Bliss N Eso (formed in 2000) is a popular Australian hip hop trio best known for their chart-topping albums “Running on Air” and “Circus in the Sky”, hailing from Sydney, Australia.

Comprised of school friends Jonathan Motley (MC Bliss), Max MacKinnon (MC Eso), and Tarik Ejjamai (DJ Izm), Bliss N Eso was originally formed as Bliss N Esoterikizm in 2000. Upon forming, the group released their debut EP “The Arrival”, followed shortly afterwards by a promotional mixtape. Bliss N Eso subsequently honed their live performance skills playing around the Sydney area and trying to court labels to secure future releases. In 2004, after signing with Obese Records, the group issued their debut full-length “Flowers in the Pavement”. The record earned Bliss N Eso an Artist of the Year nomination at the 2004 Music Oz Awards and a supporting slot opening for 50 Cent on his “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” tour.

The trio subsequently switched labels to Illusive Sounds ahead of their sophomore release, “Day of the Dog”, which arrived in March 2006. The album marked Bliss N Eso first forays into the Australian charts and saw “Day of the Dog” rise to No. 45, aided by the singles “Up Jumped the Boogie” and “Party at My Place” featuring Motley. This generated the group considerable momentum moving forward and led to the release of their third studio album, “Flying Colours”, in April 2008. Charting at No. 10 on the Australian Albums Chart, “Flying Colours”, features the 20-strong African Zulu Choir, The Zulu Connections, as well as Debaser, Hyjack, and Phrase.

In 2010 Bliss N Eso enjoyed their greatest success to date with their No. 1 album “Running on Air”. Released in July 2010, the platinum selling album earned a string of positive reviews and spawned the singles “Addicted”, “Down by the River”, and “Reflections”. The band were able to match this success on their subsequent 2013 album, “Circus in the Sky”, which also found the top spot on the Australian Albums Chart. Aided by the single “House of Deams”, “Home Is Where The Heart Is”, and Reservoir Dogs”, the album features the likes of Nas, Seth Sentry and transformed Bliss N Eso into a household name.

Live reviews

You usually don't expect to see a piano or violins featured center stage at a hip hop concert but that's just one thing that separates Bliss N Eso from more traditional acts. Unconventional as it may seem, the shows are quite enjoyable and are unlike anything you might have seen before.

The lyrics are at least on par with other hip hop artists as the rappers work together quite well to build vocal melodies. The Australian group consists of only three actual members but are often accompanied by other musicians ranging anywhere from the aforementioned piano or violin to rock guitars and singers. This mix of several different genres gives the music a unique taste that nevertheless feels familiar enough to be approachable and somehow never loses its core focus of rap and hip hop.

The performance is at times lower key and at times more pronounced than is typical of the hip hop scene. When the piano or other instruments are playing and the lights are down, there is a more serene sense and the crowd responds with the modern equivalent of holding their lighters in the air, holding up their smartphones. But when the chorus is reached and the music fades and the rap turns hard core, the phones disappear and the dark stage is lit up by a pyrotechnics and light show usually more at home during a rock anthem.

A bit disappointed, i just felt the set of songs wasn't right, they should have played more the tracks that have a greater depth and meaning. The group it self just seemed to be going through the motions. Glad i went however wasn't particularly wowed by the night. 6/10.

Bliss N Eso expand 15th anniversary tour for Flying Colours

The Australian hip hop trio will celebrate their third album with shows around the country this October.

Update:  Following hectic demand in the ticket pre-sale,  Bliss N Eso  have confirmed there'll be second dates added to Melbourne and Sydney for the upcoming tour. Check out all the dates and details further below. 

Original Story:  Released in 2008, Flying Colours was the record that truly put Bliss N Eso on the map. It was their first Top 10 Album Chart entry, won the ARIA Award for Best Urban Release, and later became only the second Australian hip hop album to be certified Gold.

