Homes of the rich.

by Georgie Darling Published on February 2, 2024

At Luxe Digital, we independently research, review, and recommend products we love and that we think you will love, too. Learn more about how we curate the best products for you .

Think of your dream property and then think a little harder and you’ll begin to get an idea of what the most expensive homes in the world look like.

Because what happens when you bring together an architect limited only by gravity and an owner with a bottomless wallet? You get a luxury house filled with bespoke features tailored exactly to your personality and taste.

And the sky’s the limit: that could mean an outdoor theatre overlooking the Mediterranean sea, an entirely circular building, or whole new levels of exciting tech.

These million dollar homes knew no limits when it came to furnishing or decorating. “Mega mansions” or “a million dollar house” doesn’t really cover it: the world’s biggest house comes with 240 bedrooms and 535 other rooms.

Some of the other most expensive homes ever sold are vertical palaces designed to withstand earthquakes or sprawling estates with breathtaking views. The homes of the rich know no boundaries.

The 13 most expensive houses in the world

Psssssst , you don’t have to live in the most expensive house in the world to upgrade your home to look and feel like million bucks. Check our round-up of the best online furniture stores to find the best places to shop for beautiful furniture online.

1. Buckingham Palace, United Kingdom

Buckingham Palace might not be put up for sale anytime soon, but if it were, it would be worth around $4.9 billion dollars, making it the most expensive house in the world. With 240 bedrooms—188 staff rooms and 52 royal and guest bedrooms—as well as a swimming pool and doctor’s surgery, it’s a place called home by the British Royal Family and is also open to the public for guided tours.

In total, this rich house—if you can call this Crown property a mere house—contains 775 rooms , including 19 staterooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms. It’s also got a huge team of staff as well as beautiful gardens. Rumour has it there are a few other secret rooms dotted throughout this huge luxury mansion. Spread over around 77,000 square meters, Buckingham Palace is also one of the biggest houses in the world .

2. Antilia, India

most expensive houses in the world antilia mumbai luxe digital

The world’s most expensive private residence in the world, Antilia is owned by Mukesh Ambani, the richest person in India, and is named after a mythical island in the Atlantic. This 400,000-square-foot building sits in the most prestigious postcode of India and reaches 27 floors, with each double-height ceiling counting as two floors. But, despite its huge height, it’s designed to withstand huge earthquakes.

This beautiful Mumbai residence was designed around traditional, natural elements, but also has an entire six floors dedicated to parking to accommodate the wealthy Indian family’s large fleet of expensive cars. It also features a huge temple, a number of luxurious guest suites, three helipads, a health spa with indoor pools, a ballroom and yoga studio, an ice-cream parlor, and a private movie theatre for all to enjoy. It even has a snow room that spits out snowflakes if India’s high temperatures get a little too much.

3. Villa Leopolda, France

most expensive houses in the world villa leopolda france luxe digital

The most expensive private residence in Europe , Villa Leopolda sits between two of the most prestigious parts of the world: Monaco and Nice. Sumptuous and stylish, it’s a luxury property in the French Riviera with a regal past and first belonged to King Leopold II of Belgium (hence the name). Since then, it’s passed through the hands of many elite owners and has also been used as a film set, for Alfred Hitchcock’s “ La Main Au Collet ” (To Catch a Thief).

When Lebanese-Brazilian banker Edward Safra, its previous owner, passed away in 1999, he left the villa to his wife, Lily Safra (nicknamed ‘The Gilded Lily’).

The lavish house’s huge swimming pool and excessive gardens reportedly require the daily work of more than 50 gardeners. Across the entire luxury property, there are 80,000 square feet of space.

4. Villa Les Cèdres, France

most expensive houses in the world villa les cedres france luxe digital

Built roughly around 1830, the 18,000-square-foot Villa Les Cèdres (named after the many surrounding Cedar trees) is more of a luxury palace than it is a simple home. Set across 35 acres of land in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the South of France, this historic luxury mansion is fit for a king —and was once owned by one, King Leopold II of Belgium.

The century-old luxury mansion was acquired in 2016 by Italy’s Campari Group (who owned the property through its acquisition of the liqueur Grand Marnier) and sold to Ukrainian billionaire and businessman Rinat Akhmetov in 2019.

As well as endless bedrooms and communal spaces, this European luxury mansion has an Olympic size swimming pool, a stunning ballroom, and even a stable with room for up to 30 horses. Outside, you’ll find 15,000 plants and 20 greenhouses with tropical flowers from all over the world. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and has multiple balconies swathed with palm trees.

