How does this sound?

What is a driver assistance system?

Driver assistance systems relieve the driver of the task of driving, offer more comfort and increase safety. In an emergency, a driver assistance system can even take control of the car. Liability for the task of driving always remains with the driver.

Status Quo driver assistance systems

Currently, driver assistance systems act as practical support: Sensors capture information on – for example, speed limits – the distance to other vehicles and lane markings. Also, GPS and navigation system data feeds into the processing. Thanks to this data, audio signals or visual displays can warn against potentially hazardous situations.

However, there are already more advanced systems that not only warn you but also actively help you manage the vehicle if necessary or preferred. Some driver assistance systems brake, accelerate or perform active steering movements to avoid an accident or take the strain off the driver, for instance in critical or monotonous driving situations. Other systems assist you with maneuvering or parking.

Overview of driver assistance systems

Hill start assist Road sign recognition Emergency brake assist Steering and lane guidance assist Cruise control Distance control Speed limit assist Lane-change warning & lane-change assist Parking assist

How does hill start assist work?

You’ll certainly know this situation well: You’re driving up a hill and shortly before the peak, you need to stop. When starting with a manual gearbox, you press the clutch and take your foot off the brake to accelerate. What happens at this exact moment? You roll back. Hill start assist – or simply start assist – should prevent exactly this. When the driver disengages the brake, the rear axle secures the vehicle for a short time. When starting the driver assistant releases this once more.

Video

Benefits: This driver assistance system is certainly not indispensable for the safe operation of a vehicle as with sufficient experience you can avoid tricky situations yourself. The assistance system can nevertheless make starting on extreme gradients, or with an additional trailing load, more pleasant.

What added value does road sign recognition offer?

When you’re in slow-moving traffic it’s often difficult to devote your full attention to everything that is happening. The road layout, oncoming traffic, speed restrictions, what’s happening beside you as well as behind you: A driver has to bear all this in mind. Road sign recognition can relieve you from this with help of a camera system which scans road signs and represents the processed data on the display. Accordingly, the road signs are displayed directly on your screen. Often this system is contained within other driver assistance systems such as the right of way warner, the wrong way assistant or speed limit info.

Video

Benefits: For accurate results, the driver assistance system is able to take into account and process various data sources such as recognised road signs, navigation devices and current vehicle data. Road sign recognition offers you increased safety and comfort during your journey by providing you with information i.e. right of way rules. You can concentrate on the traffic better without having to constantly gaze at the forest of signposts.

How does emergency brake assist work?

Emergency brake assist warns about the risk of collision and, where appropriate, brings the vehicle to a complete stop before it results in a crash with an obstruction, a person or another vehicle. Sensors measure the current speed and distance of the car ahead or the static obstruction (e.g. a person). Depending on the system, cyclists can also be identified. Acoustic warning signals are complemented by visual displays. Prior to emergency braking the driver assistance system calculates the optimal braking power and the resulting necessary braking pressure. This computed pressure is, depending on the system, independently transmitted by the assistant into an automatic brake, or only then applied when you press the brake pedal. A further development of brake assist is avoidance manoeuvre assistance: In order to avoid a collision, this system actively supports the driver with an evasive manoeuvre.

Video

Benefits: Emergency brake assist offers many advantages: Drivers are often careless, distracted, find themselves in chaotic circumstances or underestimate the distance to the vehicle ahead. This brake assist can, at the very least, reduce the severity grade of certain types of vehicle collisions.

How does steering and lane guidance assist provide support?

Congestion, slow-moving traffic, and long, monotonous journeys are sadly not uncommon, especially on the highway. When this happens, you have to keep a steady hand and patiently follow the road, sometimes for long periods of time. In these situations, a steering and lane guidance assistant can help you keep your vehicle in the lane – at high speeds as well – and make the task of steering easier. Cameras detect the lane markings, thus guiding the driver assistance system to the boundaries of the lane you are driving in. A look beyond the borders of Europe shows just how much more advanced this technology has already become. In some countries, the BMW Driving Assistant allows drivers to cruise “hands-off” at speeds of up to 130 km/h.

Video

Benefits: Lane guidance assistants can relieve the driver from steering, offer a feeling of safety and, above all, make long motorway journeys more comfortable.

In what way does cruise control make driving easier?

Cruise control is also known as “Speed Control” and allows you to select your desired cruising speed. This often takes place in combination with distance control. Following activation the driver assistance system constantly maintains your chosen speed and therefore offers enhanced comfort during long-distances. Cruise control can electronically adjust the speed to the surroundings and appropriately adjust the engine power.

Video

Benefits: With this assistance system particularly long journeys are more relaxing, and you can concentrate on the traffic. In conjunction with distance control the driving comfort is further enhanced: This calculates the speed of the vehicle ahead and automatically alters your own speed.

What is distance control?

Distance control is also called Adaptive Cruise Control. With a pre-set desired speed this driver assistance system orientates to the vehicle ahead and automatically brakes or accelerates depending on the distance from the leading vehicle. This system has already been integrated into many modern vehicles. The applied sensors measure the current speed and the distance from the car ahead. If you find yourself in stop start traffic, the distance control takes over braking and start-up.

Video

Benefits: Above all, you can use distance control during long journeys in combination with the cruise control function in order to arrive at your destination much more relaxed and to rest your legs as you don’t need to continually press the pedals. You must of course still keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Besides comfort, distance control should also provide for greater safety during the journey.

What does the speed limit assist do?

This driver assistance system combines the distance control with speed limit recognition and can also called Speed Limit Assist. Speed limit assist superimposes information about the speed limit onto the display area. With the help of this assistant you can adapt the maximum speed of the vehicle to a particular limit. The system scans road signs with a camera. Software then processes all the data and combines this with the data from the navigation system. You can view this driver assistance system as additional “speed camera insurance” because, in supplementing cruise control and the distance controller, it recognises the respective speed limit and – in the latest design – also automatically adjusts.

