Popular gamefish targeted in OC waters

fishslider-spring

Yellowtail – Maybe the most prized gamefish in southern California waters this hard fighting member of the jack family will not disappoint. Caught year round at the islands of Los Angeles, and seasonally along the coastal waters. 10-20 pound specimens are common and up to 40 pounds possible.

White Sea Bass – Known for reaching giant sizes of 70 pounds or more 30-40 pounds is more the norm. Both found at Catalina Island and along the coast year round this fish can bite with reckless abandon and then at times be very finicky. Excellent eating gamefish.

Calico Bass – Also known as rock bass these smaller gamefish can make up for their size in their fighting ability. During the spring and summer months these fish spawn creating clouds of bass that will inhale most baits. Still they head for the rocks and the larger specimens are very difficult to keep from breaking you off in the rocks. They grow slowly and larger ones are best returned to ensure healthy breeding stock.

Barracuda – Aggressive gamefish that attacks lures and baits and can bite through line before you feel the bite. Caught year round but primarily in the spring and summer months. Large schools make for not stop action. Hard fighting lots of fun for both adults and kids.

Tuna – Several species of tuna can be caught with albacore tuna found further offshore on mostly overnight trips while yellowfin tuna and bluefin tuna can be caught on full day and even ½ day fishing trips during the summer and fall months. Often fish are located on the troll and then chummed with live bait. Bites can be fast and furious and these hard fighting fish can wear you out in short order. Kelp paddies also attract tuna and when one is located can be a treasure chest for tuna and other gamefish.

Rockfish – Covers many species of gamefish usually found in slightly deeper water. Red snapper, ling cod, sheepshead, sculpin, whitefish or just a few all great eating and caught in larger numbers. Although not considered larger gamefish several of the varieties can reach 15 pounds of more. Caught year round both at islands and along the coastline. Along with being excellent eating their coloration is quite amazing.

Table of Contents

Understanding Deep Sea Fishing Prices

Deep sea fishing is an exciting and adventurous activity that allows you to explore the vast ocean and catch a wide variety of fish. However, before embarking on this thrilling experience, it’s important to understand the factors that affect deep sea fishing prices. By understanding these factors, you can make an informed decision when choosing a deep sea fishing charter and ensure that you are getting the best value for your money.

Factors Affecting Deep Sea Fishing Prices

Several factors play a significant role in determining the prices of deep sea fishing trips . These factors can vary from one charter company to another, so it’s essential to consider them when choosing the right fishing trip for you.

The location of the deep sea fishing trip is a crucial factor that affects the price. Different areas have different fishing conditions and regulations, which can impact the cost of the trip. Some locations may offer a higher chance of catching certain species or larger fish, making them more desirable and therefore more expensive.

Duration of Trip

The length of the deep sea fishing trip also influences the cost. Longer trips typically cost more than shorter ones as they allow you to spend more time on the water, increasing your chances of catching fish. However, it’s essential to consider your level of experience and the time you are willing to invest in the activity when determining the duration of your trip.

Boat Type and Size

The type and size of the boat used for deep sea fishing can significantly affect the price. Larger boats with better amenities and equipment may command higher prices due to their ability to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Additionally, specialized fishing boats that are equipped with advanced technology and gears may also come at a premium price.

The inclusions provided by the charter company can impact the overall cost of the deep sea fishing trip. Some charters may include essential items such as fishing gear, bait, and even meals, while others may charge additional fees for these services. It’s crucial to carefully review what is included in the price and determine if any additional costs need to be considered.

Seasonality

The seasonality of deep sea fishing can affect the pricing as well. Certain times of the year may offer better fishing conditions and a higher chance of catching desirable fish species, leading to increased demand for fishing trips. As a result, prices may fluctuate during peak seasons when demand is high.

Demand and Popularity

The demand and popularity of deep sea fishing in a specific area can also influence the pricing. If a particular location or fishing charter is well-known for providing exceptional experiences, the demand for their services may be higher, leading to increased prices. On the other hand, lesser-known or new charters may offer more competitive pricing to attract customers.

Benefits of Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing offers a plethora of benefits that make it a worthwhile experience for both seasoned anglers and beginners alike. Understanding these benefits can help you appreciate the value of deep sea fishing and why it is often worth the price.

Adventure and Thrill

One of the most significant benefits of deep sea fishing is the sense of adventure and thrill it provides. The vastness of the ocean and the unknown depths beneath you create an exhilarating atmosphere that is hard to find in any other activity. The anticipation of reeling in a big catch and the adrenaline rush that comes with it is an experience that cannot be replicated.

Varied and Exciting Catches

Deep sea fishing opens up a whole new world of catches that you might not encounter when fishing inshore. From large game fish like marlin and tuna to smaller species like snapper and grouper, the possibilities are endless. The excitement of hooking a massive marlin or battling a feisty tuna can create memories that will last a lifetime.

