with a cruise advisor

Carnival Dream features the Punchliner Comedy Club, nightly stage shows, age-appropriate kids clubs (for ages 2 to 17) and an onboard water park – all hallmarks of the line's "Fun Ships." Travelers report enjoying the nightly entertainment on board.

Those more interested in relaxing can enjoy the Cloud 9 Spa and the adults-only Serenity Retreat. In terms of lodging, cruisers can stay in budget-friendly Interior staterooms or splurge for more room in an Ocean View or Balcony stateroom (or a Suite). All cabins are appointed with flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service.

During a 2017 revamp, the ship added dining options like Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina and Bonsai Sushi. Overall, the food quality on the ship gets mixed reviews. Carnival Dream carries 3,646 passengers and offers a nearly 4-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio, so public areas may be crowded and service can slow at peak times. Recent travelers also warned against choosing a room directly above any of the restaurants or bars, as noise travels easily through the walls.

Carnival Dream sails from  Galveston  to destinations throughout the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.

Carnival Dream - Interior Common Areas

The ship has many lovely, special public rooms. Filled with reds and golds, the Carnival Dream features expensive Murano glass, wood veneers, and custom made tiles. The estimated cost of the ship was $860 million, and it looks it. The ship's soaring atrium is one of Carnival's largest, and anyone who comes onto the ship for the first time is impressed by the exciting atmosphere it creates. Many Carnival Dream guests love the Ocean Plaza, a hub with day and night entertainment, coffee bar, and a full bar.

Carnival Dream - Lounges and Bars

Carnival prides itself on its "fun ships," and the Carnival Dream has several lounges, all featuring live or musical entertainment sure to keep everyone laughing and having fun. Burgundy is a 425-seat comedy club that features a wide variety of comedians, offering both family-friendly and adults-only performances each night. Each 7-day cruise has 24 comedy performances. For those who love to be in on the action, the Caliente Dance Club has a large dance floor and modern decor. Or, music lovers can enjoy The Song for karaoke or Sam's Piano Bar for their favorite tunes. The largest lounge on board is Encore!. Each week, guests are treated to three spectacular reviews, with singers, dancers, and the Fun Force acrobats.

Carnival Dream - Exterior Common Areas

Carnival cruisers love outdoor deck areas, and the Carnival Dream was designed with lots of public space outside for both kids and adults. I love the half-mile promenade that laps the ship on deck 5. It's a great place to walk, sit, or enjoy the whirlpools that extend over the sea. All adults can enjoy Serenity , the adults-only retreat forward on decks 14 and 15. It has its own bar, a tranquil atmosphere, and very comfortable seating. Kids (and some adults) want to spend all their time at WaterWorks , which features some spine-tingling water slides and wet fun for everyone. Other outdoor activities include an 18-hole miniature golf course and basketball and volleyball courts. Carnival Dream has two outdoor pools and several whirlpools.

Carnival Dream - Camp Carnival for Kids 11 and Under

Camp Carnival on deck 11 is divided into three sections, each for a different age group. The first area (ages 2 to 5) features an arts and crafts center and a variety of age-appropriate toys and games. The second area, aimed for ages 6 to 8, offers video game consoles such as PlayStation 2 and Wii. The third (ages 9 to 11) includes a karaoke machine, air hockey and foosball tables, and PlayStation 2 and Wii video game consoles. A reception desk provides parents with a convenient venue to check their kids into and out of the program. There's also a guard who keeps an eye on the entrance when the facility is open. The activities planned for the kids are fun, but also include an educational element related to the ship's Caribbean itineraries.

Carnival Dream - Circle C for Kids 12 to 14

Circle C is found on deck 4 and focuses on the tweens ages 12 to 14. This is a fun place, with dance floor, DJ, video jukebox, and Internet workstations. The room is 1,075 square feet, and kids love the modern design and hip furniture. Circle C has a dedicated director who oversees the tweens' activities, including late-night movies, video game contests, and pool parties.

Carnival Dream - Club O2 for Teens 15 to 17

The Club O2 Teen Club is adjacent to Circle C. It is a 2,740-square-foot club where teens can network and dance to all the latest hits. Designed as a place for teens to chill, the room includes a dance floor, soda bar, music-listening stations, and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Like Circle C, the Club O2 programs have a dedicated director who oversees the activities. Next to Club O2 is The Warehouse, an expansive game room featuring the latest video and arcade games. Teens can also enjoy the Carnival Dream's Y-Spa youth spa program, which offers a variety of soothing treatments.