Video

Benefits: According to research papers, around a quarter of accidents are due to speeding and the failure to maintain safe distances. Here, speed limit assist can increase your safety. Nevertheless, these systems do not absolve the vehicle operator of responsibility – they can however help to significantly reduce these numbers.

How does a lane-change warning work? Why use lane-change assist?

The lane-change warning can help you to safely execute a lane-change and support the view in the rear mirror and over the shoulder. Sensors monitor the area beside and behind your car, and they cover the notorious blind spot. If another car approaches your vehicle in the blind spot or is dangerously close and overlooked by the driver, the driver assistant recognises this and warns against changing lanes. This warning is made, for example, using flashing symbols in the side mirror and even with steering wheel vibrations or steering impulses. A further development is lane-change assist. This means you can change lanes automatically once you’ve set the indicator for a few seconds. In doing so, the system assesses whether there is another vehicle in the blind spot or dangerously close and only changes lane as long as the sensors do not detect a hazard.

Video

Benefits: A lane-change warning offers additional protection for road users, but it’s not a replacement for the rear and side mirrors or glancing over your shoulder. This driver assistance system can indeed help to avoid accidents – the driver must nevertheless pay full attention.

What advantages does parking assist offer?

Parking assistants support you when manoeuvring or parking and help protect you from parking damage. The range thereby extends from systems with a warning function to systems which display the surroundings or automatically carry out the parking process. Assistants make use of ultrasound and camera sensor data. Parkpilot indicates the distance to surrounding objects and in this way supports the drive mainly through the use of beeping. A rear camera is more detailed: Additionally, it displays the area behind the car and adds in suggested lines which provides guidance when parking. In further developments, driver assistance systems completely take over the parking process and independently carry out all the required steering manoeuvres as well as braking and acceleration. With such automated systems the assistant manoeuvres your car into and out of tight parking spaces at the touch of a button. Up to a certain speed the BMW Rear Drive Assist is capable of reconstructing the last 50m of the route driven in reverse. This can be useful, for example, in parking situations, but also when you want to reverse into a narrow lane.

Video

Benefits: With this assistance system tight car parks and narrow parking spaces on the roadside should no longer present a challenge. The comfort and advantages of a self-parking vehicle are clear.

From driver assistance systems to autonomous driving

The assistance systems presented offer only a small preview of the aim which many manufacturers are striving towards in the future: autonomous driving.

Matthias Hartwig, Scientific Advisor at the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM), and his team are occupied with the scientific, economic and legal questions surrounding this topic. In our free E-Book, he explains the challenges and prospects of autonomous driving.

Home » TEST DRIVE: BMW 2 Series Active Tourer – More Crossover Than Minivan

The first generation of BMW 2 Series Active Tourer sold so well  – over 420,000 units – that it warranted a second go at it. This new second-generation premium minivan is shaping up to be a big step up for casual customers and enthusiasts alike. With a design that resembles a crossover more than a minivan, the new 2 Series Active Tourer is also more premium than ever before. It also inherits a lot of features from more expensive BMWs – such as the iX – without the added premium prices.

To sample this new front-wheel drive offering from BMW, we flew to Malaga, Spain where the Bavarians hosted its international media launch. We had the chance – over the course of two days – to drive three different variants – the BMW 220i Active Tourer, 223i Active Tourer and the new top model 230e plug-in hybrid.

Bolder and More Aggressive

cruise control bmw active tourer

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer features one of the largest design jumps we’ve seen from BMW in some time. It’s far bolder and more aggressive looking than before, thanks to a massive new grille paired with sleek new headlights, slim taillights, and flush i4-style door handles. The side view is now closer in design to a small crossover with a far more attractive C-pillar and roofline. The new car also sits a bit lower and has a taller, more upright front end.

cruise control bmw active tourer

The back end of the new 2 Series Active Tourer is likely the exterior’s most improved area. It gets all-new taillights that are slim, modern, and much more premium looking than the chunky lights on the previous-gen model. For the first time in a combustion-powered BMW, the 2 Series Active Tourer hides its exhaust pipes.

Huge Quality Improvements Inside

cruise control bmw active tourer

The 2 Series Active Tourer was always known for having a comfortable and spacious interior. But the quality of materials and trims was not up to par with the other BMW models. That has all changed in the new model. The dash design is simple, elegant, and modern, while its tech is pulled straight from BMW’s top-of-the-line iX. It also gets some interesting unique touches, such as the all-new seat design and the new door panels. There are also more cubby holes for storage, such as underneath the armrest and the clever vertical-ish wireless charging tray ahead of the cupholders.

cruise control bmw active tourer

The large LCD screens from the i4 and iX also landed in the Active Tourer, powered by the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system. Furthermore, the new Live Cockpit Professional digital gauge screen is miles ahead of the old analog dials, in terms of functionality and technology. The seats are unique to the Active Tourer, offering great lumber and side support. Not only are there new standard seats, there are new Sport seats as well, for cars with M Sport packages. The latter of which come in leather/Alcantara and look very supportive.

cruise control bmw active tourer

Another novelty is the lack of an iDrive knob, so all the commands are now performed via touch or voice. A vertical wireless charging pad is also a premiere for a BMW model. Same goes for the toggle switch-style gear selector which is simple and easy to use. The double passenger vents also stand out with their design, while the steering wheel is also new and looks quite good, especially in M Sport guise, with its skeletonized metal spokes at the bottom.

cruise control bmw active tourer

One of the benefits of the front-wheel drive architecture is the additional interior passenger and cargo space. With the rear seats up, the 2 Series Active Tourer has 470 liters of cargo space, but fold the rear seats and its cargo space expands for 1,455 liters. Though, hybrid models lose a bit of space, dropping to 406/1,370 liters.

Without question, the interior is the U06 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer most improved area and the one that will draw the most customers over to it. However, it still needs to feel and drive like a BMW.

BMW 220i – The 3-Cylinder Driving Experience

cruise control bmw active tourer

Our first go was with the BMW 220i Active Tourer. The three-cylinder powered model comes with 170 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque (280 Nm) sending the power to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch Aisin transmission. The engine comes with a new technical update. More than 90 percent of the parts are new or improved, including a dual-injection system, the Miller Combustion method and an Evo ignition system. It also comes with the 48V mild hybrid which improves the fuel efficiency.

