The Best Length for a Travel Trailer (Size Chart Included)

Just in the last decade, I have owned, rented, and sold a number of travel trailers. I have my own share of experience with the different lengths and sizes of RVs. In this article, we get into the different travel trailer sizes and include a travel trailer size chart for you.

What size travel trailer should you buy?

Generally speaking, the ideal travel trailer length for a family of 4 is 25-30 feet long. With a 27-foot travel trailer, you can likely park in your driveway, camp at 93% of national parks, and still have room to sleep 4-6 people comfortably.

Generally, for convenience, longer travel trailers are the best choices for a family with at least 4 members or more. However, there are roads and campsites that have limits on the lengths that they can accommodate.

I have personally experienced the benefits and drawbacks of traveling in different lengths of trailers. So I made this article in the hopes of helping you determine which is the best length for a travel trailer for you. It can also serve as a guide so you can rule out the other sizes that you know won’t work for you.

No matter how long your trailer is you need to see behind you. Campsites can be tight and have obstacles (like kids). A  wireless backup camera  makes life so much easier .. and safer. Best Size Travel Trailer by Length

Some will say that anything above 30 feet is too long for a travel trailer. But the truth is that the answer to whether a travel trailer is too long lies on your tow vehicle.

As a rule of thumb, the longest trailer that your tow vehicle can pull is the one that does not exceed 75% of the maximum loaded weight of your vehicle.

Travel Trailer Length Based on Camping Preference

Some people report that a travel trailer that is more than 35 feet is a problem when they are looking for a campground to set up base on. Many of the available campgrounds, especially national parks, only have limited and small space.

However, if you own a bigger rig, finding the right campground is possible if you are willing to stay in the vicinity of the sites.

The question will lie in your preferences. Do you plan to camp in National Forests or dispersed campgrounds? If so, then having a long rig will seldom be a problem for you as these campgrounds usually can accommodate longer rigs.

If you prefer to camp in National Parks or small private campgrounds then this might prove to be a slight problem as these campgrounds usually have limits on how long of a rig they can serve.

How to Measure the Length of the Travel Trailer

The length of the travel trailer that your manufacturer specified is the box of the trailer and considered your trailer length. State-run campgrounds and some private ones usually base their site length upon the length of the travel unit itself.

Most often than not, there will be a separate parking space for your tow vehicle.

I own a 35-feet travel trailer. It is specified by the manufacturer as 35-feet. When I call to reserve a campsite, I ask for 35 feet or longer.

However, when going through roads that have length restrictions, you have to make sure to measure the whole length with your tow vehicle.

For example, in Independence Pass near Aspen, Colorado, RVs more than 35 feet in length are prohibited to pass. We have a 35 feet trailer but our total length from the bumper from the front of the truck to the bumper at the back of the trailer is 59 feet. (We know this because we were measured when we took the ferry from Seattle. )

Does Travel Trailer Length Include the Tongue and Hitch?

The trailer length and the manufacture description do not include the tongue and the hitch. The length is only the inside box of the trailer.

If you want to know exactly how long your trailer will be you need to include The rear bumper, any accessories like a bike rack, and the front tongue and hitch. The rear bumper generally adds 6 to 12 inches. The front tongue and hitch add 2 to 3 feet to the length.

So for example my 35-foot travel trailer is 38 feet bumper to hitch. It’s even longer when the  bike rack is on the back . When towing it with a truck it is 59 feet bumper-to-bumper.

How Does Length of the Trailer Affect Towing

A longer trailer will move differently behind the truck than a shorter trailer. Both the length and weight of the trailer affect the amount of weight on the tongue and swaying the backend. Most experts agree that a longer trailer is actually easier to tow because it will have a slower delay.

Weight distribution and sway bar will help you tow a trailer. This is the set that I use which is easily installed and works great.  Check the price on Amazon.

However, the total radius with a longer trailer will be longer. Therefore your turns will be much wider. In addition, you only to watch the inside corner very carefully for obstacles.

What Are the Disadvantages of a Longer Trailer?

The longer your trailer is, the more difficult it is to look for camps to stay in. Generally, state parks commonly have a length restriction of 35 to 45 feet. However, when your rig is 41 feet or above, you have to expect that you will only be accommodated by less than 10% of the campsites. On the other hand, 98% of campsites can accommodate trailers that are 19 feet and less.

Another disadvantage of a longer travel trailer is the total weight. Once you get up to 30 or more feet and 7 to 8,000 pounds you will need a 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck to tow it.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that you’re towing capacity will be reduced by up to 20% at altitude and over the mountain passes 

A longer trailer has more tail drag in the back end. You will need to be driving on relatively flat roads.  So you will be limited to maintained roads and campgrounds.  You will not be able to off-road or boondock much.

What are the Advantages of a Longer Travel Trailer

A bigger, longer-length travel trailer has many advantages.  A longer camper has more room inside giving you more space to move around.  You will also have more privacy.  My trailer with 35 feet length actually has 2 separate bedrooms with doors.

Another advantage is the convenience of the space.  A smaller camper will need to be spending time changing the inside back-and-forth between living quarters and sleeping quarters. Our first Trailer was a 20-foot long vintage camper with no slide-outs. Every night and every morning we had to transform it back into a table put the bunks away and make the bed back into a couch just to have breakfast.

A longer travel trailer can carry more weight. Once you have a camper you will want to load it up with all your favorite camping gear. You would be surprised how much your toys end up weighing.

In addition, if you are Boondocking he will be also be carrying a full tank of water to your campsite.

A larger trailer also responds to movement when towing more slowly than a short trailer. Some people even say driving a longer trailer is easier than a shorter one. The hinge point at the back of the tow vehicle and the distance to the back end of the trailer is longer. The physics determines how quickly the very back of the trailer responds to small adjustments in the front.

Summing up the Ideal Length of a Travel Trailer

The best length for your travel trailer will depend on the needs of your family. If you are traveling long-term and want more space and amenities similar to an apartment, you will require a bigger camper. If you are planning on shorter trips to national parks and sightseeing, a shorter travel trailer will likely work for you.

Before buying a camper I always suggest that you try renting at least one similar to what you’re thinking of buying. Travel trailers are difficult to rent from national companies. However, you can rent from a private owner on  Outdoorsy  or  RVezy .

To rent a camper similar to the one you’re thinking of buying simply go to the  Outdoorsy  or  RVezy  website. Once you’re on the website choose the destinations that you would like to pick up the travel trailer. Then from the options choose the number of people that should sleep and your ideal length.

The company is located in Middlebury, IN. All their towables and fifth wheels come with a 3-year limited structural warranty. Imagine XLS is one of my favorites due to its excellent styling, features, and amenities. Grand Design has only been around since 2001 and today it operates as an independent business within Winnebago Industries. This line of campers is definitely on our short list of the best travel trailer brands in 2023.

Why I Recommend the Grand Design Imagine

The Imagine travel trailer line is my preferred bumper-pull from this RV manufacturer. There are several reasons I like the Imagine trailer. First off, it comes in 21 different floor plans. Even the smallest model comes with a queen-sized bed. There is no way I would want a travel trailer with anything smaller than a queen bed.

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2 pictured above is my favorite model and probably one of their top-rated all-fiberglass campers. I like the Elite 2 for several reasons. I like that it has a dry weight of just 4,600 pounds. It can be towed with a good truck or full-size SUV. Keep in mind that 4,600 pounds is just the dry weight. For towing, you need to consider cargo weight too.

The Legacy Elite 2 comes in two-floor plans. One with twin beds and the with a dinette to 75″ x 79″ bed conversion. This model is loaded with standard features.

Headquartered in Forest River, Iowa, the company builds a huge selection of RVs, including high-quality motorhomes, campers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.

Winnebago makes five popular travel trailer models as of 2023. One of the best travel trailer brands for new RVers and experienced ones alike is the Micro Minnie (which replaced the older Minnie Drop model that made our former list of the best travel trailers.

One thing to keep in mind with the Happier Camper is that it does not have a typical toilet setup. The Happier Camper has a “ Dry Flush” toilet for RVs . That is the only drawback I see to this camper trailer. Remember, it is small, so don’t expect much room, but that is how it’s been designed. It’s modern, and makes exceptional use of the small interior.

