Portland is Maine's second largest cruise port - following Bar Harbor . This port city is located on a peninsula (Maine USA's east coast) and north of Boston MA . On the West Coast USA is the namesake Portland Oregon .

Portland ME features historical and architectural attractions, and is also a major commercial, shipping and fishing centre. The port is a gateway to the resort islands in Casco Bay. There's a historic trail and lighthouse in the town. The nearby Kennebunkport is also worth visiting. Its art colony and Seashore Trolley Museum display more than 200 authentic streetcars.

Established in 1632, the town was destroyed in 1676 by Indians, and again in 1690 by Indians and the French. The settlement (then part of Falmouth) was damaged by the British in 1775. In 1786, after being separated from Falmouth, it was named after Portland England .

In 2015, the visiting around 55,000 cruise tourists had an economic impact of USD 5,8 million. In 2016, the cruise port handled 70 ship calls. In August 2016, the port had its ever largest cruise ship docked -  RCI' s  Anthem of the Seas , bringing to the city 4974 passengers and 1480 crew. Cruising season 2016's economic impact was USD 11 million.

In 2017, the port reported a record year as the number of visiting cruise passengers for the first time ever exceeded 100,000. Port's statistics showed a 6% increase in passenger volumes and a 10% increase in crew numbers over 2016. In 2018, the port handled total 32 ship calls (23% over 2017) and around 39,000 passengers. For season 2019 were booked 40 berths.

On March 16, 2018, was announced a plan to fund the USD 2 million ferry terminal's upgrade project. The Ocean Gateway terminal serves all ferries connecting Maine USA with Nova Scotia (NS Canada). The primary funding party will be the Canadian company Bay Ferries Ltd (headquartered in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island ), which together with the NS government would pay for most of the upgrades. The decision was made after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency threatened to close the terminal's customs service as it didn't meet USA's federal standards. Bay Ferries is a subsidiary of Northumberland Ferries Ltd (parent NFL Holdings Ltd) and is subsidized by the NS taxpayers.

Portland ME cruise terminal

Cruise ships in Portland ME dock at Portland Ocean Terminal. Following the berth extension and dredging project (completed in April 2017), now the port can dock ships with LOA length 340 m (1115 ft) and max draft 11 m (36 ft). Port's total berthing space is around 2000 m (6560 ft).

The city is linked by  ferries  with Nova Scotia. In November 2017, the ferry service from Ocean Gateway terminal was terminated after US Customs required a terminal renovation (around USD 7 million in upgrades) in order the passenger facility to meet federal standards. The ferry service Maine - Nova Scotia will start again only if Portland provides USD 2 million for the project.

Bailey Island is a unique coastal community located within the town of Harpswell. For decades Harpswell has been a mecca for vacationers seeking a saltwater environment, a serene way of life, and an abundance of natural beauty. Its 216 miles of coastline consists of Harpswell Neck; the three large islands of Sebascodegan (Great Island), Orr’s Island, and Bailey Island , which are connected by bridges; and a scattering of over 200 smaller islands accessible only by boat. With some of the few remaining working harbors on the Maine coast, Harpswell offers an authenticity of which we are proud.

The Best Way to See Maine's Casco Bay Islands Is By Mail Boat

By Craig Cavallo

This image may contain Transportation Vehicle Boat Ferry Water Waterfront Dock Port Pier Watercraft and Vessel

Icy wind rips across the bow of the Maquoit II . The boat is entering Casco Bay from the coast of Portland, Maine and the city is in a freeze after a late-season snowstorm. But there’s work to be done, and residents of the small island communities throughout the bay rely on the Maquoit II —one of three mail boats operated by Casco Bay Lines —to deliver everything from luggage and letters to tractor tires and clapboard. Not only is the mail boat run open to the public, it’s actually the best way to see Maine’s islands, combining views of the state’s natural beauty with the timeless tradition of the mail boat, while offering glimpses of Maine’s island life.