5. Les Palais Bulles, France

most expensive houses in the world les palais bulles luxe digital

Possibly the most extravagant home on the French Riviera , the Palais Bulles or, Bubble Palace is a little different from your ordinary million-dollar house. As its name suggests, this luxury property in Théoule-Sur-Mer near Cannes is shaped like a huge, terracotta-colored bubble. A bird’s eye view at the Palais Bulles reveals a collection of circular buildings. And the circle theme continues inside.

Take a walk through The Bubble Palace, and you’ll spot cylindrical beds, swimming pools and artwork. The luxury villa was designed by Hungarian architect Antti Lovag and features ten suites decorated by different contemporary artists. As well as the series of round rooms, this luxury mansion is also home to a sprawling, open-air 500-seat amphitheater on the hillside grounds, with views overlooking the Mediterranean sea.

The Bubble Palace was last owned by the late French fashion designer Pierre Cardin who acquired the historic mansion in 1992 as a luxury holiday home and has been the backdrop for many a fashion and celebrity event. And since Cardin’s death in 2020, the entire estate is available to rent, but not (yet) available to the public.

6. The Odeon Tower Penthouse, Monaco

most expensive houses in the world the odeon tower penthouse luxe digital

The Odeon Tower Penthouse might not feature a garden but it does offer spectacular views across Monaco. Known as the world’s most expensive flat , it sits at the top of a 560ft skyscraper. Overlooking the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, The Odeon Tower Penthouse has its own 360-degree infinity pool, complete with a private water slide for those who fancy a salt-free swim.

The luxury penthouse includes 38,000 square feet of space spread across five levels, with five kitchens spread throughout each floor. It’s got a dance floor, a luxurious bathroom, and even a few staff bedrooms. A parking space for the property is thought to cost around $330,000.

7. Four Fairfield Pond, United States

most expensive houses in the world four fairfield pond luxe digital

The Hamptons are renowned for being expensive, but American Billionaire businessman Ira Rennert’s marvelous Italian Renaissance–style home, Four Fairfield Pond (named after the adjoining body of water on the luxury property), takes it to the next level. One of the most expensive houses in the United States, this is a luxury mansion designed for anyone who gets bored easily, thanks to its sweeping grounds and an endless array of facilities.

As well as the 18 bathrooms and 21 bedrooms, a stay here includes access to three swimming pools, a private basketball court, a two-lane bowling alley, and a 164-seat theater. Known as one of the largest homes in the United States, the 63-acre beachfront property also features 12 chimneys , a private cinema, a 91-foot-long dining room, and a billiards room, two tennis and squash courts, and its own power plant.

The Four Fairfield Pond is also home to a huge garage that can park up to 100 cars, perfect for a collection of the most expensive cars in the world .

8. 18-19 Kensington Gardens, United Kingdom

most expensive houses in the world 18-19 kensington gardens luxe digital

One of the most elite streets in the UK, the whole of Kensington Gardens is known for being full of millionaire properties, but 18-19 Kensington Gardens takes things a little further. Known as Nour Palace, this neo-Georgian mansion was bought in the 1990s for five million dollars.

Years of restoration—and a $90 million investment—turned it from a derelict, half-put-together house into a millionaire’s dream, with a value that’s grown exponentially. Stunning rooms come complete with traditional charm, with manicured gardens around the entire property to be enjoyed on warm spring days. A lot of the luxury property owned by Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal was renovated using the same marble as that used to build the Taj Mahal (hence the mansion’s nickname Taj Mittal). There’s a hairdressing salon, an indoor swimming pool, a spa, steam showers, and saunas as well as parking for 20 cars.

9. Beyoncé & Jay Z’s Malibu Mansion, United States

most expensive houses in the world malibu mansion jay z beyonce luxe digital

In 2023, power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé procured California’s most expensive house —an architectural minimalist marvel, sparing no expense. Looking onto Malibu’s coastline, the behemoth property sprawls over 30,000 square feet and cost the music moguls $200 million (a “bargain” considering the house was initially listed at $295 million).

But it isn’t just the real estate’s prime location (high above Paradise Cove, with unobstructed ocean and coastline views) and extraordinary size that is responsible for such a price tag; it’s also the home’s world-class architectural pedigree. Designed by award-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the concrete-clad compound features enormous hallways, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and manicured lawns.