#6. starcraft rv autumn ridge.

Another of our picks with a long history in the RV industry, Starcraft, started making metal farm equipment in 1903. In 1968 they began manufacturing campers. Today, what sets Starcraft apart from other small, affordable trailers is its smart construction. Made with TuffShell, Starcraft’s unique fiberglass wall construction, all Starcraft trailers give superior durability while remaining lightweight. This combination not only extends the lifespan of the RV but also makes towing a breeze, whether you tow with a full-size pickup or a mid-size SUV.

What Makes The Autumn Ridge a Best Travel Trailer?

Prior to the Autumn Ridge, the 2019 Starcraft Mossy Oak travel trailer was my preferred choice. This was a spacious camper available in 11-floor plans, including several travel trailer models with bunk beds . The Mossy Oak came in lengths from 23’4″ to 36’5″, making it the best predecessor of the Starcraft Autumn Ridge. This new model has many choices for RV buyers, with features that will make you want to own one too.

Lance Campers have a reputation for being very well-built and an owner base that loves the customer support offered by the company. Definitely one of the better RV brands in the industry, the designs are extremely practical and well done. Lance Campers are built with top-grade materials such as  Dual Layer Azdel composite composite panels, an eco-friendly, toxin-free composite panel superior to wood.. These trailer are also built with a one-piece Energy Star Rated Synthetic Membrane Roof.

Definitely one of the best travel trailers in 2023 (and for many years prior), Lance Camper models are renowned for their quality construction and thoughtful design. Crafted with lightweight yet robust aluminum-framed bodies, and insulated, laminated walls, Lance Camper trailers are designed to endure the elements. Their sturdy construction make them easy to tow with a variety of vehicles, from mid-sized SUVs to full-sized trucks.

Lance is confident about their RVs. In addition to the 1-year limited warranty on every trailer or truck camper they make, the company also offers a 2-year structural warranty on all models. Overall I consider Lance one of the Top 5 best travel trailer brands in the industry.

What I Like About The Lance Camper 1685

Of the 12 models of travel trailers Lance Campers makes in 2023, I like the 1685 model est. There are several reasons. The 1685 is one of their lightest travel trailer models, featuring a dry weight of just 4,690 pounds. The interior is roomy and has lots of storage space available, and the floor plan is intelligently designed and laid out for maximum space efficiency. It includes a wet bath which I have stated before, is one of my personal preferences in any RV we buy.

For a small travel trailer, the Lance Camper 1685 is outfitted with generous holding tank capacities. This reduces the frequency of water refills and dump station visits.

#8. shasta rv 18fq.

A division of Forest River, Shasta travel trailers have been a reliable companion for road travelers since 1941. If you’ve been camping a long time, the toaster-like look of the original Shaster brings back memories. What I love about Shasta trailers is they’re a great buy for the money.

Shasta trailers offer a wide range of towing capacities. Because these campers are crafted with a sturdy, lightweight aluminum exterior, they are durable but don’t add extra weight. Whether you already own a large truck for towing, or a family SUV, these campers are a great choice for anyone just starting their RV journey. Experienced RVers looking for an upgrade also find them a great fit. 

Why You Should Consider the Shasta 18FQ

Over the years, Shasta has trimmed their travel trailer line to just the Shasta model, which is available as a typical pull-behind and a travel trailer tow hauler. The pull-behind is available in a whopping 14 different floor plans. Of all those plans, my favorite is the 18FQ.

The 18FQ is very well laid out. Stepping inside, you can’t help but appreciate the attention to detail. Kitchens come equipped with a three-burner cooktop, a generous refrigerator, and a microwave oven, giving you all the conveniences of a home kitchen on the road. The 18FQ includes a 60″ x 74″ bed mattress with overhead storage space above and a clothes wardrobe on either side. It has a dry bath with a separate toilet and shower, medicine cabinet and a linen closet.

4 Best Travel Trailers for Couples in 2022

Many couples long for the open road, but too many of them let that dream remain a dream.

For those of you looking to purchase your first trailer or upgrade your current trailer, here are several choices that I consider to be the best travel trailers for couples.

2021 Grand Design Imagine 2250RK

Grand Design is well-known for its 285-point pre-delivery inspections. Their campers are often better designed and overall more reliable than much of their competition. The 2250RK is one model from their lineup which I believe most couples will appreciate. 

What doesn’t work for one situation can work perfectly for another. This layout is a good example of this truth. The bathroom separates the bedroom from the rest of the camper. If the 2250RK housed more than three people, it would be a source of constant frustration. Owned by a couple, it becomes a nice buffer for those early bird/night owl combinations. There are three living separate living spaces within this unit. Let’s go over each of them.

Living Area

It’s the classic combination in a not so classic configuration. The dinette and the kitchen are usually placed on opposing walls with a small pathway between them. In the 2250RK, they place the kitchen at the rear of the camper which gives it a large area for its counter-tops, three-burner stove, oven, microwave, and a plethora of storage cabinets. One side of the nearby wall space is occupied by two theater seats which oppose a fireplace, counter, and a telescoping 40″ TV. The theater seats are fully featured and double as a couch. They come with cup-holding armrests and pop-out leg rests. The theater seats heat, they massage, and they are super comfortable. If you want to convert it to the couch, simply lift the center armrests and its done. 

No Dining Table

It isn’t something that you see too often, and I have mixed feelings about it. It is annoying to not have a table to place your plates and random belongings, but it opens up a lot of space. It pairs with the unique layout to create an almost residential size of space where you can comfortably stretch. After a little adjusting, I don’t think most people will miss the table. There are nearby alternative surfaces, kitchen counters, and an end cabinet, so I think what you gain is worth the cost of what you lose.

This unit comes with a single slide that houses the refrigerator, the pantry, and the fireplace. It is such a great use of the space, and you should definitely check it out by using the Grand Design website’s 3d viewer. It’ll make you a fan.

The Bathroom

The Grand Designers created a nice bathroom. The size of the room and placement of the fixtures leaves plenty of space. You won’t feel cramped on the toilet and the shower is tall enough to fit 99% of you. 

The Bedroom

The bedroom is basic, but each component looks clean and feels like quality. The storage is what you might expect. His and hers hanging closets rest at opposing sides of the queen bed (60″ x 80″). Storage sits above the bed, and an over-sized bin works as the bed’s support. There isn’t a TV, but it is prepped for both TV and cable. If you want to do some reading, there are reading lights.

Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS

The E19FBS isn’t right for everybody. In fact, in most cases, I would recommend another unit because the Forest River targets a specific audience. These units are best for first-time RV buyers that want to enter the lifestyle but cannot afford the higher-tier units. The quality control isn’t as good as some other brands, and the materials are often, but not always, lower quality or thinner than some of their counterparts. However it still makes our list as one of the best travel trailers for couples. 

I love the design. Yes, it is short, so this is a game of sacrifices. It has an open floor plan, so it successfully keeps the unit from feeling claustrophobic even though it is only 20′ long. 

Minimal would be a good way to describe it. You do have several spots for storage, but none of it will add up to a comfortable full-time living level of storage. Keep that in mind if you want a seasonal unit rather than a weekend-camper.

The Bed  

If the front of the unit is considered north, the queen bed is to that north. They size it at 60″ X 80″, so it is a residential queen rather than the commonly short-changed RV version. You do have some storage both above and below. The storage above the bed is netted and the lower storage is smaller than most under-bed storage compartments.

The Kitchen

To the east, you will find the kitchen. There isn’t much counter-top space if everything is uncovered and in use. However, if the stove’s connected glass cover is closed, the added surface makes the space manageable.

The oven is great! I’ve seen a lot of larger RVs that have ovens that can’t fit much more than a tray of muffins. You have a bit more space with this camper’s oven.

It’s plastic; the whole thing: toilet, shower, shower curtain, and the sink. It’s also a bit on the small side, so there will not be a lot of room to stretch out. If the shower curtain was glass, your knees would probably uncomfortably pressed up against it. However, all of that is expected at this price point, so don’t hate on them too much. The silver lining is that this is a full bath unit which isn’t a given for a unit this size.