Carnival Dream - FunHub

Kids and adults alike will be impressed by the FunHub, a comprehensive shipboard intranet portal that includes an onboard social network, along with access to a wide variety of information on the ship's services, facilities, daily activities, weather, and next port of call. The FunHub is accessible via 36 computer stations located on decks 3, 4, and 5. These stations provide guests with free and convenient access to the Carnival Dream intranet and social network on a 24/7 basis. Guests who have their own laptops along or who rent a netbook on the ship can access the sites anywhere on the ship.

Carnival Dream - Cabins and Accommodations - Cove Balcony Cabin

The Carnival Dream offers all the standard type of accommodations , including interior cabins, oceanview cabins, balcony cabins, suites, and penthouse suites. These cabins have plenty of storage space and offer all the standard amenities. In addition, the Carnival Dream introduces two innovative types of staterooms. The first cabins are the "cove" balcony staterooms on deck 2, much closer to the water than traditional balcony cabins. The open area of the balcony is smaller and can be closed with a hatch if the weather is very bad. Although the opening is smaller, the balcony is more private and still allows marvelous views. The cove balcony cabin interior is the same layout and size as a standard balcony cabin.

Carnival Dream - Cabins and Accommodations - Family Quint Oceanview Cabin

The second type of new stateroom is the "family quint," which sleeps five. In addition to twin beds that convert to king-sized, the cabin has two bunk beds and a sofa bed. What's interesting about these 193 oceanview staterooms is the bathroom configuration. Like the family cabins on the Disney Cruise Line ships, the Carnival Dream family quint cabins have two baths. One is a full bathroom (sink, toilet, shower), and the second bath has a junior tub, shower, and sink. I think this layout is better than Disney's, which has a sink and toilet in one bath and a tub/shower and sink in the second. The Carnival Dream also features 65 spa staterooms and suites, which are located near the Cloud 9 Spa and have extra amenities/privileges.

Carnival Dream - Dining and Cuisine - The Lido Restaurant

The food flavors and variety of cuisines offered at the Lido Restaurant  are very good to excellent. This buffet features stations serving diverse cuisine like the Mongolian Wok , salad bar, chef's choice, and deli. Pizza and ice cream are available 24/7.

Carnival Dream - Dining - Main Dining Rooms

The two main dining rooms on the Carnival have a red theme and are appropriately named "Crimson" and "Scarlet." They feature two traditional seatings at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. as well as "Your Time" dining from 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Scarlet Restaurant is also open for breakfast and lunch with open seating.

Carnival Dream - Summary

The Carnival Dream is a great addition to the Carnival fleet and a good value for cruise travelers. Family groups, couples, and singles who love big ships with lots of activities, excellent entertainment, and good, diverse cuisine will love the Carnival Dream. After all, it's a "fun" ship!

Highlights also include the adults-only, outdoor two-level Serenity area for a delightful retreat where you can melt your cares away. Start the day with a dip in the Thalassotherapy pool followed by a massage at the Cloud 9 Spa that will leave you feeling new and rejuvenated. Find a favorite souvenir at the boutiques and browse the duty-free shops. Thrills galore away at the WaterWorks aqua park with an exhilarating four-deck spiral slide.

Family-friendly throughout, Carnival Dream offers Camp Ocean, where kids ages 2 to 11 are kept busy with lots of fun ocean-themed activities and entertainment designed just for them according to age. "Seuss at Sea" and the character parade will give ear to ear smiles.

Bring your appetite because out-of-this-world cuisine is served on Carnival Dream, which boasts a myriad of fabulous dining choices , including casual, formal and al fresco options. International dishes and American favorites are served at the two-level main dining rooms, Crimson and Scarlet, where you can dine in beautiful settings. Head to the popular Lido restaurant called The Gathering, which features pizza, burrito and pasta stations, a New York-style deli, Indian Tandoor, Mongolian Wok and more. Classic steakhouse fare is offered at The Chef's Art and savory delicious sushi is offered at Wasabi. Convenient room service is also available 24/7.

Make yourself at home in spacious and comfortable accommodations — many with ocean views and balconies. Special "cove balcony" staterooms offer "up-close" sea views and more interior space. Guests in Cloud 9 Spa staterooms and suites have additional in-room, spa-related amenities, as well as a soothing and relaxing spa theme.

