (such as walking, camping) and / or seeing wildlife. Whether or not it is eco-friendly or in any way sustainable.

Short on time or too busy to plan your own trip? There are plenty of local tour companies who can help such as eKeralaTourism  who offer many of the highlights of Kerala or can offer tailor made itineraries.

There are also global companies such as G Adventures who we have travelled with several times and recommend.

Our Top Picks for Where to Stay in Kerala

Coconut Lagoon (High End) – For luxury along the backwaters there’s no better place than Coconut Lagoon. Ashtamudi Villas (Mid Range) – Set on the southern end of Kerala’s backwaters in Kollam, Ashtamudi Villas are owned and run by a local, who also offers trips in dug out canoes and kayaks to local villages for a more intimate experience with the backwaters. Perfect for chilling in one of their lake-side hammocks and experiencing a much less touristy side of the backwaters… Check rates & book Ashtamudi Villas here!

Marari Beach House (Budget) – Right on Marari Beach (one of Kerala’s nicest beaches near Kochi), this simple place is clean and walking distance to the waves. Perfect for hanging by the beach for a few days! Check rates & Book Marari Beach House here!

North Kerala

Kannur & thottada beach.

Kannur was our first port of call in Kerala after spending 3 weeks in beautiful Bangladesh. As our first taste of Kerala this year, Kannur did not disappoint.

Northern Kerala has been off the beaten track for many visitors to Kerala, who have focused more on the central and southern parts of the state. But that may be about to change. This year, Lonely Planet has named Northern Kerala as one of Asia’s hotspots , and as a paradise for those seeking a quieter taste of Kerala. Small homestays line the palm fringed shores, with uninterrupted views out across the Arabian sea.

Where to Stay in Kannur & Thottada Beach

Thottada beach is one of the best beaches in the area, with a range of accommodation to suit all budgets . There aren’t any facilities as such or shade, so the best time to visit is morning or late afternoon for a stroll. Ladies are recommended to cover up a bit on the beach as this is a rural and mainly Muslim area.

We stayed at Haris Seashell Inn  just outside of Kannur, which turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made. Owned by the enigmatic and kind Mr Haris, these bungalows are perched on a clifftop, with panoramic views out to the beaches below and the sea. I loved waking up and falling asleep to the sound of the crashing waves below.

Mr Haris has done a lot to build the guesthouse in a sustainable way – the villa and rooms are made of repurposed  / upcycled materials salvaged from inhabited traditional Kerala houses, there is an organic farm, and Haris Seashell employs a number of physically handicapped staff, to name but a few initiatives. We happened on this place by chance but were delighted to find  place that was doing so much to create a positive impact!

Check rates and availability for Haris Seashell Inn here .

Getting to and from Kannur

Kannur is well connected by railway north to Goa and Mumbai, and south to Kochi and the rest of Kerala. There’s reportedly a new airport for those coming from further afield. There are also buses connecting to the rest of Kerala and nearby Karnataka state. Our recommended mode of transport in India is by train.

Little heard of – outside of India at least – Wayanad is a tranquil uphill oasis of homestays, quiet villages, scenic winding roads that take you through wild forests, and is a place where you can truly escape.

Things to do in Wayanad

There’s no “centre” to Wayanad as such, so to the first time visitor it can take some time to get your bearings. Sights and activities are spread all over the region, so wherever you base yourself, some road travel will be involved. Our best tip is to pick somewhere quiet to stay, un-plug and relax to the backdrop of the peaceful Wayanad scenery. It’s better not to try to pack too much sightseeing in – but rather adapt to life at a slower pace.

Jeep Safaris.  Wildlife is a big attraction here, but we found our jeep drive at Tholpetty to be disappointing. After an early start and being inline at the forestry department by 6am to get our tickets, we got the second jeep out of the gates. We didn’t see anything apart from a few deer.

Unfortunately the “Safari” consists of a 30 minute drive through the section of national park that is right next to the road, in a line of about 20 jeeps. If you’re more than the second or third jeep in, your chances of seeing wildlife are likely non-existent. We should probably be happy that this means less interference for the animals! As an alternative, safaris at Muthunga are reportedly better than Tholpetty – and even better are the wildlife opportunities in neighbouring Karnataka state.

Beyond the safaris, there are beautiful lakes to visit  and countless hikes one can go on. There are several different boating lakes. Pookode lake has pedals-style boating (we did not visit here) and Banasura Sagar Dam is the place to go for those needing an adrenaline kick – on a speedboat. There is also a slow ferry that you can go on around the lake, at 12 midday.

Homestays in Wayanad

We were lucky enough to stay in two amazing homestays in Wayanad.

The first we found through I-likelocal.com – our go to website for homestays and responsible tourism activities in Asia. We planned to stay one night in a homestay on a working coffee plantation, but our one night turned into four nights! In a simple cabin away from the main house and down a bamboo walkway, we were surrounded by trees and jungle.

Our shady balcony was the perfect spot to relax and read, practice a little meditation, and just enjoy the sound of the birds. Hosted by a welcoming couple, the homestay is the family home and plantation of Sunil, who is also a responsible tourism advocate. We enjoyed chatting about the development of tourism in Wayanad over many a cup of home-grown coffee.

The homestay is a short distance (15 minutes by rickshaw) from Meenangady, which is a small town with some simple but good thali and dosa restaurants and is a regional transport hub.

Find more information and rates for i-like local homestays here .

Our second homestay in Wayanad was with the inspiring  Kabani Tour  which we found through Visit.org. Kabani Community tourism have set up two village community tourism projects in Kerala and are currently working on a third. Promoting “thoughtful travel”, their concept is one that revolves around travellers experiencing village life through homestays, meeting village elders, learning more about traditional life through guided walks and learning more about traditions. Revenue is then reinvested directly into the community from these activities.

We went to the Kabani village of Mothakara which is famous for its Women-to-Women travel initiatives. Set among villages of winding lanes, emerald paddy fields, and extended lolly-pop shape betel-nut trees, this village is a truly peaceful place. Local women from the village have been trained in guiding and showing (female) visitors to the village, the ways of local village life. These women previously had no employment opportunities, but rather were housewives.

Through the Women to Women travel project they have been given the opportunity to expand their horizons through interactions with visitors to the village, and also to earn additional income for the family. Initially the women did not have any English language skills, and relied on communicating through gestures, expressions, and through their hearts. Over time, English words have been exchanged and learned, and the project has continued to grow. These days these even a guesthouse run entirely by this inspiring team of women. Unfortunately during our visit, the women guide team were oversubscribed and so we didn’t get to experience their project in full; however we did get to meet the charming Radha.

Our homestay – where we stayed in our host family’s house – was the soft bed and crisp cotton sheets kind of comfortable, and we were served some of the most delicious home-cooked food during all of our time in Kerala.

Responsible Travel in Wayanad

Despite Wayanad being little known and considered “off the beaten path” outside of India, it is a different story within India. Wayanad has become / is becoming a popular escape for weekenders from Bangalore and the visitor footfall (or carfall) is steadily increasing. As such Wayanad’s blissful peace and quiet is coming under pressure from tourism, too. Do your bit to leave a positive impact from your visit by taking time to learn about the local culture, respecting the environment by not littering (even better – avoid plastic bottled water) or causing noise pollution (being noisy) and consider staying somewhere that supports eco friendly travel.

