Port Canaveral , Florida, is one of the busiest passenger cruise ports in the USA. Most major cruise lines have at least one cruise ship here as their home port to sail passengers to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. A top favorite for sun-seekers everywhere, a visit to this region doesn’t happen just once for many cruise guests—especially those living in cooler climates needing to escape the chill of winter.

Note that itineraries can be subject to change by the cruise line at any time before and during your cruise. But as it stands right now, this is a great cruise. Here’s why:

  • Your embarkation port is Port Canaveral, about 45 minutes east of Orlando International Airport in Florida. This is a major airport servicing many airlines, with good transportation options to the cruise port or your hotel.
  • Orlando Airport also has good hotel options either at the airport or in Orlando to enjoy the city for a few days before you start your cruise. And the weather is often good over the holiday season.
  • You are cruising to one of the warmest areas in the northern hemisphere during this season. Getting away from the winter chill and into the sun is undeniably a good thing!
  • You have three whole days at sea cruising the warm waters of the Caribbean. That means plenty of time to enjoy everything this fantast new cruise ship has to offer. You will be spoilt for choice with endless activities, shows, fitness and health possibilities, dining options, and good fun onboard with other cruise guests.

'When you're on a ship, everything is so easy': What it's like to spend New Year's on a cruise

cruise ship happy new year

  • New Year's cruises offer an alternative to celebrating on land.
  • Cruise lines host a range of festivities for the holiday.
  • Some passengers said the sailings offer convenience and a communal celebration.

Kouri Marshall goes big on New Year's Eve. The 40-year-old nonprofit director usually spends the holiday celebrating with family and friends, hosting dinner at his house with wine, or going to an event in Chicago, where he lives.

"I embrace the challenges of the year that has passed and look forward to the joy that will be in the next year," he told USA TODAY.

But a couple of years ago, he decided to go bigger by taking a cruise. Marshall rang in 2020 on a Caribbean sailing with Royal Caribbean International, where passengers celebrated with champagne and were dressed in tuxedos and gowns. "I felt like I was channeling the energy of the Titanic," he said.

He and a group of friends spent the night eating in the main dining room, listening to live bands and dancing in a conga line. "And then at 2 a.m., I was eating a pizza because it's New Year's after all," he said.

New Year's cruises offer an alternative to celebrations on land, with onboard festivities to mark the passing of midnight and give travelers a unique way to start their year.

Cruises offer communal celebration

Nicole Gianfrancesco took a New Year's cruise with family in 2019 to celebrate her dad's birthday, who was born on New Year's Day.

The frequent cruiser had always wanted to spend the holiday sailing, so she celebrated at a party on the lido deck during their Bahamas cruise with Carnival Cruise Line. The 33-year-old, who works in patient care for an orthopedic practice, said that by being on the ship for a week, she felt more camaraderie with her fellow passengers than she might at a restaurant or party elsewhere.

When the clock struck midnight, she said, "Everyone was just really getting along. Everyone (was) just excited. People who didn't know each other (were) hugging each other... So, it was a great time."

The trip was supposed to kick off a year of travel for Gianfrancesco, who is based in Sicklerville, New Jersey. She had three other cruises booked, including a "bucket list" transatlantic sailing from Italy, all of which were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions .

In hindsight, she appreciates the experience even more. "Looking back, I was like, 'Oh, we got so lucky that we were even able to do it,' " she said.

New Year's sailings can be more convenient than land celebrations

For other travelers, the convenience of a cruise ship is a catalyst for celebrating the holiday in a way they might not otherwise.

When Nick Vitani is at home, he doesn't go out for New Year's. "If I'm home, in my old age, I barely watch the midnight countdown anymore," said the 60-year-old, laughing. "I'm lucky if I make it to that."

Vitani, who works in information technology and as a travel agent, also has concerns about the safety of driving during the holiday. There is often an increase in drunk-driving fatalities around Christmas and New Year's, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with 837 people killed in drunk-driving crashes in December 2019. Vitani feels safer on a cruise ship.