Enjoy conversation and your favorite drink with friends at various fun lounges and watering holes, such as the popular RedFrog Rum Bar, where you can try Carnival's very own ThristyFrog Red Beer. Other chic venues include the always popular BlueIguana Tequila Bar and Sam's Piano Bar where you can hear your favorite tunes. Dance at the popular Liquid Nightclub and watch a show at Ovation, the main lounge. Try your luck at the aptly named Jackpot Casino. You will be dancing in your seat at Playlist Productions and watch a movie outdoors at the huge screen at the Carnival Seaside Theater. Sing your heart out at The Song Karaoke bar and settle in for a delightful night under the stars at Dive-in Movies where blockbuster films are shown on an immense poolside screen. Let your dreams come true on the Carnival Dream.

Pizzeria Del Capitano

Pizzeria Del Capitano

On Carnival ships, the captain tends to be kind of a big deal — almost a celebrity. On a few select ships, they’ve even got their own pizza kitchen. The best part? Pizzeria del Capitano is open to everyone, 24 hours a day! And since our captains tend to be Italian, you know the quality of the ingredients truly pass muster. (Sorry, nautical pun.) Hand-tossed dough, made from imported Italian flour, plus fresh mozzarella form a solid base, and a choice of toppings put the finishing touches on this piping hot, fresh-from-the-oven mealtime — or anytime — classic. Chow down on some delicious Asian goodness. First, select your noodles and veggies. Then tell one of our chefs which sauce and meat you want in the wok. Will it be mussels and Szechuan? Blue Iguana Cantina

Nobody knows Mexican dining like a blue iguana. Well, our blue iguana, at least. That’s why it should come as no surprise that the BlueIguana Cantina features freshly made tacos and burritos stuffed specially for your enjoyment. Throw our homemade tortillas and salsa into the mix, and you have a casual dining experience that will make you say “mmmm” (which is actually Iguanese for “more, please”).

Guys Burger Joint

Guys Burger Joint

We went looking for someone to help us grill up the best burgers at sea, and we found just the guy. Carnival has teamed up with best-selling author, restaurateur and Food Network personality Guy Fieri to bring all the authentic appeal of a roadside burger shack to Guy’s Burger Joint, the cool poolside spot for hot burgers and hand-cut fries. Try a fresh-off-the-grill burger Guy’s way, or take it off-road to our toppings bar and truly make it your own.

Massages, facials, body wraps, thermal suites and more — plus, on certain ships, the amazing Thalassotherapy Pool — these are the tools of the trade. And the trade is ultimate relaxation.

Salon

A trip to the salon is an opportunity to relax, to chat with others, to focus on yourself. It’s about more than just getting your hair or nails done… but it’s definitely about getting your hair or nails done! Even though you’re on vacation, you won’t have to settle for anything less than the salon style you’re used to back on land. And these good looks go beyond the usual — we even offer services like teeth whitening… great for taking those ‘I’m on vacation and I’m looking great!’ smiles to the next level.

Jogging Track

Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck. Jogging tracks are available on all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort.

Blue Iguana Tequila bar

BlueIguana Tequila Bar is the onboard spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza. The menu offers up Mexican favorites, including several brands of tequila and a slew of Mexican brews. There’s a lineup of frozen concoctions, cocktails and margaritas served by the glass or by the pitcher, and even a special Mexican beer cocktail (yes, really). Where can you find this little slice of Mexican paradise? Next to the pool, of course. So stay cool and take in the bar’s vacation vibe while you kick back on your cruise – that’s what official bar mascot Blue the Iguana would tell you.

Redfrog Rum Bar

Redfrog Rum Bar

Guests have told us we hit on something special with the cool Caribbean chill of the RedFrog Pub. We've taken the best parts and brought them poolside with the RedFrog Rum Bar, where the frog keeps the fun hopping day and night with all the island flava you know and love. Join the party at this poolside bar featuring a great selection of frog-approved Caribbean rum-based concoctions available by the glass or pitcher, plus plenty of Carnival’s signature private-label draft beer, ThirstyFrog Red.

carnival dream cruise pictures

Since photos are a big part of how you and your crew will remember your cruise, you can rely on Carnival’s photo-pros to bring your fun side into focus — lighting and background, shutter speed and aperture know-how goes into every shot they take. You’ll find our pros all over the ship: when you’re gathered around the dining room table, as you step off the ship at your destination… and plenty of times in between. You’ll even find creative and fun backdrops around the ship that you can casually stop by and do a quick pose in front of! Savings tip: rather than buying individual photos, you should check out our Pixels photo packages — these get you more shots for less!

