Did you know

  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.

Every new Star Trek show boldly goes, but Star Trek: Discovery had the unenviable position of going first in the Paramount Plus explosion of new Star Trek TV. And if the the first clips from the upcoming fifth and final season — revealed during today’s Star Trek panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 — have anything to say, the series is going to boldly go out with a bang.

The clip, an action sequence with little context of what lead up to it, follows Captain Michael Burnham as she is flung from a tense confrontation in the halls of a wrecked spaceship to piggybacking on the hull of a craft as it leaps into warp.

Season 5 of Discovery began filming last June, with the expectation of a premiere in early 2023. This March, however, Paramount both announced that it would be the final season of the show and that its premiere would be pushed out to early 2024. Stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, David Ajala are expected to return as the crew of the starship Discovery for adventures in the far future time (even for Star Trek) of the 3200s.

Also, according to this new clip, David Cronenberg (yes, the actual David Cronenberg) will reprise his recurring role as the Federation expert Doctor Kovich.

Everything that we know about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

We go back to the future with a look at what lies ahead for Michael Burnham and her crew in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5

  • Release date
  • Returning characters

If you want to avoid spoilers, look away now!

In four seasons the crew of the starship U.S.S. Discovery have started and ended a war with the Klingons, ventured into the Mirror Universe, escaped an evil artificial intelligence by travelling 900 years into the future , solved the mystery of The Burn and restored the United Federation of Planets, defeated the Emerald Chain, and travelled beyond our galaxy to make first contact with species 10-C, in doing so saving Earth and Ni’Var from the Dark Matter Anomaly.

Phew! Surely the crew, led by Captain Michael Burnham, now deserve a break? Not on your life, and they’ll be back for a fifth season of adventure, mystery, and danger that’s set to premiere on Paramount+ in early 2023.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 release date

The fifth season was commissioned by Paramount in January 2022, with filming beginning on 13 June . Only 10 episodes were commissioned, following the trend of Discovery’s seasons growing shorter (season 1 had 15 episodes, season 2 had 14 episodes, and seasons 3 and 4 had 13 episodes each).

After the superb fourth season , possibly the best season of modern (i.e. since 2017) Star Trek so far, season 5 has a lot to live up to. While no premiere date has been confirmed yet, all signs point to the first quarter of 2023.

What will Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 be about?

USS Discovery spaceship

Plot details are scarce, but based on comments from one of the show’s producers, we can surmise what direction season 5 might head in.

Upon their arrival in the 32nd century in season 3, the crew of Discovery found a fractured galaxy; a mysterious event called The Burn had destroyed almost all the dilithium crystals in the galaxy. Dilithium is the key ingredient for warp engines, and its loss rendered long-range warp travel impossible, resulting in major worlds being cut off from one another. The Federation dissolved and what remained of Starfleet went into hiding. Discovery’s crew was able to solve the mystery of The Burn, and the process of rebuilding the United Federation of Planets could begin.

By the end of season 4, both Earth and Ni’Var (more familiar to us as Vulcan, renamed since the reunification between the Vulcans and the Romulans) had rejoined the Federation. With warp travel now restored, and the Federation relatively whole, Starfleet can get back to the business of exploring the galaxy, rather than being forced to react to a steady stream of threats.

Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery saw the show really find its story-telling confidence to allow it to embody the human spirit that Star Trek is famed for. Olatunde Osunsanmi, who is a director and producer on Star Trek: Discovery, has told ScreenRant that while season 5 will not involve time travel, it “will go back into the past to get farther into the future,” alluding to the show pulling influences from the exploration-driven nature of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Which characters are returning?

Scenes from episode 3 of

Captain Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, will of course be back, joined by series regulars Captain Saru (the excellent Doug Jones ), Astromycologist Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ), Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), Chief Engineer Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), and Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio).

At the end of season 4, Burnham’s love interest, Cleveland ‘Book’ Booker (David Ajala), was sentenced to community service for his role in Ruon Tarka’s plan to destroy the Dark Matter Anomaly against Federation orders. However, Martin-Green has alluded that Book (and his Maine Coon cat, Grudge ) will return in season 5 to continue his relationship with Burnham.

It is also hoped that recurring characters Lieutenant Commander Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts), Lieutenant Commander Joann Owosekun ( Oyin Oladejo ), Lieutenant Ronald Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.), Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr, an actor familiar to audiences as Ardeth Bay in The Mummy movies alongside Brendan Fraser), Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal), and Gray Tal (Ian Alexander) will also be back.

There’s also a big question mark over Tilly’s role. In season 4 she departed Discovery to teach at Starfleet Academy, although we also saw her working with Vance during the evacuation of Earth in the season 4 finale. Will she remain at the Academy, or keep working with Admiral Vance, and how will her role in Starfleet tie into season 5’s currently top-secret plot?

Sylvia Tilly from Star Trek Discovery (season 3).

With Earth and Ni’Var having now both rejoined the Federation, what of the other major powers in the galaxy? We’ve seen Ferengi serving in 32nd century Starfleet and among the dignitaries sent to make first contact with species 10-C, but what of the Klingons, the Cardassians, the Bajorans, and the Dominion, among others, in this era? They’ve had name checks so far – will season 5 be the season when we see their 32nd century incarnations?

Finally, there’s the wild card of the ship’s computer, Zora (voiced by Annabelle Wallis), which gained sentience during season 4, leading to some brief problems as Zora adjusted to her new individualism and her aims that sometimes led counter to the crew’s goals. Will Zora continue to develop as a personality in season 5, and will that once again put her into conflict with the crew?

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Release Date Window, Cast, Trailer and Plot for the Series Finale

Here's what we know so far about Discovery Season 5.

The final moments of 'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 4.

The Starship Discovery has come home. Star Trek’s flagship show will end with Discovery Season 5. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming series finale, including release date info, the cast, plot, and more.