Coachmen – Freedom Express 259FKDS

A new year brings new models, and in the case of the Freedom Express line, a new floor plan. The 259FKDS is a fresh take on one of the classic front-kitchen designs. With this fresh take, the 259FKDS brings several needed improvements that have frustrated many otherwise enjoyable weekends. This model comes from Coachmen’s ultra-lite luxury line of travel trailers. The lightweight design, great features, and the comparatively low price point create a fantastic entry point for a wide range of prospective buyers. 

Easy To Haul

The combination of a short, lightweight trailer that sits on wide-stance axles makes this a super easy to haul. The wider stance, in a way, gives the driver training wheels by making the trailer pull like a smaller unit. This unit doesn’t come with a backup camera, but it is prepped for it, so that should be easy enough to upgrade.

Amazing Storage

I feel like a broken record by saying this again, but it has great storage. Correction, it has incredible storage. Not only is there storage in every nook and cranny of this camper, but there is a full-through exterior compartment. You don’t normally get one of those on front kitchen designs. That is one of the improvements to this type of floorplan that I was talking about earlier.

Outdoor Kitchen

Another blueprint improvement is the existence of an outdoor kitchen. It’s all there: a cabinet, a large sink with a high-rise faucet, and a medium-sized mini-fridge. Everybody loves a bit of outdoor grilling, and Coleman conveniently included one of their high-quality grills too. There is also a small pocket of space for some storage. Haylett RV suggested placing a small container of utensils in that spot which is a fantastic suggestion. 

Indoor Kitchen

It’s fully equipped and nearly as convenient as a residential kitchen. It has great storage and amazing pantry space. The counters are large and the stainless steel double-basin sink has a high-rise faucet. You have the typical cooking appliances: oven, microwave, and three-burner stove.

Room to Stretch

Whether you are tall or wide, this space should work for you. Unless the slides are closed, you should be very comfortable in all of its spaces. The tall 6’9″ ceiling, spacious floor plan, and comfortable seating will welcome almost any size or shape.

I said spacious, and I meant it. The porcelain foot-flush toilet isn’t cramped and the shower with the classy glass door takes full advantage of the tall ceilings. You get some nice storage and somewhat decent counter space.

They managed to fit in a king-size bed. Don’t ask me how. It barely fits, but it does leave enough room to make your way around its edges. Most trailers this size do not have this size of a bed. However, most trailer bedrooms aren’t designed for anything but the bed and storage, so you aren’t really losing any true functionality. I actually like this bedroom’s design more than most units. They still managed to designed to keep it feeling open. There are several large cabinets over the head of the bed, to the sides, and past the foot of the bed.

At the foot, there is a lot of shelving space where the TV is installed. Of course, that comes with all the typical entertainment hookups.

2021 Keystone Cougar 22RBS

Keystone has made one of the best small trailers available today. The 22RBS is a large trailer in a little trailer’s body. It has inherited the big-bodied genetics of the larger trailers but somehow managed to contain them within a very small 25’11” frame. As we go through each of the features, you will see how time after time this trailer exceeds all expectations.

Four Season Camping

Small trailers are very rarely built to withstand the colder temperatures. Thanks to a plethora of weather-related features, the 22RBS cannot only stand a chilly day, but it is rated for zero-degree temperatures. It has a heated and enclosed underbelly, a radiant barrier, and tank heaters. The furnace lines that warm the trailer are set next to the waterlines so that they can take advantage of the radiating heat.

All of that is great for keeping the cold out and the heat inside the trailer. What about if the interior is already at an uncomfortable temperature. If that’s the case, you will be happy to know that the 22RBS includes a 15,000 BTU air conditioner and the 35,000 BTU heater. Between those two, no matter the weather, you will be able to quickly transform any uncomfortable situation into something much more comfortable. It is incredible that the 15,000 BTU is a standard feature. If it was any other brand of trailer, this would definitely be an upgrade. This is a benefit that is included thanks to Keystone’s standardization practice; one of several.

Even though this is considered a lightweight trailer, which it is, it has the 2-inch sidewalls of a heavyweight. It’s a great money saver if you plan on using those costly environmental controls. 

If you like a nice breeze on a summer day, you will be happy to know of the many windows that you can find around the unit. Some of the windows are quite large too. The trailers slide is almost entirely composed of them. They are all tinted too, so you will still have the privacy that most of us desire.

Short and Sturdy

The chassis and axles are supremely overpowered which says great things that its ability to withstand all of the potentially damaging effects of time and weight. It also means that you will be able to have a massively increased cargo capacity. Thanks to one of the best uses of storage space; you will have plenty of ways to take advantage of it.

I know I keep bringing this up on each unit, but it is important. There is a TON of storage space. It’s fantastic that there are so many places for storage because the chassis and axles opened the ability for us to make even more room for storing items. In addition to all of that space, you also get the largest hanging closet that I’ve seen in quite a long time. It’s been noted that you could, and people have, fit an entire refrigerator in there. 

Any cooks out there should start celebrating. You might just have the best kitchen for a unit of this size. Big counter-tops, lots of storage, three-burner stove, an oven, a double-basin stainless steel sink with a high-rise faucet, a microwave, and all of it just looks fantastic.

Your touchscreen command center can connect to your phone. Anything that you would normally control from the panel is accessible from your pocket. It’s super convenient, and I am happy to say, becoming increasingly common across all RVs.

Traveling doesn’t mean having to step foot in a frenzied airport. In fact, there’s never been a better time to go camping. With the right travel trailer, you can easily leave the city behind without having to deal with anyone other than your nearest and dearest. Today’s featured-packed caravans are nothing like those you rode in as a kid, either. Not only do they look good, but they’re packed with enough luxury features that you’ll feel right at home, no matter where you are.

We’re also at the point where there’s a trailer for practically every kind of camper, regardless of what vehicle they drive. If you’re the kind of person who likes the classics, there are multiple aluminum-sided Airstream and Bowlus models to choose from. Want to bring as much of your home on the road with you? How about Living Vehicle or Land Ark’s mammoth condos on wheels? There are also caravans you can take off-road with your 4×4 and ultra-light and compact models you can tow with an EV. Some can even be turned into a mobile office if you want to mix work and play. Below are 15 travel trailers that will allow you to take to the road in just about any way you can imagine.

If you want a better understanding of how far travel trailers have come over the decades, just look at the Living Vehicle lineup. The Santa Barbara-based company’s boxy trailers are basically mini apartments you can take with you on the road. Our favorite might be the new HD24, which is far from the company’s biggest offering, but comes with all the amenities you could need at the campground—and then some.

The all-electric model, which starts at $299,995, may measure only 24 feet, but its minimalist interior still has more than enough for a bedroom, kitchen, entertainment area, and a bathroom with a dedicated shower. One particularly clutch feature is a five-by-eight-foot multi-purpose space that can be used as an office, guest room, or laundry room. If that wasn’t enough, the top-of-the-line Pro variant has a solar-assisted power system that can keep the trailer running for up to a month off the grid.

It may not be the most famous shiny caravan maker—that would be Airstream—but Bowlus is the company that gave us the first riveted travel trailer. The company, which was revived in 2014, knows not to mess with a good thing, so its well-regarded trailers—like our favorite, the  Endless Highways Performance Edition —look just like those it produced in the 1930s, only bigger and with better materials (think: alclad aluminum for the exterior and birchwood for the interior).

Despite its classic look, the $225,000 trailer has all the conveniences you expect in 2022, including heat and air-conditioning systems, a WiFi modem and plenty of outlets for charging all your smart devices. Best of all, though, might be a lithium iron phosphate that gives you the ability to live off the grid for two peaceful weeks. If you’re an animal lover, there’s also the  Terra Firma , which features a bunch of Fido-friendly features like a built-in food bowl, pet bed and remote temperature control system.

Special Features:  —Thee’s a double-sided indoor galley and an outdoor cooking area with electric and propane outlets. —The hotel-style shower has teak flooring and seating. —Lithium iron phosphate power system can keep the entire trailer running for up to two weeks.