The Carnival cruise ship Dream has a total of 35 wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) and 61 Cloud 9 Spa cabins (of them 20 Inside, 4 Oceanview, 35 Balcony, 4 Suite). The number of all cabin categories is 34.

Connecting rooms ("family cabins") are located on decks 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. The list of connecting cabins grades includes 2 beds (4E, 8P), 3 beds (PT, 6L), 3 beds (6A), 2-3 beds (8B, 8E, 8D), 2-4 beds (8A, 8F), and 2-3-4 beds (6M, 7C). Handicap staterooms (35 total) are in categories OS-Ocean Suie (1), Balcony (2), Oceanview (13), Interior (15) and Small Interior (4).

Follows the review of Carnival Dream staterooms as amenities, furniture, and complimentary services:

Carnival Dream Suites (Grand, Ocean, Cloud 9 Spa) have 2 twin beds (convertible to king), dressing area (walk-in closet, vanity table, chair), private bathroom (WC, shower, bathtub, bidet, double sinks). Some GS-OS suites have a single/double sofa bed for 3rd/4th person. All balcony accommodations feature a private balcony with sliding glass doors (table, patio chairs, rail with clear glass panel).

All Carnival Cloud 9 Spa cabins have exclusive access to the Spa facilities on Panorama Deck 11. Their grades are Spa Suite (SS), Spa Balcony (8S, 8P), Spa Oceanview (6S) and Spa Inside (4S). Carnival Cloud 9 Spa rooms have the following complimentary amenities, services and perks (applicable for two guests per stateroom only): Thermal Suite and Thalassotherapy Pool (complimentary, unlimited access), 2 fitness classes (complimentary, Yoga or Pilates), 2 metabolism tests (complimentary), 1 Scrub Kit (complimentary, for the Thermal Suite), bathrobes, slippers, deluxe in-room bath amenities (by Elemis – shampoo, conditioner, sharp shower gel, vitamin-rich body lotion, 1 hand and 1 body soap disks), priority Spa reservations (must be made by 6 pm on embarkation day). Passengers booked in Cloud 9 Spa cabins also enjoy Spa treatment discounts while the ship is docked in ports of call – 20% off (1st), 30% off (2nd) and 40% off (3rd treatment).

Premium Vista Balcony cabins are located around the ship’s aft corners and have same suite amenities (incl a wrap-around balcony). Extended Balcony cabins are in 2 grades – 8N and 8M (both with aft ship location). These staterooms have 50% larger balconies, 3 closets (in all grades balcony rooms), full bathroom (shower). Cove Balcony cabins feature floor-ceiling window doors leading to a private cove (partially enclosed) veranda.

Oceanview cabins have a picture window and twin beds don’t convert to king when both upper beds are in use. Some have a sofa and/or upper beds (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Spa Oceanview rooms are with obstructed views, and some are with upper bed (Pullman) for 4th person.

Inside cabins with windows have either Porthole Window (PT, on decks 1 and 2) or Picture Window (4J, on decks 6, 7, 9 and 10-Lido). Some Porthole cabins have a sofa bed for a 3rd person, some Picture Window rooms have a sofa and/or upper bed (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Small Inside cabins have bunk beds (upper/lower Pullman beds), living area (vanity, chair), bathroom (shower).

All Carnival Dream staterooms offer as standard/complimentary amenities a living area (vanity, seating), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies, bookings-reservations, Room Service ordering), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single sink-vanity, bathrobes, bathroom amenity basket/replenished upon request), custom-made beds (Carnival Comfort Bed System), beach towels, mini-bar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, complimentary 24-hour room service. Bibles (Gideon version) are provided upon request.

The Carnival’s Sail & Sign card (cashless onboard credit account) doubles as stateroom key. The S&S credit program allows charges on purchases and tips/gratuities directly to a personal account throughout the Carnival cruise. The card has a designated owner and must be utilized for all money transactions on the ship as cash is accepted as a form of payment only at the casino. These cards are provided to all passengers (incl minors) immediately upon boarding the ship. Balance updates are provided at Guest Services desk (at any time). They can also be checked via the smart TV in each stateroom.