Setting off from the Maine State Pier at a steady ten knots, two Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines purring underfoot, you quickly get a sense of the breadth of the bay’s 26-mile-wide opening. Skiffs, dwarfed by the Maquoit ’s 98-foot length, head in the opposite direction, steered by solo skippers on their way into the wharfs. The islands loom in the distance.

The twice-daily mailboat run goes to five of the bay’s islands: Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Long Island, Great Chebeague, and Cliff Island. Legend has it there’s an island for each day of the year, which is why they're sometimes referred to as the Calendar Islands. But one rider, a gentleman on his way to Little Diamond, the first stop, and a small island with a year-round population that can be counted on two hands, tells me there are actually 222. He’s on his way to check on his summer home after the storm.

Smaller freight is transported in wheeled carts that are tied off between stops and narrow enough to pass easily over the gangplank from boat to dock.

“Casco Bay Lines are responsible for sustaining the island communities,” Larry Legere, captain of the Masquoit II 's three-man crew, tells me. The ferry system, he says, carries everything to the islands you can imagine—except gasoline. (The Coast Guard prohibits carrying gasoline on passenger vessels—a separate barge is in charge of bringing fuel to islanders.)

Legere grew up south of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. He’s been with Casco Bay Lines for 44 years and tells me boats are part of his family history. Each of his uncles worked at Casco Bay Lines—so too have a number of his cousins, his sister, and each of his three daughters. His dad worked on steamboats during WWII and would moonlight as a charter boat captain in the '60s, “for golfing money,” he says. He used to ride along with his dad on those moonlit treks. Today, Legere is known around the docks as the unofficial historian of Casco Bay Lines.

“We’re the oldest continually operating ferry system in the country,” Legere says. Its history starts in the 1870s, and while the boats are now powered by diesel engines, until the '50s, Casco Bay Lines employed coal-fired steamboats. The mail run, as it exists today, has been around since the '60s and the company was privately owned for most of its history until 1981. “State legislature voted to allow the islanders to purchase the boats and the name, and it became a quasi-municipal transit company,” Legere informs me, drawing a comparison to a city’s public bus company.

Today, Casco Bay Lines operates seven scenic cruises that are open to the public. "Sunrise on the Bay," the earliest, leaves the Maine State Pier at 5:05 a.m.—sometimes carrying freight and mail but mostly kids heading to school and early birds with a reverence for dawn. The last is the "Moonlight Run," which leaves at 9:30 p.m. But it’s on the 10:00 a.m. mailboat run that you see and learn the most.

“It’s the most interesting,” Legere says. “You’re going to see pretty much everything we do on that trip. You get to see how the islanders live and get their supplies. It gives you a feel for what island life is like and the people who live on the islands.” That group of island-dwellers is a mix of year-round residents, largely fishermen and lobstermen, and those with summer homes they occupy from June through Labor Day, who are mostly retired or work on mainland Portland. “I’ve grown up with them, and they’ve grown up with me,” Legere says of the people he’s taken back and forth for decades. He mentions it takes a certain kind of person to live on the islands—you have to be okay with isolation, limited access to day-to-day necessities, and schedule constraints. As he tells it, he’s seen people go nuts from these realities, adding, “They’re a slave to the boat schedules." I ask Legere if after spending so much time shuttling between islands he has an island home: “I wouldn’t live on the islands if you paid me,” he says.

Tickets for the Mailboat Run are sold at the Casco Bay Lines office on the Maine State Pier. Should you want to set off on foot to explore one of the five islands, you’re welcome to do so on Long Island, Great Chebeague, and Cliff, which also has a small cafe—the other islands are private, without public beaches, facilities, or restaurants—and come back on the next mail boat. The Mailboat Run is limited to three hours, so it still leaves plenty of time in the day to explore the bounty Portland has to offer.

The Mailboat Run costs $16 and leaves Maine State Pier in Portland at 10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. every day from June 17 to September 4 (it operates on a different schedule outside of the summer months).