Yet, aside from the new engine, there’s actually some impressive engineering going on in the Active Tourer. An aluminum hood and aluminum bits inside the chassis cell give it a stiffer, more exit chassis than most other BMWs. Those lightweight improvements, along with newly revised lift-related dampers and what BMW calls near-actuator wheel slip limitation, will make it feel a bit livelier in the bends.

cruise control bmw active tourer

In real life driving, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation certainly improves agility, traction, and stability. The ARB tech applies the brakes as required at the front wheels when attacking a bend, giving the car a more neutral steering behavior. The adaptive M Suspension lowers the ride height fifteen millimeters, so you get sportier looks and improved driving experience.

The handling behavior can be adjusted through the new My Modes feature. There is a choice between Personal, Sport and Efficient. All three are self-explanatory and each can activate specific settings for the powertrain and steering. If you’re looking for a road trip companion, the Personal mode is the way to go. The BMW 220i Active Tourer feels at home on smooth roads delivering a serene and calm ride. And a bit more body roll.

cruise control bmw active tourer

Switch to Sport, the minivan gets sharper and more dynamic, adapting to a more aggressive driving style. It’s also the preferred mode when you attack the tight curvy roads around Malaga. The steering input is also more precise than in the Personal mode, while the suspension better absorbs the bumps in the road. The body roll is not completely gone, but it’s a bit more manageable. This is why also the new 2 Series Active Tourer feels more like a small crossover than the previous generation minivan.

It has been a while since we drove a BMW with 170 horsepower, but most of the time, it did the job. Of course, overtaking can always benefit from more ponnies, and this is why BMW offers quite a few powertrain choices.

BMW 223i – The Next Level Up

cruise control bmw active tourer

That brings us to the BMW 223i Active Tourer. With 218 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque (360 Nm), the new Active Tourer is significantly sharper on the road and a lot more fun to toss in corners. The power bump is immediately noticeable, giving the car a more composed feel on the road and certainly a lot more excitement to the driver. Overtaking is far easier and faster, while existing corners is a more enjoyable experience. The sluggish feel of the 220i model is now gone.

Although understeer is still the prevailing characteristic at the limit, the ARB improves the traction and directional stability. Is the Active Tourer delivering the usual BMW driving dynamics? That’s fairly impossible considering its platform, design and the target demographic. Yet, with a 0.26 drag coefficient, it is sportier than the previous generation.

cruise control bmw active tourer

Where the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer shines is in the interior and cargo space. It offers plenty of space for five people and their luggage, along with a very comfortable driving position even for drivers on the tall side. I’m 6″2 (1.89 m) tall and the driving position was extremely comfortable, both in length, width and height. Same goes for the rear seating position where the headroom was quiet generous (at least 5-6 inches of space).

cruise control bmw active tourer

The new seats offer great lumber and side support, and they were extremely comfortable over the course of hundreds of kilometers. The automated driving systems are worthy of a higher class BMW, so customers will get to enjoy their benefits without having to pay top dollar. Standard specification includes Cruise Control with brake function, Lane Departure Warning, the Evasion Assistant and front-collision warning. The BMW Drive Recorder functions are quite cool and entertaining when traveling with family, while the Remote Theft Recorder adds a new level of security.

Should I Buy One?

cruise control bmw active tourer

There is very little doubt that the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer won’t be a hit for the Bavarians. The new minivan with crossover-like characteristics improves upon all the areas of the previous generation, but without a huge price hike. It is also far more premium and BMW-like than ever before. And if you pick the 230e plug-in hybrid, it will be the fastest minivan picking up your kids from school.

The Active Tourer remains a non-US affair, but European customers will be able to take delivery of their units starting in March. xDrive models will follow later in the year and those are likely to be the customers’ first choice. An all-electric version is not likely to arrive on this generation, but it would absolutely make sense in the future.

Living With The 2 Series

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer features familiar BMW DNA which combines sleek lines with distinctive highlights such as the large chrome kidney grilles. Overall, the 2 Series uses a ‘less is more’ design approach with clean surfaces such as integrated door handles, reduced shut lines and couple like silhouette which all give the car a striking look yet also increases efficiency and refinement.

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer comes as standard with full-LED headlights, whilst adaptive LED lights with cornering function and non-dazzling high beam are an option.

The new 2 Series has a more raked look than the previous model which combined with the stretched side window design and slim C-pillars gives the car its dynamic look. Whilst the M Sport model increases the style further with M Sport upgrades including: 19” alloy wheels, rear spoiler, M sport front and rear bumpers and interior upgrades. Click below to test drive the 2 Series Active Tourer for yourself.

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer features an impressive interior based on the interior concept of the BMW iX. Arguably the most exciting interior feature is the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8 operating system. Along with a ‘floating’ armrest with integrated control panel which reduces the overall number of buttons. The ‘floating’ armrest also provides a airy feeling with lots of storage such as a large cubby hole and cup holders below the armrest.

The 2 Series Active Tourer comfortably seats five adults, whilst the newly developed multi-adjustable seats give greater long-distance comfort. As with the exterior the M Sport trim upgrades the interior with sports seats, M Sport steering wheel, contrast stitching and aluminium look trim.

Boot capacity is 470l-1,455l depending on the configuration of the rear seats which can be moved and folded individually. An automatic powered tailgate comes as standard, whilst an electronically operated trailer tow hitch can be ordered as an option. Click below to test drive the 2 Series Active Tourer for yourself.

The New BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Debuts Previewing the All-New 2023 MINI Countryman

cruise control bmw active tourer

Let’s get this out of the way. The 2023 MINI Countryman will not look like what you see here. However it will be based on the same chassis, offer the same engines and come with the same technology as the all new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. In other words this is as good of a preview of the 2023 MINI Countryman as we will get until late next year when it debuts.