How did Discovery season 4 end?

The biggest news from the Season 4 Disco finale is easily the fact that the planet Earth has now rejoined the Federation. Previously, in Season 3, after time traveling to the 32nd century from the 23rd, the crew of Discovery learned Earth had split off from the Federation following the galaxy-wide cataclysm of the Burn. But now, after solving the Burn mystery last season, and averting the planet-crushing DMA this season, Earth is now back in the Federation.

We also learned that the headquarters of the Federation, previously a stationary starbase, is also a giant starship . Showrunner Michelle Paradise told Inverse how the writers decided to make this starbase fly:

“It felt like an organic capability of the ship coming out of the Burn [in Season 3.] It having that capability made sense, given the time and the environment. Then the question was when do we show that and in what story do we make that capability known? Flying to help rescue people from Earth felt like wow — what an awesome way to show that that FHQ [Federation Headquarters] can can travel in that way.”

Who is in the cast for Discovery Season 5?

The assumption right now is that the vast majority of the existing cast will return. That would include:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • David Ajala as Clevland Booker
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr. Culber
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Tilly
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Stamets
  • Ian Alexander as Gray Tal
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira Tal
  • Tig Notaro as Jett Reno
  • Oyin Oladejo as Joann Owosekun
  • Emily Coutts as Keyla Detmer
  • Sara Mitich as Nilsson
  • Patrick Kwok-Choon as Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe Jr. as Ronald A. Bryce
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich
  • Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance
  • Annabelle Wallis as the voice of Zora
  • Tara Rosling as President T’Rina
  • Phumzile Sitole as General Ndoye
  • Orville Cummings as Lt. Christopher
  • David Benjamin Tomlinson as Linus
  • Chelah Horsdal as President Rillak
  • Hiro Kanagawa as Dr. Hirai
  • Eve Harlow as Moll
  • Elias Toufexis as L’ak
  • Callum Keith Rennie as Captain Rayner

Whether or not Stacey Abrams will reprise her cameo as the President of Earth is unclear.

Discovery Season 5 trailer

The first trailer for Discovery Season 5 was released at New York Comic-Con in 2022. It teases an expansive galaxy-wide treasure hunt, with stakes that feel massive.

Discovery Season 5 release date

Although it was initially expected that Discovery Season 5 would hit in 2023, Paramount revealed on March 2, 2023, that Discovery Season 5 would actually hit in early 2024, and that this season would be the final season for the series.

View on Instagram

What is the Discovery Season 5 plot?

The cast and creative team of Discovery have been very tight-lipped about the tone and style of Season 5. When Inverse asked Michelle Paradise about Kovich (David Cronenberg), Klingons, and more in Season 5, she politely declined to comment, saying, “I can’t say anything about Season 5.”

Wilson Cruz has mentioned that the “tone” of Season 5 will “shift again” from Season 4, but also noted that thematic changes in between Discovery seasons is something “we usually do.”

Some fans suspect that Discovery Season 5 will have more action centered on Earth since the revelation that Earth has returned to the Federation was so central to the Season 4 finale. Then again, Captain Burnham does talk to the President about more worlds that need exploring, so like the ending of Season 4, Discovery Season 5 has a pretty clean slate.

discovery star trek new season

Stacey Abrams and Sonequa Martin-Green in the Discovery Season 4 finale.

Season 5 is the end of Discovery

Back in 2022, it wasn’t clear how long Discovery would run beyond Season 4. However, in 2021, Doug Jones told Inverse that Discovery did start with a “5-year plan,” and now it seems that the show will, indeed end after five seasons. (Although in the end, all of the DISCO seasons will span seven years.)

Still, whatever “5-year-plan” laid out back in 2016 or 2017 when the show first was created, is surely not the path the series is on now. Series co-creator Bryan Fuller left before Discovery began filming, and Season 1 and Season 2 showrunners, Aaron Harberts, and Gretchen Berg were eventually replaced by Michelle Paradise for the latter half of Season 2 up until the present.

As of this writing, it also appears that Season 5 becoming the ending for Discovery may be a retroactive decision. Although filming is reportedly complete, the Hollywood Reporter claims that “there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series.”

What that means for the final adventures of Captain Burnham and the crew of the Discovery , for now, remains a mystery that can only be answered in the future.

It's finally here! Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery , the crew's final outing, has officially started on Paramount Plus .

Alongside Martin-Green, the series also stars cast members Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, David Ajala, Blu del Barrio and Callum Keith Rennie.

Production on season 5 wrapped in November 2022, but additional filming took place to make sure the series is sent off in style.

Recently chatting to RadioTimes.com , actress Martin-Green said of the final season: "I think one of our central themes that makes us who we are is change – that sense of upward mobility and character evolution.

More like this

" Star Trek : Discovery is a show that transformed, season to season - but each and every character did as well.

"That was one of our main selling points in the very beginning: you're gonna have people who are not fully baked, and you're gonna get to watch them become who they're destined to be. You're gonna get to watch them make mistakes, and confront them, and grow because of them."

Here's everything you need to know about the release of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 release date

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will premiere on Thursday 4th April . Two episodes will be released at once with the rest airing weekly on Thursdays.

The show was officially renewed for season 5 in January 2022, with the series continuing to be one of the top performers on streaming service Paramount Plus .

It'll be the fifth and final season for the popular show, with star Martin-Green previously issuing a statement of thanks.

The actress said: "I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Star Trek: Discovery is ending.

"I'm astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team."

The actress went on to thank CBS Studios and Paramount Plus, "who insisted on making television history".

The cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 stood in a line and looking at the camera

"I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of Trek with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans," she added.

"The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek, and an entire entertainment platform, and we'll never forget it.

