Right at the pier you will find attractions which include a science center, an IMAX theater and a clock tower you can climb for great views of the city.

Crescent, de la Montagne and Sherbrooke Streets are the hub of the district's vibrant business life. Along Sainte-Catherine Street-which traverses almost the entire city from east to west-and up and down the cross streets, restaurants of every nationality share sidewalk space with international name-brand boutiques, great department stores, intimate café-terrasses and very happening nightclubs and bars. A spectacular view of McGill College Avenue and Mount Royal comes into view from the Place Ville Marie esplanade, the birthplace of the underground network. Montreal's "underground city," where you'll find passageways lined with over 1,000 stores is a good alternative in case of bd weather.

Old Montreal is the city's historic district. There's plenty to do within its boundaries, such as taking a spin on Old Port Montreal's observation wheel; shopping locally at Marche Bonsecours; or visiting Notre Dame Basilica, one of Canada's most stunning churches. Built by 1824, it has vaulted blue ceilings with gold stars, a gold-detailed main altar and ethereal stained-glass windows.

Montreal Botanical Garden is one of the world's largest, with over 200 bird species and 22,000 plant, flower and tree varieties. This includes bonsai, maple trees and cactus. There are several gardens to visit during your Montreal cruise, including the Chinese, Japanese and First Nations Gardens. In the summertime, the Botanical Garden also hosts events, concerts and festivals.

Local Cuisine

Montreal is known for three things: smoked meats, bagels and poutine. For Montreal-style bagels, locals recommend visiting St-Viateur Bagel. Quebec Cruise Port Terminal Information

Located in the heart of historic Quebec City, the cruise terminal offers a blend of European charm and Canadian hospitality. Immerse yourself in the city's rich history, explore its UNESCO-listed Old Town, and savor the local cuisine before embarking on a memorable cruise.

The Port of Quebec has two cruise terminals – Wharf 20/21, which has been the main location and new for the 2022 season, Wharf 30.

Wharf 20/21

The Quebec City Cruise Terminal or Wharf 20/21 (known locally as Ross Gaudreault Cruise Terminal) is located at 84 Dalhousie Street . It is located within walking distance of the Petit-Champlain district in the lower old city.

Wharf 30 is Quebec City’s newest cruise terminal and is located on Rue de l’Estuaire off Rue Abraham-Martin. It is located further away from the old city, but a shuttle is available for cruise passengers who dock for the day.

Quebec City is ideal for pre- and post-cruise sightseeing as the feel of the old city is as close as you’ll get to old-world Europe without actually crossing the Atlantic. It is the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico. While French is the main language spoken, many speak English as well, especially within the tourist center of Old Quebec . Old Quebec is located on the side of a large hill. You will dock in the “lower city” where you will find attractions like the Museum of Civilization, or Rue de Champlain with restaurants and shopping. The “upper city” has attractions such as the famed Chateau Frontenac, the Fairmont hotel, and the Citadelle, as well as a plethora of shops and cafes tucked away in narrow streets. To get from the lower city to the upper city, you can walk up steep sidewalks,  climb the “breakneck stairs,” or ride the historical Funiculaire .

Riding the Funiculaire costs $3.75 per ride, but users in wheelchairs as well  children with heights under 3.8 feet (117cm) ride for free!

If you have mobility issues or use a walking aid, or just don’t feel like doing a lot of walking, it is easy to catch a taxi to take to the upper city where you can explore at your leisure.

Quebec Cruise Tips

– for disembarking passengers only, baggage check service is available from 7 am to 5 pm for $5 (credit card only) for each piece of luggage. – Cafe du Monde is located inside the terminal at Wharf 20/21 for a bite to eat – Shopping, restaurants and museums are within walking distance, but there are many hills, so wear good walking shoes.

The months from June to September and December to February are the best times to visit Quebec City. Summer always has pleasant weather, but winter is a good time to visit due to the many indoor festivals if you can stand the cold. In the spring and autumn, the city is especially picturesque, with colorful natural sights emphasizing the city’s impressive beauty.

The ship terminal is located within easy reach of many hotels, restaurants, shops and only steps from major attractions. Many accommodations are located in old historic buildings, some are facing Saint-Lawrence River. Notre Dame Basilica is within walking distance.

Cruises depart from the Port of Montreal Iberville Passenger Terminal on De la Commune Street (Alexandra Pier) in Old Montreal close to the Old Port. Some cruise ships are often moved to T-3 in the cargo terminal area due to high water levels.

No Montreal hotels in the Downtown area offer a shuttle service to the cruise terminal since the port is located so close. Several hotels are located within easy walking distance ( no shuttle needed ). During the warmer summer months head to Parc Jean-Drapeau on the islands of Ile Sainte-Helen and Ile Notre-Dame. Take the ferry from Montreal to Longueil and return. The image of Montreal from the boat is spectacular and the river breeze is a treat on a hot day. A must do event for those looking for fun in Montreal is the Saute-Moutons Jet Boat Tour, leaving from the Old Port. It will be a great activity for the entire family and an unbelievable water adventure.