10. Ellison Estate, United States

most expensive houses in the world ellison estate luxe digital

Billionaire Larry Ellison doesn’t just own one property, but his Japanese-style Ellison Estate might just be the most impressive. Located in Woodside, California, this incredible waterfront property is one that’s definitely worthy of its never-ending attention. It’s actually a collection of houses inside one giant property, alongside a man-made lake, a tea house, and a bathhouse.

It’s designed to settle into its surroundings, with a lodge-style design throughout and all of the comfy, cozy velvet sofas and fireplaces you could ever need. Set inside a gated community, it’s arguably the world’s coolest lake house and sets the scene for a relaxing holiday.

11. Palazzo di Amore, United States

most expensive houses in the world palazzo di amore luxe digital

Beverly Hills-based Palazzo di Amore looks just as expensive as it is. Set in a prestigious neighborhood with spectacular views of Los Angeles and the surrounding canyons, this Mediterranean-style estate was initially built in 2014 and was regarded as the most expensive residential complex in the United States at the time.

Then, it was renovated both inside and out by its owner, Jeff Greene, who more than doubled the value of the property once he’d spent a few years changing it up.

12 bedrooms and 25 bathrooms, and a Turkish spa are just the start here; the luxury mansion also boasts a 15,000-square foot entertainment center, a bowling alley, a 50-seat movie theater, a disco, and even its own hillside vineyard.

12. Gemini, United States

most expensive houses world gemini florida - Luxe Digital

This is the most expensive house sold, to date, in Florida. A company controlled by software billionaire and Oracle founder Larry Ellison bought the ocean-to-lake estate at 2000 S. Ocean Blvd. in Manalapan from a trust controlled by Netscape co-founder Jim Clark.

Jim Clark initially bought the estate and parts of nearby Bird Island only two years earlier for a combined price of $94.37 million. Adding an extra $100 million in only two years makes it a handsome investment.

Gemini has access to both the beach and the ocean, thanks to its unique location. The 15.65-acre property is divided by South Ocean Boulevard and has 1,200 feet of beach along the Atlantic and 1,300 feet of frontage on the Lake Worth Lagoon. There are multiple houses on the estate, offering a total of nearly 85,000 square feet of living space, inside and out, with 33 bedrooms, 34 bathrooms and 13 powder rooms.

13. Seven The Pinnacle, United States

most expensive houses in the world seven the pinnacle US luxe digital

This beautiful property sits on the slopes of Montana, a Christmas-card-ready luxury house that’s calling out for cozy evenings sat around a fire while it snows outside. The largest property with a private golf and ski community in the world, you’ll find Seven The Pinnacle at Yellowstone Club, surrounded by tall trees.

Inside is even more impressive than its exteriors, with 123 rooms in total. Those include 10 bedrooms, a large and well-equipped spa with a massage area, a gym, both an outdoor and indoor pool, and fireplaces dotted throughout. It covers an area of 57,000 square feet in total.

14. The One, United States

most expensive houses the world one luxe digital

Few modern luxury homes have the same storied past or as ambitious an asking price (originally marketed for US$500 million) as film-producer-turned-developer Nile Niami’s The One. The Los Angeles mega mansion was once considered not only to be the most expensive house in California but also the most expensive house in the US. But it was also The One riddled with debt and legal issues.

The One was listed for $295 million in auction in January 2022—making it the most expensive home for sale in the US at the time—but was finally sold for US$141 million in March 2022 to Richard Saghian, CEO of fast fashion company Fashion Nova. Despite its flaws, this is a beautiful luxury property with gorgeous views in a breathtaking setting. Sitting on nearly four acres of land in the exclusive neighborhood of Bel Air, the 105,000 sq ft luxury mansion is said to be America’s largest private residence .

The One is home to 21 bedrooms, 42 bathrooms, and multiple kitchens, as well as all of the other essentials—like a nightclub, a bowling alley with four lanes, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, a salon and wellness spa, a juice bar, a  home gym , a 50-seat theatre, and a running track. It has not just an infinity swimming pool, but also six other water features, like a jacuzzi and a moat that surrounds the luxury house.

15. Xanadu 2.0, United States

most expensive houses xanadu 2.0 luxe digital

Bill and Melinda Gates’ impressive luxury mansion overlooks Lake Washington in Medina, Washington, and took seven years to build from scratch. Previously known as the richest man in the world, Bill Gates went above and beyond when it came to designing his waterfront villa. The estate covers 66,000 square feet and features 500 Douglas fir trees.

