Marcus Mumford of the band Mumford & Sons performs in concert during the opening night of the North America leg of their "Delta Tour" at The Wells Fargo Center, in PhiladelphiaMumford and Sons In Concert - , Philadelphia, USA - 07 Dec 2018

Mumford & Sons have come a long way from their raw and rustic roots to have happily come no way at all.  Even though the British quartet smoothed and softened elements of the rough, intimate folk of their 2007 origin story to include flickering arena-rock guitars (on 2015’s “Wilder Mind”) and windy synths (2018’s “Delta”), their newest gigs stress the same homey, confidential vibe as  in the past. Even the tales of death and discord that “Delta” brings to Mumford’s joyous lyrical mien seem gleeful when played with a familial smile.

When Mumford & Sons opened their U.S. tour at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on Friday night, it was as if the hooting and plucking ensemble were busking outside an aged London pub. It was a really nice pub, with pricey lighting, but still.

Barrel-chested vocalist Marcus Mumford wasted no time in making the rectangular, arena-centered stage his own. When he wasn’t commencing concert proceedings with the hard-strummed, slow-building “Guiding Light,” the main Mumford was running to man sets of drums (on “Lover of the Night”), leap into crowds, flash video cameras at the audience and beam like a genial host. He wasn’t ham-fisted or unsubtle about his outward reach (a la the similar-sounding Chris Martin). It was as if Mumford had opened his arms wider than usual to embrace his crowd, and they flocked and nestled comfortably, even to his surprise. “You guys are amazing,” he told the Philly audience, with what seemed like genuine shock, awe and warmth.

Popular on Variety

Returning to that “similar sounding” comment: In turning its subtly contagious choruses epic and electric, elements of Mumford & Sons’ melodies came across in that grey area between U2 and Coldplay. What M&S have done to cloak that grand flange in concert is heighten the roles of its usual folksy tools, and occasionally put them through FX pedals. Now, fast banjos (courtesy Winston Marshall), bright brass and searing violin replace the delay-heavy chime so familiar to the Edge and his possible influence on “Babel” and “Guiding Light.”

Ted Dwane’s aggressively plucking of a double bass while Ben Lovett hammered a piano through the coda of “Little Lion Man” gave that song a feel of elevation and propulsion familiar to Cold2 (or UPlay), but without Bono’s dogged earnestness. Instead, a craggy Mumford yelled out highly personal refrigerator magnet poetry (“Your grace is wasted in your face / Your boldness stands alone among the wreck / Now learn from your mother / Or else spend your days biting your own neck”) while pounding out a rhythm with a drum’s foot pedal.

Hewing close to their folksy beginnings meant homey touches on gently torrid tunes such as an unplugged “Timshel,” where all gathered around one microphone, or bringing back opening act Maggie Rogers to give the spiritualized “Awake My Soul” a rounder, sensual feel.

Utilizing a primarily all-white lighting rig during the show gave the entire concert a naked purity, and turned the long, stark plane of the stage with its winged sides into a cross between a boxing square and an abandoned ship. That newer songs such as a shivering “The Wild” touched upon a sense of finality (“We saw birth and death / Can’t we be still … I think it’s the wild / Puts the fear of God in me”) put baritone singer Mumford’s wispy highs, raspy lows and ponderous yelps into lonelier perspective. He wasn’t just singing to rouse, as he had in the past. Mumford was singing to plead and to pray.

That doesn’t mean that Mumford & Sons played the entire show as if standing by a campfire in a coffeehouse, or kneeling in a chapel. Instead, they brought the boldly audacious, widescreen electronica of “Delta” down to the bite-sized, while cranking up the volume and power chords of their older tunes.

Though overlong and ripe, the new album’s title track concluded the night’s proceedings with the proper amount of wave-crashing cymbals and breathy vocalizing. Another new cut, “Picture You,” started off as a sultry synth-ballad with a click track and wound up in a cacophony of noise and figurative and literal fireworks. The lowest of “Delta’s” lo-fi numbers, “Darkness Visible,” was good, old-fashioned, loud garage rock with a shiny piano plink. That sort of glowing force helped Mumford & Sons to get truly jiggy with a rustic “The Cave” and the hyper-Celtic “Roll Away Your Stone,” while enhancing guitarist Marshall’s mix of stinging leads and Duane Eddy-ish twang during “Tompkins Square Park.”

