Enhance your cruise

Each of our cruises has been carefully designed for you to get the very best out of your time on board; and now you can enhance your cruise to make it even more special.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

7 Best Cruise Ships in the Canary Islands

christmas cruise canary islands

With year-round sunshine, spectacular scenery and stunning beaches, it's not hard to see the appeal of the Canary Islands. This Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa is far enough away to soak up some vitamin D, but close enough for a seven to 14-night cruise.

Thanks to its popularity with Brits, most of the major cruise lines sail here, either solely touring the islands, or passing through as part of a transatlantic trip. Many ships also dock at ports in Portugal and Spain en route, so you can get a taste of life in the Mediterranean and experience the island of Madeira , too.

To help you select the right cruise, we’ve compiled a list of our top eight ships for seeing the Canary Islands in style.

  • Marella Explorer is a Top Choice for All-Inclusive Fun in the Sun
  • Queen Victoria Offers the Best in the Canary Islands for a "Golden Age" Experience
  • Celebrity Apex is a Chic Ship that's Well-Suited to Couples
  • P&O Azura is the Best Ship for Home Comforts in the Canary Island
  • Fred. Olsen's Bolette is the Best for a Regional No-Fly Cruise to the Canaries
  • Anthem of the Seas is the Canary Islands Ship for Whizz-Bang Amenities

1. Spirit of Discovery is a Sophisticated Option for a Solo 50+ Traveller

Saga Cruises' new ship, Spirit of Discovery, is set to be christened by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in Dover

The 999-passenger Spirit of Discovery , one of Saga Cruises ' two custom-made ships, is a superb choice for over-50 travellers, including solo travellers, with a glorious Art Deco-style pool deck, cabins all with balconies and marble-clad bathrooms and complimentary room service.

Spirit of Discovery is a beautiful ship and feels more like a luxury vessel, with a large number of inclusions, including all dining, including speciality restaurants; unlimited drinks; WiFi; gratuities and a taxi to and from the port, within 250 miles.

The ship offers a selection of no-fly Canary Islands including "Capitals of the Canary Islands" and "Christmas in the Canary Islands" departing from Portsmouth. As well as visiting several of the Canary Islands, the ship calls to Funchal in Madeira, with a selection of included excursions.

A boon for solo cruisers: There are 109 dedicated solo occupancy cabins — 20 percent of all accommodation onboard.

2. Marella Explorer is a Top Choice for All-Inclusive Fun in the Sun

Marella Explorer Pool Deck

The 1,924-passenger ship has some lovely amenities, including a Champneys spa, a gin- and whisky-tasting bar and a large number of new shows.

There are 20 restaurants and bars, including the seaside-themed Snack Shack for casual poolside meals and Kora La for Indian. There's an indoor cinema, a Sports & Family Deck, kids clubs and nighttime entertainment including movies shown on a big-screen under moonlight and excellent West End-style shows.

Seven-night itineraries cover Tenerife , Gran Canaria , Fuerteventura , Lanzarote , La Palma and Madeira, offering plenty of opportunity to delve into the region's volcanic national parks, golden beaches and quaint old towns.

3. Queen Victoria Offers the Best in the Canary Islands for a "Golden Age" Experience

christmas cruise canary islands

Having undergone a $40m refit in recent years, Cunard took the opportunity to extend Queen Victoria , increasing the number of cabins to 1,035 and adding a new dining room to the ship. As a result, it can now host more than 2,000 passengers on each voyage.

Although the facilities are modern, the ship retains the classic charm you’d expect from Cunard , recalling the heyday of the 1930s. With stunning chandeliers and polished-wood finishes, there’s an air of elegance throughout the public areas. In keeping with the luxury vibe, you could choose to indulge in wine-tasting experiences, afternoon teas, gala dinners and fine-dining during your voyage.

Cunard's Canary Islands voyages are no-fly itineraries from Southampton. Typically 12-nights or more during the winter season, they are a fantastic winter sun option without needing to fly.

Look out for the line's Canary Islands voyages on Queen Anne , Cunard's new ship debuting in May 2024.