Mammoth Overland’s latest model is a burly off-road trailer designed to withstand anything it encounters in nature. The appropriately named Extinction Level Event (ELE) rides on a set of chunky all-terrain tires and has an angular aluminum body reinforced with steel armor and skid plates. If that doesn’t sound like enough, you can upgrade to Level 3 bullet-proof armor. There’s also a built-in bear spray system too, for added security. The ELE, which starts at $67,000, is pretty compact since it’s a tear-drop trailer, but it can comfortably sleep two and has an integrated workstation inside its cabin. There’s also a swing-out kitchenette in the back for cooking.

Special Features:   —Comes with a built-in bear spray system and is available with bullet-proof armor. —Despite its compact size, the interior cabin still has room for a built-in workstation. —The swing-out kitchenette isn’t big, but has everything you need to cook a delicious meal.

Best Overall: Airstream Globetrotter

One brand leaps to mind when most of us think about travel trailers—Airstream. Its iconic aluminum-sided caravans have been instrumental in popularizing road trips and  camping  in the US for decades. One need only look at the company’s  Globetrotter  model to see why: In addition to looking beautiful, the silver-covered caravan is packed with creature comforts to keep you traveling comfortably. It’s not the brand’s largest model—that would be the flagship  Classic —but it’s available with one of six different floor plans, each of which has room for a spacious entertainment area (that can sleep up to four adults).

Inside you’ll find a full-featured kitchen, half-bathroom, shower and sizable bedroom with either a queen-sized bed or two twins. As you would expect from Airstream, the amenities are top-rate, too, like Franke faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, stainless steel appliances, Quietstream climate control system and multiple LG LED TVs. The Globetrotter starts at $120,000. If it doesn’t fit the bill, the brand has plenty of other models to choose from, including collaboration editions like the  extra-homey Pottery Barn Edition  or their  ultra-rare Supreme edition .

Special Features: —There are different floor plans to choose from, each of which features a full kitchen, half bathroom and dedicated shower. —The Quietstream climate control system barely makes a peep, even when the heater or A/C is running. —A built-in canopy provides shade when you want to spend time outside.

Good things come to those who wait. More than a decade after it was first announced, the Romotow T8 is finally available to order. The 30.5-foot caravan, which was designed by New Zealand-based architecture and design firm W2, has two main components—a fixed chassis and a smaller living space that fits just inside of it. When the $268,500 trailer is parked, the cabin slides out at the touch of a button and can be rotated 90 degrees like a swiveling USB stick. When rotated like this, the hydraulic-powered chassis can then be used as a patio. While this unique design may be the vehicle’s main selling point, its interior cabin comes with all the features you need and has enough room for six adults.

The  Escapod Topo2  is a trailer for anyone looking to take their camping trip off road with minimal fuss. The brand’s update of the classic teardrop trailer is an off-road-friendly model without any of the bulk. Unlike most of the trailers on this list, Escapod’s bedroom and kitchen area are separated from one another. The dedicated sleeping area has room for a queen-size mattress and is equipped with a stargazer window so you can really take in the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. The galley, meanwhile, is only accessible from outside the $39,500 trailer, but has ample counter space for meal prep and cooking. Both sections get their power from a VPR 4EVER lithium ion battery with some solar panels to help keep things running smoothly and efficiently.

Special Features: —Exterior is made from a single-piece of composite fiberglass that is rugged and weather-resistant. —Laser-cut tube steel frame should last for years. —Bedroom’s stargazer window offers up a beautiful view of your surroundings.

It was only a matter of time until the  electric revolution  made its way to the world of trailers and campers.  Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp’s ERV  is a rugged trailer that also happens to run entirely on battery power. Roof-mounted solar panels provide juice for a 14.3-kWh lithium battery that keeps the trailer’s many appliances running. And while the trailer is perfectly equipped for some off-road fun, thanks to a specially tuned suspension and all-terrain tires, it also packs all of the comforts of a luxe hotel room inside, including a bathroom, spacious seating area and master bedroom suite with a king-sized bed and closets. But the true highlight may be the $75,000 caravan’s full-size kitchen, which features an induction cooktop, fridge and washing machine. There’s also a Weber electric barbecue and slow cooker for making your meals outdoors.

Special Features: —Solar panels and 14.3-kWh battery power the trailer and let you go off grid. —A specially tuned suspension and large all-terrain tires let you go off-road. —The primary bedroom has enough room for a king-size bed and its own closets.

Are you looking for an aluminum-sided trailer that looks like more than just another Airstream or Bowlus’s rip-off? If so, the  Eriba Touring 820  might fit the bill. The company’s top-of-the-line caravan updates the classic silver bullet look with a retro-futuristic shape and details. Even more impressive, though, is the 27-foot-trailer’s interior. The company has packed it full of luxury amenities like a sizable, leather-covered lounge area (that can be converted into a bed), customizable mood lighting and a surprisingly fashionable bathroom. The true highlight, though, is a bedroom with a large panoramic window that offers up a gorgeous views of your surroundings. That’s good, too, since you might not actually want to leave the $88,500 trailer.

Special Features: —The kitchen has a mini wine cellar for keeping your best bottles at the ready. —The leather-upholstered entertainment area can be converted into an additional sleeping area at night. —Adjustable mood lighting will help you feel at home no matter where you are.

Almost more of a portable house than a trailer, the  Land Ark Drake  basically lets you take all the comforts of home on the road. The gigantic, yet stylish, two-level, 357-square-feet trailer can comfortably sleep seven adults. Stark and modern on the outside, the trailer features an equally clean white-washed pine and black metal decorated interior. Across its two floors, it has room for a full-sized kitchen, living room and bathroom (which includes a bathtub), along with two loft bedrooms and an office which can also be converted to a sleeping area. Its $139,000 starting price may sound a lot for a trailer, but for a two-story house on wheels it’s not that bad.

Special Features: —The two-level design means you have 357-square-feet of space. —Downstairs bathroom includes a tub for when you need to take a relaxing soak. —It has a primary bedroom and two loft-style sleeping areas.

There are plenty of EV-friendly travel trailers on the market at this point, but none are nicer to an electric powertrain than the Pebble Flow, which starts at $109,000. The futuristic vehicle is available with an optional propulsion that includes two electric motors—one situated on each wheel—to help make sure its 6,200-pound weight isn’t eating up all your battery-powered vehicle’s range. That’s far from the Flow’s only forward-thinking feature though. The trailer also comes with an “Instacamp” system that can be used to park the vehicle and set up camp (which includes leveling out the vehicle, deploying its staircase, and turning on the lights). The unique feature can also be triggered remotely via Pebble’s smartphone app.

Special Features:   —An optional propulsion system means it can even be towed by EVs. —Unique “Instacamp” system allows you to park the vehicle remotely via the company’s smartphone app. — Solar-assisted battery pack produces enough power for a week of off-the-grid living.

There are EV-friendly trailers and then there’s  Colorado Teardrops’s Boulder . Not only is the company’s latest designed to be towed by a battery-powered SUV or truck, it can also charge your EV’s battery. That ability comes courtesy a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a built-in DC fast charger that will give you some much needed peace of mind out on the open road. At the very least, it gives you the freedom to come up with a route centered around sights instead of charging stations. Aside from this very vital feature, the compact caravan has everything two adults and two children need to live off the grid for a for a few days, including a comfortable queen-sized mattress, two bunk beds (for the kids), an enclosed kitchenette and an optional climate control system. The $55,000 trailer also comes in a variety of two-tone color schemes that all look pretty sharp.

Special Features: —Doesn’t just ease the burden on your EV’s battery; it can charge it, too. —A unique bunk-bed design creates room for four people to sleep (two adults and two children). —The enclosed kitchenette has plenty of counter space.