Tracks like 'The Sea Is Rising', 'Eye of the Storm' and 'Woodstock 2008' were all over triple j at the time, and made it into the Hottest 100 of 2008.

It was a critical and commercial game-changer for Bliss N Eso, so it only make sense that the group are commemorating its 15th birthday with a limited edition vinyl pressing and an anniversary tour through capital cities around the nation.

Jonathan 'MC Bliss' Notley is "pumped" to be hitting the road later this year, saying in a statement:

"We are blessed to have had such an amazing career that is still as strong as ever and Flying Colours was truely [sic] such a pivotal point in our trajectory.

"Even when I play it today I can really hear that monumental shift in our sound and growth as artists. It's rare these days that a body of work stands the test of time and still means so much to so many people. Even more than winning our first ARIA award with this album, it was the deep connection with our fans this album created that really spawned the fanbase we have today and that's what means the most."

Flying Colours is also being pressed onto vinyl for the first time, "the icing on the cake" Notley notes. It's available in transparent red and gold and per-order will be available from Thursday 20 July.

Coming off the back of two huge 2022 tours, Bliss N Eso will perform Flying Colours in full - along with their big hits - at stops in Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, Brisbane.

"There's so many bangers on this record that are constantly requested but we rarely get to play live, so to break these bad boys out for the first time in years and let 'em rip all together is going to be INSANE."

Bliss N Eso announce rescheduled Queensland dates for ‘The Sun’ tour

The four shows will now be spread out across June and July

Bliss N Eso have made another change to the itinerary on their current national tour , pushing back four shows across Queensland.

Initially meant to commence at the end of January as part of the 33-date run (which began last month), Bliss N Eso were forced to axe four dates in QLD due to several positive COVID-19 cases in their touring party. The affected QLD shows will now kick off in Townsville on Friday June 24. All new dates can be found below.

Previously, the NSW stretch of Bliss N Eso’s ‘The Sun’ tour was also rescheduled, grouped together into its own leg. Starting in Byron Bay on Thursday April 21, the hip-hop trio will then pass through Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Penrith, Dubbo, Bathurst, Port Macquarie and Newcastle. Shows previously locked in for Albury, Sydney and Moruya remain unaffected.

Butchulla rapper Birdz will support Bliss N Eso on all but three of the NSW dates, with Polynesian hip-hopper MLBRN opening things up in Lismore. Brisbane MC Nerve will step in for the shows in Port Macquarie, Newcastle and all upcoming QLD shows.

All tickets for the original QLD and NSW dates will remain valid for the new shows. Those no longer able to attend will need to submit refund requests by Tuesday, March 1, while remaining tickets are available to purchase from the Frontier Touring website .

The extended COVID-19 restrictions in NSW place roadblocks on entertainment venues hoping to operate at full capacity, as well as bans on singing and dancing. As it stands, the restrictions are expected to be in place until the end of February.

Bliss N Eso released their seventh album, ‘The Sun’, last August via Flight Deck / Mushroom. It spawned a litany of singles, including ‘Lighthouse’ , ‘Send It’ , ‘Good People’ , ‘OG’s’ , ‘On One’ and ‘Tell The World That I’m Coming’ . The record also sports a stacked bill of featured artists, such as Chillinit , Dizzee Rascal and Kasey Chambers .

Illusive Presents  and  Frontier Touring  are pumped to announce a national Australian tour for one of the country’s finest hip hop acts,  Bliss n Eso . The ‘Send It Tour’ will see the group bring their infectious energy and unmatchable flow to audiences in Sydney, Adelaide, Fremantle, Brisbane and Melbourne throughout June/July 2021. 

The ‘Send It Tour’ kicks off Friday 25 June at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, then heading to Thebarton Theatre Adelaide on Thursday 1 July, Metropolis Fremantle on Saturday 3 July and Eatons Hill Hotel Brisbane on Saturday 10 July, before wrapping up with two Melbourne shows at 170 Russell on Thursday 22 July and Friday 23 July.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂
