8 Cruises Offer Respite From the Winter Blahs

Among the ships sailing this season is the new Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship. But you can go smaller on itineraries that range from the Caribbean to the South Pacific.

As winter sets in, cruise lines are offering a variety of warm weather escapes to the Caribbean, Mexico and far-flung destinations in the South Pacific and the Persian Gulf. This winter will see the launches of new ships and itineraries aimed at attracting a broad demographic of cruisers, particularly young first-timers.

Here are some of the most anticipated trips to sunny spots.

Icon of the Seas

Eastern caribbean and the bahamas.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest new cruise ship, with a capacity to carry more than 7,000 passengers, is scheduled to set sail in January, with a seven-night eastern Caribbean and Coco Cay cruise departing from Miami. While the 250,800-ton ship makes stops at St. Kitts, St. Thomas and Coco Cay (Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas), it may be hard to choose between land excursions and the countless onboard attractions, from the largest water park at sea to an immersive entertainment space where athletes will perform acrobatics under a cascading waterfall. With eight different “neighborhoods” — including “ Thrill Island” and “the Hideaway” — the cruise line says it will offer guests “everything they have ever loved about every vacation — all rolled into one.” Twenty-eight accommodation categories include family-friendly cabins that sleep four people or more, and a special three-story townhouse complete with an en-suite slide and a cinema room. Despite its size and features, Royal Caribbean says that the ship is the company’s most sustainable ship to date, powered by liquefied natural gas and energy-efficient technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The new luxury cruise line Explora Journeys invites passengers to discover an “ocean state of mind,” characterized by “calm, unity, elegance and joy.” The Explora I, which set sail on her maiden voyage in August and has a capacity of up to 922 passengers, resembles a superyacht with the interior of a high-end boutique hotel. It is decked out with more than 400 oceanfront suites, four swimming pools and nine culinary experiences. The all-inclusive voyages aim to bridge the gap between luxury and lifestyle travel, targeting people who enjoy high-end resorts but may not have previously considered ocean cruising. From December, the Explora I will set sail through warm destinations in the Caribbean and America, offering excursions to rainforests, cocoa plantations, pastel-hued villages and coral reefs. The “Yachtsman’s Caribbean of Remote Harborages” journey, one of many trips offered this winter, departs Bridgetown, Barbados, in January for a six-night sailing that will take guests to lesser-known hideaways that are usually reserved for yachts in St. Lucia, Deshaies, Guadeloupe, and St. Barts, before ending in San Juan, P. R.

Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship will set out from Galveston, Texas, in December, its first seven-day sailing through the western Caribbean, with stops in Mahogany Bay, Honduras, and Costa Naya and Cozumel in Mexico. The itinerary also includes two “fun days at sea” for guests to enjoy the ship’s attractions, which include a roller coaster and a three-story atrium full of dining options. The ship has 20 restaurants and 13 entertainment spaces in its “six zones of fun,” with activities for children, including a high ropes course, water park and mini golf course.

Norwegian Pride of America

While most Hawaii cruise itineraries last at least 14 days, Norwegian’s Hawaii Island tour visits the four main islands in just seven days. There are no days at sea, allowing guests more time to explore Honolulu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai with excursions that include tours of lava fields and zip-lining through tropical rainforests. The Pride of America, which has a capacity of 2,186 passengers, underwent a multi-million-dollar refurbishment in 2016. All the rooms were refurbished, the decks and entertainment spaces remodeled and all major features, including the spa and lounge areas, were upgraded. The ship has a range of specialty restaurants and a center dedicated to Hawaiian culture.

Azamara Quest

Azamara is a small-ship cruise line that focuses on longer port stops, overnight stays and unique shore excursions. From January, the Quest, an intimate and stylish midsize ship with a capacity of 700 passengers, will set sail from Buenos Aires, and make stops at Montevideo, Uruguay, and the seaside resort town of Punta del Este, Uruguay, famous for its beaches, high-end restaurants and nightlife. Before cruising down the Beagle Channel, which is filled with marine life, including sea lions and penguins, the ship will make a stop at the Falkland Islands where guests will meet some of its 3,000 inhabitants. Then, en route to the Chilean Fjords, the Quest will stop at Puerto Chacabuco, in southern Chile, offering treks by foot and horseback through forests, rivers, waterfalls and wooded mountains. There are also opportunities to explore the snowcapped volcanoes of Puerto Montt, the capital of Chile’s Lake District, before disembarking on day 16 in San Antonio, Chile.

Celebrity Solstice

While Celebrity just launched its newest ship, the Ascent, with itineraries in the Caribbean, the line’s Asia cruises are still among the most popular winter escapes for those willing to travel farther afield. Setting out from Hong Kong, the Celebrity Solstice’s 12-night cruise will sail to Hanoi, Vietnam, making an overnight stop at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay, to allow time to trek around the mountains of Sapa before exploring the rich culture of the country’s capital. The next stop is Hue and Da Nang, filled with temples, pagodas, palaces and tombs. During the second half of the sailing, the ship makes an overnight stop in Bangkok, followed by a visit to the tropical island of Koh Samui. The cruise ends in Singapore, which, beyond its skyscrapers and megamalls, has a rich cultural heritage and one of the best airports in the world from which to fly back home.