Another great way to spend a sunny summer afternoon in Montreal is a rafting experience of the world-famous Lachine Rapids. It’s an absolute blast from beginning to end.

Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport

The Port of Montreal in Canada is connected by air by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl. Airport , located approximately 12 miles (20 km) from the passenger terminal. You can choose to take the cruise lines arranged transportation, a shared private shuttle, or a taxi to/from the airport to the port.

Safe and secure car parking spaces are located directly at the Iberville cruise terminal. Passengers driving to the port can also park at other locations such as the Clock Tower Quay, Montreal Science Center and Alexandra Quay.

Volendam Kicks Off Montreal Cruise Season

The Port of Montreal has officially launched its 2024 cruise season with the arrival of Holland America’s Volendam.

The season promises to live up to last year’s success, with 50,000 passengers expected from May 4 to October 28 through 41 operations that include nine calls and 32 turnarounds.

Julie Gascon, President and CEO of the Port of Montreal, highlighted the city’s appeal as a world-class tourist destination, spotlighting the commitment to innovation and sustainability at the port through its shore power system.

Meanwhile, Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal, said he believes that Montreal is a must-see destination on the St. Lawrence River, and is proud to collaborate with the sector to create significant economic benefits for the restaurant owners and merchants of Old Montréal.

Nine cruise ships will visit Montreal for the very first time. The first and largest ship of the season, the Volendam, is from Holland America. There are two Ponant ships, Le Champlain and Lyrial, accommodating 180 and 264 passengers, respectively, and from Villa Vie Residences, Villa Vie Odyssey with 924 passengers. Other first time callers include the World Explora, Seven Seas Grandeur, Nautica and Azamara Journey.

Three milestones will also be celebrated, further illustrating the loyalty of major cruise lines to Montreal as their port of call of choice. Regent will host its 25,000th passenger aboard the Seven Seas Grandeur on September 19, while Viking Cruises will see its 30,000th passenger aboard the Viking Neptune on September 27. Oceania will host its 40,000th passenger aboard the Nautica on October 6.

In addition, ollowing an agreement between the Government of the Netherlands, the City of Rotterdam and Holland-America, the Volendam served as a refuge for 1,500 Ukrainian citizens for a period of six months starting in April 2022. To commemorate this act of humanity, a permanent exhibition has been installed aboard ship. It features photographs, children’s drawings and other testimonials from Ukrainian refugees.

The exhibition was officially inaugurated in the presence of Julie Gascon, President and CEO of the Port of Montreal, the Volendam crew, the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Montreal, Eugène Czolij, and the Honorary Consul of the Netherlands in Montreal, Michael Polak.

Montreal's 2024 cruise season sets sail with HAL's ms Volendam

The Port of Montreal (Quebec Canada) announced the commencement of the 2024 cruise season with the inaugural arrival of HAL-Holland America 's ms Volendam .

Notably, MS Volendam previously served as a refuge for 1,500 Ukrainian citizens in April 2022. This marks the ship's first visit to the city, and in adherence to maritime customs, Captain Laurentius Oscar van Eerten was presented with a customary gift.

Anticipated to match the success of the previous year, the 2024 cruise season expects to welcome ~50,000 passengers from May 4 to October 28, with a total of 41 operations comprising 9 visits and 32 embarkations/disembarkations. The vessels visiting vary widely in capacity, from the 180-passenger Le Bellot to the 1,440-passenger Volendam.

9 ships will make their inaugural calls to Montreal during this season:

• Holland America's Volendam, the season's first and largest ship
• Two Ponant ships, Le Champlain and Le Lyrial , offering an intimate luxury experience for 180 and 264 passengers, respectively
• Villa Vie Odyssey from Villa Vie Residences , accommodating 924 passengers
• World Explorer from Rivages du Monde, designed for adventurous journeys with a capacity of 200 passengers
• Seven Seas Grandeur from Regent , with 750 passengers
• Nautica from Oceania Cruises , carrying 684 passengers
• Borealis from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines , welcoming 1,320 passengers
• Azamara Journey from Azamara Cruises , marking the return of this cruise line to Montreal after an 8-year hiatus, with 718 passengers.

Additionally, three significant milestones will be celebrated, underscoring the strong relationship major cruise lines maintain with Montreal as their preferred port of call:

Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur will host its 25,000th passenger on September 19th.

Viking OCEAN 's Viking Neptune will welcome its 30,000th passenger on September 27th

Oceania's Nautica will reach its 40,000th passenger on October 6th.

Provencher_Roy adds a structurally expressive observation tower to Montreal’s waterfront

Provencher_Roy, a Montreal-based practice specializing in adaptive reuse , has refurbished a cruise ship terminal and added a cantilevered observation tower to a pier along the Saint Lawrence River. The firm’s masterplan for the terminal, known as the Grand Quai, has improved pedestrian accessibility, remaking the site as a tourist hub along the waterfront.