Depending on satellite reception (Carnival Dream location at sea), the complimentary in-cabin TV programming includes the following channels: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN (Domestic, International, Espanol), TCM (classic movies), cartoons (Boomerang, CN), TNT, TBS. There are 2 complimentary movie channels showing a film every 3 hours (both starting at 12 noon). One shows all-time favorites (PG -13 rated) and the other shows all-time family favorites (G / PG-rated). The following TV channels are Carnival-themed and also complimentary: Fun Finds TV, Cruise Director, Fun Aboard, Park West Art, Shore Tours, Ship Position, live cam views (webcams positioned forward and on lido deck), Audible Funtimes, Photo, Music. Sporting events (ESPN, ESPN 2) are shown only on big screens – at the ship’s Sports Bar and Seaside Theatre (not in cabins/suites). All the TV’s connection ports are intentionally disabled, which makes it impossible to connect it with personal devices (cameras, DVDs, USBs, iPods, gaming consoles, etc).

Bathroom amenities vary each time, so it’s advisable you bring your own. Samples may include toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, body lotion, razor, antiacids. There is a wall-mounted dispenser in the shower stall (for liquid soap and shampoo). Electric power outlets are located in the desk/vanity area – one 110 V outlet (3-pronged, USA grounded) and one 220 V outlet (European standard). The bathroom’s 2-pin plug can be used only for electric razors.

The new Carnival beds are Europe-manufactured exclusively for the company. The ensemble includes custom pillows (trademarked “New Generation Pillows”, 100% cotton), duvet (100% hypoallergenic, ultra-fine, satin-striped), cover, deluxe sheets (high-quality cotton), pillowcases (ultra-fine, satin-striped), 8-inch / 20 cm spring mattresses (trademarked “Carnival Comfort”). Alternative (non-allergenic) bedding is also available. It includes 100% polyester blankets, sheets and pillowcases (60/40 cotton-polyester) and New Generation Pillows (100% cotton). Note: Trundle beds don’t have Carnival Comfort mattresses.

Carnival-logoed Beach Towels are provided in each cruise accommodation for passengers to take ashore. Beach towels are also available for purchasing (at $22). Bathrobes (2) are provided in all cruise suites and also in “Cloud 9 Spa” cabins/suites. Additional bathrobes are provided upon request. For all other cruise accommodations, bathrobes are provided (upon request) during the turndown service on the first evening. Bathrobes can be purchased at $49 (adult size) and $24 (children sizes /2-4 yo and 6-8 yo).

Life jackets are used in cases of emergency only (not at the ship pools). Lifejackets are located within passenger/crew cabins (in the closet). They are available in 3 sizes - adult, child, and infant. Each of the cabins has a safe (located in the closet) with approx dimensions (inches/centimeters) – width (10/25), height (9/23) and depth (8/20). Cabin safes can be accessed by any magnetic strip card. It is advisable not to use a valid credit card (or driver’s license), but an old expired card (or some rewards card) instead. Some safes are with a keypad (personal code). Safes can be opened also by the ship’s security.

All cabin and suite mini-bars are stocked with premium liquors ($6-9,25), beer ($6,25), energy drinks ($5), soft soda/beverages ($2), bottled water ($3,75). In-cabin babysitting is not available (read more at Camp Ocean below). Cribs in cruise cabins are provided complimentary (upon request). In Main Dining Rooms are provided complimentary high chairs and booster seats.

Laundry facilities are at extra-charge – $3,25 (per washer or dryer load) and $1,5 per box (detergent/water softener, dispensed from the vending machine in the room). All laundry machines are coinless (can be operated using S&S cards only). While the ship is in port, washing machines are closed (only dryers and irons can be used). Valet laundry service is handled through the cabin steward. Prices are per item – wash-and-press ($2 – $7,50) and dry-cleaning ($3 – $10,50).

Current Carnival Dream gratuities (per day per person) are USD 12,95 (for standard cabin passengers) and USD 13,95 for suite passengers. The list of perks for all suites includes: priority embarkation/debarkation/tendering (all ports), priority main dining room reservations, complimentary bottled water in cabins, a complimentary bag of laundry (one per cruise), enhanced turndown service.

Since 2017, Carnival Cruise Line offers a new program allowing ship passengers to customize their steward service by choosing to have the cabin serviced in the morning, at night or both (twice a day). Why I Loved My Cruise Through New England And Canada

A fter my first cruise in 2002, I was hooked. I began cruising whenever I could afford it and could take time away from work. I studied cruises — the costs, ports of call, different cruise lines, amenities, and so forth. I longed to do the New England and Canada cruise, but the price was steeper than the cruises I typically took. Finally, in 2019, I took this dream cruise with Holland America.

I flew into Montreal , where I embarked on a 7-day cruise to Boston . Here is what I loved about my voyage through the beautiful regions of Canada and New England.