Oceania Regatta

With so much to explore in the Pacific Ocean, it can be worth taking a longer cruise to cover more ground. The 36-day voyage on the Oceania Regatta, offers just that, embarking from Auckland with multiple stops at the country’s North and South islands, to Australia’s east coast and finishing in the sparkling waters of French Polynesia. The Regatta is a small, 684-passenger luxury ship that features a swimming pool, casino and spa. It has a fine-dining culinary program and aims to offer a refined cruise experience for people looking to escape the crowds.

MSC Opera and Virtuosa

While several cruise lines have canceled or altered itineraries in the Middle East because of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, cruises to the Emirates, which are relatively far from the conflict, have not been affected. MSC offers a range of itineraries and a selection of three-, five- or seven-night sailings on its Opera and Virtuosa ships. From skyscrapers, luxury shopping and glitzy nightlife to turquoise waters and warm sand deserts, there are many offerings for young cruisers, families and couples. On the Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar seven-night cruise, the ships stop at Sir Bani Yas Island, known for its wildlife reserve, bird sanctuary and crystal-clear waters. The island offers a range of activities, including safaris, snorkeling, kayaking or mountain biking. There is also a children’s water park and play area. The MSC Opera is a midsize ship with a 2,150-passenger capacity, and underwent a two-year refurbishment program in 2014, adding more than 90 rooms with balconies, a new spa and a water spray park. The Virtuosa is one of MSC’s newest and largest ships, complete with a “Himalayan Bridge” that spans more than than 260 feet, an aqua park and a Formula One simulator.

Caribbean Weather in January: Best Islands to Visit

Caribbean weather in January has average high temperatures in the mid 80s Fahrenheit for southern islands and low 80s for most northern ones.

Rainfall is low to moderate for most major destinations. The best islands to visit during the month are in the western and southern Caribbean. For the warmest temperatures, the farthest south, the better. In contrast, the Bahamas, which are close to Florida, have average daytime temperatures in the upper 70s Fahrenheit and are five to 10 degrees cooler than most Caribbean islands.

January is a good month for anyone who likes their Caribbean climate with a little less heat, lower chances of rain and maximum comfort while shopping or doing other land activities.

It also is one of the most popular months of the year to visit for northerners who want to get away from cold and snow.

Caribbean Water Temperatures in January

Caribbean water temperatures stay between the daytime and nighttime air temperatures for each destination. For most islands, that means an average water temperature in the low to mid 70s Fahrenheit.

The cooler daytime weather in combination with strong trade winds also means water temperatures are not always warm enough for swimming this time of the year, especially in the mornings.

Our winter visit to Cancun found the water too chilly for swimming. Trade winds create a wind chill that makes swimming even more uncomfortable at times. Water temperatures are much more comfortable at Aruba, Curacao, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and other southern islands that have warmer air temperatures.

The best time to go swimming is in the afternoon when the sun has heated up the water to a more comfortable level. Vacationers might want to shop or take part in land excursions and activities in the mornings. They can go to the beaches in the warmer afternoons.

Western Caribbean Weather in January

Air temperatures: Western Caribbean weather in January is warm but not unbearably hot like the 90-degree heat of the summer.

As a result, cruises are especially popular from January through April because of the moderate temperatures and the lower levels of rain along the the Central American coast. January is an especially dry time of year for most western Caribbean destinations.

The four most popular islands are Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Roatan. All of them become one of the hottest regions of the Caribbean during the summer.

In January, their peak temperatures average in the low 80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius, according to historical records from government meteorological agencies.

Belize, Costa Rica and Panama, which are less popular western Caribbean destinations, also have peak temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius.

Rainfall: What matters even more for these Central American cruise stops is the fact that their average rainfall is much lower in January than most other months of the year.

Costa Rica in particular has a high risk of rain in January, but it is mostly in the mountainous interior. Belize also has higher rainfall in the interior for the same reasons.

The western islands usually average about two to three inches of rain in January, so the odds of a good day are high.

Eastern Caribbean Weather in January

Air temperatures: In the eastern Caribbean, January temperatures range from the high 80s Fahrenheit in St. Lucia and St. Thomas to the low 80s for most other islands.

The eastern Caribbean stretches more north and south than the western Caribbean, and as a result the northern destinations are cooler during January.

The Bahamas aren’t geographically part of the Caribbean Sea because they lie in the western Atlantic. But they are lumped into the Caribbean region because they are islands and located close to the actual boundaries of the Caribbean.

They also are north enough to be much cooler than the other locations. January is a good month to visit there for golf and other land activities but not a good month for swimming and other water activities.

Turks and Caicos, which lies southeast of the Bahamas, is only slightly warmer. Once again, the water is less comfortable for anyone who likes sunning and swimming.

Go farther south to find warm daytime temperatures that average in the low to mid-80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius.

Rainfall: One thing that the Bahamas has in its favor during January is a low level of rainfall, which is another reason why it is a good month for land activities.

Other islands also do well including Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia and Trinidad.

Water temperatures: The farther south the better. Islands such as Aruba, Curacao, St. Lucia and Barbados are more likely to have water temperatures comfortable for swimming.

But as someone who visited Aruba in February, warmer water temperatures are not always a sure thing. On our visit, the water was too cool for swimming.