What we’re seeing here is the follow-up to the UKL2 platform called the FAAR. The biggest change over the UKL is that the FAAR was designed from the ground-up to accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and all electric power. The versatility of the platform is key as MINI (and BMW) will likely need to pivot to electrification quickly based on market and legislative pressures.

Now lets focus on what we see with this initial release of the (U06) 2 Series Active Tourer and how it will relate to the 2023 MINI Countryman. To start this is a MVP type of vehicle that doesn’t typically translate outside if Europe. However you can easily imagine a small crossover based on this chassis given the dimensions (which are slightly larger than the current Countryman).

2023 MINI Countryman

Engines, Electrification and Performance

From a performance perspective there are a few things that should directly correlate with the 2023 MINI Countryman. There are no clean-sheet designs in the internal combustion world these days and there’s no exception here. Every petrol powered engine is a revision of an existing one. So things will look familiar but numbers will rise slightly. The 1.5 three cylinder which will be rated at 137 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque and then there’s a series of 2.0 four cylinder with varying tunes; 170 hp and 206 ft-lbs and 218 hp and 265 ft-lbs. All petrol engines will get a 48 volt mild hybrid system and will be mated to a revised 7-speed dual clutch with an all new gear selector design. Unfortunately we expect the manual transmission to be eliminated from the Countryman line-up.

2023 MINI Countryman

We’ll also finally get the the highly anticipated 245 hp and 326 hp plug-in hybrid system – the latter could form the basis of the JCW Countryman. Also improved will be the electric only range which could be as high as 50 miles.

Bringing weight down will likely be an aluminum hood and other aluminum and composite components.

The suspension is also likely to be revised with a new adaptive that lower the ride height fifteen millimeters, giving the car a lower center of gravity and less roll in corners. Also new is a near actuator wheel slip limitation (say that three times) that should allow for improved traction, agility and stability.

Look for an all electric variant to eventually join both the BMW 2 Series AT and MINI Countryman.

Massive Leap in Technology & Infotainment

Here’s where things get really interesting. In the BMW version we’ll see the all-new BMW Operating System 8 debut. Note this is not called iDrive because the iDrive controller is gone in this application. We’d expect MINI to follow suit. In our minds it’s a step backwards given the data that points to a multi-function controller being safer to use while driving. And having tested the new BMW OS8 recently we can also say things have gotten much more complex in both functionality and usability.

2023 MINI Countryman

Yet MINI has a history of going their own way in terms of infotainment so we expect an in-car experience that feels more intuitive and much more MINI. It’s unclear if MINI will carry over the two large screens seen above.

2023 MINI Countryman

Part of this massive upgrade is an expansion of driver assistance systems that are typically only see in much larger cars. With the optional Driving Assistant Professional package, Active Cruise Control can be used at speeds up to 130mph, with Steering and Lane Control Assistant helping drivers to maintain their current course with subtle steering corrections.

There’s also a larger HUD as well as augmented reality within the center screen. And as expected all of this will be updated quarterly with remote software updates. Expect all of this tech on the Countryman moving forward.

2023 MINI Countryman Availability

We don’t have hard data yet but we believe we’ll see the next generation MINI Countryman debut sometime in early 2023 likely as a 2024 model in the US. Also coming will be a Clubman replacement which will likely be based on the same technology and both smaller and larger crossovers rumored.

