THE DISTILLERY

Blair Athol Distillery stands at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands in the picturesque town of Pitlochry, Perthshire. Set in open moorland south of the town, in the foothills of the Grampian mountains, Blair Athol’s ancient source of water – the Allt Dour – flows through the grounds from the slopes of Ben Vrackie, contributing to the whisky’s, mellow quality and smooth finish.

Advanced booking for tours and experiences is highly recommended to avoid disappointment. Please note that the distillery is in its 'silent season' from 11th March until 6th May inclusive. During this time we've adapted our tours and experiences as our production area isn't accessible to the public. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

If you plan on visiting us with your dog, please view our full policy here .

Guided Whisky Tours in Scotland by Mclean Scotland

Mclean Scotland Whisky Tours

Whisky distilleries in perthshire.

Growing all the time, with old established and fairly new distilleries to visit.

Tullibardine

One of our favourite places for a dram. Great staff here, nice big shop and lounge, good tours but we mostly arrange private special tastings, the whole range and maybe a special or two! We normally do this at the end on the way back to Edinburgh/Glasgow/airport, they have never let us down, plus – guests normally fall asleep en route, as the 7 or so drams take their toll!

Lindores Abbey

The earliest Aqua Vitae was made at Lindores as long ago as 1494, Lindores Abbey Distillery is situated next to the small town of Newburgh. Just 20 minutes-drive from Perth, 1 hour from Edinburgh, the Legacy Bar offers a selection of Scottish cheese and meat platters to accompany your drams and cocktails.  I have to say I’ve been many times with different people, each time I think it good, very well done and clean and tidy, good food available. But I do think it is more of a tourist site than a good distillery tour. Their new releases are for me, too young. Oh well, that’s just me, try for yourself.

The new restaurant is a 5-star thing of beauty, new owners - Lalique Crystal, the Swiss company, everywhere it shows, from the restaurant, to the Glen Turret bottles. The actual tour is ok, no a large place and you get the whole gist of making whisky, but we think it is more of a foodie destination with a very expensive shop.

It used to be called Dewars World of whisky. Another local distillery to Paul, “I really like this one, superb staff, Rhona, Big Ross and familiar faces. There’s an interesting museum on the tour. The extra-long tours are excellent. Lovely setting and very scenic, we have taken many guests over the years”. You may be pleasantly surprised by the Aberfeldy blend and the single cask releases. In our opinion, the drams are getting better all the time! Good shop food and bar!

We like this one, no computers, nice friendly staff, good tour.  It’s in a lovely location, once a cotton mill. It’s near Doune Castle, where Monty Python’s Holy Grail and Outlander were filmed, so you would expect lots of tourists. Not really, I would say it’s a hidden gem. Nice cafe too (try the toasties). We recommend a more in-depth tour with some good drams to match, a nice tasting room, or for the more wealthy of you, an even better room upstairs! Try and get a tour when Rabbies are NOT there.

Don’t shout, it’s in Fife, but close to Perthshire. Housed in restored stone farm buildings and has been traditionally designed by Frances. The distillery uses home grown barley of the highest quality, nothing is wasted in the process as spent grains. “Draff” is fed to cattle on the farm, effluent produced is used as a fertiliser and hot water is pumped into the farm’s duck pond, which ensures that the surface does not freeze over during the winter. I love this place, its wee and Francis does a superb tour. Bottles have been released, do try and get hold of one, or two, drink one keep one! The name relates to the farm stream/burn which seems to run uphill – daft! Frances is one of the most laid back people I know, he works at the distillery when he feels like, but not to interfere with the farm he and his brother run. It will never be a large output, that’s just what he wants.

Blair Atholl

One of Diageo’s distilleries, also known as Bells. Located in the lovely Victorian town of Pitlochry, easy to find and park. It’s a decent tour but we always try for the special tours, as we have more dedicated whisky lovers here than tourists. It has a bar area with many drams available, try this out even if you do not do the tour, actually we tend not to do the tour, just drink in the bar. As you would expect, it has all the Diageo drams across Scotland on offer. We are working our way through the alphabet! The Blair Atholl single malt is good.  The mash tun which was used to create the bar was originally from Diageo’s Clynelish Distillery in Brora on the northeast coast of Scotland, I know some of you here will cringe, but do try a whisky cocktail!