I was hosted by Holland America on a familiarization trip for this cruise itinerary. Opinions and reviews are entirely mine and unbiased.

Checking Off A Canada And New England Cruise

If you desire to see some of the greatest cities in New England and the gorgeous places around Nova Scotia and its neighboring provinces, this is the cruise for you. It is chock full of history, beautiful scenery, unique attractions, and delicious food. I like to call this one a “smart people’s cruise” because you will come out ready to answer Jeopardy questions after going to wondrous, historic ports of call that the Canada and New England itinerary offers.

While my Holland America Canada and New England cruise was 7 days, I would suggest 10+ days to add more ports like Newfoundland and Saguenay , Quebec. The region is so rich with culture and fun that you won’t be ready to leave in only 7 days. I sure wasn’t.

Montreal’s Cultural Windfall

My cruise started in Montreal. I arrived a day early to ensure no flight interruptions, so I had a day and a half before boarding my cruise, giving me time to see the metropolitan city. My friend Angie and I ate Swiss and mushroom crepes from Chez Suzette (the best I’ve ever had), shopped in boutiques and from vendor stalls around town, and visited the prestigious Notre Dame Basilica. We strolled along the Saint Lawrence River, toured the gardens, and watched a historical reenactment at Chateau Ramezay , a National Historic Site of Canada.

Simply walking through Old Montreal and checking out the 17th, 18th, and 19th-century architecture was enough to keep us busy for hours. There are dozens of galleries and museums to see, too.

Pop into the three-story Bier Markt for dinner, perfect for tasty nibbles like classic poutine, charcuterie boards, and beer cheese dip with pretzels. Oh, and they have really great beer.

Pro Tip: For a sweet treat in the most adorable shop ever, pop into Le Petit Dep .

Enchanting Quebec City

In Quebec City , prepare to be wowed, but even more so in Old Quebec City. Expect picture-perfect architecture, brilliant murals, beds of blooming flowers that look too pretty to be real, appealing shops, and drool-worthy cafes. Take the Old Quebec Funicular from the Dufferin Terrace (your place for buying souvenirs), which is a traditional offering, then go for indulgent afternoon tea at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac , more commonly known as Château Frontenac.

I never miss visiting a Fairmont Hotel in Canada as the afternoon tea is sinfully enjoyable, namely the gourmet tower of sandwiches, scones, and pastries. This one was no less impressive. The price was a little higher than the others I’ve been to, but the tea itself was on a much larger scale, too. I encourage the splurge on this activity.

Again, take time to soak up the architecture around Quebec City. The Old Fortified City was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for reasons apparent in nearly everything you lay your eyes on.

Anne Of Green Gables

Prince Edward Island was one of our favorite stops. Angie is nuts about Anne of Green Gables , so a museum tour was on our agenda. We went to Silver Bush , the lovely Campbell Homestead and Anne of Green Gables Museum, which is filled with family treasures. The property includes a barn and lake, all in the pristine, picturesque countryside. Lucy Maud Montgomery’s niece was a tour guide at the house and will sign books if you wish. Lunch was included with our excursion.

We then made a stop at Confederation Bridge, which links Prince Edward Island to the mainland of New Brunswick and takes 10 minutes to drive. The 820-foot bridge fee will set you back $50.25 for a commercial vehicle to cross. I loved the Port Borden Front Range Lighthouse, sitting in a stately fashion on the banks by the bridge.

Unique Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is intriguing. We appreciated our stops at the ports of Sydney, where we did a walking tour of historic churches and Jost House, then breezed through Old Town and Halifax. In Sydney, my favorite thing was the incredible and big gourmet cinnamon rolls and decadent coffee from Selkie’s Neighborhood Diner and Doktor Luke’s , both at the same address. Sydney has colorful murals, too.

We did a half-day excursion in Halifax to visit the iconic Peggy’s Cove fishing village and Instagram-worthy lighthouse. It is a bit of a drive to get there, but I had to see the site of the most iconic photo of Nova Scotia. It was worth it, fog and all. Our tour included a panoramic drive through Halifax to see its old buildings and National Historic Sites. A second big stop on the excursion was Fairview Lawn Cemetery , hallowed ground and the final resting place for 100+ passengers from the sunken Titanic .

Angie and I made time in the morning to go to Halifax Public Gardens before our excursion. This free attraction is for you if you are into flowers, trees, and natural landscapes. We loved it!

Note: The Titanic cemetery requires a lot of walking and has some steep hills. If you combine this with Peggy’s Cove as an excursion, you can sit on the bus if you don’t think you can walk to the historic site.