Mumford even allowed himself to shout out Philadelphia football lore for the Super Bowl-winning Eagles when he stated that the quiet but stormy “Believe” was about that very championship game. “Actually, it’s about soccer. They’re all about soccer, really.”

For all that was epic and earthen about Mumford & Sons on Friday, they never outstretched or overstayed their welcome. Each tune was punctual and neatly tucked beneath a bedrock of rumbling rhythms, taut brass, soulful violin (courtesy Tom Hobden), elegant keyboard and guitar structures — all so that Mumford could wail, want, hail and hoorah.

There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Move over, Pete Townshend!

Delta Airlines has been accused of “purposefully” smashing a musician’s Martin acoustic guitar after she found the instrument’s splintered remains in its hard case following her flight.

Unlike rock legend Townshend — guitarist for The Who who destroyed more than 35 guitars in 1967 alone — Madi Diaz, 37, was shocked to find her own string instrument had met the same fate.

Delta Airlines has been accused of “purposefully” smashing a musician's Martin acoustic guitar after she found the instrument’s splintered remains in its hard case following her flight.

“Truly devastated by the damage done by @Delta to my 20-year-old martin guitar,” Diaz wrote on X.

“So many memories just gone. Absolutely beyond devastated. Please repost. @Delta needs to be held responsible.”

A group of people on a stage

In a video accompanying the tweet, Diaz panned over the broken guitar showing the extent of the damage while reminiscing on the memories she shared while playing it — including touring with Harry Styles.

“Delta, this is unfathomable and just so devastating,” the singer said in the short video posted along with detailed photographs.

“This is completely unfixable. I will never play this guitar again and I’m just absolutely shocked at the treatment of this instrument.”

The instrument was found destroyed in its hard case following her flight.

In an Instagram story, she wrote: ”From my dorm room in college to stages with @Harry_Styles this guitar has been with me through ALL OF IT.”

Diaz had also taped Styles’ song “Medicine” to the guitar so she could remember it during her performance — with the paper left in shreds.

“20 years of memories — all the tours and records and songs written on this guitar. Shattered by carelessness. I’m absolutely heartbroken,” Diaz added.

In a video accompanying the tweet, Diaz panned over the broken guitar showing the extent of the damage while reminiscing on the memories she shared while playing it — including touring with Harry Styles.

In the 39-second clip, Diaz noted that a red “Fragile” sticker on the case appeared to have been “scratched off purposefully” while X users echoed her fury.

“It literally looks like someone did this on purpose to @madidiaz guitar…how does this happen?” fellow singer Jamie Floyd replied.

“This is the way she makes her living..and someone smashed it in..on your watch. Make this right.”

Diaz had also taped Styles’ song “Medicine” to the guitar so she could remember it during her performance — with the paper left in shreds.

“It was even in a solid hard shell case. Damage like this is not accidental by any means.. you have to try to do that,” another added in the comments.

Delta apologized to Diaz on X for the “long wait” for its response and asked the singer to contact it in a private message.

The airline also issued a statement to the Sun saying, “Delta apologizes to Madi for the damage to her instrument.”

“We’re in contact with her team to try to make this right,” they added in the statement.

The Post reached out to both Delta and Diaz for comment.

Her guitar was smashed on a Delta flight a day before opening for Kacey Musgraves. The internet rallied around her.

Indie artist Madi Diaz discovered Delta Airlines ruined her guitar a day before kicking off tour with Kacey Musgraves. The internet rallied for a response. Musicians say it's a common issue.

A day before kicking off her 14-day European tour opening for Kacey Musgraves, indie artist Madi Diaz opened her guitar case after landing in Dublin. But she called what she found inside “unfathomable” and “devastating.”

