Understand [ edit ]

The Welsh-language name Ceredigion means 'Land of Ceredig', who was a son of Cunedda, a chieftain who reconquered much of Wales from the Irish around the fifth century CE.

Aside from the long coastline on Cardigan Bay, much of Cardiganshire is dominated by the Cambrian Mountains.

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

The A487 runs parallel to the coast to Cardigan and Aberystwyth, from Fishguard in the south to Bangor in the north. The A44 goes eastwards from Aberystwyth to Rhayader, Leominster, Worcester and Oxford.

By rail [ edit ]

There are two mainline railway stations in Ceredigion; Aberystwyth and Borth. From these stations passengers can catch trains from Birmingham and Shrewsbury . Services are provided by Arriva Trains Wales on the Cambrian Line.

  • Aberystwyth , the terminus of the line, the station is on the outskirts of the town. A short walk from the station is the idyllic seafront. A typical Victorian seafront, with large houses overlooking the beach.
  • Borth , the next stop from Aberystwyth. Located just off the main road which runs parallel to the beach. Beach side amenities are typical of a British resort, cafes and shops sell buckets, spades, body boards, tea, coffee and sandwiches. Free public toilets are a very short walk from the station on the main road.

Aberaeron, Mid Wales

Must do in Aberaeron

Whether you enjoy a stroll around a Georgian country estate, chilling out on the beach or a hearty harbour meal after a train ride, Aberaeron, on the Ceredigion coast, is a place where all visitors can explore and unwind.

The first thing most people see when they approach Aberaeron are the charming, colourful houses adorning the town like jewels. Here's a place to come and relax - mooching around the harbour, exploring the independent shops and craft centres and enjoying a homemade cake and cuppa. The town is right on the Wales Coast Path and  The Coastal Way . Ceredigion's coast is also well-known for wildlife including the famous Cardigan Bay bottlenose dolphin pods. Here's our short guide to things to see and do in Aberaeron and the surrounding area.

Aberaeron's colourful harbour, Ceredigion, Mid Wales

Fresh food overlooking the harbour

Aside from the obvious perk of beautiful views across the harbour in all weathers, Y Seler  is one of Aberaeron's best rated restaurants, with a cosy atmosphere and specialities including Carmarthenshire mussels, scallops, cod, shrimp and sea bass. The dog friendly terrace is the setting for tapas during the summer months.

Experts in fresh fish and ice cream

Fresh fish and seafood are sold by the waterside here at The Hive , while squid, crab, pulled pork and steak feature on the restaurant menu. Sweet teeth are catered for in unique style with homemade honey ice cream (including a Turkish Delight version), and you'll be entertained by live music at the weekend.

The Hive, Aberaeron, Ceredigion, Mid Wales

Llanerchaeron Georgian villa and gardens

There's a lot to take in at the National Trust owned  Llanerchaeron . This minor gentry estate is largely unchanged since the 18th century, when John Nash designed its villa and walled kitchen gardens. Meet sheep, pigs and Welsh black cattle on the working organic farm or wander around artefacts left by its last resident 25 years ago.

Glorious farm fresh produce

Crossing 45 acres of wildlife, Blaencamel Organic Farm is an award winning family farm in nearby Ciliau Aeron, renowned for its organic produce, ecological ethos and woodlands. Take a stroll along the River Nant and visit the acre of greenhouses to find out the secrets behind their specialities, then visit the shop to pick, taste and sample for yourself. Check out the Blaencamel Facebook page for more info.

Dolphin spotting in Cardigan Bay

Cardigan Bay  is just one of two places along the British coast where bottlenose dolphins can be spotted. Over 300 of them spend part of the year in the area, usually throughout the summer, peaking in numbers during September and October. There are several companies operating  boat trips , mainly from nearby pretty village of New Quay, to watch these wonderful creatures cavorting in their natural habitat.

Dolphin spotting, Cardigan, Ceredigion, Mid Wales

New Quay Honey Farm: a hive of serenity

Honey wine was an inebriating favourite among Welsh people during Roman times, so this passionately run complex of hives added a tipple making meadery to its tea room and shop, which had been supplying sweet treats since the mid 1980s.  An intriguing accompanying exhibition  is laid out on the top floor of a chapel. New Quay Honey Farm 's Heather Mead has won awards, featured on the Great British Menu on TV and called the best mead I've ever tasted by a writer in The Times.