It’s filled with state-of-the-art technology, like tiny pins attached to each guest’s lapel so they can control lighting, music, and temperature. It’s got an artificial stream filled with real salmon and trout, as well as six kitchens, seven bedrooms, a trampoline room, a library, and a computer-controlled maple tree , for when the 50 gardeners don’t get time to look after it themselves.

Look at What a Few Billion Can Buy: The 10 Most Expensive Homes on the Market

It’s a tough time to be an agent on a listing with a nine-digit asking price. Megamansions with price tags over $100 million haven’t exactly been setting the market aflame.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported on a glut of spec mansions in SoCal and even printed the dreaded b-word—as in bubble. Every home wants to be the one, the record-setter, the high achiever, but what happens when no one in your teeny-tiny pool of fabulously wealthy buyers wants to make the hundred-million-dollar leap?

We surveyed the landscape of the 10 priciest properties currently available in the United States and found that the prices of over half of them have had their prices cut in an attempt to goose a high-net-worth buyer into coughing up oodles of cash.

In fact, the most expensive home in the country had its price cut by 20% this week and still managed to come out on top in our tally of the priciest places.

For a full look at what’s available to buyers with limitless funds at their disposal, simply scroll on down …

1. 875 Nimes Rd, Los Angeles, CA

Price: $195,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: This Bel Air mansion tops the list, despite this week’s 20% price cut. Known as the Chartwell Estate, the home of the late Univision CEO Jerry Perenchio made a splashy debut on the public market last November with a prodigious $245 million price tag.

Now $50 million cheaper, the property that served as the setting for “The Beverly Hillbillies” still awaits a buyer with a bottomless bank account. Will the price slice help move a buyer to make a record-breaking move? After all, back in 2017, Mansion Global reported  that the massive 10-acre spread was available for an astronomical $350 million, but only if a buyer inquired. Stay tuned!

(realtor.com)

2. 67 Beverly Park Ct, Beverly Hills, CA

Price: $165,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: Located in the ultra-exclusive gated enclave of Beverly Park, this massive 9-acre compound comes with its own private street. The two-parcel lot holds a 20,000-square-foot main house, a 5,000-square foot guesthouse, and assorted other structures. Known as Villa Firenze, the property has been on the market for over a year with no tweaks to the asking price.

3. 594 S. Mapleton Dr, Los Angeles, CA

Price: $160,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: Formerly Spelling Manor and now marketed simply as “The Manor,” this 56,000-square foot behemoth has lingered on the market for nearly three years . It’s owned by Formula 1 heiress Petra Ecclestone , and the price on the iconic mansion was $200 million back in 2016. A price cut in June 2018 took the price down to $175 million, and another $15 million price slice last month brought it to its current ask.

4. 924 Bel Air Rd, Los Angeles, CA

Price: $150,000,000 Behind the Benjamins:  We sense a running theme! This thoroughly modern Bel-Air mansion known as “Billionaire” has also had to scale back its big-dollar aspirations. Once the most expensive listing in the United States, the 38,000-square-foot home came to market in January 2017 with a massive $250 million price tag. At the time, the listing agent told us, “If you have the money, it’s worth every penny.”

The price was subsequently chopped down to $188 million in April 2018 and then cut to $150 million early this year. Now $100 million cheaper, the place must  really  be worth the big bucks.

5. 2000 S. Ocean Blvd, Manalapan, FL

Price: $137,500,000 Behind the Benjamins: Gemini has had a star-crossed time on the market. It was once the most expensive property in the country, with a list price of $195 million.

It’s since been surpassed by the megamansions of SoCal and had its price cut a couple of times. In early 2017, the price was chopped down to $165 million and reduced even further later that year to the current price. Close to Palm Beach, the 15-acre spread offers both ocean and lake frontage.

6. 2571 Wallingford Dr, Beverly Hills, CA

Price: $135,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: This spectacular spec mansion made its entrance on the market last summer, and the price hasn’t budged since. According to the Wall Street Journal , the home originally on the property was built to resemble Le Petit Trianon, Marie Antoinette’s private château in Versailles. Setting aside the troubling theme of unbridled excess, we do love the mansion’s indoor sports facility , with a sport court, cardio gym, and boxing ring.

7. Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA

Price: $125,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: This oceanfront estate owned by NBCUniversal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer landed on the market in January, and we’re still waiting for a buyer to float in. Designed by legendary architect Charles Gwathmey , the home hopes to break the Los Angeles County sale record set by a $110 million Malibu sale in early 2018.