"You can get dressed in your room and you can walk right to the place where you're going to eat," he said. "To go to the parties, you don't have to drive, you don't have to park." He and his wife, Barbara, have spent between five and seven New Year's holidays on cruises over the past decade, including last year.

They spent part of New Year's Eve playing games in the casino and drinking in the ship's lounge with friends. On the ship's promenade at midnight, they were showered with balloons.

At home, he said, they "would watch TV and go to bed at 11:30. ...But when you're on a ship, everything is so easy for you to just go do whatever you want."

Vitani, who is based in Windermere, Florida, said in his experience New Year's cruises tend to be more expensive than other some other sailings, though he noted the further out travelers book, the better deal they will find. Going out or throwing a party ashore can be expensive, too, he said, and on cruises, many items and amenities such as food are included in the fare .

What do cruise lines do for New Year's?

Cruise lines offer a number of ways to celebrate the holiday. This year, Royal Caribbean will host parties throughout its ships, with countdowns to midnight and balloon drops, a spokesperson told USA TODAY in an email.

The line's Adventure Ocean kids program "will extend its Late Night Party Zone hours to 2 a.m. and (for-fee) nursery hours until 1 a.m. so parents can celebrate," the spokesperson added. "All Adventure Ocean rooms are decorated, and kids have their own balloon drop and dance party. Teens have their own dedicated party in the teen’s lounge or designated ship venue with their own countdown."

Planning a cruise?: Here are the documents and costs to keep in mind

The luxe Cunard Line hosts a New Year's gala night, and Celebrity Cruises will hold an outdoor New Year's party by the pool – weather permitting – with complimentary champagne at midnight, among other offerings.

Given that ships are on the move, midnight might be relative. But Celebrity, for example, usually changes the clocks at 2 a.m. when crossing time zones, after the celebrations, according to a spokesperson for the line.

Around 12 a.m. on Marshall's cruise, he stepped outside on the deck by himself and considered their remote position in the middle of the ocean. "For me, it was very symbolic that the future for me is limitless, and the opportunities are exponential," he said.

The best new cruises in the world: 2024 Hot List

By CNT Editors

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Cruise Ship and Ship

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that makes a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. From around £574 per person for a seven-night sailing. Scott Laird

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

The best new hotels in Europe: 2024 Hot List

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Taylor Eisenhauer

Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Megan Spurrell

Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favourite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead. From around £1495. Celeste Moure

9 Places to Go for New Year’s Eve to Ring in 2024

By Lauren Breedlove, Sue Bryant

Last updated: November 6th, 2023

places to go for New Years

  • Find a Cruise

What better way to welcome 2024 than with an incredible trip to an awe-inspiring destination? From low-key celebrations to more adventurous endeavors, there’s a perfect New Year’s vacation for any type of traveler.

This is a great time to plan a bucket-list trip, push yourself outside of your comfort zone, see that view you’ve always dreamed of in real life, or try your favorite dish cooked in its home country.

Whether you’re in search of a place to unwind after the holidays, a more lively city escape to celebrate, or you’re craving wide-open spaces with a side of fantastic scenery, there are endless opportunities for commemorating a fresh year. Here are nine places to visit for New Year’s that will start 2024 off on the right foot.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, one of the best places to go for New Year's Eve

Isla Verde, Puerto Rico

There’s a big culture of celebration in Puerto Rico, and New Year’s Eve is no different. Before the party gets going, you may see people cleaning their homes, which is a tradition and is intended to start the new year on a positive, refreshed note.

Some locals even throw buckets of water or sugar out of their windows to send the evil spirits away. Families tuck into asopao, a rich stew, and arroz con gandules, rice with pork and pigeon peas.

Colorful street in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

One of the best things to do in San Juan is to wander around the colorful streets of Old San Juan, where brightly painted houses are adorned with colorful balconies (watch out for those buckets of water, though).

Top view of Escambrón Marine Park, Puerto Rico

Escambrón Marine Park, Puerto Rico

Explore the two solid fortresses that guard the city for a glimpse into military life here in the 16th century. Snorkel in Escambrón Marine Park, or fly over the rainforest on a zipline. Make time for a celebratory piña colada, which is said to have been invented in Puerto Rico .