We did not have time to visit all of the ecotourism options in Wayanad, so here are some suggestions beyond our experiences above:

Eco Friendly Hotels / Resorts in Wayanad

  • Uravu Bamboo Grove is an award winning sustainable lodge, with design-led rooms surrounded by nature.
  • An award-winning sustainable guest house set high up in the Wayanad hills, Fringe Ford  is a place that prides itself on being “as cut off from the world as you can get” (we think that’s a good thing!).
  • Award winning CGH Earth’s property Wayanad Wild  offers a luxury escape deep into the forest

Wayanad Responsible Tourism Tours & Activities

The best way to support responsible tourism in Wayanad is to be environmentally sensitive (e.g. avoiding plastic and limiting your water use), using public transportation if possible to reduce the number of cars on the road, and to be respectful of wildlife. There are a number of operators offering ways to connect with the local culture and community on your trip, here are a few resources (we did not use all of them, but they are all reputable and highly regarded organisations.

  • I-like Local offer a number of Farmstays, Homestays and responsible experiences
  • The Blue Yonder offer trips including day activities throughout Kerala.
  • Many of the accommodations listed above will be able to help you arrange activities during your stay in Wayanad.

Getting to and from Wayanad

Wayanad is easily accessible from the northern Kerala cities of Calicut (Khozikode) and Kannur. There are also connections to Cochin, Bangalore, Mysore and other major regional hubs. There are more frequent bus services to Calicut, although you can take a direct bus from Mananthadvady to Kannur. There are no railway connection to / from Wayanad. Most buses are run by KSRTC but we found the redbus website far more helpful.

Central Kerala

Kochi / cochin.

Kochi / Cochin (the town’s old name)  is one of Kerala’s most popular tourism spots and transport hubs, and so the starting point for many travellers in Kerala. It’s possible to spend many a day wandering the old lanes of Fort Cochin between colonial houses, organic cafes, art galleries, churches and boutiques. Note that Cochin is quite separate (it is an island) from the mainland town of Ernakulam, where all major transport arrives and departs from.

Things to do in Kochi

Kathakali Performances  – for many visitors, a Kathalkali performance is on their list – this is a chance to see traditional Keralan dance and music, complete with incredible makeup and costumes. The Kerala Kathakali Centre is the most authentic theatre to see this at.

Exploring Fort  Cochin –  taking in its churches, museums and even Synagogues. As an old trading and naval outpost, over the last 600 years, Kochi has seen the arrival of many immigrants of different nationalities and religions – from Portuguese to Dutch, to British to Arabic traders. There’s an Indo-Portugese museum, a Dutch cemetery, as well as several beautiful churches to explore such as the Santa-Cruz basilica. There’s also a growing number of art galleries (often with cafe), such as the Kashi Art Gallery.

Shopping –  there are plenty of artisan style shops in Fort Kochi, making it something of a shoppers paradise. Many shops sell organic toiletries and ayurveda products, and lovely Aambal is an eco clothing store  which sells hand-woven, natural and handmade and recycled fashion.

Eating –  There are plenty of cafes lining the streets of Fort Kochi, and if you’ve been on the road for a while, this is a good place to splurge on western treats aka good pizza and avocado wraps with a good latte. It does come at a price though. The local fare is much bewe dtter priced, usually more delicious, and we got bitten by the traditional Keralan Thali bug, at the Solar Cafe . For a truly authentic dining experience head to Authenticook to arrange to dine in someone’s house. We were hosted by the charming and kind Bindu at her home in Ernakulam and enjoyed a delicious brunch.

Take a day trip (or longer) to Marari Beach –  The beaches at Kochi itself are grubby (at best) but head an hour and a half or so south, and the lovely Marari beach awaits. Rent a two-wheeler and drive straight south through paddy fields, small towns, and backwater scenery. Marari beach (also known as Mararikulam) itself is as yet not very developed, and is a pretty stretch of sand with clean water for swimming. Accommodation options nearby vary widely in quality if you want to stay longer – the shacks on the beach looked decidedly dilapidated, whereas the Marari Beach hotel is fit for a king.

The Kerala Backwaters –  Kerala’s largest draw, you’ll likely be offered a backwater cruise (or two) during your time in Kochi. See more on arranging a backwaters trip below , we don’t recommend  booking it from Kochi due to high prices.

Where to Stay in Kochi

The Fort Kochi area is the place where most visitors stay – while there are plenty of hotels over in Ernakulam on the mainland that are useful for if you have an early / late bus or train to catch, most of the main attractions of Kochi are in the fort area. Homestays are the name of the game here, and the city has seen an explosion in them. Indeed you can’t walk more than a few meters without coming across a homestay sign. The word “homestay” has been applied in a liberal sense though – and these are usually just guesthouses with a number of rooms that are sold on a bed & breakfast basis, but hosts are usually very welcoming!

Because of the explosion of homestays in Fort Kochi, the centre can get a little crowded and there are no “eco-friendly” accommodation options as such in Kochi. For a quieter experience, head a little away from the fort. If travelling in December / January, book well in advance!

Check rates and book accommodation in Kochi here.

Getting to and from Kochi

The main gateway to Kochi is Ernakulam. There are two train stations (on opposite sides of the city so please check which one your train arrives at/leaves from) Ernakulam Town (sometimes referred to as “North Railway” and Ernakulam Junction “South Railway”). Trains run north-south along the Indian coast and link directly to Mumbai, Goa, Karnataka, and southern Kerala. There are also direct trains across country to Bangalore, Chennai and even Delhi (46 hours!). Buses run routes from Ernakulam across the region.

Kochi airport is also located in Ernakulam about an hour away from Fort Kochi, and is remarkable for being fully run on solar energy! It’s a major hub and as well as domestic flights has connections to the Gulf countries, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Singapore.

Despite being one of Kerala’s major attractions this is one place that we failed to squeeze into our Kerala itinerary, except for passing through its scenic gardens. Tea is of course, the name of the game here and is the main draw, and most visitors come to soak up the ambience and enjoy being surrounded by the beauty of the tea gardens.

Munnar tea country resort is a sustainable accommodation option – they have implemented sustainable initiatives and are looking to reduce their footprint.

Find prices and book Munnar hotels here .

South Kerala

Thekkady & periyar tiger reserve.

Travelling inland and up into Kerala’s mountains – the Western Ghats – was one of the highlights of our Kerala trip. Winding through hills, tea plantations and around several hair pin bends, our bus journey (although bumpy) provided spectacular views. Thekkady is best known for Periyar National Park (or sometimes, rather optimistically known as Periyar Tiger Reserve) and many come here for a chance to see Kerala’s wildlife. It’s also, more simply, a chance to get away from the hot and humid air of the backwaters and coast.

Things to do in Thekkady and Periyar

Exploring Periyar –  Kerala’s Western Ghats are one of the largest refuges for wildlife in India, and Periyar National Park is one destination that tourists flock to, in the hopes of seeing wild elephant, leopards, tigers and more. There are various ways to explore the national park, but during our trip to Periyar  we found some to be far more enjoyable than others. While the boat trip on the lake felt like a foray into disneyland, we loved walking in the park in the early morning mist with our local guide (Periyar is one of the last remaining parks you can walk into), and we also loved our stay at Kerala’s most sustainable resort, in Thekaddy: Spice Village .