"Sixty-five episodes later, here's to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let's fly… "

Who stars in Star Trek: Discovery season 5?

The principal members are all expected to return, led by Sonequa Martin-Green in the lead role of Discovery's Captain Burnham.

It's likely she will be reunited with actor and contortionist Doug Jones in the prosthetic-heavy role of Saru, the first Kelpien to join the ranks of Starfleet.

Other actors in the Star Trek: Discovery supporting cast include Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly, Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber and Tig Notaro as Jett Reno.

Six years later, Star Trek: Discovery has saved the galaxy multiple times; traveled through the mycelial network, to the Mirror Universe and back, forward in time nine hundred years , and beyond the edge of the known universe; and spawned the highly successful spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

In March, Paramount+ announced the fifth season will be the USS Discovery's final mission. We've gathered all the intel on what it'll entail, who's on board, and when you can expect to buckle up and hold on as Michael Burnham and her crew let 'er fly one last time.

Star Trek: Discovery S5: Everything We Know

What can we expect from the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 plot?

After making first contact with an extra-dimensional species and convincing them to stop sending their galactic mineral extractor through our galaxy, destroying planets and star systems willy-nilly, you'd think our intrepid time-traveling spacefarers would've earned a rest.

But no, the teaser for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 hints at a treasure hunt for a sought-after power that could -- you guessed it -- destroy the universe.

According to Paramount+, " The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. "

Of course, it's not so easy as just following the clues and bringing it home. There have to be obstacles and competitors. " But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it. "

Who will be a part of the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 cast?

All of the core cast from Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 are expected to return for this last hurrah.

United Earth President - Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 13

Cast Members Returning for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

That certainly includes Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Chief Science Officer Saru (Doug Jones), Chief Medical Officer Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Adira (Blu del Barrio).

We also expect to see the return of recurring characters Starfleet Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) and Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal), although probably not the United Earth President (Stacey Freakin' Abrams -- yeah, that actually happened) due to other obligations.

It's unlikely Burnham would embark without her bridge crew, so Lieutenants Detmer (Emily Coutts), Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo), Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Bryce (Ronnie Rowe), and Nilsson (Sara Mitich) should all be present and accounted for at launch.

And no Discovery adventure would be complete without Lt. Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson) repping the Saurians and Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) showing up for curmudgeons everywhere.

L'ak and Malinne Ravel - Star Trek: Discovery

In addition, the footage that we've seen from Season 5 indicates Kovich (David Cronenberg) will be central to the plot's action. That looks like fun.

New Cast Members for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Newcomers L'ak ( The Expanse 's Elias Toufexis) and Moll ( The Night Agent 's Eve Harlow) are exciting additions to the cast, competing with Burnham's crew on this treasure hunt.

Having seen Harlow hunt on The Night Agent as assassin Ellen, they could definitely prove problematic.

Harlow's Moll is described as "highly intelligent and dangerous, with an impressive strategic mind and a sharp wit. She goes into every situation with a clear plan and stays focused and clear-headed on her goal, even when things go awry.

"She’s not intimidated by Captain Burnham or the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery and will face down anyone who stands in her way in order to get what she wants."

Sci-fi fan favorite Callum Keith Rennie as Vulcan Starfleet officer Raynor will also be spending time with us in space.

From The Umbrella Academy to Jessica Jones to The Man in the High Castle, Rennie consistently owns his space with confident intensity and will be someone to watch as the season unfolds.

Who is the Main Villain of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Now that the strike is over I can finally share this: I have my own #StarTrek ship! That's absolutely bonkers to me brain. #StarTrekDiscovery pic.twitter.com/SKQREtWNhm — ᴇʟɪᴀꜱ ᴛᴏᴜꜰᴇxɪꜱ 🖖 (@EliasToufexis) November 9, 2023

Elias Toufexis has been quick to announce to the world that he, an avid Trek fan, has his own Star Trek ship, crowing about it on social media as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strike ended.

At the 57-Year Mission Convention in Las Vegas, Toufexis confirmed that L'ak is Season 5's "main villain."

La'k is the romantic in the duo, it seems, described as "tough, impulsive and fiercely protective of his beloved partner, Moll. So long as he knows she’s safe, he doesn’t care about collateral damage or its consequences."

How many episodes will there be in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5?

The March press release revealed that the entirety of Star Trek: Discovery will consist of 65 episodes. Seeing as the Season 4 finale was the 55th episode in the series, we can deduce that Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 will be ten episodes long.

Will the writers' and actors' strikes affect the release of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5?

Paramount+ renewed Star Trek: Discovery for its fifth season in January 2022. Production began in June of that year, and the entire season was considered complete before the end of 2022.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Cast Photo

The announcement in March 2023 that Season 5 would be the final season caught the production team by surprise. It required executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi to return to Toronto to shoot new scenes to transform the season finale into a series finale.

All this was done before the strikes began, and the season is, as they say, in the can and ready for release.

When will Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 premiere?

At the Paramount+ panel at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, they announced that Season 5 will return in April 2024.

In addition, an exciting new trailer and cast image was released.

How will Star Trek: Discovery end?

There are no crystal balls or time portals to consult, but long-time fans will recall that we've already seen what happens to the USS Discovery and her sentient computer, Zora, after the crew is gone.

There is no cushy place in a Starfleet museum for Zora, and it's unlikely she'd be happy there anyway.

On Star Trek: Short Treks Season 1 Episode 2 , long after she'd grown used to solitude, Zora picks up a man adrift in space and saves his life.

In a parallel tale to the story of Odysseus on Calypso's island -- note the minisode is also titled "Calypso" -- the man, Craft, grows to love his rescuer but ultimately has to leave her.

Calypso S'Wonderful - Star Trek: Discovery

So, will we see the crew abandon Discovery as part of their mission to find this ancient power?

Will our intrepid heroes splinter their paths and seek new worlds and strange pursuits?