Nassau, Bahamas

Pink facade of Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas

Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas

The rum cocktails flow over the festive season in The Bahamas as locals and visitors enjoy the sunshine and the sparkling ocean. Excitement builds up to the big Junkanoo parade that takes place on New Year’s Day along Nassau’s Bay Street.

During your time here approaching New Year’s, you’ll see preparations for the carnival, including elaborate costumes, drums, highly decorated floats, and dance troupes.

Clear waters of Blue Lagoon Island

Blue Lagoon Island, Bahamas

Enjoy the happy vibes of the tropics at Nassau’s bustling Straw Market, or take a trip to dreamy Blue Lagoon Island and while away an afternoon in a hammock, rum punch by your side.

Fly down the water slides at Aquaventure, the thrill-packed, 141-acre waterpark at Atlantis Paradise Island, or snorkel over the vibrant coral reefs around Pearl Island.

Hanoi, Vietnam

People exploring the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Vietnam

Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Vietnam

Vietnam actually celebrates two New Year’s Eves; December 31, for the Gregorian calendar (also referred to as International New Year’s Eve); and Tet, for the Lunar New Year, which in 2024 falls on February 10.

You’ll find a party spirit for both. In Hanoi , the capital, the sky will be lit by fireworks and the streets packed with locals celebrating and bands playing.

As well as joining in the celebrations, take time to explore the city. Take a cyclo tour through the atmospheric and partially walled Old Quarter , where you can sample sizzling street food.

Explore the wide boulevards and grand mansions of the French Quarter. This is where you’ll want to stop for coffee in a French patisserie, a happy obsession among city dwellers.

Hanoi, one of the best places to go for New Year's Eve

Halong Bay, Vietnam

Then, why not do something completely different for the first day of 2024 and take a cruise across spectacular Halong Bay, a landscape of some 2,000 jungly karst towers?

One of the best places to visit in Asia , there are floating villages and impressive caves to explore, as well as opportunities to kayak between some of the islands. Listen to birdsong and look out for monkeys scampering through the trees as you float.

Grand Cayman

People snorkeling in Stingray City, Grand Cayman

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

The Cayman Islands enjoy a happy week of parties, beach picnics, and family celebrations between Christmas and New Year’s, making this a great time to visit Grand Cayman . December is peak season, with sunny days and relatively low humidity, so the island has a real buzz.

Spend your time in Grand Cayman communing with docile stingrays at Stingray City, a shallow sandbar where graceful rays gather for tidbits when boats arrive. Snorkel over the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, a WWII navy ship that’s now a teeming artificial reef.

Grand Cayman, one of the best places to go for New Year's Eve

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman

Soak up the sunshine on glorious Seven Mile Beach, one of Grand Cayman’s best beaches . And when you’ve had enough, if that’s possible, stroll through the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park in George Town to admire the colorful blooms.

Finish your day with a Mudslide, the islands’ famous cocktail, featuring vodka, coffee liqueur, and Bailey’s Irish Cream over ice.

Seville, Spain

Seville, one of the best places to go for New Year's Eve

Seville is the home of the sultry flamenco dance. While you’ll hear the strains of flamenco music on the breeze at any time of year, the days around New Year’s Eve are when this art form comes to a head. There are shows everywhere, from small, intimate clubs to bigger venues.

As December 31 approaches, you’ll see grapes on sale all over this beautiful Spanish city . These doce uvas de la suerte are consumed one by one on the 12 strokes of midnight, one for good luck every month of the year.

This is also a good time to sample turron, a delicious nougat made from honey, sugar, and egg white, and studded with nuts.

Opulent Real Alcázar in Seville

Real Alcazar in Seville, Spain

While you’re in Seville, there’s plenty to see. Stroll through the atmospheric Santa Cruz neighborhood, the old Jewish quarter, and admire the intricate beauty of the cathedral.

Take in the exquisite Real Alcazar, the Royal Palace, and climb the spiraling ramps of the Giralda Tower, a former minaret more than 800 years old, to see the city stretching away beneath you.