OFFICIAL RELEASE

BMW has unveiled the completely reengineered BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, offering a host of new features to create an even more tempting proposition in the premium compact segment. The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer boasts significant advances in all key areas and comes with an array of innovations previously reserved for the brand’s larger, more expensive models. Notably, it marks the debut of the BMW Operating System 8 and the new generation of the BMW iDrive control system with BMW Curved Display in a compact-class BMW. Until now the advanced system has only featured in the fully-electric BMW iX and BMW i4. Likewise, the range of driver assistance systems specified as standard or available as options sets a new benchmark both for the BMW model line-up and the sector. The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer’s all-new architecture is designed to accommodate both electrified drive systems and conventional engines. New engines, the second generation of 48V mild hybrid technology from BMW, the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission fitted as standard in all model variants, and extensively updated chassis technology take both efficiency and agility to new heights. Customers can initially choose from two petrol engines and one diesel, with the range set to expand from summer 2022 with the addition of two plug-in hybrid models equipped with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology for a significantly extended electric range. A choice of Sport, Luxury and M Sport variants, plus the availability of extensive individualisation options, ensure the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will appeal to a wide number of drivers. Its contemporary style, interior packaging, advanced technology and efficient drivetrains are destined to continue the original’s popularity: the first-generation model sold more than 430,000 units with, significantly, around 80 per cent of sales to customers who were new to the BMW brand. It will be produced at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Careful selection of materials optimises sustainability in the manufacture of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and ensures a high degree of recyclability at the end of its life. The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will be priced from £30,265 and is due for launch and first UK deliveries in March 2022. Sporting elegance expressed in a new style with increased presence  At the front of the car is the iconic BMW kidney grille, which has a radar sensor for the optional driver assistance systems integrated into the central section. The addition of full LED headlights as standard adds to the front end’s fresh look. A new interpretation of the distinctive light graphic divides the headlights into three clusters for low beam, high beam and daytime driving light, the latter also performing the role of turn signal indicators. Adaptive LED Headlights, available as an option (or standard on the M Sport models), include a cornering light function, non-dazzling matrix high beam, urban lights, a motorway beam pattern and bad weather light. When viewed from the side, two precisely drawn character lines underscore the car’s surfaces. The upward tick, the forward-leaning BMW kidney grille, raked A-pillars, stretched side window graphic and slim C-pillars not only increase the appeal but improve all-round visibility. The rear of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer features slim light units with LED technology for all light functions, arranged – if the optional Adaptive LED Headlights are specified – in a striking L shape. The new model is larger than its predecessor – by 32mm in length, 24mm in width, and 21mm in height. While the wheelbase is unchanged at 2,670mm, its track widths have been increased by 25mm at the front and 26mm at the back. An intelligent mix of materials minimises the body’s weight while enhancing rigidity and crash safety. The aluminium bonnet reduces weight at the front while lightweight plastic supports for the doors and lightweight forged wheels bring further weight savings. Optimised aerodynamic properties and acoustic comfort Aerodynamic optimisation brings benefits for both driving dynamics and efficiency. Measures undertaken to channel the flow of air around the car include an active air-flap control system for the BMW kidney grille and the addition of aerodynamic body aids, while a virtually fully sealed underbody with air guides and integrated exhaust tailpipes contribute to the car’s low drag coefficient of just 0.26 on some models. Wind noise has also been reduced and a new engine and transmission mounting improves vibration isolation, particularly when starting and stopping the engine. Sport, Luxury and M Sport models The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will be offered in Sport, Luxury and M Sport specification. Sport includes 17-inch alloy wheels, Sport seats with anthracite cloth upholstery, LED headlights, high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, and Parking Assistance with reversing camera and Park Distance Control as standard. Luxury cars feature 17-inch V-Spoke alloy wheels, Aluminium exterior trim, Vernasca leather upholstery, and heated front seats. The M Sport package introduces a distinctive front apron design, 18-inch Bi-colour alloy wheels, Adaptive M Sport suspension, Adaptive LED headlights, folding exterior mirrors, Sport seats with Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery, Luxury Instrument Panel, heated seats, Comfort Access, and wireless charging. Large selection of exterior colour shades and light-alloy wheels Two non-metallic and nine metallic paint finishes are available for the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, including the new Sparkling Copper Grey metallic. 17-inch light-alloy wheels are fitted as standard to Sport and Luxury models, with additional18- and 19-inch wheels as options. Progressive premium ambience for the interior The interior of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been completely redesigned. Taking its cues from the BMW iX, the BMW Curved Display – with its frameless glass surface angled towards the driver – brings a modern highlight to the cabin, as well as enhancing the spacious and open feeling of the cabin. Five interior trim variants, including the new Aluminium Hexacube and open-pore fine eucalyptus wood, enable owners to individualise their car. The newly designed control panel contains the redesigned gear selector, Start/Stop button, volume control, and buttons to activate the parking brake, My Modes, Park Assist and vehicle settings. The front area of the centre console serves as a smartphone tray with wireless charging an option, or standard for M Sport models.     The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer enjoys increased headroom, shoulder room and elbow room in both rows of seats compared to its predecessor. Rear seat passengers also enjoy a noticeable increase in kneeroom over the previous model. Newly-developed seats provide improved long-distance comfort and enhanced lateral support. Anthracite cloth upholstery is standard on Sport models with perforated Sensatec as an option. Vernasca leather and Alcantara/Sensatec with blue stitching are featured on Luxury and M Sport models respectively. Seat heating can be specified as an option for Sport models, as can 6-way electric adjustment with memory, lumbar support and massage function for all models. ISOFIX child safety seat fasteners are integrated into the rear outer seats, and the 40:20:40 split rear backrests can be folded down to expand boot capacity. The backrest angle can be adjusted separately, allowing the boot capacity to grow by up to 90 litres, while the forward/back adjustment allows up to 13cm of travel. Load capacity can be expanded from 470 to 1,455 litres (BMW 218d Active Tourer) or from 415 to 1,405 litres (BMW 220i Active Tourer, BMW 223i Active Tourer). The boot of the plug-in hybrid model holds up to 1,370 litres of cargo. Automatic tailgate operation comes as standard, while the optional Comfort Access (standard for M Sport) adds hands-free opening and closing. A Sport steering wheel is standard, while the M Sport specification includes an M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, joined by an anthracite M headliner, Sensatec/Alcantara sport seats, M pedals and an M logo in the information display. A host of further options allow owners to individualise the premium interior to their own tastes and requirements, including an electric panoramic roof with a new multi-layer roller blind cover and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon Sound System. New engines, seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission as standard, 48V mild hybrid technology, plus two plug-in hybrid models Driving pleasure, reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions are key features of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, with petrol and diesel engines taken from the latest generation of the BMW Group’s EfficientDynamics engine family. A more powerful version of 48V mild hybrid technology makes its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, with two plug-in hybrid variants to follow. All engines are married to a new seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission as standard. Petrol engines with optimised fuel consumption and emission levels Two latest-generation petrol engines will be available from launch, starting with a new 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit. Its output of 156hp is assisted by a 19hp electric motor for a combined output of 170hp and peak torque of 280Nm. As a result, the new BMW 220i Active Tourer accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit powering the BMW 223i Active Tourer develops 218hp (204hp plus 19hp) and 360Nm. It sprints from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds, yet emits just 137-149g/km and achieves 42.8-47.1mpg.

Standard: seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is the first to feature a new version of the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. The latest generation of BMW’s automatic transmission features all-electric actuation, a wider gear spread, better shift quality and higher internal efficiency. It also offers a gear selection strategy adapted to the route profile and now includes a coasting function in all My Modes options. When the engine is switched off, the transmission now automatically shifts into the P position.

Debut for new 48V mild hybrid technology Mild hybrid technology has enabled the BMW 223i and 220i Active Tourer models to deliver improved driving dynamics and optimised efficiency. The 48V electric motor acts as a starter generator and power booster for the engine and is now integrated into the automatic transmission. It delivers an extra 19hp when pulling away from a standstill, or during mid-range acceleration. The starter generator enhances the smoothness of the Auto Start Stop function, with the energy required stored in a 48V battery located underneath the boot, charged by recuperation during overrun and braking.

Two plug-in hybrid models added to the range Plug-in hybrid technology is expected to join the range from summer 2022 with the BMW 230e xDrive and 225e xDrive Active Tourer. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology consists of a current-excited electric motor installed in a single housing along with the power electronics and transmission plus the latest battery and charging technology. In both models, the electric motor acts on the rear wheels while a three-cylinder petrol engine drives the front wheels. With the aid of an intelligent powertrain management system, this results in all-wheel drive that delivers exceptional sportiness, directional stability and traction in all driving situations.