Alaska Cruise Weather in May

What is the best weather for an Alaska cruise? Temperatures can vary anywhere between 30 to 80 degrees throughout the summer travel months – inviting guests to layer on the sweaters and windbreakers as weather can be unpredictable. So, the best month to travel to the Great Land depends on what you want to do. For the fishing aficionado, consider May when king salmon reach their greatest appearance. If you prefer to explore the lush scenery by foot, wait until June when the sun has overcome the frosty terrain of the Inside Passage and trails are primed for adventures. What’s the Best Month to Cruise? Pros & Cons of Sailing Each Month of the Year

Let’s get one thing straight right at the start. There is no bad time to cruise . Whether you want to have a summer vacation or a winter getaway, the weather somewhere in the Caribbean is always warm and welcoming.

That said, with our experiences having sailed seemingly every month on the calendar, we have found there are definite advantages and disadvantages to sailing each month of the year. For example, cruises in August offer the ability to sail when the kids are out of school (meaning entire families can travel together). On the other hand, August is also notorious for hurricanes disrupting travel to Caribbean ports.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. No month is perfect. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget.

Taking a Cruise in January

Pros : We like sailing in January as one of the biggest advantages of cruising this time of year is price. During this time of year school is in session and many people are back at work after a holiday break. That means it’s difficult for many to cruise. Cruise lines typically have discounted rates to fill up the ship in January; the same cruise departing at the height of the busy summer can cost hundreds of dollars more than in January.

As well, when winter has gripped most of North America, the Caribbean still offers a warm getaway with lots of sunshine. It’s a welcome change from the snow and cold see in most areas.

Cons : If you are a family, it might be tough for you to take a January cruise. It will usually mean the kids have to skip a few days of school to take the trip. In addition, if you have to fly in for your cruise, there are chances of winter weather causing delays to your schedule. You’ll want to make sure you plan your flight to arrive the day before your cruise, just in case. 

As well, this time of year trips from the West Coast will still be cool and Alaskan cruises don’t start sailing until April/May.

Taking a Cruise in February

Pros : February offers the same advantages to sailing as you see in January. Fares are normally discounted, with the ability to save hundreds on a cruise by sailing in February versus the height of the summer season. It’s also cold in most of the United States and Canada, making a warm getaway awfully enticing.

Cons : Like January, you might find it difficult to take time off after the holidays to enjoy a cruise. Doing so means spending vacation days early in the year and/or having the kids miss school. There are also still strong snowstorms in many parts of North America during February, meaning it’s possible that getting to the port can be an adventure if you have to fly in for your cruise from a northern city. 

As well, even if sailing to the Caribbean, the pools and water on a ship may still be too cool to enjoy fully. Don’t plan on spending much time in the water in our experience.

Taking a Cruise in March

Pros : With warmer weather and Spring Break, a cruise is on many people’s minds come March. In fact, if you are a Spring Breaker, this is a great time to sail as a cruise offers an affordable getaway to the beach without having to worry about flights or hotel. Just hop on the ship and start your vacation.

As well, if you’re headed to the Caribbean, March can be warm — but not too warm compared to the heat of the summer months.

Cons : If you aren’t a Spring Break fan, then this might not be the best month to sail. Cruises — especially shorter trips (3-5 days) — will have a younger crowd and more of a party atmosphere. You’ll also see a spike in prices starting in mid-March as cruise lines raise prices for trips that coincide with Spring Break.

Taking a Cruise in April

Pros : April represents one of your last chances to get a deal on a cruise before the busy summer sailing season. Discounts and deals are still available up until about mid-May, giving you the chance to save a bundle on a trip compared to sailing just a month or two later. As well, the threat of snow is diminished in northern parts of the United States and hurricane season isn’t here yet for port cities. It’s hard to find better weather than what you get in April.

Cons : After Spring Break, it’s back to school and work for most people. That means many have a tough time taking a trip at this time a year. That’s unfortunate because April is the “Goldilocks” of cruise months for the Caribbean — it features affordable prices, good weather, and is before hurricane season gets cranked up, which always adds a wildcard to travel in the Caribbean.

Taking a Cruise in May

Pros : Heading into May, cruisers hitting the Caribbean can start to experience some warmer weather both at home and on their cruise. While the water and beach are typically warm enough for swimming and laying out even during the coldest winter months, it is a few degrees warmer in May, which can make it more inviting to hit the beach. For example, Cozumel’s average high in January is 83, compared to 91 degrees in May. If you’re the type who loves warm water, May is when things start to heat up.

Cons : If you wait until too late in the month, you’ll start to see higher prices for your cruise. The end of May marks the start of the summer cruising season, and fares start to jump up. One place where you can save? Cruises to Alaska typically start their season in May, and it’s the cheapest month to sail to that region . We’ve sailed Alaska this time of year and highly recommend it.

Taking a Cruise in June

Pros : If you want a summer getaway with warm weather and water, June is a great choice. Hurricane season starts June 1st, but it’s still rare that you’ll have a chance of a hurricane this early. Meanwhile, the Caribbean is starting to heat up so you can have a true beach summer vacation without worrying about it being too chilly either on the ship or in port. Also, with the kids out of school, you can take them on your trip without worrying about absences.

Cons : With schools out of session and the popular summer vacation season, fares spike for June and through the rest of summer. You’ll usually be paying more for the same cruise compared to taking it earlier in the year. As well, if you aren’t the type that likes to cruise with families on the ship, then keep in mind that summer months typically see an influx of kids.