4. Celebrity Apex is a Chic Ship that's Well-Suited to Couples

C E L A X Retreat Sundeck1a

We adore Celebrity Cruises ' Edge-class series, which strikes the right balance with a relaxed vibe and fanciful design, including chic Kelly Hoppen-designed spaces.

The 2,190-passenger Celebrity Apex — based in Southampton for a long summer season — features nifty innovations such as the ground-breaking Magic Carpet, a cantilevered platform that juts from the side of the ship and can move up and down, from where you could sip on cocktails as you watch the sunset while sailing from island to island.

Then there's Eden, a light-filled space for entertaining, a plush resort-style sun deck with padded loungers and a lively Grand Plaza. The spa is decadent, the cabins are spacious and food is, generally, excellent. Oh, and there are a range of flight-free cruises to the Canaries from Southampton. What's not to love?

5. P&O Azura is the Best Ship for Home Comforts in the Canary Island

Azura (Photo: P&O Cruise Line)

This much-loved Brit-centric ship is one of P&O Cruises' family-friendly vessels offering failsafe fly-cruises to the Canary Islands. While Azura is now close to 15 years old, it remains in great condition. Currency is in pounds sterling. There's Brodie's sports bar to keep up with Premier League football (as well as evening bingo and pub quizzes). Ballroom dancing lessons take place in the atrium. A fancy curry is available at Sindhu and kettles are in cabins for a morning brew.

Highlights of the 3,100-passenger Azura include the extra-fee Retreat, an uncrowded sun deck area with healthy breakfast and lunch options, fantastic kids' clubs, the Oasis Spa and the Glass House, a bar serving wine selected by expert Ollie Smith.

6. Fred. Olsen's Bolette is the Best for a Regional No-Fly Cruise to the Canaries

Bolette Departing Dover (Photo: Fred. Olsen)

With capacity for 1,338 passengers, Fred. Olsen’s Bolette is a mid-sized ship offering a traditional cruise experience and reasonable fares to the Canary Islands. Bolette has a wide selection of cabins, including 50 rooms dedicated to solo travellers, plus wheelchair accessible options.

Bolette has six restaurants, and 11 bars and lounges include a split-level show lounge for after-dinner entertainment and smaller bars and lounges; some of them also featuring live music and comedy. There are two pools — one with a retractable roof and the other overlooking the aft of the ship — two hot tubs and a spa with a thermal area, providing plenty of facilities for languid sea days and sun-soaked afternoons in port.

There's afternoon tea, a culinary theatre for cooking classes, ballroom dancing and kettles in cabins for a morning brew in bed. What's great for fans of Fred. Olsen is the line's regional departures — meaning there's no need to schlep down to Southampton if you live in Southport. Simply, book one of the Liverpool departures.

7. Anthem of the Seas is the Canary Islands Ship for Whizz-Bang Amenities

christmas cruise canary islands

More floating resort than cruise ship, you might be tempted to stay onboard Anthem of the Seas for the duration of your holiday. There’s so much for guests of all ages to enjoy, you’re unlikely to get bored while at sea.

It was the first Royal Caribbean ship to debut the Ripcord by iFly , North Star and Bionic Bar . It also boasts the Two70 venue, a Seaplex and Music Hall for show-stopping entertaining and fast-paced sports. There are rock climbing walls, FlowRider surf simulator , outdoor movie screens, four pools and the Vitality at Sea Spa, and among the 18 dining venues are Jamie's Italian , Johnny Rockets and Chops Grille .

What's more, Royal Caribbean has no-fly sailings direct from Southampton to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, plus La Coruna , Spain, and Lisbon , Portugal.

How our discounts work

On all cruises we set aside a number of cabins within each level at a discounted fare, with the highest discount of 35% for ocean cruises and 25% for river cruises available on selected levels. These cabins are sold on a first come, first served basis. As cabins are sold, the discount begins to reduce, and continues to reduce until those selected cabins are sold.

This means that the earlier you book, the higher the chance of securing a greater discount. Our price panels clearly show the full cruise price, along with the current discount fare.

Please note: During busy periods for holiday bookings, the early booking discount can reduce rapidly. We recommend that you book early to benefit from the best booking discounts and to secure your preferred cabin.

When promoting new cruises for the first time, we contact customers on our Advanced Registration list first, allowing then to secure the cabin of their choice and benefit from the best savings. Our brochures are then sent out to loyalty club members first, followed by past cruise goers and then everyone else.

Leixoes offers a gateway to Oporto, which is set beside the Douro River. On one bank lies Villa Nova de Gaia’s port wine lodges, which produce the city’s famous fortified wine, while on the other is the UNESCO-listed Ribeira old town.

Cobbled streets climb the steep hillside which is crammed with historic buildings, including the 12th-century cathedral, neoclassical Stock Exchange and Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara. The wooden Rabelo cargo boats, which once ferried barrels of port now carry sightseers along the river – the Ponte Dom Luis I bridge offers a good vantage point from which to appreciate the entire riverscape.

Cadiz, Spain

3,000-year-old Cadiz is Western Europe’s oldest continually inhabited city, having been founded by the ancient seafaring Phoenicians. It sits along a peninsula, and was refortified in the 17th-century after the British attacked twice, nearly destroying the city.

Key landmarks include the Baroque and neoclassical cathedral with its yellow dome and the adjoining El Sagrario, the Roman amphitheatre, Castillo de Santa Catalina and the Torre Tavira – one of 129 watchtowers dotted throughout the city. An included panoramic excursion offers a relaxing introduction to the city.

This relatively sleepy port’s origins can be seen in the whitewashed fishermen cottages and 17th-century church set around the coastal lagoon of El Charco de San Gines.

The 18th-century San Jose fortress now hosts a collection of art by such renowned Spanish artists as Picasso and Miro, while the Science and Art Centre is housed in the 19th-century manor of La Casa de Los Arroyo. From Arrecife, you can also discover the vast lava fields and crater-studded landscapes of Timanfaya National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Admire panoramic views across Funchal as you ascend to the suburb of Monte by cable car, before visiting the Botanical Gardens, step out onto the glass-bottomed skywalk at Cabo Girao, over Europe’s highest sea cliff, or join a team of local experts for a RIB ride in search of whales and dolphins.

A short drive from the city, Anaga Country Park is a beautifully preserved area of imposing mountains, deep valleys and numerous beaches. Here, you’ll find a plethora of native flora and fauna across the 35,800 acres of land.

Thing to do

Considered the second most popular carnival in the world, Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife promises to be bigger, brighter and better every single year. With lively music, incredible costumes and nonstop dancing, witnessing this fantastic celebration is a must when in Tenerife.

La Palma, Canary Islands

Cruise - Ventura

Warmer Waters

As the ship sails into warmer waters, consider visiting the onboard Library today for a leisurely read while enjoying the open deck. When you find yourself reclining on a lounger and craving a snack, indulge in a freshly made treat from your ship's poolside pizzeria. Delight in a delectable handmade pizza, expertly stone-baked and adorned with gooey Provolone cheese from Italy. This is an ideal choice for a light bite or a quick lunch on the go before embarking on your next adventure. What's more, it's included in the cost of your holiday!

Madeira, Portugal

Land ahoy! Following a hearty breakfast, you'll arrive at your first port, Madeira. Once ashore, the reason this destination is dubbed the Garden Island becomes evident—a lush tapestry of colourful sub-tropical plants, trees, and flowers fills the air with a sweet fragrance. Visual delights include waterfalls in the forest and Funchal's vibrant flower markets. Don't miss the opportunity to savour the local cuisine, heavily influenced by Portuguese and African flavors. Specialties include espetada (grilled meat skewers with rice, potatoes, and vegetables), small lapas (sea snails in a garlic sauce), peixe espada com banana (swordfish with banana sauce), and bolo do caco (traditional Madeiran bread with a crispy crust and soft interior, cooked in a wood-fired oven).

To complement your culinary experience, try the local libation known as "poncha," often referred to as the medicinal 'local poison.' Made with rum, honey, lemon juice, and orange juice, it's typically served in a small glass, boasting a delightful combination of sweet and tart flavours.