Maximum output is 326hp (150hp plus 177hp) for the BMW 230e xDrive Active Tourer and 245hp (136hp plus 109hp) for the BMW 225e xDrive Active Tourer. Maximum charging capacity is up from 3.7kW to 7.4kW, meaning that a full charge can be delivered in around 2.5 hours, or just under 8 hours via a conventional household socket. Electric range has also been increased and is now up to 49 miles based on the WLTP cycle.

Great to drive and comfortable, whatever the situation The chassis of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been engineered to combine driving pleasure and ride comfort. All front-end components have been re-developed almost from scratch to give the car better turn-in and optimised steering feel, while highlights of the rear include a bespoke modular three-link axle with relocated springs and dampers that free up more interior space.

Adaptive M suspension with mechanically controlled adjustable dampers is standard on M Sport models. The package brings a 15mm drop in the vehicle’s ride height (except plug-in hybrid models) and includes M Sport steering with a more direct rack ratio.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for extremely quick, precise response The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer now comes with near-actuator wheel slip limitation to maximise the car’s agility. This traction control system is integrated into the engine management, eliminating the long signal paths to the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and allowing corrective inputs to be applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems, ensuring optimum traction even on slippery roads and during acceleration.

The functions provided by the DSC system include not only anti-lock braking (ABS) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), but also a variety of stabilising functions and the drive-off assistant. The Performance Control function further increases agility by varying torque to the front wheels.

Integrated braking system optimises handling characteristics The braking system in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is unique in its segment and delivers outstanding stopping power and reliable pedal feel. This system brings together brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered using an electric actuator that generates pressure more dynamically and ensures faster and more precise interventions by the DSC.

Driver assistance systems Comfort and safety in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer are enhanced by the largest selection of automated assistance functions ever offered in a compact BMW. These functions can be improved or expanded by means of Remote Software Upgrades and Functions on Demand.

The right speed for every situation – automatically Automatic Speed Limit Assist controls the car’s speed by maintaining the desired safe distance from vehicles in front and observing speed restrictions along the route. It takes into account speed limits detected by the Speed Limit Info system or by using data from the navigation system and, with the system enabled, the maximum permitted speed is automatically adopted.

The route monitoring function uses the navigation system’s map to look ahead and reduce the car’s speed when approaching a corner, roundabout, junction or an exit. The system also adjusts the speed as required before entering built-up areas.

Cruise Control with brake function and manual Speed Limit Assist as standard Cruise Control with brake function is fitted as standard. A manual Speed Limit Assist function is also available, allowing the driver to import the speed limit registered by the Speed Limit Info system including no-overtaking indicator – another standard feature – as the new set speed.

The optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function can maintain the preferred speed (operational between 19-112mph) while also keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead by using sensor data from the cameras and radar.

Front-collision warning and Lane Departure Warning are also standard, with the former now able to react to oncoming traffic.

The complete package: Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assistant With the optional Driving Assistant Professional package, Active Cruise Control can be used at speeds up to 130mph, with Steering and Lane Control Assistant helping drivers to maintain their current course with subtle steering corrections. Active Navigation, meanwhile, helps the driver to keep to the route calculated by the navigation system on multi-lane roads.

Emergency Lane Assistant (in selected European countries including the UK) and Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection are also included, while Road Priority Warning, Wrong-way Warning and Front-crossing traffic Warning help to further prevent collisions. Exit Warning activates visible and acoustic signals if a vehicle or cyclist is approaching and there is a risk of collision on either side of the vehicle.

Providing the help required with parking and manoeuvring: Reversing Assist Camera, Reversing Assistant, Parking Assistant Active Park Distance Control (PDC) uses visual and acoustic alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles and includes a Reversing Assist Camera as standard.

The latest version of the Parking Assistant is also standard and helps the driver to park in spaces parallel or perpendicular to the road. Instead of just using other vehicles to help it select a parking space, the system is now also able to use the kerb as a guide. Parking Assistant can now be used both to enter and exit spaces and as well as steering, it also carries out the acceleration, braking and gear changes required.

Reversing Assistant, meanwhile, offers the option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-storey car parks.

The optional Parking Assistant Plus incorporates Surround View, Panorama View and 3D View to create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

BMW Drive Recorder is available on cars with Parking Assistant Plus and uses the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video all around the vehicle, up to 60 seconds in length, for later playback or export via the USB interface. In the event of a collision, up to 20 seconds of video taken both before and after the impact (40 seconds in total) are stored.

The new BMW iDrive and innovative digital services The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is the first premium compact model to be equipped with the most recent incarnation of the BMW iDrive display and operating system. Boasting new-generation BMW Operating System 8 software along with powerful connectivity and data processing, it takes interaction between driver and vehicle to another level.

The user experience is underpinned by the seamless interaction between the BMW Curved Display, voice control, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and the optional BMW Head-Up Display. The new display grouping and the expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant mean the new BMW iDrive has been geared towards interaction using touch and natural language. As a result, steps previously carried out with the BMW Controller can now be performed more easily and intuitively using the touchscreen, voice control or the buttons on the steering wheel.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics The BMW Curved Display fitted as standard in the new 2 Series Active Tourer is formed by a 10.25-inch information display and a control display of 10.7 inches. The screens are housed together behind a glass surface that curves towards the driver, so they merge into a single fully digital, high-resolution unit.

The BMW Curved Display’s graphics and menu structure have been designed to have a smartphone-style appearance. The layout in the centre of the display can be customised to suit the driving situation and personal preferences, while the arrangement of widgets on the home screen provides a simple overview of the menu options.

The automatic climate control is operated by voice control or the touchscreen. Controls for adjusting the temperature on the driver and front passenger side are shown permanently, while airflow, air distribution and the seat heating function can be controlled by calling up the climate control menu.

Personalised driving experience with the new My Modes Drivers of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer have a choice of PERSONAL, SPORT and EFFICIENT My Modes, each activating specific settings for the powertrain and steering, the style of the readouts on the BMW Curved Display and the interior lighting.