Taking a Cruise in July

Pros : Like June, you’ll find warm and sunny days filling July. And with the kids out of classes, you’ll have the opportunity to sail without missing school, making it an ideal time to cruise if you are traveling with kids. While it is warm in the Caribbean, regular afternoon “pop-up” showers can help cool things off during the heat of the afternoon. This also represents the height of the Alaskan cruise season, offering the most options (albeit at higher prices) of the year.

Cons : The biggest negative with sailing in July is hot weather. On sunny days, it can get downright hot in many Caribbean ports. If you aren’t used to the heat and humidity, it can be draining. As well, you should start to look out for hurricanes and tropical storms during July — especially if traveling later in the month. While cruise ships will avoid any storms, they can be unpredictable and cause changes to your itinerary.

Also, just keep in mind that you should expect the highest cruise fares of the year during this time.

Taking a Cruise in August

Pros : Consider August the last hurrah if you want to be able to cruise with the kids out of school. While the weather is hot, being able to travel as a family without missing school days is the biggest draw of sailing in this month. If the kids don’t start back until September, then you can sometimes find deals late in the month that can save you considerably on your cruise fare.

Cons : Similar to July, you can run into weather issues in August. Specifically, the heat and humidity is at its worst in the Caribbean during August. While afternoon showers can cool things off, they are not a guarantee. You also have to start worrying seriously about hurricanes. Late August is reaching the peak of hurricane season. While the chances are low that your specific cruise will be hit by a storm (cruise lines steer clears of storms as much as possible), it could disrupt your trip if a hurricane hits a port of call.

Taking a Cruise in September

Pros : With the busy summer cruise season past, students back to school, and summer vacations in the rear view mirror, September offers a “shoulder” season of sorts. While the Caribbean is still warm — perfect for those that want to hit the beach and the water — cruise fares are heavily discounted versus the expensive summer months. In other words, you get the warm weather of the summer with the lower prices of the fall. As well, your cruise is likely to have fewer kids onboard. It’s also the last chance to sail Alaska for the season, when crowds are fewer and fares are generally cheaper.

Cons : September actually marks the peak of hurricane season. Historically, the first week of the month is the busiest for storms and then activity quickly drops off later in the month. Still, even if your ship isn’t directly impacted by a storm, it can cause issues at Caribbean ports.

Taking a Cruise in October

Pros : If you’re not wanting to deal with heat, then October is a great time to visit the Caribbean. While the humidity is always a factor, October sees the start of a cooling trend in the weather. As well, while hurricanes can occur in October, the season is largely over so you don’t have to worry about them disrupting your trip as much. Finally, cruise prices also fall during this time of year, meaning you can book a solid deal without spending a bundle.

Cons : It shouldn’t be a surprise that April and October are two months that we consider great times to sail. Like April, the biggest con is that it can be difficult for people with kids to travel without taking their children out of school for a few days. Apart from that, the month sees good weather and cheaper fares, and it’s before the harsh winter hits many places in the U.S. and Canada, disrupting air travel to the port or the weather in the port city.

Taking a Cruise in November

Pros : By the time November rolls around, people are starting to think of warmer weather, especially if you live in a cold area. Taking a trip during this month can lead you away from the cold and gray to the warm and blue. It’s also a great time to find cheap cruises, apart from trips that sail during the Thanksgiving holiday (which are more expensive).

Cons : Scheduling around the Thanksgiving holiday can be tough, and if you have to fly to your cruise during the busiest travel time in the United States, it can mean dealing with long lines and delays at airports. Apart from that, November is a great time to book a cruise with cheap deals and nice weather in the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Taking a Cruise in December

Pros : The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the absolute cheapest times to sail. With many people not looking to travel between these two major holidays, cruise lines slash fares. It’s not unusual to see a trip costing 50% less than a comparable trip during the summer. Needless to say, cruising in December is also a big draw for people wanting to get away from the snow and cold of many places in the north.

Cons : Trying to fit a cruise between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be tough for many schedules. And while many people take a cruise during Christmas itself, those trips are more expensive. If you are traveling by air, be ready for the possibility of delays due to weather and holiday travel crowds.

What Are the Least Expensive Months to Sail?

If you want to sail for cheap, then we suggest looking at months like January, February, April, May, September and October . We find that rates during these months tend to be less expensive than for the same cruise if headed to the Caribbean. During these times fewer people are traveling, leading to generally lower cruise fare.

If headed to Alaska, then the months are more limited. The season runs largely from May through September. In this case the ‘shoulder’ months of May and September offer the lowest prices.

So Which Month Is Best to Cruise?

As mentioned above, there is no “bad” time to sail. However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port . The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail.

The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

Transiting the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers, especially for history and engineering buffs. If you're considering this bucket-list sailing, you'll want to find the best time to cruise the Panama Canal, whether that be to find better weather, lower pricing or fewer crowds.

The Panama Canal cruise season peaks between October and April, outside of the rainy season that can start as early as mid-March and extend into the fall. With a tropical climate, this region is home to rainforests, incredible biodiversity, lush landscapes, abundant wildlife and beautiful beaches, but the weather can be wet at certain times of the year.

Panama Canal itineraries come in several flavors. One-way cruises sail between Florida and California, Washington or Canada; these complete a full transit of the canal. Partial-transit itineraries sail round-trip from Florida ports and only go through the locks on the Caribbean side. Some ships depart from or end in Panama or Costa Rica and feature itineraries that focus on the Pacific Coast of Central America or the Caribbean.