Can the Federation and Starfleet remain aspirational as an entity wholly independent of Earth or any planet?

Who will save the galaxy when Burnham and Saru and their posse resign their commission?

While you mull these and many other questions, check out the footage from Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Paramount+ released at SDCC 2023.

Is there enough action there to tide you over until the premiere?

Can Burnham keep up this adventuring pace? Will Kovich suit up and show her how it's done?

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 potential release date, cast, plot, and everything you need to know

Who's coming back?

preview for Star Trek: Discovery season 4 official trailer (Paramount)

Star Trek: Discovery spoilers follow.

While it may not have been the easiest series to watch if you're based in the UK (you can thank licensing awkwardness for that), Star Trek: Discovery finally has a long-standing home at Paramount+ alongside its franchise brothers and sisters, Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Strange New World s , Star Trek: Lower Decks , and Star Trek: Prodigy .

Now it's just a waiting game for the latest instalments. So when are we going to see Star Trek: Discovery's next outing? And what can we expect? Here's everything you need to know.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 potential release date - When will it air?

david ajala as cleveland booker, sonequa martin green as burnham, star trek discovery

Star Trek: Discovery season five was given the green light in January 2022, as part of a mega announcement regarding the future of the Star Trek Universe.

Alongside the announcement, it was revealed Picard will end with season three, and Strange New Worlds has been renewed for season two.

Unfortunately, beyond this, there's been no indication as to when it will be back on our screens. Even the previous series doesn't have a rough regular release slot, so we don't have that to go on.

Season 1 was released in September 2017, season two launched in January 2019, season three was in October 2020 and season four was in November 2021. See? No real correlation.

However, keeping with the show's tradition to get a series out once a year, we can hope that season five will land on our screens toward the end of 2022 but early 2023 is more likely.

We'll keep you updated when we know more.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 cast – Who's in it?

star trek discovery season 3, saru doug jones raising his right hand

While an official cast list hasn't been disclosed just yet, Sonequa Martin-Green has already confirmed she will be back in the lead role of Captain Michael Burnham.

As for the rest of the cast, we would expect all of your favourites to return, including Doug Jones as the starfleet Kelpien, Saru, Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly, David Ajala as Cleveland 'Book' Booker, Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber and Tig Notaro as Jett Reno.

Then there's always the potential for some news faces to join too.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 plot – What will happen?

star trek discovery season 3 artwork featuring david ajala as cleveland "book" booker and sonequa martin green as michael burnham

Of course, the premise for season five is firmly under wraps, but now that season four is finished, we can start to theorise what lies around the next star system.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy , Sonequa Martin-Green said: "I can say that it's going to be refreshing. It's going to be invigorating. And I think it's going to be lovely – in the truest sense of the word."

She also suggested there will be a bigger attachment coming our way in terms of the Booker/Burnham romance, saying the pair will "always be tied together in some way".

Well... consider us intrigued!

"I think it's very much what they say in that last moment they have together in [the finale] – that Kwejian quote. It's very much that," she said.

The "Kwejian quote" (as in the language of Book’s homeworld) was "Kwakoni Yiquan", which we previously learned translates to: "We've parted a hundred times, may we part to rejoin a hundred more."

Which is very sweet, but also doesn't suggest an easy road for them to be endgame.

In season four, the series was focused on the emergence of a mysterious new life form later known as Species 10-C, as well as Ruon Tarka's (Shawn Doyle) villainous plan to put the whole universe at risk.

At the end of the season four finale, viewers saw the crew take control of the Species 10-C crisis and Earth and Ni'Var avoid the destruction of the Dark Matter Anomaly, or DMA. As a result, the United Federation Planets welcomed Earth back.

Will Earth's return to the Federation mean that season five could feature more terrestrial action?

The show's director, Olatunde Osunsanmi, has revealed that season five will actually be combining new and old elements from the iconic franchise as way to capture the essence of the original series. Trekkers rejoice!

"The galaxy's a big place where incredible things can happen. Season five is shaping up to be... all I can say is that – it's not time travel – but we go back into the past to get further into the future," he told Screen Rant .

"There's this old version of Star Trek that exists. And this new version that's been created by Alex but there's a lot of things we still love about the old version.

"So it's about pulling from there... not necessarily stories or characters but more themes, and process, and how those stories are told and applying it to what we do in the future. And that includes [Burnham's] character and things she does as a Captain."

But what about Doug Jones' key character, Saru?

"We are on another quest. We're after something, and bad guys are after it. Who gets to it first, that's basically where we're headed," Jones said (via Space.com ) And for Saru? Let's remember all of season four, when I was a first officer with captain's status. Is that a long-term position, for a captain, who loves being at the right hand of Captain Burnham?"

"Again, she's like a sister to me. We support each other. I want to be there for her through thick and thin, but on my uniform, I'm also wearing a pin that has the Kelpien Council emblem on it. I do, often, when I'm thinking, stop and fold my arms, and give a stroke to my Kelpien pin to remind me about home; home comforts me, and I long for home."

"As you’ve discovered with Star Trek: Discovery , every season has a new flare, a new flavor, and a new obstacle to overcome. Season five is no different. There are some new characters and some new adventures," Jones said (via Collider ).

So far, so vague – but it does sound like Saru will have a meaty plotline in season five. Jones certainly seems happy with what’s in store for everyone's favourite Kelpien.

"Change is always afoot, for the story and for the characters, individually, and Saru is included in that. My biggest concern, going into season five, was, 'Will my romance with President T’Rina, my lovely Vulcan lady, still continue?' I was happy to hear the answer, but I’ll let you figure out what that is, when you see season five."

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 – How to watch in the UK?