Fast, accurate, informative: the BMW Maps navigation system The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, which is part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus, offers enhanced performance and accuracy along with a simplified method of destination entry. The new-generation navigation system enables fast route calculation, carried out dynamically and based on real-time traffic data. The arrival time is calculated using an anticipatory method which factors in the usual traffic levels along the entire route.

With Connected Parking, BMW Maps is also able to provide assistance when searching for a parking space close to the destination.

Precision navigating with Augmented View The new optional Augmented View function supplements the navigation system’s map view with a live video stream from the driver’s perspective shown on the control display and augmented by, for instance, an animated directional arrow to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gaining additional skills. Spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or operate the optional panoramic glass roof, for instance. The system is also capable of recognising routines and proactively suggesting that the driver automates them, for example, if you have to scan an ID badge upon arriving at work at a similar time each day, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will recommend automating the driver window lowering.

Interior camera for snapshots; glancing inside the car using the My BMW App The new overhead interior camera can be used by the car’s occupants to take snapshots during the journey. Pictures can be shared by simply scanning a QR code in the control display with any smartphone connected to the car via Wi-Fi.

Customers are also able to have pictures from the interior camera sent to their smartphone using the My BMW App’s remote function if they wish to glance inside the car to check whether bags or other items have been left there, for example. The interior camera is also activated when the Remote Theft Recorder is triggered.

Personalisation using the BMW ID With the new BMW iDrive, customers benefit from greater personalisation thanks to BMW ID. This is used for securely storing personalised settings and transferring them between vehicles with a PIN code for security. Scanning a QR code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID on a smartphone, and if the user already has a BMW ID, this will be automatically imported into the car via the app.

The BMW ID can be created and activated in vehicles with BMW Operating System 8 or BMW Operating System 7. Once imported, the driver will receive a personal greeting that will include their customised profile image. At the same time, personal settings for seat position, exterior mirrors, navigation system, driver assistance functions, display layouts, shortcuts and favourites as well as infotainment system settings will be imported automatically. Personalised suggestions from the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are also stored in the BMW ID, together with individually selected wake words and privacy settings.

Smartphone linking and integration of third-party services Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are integrated wirelessly as standard, allowing customers to access digital services they use on their smartphones such as voice assistants, map apps, music streaming and messaging services. Information from the apps can be viewed both in the control display and in the instrument cluster or optional Head-Up Display.

The My BMW App is available in more than 40 countries for both iOS and Android operating systems and can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. It acts as a universal interface to the car, providing information on the vehicle’s status at any time, enabling (depending on equipment) remote operation of functions such as vehicle location, door locking, Remote 3D View and, on plug-in hybrid models, the auxiliary climate control system.

The optional BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer with their Apple iPhone via NFC technology, making a conventional car key superfluous. The car owner can share access with up to five other users and can create a configuration for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more.

Always up to the minute: Remote Software Upgrades for over-the-air updates The Remote Software Upgrades function keeps the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer up to date with the latest software, offering new services and improved vehicle functions. All updates can be downloaded over the air, on a smartphone via the My BMW App, or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card.

5 things you need to know about the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

5 things you need to know about the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

This is what you need to know about bmw’s latest family car.

An MPV might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of BMW, but since 2014 this firm has been showing that spacious cars can still be stylish, upmarket and good to drive.

Those are traits BMW has carried over to its new second-generation 2 Series Active Tourer, which is just reaching showrooms, with the German firm hoping it continues to be a popular addition to its range.

It brings with it a range of advancements too. Here are five things you need to know about the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

Bold new design

cruise control bmw active tourer

BMW has been making its car designs even bolder in recent years, and the 2 Series Active Tourer is one of its most striking yet. Featuring a large version of the iconic BMW kidney grille, the new model also comes with sharp LED headlights as standard.

Some of its design is also inspired by the brand’s flagship iX electric SUV, particularly the slim rear lights and three-quarter section. All of this shows it’s possible for an MPV to still look the part.

Gets BMW’s latest iDrive media system

cruise control bmw active tourer

This latest 2 Series Active Tourer makes some pretty big advances where technology is concerned, and possibly the most important new feature is its new iDrive system. It’s only the third model in BMW’s range to come with the system, and the other two have been pricey electric cars.

Running on BMW Operating System 8, it offers some of the sharpest in-car graphics of any car, and a broad range of connected functions. It also uses the smart new ‘BMW Curved Display’ as standard, including a 10.25-inch digital dial display and 10.7-inch touchscreen into one main panel, and really helps to give the 2 Series a particularly high-end and modern feel.

More spacious and practical than before

cruise control bmw active tourer

However, BMW hasn’t forgotten about the need to be practical, as this remains arguably the most important attribute in a car of this type. Throughout the interior there is a lot of room for passengers, with occupants now getting more headroom and kneeroom than before.

As standard it comes with individually folding rear seats, while these can slide too, should you need more or less boot or rear seat space. The boot is now 90 litres larger than before – now measuring up to 470 litres with the rear bench upright, or 1,455 litres with them folded. An electric boot is also fitted across the range.

Broad range of engines available – with plug-in hybrids to follow

cruise control bmw active tourer

At launch BMW offers three engine options – two petrol mild-hybrids (220i and 223i), as well as an efficient 218d diesel that can return up to 59mpg. All engines deliver strong acceleration for their class, while a seven-speed automatic transmission is standard on all versions too.

BMW will also launch a pair of new plug-in hybrids – the 225e xDrive and 230e xDrive – over the coming months, which not only pack more power than before, but also a larger battery. In fact, the German firm says they’re now capable of up to 49 miles from a charge, giving scope for some impressively low running costs.

Top-notch safety tech available

cruise control bmw active tourer

Even as standard the 2 Series Active Tourer gets a decent amount of safety kit, including autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assist.

But if you want all the bells and whistles, it’s recommended that you venture to the options list, where a whole range of high-tech assistance features are on offer. Highlights include adaptive cruise control with lane control assistant, along with self-parking functionality.