In addition to visiting Panama, many itineraries include ports of call in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia or Mexico, which can be the highlight of the trip, especially for outdoor enthusiasts.

It used to be that only smaller Panamax ships could squeeze through the locks of the Panama Canal. However, with the opening of a new set of locks in 2016, larger New-Panamax-sized ships can transit, as well. That means you take a Panama Canal cruise on a small-masted Windstar ship or luxury Silversea cruise or can sail on a megaship as large as the 1,094-foot-long and 136-foot-wide Norwegian Bliss.

Here, we look at Panama's peak cruise season month by month, so you can consider the weather, pricing and crowds to determine the best time to cruise through the Panama Canal.

Pros: October is one of the best months for cooler temperatures, lower fares and fewer crowds.

Cons: October is still the rainy season, and it's humid. It's also hurricane season in the Caribbean.

Ships: Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania, Hurtigruten Expeditions, Lindblad and luxury lines Scenic and Silversea offer sailings during the month.

October is a rainy month, but it's also one of the coolest months of the year, with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. The average year-round temperature in Panama is about 86 degrees, so it doesn't vary much during the year, but it's more humid in October with the wet weather. It's also possible to have hurricanes this time of year if you're cruising in the Caribbean.

For outdoor adventure seekers, it's too wet for hiking in the rainforests, but other activities benefit from the rainy season, including whitewater rafting. In Quepos, Costa Rica, Windstar Cruises offers rafting trips to the town of Santo Domingo, where you can take a float trip on the Savegre River. Experienced surfers can also check out the big swells on both coasts of the country.

If you have an extended stay in Panama City, consider a trip to the Archipelago de las Perlas (Pearl Islands) in southeastern Panama to view the humpback whales. It's a short flight to the islands, or you can travel by ferry to see the whales that are still in the waters around the archipelago after coming to breed in August and September. If traveling earlier in the month, you may also see nesting loggerheads and green turtles southeast of Panama City in Isla Canas (Cane Island) or Bocas del Toro.

Pros: November is one of the best months for lower cruise fares.

Cons: November is still the rainy season and the end of hurricane season. You can also expect some crowds in port with the national holidays.

Ships: Windstar, Star Clippers and Seabourn will also have vessels transiting the Panama Canal in November.

November can be rainy — and even the rainiest month of the wet season — with temperatures starting to warm closer to December. The month brings a mix of low-priced early-season fares but also several public holidays that bring crowds of both tourists and residents to attractions in places like Panama City and Boquete.

For a rainy-day excursion, ride the Panama Canal Railway, one of the world's great train rides. If you're in Panama City, plan an indoor excursion with a visit to the world's first museum dedicated to biodiversity, the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo.

You can celebrate Panama's Separation Day on Nov. 3 or Flag Day on Nov. 4. These holidays, along with a few others in November, feature parades, parties and other displays of national pride, so you can expect it to be busy in towns across the country.

Pros: December is the beginning of the dry season, so the weather will be drier and less humid.

Cons: The month is one of the busiest times for tourism, so you can expect to pay higher fares and have more crowds in port.

Ships: A few additional cruise lines offer Panama Canal crossings during December, including Celebrity, Carnival, Crystal and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

With drier weather and high temperatures hovering around 88 degrees, it's less humid in the region in December. However, it's the holiday season, so cruise fares and other costs, like hotels for pre- and post-cruise stays, will be more expensive if you travel this month. December is one of the peak tourism months in Panama, with Panamanians traveling for the holidays and visitors from North America and Europe escaping the cold weather at home.

December is the best month to plan excursions to places like Panama's rainforest and Chagres National Park to meet the indigenous Embrera people. You can also take an eco-cruise on Gatun Lake, which concludes with a visit to the Agua Clara Locks Visitor Center, where you'll learn about this engineering feat that connects two oceans. If you're comfortable exploring on your own, rent a car or hire a local guide to visit places like Soberania National Park.

Pros: January is regarded as one of the best months to visit Panama with the drier weather and high temperatures around the mid-80s. It's also less bustling with tourists than it is in December.

Cons: It's peak season on land and at sea, so hotel and cruise prices are high. Panama City will also be busy with the jazz festival mid-month.

Ships: Cunard, Azamara, Emerald Cruises and Tauck Tours (with a chartered Ponant yacht) enter the market in January.

January's dry weather makes the month the perfect time to explore Central America's national parks, jungles and tropical rainforests, including Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park and Curú Wildlife Refuge and Panama's Darien National Park. During your visit, be sure to look for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, blue-footed boobies, capybaras, crocodiles and even manatees on a jungle boat tour along the canal and into Gatun Lake.

If you're a jazz buff, the Panama Jazz Festival is held in Panama City in mid-January, January 16-21. The six-day event features hundreds of renowned jazz musicians from around the world with live performances, a gala evening and concerts. If you're embarking in Colon, Panama, you can fly into Panama City a few days early for the festivities. The distance between the two cities is less than 50 miles. Alternatively, linger in Panama after your cruise to attend the festival, or look for sailings with full-day stops in Panama City during the jazz festival.

Pros: February is the second-best month to cruise the Panama Canal, with optimal weather during the dry season.

Cons: It's still peak season with higher cruise fares and prices ashore — but there are fewer cruise lines in the region. Snowbirds are still avoiding the cold weather and snowstorms at home, so you can expect many tourists, especially in Panama City. Carnival typically occurs across the country in February, depending on when Easter falls that year, bringing crowds.