Tenerife Christmas

Tenerife, Spain

Tenerife offers a genuine slice of paradise. Immerse yourself in its culinary delights, witness tranquil sunsets painted in hues of pink, orange, and yellow, and capture the beauty with your underwater camera. While the island boasts countless adventurous experiences, it also offers serene and idyllic settings with glistening waters and powdery-soft sands.

Santa Cruz, Tenerife's cruise port, has evolved from a humble fishing village into a splendid city adorned with classy bars, restaurants, diverse shops, elegant architecture, and intriguing museums. As you dock in Tenerife, the excitement begins just beyond the port gates, where a cafe-lined boulevard leads to the Plaza de España, the heart of the port's primary shopping area. If you prefer museums and galleries, explore the Museo de Bellas Artes, housing works by Bruegel, or delve into the island's history, topography, flora, and fauna at the Museo de la Naturaleza y El Hombre.

Gran Canaria, Spain

A new day, a new island. Las Palmas stands out as one of the most sought-after destinations in the Canary Islands, particularly cherished by those who relish year-round sunshine. The Cruise Terminal, conveniently located just 100 meters from the city centre, is easily accessible with the assistance of our dedicated care team. Established in 1478, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria proudly showcases a rich historical and cultural legacy, much of which is nestled in the Vegueta district—the town's oldest quarter, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. For those inclined towards the beach, Playa de las Canteras is also within convenient reach.

Lanzarote (Arrecife), Canary Islands

Today we visit the unique island of Lanzarote. The lunar-esque terrain boasts a mesmerising palette of red, orange, and yellow, a result of over 100 volcanic eruptions that occurred in the 1700s. The Ventura will dock in Arrecife, the island’s capital, derived from the Spanish word for 'reef,' a nod to the vast rock reef that blankets the island's beaches. You’ll have the entire day to enjoy its sun-washed plazas, cool bars and atmospheric backstreets. If you’re looking for a little bit of local culture, check out the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo, which features several works from the island’s most influential artist, César Manrique.

Ventura Oasis Spa And Salon Simon Kennedy Oct 23 8 All Rights

After a few exhilarating days exploring the diverse Canary Islands, why not dedicate today to onboard relaxation. Seize this perfect opportunity for a day of leisure. The Ventura is well-equipped for a complete pampering experience, boasting extensive spa facilities, including a hairdresser. Treat yourselves to a full day of care provided by the onboard staff and the attentive Limitless Travel team.

Lisbon, Portugal

Day Ten of your cruise proves to be a delightful experience. Today, the ship will be making port in the vibrant Portuguese capital of Lisbon, a perennial favourite among Limitless travellers. Ensure your camera is ready, as you'll have the opportunity to capture the charming, candy - coloured scenery and savour delicious custard tarts.

Some of the most stunning views of the Portuguese capital unfold as your ship cruises along the Tagus River, passing iconic landmarks like the Belem Tower and the impressive Monument to the Discoveries, featuring a statue of Henry the Navigator. Upon arriving at the Lisbon cruise port, take note that although compact for a European capital, the city sprawls a bit. It's advisable to focus on specific districts—Baixa, Bairro Alto, and Alfama—each possessing its own distinctive charm. Baixa boasts bustling streets adorned with inviting shops, cafes, and restaurants, while Alfama presents the atmospheric old town characterised by medieval and Moorish-style buildings, wrought-iron balconies draped with trailing flowers, and a mix of quaint shops and bars.

Customers at dinner

As the ship gradually sets its course back north, today offers you the freedom to leisurely explore the remaining amenities aboard the Ventura. Consider a visit to The Metropolis, a unique venue that brings you the excitement of the world's coolest destinations. An innovative 20-meter floor-to-ceiling video wall displays breathtaking cityscapes, allowing you to virtually gaze upon Paris, New York, or Sydney while sipping your favourite aperitif.