As we mentioned further up, Star Trek: Discovery finally has a long-standing home at Paramount+ alongside its franchise brothers and sisters, Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Strange New World s , Star Trek: Lower Decks , and Star Trek: Prodigy.

The show premiered on CBS All Access (which has now become Paramount+) along with Netflix back in 2017. New Paramount+ customers in the UK can take up a free seven-day trial , you can also access Paramount+ via Sky Q or Sky Glass and it's "at no extra cost" for Sky Cinema customers, you can also watch via Prime Video .

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 trailer – When can I watch it?

Sadly, with no release date confirmed, there's no full trailer just yet. But when we do get a date, we'd expect the trailer in the month leading up to the premiere.

We have had a cool teaser trailer, though. It debuted at New York Comic Con 2022, and you can watch it above. It certainly makes the new season look very fun indeed. Beam us up!

Until we see more, live long, prosper, and check out our interview with Captain Burnham herself!

Why discovery is ending with season 5 & what it means for star trek.

Star Trek: Discovery ending with season 5 came as a surprise. Here's what we know about why the flagship Star Trek series is wrapping up.

Star Trek: Discovery ending with season 5 is a surprise move that will have a ripple effect on the Star Trek franchise on Paramount+. On March 2, 2023, the announcement came that Discovery 's upcoming fifth season will be its last , with heartfelt statements made by executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise, series lead and producer Sonequa Martin-Green, who portrays Captain Michael Burnham, Paramount chief programming officer Tanya Giles, and David Stapf of CBS Studios all praising the success of Discovery .

Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman are credited with creating Star Trek: Discovery , which has undergone behind-the-scenes changes and creative revamps since it launched on the CBS All-Access streaming service in 2017. Originally a prequel series set before Star Trek: The Original Series , Discovery jumped 930 years into the future of Star Trek's canonical timeline at the end of season 2. Discovery was not met with overwhelming love from hardcore Star Trek fandom since its inception, but it endured and found its creative footing. Discovery 's success became the cornerstone of Star Trek's expansion into an entire universe of new series streaming on Paramount+, which includes Star Trek: Picard , the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy , and its direct spinoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

Why Star Trek: Discovery Is Ending With Season 5

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season will stream on Paramount+ sometime in early 2024, but the reasons why the series is ending reportedly has to do more with the overall business of streaming and the landscape of the marketplace. A detailed analysis by TrekMovie examined the pressures Paramount Global is under to cut costs and make the Paramount+ streaming service profitable, which is an issue every streamer, including Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+, is dealing with. Paramount CFO Naveen Chopra announced that 2023 will be their "peak year" in streaming investment, which means the company is starting to trim its bottom line as Paramount+ merges with Showtime and becomes pickier about which series to finance. Star Trek: Discovery ending seems to be a result of the changing business of streaming.

Evidently, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 was not intended to be the end of the series. Variety and THR reported that "additional filming" will take place in 2023, presumably to add scenes and turn the season 5 finale into a proper series finale. No one at Paramount+ has used the word "canceled" to describe Discovery' s fate, but this is essentially what has happened. Still, Paramount intends to send Discovery out in style with media events in different markets throughout the year to celebrate the inaugural Star Trek series from CBS Studios and Secret Hideout, and build toward the yet-unannounced season 5 premiere date.

Discovery Ends As A Star Trek Success Story

Star Trek: Discovery has its share of loyal fans and detractors, but there is no arguing that there would be no Star Trek universe on Paramount+ without Michael Burnham's show leading the way. Discovery helped keep the nascent CBS All-Access streaming service afloat in its early years before its rebranding into Paramount+. The two live-action and two animated Star Trek shows that launched since 2020 were made possible by Discovery . Star Trek: Discovery was the franchise's first foray into serialized prestige television, and it raised the bar for Star Trek series in terms of cinematic visuals and production values.

Further, Star Trek: Discovery broke important ground for diversity, inclusiveness, and LGBTQ+ representation. Sonequa Martin-Green is the first Black female lead of a Star Trek series, and Burnham became the first Black female Captain to lead a Star Trek series. Anthony Rapp's Paul Stamets and Wilson Cruz's Dr. Hugh Culber were the first openly gay couple in a loving marriage portrayed in Star Trek. Discovery season 3 added Blu del Barrio's Adira Tal and Ian Alexander's Gray as Star Trek's first non-binary and transgender stars. This opened the door for further representation in the other Star Trek series, like Jesse James Keitel portraying the non-binary Captain Angel in Strange New Worlds .

What Happens To Star Trek After Discovery Ends?

Star Trek on Paramount+ had a historic 2022 where all five Star Trek series aired new episodes, resulting in a new episode of Star Trek nearly every Thursday throughout the year. Star Trek entered 2023 with much the same hoopla but Star Trek: Discovery season 5 both not premiering until 2024 and ending, along with Star Trek: Picard season 3 being its final season, casts a pall over the franchise. When Picard and Discovery end, Strange New Worlds , which will stream its completed season 2 episodes later this year, will be the lone live-action Star Trek series on Paramount+. This is unless the live-action Section 31 or Starfleet Academy series that Alex Kurtzman announced are in development happen.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 and Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 are currently in production to be released later in 2023, but it remains to be seen if either animated show will get another season order. Although, animation is cheaper to produce than live-action so it's a decent bet. There are also rumors Strange New Worlds season 3 will begin production later in 2023. Paramount+ placed Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Lower Decks ' Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) front and center in its Superbowl commercial, which is a good indication both Trek shows have an immediate future on the streamer. Five years is an eternity in today's streaming landscape so Star Trek: Discovery' s run can be considered a success by any measure, and its positive impact on Star Trek will continue to be felt into the future.

Star Trek: Discovery is coming to end.

The Paramount+ sci-fi drama will embark on its final voyage with its upcoming fifth season.

Sources say principal filming of the season is mostly complete. But with this move to end the show, there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series. The fifth and final season will premiere in early 2024.