Impressive Maine

In Maine, Angie and I rented a car in Bar Harbor and hit the roads on our own. We wanted to see Acadia National Park , one of the top 10 most visited national parks in the U.S., and also the extravagant and affluent neighborhoods of Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor, and Ellsworth. Of course, eating a local lobster roll was most definitely in the cards. You’ll have no hard time finding a fresh seafood restaurant every few miles in this area. We chose Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound and had amazing lobster rolls, coleslaw, and tea.

Pro Tip: Bar Harbor is the most adorable, walkable town on the whole cruise itinerary. You could easily skip taking an excursion and hang out here all day. Don’t miss blueberry ice cream from CJ’s Big Dipper.

Holland America’s Zaandam : Our Floating Paradise

Holland America’s Zaandam was an excellent ship to spend the week on, especially as it only had 1,432 passengers. It had two relaxing hot tubs for unwinding after busy touring days and a library for playing games and working puzzles in the afternoon. There were several different options for seeing and hearing live music onboard, which we both enjoyed.

Afternoon tea is always our favorite thing to do, so we didn’t miss a single day unless we were on an excursion. A close runner-up was the nightly entertainment, with incredibly talented singers and dancers. However, I think the crowd would agree that the outstanding BBC Earth Experience big-screen film, with a live orchestra on the World Stage, was unbelievable.

The Zaandam’s Amazing Food

Holland America’s Zaandam had good food in the main dining room, but the Canaletto and Pinnacle Grill specialty restaurants were really top-notch. We also had the pleasure of dining at Rudi Sodamin’s Sel de Mer , an extraordinary evening full of perfectly prepared dishes. A unique dish to try is the fruits de mer, a massive sampling of lobster, crab, langoustines, jumbo shrimp, mussels, oysters, and clams.

After looking through my pictures from this impressive Canada and New England cruise, I realized that one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen on a cruise ship was the poutine bar, typical for this region. Cheese curds were the base (classic and fried) with a wide array of toppings — shredded cheeses, sautéed mushrooms, sautéed onions, chives, and several gravies.

For lunch, Tandoori chicken and tuna poke tostadas were a few of my favorite offerings. Holland America also does a fantastic job of providing vegetables and healthy choices. I appreciated the creamed spinach, sautéed zucchini, and cheddar cheese grits side dishes, though they aren’t necessarily healthy.

Appetizers always win me over — they are my favorite part of the evening’s dining experience. Bay Shrimp potato tots and seafood deviled eggs were incredible choices. For the main course, try the beef short rib stroganoff, citrus grilled rainbow trout, and any beef dishes.

Spa Experiences

I’m a spa girl on my cruises and haven’t had a bad one yet. First, I love the Elemis product line that they use, and second, I enjoy meeting the friendly spa aestheticians who are as well-trained and sweet as can be. Visit the Greenhouse Spa and Salon for a sublime and blissfully relaxing massage, body treatment, or facial.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Beekeeping and shepherding? The wildest things you can do while on a cruise

Holland America

To the uninitiated, cruises are for pensioners who want to while away their silver years mingling and playing bingo while bobbing around the Caribbean.

The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Cruise ships are now hip. And there are routes all over the world so intrepid travellers can visit the four corners of the earth in style, opening voyagers to exciting new experiences.

From becoming a shepherd for a day in Mahon, Spain , to trying your hand at beekeeping in Lithuania, or camping on ice-capped plains in Alaska or mingling with elephants in South Africa – cruising isn’t just about what’s on the ship.

The best of the best excursions travellers can do while cruising have been plucked from the seas for the Sailawaze Excellence Awards (BTW  you can win a cruise for two by voting here , we should add…) with some major shortlisted collaborations from the likes of Fred. Olden Cruise Lines, Oceania Cruises, Havila Voyages, Pandaw Expeditions, Azamara, Holland America, CroisiEurope, Hurtigruten and Uniworld.

So where would you like to go? Italy? Alaska? Cambodia?

Vote to win a cruise

Do you love cruising? Are you an intrepid traveller? Maybe you just like looking at pictures of luxe ships. No matter which, we want you to vote!

Metro has partnered with the  Sailawaze Excellence Awards , highlighting the very best in cruising when it comes to sustainability, wellness, entertainment and beyond.

And we need YOU to simply select what you’ve been most impressed by.

The best bit? By voting you’ll automatically be in with a chance of winning a cruise for two worth £2,500.