8. 19 Great Island Rd, Darien, CT

Price: $120,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Clichés aside, this gorgeous island compound was once the second-most expensive home in the entire country. At the time, it was on the market for a whopping $175 million . A year ago, the ask was cut by a whopping 31% to the present price.

9. 14000 Calle Real, Goleta, CA

Price: $110,000,000 Behind the Benjamins: A fairly new entry to the list, this 3,500-acre ranch near Santa Barbara sailed onto the market in late February. Known as El Rancho Tajiguas, the huge swath of acreage comes with two brand-new villas located on opposite ends of the property. For the billionaire on the go, each villa comes with its own helipad.

10. 1341 S. Ocean Blvd, Palm Beach, FL

Price: $109,500,000 Behind the Benjamins: Sitting on a stretch of Palm Beach appropriately dubbed “Billionaires’ Row,” this mansion, known as Pietra Mare, came on the market in October 2018. It’s just a half-mile south of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, and was marketed privately for a year at $105 million before going public with a slightly higher asking price.

Millennials are buying multimillion-dollar homes via TikTok as ‘property porn’ captures the next generation of luxury buyers

A grand house is illuminated at twilight

The days of the open house could be numbered with luxury property buyers snooping inside their next home from the comfort of their couch.

Real estate agents selling multimillion-dollar homes have embraced the TikTok tour trend, giving viewers a sneak peek inside everything from megamansions to penthouse suites. But the videos aren’t just eye candy, they’re attracting sales and getting the next generation of buyers hooked.

It comes amid a slowing down of the U.S. property market . In 2023, Wells Fargo  expects a drop in  new-home sales  (-6.5%),  existing-home sales  (-13.1%), and single-family housing starts (-12%), as well as a 5.5% decline in U.S. home prices. By December 2022, mortgage purchase applications were down over 40% on a year-over-year basis.

But search for #property on TikTok and you’ll be one of the 3 billion viewers who have looked up the content. Even greater is the power of the walk-around, with #housetour getting 10.1 billion views; #realestate has 21.6 billion, while #luxuryhomes gets 3.3 billion.

Both an appetite for escapism and aspiration are driving the trend, said Andres Rivadeneira, a Toronto-based agent who has amassed more than 1 million likes on his property content. When he first began posting videos in 2021 he could “never” have imagined the impact it would have on his business—both in generating interest for properties and sourcing new stock.

He explained: “I had a video which went viral but it was for an apartment which had already sold—you can’t time when things really take off. It had been bought by someone who hadn’t seen the property via TikTok but I was still getting so many messages about it. I was out when a couple approached me who recognized me from TikTok and introduced themselves as the buyers. I told them how much interest I still had and they said if I could find them a good deal, they’d be open to selling.

“So I was like, ‘Game on,’ One of the buyers through TikTok made them an offer and they made a $250,000 profit in less than 30 days. The original buyers never even moved in, they were just in possession of it.”

Rivadeneira added that thanks to TikTok’s global reach, exposure is not only driven by likes, views, comments, and shares, but by producing content which people are “nosy” enough to want to watch.

@andresrivrealtor $3.5M in Little Italy, Toronto #torontorealestate #toronto #housetour #propertytour #torontoluxuryhomes #luxuryhomes ♬ Love You So – The King Khan & BBQ Show

“Luxury property tours are interesting to people either because they want to virtually look through the windows of a place or because they’re in the minority who would maybe buy it. I get a lot of calls about my properties from people living in high-value markets like London, New York, or Australia. The content around: ‘This is how much you can get for your money here versus there’ is really interesting to people, and that drives a lot of engagement,” he added.

How do you make TikTok property videos go viral?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing when it comes to the world of content creation. The reason a video blows up is often clear after it’s been seen millions of times, said Canadian real estate agent Miranda Caldwell; however, if you try to create a viral video it’s less likely to do so.

@meetmiranda Imagine he just left me down there #secretroom #secretstaircase #hiddendoor 👀 spotted in a Toronto home listed by Avryll Mcnair, Bosley Real Estate Ltd., Brokerage ♬ original sound – Patrick Antonian

The sales representative says her style is much more “indirect” than trying to sell the property as she uses the platform more for her own research and personal brand.

Caldwell explained she’s incredibly selective about the homes she tours, even turning down property requests if she feels it doesn’t fit with what her viewers turn to her for.

“To me my platform is mainly about research because I’m so interested in design and what people react to,” she says.

“What’s interesting is that in the luxury market and with a lot of people worrying about a recession, the videos I’m seeing do really well in terms of engagement are the more ‘humble’ properties. Instead of the flashiness, people like homes where you can see the human element as opposed to those houses that people say feel like doctor’s offices.

“I always prioritize the homes that have more charm and history and find that it’s the interactions from videos that don’t go viral which are really worthwhile. For example customers and other luxury agents I’ve met through TikTok tend to connect through comments on videos which haven’t had such a big reaction.”

Jennifer Aniston Gives a Tour of Her $21 Million Dollar Home: 'There's Nowhere Else I Want to Be'

"Sexy is important, but comfort is essential," the actress tells Architectural Digest

Jennifer Aniston ’s decorating mantra is (unsurprisingly) as approachable as they come.

“Sexy is important, but comfort is essential,” the actress, 48, tells Architectural Digest in their March issue.

Aniston reinforces that rule in every room of the sprawling L.A. estate she shares with husband Justin Theroux, 46, and their three dogs through luxe furnishings, like a Jean Royere polar bear sofa, and organic finishes that are both beautiful and welcoming. “I’m all about the cozy,” she says.

She picked up the 1965 property in 2011 for $21 million, and aesthetically, she says, it was “the furthest thing from what I wanted.” Aniston turned to designer and longtime friend Stephen Shadley to create a perfect mix between its original modern look and her “Old World meets New World” decor. But she wasn’t the only person who had a say in the process.

“Justin definitely wanted to be involved, so there was a bit of a learning curve for me on how to include another voice in the design process,” says Aniston, who is starring in the upcoming Indie comedy, Dumplin’ . “For instance, I figured out that immediately saying ‘No!’ to any suggestion is not the most collaborative move.”

Fortunately, the team effort paid off in spades, resulting in spaces layered with Abstract Expressionist paintings, hand-painted wallpaper, silk rugs and more surprises in every nook and cranny. Outside, the grounds — which once held a hillside vineyard — were reimagined to include terraces, pocket gardens and a stunning pool surrounded by a teak deck.

“Every corner you turn, you have an experience. Everywhere you look, you get a vista,” she says. “We worked very hard to get that flow right.”

Even better than relishing the stunning finished product, putting it all together was actually enjoyable for the former Friends star.

“If I wasn’t an actress, I’d want to be a designer. I love the process,” she admits. “There’s something about picking out fabrics and finishes that feeds my soul.”

The house’s greatest success, though, may be turning the formerly peripatetic actress into a homebody.

“There was a time when I thought there was something romantic about picking up and trotting off somewhere different every three months. Now I’m becoming more particular about the projects I take,” she says. “I look around at my husband and my dogs and our home, and there’s nowhere else I want to be.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Drop $200 Million on Most Expensive Home in California History

Beyonc left JayZ right holding hands on stage

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are no strangers to breaking records. Just this year, the songstress, who is currently traveling across Europe on her Renaissance World Tour, claimed the title for most Grammy wins of all time. Now, the power couple can count a groundbreaking real estate record as one of their own, after the purchase of a $200 million Malibu home—the priciest in the history of The Golden State, TMZ reports. The nine-figure transaction shatters Marc Andreessen’s former record in California, set with his $177 million purchase in 2021, also in Malibu.

The married moguls’ new Pacific Coast Highway abode was designed by architect Tadao Ando and measures in at 30,000 square feet, plenty of space for their three children to enjoy. Its seller was art collector Bill Bell Jr., who is also the heir to a soap opera fortune, as the son of the creators of The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful . It reportedly took Bell over a decade and a half to finish construction on the concrete property.

Between their album sales and business endeavors (Jay-Z is the founder of the Roc Nation label; Beyoncé is behind Parkwood Entertainment), the business of being Bey and Jay is a lucrative one, so the purchase shouldn’t ultimately set them back too much. Beyoncé's Renaissance tour could bring in as much as $2 billion , and Jay-Z’s net worth is $2.5 billion —more than enough to cancel out the record-breaking purchase.

Kurt Rappaport of the Westside Estate Agency represented both the buyers and seller. Per his bio on the WEA site, he’s got some practice working with big-name buyers; prior clients include Madonna, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise.

The Evolving Danger of the New Bird Flu

An unusual outbreak of the disease has spread to dairy herds in multiple u.s. states..

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise, and this is “The Daily.”

