By Lauren Leazenby

The Subaru Crosstrek gets some subtle updates for 2021, including styling changes and additional driver-assistance technology — but for the price, this popular entry-level SUV is still missing a few key features.

The Crosstrek is a small yet practical SUV. By our comparison testing, it’s the No. 2 affordable small SUV on the market , second only to a brand-new entry to the category, the 2021 Kia Seltos. Related to the Impreza sedan and hatchback, the Crosstrek has a lot going for it; in fact, we ranked this current-generation Crosstrek the top subcompact SUV in 2018 . But lately, other competitors in the class are offering cutting-edge technology and more cargo space, among other features.

Need to know everything about the latest Crosstrek? Click the related link above for our full review. But for the quick hits (and misses), below is what we like and what we don’t about the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek:

Things We Like

1. comfort orientation.

With softly tuned springs and shock absorbers, the Crosstrek offers a pretty comfortable ride for a subcompact SUV. The suspension provides high-speed isolation that’s comparable to vehicles in the larger compact class of SUVs.

2. Available Safety Features

Hands-on lane-centering steering is newly available in the Crosstrek, and it’s included in Subaru’s EyeSight bundle of safety and driver-assist tech, which comes on almost all variants of the car. It works alongside adaptive cruise control, and both features work from highway speeds down to a stop. Other available safety technologies include reverse automatic braking and curve-adaptive headlights.

3. Room for Riders

The front seats are large and comfortable. Ample headroom and legroom leave enough space for adult passengers in the backseat, and the backseat fits even the bulkiest child-safety seats , which are easy to install thanks to easily accessible Latch anchors and seat belt buckles.

4. Quality Cabin Materials

Interior styling may not be to everyone’s liking, but at least Subaru didn’t skimp on the interior, something other manufacturers tend to do with their entry-level SUVs. Most of the Crosstrek’s cheap plastics are down below arm level, and the points where your elbows or arms touch are well padded.

5. Top-Rated Visibility

Of all the small SUVs we tested, the Crosstrek scored best on visibility. Large windows and small roof pillars make for a relatively unobstructed view all around.

Things We Don’t

1. low driving position.

Don’t be fooled by the 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the driving position of the Crosstrek seems really low to the ground — s o low, in fact, that it feels more like riding in a car than an SUV.

subaru crosstrek 2021 21 front row interior seats jpg

Most continuously variable automatic transmissions have outgrown a lot of the issues they’ve had in years past, but not so with the one in the Crosstrek. You can get adequate acceleration off the line, but it’s slow to raise rpm if you need to accelerate while already in motion.

3. Outdated Tech

The user interface on the 8-inch touchscreen in our test car — an optional unit, supplanting the standard 6.5-inch screen — is a bit laggy, and the display itself is somewhat low-resolution. The steering wheel is cluttered with far too many buttons, including drive-mode selectors. What’s more, all your connections will be wired: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but only the wired versions, not the wireless integration proliferating industrywide . Wireless phone charging isn’t available, either.

4. Stingy on Cargo Space

There’s plenty of room for people in the Crosstrek, but not as much space for their stuff. By Cars.com measurements , the SUV has 13.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the backseat — not much considering the Kia Seltos boasts 16.2 cubic feet.

5. Adaptive Cruise Control

Although the available adaptive cruise control works down to a stop, it can only hold the vehicle at a stop for a few seconds before the driver has to step on the brake. Most vehicles with such functionality these days have an electric parking brake that can engage automatically, thus holding the car at a stop for longer periods; the Crosstrek, on the other hand, has an old-school mechanical handbrake.

Subaru Crosstrek

What's new for 2024.

It might look very similar to the 2023 Crosstrek , but the Crosstrek undergoes a complete redesign for 2024, kicking off the start of the small crossover's third generation. This year marks the first time Subaru offers the Crosstrek in Wilderness guise. The Crosstrek Wilderness boasts a lifted suspension with 9.3 inches of ground clearance, more rugged exterior design features, and all-terrain tires.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek starts at $26,540 and goes up to $33,290 depending on the trim and options.