Learn about Tribal Communities near Periyar –  Periyar and the surrounding area are home to different tribal communities , including the Mannan, Paliyan and Malampandaram tribes. Such communities often leave a significantly different lifestyle from “mainstream” society, and as such are sometimes marginalised. They have an unprecedented knowledge of the forest areas, and are now benefitting from the tourism that comes from Periyar through a number of ecotourism initiatives. You can support the people who have relied on the forest in the past by taking a walk or trek with one of the village guides, or going to visit the Tribal Heritage Museum in Thekkady.

Seeing Wildlife – While we loved our visit to Thekkady and our stay, if your primary motive for visiting is to spot wildlife, you may be disappointed. Due to crowds, many animals hide deep in the forest. And we can’t say we blame them! Get the full low down on visiting Thekkady and Periyar in our post here .

Where to Stay in Thekkady and Periyar

The highlight of our time in Thekkady was without doubt our stay at the beautiful and very eco-friendly Spice Village Resort . This resort has won awards for its environmental and community initiatives, and no wonder… the resort is powered by a solar plant the size of a football pitch,  they have their own water filtering and bottling plant, a paper recycling operation (all paper you’ll find in the hotel is recycled), several types of compost, biogas, and the list goes on. It’s also a beautiful place to relax – designed as a traditional spice village, the cottages are well spaced out and set among tranquil gardens, where black monkeys and birds rest peacefully over head. You will not want to leave!

Check rates and book Spice Village Resort here .

There are a few other small eco-friendly lodges and smaller accommodations such as Indhrivanam, a vegan and eco friendly homestay, however we did not have time to check out their credentials in person.

Check rates and book Indhrivanam here .

Kerala Backwaters

The number one tourism draw in Kerala (and possibly southern India) are the Kerala backwaters, and the chance to take a cruise along them. Over recent years images of floating quietly and serenely through Keralan villages on a converted traditional Keralan rice barge, surveying life, warm chai in hand, have drawn in the crowds. After all, who wouldn’t be tempted by such a blissful watery escape?

Over the last ten years, crowds have flocked in steadily increasing numbers to Alleppey (Allaphuza) which – somewhat prophetically if not wistfully – has been self-dubbed as the  Venice of the East.  What were once tranquil backwaters have become noisy, congested with tourists and polluted in many parts – due to poor regulation of houseboat tourism and overcrowding. Where tourism was once seen as a blessing by locals, it has now become a bit of a curse. The inky black waters of Alleppey itself tell of a different side to the Kerala backwaters .

To Houseboat or not to Houseboat?

One of the biggest culprits in spoiling the backwaters has been houseboat tourism. There is no accurate figure for how many houseboats are currently in operation, while un-registered houseboats have been clamped down on since 2015, the number of houseboats have still been growing. In recent efforts to curb houseboat tourism growth further, Kerala tourism recently introduced a measure as part of their Kerala Responsible Tourism mission that prevented any new licences being granted for new houseboats on the Kerala backwaters. Results, however have yet to be seen, and sources say that it’s not working: when a ship retires from service, the licence is simply “recycled” for a new houseboat – meaning little to any reduction in the number of houseboats. During our time in Alleppey we saw rows on rows of houseboats moored just outside the town, hoping for customers.

So what’s the the problem with the houseboats? Essentially the damage that they cause falls into a few different categories. The most obvious is their environmental impact – 95% of houseboats are diesel powered, and that fuel often leaks into the waters. Many boats are high-end and offer air-conditioning, meaning the constant burning of fuel on board to power the boat and generators. There are no sewage treatment facilities on the boats meaning that sewage is dumped directly overboard, and there’s no waste disposal either – meaning that the plastic water bottles you drink from usually go straight over the side too.

This pollution has impacted water quality, and fishermen have reported a decline in fish and prawn stocks in areas frequented by houseboats, meaning a direct impact on the livelihood of fishing communities in the backwaters. For many villages, their only water supply is from the backwater channels themselves for cooking and even drinking – more shockingly only a fraction of villagers reported boiling or treating the water in any way before drinking it. In the agricultural sector there has been an effect too, with concerns over polluted paddy fields, damage to rice crops, and even labourers becoming reluctant to work in the polluted fields.

Then there is the noise pollution for locals from the passing boats (many of which blare (awful) music loudly), and the lack of economic or social benefit for most locals from houseboat tourism. Houseboat tourism was initially thought to provide economic benefits to locals by providing jobs on boats, but in reality the high prices that tourists pay for their houseboat experience rarely reach the villagers who need to deal with the effects of the passing boats. Rather the money goes to companies and private individuals who often own large numbers of houseboats. Granted there are jobs on the boats, but this number is small compared to the number who feel the effect of pollution in the backwaters.

For all of these reasons we decided not to go on a houseboat cruise in Alleppey or elsewhere on the Kerala backwaters, and we don’t recommend it.

Exploring the Backwaters Responsibly

But what about my backwaters dream? Worry not – there are some less damaging ways to enjoy Kerala’s watery scenery. In general, these consist of either taking public ferry routes that are already in service, and/or staying on land next to the backwaters. Choosing to use existing infrastructure helps to keep our footprint lower and brings more benefit to locals, particularly in the case of choosing to stay in existing accommodation, particularly if it is homestays or on a small scale.

One of the best places to stay next to the backwaters and enjoy all their beauty, without supporting houseboats is Kumarakom – more on that below!

Alleppey (Allappuzha)

Alleppey is backpacker central and ground zero for backwater cruises – expect wherever you stay to persist with offering you houseboat services during your stay. We however enjoyed our time in Alleppey (we spent nearly a week there) and found it to be a great town for unwinding, with good wifi for when we needed to catch up on work, good food, and plenty of facilities.

Things to do in Alleppey

The Beach – away from the backwaters scene, Alleppey is blessed in being located both on the ocean with its own long beach, and on the edge of the backwaters. The beach itself is a nice stretch, and has a number of accommodation options, and cafes. We loved strolling the beach at evening time when the bhaji and chai wallahs come out to sell their tasty snacks, and the beach becomes a popular gathering point for families and couples. The beach is reportedly safe for swimming although take care as the waves can get strong. The beach is quite touristy and you’ll see plenty of pale skinned visitors in their swimwear, but we recommend ladies to cover up with a sarong while not swimming.

Take the Local Ferry  – ferries go on a number of different routes leaving from Alleppey and are a chance to see the backwaters, the local way. We took the morning ferry to Kottayam (3 hours) and returned the same day at 3pm from Kottayam to Alleppey. It made for quite a long day on the boat, but we loved the experience of sitting in the well ventilated boat and seeing local life. The 3pm return ferry to Alleppey was filled with school children ( please do not give them pens as this encourages begging from tourists ) giving us plenty of opportunity to chat and practice their English. You can find the Kerala Water Transport Dept schedules here .