Breath-taking Scenery

The beauty of the deep sea cannot be overstated. As you venture further offshore, you are treated to stunning views of the vast ocean, picturesque coastlines, and vibrant marine life. The opportunity to witness dolphins, sea turtles, and even whales in their natural habitat is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Expert Guidance

Deep sea fishing charters often come with experienced captains and crew members who know the ins and outs of the ocean and the best fishing spots. Their expertise and guidance can significantly increase your chances of success and ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trip. Whether you are a novice angler or a seasoned pro, their knowledge and tips can help enhance your fishing skills.

Quality Time with Family and Friends

Deep sea fishing provides an excellent opportunity to bond with your loved ones. Whether you are fishing with your family, friends, or colleagues, the shared experience of being on the water and working together to reel in a catch can create lasting memories and strengthen relationships. It offers a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing you to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company in a unique setting.

Common Pricing Structures

Deep sea fishing trips usually follow three common pricing structures: fixed pricing, hourly pricing, and charter pricing. Understanding these pricing structures can help you determine which option best suits your needs and budget.

Fixed Pricing

Fixed pricing involves a set rate for a specific deep sea fishing trip. This pricing structure is often used for standard trips that have a pre-determined duration and inclusions. The advantage of fixed pricing is that you know exactly what you are paying for upfront and can budget accordingly.

Hourly Pricing

Hourly pricing is based on the duration of the deep sea fishing trip. The charter company charges a rate per hour, allowing you to customize the length of your trip based on your preferences and budget. Hourly pricing provides flexibility and can be a cost-effective option for those who want shorter fishing trips.

Charter Pricing

Charter pricing offers various options for deep sea fishing trips. These include full-day charters, half-day charters, shared charters, and private charters. Each type of charter has a specific price associated with it, depending on the duration, amenities, and inclusions provided. Charter pricing allows you to choose the option that best suits your needs and budget.

Understanding Deep Sea Fishing Prices: What To Expect

Fixed pricing provides a standard rate for a specific deep sea fishing trip. This pricing structure is commonly used for trips with a pre-determined duration and inclusions. The advantage of fixed pricing is that it eliminates any surprises and allows you to plan your expenses accordingly.

Standard Rate

The standard rate for a deep sea fishing trip with fixed pricing typically includes the cost of the boat, captain, crew, fishing equipment, bait, and any necessary licenses. Additional costs may apply for extra services or amenities. It’s important to review the inclusions carefully to ensure that you are aware of what is covered in the standard rate.

Additional Costs

While the standard rate covers the basics, there may be additional costs that you need to consider. These can include fuel surcharges, tackle rental fees, cleaning and filleting services, and crew tips. It’s essential to inquire about these additional costs before booking your trip to avoid any surprises.

Hourly pricing is based on the duration of the deep sea fishing trip. The charter company charges a rate per hour, allowing you to customize the length of your trip based on your preferences and budget. Hourly pricing provides flexibility and allows for shorter fishing trips or extended excursions.

Rate per Hour

The rate per hour for deep sea fishing varies depending on the charter company, location, and the type of boat used. Factors such as the size of the boat and the amenities provided can also influence the hourly rate. It’s important to inquire about the rate per hour when considering this pricing structure.

Minimum Duration

Hourly pricing usually has a minimum duration requirement, which is the minimum number of hours that you must book. This requirement ensures that the charter company can cover their costs and maintain a profitable business. The minimum duration can vary between charter companies, so it’s essential to consider this when planning your trip.

Fuel Surcharge and Additional Fees

In addition to the hourly rate, there may be fuel surcharges and additional fees associated with hourly pricing. Fuel surcharges are common in cases where the charter company needs to travel long distances to reach prime fishing spots. It’s important to inquire about these additional costs to avoid any surprises when it comes time to settle the bill.

Understanding Deep Sea Fishing Prices: What To Expect

Charter pricing offers various options for deep sea fishing trips. Whether you prefer a full-day adventure, a half-day excursion, or sharing the experience with other anglers, charter pricing allows you to choose the option that best suits your needs and preferences.

Full-Day Charter

A full-day charter typically lasts between 8 to 10 hours, allowing ample time for deep sea fishing. This option is ideal for anglers who want to spend a full day on the water and increase their chances of catching a variety of fish species. Full-day charters often include inclusions such as fishing gear, bait, and meals.

Half-Day Charter

A half-day charter is a shorter option, typically lasting between 4 to 6 hours. This option is suitable for anglers who want to experience deep sea fishing but have limited time or prefer a shorter trip. While the fishing time is reduced, a half-day charter still offers the opportunity to catch various fish species and enjoy the thrills of deep sea fishing.