A big trailer can be a godsend on the campground, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends. The problem, of course, is getting the hulking vehicle there. No matter how experienced the driver, maneuvering a large caravan can be very tricky. Luckily there are trailers like  Hunter Nature’s Raptor XC . The brand’s angular model looks compact but features a pull-out section that just about doubles the size of its interior. When it’s fully extended you’ll have more than enough room for a dedicated living area, kitchen and bedroom. This will come in handy if there’s more than two in your traveling party, too. That’s because the $44,000 trailer’s entertainment area can easily be converted into an additional sleeping area at night.

Best for Design Obsessives: X-Cabin300

Silver trailers don’t all need to be bullet-shaped as nice as the classic Airstream may look. Just take a gander at the X-Cabin300. The all-aluminum vehicle has a boxy shape that looks both classic and modern. The Japanese-made caravan is compact, but comes with four different interior layouts designed to meet your varied needs (it can even be used as a food truck). The $50,000 trailer is smaller than most—it measures just seven feet tall, seven feet wide, and 15 feet long—and only tips the scales at 1,650 pounds, which means a compact SUV can even tow it. 

Special Features:   —A refreshing spin on the classic all-aluminum travel trailer. —Available with four different interior layouts. —Small and light enough to be towed by a compact SUV.

It can be hard to find a trailer that fits everyone’s needs, but the  Taxa Mantis  comes close. Its no-nonsense design means it fits with nearly anyone’s style. Thanks to a pop-up roof section, ingenious use of space and plenty of storage compartments, the Mantis has all the room you and your friends and family need to camp in comfort, which can be crucial on longer trips. It’s also got all the necessary features, including a bathroom with a built-in shower, water heater, kitchenette and 8,000 BTU air conditioner. The trailer, which starts at $46,000, is ideal for off-roading, but there’s a  special Overland edition  if you want something even more rugged.

Special Features: —A pop-up roof means you don’t have to sleep in the kitchen if you don’t want to. —There’s a built-in water heater and climate control system with a 8,000 BTU air conditioner. —It comes with a built-in canopy for outdoor hangouts.

Imagine if you didn’t need a truck or SUV to tow your trailer. You don’t if the caravan in question is Happier Camper’s compact  HC1 . The Los Angeles-based outfit’s smallest model is as light as they come, with a dry weight of just 1,100 pounds, meaning it can be towed by practically any car, even a modern-day Mini Cooper. It features a semi-modular interior designed by Adaptiv that can be customized to fit your camping style—components snap in like Legos—with either a full kitchen or enough sleeping room for up to five people. You can even add solar panels if you want to go off the grid. The $34,450 trailer’s old-school design is also sure to stand out on practically any campground. Even better, no pickups needed.

Special Features: —At only 1,100 pounds, it can be towed by just about any car. —The semi-modular floor plan allows you to arrange the interior to accommodate your camping style. —The larger rear hatch opens up space when you are entertaining.

With this in mind, we've rounded up 13 of the best travel trailers so you can plan your next road trip . Whether you're a first-timer looking for tips to get started or a frequent traveler trying to decide on your next RV rental , this list includes fan favorites like Airstream, Winnebago, and Jayco travel trailers, ranging from luxury vehicles to small and lightweight campers.

What Travel Trailers to Avoid for Full-Time Living and Why

Here are the campers to avoid for live in full-time.

Alpha Wolf Floor plans are not recommended for full-time living but are great for traveling.

Although the Cherokee Alpha Wolf line offers excellent value for the price, they are spacious, well-finished, and often our recommended floor plans. In this case, we believe they are not the Forest River floor plans we would recommend for families with children who choose to live full-time in a travel trailer. 

Certain features are recommended for full-time living in a travel trailer; an entertainment center in the bunkhouse is essential and gives parents significant advantages in separating activities and privacy. Also, we mentioned earlier how important it is for the booth dinette to provide the right size for the number of people in the RV.

For example, the 2023 Cherokee Alpha Wolf 30RDB-L has two bunk beds in a bunk room. However, no entertainment center is located inside the bunk room. The Alpha Wolf 30DBH-L has the same issue. So, you will need to jump to the floor plan of Alpha Wolf 33BH-L, which includes the entertainment center appreciated when living full-time in a travel trailer with kids. However, in this model, the dinette is short-sized for only four people.

Don’t get me wrong. Alpha Wolf travel trailers are great for vacation. They are a good choice in other circumstances but not recommended for full-time living.

According to owners, Winnebago Travel Trailers are not recommended for full-time living.

It is expensive, common, and without any of the features necessary for comfortable RV living. Many RVers may have decided on this camper to establish their full-time lifestyle. But if you have the budget, go for other models and floor plans that offer what will be a priority for camper living.

Airstream Travel Trailers: Lack of Comfort for Families

Users after RV renting manifest Airstream Travel Trailers are too expensive without any comfort for a family. You pay for excellent design (if you like something super retro) and the publicity Airstream spends to appear in Hollywood in every movie they can. But you don’t pay for comfort, versatility, and high quality of life. It makes sense because they are not designed for full-time living.

We recently had our chance to rent an Airstream Classic 33FB for a week, a very long 33+ feet and a heavy 10,000 pounds.  Even for a couple like us, with no grandchildren to accompany us on this occasion, both of us working sporadically on our laptops, the cramped interior was tedious. It is impossible to prepare anything other than a simple meal because the lack of space is appalling. The absence of slides-out worsens the circulation, and we are lucky to be slim. Otherwise, using the shower or even sharing the circulation in a corridor is complicated.

How expensive? For 2023, the Airstream Classic 33FB has a starting price of $206,500, and the International 30RB is $137,400, Flying Cloud® 30FB Bunk, suitable for a family with kids, has a starting price of $124,500.

Overall Length

If you’re a senior couple brand new to RVing, you may want to consider a rig that’s shorter than what you first expected. The overall length of your travel trailer greatly affects your ability to tow carefully and safely. Towing a level trailer is one thing and having a trailer you can safely drive down the road is another. For your own safety, while towing on the road, a shorter travel trailer is always a better option.

While you may be thinking a longer rig will give you more amenities, small and lightweight travel trailers are being given all the bells and whistles you would normally expect in far larger trailers. Not only are many smaller travel trailers well-equipped, but they can bring you real opportunities to get close to your partner or loved one. If you’re full timing, you may want to consider a bigger rig, but if you only plan on taking your RV out on the weekends, a small rig should work fine.

RV parks and campgrounds also consider length to be a major component of your RV. If you’re hoping to camp just about anywhere, with little to no hang-ups, a smaller travel trailer is the way to go. Take a look at some of these small and lightweight toy haulers for inspiration. On the other hand, however, if you are a senior couple wanting ample space and privacy, a longer travel trailer may suit you well. This is especially true if you plan on full timing or living in the RV for any length of time.

Layout And Floor Plan

Finding an ideal layout and RV floor plan is harder than you think. You may not know what you need in an RV before you have the opportunity to be in one, and online tours leave a lot to be desired.  However, it’s important to discuss what you want from an RV before you go shopping. Sit down as a couple and talk about what priorities matter most for you, and then see what’s possible in an RV of your desired length.

For example, not every travel trailer is equipped with two bathrooms and a master suite. However, there are so many different RV layouts on the market today that you will no doubt find something that ticks most of your boxes.  Ideally, you can visit an RV lot and tour some of your top-choice rigs in person. However, there are plenty of resources online if you’re unable to visit a location in person.

You should consider certain floor plan features depending on what you plan on using your rig for. For example, if you plan on living in your RV full time as a retired individual, you will want an RV with a spacious kitchen and potentially even laundry hookups.  Or perhaps you are the type of couple that just needs a bed to sleep in and a reliable RV grill propane hookup for BBQs . Whatever the case may be, you will no doubt find a floor plan that works best for you.

It’s difficult to find privacy if you’re traveling and living on the road full-time. You may want to seek out an RV able to offer more privacy than others, usually in the form of more insulation and light-blocking RV curtains .  Having a master bedroom with a door that closes is usually valuable for many senior couples camping in travel trailers. This allows for even more sound and light blocking options as well as privacy should you be traveling with guests.

Accessibility Needs

Whether you need a ramp for your walker or wheelchair, or even a ramp for your elderly dog , accessibility needs are something worth considering when shopping for a new travel trailer for senior couples.  For example, accessibility can have something to do with your ability to get into the RV as well as your ability to maneuver inside the RV.