[MUSIC PLAYING]

The outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through the nation’s poultry farms is the worst in US history. But scientists say it’s now starting to spread into places and species it’s never been before.

Today, my colleague, Emily Anthes, explains.

It’s Monday, April 22.

Emily, welcome back to the show.

Thanks for having me. Happy to be here.

So, Emily, we’ve been talking here on “The Daily” about prices of things and how they’ve gotten so high, mostly in the context of inflation episodes. And one of the items that keeps coming up is eggs. Egg prices were through the roof last year, and we learned it was related to this. Avian flu has been surging in the United States. You’ve been covering this. Tell us what’s happening.

Yes, so I have been covering this virus for the last few years. And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

OK, so bird flu, though, isn’t new. I mean I remember hearing about cases in Asia in the ‘90s. Remind us how it began.

Bird flu refers to a bunch of different viruses that are adapted to spread best in birds. Wild water birds, in particular, are known for carrying these viruses. And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks.

And how are these outbreaks caused?

So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus. But they shed it. So as they’re traveling over a poultry farm maybe, if they happen to go to the bathroom in a pond that the chickens on the farm are using or eat some of the feed that chickens on the farm are eating, they can leave the virus behind.

And the virus can get into chickens. In some cases, it causes mild illness. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza. But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry.

OK, so the virus comes through wild birds, but gets into farms like this, as you’re describing. How have farms traditionally handled outbreaks, when they do happen?

Well, because this threat isn’t new, there is a pretty well-established playbook for containing outbreaks. It’s sometimes known as stamping out. And brutally, what it means is killing the birds. So the virus is so deadly in this highly pathogenic form that it’s sort of destined to kill all the birds on a farm anyway once it gets in. So the response has traditionally been to proactively depopulate or cull all the birds, so it doesn’t have a chance to spread.

So that’s pretty costly for farmers.

It is. Although the US has a program where it will reimburse farmers for their losses. And the way these reimbursements work is they will reimburse farmers only for the birds that are proactively culled, and not for those who die naturally from the virus. And the thinking behind that is it’s a way to incentivize farmers to report outbreaks early.

So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. So we know how to deal with them. But what about now? Tell me about this new strain.

So this new version of the virus, it emerged in 2020.

After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu.

And pretty quickly it became clear that a couple things set it apart.

A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

This virus, for whatever reason, seemed very good at infecting all sorts of wild birds that we don’t normally associate with bird flu.

[BIRD CRYING]

He was kind of stepping, and then falling over, and using its wing to right itself.

Things like eagles and condors and pelicans.

We just lost a parliament of owls in Minneapolis.

Yeah, a couple of high profile nests.

And also in the past, wild birds have not traditionally gotten very sick from this virus. And this version of the virus not only spread widely through the wild bird population, but it proved to be devastating.

The washing up along the East Coast of the country from Scotland down to Suffolk.

We were hearing about mass die-offs of seabirds in Europe by the hundreds and the thousands.

And the bodies of the dead dot the island wherever you look.

Wow. OK. So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. But it’s even more deadly.

Absolutely. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history. So more than 90 million birds in the US have died as a result of this virus.

90 million birds.

Yes, and I should be clear that represents two things. So some of those birds are birds who naturally got infected and died from the virus. But the vast majority of them are birds that were proactively culled. What it adds up to is, is 90 million farmed birds in the US have died since this virus emerged. And it’s not just a chicken problem. Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock.

And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented.

So it’s showing up at Dairy farms now. You’re saying that bird flu has now spread to cows. How did that happen?

So we don’t know exactly how cows were first infected, but most scientists’ best guess is that maybe an infected wild bird that was migrating shed the virus into some cattle feed or a pasture or a pond, and cattle picked it up. The good news is they don’t seem to get nearly as sick as chickens do. They are generally making full recoveries on their own in a couple of weeks.

OK, so no mass culling of cows?

No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow. We don’t know exactly how that’s happening yet. But anytime you see cow-to-cow or mammal-to-mammal transmission, that’s a big concern.

And why is that exactly?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned.

And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there. And that’s what happens when this virus gets into wild animals, vast populations that we can’t control.

We’ll be right back.

So, Emily, you said that another threat was the threat of flu in wild animal populations. Clearly, of course, it’s already in wild birds. Where else has it gone?