Ships: Ponant is the only new addition in the region, offering one sailing early in the month. The other cruise lines sailing the Panama Canal in February are Holland America, Oceania, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival, Lindblad, Tauck, Emerald and Windstar.

Take advantage of the final weeks of the dry season to book active outdoor adventure excursions like hiking, kayaking and zip lining. Another option is the Rainforest and Aerial Tram tour to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort in the 55,000-acre Soberania National Park. The tram climbs 280 feet through the dense jungle vegetation to reach the tree canopy above. During the ride to the top, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, sloths, butterflies, iguanas, toucans and frogs.

Carnival is a festival in mid-January in Panama City and other towns around the country. It's one of the biggest celebrations in Central America — even bigger than the Christmas holidays for most families, so you can expect crowds during that time.

Pros: March is the last month of the dry season, although the rains can start by midmonth during some years. You can expect pleasant weather, although it's quite warm, with temperatures reaching as high as the low 90s. You can also find late-season low fares on some of the larger ships.

Cons: It's still one of the busiest months for travel with the moderate weather.

Ships: New luxury line Explora Journeys joins the vessels in the region in March with an extended sailing that includes transiting the Panama Canal.

With the warmer temperatures, March is an ideal month to head to the beaches on one of the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of about 365 islands and cays off the Caribbean coast of Eastern Panama. Some cruise lines that visit the archipelago are Windstar, Star Clippers, Hapag-Lloyd and Ponant.

You can also look for excursions through the cruise line — or make independent arrangements — to go on an adventurous hike under the canopy of the rainforest, take a boat tour to explore the diverse flora and fauna along the canal or go windsurfing or sailboarding on Costa Rica's Lake Arenal with the Arenal Volcano as the backdrop. March is also the last month for surfing enthusiasts to hit the big waves on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Should Semana Santa (Holy Week, from Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday) fall in March, there will be more crowds nationwide in Panama with religious processions and reenactments, parades and other special events. Many venues and attractions may be closed on some days during the festivities.

Pros: April is one of the best months to look for lower late-season fares on the larger ships.

Cons: The weather may not be ideal. The high temperatures in Panama hit just below 90 degrees on most days of the month. Mid-April is also when the wet season typically begins, so you can expect high humidity and rain. It's also still a busy time with tourists, so the prices are high ashore. If Easter falls in April, you may have to contend with the crowds celebrating Holy Week during the festivities.

Ships: If you're interested in a sailing on a luxury cruise ship, Silversea is the only luxury line still in the region in April. For a cruise on a large ship, choose among itineraries on Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess.

With the high temperatures and humidity — and the threat of rain — you might want to take tours where you can easily escape from the heat and the showers. If you're in Panama City, visit the vibrant neighborhood of Casco Antiguo in the city's historic district.

Dating back to 1673, the UNESCO World Heritage Site features landmarks like the Panama National Theater and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary. You'll also find some of the city's best restaurants, beautiful squares and plazas and top-rated museums. If you've booked a pre- or post-cruise hotel in town, be sure to catch a sunset from one of the city's many rooftop bars.

Bottom line: The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

When to cruise the Panama Canal will depend on what's most important to you.

If having the best weather is your top priority, January, February and early March offer the best weather during the dry season with low humidity — but it's also the most expensive time to travel to the region. You can expect crowds, especially with the festivals during that time.

If you want the best pricing and fewer crowds, October and November are the rainy season, so the pricing will be lower — and you'll avoid the holiday crowds and high fares in December.

Late March and April also offer lower fares as it's the beginning of the rainy season, but you can expect crowds during the Holy Week festivities in the country.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Early 2023 Itineraries (January – May)

Today, Disney Cruise Line released Early 2023 itineraries with some familiar options as well as some itinerary gaps. In early 2023, Disney Cruise Line will return to top tropical destinations in the Bahamas – including Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay – as well as the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera, delighting Guests of all ages with one-of-a-kind vacations at sea. A variety of enchanting itineraries will set sail coast-to-coast from U.S. home ports including Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida; New Orleans; Galveston, Texas; and San Diego.

Today’s release extends the available sail dates through mid-2023, giving guests options for their future cruise credits and plan vacations more than one year out, as well as take advantage of opening day pricing for some of the new itineraries.

Castaway Club Members and select Disney Guests can take advantage of the opportunity to book early 2023 itineraries before they go on sale to the general public on October 21, 2021.

Although the dates were announced today, general booking will not open until Thursday, October 24th . However, there will be a tiered booking period beginning Monday.

• Thursday October 14th – Platinum Members, Golden Oak Club Members and Club 33 Members
• Friday October 15th – Gold Castaway Club members
• Monday October 18th – Silver Members, Disney Vacation Club Members and Adventures by Disney Insiders

Disney Magic Early 2023 Sailings

The Disney Magic will continue sailing a mix of Western Caribbean cruise from Galveston Texas in early 2023 before reposting to New Orleans for a series of additional Western Caribbean cruises. The Disney Magic will reposition from Galveston to New Orleans with crew only on February 7, 2023. This will be the Disney Magic’s first season in New Orleans. The sail date range from January 1, 2023 to March 27, 2023. The Disney Magic does not have any sailings available beginning April 1, 2023.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Return to Favorite Tropical Destinations in the Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico in Early 2023

In early 2023, Disney Cruise Line will return to top tropical destinations in the Bahamas – including Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay – as well as the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera, delighting Guests of all ages with one-of-a-kind vacations at sea. A variety of enchanting itineraries will set sail coast-to-coast from U.S. home ports including Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida; New Orleans; Galveston, Texas; and San Diego.