Although Subaru hasn't confirmed, we are expecting to see a plug-in hybrid variant in the lineup as well, but until that model launches, we think the Sport trim will be the one to buy as it unlocks access to the more powerful engine.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2024 Crosstrek comes with a 152-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder as standard, but Sport, Wilderness, and Limited models come with a more powerful 182-hp 2.5-liter four. We expect a 148-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain to join the lineup soon too. None of those have delivered what we'd consider conspicuous performance in the past, and the 2024 model is similarly poky. While Subaru offered the outgoing Crosstrek with either a six-speed stick or a CVT, the automaker sadly dropped the manual this time around. As on most other Subaru models, all-wheel drive is standard. The Crosstrek's chassis isn't taking cues from Subaru's WRX sports sedan. It's a soft-riding crossover, and while its cornering capabilities are likely far more than its intended buyer will need, it doesn't offer the same level of driving enjoyment as the Mazda CX-30 or the Volkswagen Taos . The Crosstrek can probably do more off-roading than those crossovers though, as it boasts at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance and comes with hill-descent control and hill-start assist features. The Wilderness trim offers 9.3 inches of ground clearance and wears more aggressive all-terrain tires. During our initial test drive, we sampled some of the Crosstrek's capabilities on some rutted two-tracks and light off-road trails in Joshua Tree National Park outside Palm Springs, California.

0–60-MPH Times

When we tested a Limited model with the larger of the two four-cylinder engines and recorded a rather lazy 8.1-second time to 60 mph . The Wilderness model, with its all-terrain tires and rugged styling accouterment, needed half a second more to hit 60 mph. the Premium we tested with the 152-hp four was even slower, needing 9.5 seconds to hit 60 mph .

2024 subaru crosstrek 25l

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

According to the EPA, the Crosstrek is rated for up to 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway depending on the configuration. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, the Crosstrek with the base engine managed an impressive 36 mpg, but we also got 35 mpg with the more powerful engine, so there's not much penalty for going with the 2.5-liter variant. The Wilderness model managed only 27 mpg in the same test. For more information about the Crosstrek's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

While the new Crosstrek is about as spacious and cargo-friendly as the outgoing model, Subaru has improved the seat design to be more comfortable and has added additional sound-deadening materials to damp noises and quell vibrations. The interior remains overtly utilitarian and buyers seeking a more designer look will feel shortchanged by the Subaru's straightforward style. Leather upholstery is optional, but most trims come with cloth upholstery, and higher-end models will have patterned inserts with silver stitching. The front doors have deep pockets for storing water bottles and other loose items, and the cargo area offers 20 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 55 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