Well, the reason it’s become such a threat is because of how widespread it’s become in wild birds. So they keep reintroducing it to wild animal populations pretty much anywhere they go. So we’ve seen the virus repeatedly pop up in all sorts of animals that you might figure would eat a wild bird, so foxes, bobcats, bears. We actually saw it in a polar bear, raccoons. So a lot of carnivores and scavengers.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places.

And most devastatingly, we’ve seen enormous outbreaks in other sorts of marine mammals, especially sea lions and seals.

So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall. My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli and I were talking to some scientists in South America who described to us what they called a scene from hell, of walking out onto a beach in Argentina that is normally crowded with chaotic, living, breathing, breeding, elephant seals — and the beach just being covered by carcass, after carcass, after carcass.

Mostly carcasses of young newborn pups. The virus seemed to have a mortality rate of 95 percent in these elephant seal pups, and they estimated that it might have killed more than 17,000 of the pups that were born last year. So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before.

And why is it so far reaching, Emily? I mean, what explains these mass die-offs?

There are probably a few explanations. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches. These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity.

There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

So basically, this virus is spreading to places it’s never been before, kind of virgin snow territory, where animals just don’t have the immunity against it. And once it gets into a population packed on a beach, say, of elephant seals, it’s just like a knife through butter.

Absolutely. And an even more extreme example of that is what we’re starting to see happen in Antarctica, where there’s never been a bird flu outbreak before until last fall, for the first time, this virus reached the Antarctic mainland. And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before.

And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be. But penguins also, of course, are known for breeding in these large colonies.

Probably. don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins.

Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying.

Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark. They’re talking about the virus spreading through wild animal populations so quickly and so ferociously that they’re calling it an ecological disaster.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. But I think that we should be paying a lot of attention to how this virus is moving through animal populations, how quickly it’s moving through animal populations, and the opportunities that it is giving the virus to evolve into something that poses a much bigger threat to human health.

So the way it’s spreading in wild animals, even in remote places like Antarctica, that’s important to watch, at least in part because there’s a real danger to people here.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions. Scientists are already seeing evidence that the virus is adapting as it passes from marine mammal to marine mammal. And that could turn it into a virus that’s also better at spreading between people.

And if somebody walks out onto a beach and touches a dead sea lion, if their dog starts playing with a sea lion carcass, you could imagine that this virus could make its way out of marine mammals and into the human population. And if it’s this mammalian adapted version of the virus that makes its way out, that could be a bigger threat to human health.

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people.

Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now.

Right. I like that, a specialist in mammals. So what can we do to contain this virus?

Well, scientists are exploring new options. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether we should start vaccinating chickens in the US. The government, USDA labs, have been testing some poultry vaccines. It’s probably scientifically feasible. There are challenges there, both in terms of logistics — just how would you go about vaccinating billions of chickens every year. There are also trade questions. Traditionally, a lot of countries have not been willing to accept poultry products from countries that vaccinate their poultry.

And there’s concern about whether the virus might spread undetected in flocks that are vaccinated. So as we saw with COVID, the vaccine can sometimes stop you from getting sick, but it doesn’t necessarily stop infection. And so countries are worried they might unknowingly import products that are harboring the virus.

And what about among wild animals? I mean, how do you even begin to get your head around that?

Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus.

So, Emily, we started this conversation with a kind of curiosity that “The Daily” had about the price of eggs. And then you explained the bird flu to us. And then somehow we ended up learning about an ecological disaster that’s unfolding all around us, and potentially the source of the next human pandemic. That is pretty scary.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. But this is why scientists are concerned and why they think it’s really important to keep a very close eye on what’s happening both on farms and off farms, as this virus spreads through all sorts of animal populations.

One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

We just don’t entirely know how this is going to play out. Flu is a very difficult, wily foe. And so that’s one reason scientists are trying to keep such a close, attentive eye on what’s happening.

Emily, thank you.

Thanks for having me.

On Saturday, in four back-to-back votes, the House voted resoundingly to approve a long-stalled package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and other American allies, delivering a major victory to President Biden, who made aid to Ukraine one of his top priorities.

On this vote, the yeas are 385, and the no’s are 34 with one answering present. The bill is passed without objection.

The House passed the component parts of the $95 billion package, which included a bill that could result in a nationwide ban of TikTok.

On this vote, the yeas are 311 and the nays are 112. The bill is passed.

Oh, one voting present. I missed it, but thank you.

In a remarkable breach of custom, Democrats stepped in to supply the crucial votes to push the legislation past hard-line Republican opposition and bring it to the floor.

The House will be in order.

The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as Tuesday.