Turquoise waters of Knip Beach, Curaçao

Knip Beach, Curaçao

New Year’s Eve is a massive event in Curaçao , with as much going on in the days before December 31st as on the night itself. There will be beach parties, fireworks, and feasting. You’ll see oliebollen in all the shops, which are deep-fried dough balls filled with raisins and apples.

To eat them, you dunk them in powdered sugar for an even better sugar rush. Don’t be alarmed if you hear bangs and crackles in the streets; these are pagaras, or rolls of firecrackers set off around New Year’s to ward off evil spirits.

Colorful buildings of Willemstad, Curaçao

Willemstad, Curaçao

Spend your time in Curaçao basking on the white sand beaches that the ABC Islands are famous for; Mambo Beach is where you can really enjoy the party spirit.

Admire the gelato shades of Willemstad’s historic waterfront and take a walking tour of the Punda and Otrobanda neighborhoods to see vibrant street art. Don’t forget to buy a bottle of Blue Curaçao liqueur as a memento of your time in this pretty Caribbean island.

Galapagos Islands

Blue-footed booby on a rock with island as backdrop

The famous Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador are the ultimate bucket-list destination for animal enthusiasts. With endless wildlife viewing opportunities in an otherworldly setting, this remote collection of islands is an ideal location to bring in the New Year.

The protected Galapagos Islands are a place to watch sea lions lazing near the sea, along with giant tortoises, playful penguins, and endemic marine life.

Couple snorkeling in the Galapagos

Snorkeling in the Galapagos

Ring in the New Year with popular Galapagos animals such as blue-footed boobies, sea turtles, and whale sharks. Snorkelers will enjoy Isla Lobos and San Cristobal, while hikers will jump at the chance to go crater trekking around Sierra Negra. You’ll want your camera nearby at all times to capture the beautiful scenery and interesting wildlife encounters you’ll experience here.

Stunning view of Tierra del Fuego National Park

Tierra del Fuego National Park in Ushuaia, Argentina

If your idea of a good time involves the outdoors and dramatic landscapes, the region of Patagonia in South America is one of the best places to go for New Year’s Eve. The Andes mountain range is the star attraction, with glacial-fed lakes, fjords, and even deserts and grasslands, the contrast adding to the natural allure.

Explore the unique landscape of Tierra del Fuego National Park, just outside the city of Ushuaia . Forests adorned with moss, rivers, and glacial lakes provide a scenic backdrop to local wildlife like red foxes and guanacos. Immerse yourself in nature and follow one of the park’s hiking trails to awe-inspiring sites like the Black Lagoon or the lookout point over Lapataia Bay.

Red exterior of the Southern Fuegian Railway, Patagonia

Southern Fuegian Railway, Patagonia

For a fully relaxed way to take in the scenery, hop aboard the train that traverses “the end of the world.” The steam railway ride on the Southern Fuegian Railway is the perfect opportunity to observe the natural splendor particular to this region of Patagonia. You’ll learn about the history of the area as you feast your eyes on stunning South American waterfalls , mountains, and wildlife. Traveling to the end of the world to ring in the New Year is one of the most interesting ways to celebrate.

8 New Cruise Ships Launching in 2024 That You Need to Know About

E veryone loves the thrill of sailing on a brand new cruise ship. If you’re wondering what new cruise ship options you’ll have in 2024, there are eight ships set to launch. One of them, the Sun Princess from Princess Cruise Line, has already made its debut.

Sun Princess

  • Launched February 2024

Princess Cruise just launched its biggest ship, the Sun Princess, with a 4300-passenger capacity. This new ship is designed to be more family-friendly, with the aim of attracting younger cruise-goers. On the top deck, they’ve introduced a hang-gliding ride, the first of its kind on a cruise ship. Additionally, there’s a ropes course, a splash zone, a wider range of restaurants, a high-tech theater, and a glass-covered dome entertainment venue.