Go on a Walk of Old Alleppey –  The Award Winning Preserve Alleppey Society , started by a group of local ladies, was created due to the need to preserve the character of Alleppey. In a country where it is uncommon for women to be able to work as guides or in tourism, this is a cause well worth supporting to encourage the work of women in tourism, and also to see the original character of Alleppey. The ladies offer guided walks of Alleppey and cooking classes.

Where to Stay in Alleppey

Like other tourism hotspots, Alleppey has seen a surge in accommodation options over recent years, and is suffering from the problem of too many homestays and hotels being opened. When we visited, homestays were complaining of being empty (despite us visiting in January – supposedly high season). Homestays also vary hugely in quality. We moved quickly from our first homestay which we did not like until we found Heritage Homestay (below).

We loved our time at Heritage Homestay – a very simple, locally owned place with two big and airy rooms at the front – which immediately felt like home to us. Run by the charming and very kind Johnny and his team, the homestay is located about 10 minutes walk from the beach.

Nestled on the opposite bank of Lake Vembanad from Alleppey, Kumarakom is the perfect place to slow down and experience the backwaters (from shore) at their most peaceful. The lake is large and looks like an inland sea, providing the perfect backdrop for beautiful sunsets over the water. Kumarakom is also one of the locations where Kerala tourism is implementing more sustainable measures: many hotels and tour companies are part of an initiative to minimise their environmental impact and make sure that products are procured locally where possible, helping to maximise the economic benefit that goes back to locals.

Things to do in Kumarakom

Enjoy life at a slow pace – possibly the best thing to do in Kumarakom is – not much! Our best memories were of sitting back and watching the sunset from the serenity of Coconut Lagoon (below). Taking a quiet stroll along the backwaters and through villages is a great way to get a sense of local life here.

Visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary –  This is one of the best bird sanctuaries in India, with many rare species being sighted particularly during the monsoon months of June, July and August.

Where to Stay in Kumarakom

We loved our stay at Coconut Lagoon , one of CGH Earth’s most beautiful properties. The experience here is unique, the only way to arrive and leave here is by boat. The resort has been hard at work at sustainability too, and is part of the Kumarakom responsible tourism initiatives. Wake up to the sight of passing boats and the resort’s own rare breed “lawnmowers” (aka cows). There’s also a renowned Ayurveda centre on property.

Find more info and book Coconut Lagoon here .

Getting to and from Kumarakom

One way to reach Kumarakom is by boat, there is a ferry service to Muhamma on the other side of Lake Vembanand, near Marari beach. Services are not that regular though, so you may find taxi / private transfer is the easiest way to get here. There is no train station or direct buses to Kumarakom.

Kollam (formerly known as Quillon) is another quiet alternative for exploring Kerala’s backwaters, this time from the southern end, and it’s also a colourful former fishing town set on the Arabian sea. It’s a great place to get off Kerala’s beaten tourist path for a couple of days if you want something a bit different. Outside our guesthouse, we didn’t see any other foreigners during the three days we spent here.

Things to do in Kollam

Ashtamudi Lake –  Away from from the beach and on the other side of Kollam lies Ashtamudi lake, which forms the southern end of Kerala’s backwaters. The lake offers opportunities for boat trips to Monroe island in the lake and exploring village life – there are fishing villages dotted around the lake. The government run boat trips are cheaper than the same itinerary offered by private companies. There’s also a ferry that goes all the way to Alleppey from Kollam.

Beach & Tangasseri Lighthouse –  head a little south of the centre of Kollam and there’s a beach (nothing spectacular) and a pretty fishing harbour filled with colourful boats. Tangasseri lighthouse, standing tall in red and white stripes is a good lookout point across the town and out to sea – climb up the stairs for your daily dose of cardio. A visit just before sunset provides the best light.

Where to Stay in Kollam

We struck gold with our choice of Ashtamudi Villas, a small and peaceful retreat with about eight bungalows on the banks of Ashtamudi lake. The resort is largely eco-friendly, with a focus on using natural materials and reducing waste, and it is the perfect spot for lounging in the gardens in a hammock and just reading a book while fishermen pass in their dug out canoes just a few meters away. Mr Joseph, the owner, also runs boat trips to small channels and villages around the lake.

Find more info and book Ashtamudi Villas here .

In the south of Kerala along the Arabian sea, Varkala is fast becoming the new hippie destination of south India – some would say the next Goa. Set atop cliffs, Varkala is the place for sunsets, yoga, ayurveda and perfect turmeric lattes. We didn’t make it to Varkala, but given the number of people who told us we should go, we thought we’d include it in this guide! If you have tips to add, let us know in the comments section below. Alcohol is officially not permitted in Varkala, although you may find some places serving it. Seeing as tourism in Varkala is booming, so is a problem with plastic waste and (over) development. Please do your bit by avoiding plastic bottles wherever possible.

Need a bit more help with your Kerala trip? We recommend G Adventures Tours. Find out more here!

Things to do in Varkala

The Beach –  we’ll start with the obvious, many come to Varkala to sit back and enjoy some sun, sea and sand. Varkala’s beach is set below cliffs – beaches become quieter and cleaner if you venture further north or south from town. Do watch out for currents and big waves while swimming as the waters here are known to be treacherous.

Take to the Waves –  Surfing outfit Soul & Surf (who we loved during our visit to Sri Lanka ) offer surfing retreats, courses and lessons combined with yoga, massage and music. They work to minimise their impact and work with as many locals as possible. Their base in Varkala is at the top of the cliff, with prime view out to the ocean. More info here .

Anjengo Fort & Lighthouse –  Sometimes spelt as Anchuthengu, 10km south of Varkala, this fort was built in 1696 as the first Malabar stronghold for the British East India company. Climb up the nearby lighthouse for views down onto the fort and coastline.

Eat and Juice your way around town –  Varkala is full of trendy juice bars and organic cafes (the wifi may or not work), perfect for reading a book or a day away from the beach.

Take time for yourself  with a yoga or ayurveda retreat – Ayurveda and Yoga options about in Varkala and there are many to choose from. Some offer one off treatments whereas others offer week+ long detox programs. Book Ayurveda and Yoga retreats in Varkala here .

Where to Stay in Varkala

Puccini Lala Eco resort has an art cafe and eco friendly mud rooms, and is a conscious / sustainable living concept. They also offer healing and cooking classes.

More info and book Puccini Lala here .

The Bohemian Masala is an alternative eco retreat that has been built as handcrafted tribal herbal cottages – using a mixture of mud and traditional ayurvedic herbs that are sure to provide a restful and healing night’s sleep. The huts are set in gardens filled with hammocks and quiet spots for reading and relaxation.

More info and book Bohemian Masala here .

Getting to and from Varkala

The best way to reach and leave Varkala is by train; trains leave for Kollam, Alleppey and Ernakulam to the north, and to Trivandrum to the south (which has regular connections). There are also buses to Trivandrum and Kollam.

Solo Female Travel in Kerala – 5 of the Best Places to Go

I love traveling. Much. It has always been a great experience to go around places, explore the place, learn new cultures, know the people and taste the foods. I never miss out an opportunity then I get to travel around. I have gone far and wide and have great experiences all around the world. The feeling is overwhelming. And recently one such opportunity hit me. This time the destination was Kerala and I wanted to cover some of the best places to visit in Kerala .