For those with a penchant for culinary delights, you've likely been spoiled for choice throughout your journey. While many different restaurants are included in your package, it's easy to overlook the specialty dining options. Although these may come with a small extra charge, it's a small indulgence worth considering while on holiday. If a specialty restaurant captures your interest, be sure to book it through your onboard app, as the exceptional cuisine tends to be in high demand. The dedicated Limitless staff will, of course, be available to assist with any bookings if needed.

Canary Islands Travelling Tip

Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the four main islands that make up the Canary Islands and with a Canary Island cruise, you can choose what island-hopping you would like to do to tailor the holiday of your dreams.

The most common ‘weather problem’ in the Canary Islands is sunburn and sunstroke. Always wear plenty of sunscreen and keep well-hydrated to avoid these issues.

Top Canary Islands

Each island in the Canaries is quite distinct from its neighbour in what it has to offer, giving those enjoying a Canary Island cruise a chance to sample a little bit of everything. Below, we give you a flavour of each island and what you may expect.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest island , but it is fondly referred to as the ‘ Continent in Miniature ’, with scenic diversity across this neatly rounded island making it one of the Canary Islands’ most popular.

Gran Canaria’s interior is rugged with mountains and lush green with subtropical forests. As a popular hiking destination, it has well-marked trails, enabling even the most novice explorer to enjoy its impressive views.

The colourful capital of Las Palmas is famed for its vibrant nightlife, but stroll a little further into its neighbourhoods and there is plenty of history to discover.

For the best beaches, head south to Maspalomas . With 17km of glorious coastline, consisting of wide sandy beaches and shallow waters, it is a beach-lovers paradise. --> Gran Canaria cruises

Interesting fact on Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are not named after the yellow bird, but instead ‘Canaria’ is the Latin word for dog. It is thought that when the first Europeans arrived, they found large dogs on the island of Gran Canaria. However, alternative reports suggest the islands could be named after what the Romans called ‘sea dogs’, referring to the seals that inhabited the island.

Tenerife is the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands . It has plenty to offer visitors looking for sun-filled days at the beach, with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops along its main resorts of Playa Las Americas , Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Laguna offers a haven for those seeking culture. It is the oldest example of an unfortified colonial town with architecture dating back to between the 15-17th century. Here, you can spend the day exploring fine cathedrals, churches and historical monuments.

Step a little further inland and you will discover the wild side of Tenerife at the Teide National Park . This jaw-dropping landscape of craters, volcanoes and rivers of petrified lava encircle Tenerife’s highest peak, Mount Teide, also a volcano, which stands 3,718m above sea level. --> Tenerife cruises

Visiting tip for Tenerife

Tenerife is host to the world’s second largest carnival, after Rio de Janeiro. For two weeks in February, the spirit of the fiesta fills the island with spectacular, colourful parades and lively music and dancing.

Lanzarote is famous for its stunning landscape, featuring volcanic caves , lakes of lava and craters, making it quite a unique destination to visit. A trip to Timanfaya National Park is a must, when in Lanzarote, to get a full appreciation of this epic terrain.

The black sands are characteristic of the island, but for those yearning for golden beaches, Lanzarote has plenty of those too. One of the best can be found at Papagayo, where snorkelling in the clear waters is also a big attraction.

Lanzarote is a chic, stylish island and this is mainly due to its local, visionary architect, César Manrique. His artistic influence fought against the appearance of high-rise buildings and instead focused on bringing together art and nature, using a model based on sustainability. Take time to visit one of the Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism to gain an appreciation of Lanzarote’s creative spirit. --> Lanzarote cruises

Interesting fact on Lanzarote

The last volcanic eruption on the island was in 1824, but there is still a significant amount of heat just below the surface; in fact, enough to cook a meal! Visit El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park and you can see how this in action.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of the least developed islands and quieter in its character, however it still has plenty to offer. The pristine coastline of the island has a colossal 150km of white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters . With a cooling sea-breeze, which is claimed to contain beneficial, relaxing negative ions, this the perfect place to escape from it all.

The Atlantic breeze across the island creates waves of up to 2m and has given Fuerteventura a long tradition of windsurfing and kite surfing that attracts water sports enthusiasts from around the world.