You may be seeking a rig with taller ceilings or wider aisles, for example. Not only are RV steps a bit tricky to navigate on the best days, but they are also not always the safest and most secure. Many RV manufacturers offer more secure and even automatic RV steps so you don’t have to worry about slipping and falling.

However, a ramp is always a good idea to consider installing on your rig so you can safely transition in and out of your RV. This is especially true if you are bringing in food or luggage consistently while RV camping. You may even have a CPAP machine plug and need ample space for a wheelchair to maneuver, and more. Many modern RVs have taken these needs into account and are building their RVs to suit them. But I always think it’s always good to know what to look for beforehand!

Bedroom Options

You may also want to consider the bedroom layout for you and your significant other. Many RV beds don’t offer a walk-around option, which means you’ll be crawling over your partner while they are sleeping. This isn’t ideal for many couples, especially senior couples.

Finding a bedroom with a walk-around bed is a good idea, as well as considering a dry bath as opposed to a wet bath . This way, you have access to the toilet and sink while someone is taking a shower just in case. 

Budget is absolutely something to think about while shopping for a travel trailer. Even if you’re looking for something small, maybe with just enough room for a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom with shower, your budget will play an important role. Depending on the bells and whistles you add on after the initial purchase price, your travel trailer can get expensive quickly.

However, most travel trailers are much more expensive than a Class C, and especially cheaper than a Class B .  You can always consider purchasing an older RV, especially one in need of some renovations you feel comfortable doing on your own. However, many senior couples aren’t interested in purchasing something used in need of fixing, and understandably so.

If you’re able to purchase a new RV, I would highly recommend it. This is especially a good idea because all new RVs come with some form of warranty which often cover more than you think.  Plus, if you purchase a new RV, you’re more likely to be able to work with the manufacturer and get all of the things you are hoping for. This could include a sturdier step to your front entrance, solar panels, and tank heaters so you can travel in the winter months too!

The average new travel trailer costs anywhere from $20,000 to over $100,000 depending on what you’re looking for. You can keep this cost down by purchasing used or installing many aftermarket features yourself, but if you have the budget, I say go for it!

Travel Trailer Weight

You will soon learn that towing a travel trailer is all about weight. While the average 30-foot camper weighs around 5,000 pounds , you may find options both lighter and heavier, depending on what you’re looking for.  Your travel trailer weight matters not only for towing but also matters for how you distribute gear and cargo inside the rig. Travel trailer weight mostly matters during towing when it’s crucial to ensure your tow vehicle can handle whatever size RV you purchase. You should never tow anything nearing or above your tow vehicle’s weight capacity as this can be very dangerous. 

The smaller and more lightweight your travel trailer is, the easier it will be for you to maneuver and park when it comes time to unhitch at camp. Many people find RVing daunting at first, especially if they purchase a travel trailer.  However, with a bit of practice, you’ll be a pro in no time.

Automated Accessories

Just like accessibility should be high on your list of needs in a travel trailer for retired couples, you should consider how much of your rig you want automated for your ultimate convenience. While my vintage rig from the 1970s doesn’t have any bells and whistles in the grand scheme of things, modern-day RVs have come a long way.

There are many automated options now such as RVs with   an automatic tongue jack so you don’t have to worry about cranking your RV’s nose up and down. Some jacks will even self-level, taking the stress of an uneven rig away too.  You can get an RV with automatic blinds indoors, awnings outside, and even automatic stabilizers that self-level too!

Your RV steps can extend and retract at the push of a button, and you can get fully automated systems able to sense when your tanks need emptying.  So much of RVs are automatic these days, and if you’re willing and able to spend a little extra, your needs for convenience will be met. This can be extremely important for many senior couples looking to RV for the first time.

Full-Time RV Living

I’ve already touched on this, but knowing whether or not you want to live full-time in your RV can make a huge difference while shopping for a travel trailer for senior couples. I’ m a State Park camp host, so I meet a lot of retired couples, especially those who didn’t know what they needed out of an RV when they first got started. My partner and I are young and didn’t think much of the needs of senior couples living in their rigs full time.

However, the more we got to know some older couples, the more we realized their needs are very different from ours. Many senior couples I know who live full-time in their rigs have laundry hookups, walk-around king-sized beds, and huge kitchens.  This is no doubt due to their own personal priorities, but there were a few overlaps that seem universal to many retired couples living in their travel trailers. For example, storage is another must for all of these people, especially ample food storage. 

Not only is a large and spacious residential kitchen with a freezer a must for many full-time couples, but they also love having most other creature comforts in their kitchens. Many senior couples I know who full-time in their travel trailers have had a larger RV stove and oven installed . No matter what you are looking for, keeping in mind whether or not you want to live full-time in your RV is important.

This will drastically affect your layout, storage needs, and what you expect out of an RV kitchen.  All RVs are livable full-time to some extent. However, you may find an RV is lacking compared to a more traditional residential home. You may want to have a tankless hot water heater installed much sooner than you originally expected! 

Tips For Senior Couples In Travel Trailers

If you’re a senior couple considering a travel trailer for either weekend visits or full-time living, there are a few more things for you to consider before making a final decision. Let’s take a look at some of our top tips now!

Take Your Time On The Road

While RVs aren’t considered entirely unsafe to drive , there are many things you can do to further extend your safety while on the road. This is especially true for travel trailers, as these rigs are much more dangerous to drive than Class Bs or other motor coaches.

Taking your time while driving is always important, especially when towing a travel trailer. Perhaps you’re already a couple that prefers the slow lane, but perhaps you like to put your foot down! Regardless of your driving style, taking your time while towing a travel trailer is essential.

You should always observe posted speed limits and potentially even drive slower than the recommended limit by 5 to 10 miles per hour. The way your travel trailer is weighed can have a serious impact on your driving ability and safety while on the road, which brings me to our next tip.

Make Sure Trailer Weight Is Evenly Distributed

Knowing how to evenly distribute the weight of the cargo inside your travel trailer is key for safety as a senior couple on the road. Why is this the case? It’s simply due to the way your travel trailer is designed!

Think of your travel trailer like a see-saw: placing all of the weight toward the back of a travel trailer will cause your rig to lean backward with the nose up in the air. This is not an ideal way of towing. Not only should you place more weight toward the front of your rig, but you should also know how much your rig weighs overall . 

It’s important to be able to bring along everything you need, especially if you are a retired couple living full-time in your travel trailer. However, knowing how to best distribute the weight inside your rig so your trailer remains level is just as vital. 

Practice Hitching Up 

There’s a lot to think about when packing a travel trailer up and hitting the road for the first time. If you’re a little rusty when it comes to towing, it’s a good idea to practice hitching up.  Watching videos about how backing travel trailers is a helpful way to learn, especially when tackling towing for the first time.

I’d also recommend utilizing hand signals and communication while hitching up and towing, although this shouldn’t be much trouble for a senior adventure couple!  The more you practice, the better you’ll get. It’s never too late to learn something new, and the process of hitching up and unhooking your RV may bring the two of you closer together! 

Consider Automated Features 

If you’re concerned about maintaining and living in your RV without a certain level of automation, you aren’t alone. Senior couples have different needs than young couples who are traveling in their new travel trailers.

This is why it’s important to consider purchasing an RV with a decent amount of automation in the first place or plan on adding these features after you make your final purchase. Some of these may include:

• Automatic tongue leveling jack
• Automatic stabilizers
• Tank monitors and indicators
• Motorized awnings
• Motorized front steps
• Climate control and propane monitoring

Keep in mind that all of these things will no doubt cost extra, whether or not they are already included in your desired RV layout. However, these features may make your experience as a senior couple far more enjoyable and easy.

As I’ve already mentioned, knowing whether or not you plan on living in your RV full-time is important to decide before you go shopping. Your full-time living needs are no doubt very different from your weekend summertime camping requirements.

These needs can include more storage, a chef’s kitchen, heated tanks, or additional insulation enabling you to camp throughout all four seasons comfortably. You may also want adequate laundry facilities as well as a spacious bathroom or bedroom. 