DIY Guide-Retrofitting Dynamic Cruise Control on F45 and F46

  • Add to quote

After struggling to find information on retrofitting and coding dynamic cruise control on my 2 Series Active Tourer F45, I have eventually managed to retrofit and code the dynamic cruise control with braking function to my car. Since I found extensive information in the forums about coding in general, I wrote up a DIY Guide to share my experience. Here is the link for those who would like to retrofit cruise control on their F45 and F46 Active/Grand Tourer cars. https://www.dropbox.com/s/fln6jgy54...ntrol_Retrofit_Coding_DIY_Guide_Rev0.pdf?dl=0

Did you install the sensors and radar in the car? Your guide seems too simple for such a complicated system. Woukd u give us details of other hardware used?

Dynamic cruise control means it brakes to not go over the set speed ie going down hills or reducing the set speed with steering controls.this is not adaptive cruise control that matches the car in front as that requires the kafas camera at the very least.

Thanks Johag. I got mixed up with acc.

Moscow (RU), 3rd August 2013. Augusto Farfus (BR) and Bruno Spengler (CA) will start the first ever DTM race in Moscow (RU) from third and fourth on the grid. Farfus clocked the third fastest time of 58.677 seconds driving the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM in Q3 at the “Moscow Raceway”. Spengler was just behind him in fourth in the BMW Bank M3 DTM.

The fourth and decisive qualifying session had to be cancelled, as a flying ban issued at short notice meant the rescue helicopter no longer had permission to take off. Because of this, the result of the third qualifying session was used as the basis for assigning grid positions. The Q4 shoot-out had to be scrapped. Therefore, pole position went to Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller (DE).

Dirk Werner (DE) could also be happy with his good result. Driving the SAMSUNG BMW M3 DTM, Werner actually clocked the fastest time of Q2. In the third session he narrowly missed out on the top four by less than one tenth of a second, and will start Sunday’s race from sixth on the grid. Joey Hand (US) qualified 15th in the BMW M3 DTM.

For four BMW drivers qualifying was over after the first session. Timo Glock (DE) starts from 17th, but was just 0.039 seconds away from progressing to Q2 in the DEUTSCHE POST BMW M3 DTM. Martin Tomczyk (DE, BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM), Marco Wittmann (DE, Ice-Watch BMW M3 DTM) and Andy Priaulx (GB, Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M3 DTM) were 19th, 20th and 21st respectively.

The race gets underway at 15:30 local time (12:30 BST) on Sunday, with 74 laps around the “Moscow Raceway” awaiting the eight BMW DTM drivers.

Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director):

“That was an unusual qualifying on our debut here in Russia. It goes without saying we would also have liked to have seen Q4 happening, with two of our drivers fighting for pole position. However, we are basically happy with the result. After the problems we encountered during the last couple of qualifyings, we have put ourselves in a good position here for Sunday. Augusto Farfus, Bruno Spengler and Dirk Werner recorded some good laps. Some of our BMW M3 DTMs were also knocked out too early on in the proceedings. We will have to take a closer look at that. Congratulations to Audi and Mike Rockenfeller. We are now looking forward to an exciting race tomorrow.”

Augusto Farfus (car number 7, BMW Team RBM, 3rd):

“I am happy to be in third, especially after my two last race weekends when we could not perform as we wanted. In practice we tried several directions, exploring the best way to set the car up for the track. Then after free practice we made some very big changes to the car, and it paid off. I think tomorrow we just have to get a clean start. I am sure the first lap will be very crowded, as the track is not that wide.”

Bruno Spengler (car number 1, BMW Team Schnitzer, 4th):

“It is a strange feeling not to have been able to drive in Q4. It is a fundamental part of race weekends, and who knows where we would have ended up. As it is, we start from fourth. That was not an easy day for us, as we did not find the ideal set-up. Despite this, the second row of the grid is still a good starting position, from which anything is possible. We battled hard today – and we will do the same again tomorrow.”

Dirk Werner (car number 2, BMW Team Schnitzer, 6th):

“I guess you could say I have mixed feelings. I don’t know whether I should be pleased or frustrated. That is the first time I have made it through to Q3 this season. Sixth is a good starting position, and with Bruno Spengler in fourth we have achieved a good result with BMW Team Schnitzer. However, I could have done even better. I clocked the fastest time of all in Q2. It was then tricky to put together a flying lap in the third session. I was not far from finishing further up the field. Generally speaking, however, we are in a very good position for tomorrow.”

Joey Hand (car number 8, BMW Team RBM, 15th):

“The car wasn’t that bad earlier today, but I just couldn’t get anything out of it in qualifying. It was really weird, as I don't know what is going on. We always run well in practice, but just can’t qualify that well. That is really frustrating, especially as I have a fast car in the race every week. It is not over though, as I came out of turn one in 22nd at the Norising and still fought back to finish seventh.”

Timo Glock (car number 22, BMW Team MTEK, 17th):

“Generally speaking, qualifying did not turn out as we had hoped for us. My car was far better than in the morning’s free practice, but we could do no better than 17th. I was very unlucky, as I kept getting stuck in traffic and never really had a clear lap. This made it impossible to clock a better time.”

Martin Tomczyk (car number 15, BMW Team RMG, 19th):

“Unfortunately this qualifying was once again very disappointing for me. We struggled in the free practice and that carried through to qualifying. We once again failed to get the most out of the tyres.”

Marco Wittmann (car number 21, BMW Team MTEK, 20th):

“It was a disappointing qualifying for us. We are really struggling at the moment. I cannot say why exactly. We don’t have a lot of time for practice, so everything has to come together right from the start. You hardly have any time to make any significant modifications to the car. We’ll see what we can do from 20th in tomorrow’s race. It will be extremely difficult though.”

Andy Priaulx (car number 16, BMW Team RMG, 21st):

“I am happy overall with my car and the way it feels, but we just weren’t quick enough. There is nothing more I could have done with the grip. I wasn’t really any quicker on fresh tyres than I was on the old ones. That was a disappointing qualifying for me.”