Though I have done solo trips to a few places, I wasn’t sure about a female solo trip to Kerala but as I reached everything changed. My solo trip to Kerala will always be the most cherished one. My trip was during the months of November, December and January and I think this is the best time to visit Kerala. It is not just about the place but also the people, the great food and their wonderful and beautiful diverse culture. It is not every time there is a great experience with lots of learning and fun but in Kerala it was wonderful and I came back with the trunk of memories and never-ending craving to go back to place over and over again.

When it comes to female solo trips there is always a question of safety and security and that is why I would suggest Kerala for every girl out there because of this place insecure and one of the coolest and safest places to travel. The people in Kerala welcome everyone with an open heart and they do not judge us no matter how we are and that is one of the best things about this place. Be whoever you are and whatever you want in Kerala and enjoy this place because it is one of the best experiences you will have in India.

The major thing that everyone looks for when going for solo trips is making sure that the place they go is wonderful but for women, we also have to look for the safety and the situations of the place. It is true that we get insecure and it is also necessary to make sure that we do not go to a place where we feel uncomfortable. No one wants to go tripping at a place where they feel terrible and that is why it is necessary to do proper research before deciding on a trip.

Now that I have been to one of the best places in the world I can assure you that Kerala is a great place for women to go on a trip or a solo trip. I would love to share my experience and the places to explore in Kerala with all of you and I’m letting you know that do not fear; Kerala is a beautiful place with beautiful people.

Though I have been in and around Kerala through this solo trip, I like to share my experience in five places which blew my mind. These places are Munnar, Thekkady, Varkala, Kovalam, and Alleppey. Ladies and girls if you are really in need of a getaway or a great adventure you should definitely take a solo trip to Kerala and explore these five places which can give you a lifetime of memories and great learning. It definitely creates a feeling deep inside which will forever make Kerala special. A female solo trip to Kerala is the right decision I made and I suggest every other girl take up the decision to explore and learn the culture of Kerala and the wonderful places in Kerala by taking a solo trip to Kerala.

Munnar

Munnar is all about green. The green plantations stretched far and wide, the mountains which are a backdrop to the place, the hilly areas the calm and beautiful lakes the Rocky areas, the tremendous waterfalls are what makes Munnar beautiful and gorgeous. Munnar is one of the places in Kerala which is the most sought out by tourist and is one of the best places in the country. It is not just about the beautiful and breathtaking scenery but also the activities in Munnar which makes this place a great one.

The major places to explore in Munnar are Pothamedu View Point, Anamudi peak, Lockhart gap, Tata tea museum, Kolukkumalai tea estate, Blossom Park, Kundala lake, Marayoor Dolmens, Chinnakanal waterfalls, Attukal waterfalls etc.

Anamudi peak and Pothamedu View Point are best known for the adventure sports like trekking, Rock climbing etc. The waterfalls in Munnar are so gorgeous. They fall from great heights and gives the viewers a fabulous sight and experience. The waterfalls mostly situated either on the go of the road or in between dense forest and tall trees. The cool atmosphere and the cold climate also gives chills along with a wonderful experience. The tea plantations in Munnar are awesome. The land spread with green with the Aroma of tea leaves is totally mind-blowing. The lakes in Munnar give the best water rides and also have great scenery with all the mountains and hills and tall trees in the backdrop. Another specialty of Munnar is that it gives the best Kerala food. I was so overwhelmed with the food I was given. The traditional food served with so much love and concern not only made my tummy happy but also filled my heart. Munnar also has great spas and therapies which is so wonderful. I took a week to stay in one of the resorts in Munnar and enjoyed their natural therapies and spas. It not only made me feel physically better but also made my soul so carefree. I would definitely suggest spas and therapies of Munnar to everyone.

The reason why Munnar is apt for female solo trips is that the place is so welcoming and gives a lot of space for women. No one stares or gazes and there are no hardships for women in Munnar. You can walk around us people what way to go, what to do and if you want you can even get yourself a personal guide. It’s one of the safest places in Kerala. With the beautiful scenery and great adventure sports, I don’t think Munnar should be missed by anyone.

Kovalam is in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. Kovalam is well known for its beaches. It is a beach town and is one of the best beaches in Kerala. The ambiance the people everything is wonderful about Kovalam. Kovalam was a great experience for me as the place was calm and serene.

The major attractions in Kovalam are the lighthouse beach, Samudra beach and Hawah beach. The view of the beaches in Kovalam mesmerizing especially during evenings and nights. The other places in Kovalam which offer a great experience are the Karamana river, Vellayani Lake, Kovalam Art Gallery, Neyyar Dam, Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple, Aruvikkara Dam, Valiyathura Pier, Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple, Halcyon Castle, Sri Pathmanaba Swami Temple, etc.

What makes Kovalam suitable for female solo trips is that the place always encourages women empowerment and also is so welcoming. Women are safe in the capital of Kerala. Moreover, the traveling experiences for women in Thiruvananthapuram are outstanding. Personally, I felt like home when I was in Thiruvananthapuram exploring Kovalam. If you need a really good getaway to a beautiful serene location but with aspects of the city then Kovalam is the right choice. I stayed in Kovalam for about 2 weeks because I felt so lazy to leave the place because it was that comfortable. So ladies out there do not waste much time get yourself all you need and leave for Kovalam. It is definitely a grand experience.

Varkala is another beautiful experience in Thiruvananthapuram. The place is well known for its beaches and the Cliff and the awesome cafes. My personal experience in Varkala was quite mesmerizing. The place gains life at night. the mornings in Varkala are really beautiful but the real deal is all about the night. The cafes and shacks in Varkala are open throughout the night and the place gives kind of a Goa experience. This is also one reason why Varkala is the best place for women to go on a solo trip. The people are cool and the accommodations are excellent. And Talking about food it is the best.

The major attraction of Varkala also includes the Janardhana Swamy temple. The view of Varkala from Varkala Cliff is the most breathtaking one. Personally, it is my favorite of all the five places.

Thekkady is a major attraction in Kerala and going on a solo trip to Thekkady was wow. It not just about the place, but also the experience that earned. The weather, the place, the people, the activities, the food, everything was totally worth it.

Boating, rafting elephant rides are a major attraction of Thekkady. The nearby places of interest also include Periyar National Park, Anakkara, Murikadi, Chellar Kovil, Mangala Devi Temple, Pattumalay and Pattumalay Tea Factory, etc.

Thekkady is best for women as it is a great tourist attraction. The place gives a wonderful experience and the people are so good. The food in Thekkady is quite great. They serve the staple food of Kerala and also the major dishes of the state. It is mouthwatering and I drooled over it.

Alleppey

Alleppey is well known for the backwaters and trust me it is quite mind-blowing. I had a great great great experience in Alleppey.

The major attraction of the place is the houseboat rides. They have this variety of houseboats rides which is too good. The houseboat rides give us the sightseeing pleasures and also the best cuisine of Kerala. Being at the houseboats was a tremendous experience. I felt so great with the lovable nature of the people in Alleppey. I felt so good that I wasn’t feeling insecure at the houseboats and it was almost like home. Marari Beach is also one of the attractions in Alleppey. Other attractions also include Vembanad Lake, Vembanad Lake, and Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race.