“When we first started talking about the return of Star Trek eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact Star Trek: Discovery would have,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors Discovery honored Star Trek’s legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences.”

The move comes on the heels of Paramount+ announcing that another member of its Trek team, Star Trek: Picard , will wrap with its current third season.

Martin-Green wrote: “I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Discovery is ending. I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team. To our most supportive partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+, who insisted on making television history, I’m deeply grateful. I’m also deeply grateful for the creative collaboration with our showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman, as well as Olatunde Osunsanmi and the incomparable team of executive producers. I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of Trek with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans. The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek and an entire entertainment platform, and we’ll never forget it…65 episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery , to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let’s fly….”

The decision follows Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra telling an investor conference on Feb. 28 that the company might spend less on streaming content in 2024 than previously forecast due to the integration of  Paramount+  and Showtime.

The departure of Discovery secures its spinoff Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the undisputed new captain of Paramount+’s Star Trek series fleet. Strange New Worlds embraced the more planet-of-the-week style of The Original Series and launched last May to a 99 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Paramount+ said Strange New Worlds was the most-watched new Trek  series on the services over its first 90 days and the company touted the series in a Super Bowl ad last month. The show returns for Season 2 sometime this year.

Kurtzman has also teased the development of another potential spinoff, Star Trek: Academy , which would focus on a new generation of young cadets. Nothing has been officially announced yet on that front, however. Kurtzman is one of Paramount Global’s most important producers and has delivered hits outside of the Trek franchise for Paramount+ through his deal with CBS Studios. He inked his second nine-figure overall deal with the David Stapf-led CBS Studios in 2021.

Callum Keith Rennie also discusses coming into 'Discovery's final season, getting into prosthetics, and how much he has in common with Rayner.

The Big Picture

  • Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner brings conflict and depth to Star Trek: Discovery 's final season.
  • Rennie discusses his experience on Star Trek: Discovery , praising the supportive cast and crew, despite the initial challenges of joining an established series for its last season.
  • In Season 5, Episode 4 "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner must work together within a time bubble to save the universe.

As Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) embarks on one last adventure with her crew, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is bringing a few new characters along for the ride. Chief among those newcomers is the blunt, war-worn Captain Rayner. Played by Battlestar Galactica alum Callum Keith Rennie , Rayner is Burnham's new second in command on the Discovery , taking over after Saru ( Doug Jones ) took a different position at Starfleet.

Having lived through The Burn, Rayner doesn't have time for niceties and butts heads with Burnham almost immediately — so naturally, she takes it upon herself to give him a second chance when Starfleet is ready to cut him loose. Last week's episode saw him, rightfully, put in his place a bit as Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) attempted to help him connect with the crew, much to his chagrin. In Season 5 Episode 4, "Face the Strange," Rayner and Burnham are thrown into a time bubble, forcing them to work together if they ever want to get back to the correct timeline and prevent the universe from being destroyed.

Ahead of the episode, I sat down with Rennie to dig into Rayner's backstory, what we can expect from him in the rest of the season, and what it will take for Rayner to truly connect with the crew of Discovery . During our conversation, we also discussed Rennie's history with sci-fi, what it was like joining Discovery for the show's final season, and what he's taking away from the whole experience.

Star Trek: Discovery

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

Rennie is no stranger to science fiction, having had roles in such series as The Umbrella Academy , Jessica Jones, and Battlestar Galactica. As Battlestar Galactica was the series that turned me into a sci-fi fan, and perhaps Rennie's most recognizable role, I had to ask him about being a part of such massive and beloved franchises within the genre. "It's amazing," he said. For Rennie, even though Battlestar was also a reboot of a classic series , the show's success was a lot less predictable than the mainstay that is Star Trek . He explained, "Like, say Battlestar , when I started on that I had no idea where that one was gonna go. Discovery was already very established , but I actually didn't let any of that into my [head], because I went, “That's not gonna help.” So, I didn’t. Now, I'm feeling the world of it. Now, I'm sensing what the world of Discovery is and how many people love it, and how it fits. "

Discovery also isn't his first experience with Star Trek , "I watched the original. That was my thing, and that was it," Rennie told me. While he may have missed some of the series' in between, saying, "There's big chunks of time where I just didn't watch a lot of TV, so I missed all of the other stuff," he'll always make time for The Original Series when he comes across it, "even if the old Star Trek comes on, I'll still watch it because that was my Star Trek . Jim Kirk, and all of that. "

While we've gotten a pretty good sense of who Rayner is in these first four episodes, most of his backstory remains a mystery. Rennie revealed that "some backstory comes up in a few episodes." Part of his gruff exterior will be explained as we'll "get a sense of why he's maybe got a chip on his shoulder and has some unprocessed resentments about a bunch of things that maybe have played out in his work in a negative way."

Rennie Calls 'Star Trek: Discovery's Latest Episode "Amazing"

"Face the Strange," is such a classic Star Trek episode, employing the ever-entertaining sci-fi trope of sticking our main characters in a time loop, both to put an obstacle in their path as well as to bring them face to face with some of their own demons. For Rennie, the episode really put the science in science fiction. "It was like, 'Whoa! What's happening? I don't get it.' There's just so much science stuff and talk, so much jumping about to places and history and stuff." But he had high praise for his fellow castmates as well as the crew behind the camera." Lee [Rose] being the director, you're in great hands. Being in scenes with Sonequa, you know that you're gonna be in it , and it was great. I watched it again last night, and there’s just an amazing amount of stuff in there. It was just an amazing episode. "

In this episode, Burnham and Rayner are tossed back in time to the first season of Discovery , bringing them both face to face with the version of Burnham who's fresh off her own demotion in Starfleet . Throughout the episode, it becomes quite clear that Burnham and Rayner have a lot more in common than either of them might have realized. When asked if this experience might put them more on equal footing, Rennie confirmed that "he's learned an understanding of the crew." He went on to point out that we haven't seen the relationship that Rayner had with his own crew.