Suburbs 101 participates in affiliate programs including Amazon Associates Program and may earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

  • Launching June 2024

Cunard’s latest addition to its fleet is the Queen Anne, the company’s first new ship in over a decade. This 2794-passenger cruise liner will embark on its maiden voyage in Europe, with sailings in the Mediterranean and Scandinavia. The ship’s design is a modern take on the classic “golden age” of cruising, featuring new restaurants and a two-deck Royal Court theater. Check the prices for Cunard cruises .

Utopia of the Seas

  • Launching in July 2024

Royal Caribbean is introducing another massive cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, which will soon become the second largest cruise ship worldwide, surpassed only by Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. Utopia of the Seas is an impressive ship, with a passenger capacity of 6,700, a total weight of 237,000 tons, and 2,830 cabins.

It is part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships featuring an impressive array of amenities, such as an indoor ice skating rink, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, a rock climbing wall, a water park, a 259 ft Ultimate Abyss waterslide, an aqua theater, and neighborhoods filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Cruise passengers will be entertained with Broadway-caliber shows.

Utopia of the Seas will sail on short getaway itineraries from Port Canaveral (Orland), offering 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday itineraries to the Bahamas and Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Check the prices for Royal Caribbean cruises .

Disney Treasure

  • Launching December 2024

Disney Treasure, the latest addition to the Disney Cruise Line, will launch in December this year, marking a significant milestone after a decade since the launch of the last Disney cruise ship. The ship has 1256 cabins and suites, each designed with a theme inspired by Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas.

Passengers on the cruise are in for a treat, with exciting Broadway-style musicals and the Aqua Mouse, a thrilling Disney water ride. The themed restaurants on board are another highlight, featuring a Marvel-themed restaurant and a Mexican restaurant inspired by the movie Coco. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship also features a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar, resembling a classic ocean liner’s haunted drawing room, serving ghostly cocktails.

  • Launching August 2024

Silversea Cruises is preparing to launch its newest ship, the Silver Ray, in the summer of 2024. The Silver Ray is the second Nova Class ship in the Silversea fleet, and it promises to bring ultra-luxury cruising to a new level. With a capacity of 728 passengers, the Silver Ray is a small ship that offers an all-balcony cabin experience, complete with walk-in closets and butler service.

But that’s not all. The Silver Ray is also an eco-friendly cruise ship, making it the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship to be completely emission-free while in port. It does this by using fuel cells and batteries to power the ship.

The Silver Ray will begin its maiden voyage season sailing in the Mediterranean, before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will offer South America cruise itineraries. Check the prices for Silversea cruises .

Brilliant Lady

  • Launching TBA 2024

Virgin Voyages, the popular adults-only cruise line, is launching its newest ship, the “Brilliant Lady,” sometime in 2024. The brand new ship will have a capacity of over 2700 passengers and will be an adults-only cruise—perfect for anyone seeking an indulgent cruising experience.

Explora II is the latest ship of Explora Journeys, MSC Group’s newest addition to its luxury brand. With a capacity of slightly over 900 passengers, it’s a smaller cruise ship that promises a more personalized experience for its guests.

Passengers on board the ship will be treated to a range of luxurious amenities that include oversized suites, welcome champagne bottles, an exclusive whiskey and cigar bar with rare whiskeys, an expansive spa, and plenty of bespoke experiences. The ship will sail in the Mediterranean, perfect for passengers looking for a luxurious and intimate cruising experience.

Mein Schiff 7

  • Launching Summer 2024

Mein Schiff 7 is the latest addition to TUI Cruises’ fleet and is expected to launch in the summer of 2024. TUI Cruises, a German-based cruise line co-owned by Royal Caribbean, has designed Mein Schiff 7 as a mid-size ship with a passenger capacity of 2896.

The brand new cruise ship has 12 restaurants and bistros, 17 bars and lounges, and cabins for solo travelers. The ship also features a reinvented casino concept that combines a lounge and casino. The ship will sail in the Baltic and British Isles.

Icon of the Seas

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas.