The food served at the Alleppey houseboats, it is something I can never stop talking about. It was so mouthwatering. The spicy Kerala food swept me off my feet and to this day I’m still craving for it, especially, the seafood. Good Lords! It was heavenly. And talking about desserts, I don’t even know what to say! Perfect! That’s the word. Desserts were perfect. Alleppey is that one destination which has a beautiful and serene lake with a beautiful green background. It is one of the peaceful experiences that I had in my life.

So ladies and girls, do not wait much. And do not wait for anyone either. You can pack your bags, get your stuff, and make your route to Kerala. It is definitely a place which is best for women to go on solo trips. The facilities offered at the places in Kerala are quite good and I never had a bad experience. The services are also great. you do not have to worry about anything when you are in Kerala. Ladies are given lots of respect and they want people to try new things and therefore being a solo traveler to Kerala gains you a lot and a lot of respect. The people in Kerala are so friendly and welcoming that even if you need any help, they’ll be available anytime. Before starting your solo trip to Kerala make sure that you have everything you need with you – things to meet your basic necessities. you can buy the things from Kerala but then it is always good to have your own few handy things which will always be helpful to you. If you are planning to stay in resorts or hotels make sure that you contact respective places prior to your visit so that you can reserve your accommodation. Checking with the hotels, spa centers and other places where you are about to visit will always keep them acknowledged about your visit and timings which will ease up your traveling and tripping. I’m so glad I could make it to Kerala and I’m looking forward to more experiences and explorations in Kerala. I just can’t wait to get back to God’s own country and relax my body and soul. The experience in Kerala is priceless.

5 reasons why Kerala deserves a place on every India itinerary

Kerala travel guide

Locals call Kerala “God’s own country” for a reason. Down in India’s most southern state, tranquil backwaters give way to vibrant rainforests and tropical jungles, bursting with spice plantations and wildlife.

It’s a magical little paradise away from everything the usual set of guidebooks often associate with India and the north of the country.

Like many people travelling to India with a full-time job, I really had to pick and choose where I went to get the most out of a fairly short trip. Kerala was on my travel itinerary from the start, and here’s five reasons why it should be on yours too.

It’s completely unique to the rest of India

Tourist epicenters like Delhi and Jaipur often feel crowded and hectic, yet incredible in their own way. But they aren’t all that India has to offer. Taking a flight from India’s capital down to the state of Kerala only takes a few hours, but it truly feels like a night and day transition. Relaxation practically oozes out of the warm, tropical air, where the pace of life is slower and calmer.

Kerala travel guide India

Kochi is diverse in every sense, even down to the various religions practiced in India’s most southern state. In Fort Kochi (a must on your travel itinerary) you can see a Hindu Temple, a Church and a Synagogue all practically on the same street, all the while hearing a Muslim call to prayer from a nearby Mosque. You can also find traditional Chinese fishing nets and 16 th- century Portuguese houses from the colonial era, all adding to the cultural melting pot that is Kochi today.

Three must-visit places in Kerala, according to one of Intrepid’s amazing local leaders in India, Sana Jinah :

I recommend Kochi, Munnar and Varkala. Kochi for the history. Munnar for the peaceful vibes, mountains and tea plantations. And Varkala for amazing views of the sea from the cliff – it’s the only beach in India which is next to a cliff!

Kerala is one of the best places on Earth to see animals in their natural habitat

Let’s face it, ethical tourism is a huge concern wherever you are in the world – and wherever you are, the only way to see truly animals with a truly clear conscience is in their natural habitat. You can find that here. Within Kerala’s emerald green mountain ranges is the spectacular Periyar National Park, nearly 1,000 square kilometers of jungle, trekking paths and lakes that is bursting with wildlife.

Kerala travel guide India

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

“Lock your balcony to keep out naughty monkeys”, read a sign in my hotel room in the nearby town of Kumily. I thought this was just a joke until I heard the excitable chattering of a troop of monkeys on the roof, making their ways to the trees using my balcony as a shortcut. You’ll find the common Indian monkey everywhere in the small towns surrounding Periyar, but the park itself is home to many more species – including the illusive black monkey, recognizable from its golden brown or gingery mane.

Monkey business aside, Periyar is best known as a tiger reserve and one of the few places you can see Bengal tigers outside of captivity. Visit during the month of April to maximize the chance of seeing one.  Don’t worry about tiger attacks though – secure campsites are built into a deep tiger-proof trench.

I turned up at Periyar National Park woefully out of season in the depths of the monsoon and still managed to see black monkeys, water buffalo and the briefest glimpse of a figure running ahead of us – which my guide later said was a jaguar. Plan ahead and if you’re lucky you’ll see a tiger or an elephant in the way that nature intended.

VISIT PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK ON THIS 15-DAY ADVENTURE THROUGH SOUTHERN INDIA

The landscape is dreamy

Wake up on one of the long wooden houseboats that glide along the tranquil Kerala backwaters and you’ll think you’ve arrived in paradise. Much of Kerala’s appeal is its dramatic diversity, the way in which the low-lying tropical beaches and lakes meet the towering hills and tea plantations of the Western Ghats.

An Intrepid group trekking in the Kerala backwaters

The main reason many travellers come to Kerala is, of course, to experience the famous backwaters. Essentially the backwaters are a complex chain of lakes and lagoons leading inland from the Malabar Coast. After a long few months travelling or a stressful period at work, I can’t think of anywhere else in the world I’d rather be.

Once used for transporting rice and spices around the state, the long wooden houseboats are now mostly for tourists – some even have onboard Jacuzzis and personal chefs. You can spend a few days traversing the maze of backwaters, or just a day as I did. Either way it will be an unforgettable experience.

VISIT THE BACKWATERS OF KERALA ON THIS 15-DAY SOUTH INDIA TOUR

Travel away from the coast for a few hours and you could be in a totally different country, given the steep change in scenery. I stayed in the aptly named Cardamom Hills, where the sweet and dreamlike scent of its namesake permeates the air. The idyllic growing conditions mean you’re likely to spot (or more likely smell) coffee, pepper or tea plantations on your ascent up the hills.

You’ll have the best meal of your life, three times a day

Kerala travel guide India food

The real star of the show is the Kerala-style dosa, a paper-thin crepe about the length of your arm that can be loaded with coconut chutney, masala potatoes and a sour lentil and tamarind broth known as Sambar. This is traditionally served for breakfast, but you can find it all day long in one of Kerala’s many restaurants and homesteads. Kerala’s close connection to the Arabian Sea means that fresh fish is never off the menu. Try it fried up and served on a banana leaf with that omnipresent coconut chutney.

READ MORE: A MUST-READ FOODIE’S GUIDE TO SOUTH INDIA

It’s not just the food that makes Kerala unique. Where else in the world can you turn up at a tea factory, gaze across at the fields where the tea leaves were grown and drink the freshest cup of your life?

Lose yourself in a yoga retreat

Kerala is the spiritual home of Ayurveda, one of the world’s best-known forms of alternative medicine, which puts a heavy focus on yoga and meditation. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or don’t know your dharma from your downward dog, there’s something for you.