He explained: "We're not on the Antares talking about his crew, which I think is an important part that we missed, where you go, 'How did I see my people on my particular ship? And how well did I know them?' No one's asking me how well I knew everybody because I did, but if I've only been there a brief time, you're only gonna have facts." He admits that it is important for Rayner to connect past the surface level. "Through that particular episode, you learn and go, 'Yes, it is good to know what people are up to and where they're from,' because in that particular instance, it saved us. So, I learned a thing, and I give a, 'Yes. Got it. Thank you.'"

Rayner Will Have to Shorten the Distance Between Himself and the Discovery Crew

While it doesn't sound like we'll be getting any flashbacks to Rayner's time on the Antares Rennie believes that he'd spent a similar amount of time with that crew as Michael has with hers. "We didn't get to inhabit that, I get to make it up in my own mind," he said. "But for me, it was more like a pirate ship that I had. " While Rayner comes off as the more stubborn, stick-to-the-mission Captain between him and Burnham, Rennie doesn't think he was quite so strict on his own ship. He said:

"That's the way I perceived it. It wasn't some rigid, completely stoic, boss fest, but a little bit of a wild card ship. We're gonna go into things that nobody else wants to go into, or knows how to deal with, but we would. "

While the walls around Rayner are still pretty high, Rennie explained that we will see him "shorten the distance" he's put between himself and the crew of the Discovery. "There's a great bit, there's an episode where Burnham leaves me again to take control of the ship. There's an interaction with everybody in a certain way because they don't like me yet. [Laughs] And I need some help a little bit, but I've created a distance, and I have to shorten that distance between everybody." He went on to say there are plenty of "fun dynamics" to look forward to and Rayner's insistence on keeping everyone at arm's length will likely come back to bite him.

Star Trek has quite a long list of original alien species created for the franchise, and Rayner just happens to be a Kellerun, a race that hasn't been seen since Deep Space Nine . In classic Trek fashion, Kelleruns appear mostly human with the most visible difference being the shape of the ears. As he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Leonard Nimoy and any actor who has ever played a Vulcan or a Romulan, I asked Rennie about getting into prosthetics for the role. "Those guys are great. Rocky [Faulkner] was great, Nicola [Bendrey] was great." While it was certainly an extra step the process was brief enough that it didn't bother him to come to set a bit earlier than usual. "That was probably an hour, and I really didn't think about that enough to go, 'Oh, that's right. I have to get up earlier.' But I think we got it down to an hour and a bit for just the ears because there’s a lot of stuff on them."

Despite the agonizing wait of sitting in front of a mirror for an hour, Rennie noted that Faulkner and Bendrey made the make-up experience as fun as it could possibly have been. He said: "I don't love just sitting there looking at myself for an hour, but there's music and great company and coffee, and it became a really sweet part of the day, and then another sweet part of the day where I download. " It wasn't his first time getting into prosthetics, but his previous experience had been brief. After playing Rayner across an entire season, Rennie admitted by the end, removing the glue actually started to feel like you'd expect pulling costume glue off your ears to feel. "There was a point near the end where the glue-on, glue-off became quite painful for a while."

The Support of the Cast and the Fans Are Highlights of Rennie's 'Star Trek' Experience

While this is Rennie's first season on the show, it's the final bow for Star Trek: Discovery . When asked what he'd be taking away from this experience, he had nothing but high praise for the cast and crew. As a newcomer on a well-established show, jumping into the fifth season had a bit of a learning curve. "I found that coming into the show was difficult for me because it was unlike a show that I'd been on before. It was already very well established." He went on to say:

"I pat myself on the back because I made it through, and there was this wonderful group energy that helped me do that. The good naturedness of the show was something that I maybe haven't worked on. There was a wholehearted goodness about it, which was quite nice, which overlapped into how people treated each other and mutual respect. Also, I kind of blocked out all Star Treks in my mind, so I'm there not thinking of Star Trek history. I'm just doing scene-to-scene and working on this stuff, and then it finishes, and then I forget that there's an incredible vast following of the show that somehow you are now part of it like that. All of that, this is all relatively new to me."

As a new addition to an already established group, I pointed out that it seemed as though Rennie's experience mirrored that of his characters, and he agreed. "I'm excited for people to see the season. And then, coming into it playing, “I don't want to be liked. It doesn't matter if I'm liked. I'm there to do my job, like Rayner, and I'm doing it. And then there's the after-effect of an incredible fan base that seems to be very supportive ."

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5 Review: One Hell of a Final Ride

discovery star trek new season

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 4 uses time travel to remember the past 5 seasons

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 4

With the news that "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is ending after its current season, that really only leaves "Strange New Worlds" as the last remaining Nu-Trek series currently airing on television.

And, a word to the wise: If you're a die-hard fan of " Discovery ," make sure you have your own physical media, 'cause no one likes being at the mercy of whatever an overpaid television executive thinks. You're welcome. Moreover, after this final season of "Discovery," we're going to have until wait until next year for the next season of " Strange New Worlds ." It's all starting to feel a bit like "Game of Thrones" all over again.

Episode four, entitled "Face the Strange," is without a doubt the best entry so far in the fifth season, and one can't help but wonder after watching exactly when the cast and production crew were first informed that this would be the last season, because it was definitely before this episode was actually written. The reason? It is, for all intents and purposes, a 60-minute, time-travel-powered, postscript-style reminiscence of all elements of all five seasons — or as much as you can cram into an hour — and what a rollercoaster ride it's been.