No matter your needs, there’s a travel trailer out there that’s perfect for you. It may take some time and discussion with an RV manufacturer, but you will no doubt find what you need so you and your significant other can camp and RV comfortably. 

Carry Spare Gear

Carrying some backup kit is never a bad idea, and something as simple as a generator could save the day , especially if you run out of solar power and aren’t hooked up at the campground! I always find it wise to carry all the essentials with me in my rig, as it’s impossible to know when we may need to use them! A flashlight, first aid kit, and generator are three of my top recommendations for newbies hitting the road for the first time.

I love that this system allows me to control my slide-outs, trailer temperature, and holding tank levels, all with Jayco’s convenient technology. Having automatic features on board makes things significantly easier, especially for older travelers or those living full-time in their travel trailers.  Jayco has thought of many unique features to make life on the road a breeze with the Jay Flight, including easy-to-use front steps and a wider entry door.

Best For Full Timers: Palomino Puma

With 24 possible travel trailer floor plans, the Palomino Puma is a wonderful choice for full-time RVers. The number of floorplans is pretty much unbeatable, and it’s never been easier to find a trailer ticking most if not all the right boxes. The Puma has durable construction thanks to powder-coated frames, super lube axles, friction-hinged entry doors, and even an AlphaPly roof membrane with an impressive limited lifetime warranty!

It’s hard not to immediately fall in love with the Palomino Puma, and since I’m a full-timer, I can confirm this rig has an array of useful features for a home on wheels! Some floorplans even have washer and dryer prep and walk-around beds for ultimate convenience and comfort. It would be nice for the power tongue jack to be a standard feature, but unfortunately, it’s an upgrade.

However, a good quality jack able to handle the load of your RV is a game-changer on the road – you never know when you might need to use one to get level or assess the underneath of your RV. Every floor plan has a convenient and functional kitchen, with a decorative easy-to-clean backsplash and a classy glass induction cooktop. The residential-sized fridge is a big draw for me as I need to stay fuelled up on the road with healthy, balanced foods, and a fridge makes this much easier.

I enjoy the soft LED lighting throughout the Puma, along with the reliable rack and pinion slide-out systems which transform the space even more. For ease of driving, there’s a backup camera, and for an eye-pleasing effect, hardwood cabinetry adorns both the kitchen and the bathroom. This RV is safe, stylish, and functional, all in one!

The Puma also includes a simple control panel, providing access to the slides, awnings, heater, water, and more. It’s effortless to control everything with a simple flip of a switch, and I’m confident using all of the onboard appliances because of this. It’s also possible to upgrade to a tankless propane water heater so hot, long showers never have to be sacrificed again!

Overall, the layouts are built for enjoying quality time with your significant other. The living room is spacious and open, the kitchen provides ample space to cook together, and the bedrooms are cozy and comfortable. Most Accessible: Coachmen Northern Spirit

The Coachmen Northern Spirit has 10 unique floor plans ranging from 24 feet all the way to almost 40 feet. This is a lot of travel trailer on offer, and with such a wide variety of layouts and lengths, there’s plenty for senior couples to think about. Coachmen has done a fantastic job with making their RVs accessible and complete with signature touches I struggle to find on other RVs.

Coachman has taken its time building rigs with unique features, such as full under-bed closet storage, wireless charging stations, and special locations for all things pets. Any senior couple with a dog will feel more than comfortable bringing their pooch along. I particularly like the exterior dog leash clip that I’d definitely be using with our pup on vacation! 

Along with innovative pet-friendly features and great accessibility, this travel trailer also has some of the most unique storage solutions I have ever seen. There are pass-through fishing pole containers, more secretive drawers and cupboards for keeping valuables, and ample room to store all of my kitchen belongings too!  

Speaking of unique storage options, a few of the Northern Spirit floor plans come with a unique entertainment system combined with pantry storage for dry goods. The entertainment center swings out to reveal more than enough dry pantry storage and even a wardrobe with a closet rod. This creative thinking is just a small part of what has kept Coachmen in the RV game for so long. 

Some of the standard exterior features include a dog hitching post, a dog wash area, and solar prep for keeping electricity topped up when camping off the grid. It also has an included heavy-duty front entrance step, as well as scissor-style stabilizers so I don’t need to worry about the travel trailer rocking or shaking which makes me nervous!

This rig may appeal to many of you who are RVing for the first time given its considerable standard features. The Northern Spirit has motion-activated floor lights for optimal safety, optional theater seating, and an extra second AC unit in the bedroom. These additions do bring up the overall price, however, Coachmen are a brand recognized for their fair and budget-friendly pricing, so the final figures may still be attainable!

I see the Forest River r-Pod throughout Oregon and the West Coast, and I think this is due to the easy hitch-up that gets campers on the road quick-time! There are 11 floorplans to choose from, although some layouts are only available with the microlite model of the r-Pod.  The main perk to these Forest River trailers, aside from their reliable name, is the overall modest size.

The longest length for any one of the r-Pod floor plans is 25 ft, making it easy to tow, park, and store – a game-changer for seniors hitting the road in a camper for the first time. While 25 feet may not feel enough if you plan on living in your RV full-time with your significant other, these floor plans have a lot to offer, and the smallest one is a tiny 15 feet long!

I not only love the walk-around queen bed that allows me to get up early in the morning without disturbing my partner but also the full dry bath . Having a toilet and shower on board an RV is a must for me, as I don’t want to sacrifice the comfort of a hot shower, especially when winter RVing! Some of these floor plans include bunk beds, electric fireplaces, optional residential-size fridges, and even a Murphy bed like the r-Pod 153 floorplan showcased in the video above.

Solar isn’t a standard feature with the Forest River r-Pod, however, I’m grateful for the optional solar package that can easily resolve any solar power needs. The lack of initial solar on these rigs means they aren’t the best for boondocking and camping off-grid. With the addition of some Forest River extras, however, it’s possible to transform the r-Pod into an off-grid rig! 

While the size of this rig might be too small for some senior couples, the ease of hitching and towing may make this RV more appealing. Plus, it has ample storage and plenty of privacy features, such as tinted windows and mini blinds.  If you’re looking for a lightweight and capable RV built perfectly for two, it’s worth taking a close look at the Forest River r-Pod. It has a lot to offer senior couples, especially those interested in camping on the weekends rather than hitting the road full-time.

Most Stylish: Airstream Flying Cloud

I love the retro, classic vibe, and nothing matches this aesthetic better than Airstream travel trailers. The Airstream Flying Cloud is one of the company’s most popular trailers and it’s not hard to see why! It has style and grace from the exterior, but beyond the aluminum shell is a luxurious interior, fit for any couple of any age. This aluminum beauty is full of features and has 8 floorplans to discover and explore.

Ranging from 23 feet to 30 feet, this compact silver bullet has everything I could ever imagine having in a modest-sized RV without spending a fortune.  With storage throughout, everything can come along for the RV adventure, and with ample cabinetry and storage cupboards, all belongings can be packed away fashionably.

One of the most attractive features of the Airstream Flying Cloud in my eyes, is the rear hatch opening. The back end of this aluminum rig lifts open, allowing complete and total access to the outside world, all from within the comfort of the RV. Letting morning sunlight flood my RV is one of my favorite things to do, but this addition means the natural world can enter the RV, bringing fresh scents and crisp air.

The kitchen isn’t the largest given the overall length of these rigs, but it is complete with stainless steel finishes and a full-size cooktop and oven combination so I’m not limited by what I’m able to cook. There’s also a lot of technology inside of this Airstream, including Bluetooth capabilities and Wi-Fi allowing me to stay connected wherever I am on the road.

This rig is also pre-wired for solar and has a backup camera as a standard feature which is particularly handy for maneuvering and parking. There’s a lot to love about Airstreams, not just their stylish features. The Flying Cloud is a fantastic example of functionality and beauty coming together. It boasts a retractable automatic awning, blackout curtains, and roller shades, with some floor plans offering features such as a dedicated office space and bunk bed to suit every traveler!