Draw yourself away from the beaches and you will find pretty, traditional white-washed villages and towns offering Spanish tapas and local wines. --> Fuerteventura cruises

Fuerteventura fascinating fact

One of the island’s most famous delicacies is its Majorero cheese . Made from goat’s milk, this delicious cheese is widely available, but also has its own dedicated cheese shop.

Best time to visit the Canary Islands

As a year-round sunshine destination, the Canary Islands will provide a glorious holiday at almost any time of year. In mid-summer, it can become particularly warm with average temperatures reaching the high 20 °C .

Temperatures are still warm and reach the low 20 °C between December and February, however many visitors choose to seek out winter sunshine here at this time of year, so it can become busy.

Spring and autumn still have temperatures that allow days at the beach, but without the influx of tourists, these are normally considered the ideal time to visit the island.

Top Packing Tip

If you are considering visiting Teide National Park or one of the other more mountainous areas, pack a few extra layers, as it can get chilly when higher up.

Canary Islands Sights

From active and adventurous, to cultural and chilled, there is a wide variety of great things to see and do when taking a cruise around the Canary Islands. Below are the things that have caught our imagination:

Whale watching in Tenerife

Off the south west coast of Tenerife up to 26 species of whales can be found, offering a potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these majestic marine mammals in their own natural habitat. Ethical guided tours are available with marine biologist guides. They will help you identify baleen whales, killer whales, dolphins, pilot whales and even the giant of the sea, the blue whale.

Jameos del Agua – Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua is an innovative and intriguing place, designed by Cesar Manrique from the naturally-occurring large openings in the lava tubes that have created two large caves. One of these caves hides a natural, clear lake that is home to thousands of albino crab species. The second is designed as a concert hall, delivering a magical evening out for its visitors

Las Palmas Cathedral – Gran Canaria

Las Palmas Cathedral is credited for being one of the most striking buildings in Gran Canaria, if not on the whole of the Canary Islands and with its beautiful bell tower and old, colourful stained-glass windows, it is clear to see why. It was the first church to be built on the Canary Islands, with work starting in 1500. However, it took one of the longest times to complete, finishing almost four centuries later. As a result, you can see a mixed influence in its architecture from Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical.

The remote island of El Hierro

If time allows and you are searching for true escapism, take a ferry from Tenerife to the remote island of El Hierro. This small, volcanic island only receives around 20,000 visitors per year. Here you can enjoy pure tranquillity, as you dive into its surrounding waters, discovering underwater cliffs that shelter colourful species of marine life, or hike through the enchanting, ancient forests where trees grow up to 8 metres tall.

Did you know…?

Several areas on the Canary Islands have been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve , including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. These are internationally recognised as protected areas that demonstrate a balanced relationship between humans and nature and that encourage sustainable development.

Regional Dishes

A Spanish archipelago with African and American influences and having access to some of the freshest seafood in the world, the cuisine found on the Canary Islands is unique, fresh and full of flavour. These are some of the local favourites:

More of an accompaniment than a dish, this spicy sauce is served with nearly every traditional dish on the islands. Made of garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper and cumin, this hot sauce can be made as hot as the weather!

Sancocho Canario

This traditional dish takes the freshest fish from the Canary Islands’ own local resource and serves it whole, with sweet potato, gofio (a Canarian roasted grain flour) and papas arrugadas (Spanish wrinkled potatoes). A simple, healthy dish that also enjoys a side of Mojo picón for that extra boost of flavour.

Rancho Canario

To satisfy your hunger after a day’s exploring, try Rancho Canario; a thick noodle soup made with chicken, pork, chickpeas and a selection of vegetables, including potatoes.

A foodie tip

One of Tenerife’s local delights is its honey, however, don’t get confused if asking for ‘Miel de Palma’, which translates literally as ‘honey of Palma’. This is actually a sauce made from the sap of palm tree and is used as a cooking ingredient.

To add to your pub quiz knowledge!

Tenerife has the largest waterpark in Europe : Siam Park. With 185 square kilometres of grounds, visitors can enjoy an impressively long network of slides and the highest artificial waves in the world!