2024 subaru crosstrek 25l

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2024 Crosstrek will offer the same 11.6-inch infotainment display that's found in other Subaru models such as the Outback station wagon and the WRX sports sedan , but it's not standard. A smaller 7.0-inch display is what comes on the base model, but both screens offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The 2024 Crosstrek offers Subaru's latest EyeSight driver-assistance feature bundle as standard. For more information about the Crosstrek's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Subaru's warranty coverage is exactly in line with that of most of its competitors. As with many rival hybrids, the plug-in Crosstrek comes with an extra policy to cover that car's expensive battery-electric components.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • Hybrid-component warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced pricing on the 2021 Crosstrek compact SUV offering an all-new Sport trim and available 182-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine. The 2021 Crosstrek Sport is the most powerful and fun-to-drive Crosstrek to date and it arrives at retailers later this summer. New for all Crosstreks this year are redesigned wheels and a redesigned front fascia that includes a new bumper and grille. Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control is standard on trims with EyeSight/CVT and the 2.5-liter engine is now available on Sport and Limited models.   With a starting price of just $22,245, an increase of only $100 from the 2020 model year, all Crosstrek trim levels are equipped with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Active Torque Vectoring as standard, an advantage over other compact SUVs that make all-wheel drive an extra-cost option. Two Power Levels for 2021 The 2021 Crosstrek Sport and Crosstrek Limited come standard with the 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine that produces 182 hp and 176 lb.-ft. of torque and is paired with a Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission). This combination allows the Sport and Limited trim levels to achieve an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 city / 34 highway / 29 combined MPG.  The 2021 Crosstrek Base and Premium trims continue to use the efficient 2.0-liter 4-cylinder BOXER engine that delivers 152-hp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. Base and Premium are offered with either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or optional Lineartronic CVT. The CVT models achieve EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 city / 33 highway / 30 combined MPG. The 6-speed manual models are rated at 22 city / 29 highway / 25 combined MPG. New Crosstrek Sport Amps Up SUV Style and Performance The distinctive and more powerful new Crosstrek Sport starts at $26,495 and is the only Crosstrek trim level to feature the dual-function X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control, with SNOW/DIRT and DEEP SNOW/MUD settings to optimize AWD performance for difficult weather or road conditions. All other Crosstrek trim levels equipped with CVT feature standard X-MODE with Hill Descent Control.  The Sport trim offers unique exterior trim elements that include specific wheel arch moldings, Sport-type 17-inch alloy wheels with dark gray finish, and gunmetal finish for the front grille, side mirrors and badges. The Sport interior add new water-repellant, durable StarTex® upholstery with yellow stitching to the seating. Also, yellow stitching has been added to the simulated leather door trim panel armrests, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift boot, multifunction display visor, and center console storage box lid. Carpeted floormats feature the Sport logo and yellow stitching. The new Sport is available in seven exterior colors, including the new Plasma Yellow Pearl and Horizon Blue Pearl.  The Sport is further distinguished by its cabin with gunmetal and simulated carbon fiber interior trim accents, a high-grade gauge cluster with color LCD and yellow metallic finish trim rings, and a high-power LED rear gate light. An option package includes a power moonroof; Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert; and 8.0-inch STARLINK Multimedia Plus System. The MSRP is $1,600. Enhanced Safety for 2021 Crosstrek models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT, whether standard or as an option, come with award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. The EyeSight system has been enhanced for 2021 with new Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering. The suite of driver assist technologies also includes Automatic Pre-Collision Braking; Pre-Collision Throttle Management; Lane Departure Prevention; and Lead Vehicle Start Alert.  The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek, when equipped with EyeSight, received the highest possible rating of “Superior” for front crash prevention by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All 2021 Crosstrek trim levels include seven airbags: driver and front passenger frontal airbags, side curtain airbags and side pelvis/torso airbags, as well as a driver’s knee airbag. Crosstrek has been named an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK for nine years running (2012–2020). The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Limited equipped with steering responsive headlights received the 2020 IIHS TSP award. The Rear Seat Reminder (with CVT-equipped models) is designed to help prevent child or pet entrapment by alerting the driver to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle. Subaru SUV Value The 2021 Crosstrek combines a bold SUV design with 17-inch alloy wheels in black with machine finish, roof rails, black side cladding, and a gloss black rear roof spoiler. The rugged look is matched by a highly capable chassis with 8.7-inches of ground clearance for versatility in both city and off-road driving.  The 2021 Crosstrek has a starting price of $22,245 and comes with a long roster of standard features, including automatic climate control; SUBARU STARLINK™ 6.5-inch Multimedia system with touchscreen; Android™ Auto and Apple CarPlay™; power windows with auto up/auto down on both driver and passenger sides; 60/40-split fold-down rear seat; power door locks and side mirrors; multifunction display with fuel economy information; tilt and telescoping steering column; keyless entry; security system with engine immobilizer; carpeted floor mats; and more. 5 Things To Love About the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport

By Craig Fitzgerald

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: JULY 2023

There are many things to love about the 2024 Crosstek Sport – we’ve narrowed it to five.

cruise control subaru crosstrek

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport is a great option for prospective overlanders, slotted between the Premium and Limited trims. Here are five things to love about this iteration of the Crosstrek.

A closeup of the mpg display on the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport, which shows an average mpg of 30.5.

Fuel Economy

We spent a week in the Crosstrek Sport, driving it from the suburbs of Massachusetts to the coast of southern Maine.

Over the course of that week, we traversed back roads, city streets and the Maine Turnpike at the legal speed of 70 mph. In that mixed driving, we observed 30.5 mpg. As the disclaimer says, “Your mileage may vary.” But considering the EPA’s fueleconomy.gov shows the 2024 Crosstrek delivering 29 mpg in combined driving and a maximum fuel economy of 34 mpg in highway testing, 1 30.5 mpg is close to what most people will experience until the temperature drops significantly in the winter.

What’s doubly nice is the relatively large 16.6-gallon tank. Factoring that with the fuel economy, you can expect to drive more than 500 miles before you need to fill up.

An interior view of the cargo storage area at the back of the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport. Inside, there are several 8-foot 1x5s between the front door and side passenger seat. The cargo area is filled with tools and construction materials.

Cargo Versatility

With the seats configured for passengers, the Crosstrek Sport offers 19.9 cubic feet of cargo volume. Folding the 60/40-split rear seatback down opens the entire cargo volume to 54.7 cubic feet.

But what does that mean in terms of stuff you can stash back there? A medium-sized suitcase typically carries about 2.4 cubic feet. Depending on the shape, you should easily fit six medium-sized suitcases in the cargo area with all the seats deployed and still have enough room for soft cargo on top.