The booking cadence is as follows:

• 14 – Bookings open for Disney Cruise Line Platinum Members, Golden Oak Club Members and Club 33 Members.
• 15 – Bookings open for Disney Cruise Line Gold Members.
• 18 – Bookings open for Disney Cruise Line Silver Members, Disney Vacation Club Members and Adventures by Disney Insiders.
• 21 – Bookings open for all Guests.

Vacations to the Bahamas and Caribbean from Florida Disney Cruise Line will create even more fun in the sun like never before with an array of departures from the Sunshine State in early 2023, visiting tropical destinations throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean. Two ships will sail from Port Canaveral near Orlando, Florida, and a third ship will depart from Miami. Every cruise from Florida includes a visit to Disney’s private island oasis, Castaway Cay.

Departing from Port Canaveral, the Disney Wish will sail into 2023 with three- and four-night voyages to Nassau, Bahamas and Castaway Cay. Cruises aboard Disney’s newest ship combine enchanting new entertainment and storytelling, with the unparalleled service and magical moments that guests love when sailing with Disney.

Also from Port Canaveral, the Disney Fantasy will begin the year with seven-night sailings to several favorite destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Plus, one unique eight-night sailing includes two days in beautiful Bermuda, where Guests can sunbathe on the island’s pristine pink sand beaches, enjoy exhilarating water sports or explore the island’s spectacular underground Crystal Caves.

From Miami, the Disney Dream will embark on an assortment of four- and five-night cruises to locales including Grand Cayman, Nassau, Castaway Cay and Cozumel, Mexico. Even more private island enjoyment is on deck with one special five-night cruise that includes two stops at Castaway Cay.

On all Florida departures, Guests can delight in a voyage that provides something for every member of the family, combining the adventure and relaxation of tropical destinations, the ease and indulgence of an ocean cruise, and the world-class entertainment and service of a Disney vacation.

Tropical Escapes from Texas and New Orleans In January and February, the Disney Magic will sail from Galveston, Texas, on a variety of four-, five-, six- and seven-night itineraries to the Bahamas and Western Caribbean. Tropical ports of call on these sailings include Grand Cayman as well as Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico.

In February and March, the Disney Magic is “going down the bayou” for the first time during a debut season in New Orleans. Departing from the heart of The Big Easy, along the mighty Mississippi River, the four-, five- and six-night sailings will call on the tropical destinations of Grand Cayman and Cozumel. 

Before or after their Disney cruise, Guests can venture into the Crescent City to savor the distinct flavors of famous New Orleans cuisine, revel in the sweet melodies of world-renowned jazz music and recognize the iconic sights and sounds that inspired the beloved animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”

All early 2023 Disney Magic voyages include two or three days at sea to enjoy the unlimited fun, entertainment, relaxation and memories onboard.

Baja Peninsula Getaways from San Diego  The Disney Wonder will return to the West Coast, sailing from San Diego in April and May. Cruises to Baja, Mexico and the Mexican Riviera will transport Guests to sunny shores filled with vibrant culture, glittering sand beaches, active outdoor adventures and exciting water activities.

Sailings from San Diego will range in length from three to seven nights. Some sailings to the Baja peninsula will call on the charming coastal city of Ensenada, known for its turquoise blue water and rugged mountainous terrain. Many departures will include a visit to Cabo San Lucas, a favorite destination with dramatic rock formations and white sand beaches.

A seven-night itinerary will sail to Mazatlan, the “Pearl of the Pacific,” filled with breathtaking natural wonders, thriving culture and colorful history, and to Puerto Vallarta, the beautiful seaside escape nestled along the curve of the Banderas Bay and bordered by the stunning Sierra Madre mountains.

There are some interesting changes.

Scott – I noticed the official announcement doesn’t show a Panama Canal cruise but your daily schedule for the Wonder does show it. Is this your assumption or is this official from Disney Cruise Line?

I’m wondering the same thing. I’ve been assuming and planning on a west-bound PC cruise for 2023.

Ignore my comment about the Panama Canal cruise. I was looking at 2022 – not 2023. I would still like to know if the Wonder will be stationed on the West Coast. Beginning to look like it.

Where the heck is the Wonder from November 2022 to Late April 2023??? West Coast? Hawaii? Asia? Australia? Major refurb?

Does anyone know why the Wonder is not showing in the new plans at all? I am trying to book my New Years 2023 cruise and had to settle on the Magic as a placeholder because Wonder is not in the list. And she is not in the list until April. Any ideas?

I’m curious as to why the Magic is taking over for the Wonder sailing out of New Orleans, especially since the Wonder has the French Quarter Lounge and Tiana’s. The Wonder is the perfect match for New Orleans. I also can’t wait to find out what is going on with the Wonder between Oct 2022 and April 2023. I’m hoping she’ll be in San Diego for Christmas 2022.

Magic is also taking over the sailing out of Galveston in November of 2022.

FYI. The Disney cruise site has these future sailings available to view under the booking process.