In photos and videos posted on social media, Diaz shows her 20-year-old Martin acoustic guitar significantly damaged, with cracks throughout the body, large gashes and holes on the sides and back, and the wood splintered throughout.

The posts went viral, sparking a grassroots campaign among fans and fellow musicians for Delta Airlines to make things right. It’s also prompted a new wave of dialogue from musicians about how difficult it can be to fly on any airline with gear because of issues with checking guitars, drums, horns, and more.

Diaz, 37, is a singer-songwriter from Nashville who has been on the scene since the early aughts, touring with The Civil Wars. She grew up in Lancaster County, where she began her music career. Her songs were featured on shows like Pretty Little Liars . In 2009, she was named one of SXSW’s “ buzziest acts ” by Paste Magazine. In early 2023, Diaz joined Harry Styles’ “Love On Tour” band as a guitar and backing vocalist for the show’s European leg.

Her now-mangled Martin acoustic guitar was by her side through it all, she said. Taped to its side, it still has handwritten lyrics to Styles’ song, “Medicine,” which Diaz jotted down on tour to make sure she would get them right.

“From my dorm room in college to stages with Harry Styles, this guitar has been with me through all of it,” Diaz wrote on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. “I’m truly devastated by the treatment of my instrument. Insurmountable loss. I don’t know how to begin to replace something like this.”

In the aftermath, Diaz documented the damage on social media, tagging the airline and asking others to do the same. Musicians, including Musgraves — who sang on Diaz’s 2023 song, “Don’t Do Me Good” — shared it, too. Diaz’s initial post was viewed nearly 2 million times on X alone.

“I bought the most heavy duty case I could find,” Diaz wrote. “My theory for 20 years was that our instruments are meant to travel to help tell our stories. Lesson learned? I’m not in the position to financially handle renting gear wherever I go — but I’m also not in the position to lose so much.”

Diaz isn’t the only artist conflicted about the best way to tour.

For years, musicians have complained about airlines mishandling their gear, the high costs that come with traveling with instruments, and the risks involved. Besides often being expensive, musical instruments also often come with high sentimental value. Damages can bring their value down and impact a musician’s bottom line, since they need their gear to perform.

“We grow up knowing the instrument itself has a soul and you bond with it. You spend all those years in a practice room all alone, except for your feelings and psychology and your instrument – it has a bonding quality,” cellist Lynn Harrell told the Guardian in 2020. “So when something happens to the instrument monetarily, that’s one thing. But the feeling that as a custodian of an instrument with hundreds of years of life, you failed – that is a scar on your soul for the rest of your life.”

Harrell said he used to check his cello, but the risk became too great. He’s since started buying the instrument its own seat next to him on flights — an increasingly common tactic that can be safer, but is cost-prohibitive and can sometimes result in confusion

Musicians say it’s a Catch-22 when they’re trying to tour.

Tim Hildebrand, who plays guitar for the Philadelphia ska group, Catbite , says Diaz’s experience reminded him of several of his own.

In recent years, Catbite has frequently toured internationally, flying to Japan, Australia, and Europe. This year, the band has already flown over 40 times.

“It’s super stressful with trying to find the cheapest way to get your stuff from point A to B, and with trying to figure out what the airline’s policy is,” Hildebrand said. Catbite typically checks its gear in hard-shelled cases made for travel. “We just keep our fingers crossed that our gear isn’t in shreds or lost when we get to our final destination.”

But despite his efforts to protect his gear, Hildebrand’s fears came true in Heathrow Airport last year during the band’s first United Kingdom tour, when his guitar was nowhere to be found.

“It took an hour to finish making a claim. I had to borrow a guitar for our first show,” Hildebrand said. “Luckily, they found it about 30 hours later. And super luckily, we were still in the London area and we were able to get it so I’d have a guitar for the tour.”

Diaz has said the damages to her guitar are irreparable. A rep for Diaz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a statement, a Delta spokesperson said the airline was in touch with Diaz’s team.

“We apologize to Madi for the damage to her instrument,” the statement said. “We are continuing our review of this event and remain in contact with her team to make it right and in resolving any outstanding items.”