Best For The Adventurous Couple: Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX

Part of the fun of RVing is breaking away from the campground and exploring life in the wild by boondocking or going off-grid. The Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX is an awesome choice for adventurous couples and has fantastic off-grid capability too. This Winnebago rig can run for up to five days without shore hookups; remarkable for boondocking adventurers!

The Micro Minnie FLX comes complete with solar panels on the roof, along with additional space to add more if ever electricity usage were to increase. There are 4 floorplans with this travel trailer, and all are around 22 feet long. The majority of the layouts only sleep 3 people, but the 21OOBH bunk model is capable of comfortably sleeping 4 which is great news if the grandchildren want to come along for a weekend trip to the lake!

This Winnebago may not be huge, but it has a full-size kitchen, equipped with three burners, a microwave oven, and easy-to-clean stainless steel accents.  Even energy-efficient appliances have been used throughout the Micro Minnie FLX, meaning they can be run using a single solar panel.  They have also given this travel trailer ample insulation so camping throughout the year is possible. Some floor plans also offer walk-around queen beds or Murphy beds .

This versatility is ideal for enhancing the interior space which is essential when more than one camper is on board! Having a few more floorplans would be useful, as 4 layouts isn’t really much choice at all, but they are all innovative and unique in their own way, so there’s nothing to lose out on! Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Camper Trailer

The dry weight of the camper trailers listed in our guide ranges from 1,458 to 6,122 pounds. That weight typically excludes water, gas, batteries, or additional accessories like rooftop tents and racks. Pay attention to the dry weight of the camper so you can determine if the build is within the payload of your vehicle.

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum total weight the trailer can safely weigh. The GVWR includes the dry weight, also known as the curb weight, plus the weight of people, accessories, supplies, and all your outdoor gear.

The GVWR of these trailer picks ranges from 2,200 to 10,000 pounds. You’ll need the GVWR so that you can calculate how much equipment you can safely haul in the trailer on the road, as well as how many people can sleep inside.

Clearance & Tires

If you plan on driving through rugged terrain that would require 4WD, you should invest in a trailer with generous ground clearance and off-road tires , and consider an articulating hitch to prevent toppling over on uneven terrain. Sturdier tires can also provide better traction on slick roads with snow or rain.

When we take a close look at tires, the TigerMoth Overland is outfitted with the 225/75R16 ( Cooper Tires Discoverer AT3 LT ), offering a tread guard against rocks and gravel, extreme durability, and solid grip on wet roads or trails.

By comparison, the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15 Tires, which are great for towing stability and a high load capacity but are not ideal for rough terrain.

Sleep Space

At a minimum, our favorite compact travel trailers offer space for two people to sleep. A portion of these designs include cabins with a nonconvertible queen-size bed. Other trailer designs have options for a couch-to-bed conversion, like the TigerMoth Overland or Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 , or a structure that supports a rooftop tent.

The larger travel trailers on our list feature a range of comfortable overnight options. The designs range from daytime couches and fold-down Murphy beds to bunk beds to dinettes that transform into a bed. If you’re a taller or wider person, pay attention to the specific bed size.

For instance, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS has a full queen-size mattress, whereas some trailers will have a narrower queen-size mattress. The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS also has a bunk bed that can fold up, so more space is available for storage when the bed isn’t needed.

Also, not all mattresses are created equal. The pad in the TigerMoth Overland is firm with no cushion or give. However, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 features a high-density memory foam mattress, and the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has a pillow-top memory foam mattress.

A handful of the tidiest travel trailers have indoor space that’s solely dedicated to a queen-size bed and cubbies. Other tight trailers have beds that convert into a daytime couch or even have a table that can be easily installed. We like that even when the couch is pulled down into a bed in the TigerMoth Overland , there’s still a space to pull our shoes on and off.

Many trailers include an awning, which becomes a gem when you consider how much more space everyone will have to lounge out of the sun and rain at camp. Larger travel trailers typically have indoor sofas and dining tables that often convert into a bed.

Pricier, larger travel trailers have indoor kitchens with a range of features. Inside, you’ll often find a microwave, refrigerator, freezer, oven, sink, two- or three-burner stove, cabinets, countertop space, and dining table.

More compact, less expensive travel trailers have outdoor kitchens, and there’s a variety of unique designs. A galley organizes the kitchen area on the back of the rig, like on the Timberleaf Classic Off-Road Teardrop Trailer .

Other designs have pull-out drawers or fold-down units with the pantry, stove, sink, or countertop like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 or the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer .

The spacious travel trailers on our list have indoor bathrooms with a toilet and standup shower. Tinier travel trailers don’t have an indoor bathroom, but a handful have an outdoor shower head with warm water hookups like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 and Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper .

If your camper trailer doesn’t have an indoor bathroom and you’re posted up in a remote place, be sure to research that location’s human waste and Leave No Trace requirements — whether that means digging a cathole or using a WAG bag.

Interior Storage

Interior storage space is great for organizing apparel, cosmetics, electronics, and other comforts. Inside, travel trailers often feature storage space like shelves and cubbies, but not all offer a latch system to hold items in place while driving around.

There can also be storage space beneath the mattress. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer had an aluminum interior frame, which extended onto the doors, with numerous holes to clip carabiners, hang dish towels, or slide in hangers to dry gear like our dense wetsuits .

Exterior Storage

Outside, tidy travel trailers can also have a toolbox, tongue box, or racks for storing gear and equipment. Large travel trailers also often have storage compartments facing outward, which sometimes include pass-through storage space.

Doors & Windows

We really appreciate it when the doors and windows are built to last in a travel trailer. Windows are great for allowing ample light and can help a space feel bigger, but shades are equally important for privacy and to block out the light of the full moon or campground lamp. Slide-down shades can black out the inside of the trailer, and bug screens can enable airflow regardless of bug activity. It’s also nice to have windows that can be locked when they’re cracked.

Electric, Solar, Gas, and Water

You’ll need to closely consider how much energy and resources you’ll need between trips to a gas station, store, or an overnight stay with shore power.

Even if you don’t plan to charge your laptop or watch television — an option in larger travel trailers — it’s nice to have battery power. The battery can run indoor and outdoor LED lights around the kitchen and doors, as well as the roof exhaust fan — and it can charge up phones. Many travel trailers feature a prewired solar inlet to get an energy boost off solar panels, too.

• Hard-sided trailers  are the same as tent trailers with the two exceptions they have hard-sided walls and a hardtop. Keep in mind, that this model will be heavier than the first option for towing.

9. Venture RV Sonic Lite SL169VBH

This travel trailer has a unique floorplan concept, with 87-inch long bunks at the rear of the trailer and a free-standing table for dining instead of a bench dinette.

It feels a little bit more like a home than a camper inside. The main bed is a 60” x 75” murphy bed that drops down behind the sofa, which provides half of the seating at the storable table, supplemented with high-grade folding chairs.

There’s also a full-length shirt closet and StorMor nightstands wired with 110V outlets and USB charging ports.

10.  Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH

Winnebago has eleven Micro Minnie floorplans, and four of them have bunkhouses. 

We went with the 2100BH model because it has a spacious floorplan due to the open layout and dinette slide-out, but it’s still well under 30 feet long at 21 feet, 11 inches.

The Micro Minnie 2100BH is constructed on a NXG engineered chassis with Azdel fiberglass walls and radiant foil insulation.

The roof is a single piece TPO membrane, with a gel-coat fiberglass front cap. It has a 13-foot power awning, exterior LED lighting, speakers, and is prepped for a back-up camera.

When you step inside, you’ll find a comfortable full-sized master bed with overhead storage to your right, with the main living area to the left.

The 44” x 72” convertible dinette is built on a slide-out to maximize your living space inside the trailer. 

Across from the dinette, the kitchen has a spacious gas/electric refrigerator, microwave, three-burner cooktop with oven, stainless steel sink and overhead cabinets.

Next door, the bathroom has everything you need in a condensed space, including a foot-flush toilet, shower with tub surround, skylight and power vent.

Two 28” x 72” bunks finish the interior space, and there’s an exterior Pack-N-Play door to access the bunk area as you prep for your adventures.