The waters around the Canary Islands are home to one of the largest hard-shelled turtles in the world. The endangered Loggerhead Turtle can reach up to three feet in length and live for up to 67 years.

The Canary Island of La Gomera is where the whistling language originated. Called ‘Silbo Gomero’, it was developed to communicate across wide valleys.

The Canary Islands were one of Christopher Columbus’ stopovers on his way to the Americas. Lots of parallels can therefore identified between the Canaries and Latin America, both in terms of architecture and accent.

Top Travelling Tip

As a year-round destination, even in the winter, the waters at most beach resorts are warm enough for a swim, so bring your swimsuit! However, if you are a hiker, it is best not to plan your trip during the summer, as the heat can be a little too much!

Luxury Cruises to the Canary Islands

Canary Islands cruises give you a taste of Spain in a subtropical setting. The combination of country and location off the coast of Africa creates an exotic travel experience that blends the rhythm of island life with the cultural influences of Europe. Add in smoldering volcanoes, otherworldly-looking sand dunes, golden beaches, and colorful architecture, and you have a recipe for travel nirvana.

Our cruises to the Canary Islands will take you to some of the most beautiful destinations in this archipelago. On Tenerife, take a trip to the top of Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, with views across the sapphire ocean and other distant islands. Explore Gran Canaria’s rugged, forested interior and the sand dunes of Maspalomas. In Lanzarote, indulge in sizzling steaks and fish cooked over intense geothermal heat from a volcanic vent—it’s just one of many surprises you’ll uncover on a Europe cruise to the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands Cruise Highlights

National parks.

The Canary Islands are home to exquisite national parks rich in flora and fauna. You’ll find a varied terrain that changes from park to park. Spain’s highest mountain, the often snow-capped Teide, dominates Tenerife’s Teide National Park, with spectacular views and high-altitude hiking. In Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, you can ride a camel past dunes, and enjoy a lunch of steak cooked over the sizzling heat of an active volcano.

The Canary Islands offer a great variety of beaches, from sparkling black sand on Lanzarote to the rippling dunes at Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria. Tenerife’s finest beach is Las Teresitas, with golden sand imported from the Sahara. Las Canteras, located on Gran Canaria, is considered one of the best urban beaches in Spain. Fuerteventura, meanwhile, is known for its long sweeps of golden sand; head to Flag Beach to watch acrobatic kite surfers.

Food & Wine

The Canary Islands have a distinctive cuisine. Try papas arrugadas, which are tiny boiled potatoes served with salt and spicy mojo sauces. Fuerteventura is famous for its majorero cheese. Sample ropa vieja, a meaty stew, and dine on seafood paired with gofio, a paste of roasted grain flour. You’ll find papaya, mango, pineapple, avocado, and Canarian bananas piled high on market stalls. Meanwhile, there are magnificent wines to try on every island, grown in the rich volcanic soil.

Featured Canary Islands Cruise Ports

Tenerife, canary islands.

Popular Tenerife combines historic cities with golden beaches, lush valleys, and otherworldly volcanic scenery. Take the cable car up Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, for lunar landscapes and spectacular views. Explore bustling Santa Cruz with a guide, taking in the sights and stopping for tapas. Relax on the golden sand of Las Teresitas beach, and visit the 15th-century university town of La Laguna to admire the colorful palaces, churches, and convents.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is starkly beautiful, with active volcanoes and rippling sand dunes that seem to change color as the sun crosses the sky. Try the local Malvasia wine, and admire the work of architect César Manrique, whose bright white buildings with green and blue woodwork are apparent all over the island. The Jameos del Agua, a restaurant in a fern-draped grotto inside a lava tube, is one of his most spectacular structures.

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Las Palmas, the capital of lush, mountainous Gran Canaria, has an enchanting old center, Vegueta, the cobbled alleys lined with whitewashed houses adorned with traditional Canarian wooden balconies. See the house where Columbus stayed in 1492 before setting out for the Americas. Out of town, explore the coastal village of Agaete, where cliffs plunge straight into the sea and mangoes, oranges, and even coffee are grown. Or head to Maspalomas in the south to wander through the rolling sand dunes.