My buddy from away was in town and as I had never done the "Mailboat" route, we decided it would be the perfect thing to do on a sunny day, one day after a snowstorm. It was perfect! Was not very crowded in January, and all of the other passengers were locals and regulars who actually live out on the islands. You buy your tickets from the terminal at the Casco Bay docks. It's completely straightforward which way to go, as you can see. The waiting area is very clean and heated. The boat is a cute little guy. There are a fair amount of seats outside (which will obviously be cold during the winter) but there are a few benches with tables inside the boat as well (heated). We went back and forth a few times to recharge and check out the scenery. The snowfall produced beautiful blacks and whites. I imagine it gets quite crowded in the summer months, but I still recommend this as a good 2.5-ish hour tour. A 2.5-ish hour tour.

Always a good, professional crew leading all those that utilize the ferry whether it be the island folks or tourists. They have many cruises available that I love to take my own visitors on. Check the schedules for fun and interesting cruises.

Amazing way to get out on the water in Portland for cheap! Love to take the RT ferry to Peaks Island and back. You don't even have to get off the boat if you don't want to, we usually stay on and just enjoy the hour cruising around the bay. Pretty cheap (~$7/pp) compared to $60+ to go out on one of the chartered boats! Bring a layer, it gets chilly on the water. Can be absolutely packed during prime time on the weekends. I like to go around sunset as there's much smaller crowds and you get to see the sun set on the water!

casco bay cruise lines schedule

Easy, affordable and fun in the summer. We love taking out of town guests out on the ocean and this is the perfect way to do it. They do a really good job maintaining their equipment doesn't make me nervous at all, when you see the care and upkeep. The staff members are really pleasant and patient (with the nonsense with some visitors). From the crew on the boats to the ticket agents, they are all very pleasant to deal with. The are many options to choose from, if you want to go direct to the island or take a roundabout way. One thing I appreciate is when we had to DJ an event on Peaks Island this past summer, they had a Ferry depart the island at 11:30, which gave us plenty of time to pack up our vehicle and wait without rushing too much. I recommend Casco Bay Lines.

Photo of Henry Y.

ran on time and the people working the ferry were so nice! even offered to take photos for us without us even asking. on the way to peaks island we were absolutely slammed by kids on field trips. it was completely packed! but kinda fun that way on the way back there was literally 10 people. so that was also very nice to be able to walk around the boat and see the different views. kids are free so and it was cheap for just me, so it was well worth it. we didnt have time to get off and explore the island so we only did the there and back. it was fun enough for us!

Photo of Ryan C.

I heard that it's definitely worth heading off peninsula and we picked Peaks Island in Casco Bay and to get there we found out we had to take a ferry. Casco Bay Lines is pretty reliable and cheap for a round trip ride to and from Peaks Island. It was very smooth and you get a great view of Portland and all of its surrounding islands! Definitely try it out if you wanted to head to other islands.

My excursion was just perfect. I took the ferry from Portland to Cliff Island and back. It was a perfect Autumn day and the ocean breezes were absolutely spot-on. It was the New England blast that I needed.

casco bay cruise lines schedule

This is a well run ferry service to the islands of Casco Bay. We took a RT car ferry to peaks Island the ferry was fast, only about a 15 min trip, clean, punctual and very affordable! The trip cost us both about $17. Great views from the boat and you can bring bikes on with you for an extra fee. Their terminal was large modern had bathrooms, seats and buying tickets was very easy. You can find current timetables on their website - but in season the ferry runs often, pretty much every hour.

What a great way to see the islands and the beautiful coastal water. The employees were really friendly and the boat is really clean. So glad we took the ferry today, so worth it!

We were honored and earlier departure time, which was a great act in customer service. The boat wasn't fancy, but it held cars for transport and a whole lot of people. The ride to the island was quick.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

discovery bay yacht club boat parade 2023

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.