We were also impressed with the versatility of the space. With one side of the rear seatback folded down, we were able to slip four 8-foot 1x5s in the side of the cargo area between the front door and the side of the passenger seat so that the rear gate closed completely.

Demonstration of EyeSight Driver Assist Technology at work.

Standard EyeSight ® 2 Driver Assist Technology

Previous generations of Crosstrek offered EyeSight 2 Driver Assist Technology , but the 2024 model makes the technology standard across the board, regardless of trim level. That also includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, Pre-Collision Braking 3 and Throttle Management, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keep Assist.

It’s hard to evaluate things like Pre-Collision Braking 3 without coming close to a crash, but we had plenty of time to test the Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist. All of it was a boon on the highway portions of our trip, maintaining a legal speed and a safe following distance to the car in front of us, even in heavy Memorial Day weekend traffic through the Hampton, New Hampshire, tolls.

With Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, you set a speed and it will follow the car in front at a predetermined distance. When that car slows down, you slow at the same rate, all the way down to a dead stop. If something abrupt happens in front of you, the Crosstrek Sport emits both visual and audible alerts that you should brake immediately. If you don’t, Pre-Collision Braking will.

Under-the-hood view of a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport engine

The 182-hp Boxer Engine

With its 2.5-liter Boxer Engine, the Crosstrek Sport adds 30 hp over the 2.0-liter engine of the Base and Premium trim , and you’ll notice it. Climbing hills in Maine and running through the fast sections of highway between Maine and Massachusetts, the Crosstrek Sport provided decent acceleration and good climbing power.

There’s an off-ramp in Eliot, Maine, at Route 236 that’s been under construction for quite a while. You come to a full stop, and it’s challenging to find a safe spot to pull out. Thanks to a constant stream of cars coming, when your slot opens, you need to be decisive. The Crosstrek Sport moved out into the lane with no drama, ramping us up to 60 as the Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) found the optimal ratios for acceleration.

A 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport in Alpine Green is driving through a wet, muddy road in a forested area, splashing up water.

Dual Function X-MODE ®

Even the base trim level features X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, a confidence-inspiring feature especially when rolling down a steep descent where the ground underfoot is loose with stones or slick mud. But the Crosstrek Sport goes one better with dual-function X-MODE, including modes for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud.

Snow/Dirt mode minimizes wheelspin and alters the Symmetrical AWD system’s torque split to provide the most traction available. Deep Snow/Mud mode allows for some moderate wheelspin, which helps to eject mud and snow from the tire treads so that the tires can dig down to a surface they can grip.

With its standard All-Weather Package, Sport Cloth upholstery, sound-insulating windshield and wireless phone charger, the Crosstrek Sport is going to be an all-season favorite among commuters and daily drivers. And the 700-pound static roof capacity will make any Crosstrek trim level a great platform for camping and outdoor adventures.

I have a 2021 Crosstrek Sport with a 2" lift .. BFG Ko2's . skid plate and a few other things. Just drove back from Christmas in Omaha and came back to Tucson. Had lots of wind and bad weather and while driving on the I-10 at night with strong winds a tumbleweed blew across the road and my Trek almost stood on it's nose causing the semi following me to have to dynamite his brakes!!! I got flashed a few times and I'm sure I got the finger .. wish I could have told him it was the car .. not me! This is the 4th time this has happened! I am now getting scared to drive my Trek for fear of getting read ended. Can the Adaptive cruise be turned off .. and the eye sight system in general .. can it be turned off? The safety systems are being designed for inattentive drivers .. I am not an inattentive driver .. and nobody should be. From day #5 of owning my Trek I learned to turn of the lane centering function as it almost took me into a concrete barrier .. all on it's own.. I had both hands on the wheel because I was coming into the construction zone and I had to aggressively cut the wheel otherwise I would have totalled the car .. it was that close. I went to the dealership and reported this to my salesman .. for some reason I thought he might help. Nothing came of it. Just checked .. there is a second class action suit against Subaru's Eye site system .. guess I better check it out. Part of my career I was a Smith System Drivers training instructor In my estimation the Subaru Eyesite system is dangerous. I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport with 270K miles on it. In the past 10 years I have not had one close call with it. It also still has the same windshield .. on the 4th with the Trek!