So when Alex Kurtzman or Michelle Paradise or whoever it is that actually has authority in the writer's room entered said room, put down their grande iced sugar-free vanilla half-double decaffeinated half-caff latte with soy milk and a twist of lemon in their Paramount-branded 40oz Stanley Clean Slate Quencher H2.0 Flowstate™ Tumbler and announced, "Wouldn't it be great to revisit chapters from seasons one, two, three and four?" no doubt everyone cheered. "And how will this be possible?" asked Kurtzman, to which an eager-beaver intern no doubt excitedly thrust their hand up into the air and exclaimed, "Why, time travel , of course!"

"Quite right," replied Kurtzman (in our imaginations, at least), adding, "But it can be for one episode, so it has to be an isolated, self-contained form of time travel." Thus was conceived the "Time Bug," and with it came a ton of technobabble to precisely explain its parameters. Although quite why Zora didn't detect it was not addressed. Also, you know, transporters.

But this clever Time Bug, which can manipulate time in just about any way that's convenient for the writers to overcome any potential chronological complications — like life-changing paradoxes — came onboard the USS Discovery by way of that shifty Malinne "Moll" Ravel (Eve Harlow), who managed to infiltrate the Trill homeworld undetected, as we saw last week .

As a result, we get reminder glimpses of Michael Burnham's first coming aboard the USS Discovery way, way, way back in season one, complete with appropriate uniforms and everything. We get a fleeting reminder of the Red Angel and the battle with Control , naturally The Burn gets a mention, and there's even a not-very-subtle nod to the short-Trek " Calypso ." It's all a little bit like a Greatest Hits album that doesn't include any of the tracks that you actually liked, being played at 45 instead of 33. Remember vinyl?

Since it's now obvious that this season was written after the cancellation announcement had been made to the cast and crew, the single most important question is, Will the show benefit from that, or will it suffer? Are the remaining six episodes going to be a drawn-out epilogue, tied loosely together with a mostly lame plot? Or, will advance knowledge of the show's future actually serve the writers well, allowing them to produce something above and beyond the normal level of writing?

There's even a very entertaining scene, in which 23rd-century Burnham must fight her 32nd-century self. Of course, the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator fitted to the space bug prevents any changes from affecting the timeline, so you know, phew .

Most of the original Discovery bridge reappear, as close to how they looked seven years ago as possible, and even Lt. Cmdr. Airiam (played by Sara Mitich in the first season and Hannah Cheesman in the second) makes a cameo, so that's nice. Also, we can really see as Sonequa Martin-Green flips between her two Burnhams just how effective that dreadlock hair piece that she wears through this season actually is. Half the show's budget probably went to that.

It's a fun filler episode, and, even if it doesn't advance the plot an inch, it does allow character development to take place, particularly between Burnham and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). Arguably the biggest surprise was that the writers were able to resist putting Captain Pike (Anson Mount) into this episode.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," and every other episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the U.S., while "Prodigy" has found a new home on Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the U.K. and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

Watch: Things Get “Odd” In ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Trailer And Clip From “Face The Strange”

About those red uniforms traveling into the past…

To the extent they did exist in Century 23, they meant something completely different than “command.”

Great podcast as usual Laurie and Tony.

One week on, and I’m still crushed by Lower Decks’ cancellation. And it was a cancellation, no matter how Paramount words it – the decision was made by executives, against the wishes of Mike McMahan, the cast and crew, who have all said and continue to say they have more stories to tell.

I’ve been a Trek fan for a long time, but for many years watching Trek felt more like a duty than something I enjoyed. Discover and Picard S1 weren’t clicking with me…then came Lower Decks.

I didn’t know what to make of it at first…now, I can say it’s the show that reignited my fandom, made me love Star Trek again.

To be clear, I do not begrudge anyone who loves Discovery or Picard…if they’re your favorite Trek shows, that’s great! It’s a big tent…or it should be. (I will add I really liked “Face the Strange”).

I only hope that Season 5 will serve as a satisfying conclusion. The way Mike has been talking since last October, I got the sense that he felt Season 5 would be it, much as he didn’t want it to be. Hopefully he and the writers room crafted the season with that in mind.

Yeah, every time I think about LDS ending I get sad again. Such a shame. Paramount must be really hard up for cash if they are ok with dropping down to only 1 Trek show on the air until Academy gets up and running.

The mention on today’s podcast of a possible streaming movie perked me up a little: seems like it would be perfect for the idea of the occasional streaming Trek movie. Of course, I would still prefer that the show get picked up by Netflix – “the home of animated Star Trek” ? – but anything is better than nothing.

If nothing else, maybe once the Paramount ship is righted after the sale/reorg, they could bring the show back. It’s not as if the actors are going to age too much in the meantime to do some more voice work in a few years. :)

Making my way through the podcast. RE: The model, I’m guessing it’s probably closer to sixty years old, as it was used to film The Cage. It was likely lost about 47 years ago. Picking a nit, I’m sorry…. :-)

Thanks again for a fun podcast! I had a thought about the exchange on “The View.” IF this wasn’t just some joke gone awry, it seems to me that a likely scenario is that Guinan might appear in the ST: S31 movie. Georgiou has probably gone back to an era when Guinan is still alive, raising the interesting prospect of her getting some psychological help from her as part of a redemptive arc. Seeing Whoopie Goldberg and Michelle Yeoh interacting would be something to look forward to!!!

Great episode, as always, guys! We truly look forward to following our first viewing with your thoughts and reactions.

I just want to pop in to say that Reno calls Stamets “Dr. Truffles” because truffles are fungi. They are the apparently tasty (I certainly can’t afford truffles to find out!) and hard to come by fungi that grow underground and get hunted by trained pigs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truffle

Yes! I figured that out yesterday, randomly. I knew truffles were fungi, but the first thing my brain goes to when I hear the word is chocolate. D’oh.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”