The infectiously good vibes in India’s most Southern state mean you’ll probably be in a state of relaxation from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, and there’s no better way to take advantage of that than yoga.

SUBSCRIBE TO INTREPID’S NEWSLETTER FOR TRAVEL TIPS, COMPETITIONS, GIVEAWAYS & MORE

Spiritual people travel from all over the world to Kerala’s Ayurveda academies to learn about the practice, most notably to the schools in Ernakulam (just outside Kochi) and in Kollam to the south. If that’s not your bag, you can take in the lifestyle for just a few days in one of the tranquil yoga retreats tucked away in the Western Ghats.

They say the monsoon season is the best time to practise yoga. Just as the short bursts of heavy rain are nature’s way of revitalising the land, being here at this time can have a totally cleansing effect on your body.

That’s more than just a holiday.

Some Do's and Don'ts of Solo Travel

  • While it is liberating to not have to check in with people constantly while travelling alone, make sure someone has the numbers of the places you'll be staying at.
  • If you are going to a place where your phone might not get network and you are not sure where you'll stay, get an MTNL/BSNL sim-cars for your phone as most places do catch their signal.
  • When going to a cold place, always carry en extra pair of woollen socks that can also double up as mittens for when your hands start to get cold.
  • Always have some money strapped on your person for if your luggage were to get lost, you can at least get by to a safe location with some money.
  • When backpacking, keep it light as you'll only have to carry the bag like dead weight. Backpacking to colder places is better since you can re-wear the same clothes a few times, without sweating in them and feeling mucky.

  • Easy to get around town without a car
  • Year-round good weather means you can visit in any season
  • More expensive than other options on our list
  • Can get very busy during popular travel times

Why we chose it : Barcelona is a beautiful and historic European city with something for everyone to enjoy. It boasts stunning gothic architecture, sandy beaches, a bustling nightlife and prices that will help you stretch your budget.

Spain is considerably affordable compared to other European countries, and Barcelona is its crown jewel. The city has roots tracing back to the end of the 1st century BCE and beautiful architecture throughout its winding streets, such as Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and his world-famous unfinished church, La Sagrada Familia.

If you tire of exploring Barcelona’s impressive history, gorgeous Barceloneta Beach is just a few minutes away from the city center. And at night, you’ll find plenty of entertainment options, from rooftop bars and clubs to concert venues and flamenco shows.

Barcelona is excellent for first-time solo travelers because its compact layout, wide sidewalks and excellent public transportation makes getting around town without a car a breeze. U.S. travelers can also visit for up to 90 days without a visa . However, Barcelona is more expensive than other options on our list and can be very busy during popular travel times.

Best for solo backpacking: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

  • Very affordable accommodations, food and attractions
  • Is easy to navigate, with a developed transportation system
  • Has a vibrant expat community
  • U.S. citizens need a tourist visa to visit Vietnam

Why we chose it : Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling and affordable city that offers a wide range of attractions for solo travelers, from inexpensive food and accommodations to an abundance of cultural and historical sites.

Visiting Ho Chi Minh City has become something of a bucket-list item for many backpackers. Its vibrant culture, friendly people and amazing food attract millions of tourists annually. And it’s also one of Vietnam’s safest cities .

Try some of the mouth-watering street food available in pretty much every corner of the city (especially Districts 1, 3 and 5), do some shopping at the Ben Thanh Market, visit the Notre Dame Cathedral or book a tour of the Mekong Delta to learn more about the local flora and fauna.

Getting around is also pretty easy, with many transportation options, from the new metro to buses, taxis and motorbikes. However, one thing to keep in mind is that U.S. citizens need to apply for a Visa before they can be granted entry into Vietnam.

Best for solo female travelers: Montreal, Canada

  • Very safe and walkable city
  • Visitors can stay for up to six months without a Visa
  • Toronto is only five hours away by direct train
  • Not a great option for budget travelers
  • The winter weather can be harsh

Why we chose it : Montreal is one of the safest cities in Canada, and it is only a short flight away for travelers from the U.S. The city has a vibrant art scene, a diverse population and plenty of old-world charm with its mix of classic and modern architecture.

Traveling solo as a woman might cause your loved ones some anxiety. But Montreal is a great place for women to travel alone. The city is safe and offers much to do, from beautiful architecture, such as Notre-Dame Basilica, to artisanal shopping in Old Montreal. And while the population is predominantly French-speaking, many residents also speak English, so you should have no problem communicating.

Visitors from the United States can stay in Montreal for up to six months without a visa. It’s also a good point of departure for exploring the rest of Canada. Trains depart for Toronto several times a day, and the trip is about five hours.

Accommodations in Montreal can be more expensive than in other international destinations, but enrolling in the best hotel rewards programs may help.

Best for going on solo travel tours: Chicago, Illinois

  • You can find many different types of guided tours
  • Has an excellent public transportation system
  • One of the best culinary destinations in the U.S.
  • Weather can be unpleasant if you visit at the wrong time

Why we chose it : Chicago is home to some of the best travel tours in the country. From river cruises to walking food and drink excursions, you’ll have no problem filling your time in the Windy City.

Chicago is one of the best places to travel in the U.S. It’s home to a wide variety of guided tours, covering everything from the city’s mob history to its architecture and natural landmarks. And if you love Chicago dogs or deep-dish pizza, you can take a walking food tour to enjoy some of the city’s best restaurants in a single day.

Chicago is also home to inspiring architecture, such as Willis Tower and Cloud Gate in Millennium Park. The city is a more affordable place to visit than other U.S. cities of its size, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. And if you visit in summer, you’ll have perfect weather for relaxing on the beaches of Lake Michigan, located in the heart of the city.

Depending on what you’re looking for, visiting the city between May and October could be your best bet, as winters can be very cold, with average temperatures ranging between 22 F and 37 F.

Best budget solo travel destination: Ljubljana, Slovenia

  • A highly affordable travel destination
  • Easy entrance requirements for U.S. citizens
  • Classic European architecture and dining options
  • Plenty of green spaces to lounge and relax
  • Doesn't have a strong nightlife culture
  • Crowds can be overwhelming during peak travel seasons

Why we chose it : Slovenia is one of the most affordable European countries, and Ljubljana is one of the country’s most beautiful destinations. It’s home to classic European cobblestone streets and its stunning architecture and exhibits can keep you busy for weeks without breaking your budget.

Ljubljana is an affordable European destination with beautiful green spaces and incredible architecture, including the Ljubljana Castle and the Robba Fountain. It’s also highly walkable and pedestrian-friendly, as car traffic is banned in the city center.

Hotels are cheaper here than in more popular destinations such as France or Italy, which is a big reason why Ljubljana is one of the best international places to travel . There are also many great affordable restaurants and open-air cafes.

U.S. citizens can remain in Slovenia for up to 90 days without a visa, making it easy to extend their stay with the money they save.

However, Ljubljana is not known for its nightlife, as many bars close earlier than elsewhere in Europe. Plus, it has become more popular in recent years, and crowds are abundant during peak seasons, especially the summer.

Other places to travel solo we considered

We compiled our list of the best places to travel alone by evaluating global destinations based on safety, affordability, cultural and historical sites and convenience, among other factors.