Shared Charters

Shared charters allow you to split the cost of a deep sea fishing trip with other anglers. This option is ideal for solo anglers or small groups who want to experience deep sea fishing but are looking for a more cost-effective option. Shared charters provide an opportunity to meet new people and share the excitement of reeling in a big catch.

Private Charters

Private charters offer exclusive use of the fishing boat for your group. This option provides the ultimate privacy and allows you to customize the trip according to your preferences. Private charters are ideal for special occasions, such as birthdays, anniversaries, or corporate events, where you want to have a more intimate and personalized deep sea fishing experience.

In addition to the basic pricing structure, there may be additional costs associated with deep sea fishing trips. These costs can vary depending on the charter company and the services provided.

Fuel Surcharge

Fuel surcharges are common in deep sea fishing trips, especially if the charter company needs to travel long distances to reach prime fishing spots. These surcharges help cover the cost of fuel and ensure that the charter company can continue to provide quality services. It’s important to inquire about any fuel surcharges before booking your trip to avoid any surprises.

Tackle Rental

Some charter companies may offer the option to rent fishing tackle, including rods, reels, and other necessary equipment. If you do not have your own fishing gear or prefer not to bring it, renting tackle can be a convenient option. However, it’s important to consider the rental fees and factor them into your overall budget.

Cleaning and Filleting

After a successful deep sea fishing trip, you may want to have your catch cleaned and filleted to take home with you. While some charter companies may include this service in the standard rate, others may charge an additional fee. It’s important to inquire about cleaning and filleting services beforehand to avoid any surprises.

Tipping the captain and crew members is customary in the deep sea fishing industry. While it may not be a mandatory cost, it is customary to show your appreciation for their hard work and expertise. The recommended tip amount may vary, but it is typically 15-20% of the total trip cost.

In conclusion, understanding deep sea fishing prices is essential when planning your fishing trip. Factors such as location, duration of the trip, boat type and size, inclusions, seasonality, and demand can impact the overall cost. Deep sea fishing offers numerous benefits, including adventure, varied catches, breath-taking scenery, expert guidance, and quality time with loved ones. Common pricing structures include fixed pricing, hourly pricing, and charter pricing, each with its own advantages. Additional costs such as fuel surcharges, tackle rental fees, cleaning and filleting services, and crew tips should also be considered. By considering these factors and understanding the pricing structures and additional costs, you can make an informed decision and enjoy a memorable deep sea fishing experience.

How Much Does a Deep Sea Fishing Trip Cost?

deep sea fishing trip price

Deep sea fishing is really fun for many people who enjoy going fishing. However, deep sea fishing charters cost money, and they can sometimes be quite pricey. This has led many people to ask: How much does a deep sea fishing trip cost?

A deep sea fishing trip costs anywhere from $90 to $2,600. People can go on a private deep sea fishing charter or a public one, but private charters typically cost more. Private charters also usually allow up to 6 people on the boat at a time while public ones might offer a larger capacity.

Now that you know how much it can cost to go on a deep sea fishing charter, you may be wondering what the differences are between the private and public options. This could be an important distinction that will affect your choice, so let’s look into it!

How Much Do Deep Sea Fishing Trips Cost?

The cost of a deep sea fishing trip varies depending on where you are going, how long the trip is, how many people are going on the charter, and what type of fish you plan on catching. If you want to find out how many deep sea fishing options are available in your area, go to a local trip advisory website or contact a travel agent.

Some deep sea fishing charters charge by the person, but most allow up to 6 people to go on the charter at once. If you are still deciding which service or ship you want to go with, first decide how many people will be going on the charter with you, and then check how many people they allow on the boat at a time. This should help you narrow down your options.

Private Charter Deep Sea Fishing Cost

Private deep sea fishing charters can cost anywhere between $165 and $2,600. They typically allow up to 6 people on the boat at a time, but you will need to double-check how many people they allow at a time when you book the trip for you and your group. Private deep sea fishing charter prices vary depending on how long the trip is, and what kind of fish you are trying to catch. If a popular species is in season, the price might be even higher.

Public Charter Deep Sea Fishing Cost

Public deep sea fishing charters tend to be a little bit cheaper than private options. Public charters cost anywhere between $90 and $200. These prices will vary depending on how long the trip is, what fish you are trying to catch, and how many people are going to be on the boat at one time. Most public charters charge by the person rather than the charter.

If you are looking to book a chartered fishing trip Fishingbooker.com is a website that has thousand of charters all over the world. It’s the airbnb of the fishing world and a great resource to book fishing trips with local guides.