Hafod estate - a landscape designed to please.

From the mid 18th century, Thomas Johnes – perhaps the best known owner of Hafod , a spectacular 200 hectare estate - laid out its paths in a picturesque style to suit picturesque walks. 200 years later, his success means you can plot your path (from easy to strenuous) along bridges, monuments, cascades and valleys. Hafod is around 50mins drive form Aberaeron - there's a choice of routes you can take to explore the gorgeous Ceredigion countryside.

Vale of Rheidol Railway

See stunning scenery in style. A short drive down the coast road to Aberystwyth brings you to the Vale of Rheidol Railway , or you can catch the train from Devil's Bridge. Opened to the public in 1902, it's one of the most scenic narrow gauge routes in the world. The last steam railway owned by British Rail before being privatised in 1989, it's now a gentle way to wind through stop-off points from Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth.

Devil's Bridge waterfalls and the Vale of Rheidol Railway

Further information

You are spoiled for choice with lovely places to stay in the area. The Georgian influence is strong in the town itself with elegant guest houses, sea view apartments and harbourside hotels to choose from. Further out in the countryside you can camp, glamp in yurts and cosy shepherd's huts or find a large family sized self-catering barn or a sweet, romantic cottage for two.

Cardigan-historic former county town on the Teifi

Cardigan is the historic gateway into Ceredigion from the south west. Cardigan's Welsh name is Aberteifi:  [town at] the mouth of the Teifi, giving its name to Cardigan Bay as it developed as a significant 18th century Atlantic seaport.

Cardigan Bay is the largest bay on the Welsh coast. Cardigan Bay's wide sweep is made up of several smaller bays. Communities have grown around the sheltered coves, based on trading, and today many are popular holiday spots.

ceredigion tourist information

Dogs are welcome on Ceredigion beaches.

However, like many other beaches along the Welsh coast, there are restrictions on access to the most popular family beaches between 1 May and 30 September.

The restrictions do not apply to a guide dog accompanying a registered blind person.

ceredigion tourist information

There is always an area of beach where the whole family, including pets, can enjoy together. See the individual beach pages and check for restrictions information on signs close to the beach before taking your dog onto the beach.

It's fun to explore the beach and to splash about between the waves, especially with many great spots along the Ceredigion coast to enjoy the sand and surf.

To make sure you’re as safe as possible, find a beach with a lifeguard.

You can ask a lifeguard for advice about conditions in the water, like how strong the waves are, and where it's safe to swim. Lifeguards also provide help if you get into difficulty in the water or on the beach.

ceredigion tourist information

The RNLI, who understand our shores, have some good tips and wise advice on how to keep safe along the coast.

If there are no lifeguards on your beach it's important to be aware of hazards, to know the risks and to follow the RNLI beach safety advice - it could save your life or that of a loved one.

Time passes quickly when the tiny wildlife of rockpools distract attention, or when sandcastle moats begin to fill. Waves can easily knock children and even grownups off their feet.

Some beaches even have caves and waterfalls to explore, and you may be tempted to venture beyond the main beach - there are lots of secret coves or rocky ledges which might appear safe and accessible at very low tide.

The tide can come in surprisingly quickly and tide times and heights vary each day so it's easy to be caught out as it can come in and cut you off without you noticing.

Check Ceredigion Tide Tables online or get a handy pocket sized booklet from the Tourist Information Centres or local shops.

Ceredigion Tide Tables

For swimming - choose a beach which has lifeguards, and keep an eye out for the red and yellow flags that the lifeguards put out to indicate the safest area for swimming or bodyboarding. Black and white chequered flags mean that the area is good for kayaks or surfboards. A red flag means danger – do not enter the water.

Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. At over four miles an hour, they move faster than an Olympic swimmer! Remember the RNLI's advice: Float to Live

Water temperature can be deceptive - it may be colder than it looks. Anything below 15 degrees is defined as 'cold water' which could cause 'cold water shock'.

Green Seas Award

The Green Coast Award is for rural beaches, usually small, beautiful and wild places, which do not have the infrastructure or more intensive management of more traditional or urban seaside resorts.  The award recognises the unspoilt environments and excellent water quality as well as sensitive management of the beach.