Scheduled to set sail in early 2024, the Icon of the Seas is one of the most celebrated and anticipated new cruise ships across all the major cruise lines. This Icon Class vessel was built to dazzle and entertain cruise passengers of all ages, and it features eight unique neighborhoods, seven pools and the largest waterpark at sea.

In total, Icon of the Seas offers 2,805 individual staterooms with space for 7,600 guests at maximum and 2,350 crew members. The vessel is 1,198 feet long with gross tonnage of 250,800.

  • Sails to: The Icon of the Seas will offer alternating seven-night sailings between the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The vessel's Western Caribbean itinerary includes stops at Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, Roatan in Honduras and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas . Cruisers will find the basic interior, ocean view and balcony staterooms they would expect. The ship also features 179 suites that vary in size and in terms of their features, with some really spacious and over-the-top options. For example, the vessel's Ultimate Family Townhouse (UL) is more than 1,700 square feet with three stories, a multi-level slide, an outdoor space with a ping pong table and more.

Special dining experiences include a hibachi and sushi restaurant, a seafood restaurant, a Chef's Table experience for up to 16 diners at a time, a Johnny Rockets and more.

Other features include an ice-skating rink, two rock climbing walls, a zip line, a basketball court, two FlowRider Surf simulators and of course the line's famous AquaTheater. Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Utopia of the Seas also features special spaces for kids and teens, including dedicated clubs, an Imagination Studio and an on-board arcade.

For coffee lovers, a Starbucks is also on board.
  • Features: The Wonder of the Seas has its own Central Park, along with 11 different bars, as well as special kids and teens-only areas like a social club and an arcade. Odyssey of the Seas

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas is a Quantum Ultra Class cruise ship that's smaller than the other newest vessels from the line. The impressive ship completed its first sailing in 2021 when it became the first ship of its class to sail from the United States. Odyssey of the Seas currently departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and other ports and offers a range of six-night and seven-night sailings throughout the Caribbean in the coming months.

Up to 4,198 guests can sail on the Odyssey of the Seas with double occupancy, and 1,612 crew members are on board to tend to their every need. The ship is approximately 1,138 feet long and is 167,704 gross tons.

  • Sails to: Odyssey of the Seas will depart from various ports in the United States and elsewhere in the world in the coming years. For example, there are upcoming six-night sailings from Fort Lauderdale that include stops in Labadee, Haiti and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in addition to Perfect Day at CocoCay. The vessel will complete a 14-day transatlantic cruise in April and May of 2024, which begins in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Rome, Italy. From there, the vessel will offer Greek Islands cruises from Rome before moving back to Cape Liberty (New York), New Jersey in the fall of 2024. At that point, itineraries will include stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, Nassau in the Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay.
  • Cabin types: Odyssey of the Seas offers interior staterooms, ocean view rooms and balcony staterooms. Guests can also book interior rooms with a virtual balcony that boasts a floor-to-ceiling virtual view of the outdoors. Over-the-top suites available on the Odyssey include an Owner's Loft Suite, a Royal Loft Suite, a Grand Loft Suite and more.
  • Dining options: As a smaller vessel with considerably fewer passengers than Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class and Icon Class ships, Odyssey of the Seas has fewer dining options overall. Guests can dine at seven included eateries including a main dining room, a bistro, a cafe and the main ship buffet. There are also seven specialty restaurants and experiences on board including the Chef's Table, a Chops Grille and a sushi and hibachi restaurant. Like other newer ships from Royal Caribbean, the Odyssey also has its own Starbucks.
  • Features: The Odyssey has eight dedicated bars and lounges on board, bumper cars, laser tag, a rock-climbing wall, an outdoor movie screen and a casino, along with kid and teen features like an arcade, a kids' splash area and a social club. A FlowRider surf simulator is on board, as well as a sky diving simulator. Note that the Odyssey of the Seas doesn't have an AquaTheater like Oasis Class ships.

Look Out for Star of the Seas

Royal Caribbean is already offering limited information about its newest ship, the Star of the Seas. This vessel will also be an Icon Class ship like the Icon of the Seas, meaning it will be big and beautiful with all the bells and whistles.

The Star of the Seas is scheduled to debut in 2025.