Although the following destinations didn’t make it into our top list, they’re still worth considering as you plan your travels.

Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Close to beautiful natural landmarks
  • It's possible to see the Northern Lights when conditions allow
  • Home to many museums and several Michelin-starred restaurants
  • More expensive than other popular travel destinations
  • The region's weather can be bleak
  • Long periods of darkness and sunlight can interfere with your sleep schedule

Reykjavik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with stunning mountains and beaches everywhere you look. However, it’s an expensive destination and experiences prolonged periods of darkness and sunlight that may be difficult to adjust to.

  • Some of the best food in South America
  • Miles of beautiful coastline to explore
  • Friendly locals - many of whom speak at least some English
  • Travelers can suffer from altitude sickness in some popular attractions
  • The city is sprawling, which can increase travel times and make traffic worse

Lima is a beautiful South American destination with picturesque beaches and affordable accommodations. It’s also a foodie’s dream, with a wide variety of tasty local and international restaurants available at budget-friendly prices.

Just remember that traffic congestions are common and can make it hard to get around. Additionally, some travelers may experience altitude sickness in high-altitude locations like Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Knoxville, Tennessee

  • Has beautiful outdoor settings
  • Minimal traffic
  • Moderate prices for accommodations
  • There isn't as much to do in Knoxville as in other travel destinations
  • Public transportation options are limited

Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee, but it maintains a small-town feel. It’s home to beautiful attractions, such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the World’s Fair Park, and has enough cultural exhibits and museums to keep you busy.

Nevertheless, there isn’t quite as much to do here as in other cities, and public transportation is comparatively limited.

Places to Travel Solo Guide

Traveling alone can be intimidating, but a little preparation can go a long way. This guide covers some of the best travel tips to help you plan your next solo trip.

Why travel solo?

As with everything, there are pros and cons to traveling alone.

Some of the benefits of solo travel include:

  • The ability to plan trips according to your schedule
  • Paying less for dining and experiences
  • Stepping out of your comfort zone and getting to know yourself better
  • Having more time to reflect and relax in peace

Of course, to enjoy your solo vacation to the fullest, practice general safety precautions. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, do some proper research before visiting new places and consider hiring a guide if you’re doing outdoor activities in remote locations.

How to travel alone

Traveling alone can be a wonderful experience. But it often requires more planning and initiative than group trips. The following tips for traveling alone should help you make the most of your next solo trip.

Research your travel destination extensively

The more research you do before visiting a destination, the more prepared you will be to enjoy it. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Climate : Be aware of the weather conditions at your destination to avoid potential hazards, pack the right gear and plan appropriate activities.
  • Top attractions : Plan your itinerary by mapping out the attractions you want to visit and checking their distance from your accommodations. This will help you create a realistic schedule and determine if you need to book transportation for any day trips.
  • Cost : Consider the average cost of accommodations, meals and attractions to create a realistic budget.
  • Public transportation : This is an important consideration, as visiting a destination with insufficient or unreliable public transportation translates into additional expenses.
  • Language barrier : Consider downloading translation apps or learning basic phrases in your destination’s native language if English isn’t widely spoken there.
  • Food : If you have any dietary restrictions, check the availability of suitable food options at your destination and plan your meals.

Stay connected with your friends and family

When traveling alone, keep your loved ones informed of where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing. That way, your family can call for help if they don’t hear back from you in a reasonable timeframe.

Depending on your destination, you may consider purchasing an international SIM card or an international phone plan with your existing carrier to text and call your people back home.

Finally, you can register your trip with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S. State Department. STEP is a free service that allows you to receive automatic safety and travel updates from the U.S. embassy in the country you’re visiting. It also makes it easier for friends and family to reach you in an emergency.

Consider travel insurance

If you’ve spent quite a bit of money on non-refundable travel expenses and it hasn’t been that long since you made your initial trip deposit, consider travel insurance to safeguard your investment. A travel insurance policy can help you recoup a portion of pre-paid travel expenses if you cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.

Travel medical insurance could also be worthwhile if you’re going on an extended trip, as it would cover some of your medical expenses in an emergency, including medical evacuation and repatriation. And some plans even include additional services like language support, which could be helpful if English isn’t widely spoken where you’re visiting.

Try new things

Now that we’ve covered some of the most important things to do before leaving for a solo trip, let’s explore how to get as much enjoyment out of your travels as possible while you’re there. The best advice we can give you is to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.

If you genuinely want to experience everything other cultures have to offer, you can’t spend your days doing the same things you do at home. So take a chance and live as the locals do. You’ll be happy you did.

Interact with the locals

The best way to forget you’re traveling alone is to befriend the locals. Your new friends can keep you company, guide you to the best places in town (the ones that aren’t in any tourist guides) and help to make your trip more enjoyable overall.

Meeting locals is much easier to do now than before the Internet. A wide variety of online resources can connect you to local events and groups where you can meet people. Some of the best options for this include:

  • Facebook expat groups for the destination you’re visiting
  • The subreddit for your destination (such as r/Paris and r/Chicago)

Some professional and religious groups may have international meetups as well. This can be a fantastic way to meet locals with whom you already have something in common.

Take plenty of pictures (with you in them)

Last but not least, make sure you take plenty of pictures to share with your people back home. Landmarks can be great, but you should also be in some of the photos. Most people will happily snap pictures of you if you ask nicely.

What to do when traveling alone

Traveling alone can be one of the best experiences of your life or a challenge that quickly loses its appeal. To give yourself the best chance of having an ideal trip, remember the following strategies during your travels:

  • Be flexible : Flexibility is a must for solo travelers. You’ll have more fun if you take advantage of chance encounters and throw away your schedule when necessary.
  • Take group tours and classes : Just because you arrive at your destination alone doesn’t mean you must spend every minute there alone. Group tours and classes will help you meet people and give you a chance to socialize when you’re feeling lonely.
  • Stay in places that encourage talking : If you’re concerned about feeling lonely, consider staying at a hostel or bed and breakfast. Shared accommodations like these are more affordable than the best hotels and can be a great way to meet people.
  • Gather first-hand advice : You can use Reddit and other resources to read about the experiences other solo travelers have had at your destination. These firsthand accounts can alert you to problems you may not have considered otherwise and new opportunities for fun.
  • Sign up for free rewards programs : Airlines , hotel chains and third-party booking sites often have reward programs that help you save money if you’re a frequent traveler. You may also want to look into the best airline credit cards and best travel credit cards if you plan on traveling alone regularly.
  • Prioritize your safety : Traveling alone can make you a target, so prioritizing safety is important. Be proactive about telling others where you’ll be and take yourself out of situations you feel unsure about to enjoy your trip without incident.

Staying safe is a critical consideration for solo travelers. One way to do that is by avoiding reckless behavior, such as drinking excessively and venturing alone into places locals deem unsafe.

Take the time to thoroughly research your destination, share your travel plans with friends and family and prepare an emergency plan.

Finally, consider travel insurance. If something does happen while you’re traveling alone, it will provide financial support so you can go to the hospital without worrying about breaking your budget.

You could save up enough money to make the cost of travel insurance negligible by signing up for one of the best airline rewards programs .