Has there been an extension to the expiration of future cruise credits, or is the deadline to use that still September 30, 2022? Really hoping it gets bumped out, as I’m not sure if we’ll be able to use ours by then, and it would be great to be able to use it for one of these 2023 cruises.

I called DCL and they said they have not extended past Sept. 30, 2022

It is disappointing that the old ships are not returning to Florida. All the short getaway experiences from Florida are all the same now. I miss when the Wonder still rotated in at Port Canaveral.

Ones it appear that there will be a proble filling the ships with the mandate in place?

I was hoping the Wish would have a different itinerary than the Bahamas

I think that they should have put the Magic on the West Coast and kept the Wonder in New Orleans and Galveston and then brought the Wonder to Europe in the summer. I, too, miss seeing one of the Classic ships come to Port Canaveral once in awhile. I also agree with you Lindsay about the Wish itinerary.

The Wonder was refitted over the years with the Alaskan sailings in mind.

I wonder if there will be an announcement about the Wonder staying on the West Coast permanently with occasional transits of the Panama Canal. Give the opportunity to do TransPacific cruises to Australia, New Zealand and even Tokyo/Shanghai/Hong Kong. Maybe even a full World Cruise??

Darren, that’s exactly what I am hoping for. With a fleet about to almost double in size, DCL must be looking into expanding their service areas. If the Wonder stays full time in the Pacific, the sky is the limit: Hawaii, Tokyo Disney back to back, Tahiti. Yum! I can only imagine!

I hope and keep looking out for a cruise to Hawaii from Vancouver. We’re from the UK, and would love to take my family and parents on that cruise!!

Does anyone know when the 2023 transatlantic cruises will go on sale?

The EBTA is normally announced with the Summer sailings. Based on the historical release cycle , I am expecting Summer 2023 to be announced sometime between February and March.

Silver is up 13.80% since the beginning of the year, as of 9 a.m. The 52-week high reached $29.80 on April 12, 2024, and the 52-week low dropped to $20.69 on October 2, 2023.

The spot price of silver represents the current market rate at which silver can be exchanged and immediately delivered. But similar to gold, silver prices can be provided in troy ounces, grams and kilograms. Notably, a troy ounce, the standard unit for quoting silver prices, is slightly heavier than a standard ounce, with one troy ounce equaling 31.103 grams or 1.097 ounces.

The worldwide silver spot price calculation is a complex process, influenced by several factors and majorly impacted by futures contracts rather than physical silver trading.

Silver is one of four main precious metals investors can trade via physical bullion , exchange-traded products or futures contracts. Gold, palladium and platinum spot prices are also updated 24/7 in a variety of currencies.

Gold/silver ratio

The gold/silver ratio is the price of an ounce of gold divided by the price of silver per ounce. As of today, the gold/silver price ratio is 85.33.

The gold/silver ratio is significant because it is a tool for comparing the relative values of these two precious metals over time. This ratio helps investors and traders understand how the value of gold and silver fluctuates compared to each other.

The high ratio suggests that gold is more expensive than silver, indicating a market preference for gold as a haven, which can mean economic uncertainty. Conversely, a lower ratio implies that silver is gaining value or that gold is becoming less expensive.

This ratio can also indicate potential buying opportunities. For instance, if the ratio is historically high, some investors might see it as a cue to buy silver, expecting the ratio to revert to a long-term average.

The gold/silver ratio is also used to gauge economic health. Shifts in the ratio reflect changes in market sentiment and economic conditions.

Silver price history

Silver prices fluctuate based on multiple variables, such as supply and demand, geopolitical events, currency strength, economic data, and changes in investment trends. The historical spot price of silver has thus been characterized by high volatility, with significant fluctuations over the decades.

In the mid-1970s, silver was valued at less than $10 per ounce. But it saw a sharp rise toward the end of the 1970s, peaking at over $49 per ounce by 1980.

Despite this sharp rise, the prices fell back down, and by the late 1980s, silver was trading under $10 per ounce again. This level persisted for years, with prices not surpassing $10 per ounce until 2006.

The Great Recession marked another significant period for silver prices. In March 2008, the price nearly doubled to about $20 per ounce, potentially driven by the global banking crisis and subsequent economic measures like quantitative easing.

But this was followed by another sharp decline, bringing prices back to around $10 per ounce in October 2008. Silver experienced another historical climb, reaching above $45 per ounce in April 2011.

The highest peak of silver prices was around $49.45 per troy ounce in January 1980. Conversely, the lowest trough for silver prices was around $3.56 per troy ounce in February 1993.

This history reflects the deep drawdowns and high run-ups characteristic of the silver market, influenced by various factors such as economic crises, market speculation and investor behavior.

Silver future prices

Key global exchanges, including those in cities like Chicago, Hong Kong, London, New York and Zurich, facilitate nearly 24-hour trading of silver. The COMEX, a branch of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, plays a pivotal role in setting the silver spot price, using futures contracts to project silver prices.

Silver futures are a financial contract where a buyer agrees to purchase, and a seller agrees to sell, a specific amount of silver at a predetermined price on a specified future date. The standardization provided by silver futures makes the contracts easily tradable on exchanges.

Silver ETPs

Silver exchange-traded products come in various legal structures, including closed-end funds and grantor trusts.

These ETPs generally hold silver bullion in audited storage regardless of their structure. They trade on exchanges with tickers similar to stocks , allowing investors to buy shares representing fractional exposure to the silver stored.