To match the industrial character of the site’s existing architecture, Provencher_Roy designed the observation tower with an exposed concrete and steel structure. In addition, the architects refurbished the two linear terminal buildings which service the pier.

Known as The Alexandria Pier when it opened in 1899, the site was originally used to export grains from the region. In 1967 it was converted into a cruise ship terminal and parking lot. Over the years, the pier had deteriorated and in 2014 The Port Authority of Montreal launched an architectural competition for its redesign with the intention of creating a public-friendly space connected to the city’s waterfront pedestrian promenade.

Provencher_Roy’s proposal went beyond the original brief, adding an observation tower that was not originally requested by the client. The firm collaborated with NIPPAYSAGE, a local landscape architecture studio, to add a green roof and park space to the pier.

The pier’s existing structures, Terminal One and Two, underwent significant renovations. A cantilevered glass and metal panel structure called the Port Center was appended to the inland end of Terminal One. This space contains exhibitions related to the history of Montreal’s port and maritime trade as well as an event space.

Terminal One acts as the pier’s primary passenger terminal, with Terminal Two primarily reserved for parking. On the occasion that two cruise ships arrive at once, Terminal Two can be used as a temporary terminal.

For the design of the observation tower, Provencher_Roy kept things simple. Sophie Wilikin, partner at the firm, told AN  that the team sought to emulate the geometry of the existing terminals, transforming their longitudinal simplicity into a vertical tower.

“[The Pier] is a very longitudinal experience. We wanted to create this vertical fold of the gesture, and then we decided to project it toward Montreal with this cantilevered volume on the 13th floor” she said.

Clad head to toe in transparent curtain wall, the tower’s concrete core and X-shaped steel embrasures are exposed throughout the building. An imperial staircase, visible from the exterior, climbs the tower from within the core.

To reach the tower’s top floor, visitors climb a gold-painted spiral staircase. This form was derived from the city’s vernacular architecture. Many residences feature helical staircases on their exterior. The staircase was colored gold to reference the pier’s original use in the export of wheat and cereal.

The top floor also features a structural glass volume which protrudes from the side of the tower. The cantilevered box is fit with a glass floor, providing an obstructed (and potentially nauseating) view of the surrounding city.

Construction of the tower on the site was complicated by the narrow size of the pier, and, of course, the fact it is surrounded by water. This necessitated careful sequencing to make sure work could be completed efficiently within the diminutive space.

In addition a thorough wind study was conducted to ensure the stability of the tower. This resulted in the implementation of a tuned mass damper at the top of the tower, to stabilize the building during moments of strong lateral wind.

There were also challenges creating an adequate foundation for the tower. The team poured a concrete slab within the pier, and drove piles deep into the St. Lawrence River to create a foundation for the building.

Provencher_Roy’s new tower furnishes views of important architectural landmarks along the Saint Lawrence such as Moshe Safdie’s Habitat ’67 and Silo No.5, a monumental industrial grain silo. This unique view will attract tourists, who are already passing though the site by cruise ship. Through this addition and the provision of green space and improved accessibility, the Grand Quai has been reintegrated into the public life of Montreal.

A brand-new naked cruise will be launching in 2025

The trip has been marketed as ‘an an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise’

Some of us opt to explore the world by foot , car or train , but plenty of travellers are partial to bobbing between destinations aboard a cruise. And there are loads to choose from, from pickleball or Star Trek-themed voyages to trips based around murder mysteries, Irish music or Taylor Swift . 

But would you ever board a nude cruise? Well, now’s your chance. Norwegian Cruise Line have paired up with nudist travel company Bare Necessities to launch a trip described as ‘an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise’, according to the Independent . 

The cruise, which will depart from Miami  on February 3, 2025 will journey around destinations including the Bahamas , St Lucia  and Puerto Rico , before returning on February 14. 

While that’s already a rather heavenly itinerary, the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship also has plenty on board to keep you entertained while you’re letting it all hang loose. There’s open deck space, 14 restaurants and 14 bars, a large buffet area, a casino, spa and several nightlife options. 

But don’t disrobe just yet – there are a few rules to bear in mind before you wander the starboard starkers. Cruise rules apparently require passengers to be clothed during the Captain’s reception and introduction, at all times in the main and speciality dining rooms and while docked in port. 

You’ve also gotta put a towel down before perching in the stateroom, pool deck, and buffet area, and you can’t be nude in front of other ships in port, and absolutely no ‘fondling or inappropriate touching’. 

Totally horrified or irresistibly intrigued? Prices start at $2,000 (£1,592, €1,862) for a two-person cabin, but soar up to $33,155 (£26,400, €29,590) for a three-person ‘garden villa’. You can have a look at the Bare Necessities website here .