What is the Difference Between Private and Public Fishing Charters?

deep sea fishing trip price

There are a few differences between private and public deep sea fishing charters. The main difference between them is the number of people they allow on the boat at one time. Most private deep sea fishing charters only allow up to 6 people on the boat at a time, other than the captain of the ship and the deckhand. On the other hand, public deep sea fishing charters will allow as many people on the boat as will comfortably fit.

If you are going on a deep sea fishing charter with a lot of people, then you should probably go on a public deep sea fishing charter rather than a private one as then you can ensure that you go deep sea fishing with all the people in your group. If you go on a private deep sea fishing charter, you may not be able to go deep sea fishing with all of your family members and friends.

Private deep sea fishing charters are also typically more expensive than public deep sea fishing charters, but you also have a more individualized experience and can ensure that you will be on the boat with only the people you choose rather than with strangers. Plus, if you go on a private deep sea fishing charter, services tend to charge per person rather than per group.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

deep sea fishing trip price

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

deep sea fishing trip price

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

deep sea fishing trip price

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

deep sea fishing trip price

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

deep sea fishing trip price

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

deep sea fishing trip price

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

deep sea fishing trip price

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

1/2 Day Trip

Fishing in Miami

This trip is fishing for monsters. The targeted species are Cubera Snapper, Goliath Grouper and Sharks. This is the ultimate big game trip next to Sword fishing which I offer as a day trip. This trip is about focussing on catching huge fish hanging around ship wrecks. The bait consists of whole fish with the average bait weighing around 5 pounds. The gear used are big game set ups, butt rods, 50 or 80 Penn International 2 speeds spooled with 100 lb braided line, followed by 600 lb test leader to 400 lb wire leader, ending with two giant 18/0 hooks. The trip is aboard, Posiedon, my new 36’ Yellowfin center console. This boat is the ultimate in offshore, big game boats. Powered with triple 275 hp Mercury Verados, it is very fast and handles like a Lamborgini. Yellowfin is hands down the sexiest center console ever made and they haven’t changed the hull design in over a decade. The sexy hull design pushes water away from the boat making it very dry as water rarely ever comes over the rail. The hull design also provides a stable base for handling the roughest Seas. The tricked out lighting includes 6 blue underwater lights making it epic for night fishing. The brand new computer systems consists of 2 completely independent systems. The first is a 12” Garmin chart plotter with radar, GPS and a fish finder that will tell you what type of fish it is at 2000’ deep! The second system is a 12” Raymarine chart plotter with 4’ open array radar, GPS, adaptive autopilot and fish finder with side scan sonar. The Fusion BT sound system will keep the tunes and good times going. There is a head on the boat for girls and emergencies. Captain BrYan has thousands of marked fishing spots on the computers and is offshore at night about 3-5 times a week. His extensive knowledge of the Ocean, Haulover Inlet and the Intercostal Water Ways will keep you safe in any situation. The Miami Beach skyline is epic at night from a boat. There aren’t too many places in the World where you can deep Sea fish a couple miles from shore and see such a beautiful city scene. Fishing for monsters, offshore, at night in the open Ocean while enjoying the beautiful view of Miami is something all fisher persons must experience. Captain BrYan has everything you need, just bring your food and drinks, beer and glass bottles are perfectly fine too! There will be bottled waters in a cooler with ice for you on the boat. Usually Sharks are catch and release with the average fish weighing over 300 lbs. If you want to harvest a Shark that is legal, then please let Captain BrYan know prior to the day of the trip. Shark cleaning fees start at $50 and go up depending on size. Goliath Grouper is catch and release only, unless you have won a tag from FWC in the annual drawing. If you have one of these tags, please let Captain BrYan know when you book the trip. Cubera Snapper are delicious and can be harvested. Complimentary cleaning for Cuberas under 20lbs, fish over 20 lbs are $25 each to be cleaned. Vacuum packing service is provided for an additional fee to be determined depending on size of catch. This trip is for everyone, especially children and beginners! Read More

So if all else fails, which is rarely the case, Captain Christopher will make sure you get back to the dock with a cooler full of fish! Captain Christophers' brand new Dusky Center Console is 29 feet from propellor to bow. The whole front of the boat is a padded lounge area, making this charter great for families and avid fishermen alike! Not to mention, she comes loaded with everything you could possibly need for a successful day out on the water from rods, reels, and tackle, to fishing licenses, ice, soft drinks and water! All you need to bring are some snacks and your shades, Captain Christopher will take care of the rest! One note is that you will get bait after meeting at the dock. You and Captain Chris can try and go out and catch the bait yourselves but it is also available for purchase. Captain Chris likes to tell his clients: "If time is of the essence, rather than burn time messing around catching bait, there are plenty of guys selling bait as we leave the dock and the 20-40$ is often well-spent cash head straight out to the bigger fish." But like everything else with Captain Chris, the decision is up to you! Read More

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

  • Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