Say bon voyage to the more traditional categories of ‘best large ship’ or ‘best luxury cruise line’ and instead ahoy to innovation, food and drink and showstopping performances.

Vote for your favourite here .

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

Tallinn's Old Town with St Olaf's church's spire towering above it, Estonia

Among the Fred. Olsen Cruise Line routes are a tour of the Baltic, which will allow you to jump off in Lithuania to explore the fascinating history of the countryside.

A picturesque drive will take you to meet Jurate and Giedre, who will introduce you to the 260 bee families of their apiary and invite you to both taste and have a go at making the honey. Sweet.

And if honey isn’t your jam, other excursions on the Olsen Cruise Lines tour include visiting Icelandic homes and RIB rides around the Giant’s Causeway in Belfast.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises

With Oceania Cruises you can follow the crowds or be a shepherd – literally – with their routes that aim to help you go native. Their immersive cruise offerings are designed to help you experience a fully authentic travelling experience, wherever you are in the world.

You can become a shepherd for a day in Mahon, Spain or visit Buenos Aires where a local guide will take you to the markets before dinner at an Argentinian home. Or if fish is your dish, why not try a day at sea with the natives in Portofino, Italy?

Havila Voyages

Havila Voyages

Norwegian cruise provider Havila Voyages will ferry you towards the North Pole where you can witness breathtaking views that many can only dream of. Their routes will take you to the North Cape, the northernmost point of mainland Europe where travellers can see the curve of the earth.

Also on offer are a midnight concert at Tromso Cathedral, king crab fishing and husky sledding – among other chilly adventures like Fjord trips, sea kayaking or a deep dive into Norwegian Viking history.

Pandaw Expeditions

Fishing at Sunset on the Mekong River

If the oceans aren’t your thing, Pandaw Expeditions provide luxury small-ship cruises across Asia’s rivers and lakes, so you can visit the dolphin grounds at Kratie in far north Cambodia.

Snaking through China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Pandaw boats aim to help you explore remote and often hard-to-navigate rivers in specially-designed luxury small ships.

Once you’ve seen the beauty of the Ganges, Mekong and China’s Red River you can sail across Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in SE Asia.

Fuji Mountain and Pink Sakura Branches at Kawaguchiko Lake

Relaxation is the name of the day at Azamara where guests are given time to explore the Mediterranean, Northern and Western Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, the Panama Canal, and Central & North America at a slow pace.

And if your dream destination is Japan, their 15-night Japan intensive voyage includes six extended destination days in Akita, Niigata, Kanazawa, Busan, Kitakyushu and Hiroshima, plus two overnight stays in Kobe and Tokyo. Hai, onegai shimasu! (Yes, please.)

Holland America Line

Holland America cruiseship with ice caps in the background.

If grizzly bears are your thing, the Holland America Line is the only cruise line to take guests to Canada’s newest Unesco World Heritage Site, Tr’ondëk-Klondike, which offers a spectacular 178 wildlife and wilderness tours in Alaska.

Located along the Yukon River in the sub-arctic region of Northwest Canada, Tr’ondëk-Klondike, is a living cultural landscape that bears witness to the long-standing coexistence of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and the newcomers who found themselves linked to each other by the famous gold rush of the 19th century. Sounds like a trip that’s worth its weight in gold.

CroisiEurope

CroisiEurope

If a safari is on your bucket list, CroisiEurope provides cruises across South Africa to the Chobe National Park, which is home to 50,000 elephants. Or you could take the trip along the shores of Lake Kariba to see the hippos and more than 240 species of native birds.

Or for an even greater buzz, take a chopper over the Victoria Falls to view their majesty from the skies.

Hurtigruten

HX Hurtigruten Expeditions

For the more intrepid traveller, camping under the Northern Lights might float your boat. Northern operator Hurtigruten Cruises will take you all over Norway and into its snow-capped regions and beyond.

And if you get tired of the on-board luxury, you can camp in Antarctica in the style of early Amundsen and Scott to give you a snowy experience unlike any other on the HX Hurtigruten Expeditions ship. You will stay cosy and warm with the most high-tech camping gear before heading out under the stars to see the region’s moonlit beauty.

Town on the Ganges

Maybe wellness is your thing. Uniworld, which cruises across the globe, offers a Ganges River Village Exploration where you can begin your day with sun salutes on the top deck, or take part in fitness classes, massage treatments or a dip in the heated on-board pool, before heading inland to remote villages to enjoy the authentic yoga experience.