You definitely have to be attentive with the eyesight on. it doesn't always recognize lines. I find that there are a couple exits off the highway on my daily commute where the eyesight will start taking me off the highway even when there are dotted white lines. I keep the lane assist off when not using cruise as I don't like where it positions me in the lane, I find I am always fighting it. I don't have to worry about tumbleweeds here, just deer, coyotes, racoons, fox, occasional bear. lol Sounds like the truck was following you too close as well, not your fault. No assisted driving is going to be able to tell if the object you are going to hit is going to be soft or hard and whether it will cause damage. They go mostly by size.

cruise control subaru crosstrek

Sorry to hear about this happening. You're probably about to get a bunch of people defending the system, but I'm not one of them. I'm glad the manual trans version I went with doesnt come with any advanced driving tech.

cruise control subaru crosstrek

so you have no experience to share. i see

cruise control subaru crosstrek

The ONLY reason I went with a Manual was to avoid eyesight

my first crosstrek did not have eyesight but my current one does. much prefer eyesight

@sonny1597 Everything you mentioned can be turned off. You may have to do it every time you start the car. See owner's manual for details.

All the auto drive stuff certainly comes with its own baggage. Turn off pre-collision braking to avoid the tumbleweed incident..

cruise control subaru crosstrek

Never thought of tumbleweeds affecting the eyesight. I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm in Eastern OR! I have a reflective corner sign on my way home that has set if off a couple times. Both times I had my brights on so now I turn them off coming into that turn.

@sonny1597 very simple to turn off when you are attacked by tumbleweeds

cruise control subaru crosstrek

FWIW, I've experienced the emergency braking with tumbleweeds in the desert. Calling it dangerous is, quite frankly, ridiculous. It's performing as it was designed to do. It could have been an animal or a small child or a big rock that just came down onto the trail. It will do a far better job than any human could in avoiding crashing into or killing things...

cruise control subaru crosstrek

Weird, I've driven thru tumbleweeds in between Phoenix and Tucson without eyesight braking. One of them was really big, probably 36" diameter, and it exploded/disintegrated when I hit it. Honestly this reminds me of when people used to complain about antilock brakes or when they complain about auto stop start or the 2.0 engine. It's not dangerous, it's an aspect of the car. The driver should be driving the car with these aspects in mind and if the driver can't drive it safely then they shouldn't drive it. It wouldn't make sense to sue because your manual car can stall if you bungle the clutch engagement leading to an unsafe situation. You need to just not drive a manual car if that's an issue. You wouldn't sue because driving with a trailer is dangerous. You need to drive like you're towing a trailer, or if you can't do that safely then you need to not drive with a trailer.

Just returning from AZ, I can confirm truck drivers drive much faster and follow closely on the highways between Phoenix, Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon. Getting passed by a big rig coming down the grade on I-17 at 80mph+ is pretty wild. If you're against the pre-collision braking you can always turn it off.

cruise control subaru crosstrek

Not speaking to anyone individually, here, but I'll say that even the best of drivers is going to have the occasional brain fart while driving, whether they admit it or not ... and if a vehicle's automatic assist feature is able to save their hide when that happens, it's a good thing for everybody who's out on the road. I'm really glad the tech exists, and is becoming more prevalent. Having the tech doesn't mean that a driver can relax their guard, though ... there are Darwin Award Tesla drivers proving that fact every day.

I have a '19 and notice that it does that mostly when I am driving slower than usual or around long curves. It's definitely amazing 90% of the time, but I have gotten used to it's quirks and can anticipate them more. However, it has happened a few times on the expressway. One thing I try to remember is constantly adjusting the distance when it senses the car in front. And if I see traffic coming to a slowdown (like approaching downtown Chicago from the south) I will preemptively slow the cruise down so that it starts a slow deceleration vs a more abrupt one. Hope that helps a little. I was hopefully the system was a little smoother with the new refresh. But seems like it's similar. The switches for all the nannies are on the left below the vent and there are two above where the map lights are. The only one I turn off is traction control for winter hooning.

Not sure why you'd need to constantly adjust the distance. We have traffic here, too, and two bars is my comfort zone.

I do that too. It might be completely unnecessary but it makes me feel better I guess. I like to watch for brake lights several cars in front of me and preemptively coast or increase the distance.

It's actually pretty useful to have the adaptive cruise control's following distance be adjustable. On rural, less-trafficked roads you want a longer following distance, both because it's safer and because it doesn't make you look like a tailgater. On a busy highway, though, that distance would get filled with another vehicle pretty quickly, so things will flow smoother with a shorter following distance.

i was late to get the memo about adjusting following distance, which makes cruise control far more usable

I guess my comfortable following distance leaves enough of a gap for an ahole to barge in... 🤷‍♀️