Yes, yes we know it is in Fife, but we dinnae have a section for Fife. Near St Andrews. They started life as a craft brewery, now produce some fantastic gins (Love, Oak) before their amber nectar was ready to taste in 2018.  A quirky place with the most passionate people on the planet. But is it a brewery, a gin palace or a distillery?  Don’t think they know. One thing we do know, staff come and go very often. A new distillery here soon.

It is a very scenic distillery up in the hills above Pitlochry, lots of different whiskies in the bar at 50% off pub prices.  The staff are good.  Andrew has built a twin distillery up the hill, new warehouse, his own bottling plant, it’s a good one to see. Just after lockdown Andrew’s dream came true – he never reopened!

Our popular whisky tour, that takes you to some of the most historic and traditional Scottish whisky distilleries.

Let us take you in style and comfort in a luxurious Discovery 5 with your own kilted Highlander to visit unique distilleries in Highland Perthshire while you enjoy the subtleties of the malts and blends without the worry of driving.

We can recommend great places for lunch too, to ensure you have a great day out with family or friends.

Highland Perthshire has a number of whisky distilleries spread about the County.

On this tour we will take in two of them.

They are all situated amongst stunning scenery and the whiskies all have unique flavours.

We can gear the tour to suit your needs and wishes.

This tour will begin with a trip to the Glenturret Distillery near Crieff.

You will see exactly what is involved in the whisky making process.

Glenturret is reputedly the oldest distillery in Scotland – well legal one anyway – producing whisky since 1775.

It sits almost hidden in the depths of Glenturret, where it uses the pure waters of the Turret burn to produce the amber nectar.

The tasting tour takes about an hour and involves a couple of drams and the opportunity to purchase their wares in the distillery shop.

From here we will head through the beautiful Sma’ Glen on route to the next distillery – Aberfeldy.

Highland Perthshire Whisky Tour

It sits on the banks of the River Tay and is the home to one of the world’s favourite whiskies – Dewar’s.

John Dewar was born just three miles from here and started the distillery in 1898. It has been the base of the blend of Dewar’s whisky ever since. It also produces a number of fine malt whiskies in its own right.

Aberfeldy Distillery

We will then follow the River Tay for a while before heading south towards the beautiful village of Dunkeld. Here there is the chance to pop in to The Whisky Box, a independent whisky shop that has lots of unique whiskies to try and buy.

After a stroll around the village it will be time to head to The Hermitage for a woodland walk. This beautiful forest was designed and planted in the 1800s by the Duke of Atholl.

The Hermitage Viewpoint

It will then be time to drive the hour’s journey back down the road to Edinburgh.

Perthshire Gin Distilleries

Perthshire compromises the central part of Scotland and marks the boundary between Scotland’s Lowland and Highland regions. In addition to a wide variety of excellent attractions you can explore within the area, there are a lot of excellent Perthshire gin distilleries you can indulge in.

Perthshire is home to several excellent botanicals that make the gin in the region incredibly delicious – here are the distilleries to look out for on your next visit to Scotland.

In This Post

Badvo’s Distillery

Badvo’s Distillery is self-titled as Pitlochry’s Gin, and we agree. Each gin created from Badvo’s Distillery is made with botanicals that are hand foraged and then distilled in traditional copper stills – which you can see when you visit!

Each bottle of Badvo Gin uses Badvo spring water, adding a zingy finish to its smooth and crisp taste. This exquisite taste is thanks to sun-ripened juniper, the main botanical to create this divine spirit. Badvo’s is one of the smallest distilleries we will mention on this list, so take advantage of your opportunity to help this budding gin distillery grow.

The Gin Bothy

Just northeast of Perth sits the Gin Bothy, one of the best free-to-visit experiences near central attractions like Glamis Castle.

The Gin Bothy’s pride and joy gin is the Gunshot Gin, named because of its distinct gold medal colour and the warm inner glow after drinking it. The gin’s flavour comes from the unique combination of cinnamon, cloves, and a touch of honey to give the drink a delicious and full aftertaste.

Experience the gin process at the Gin Bothy, and then wind the afternoon down with a delicious snack and sip of their exquisite gin.

Speyside Distillery

The Speyside Distillery has honed the art of distilling gin in one of the most beautiful attractions in Scotland, the Cairngorms National Park . The verdant Cairngorms is home to several delicious botanicals, each lovingly used in this small, hand-built, artisanal distillery.

The Distillery was a barley mill in the 1700s but fell into disuse in 1965. It was reopened in 1990 and has been producing delicious gins. Their secret is carefully chosen botanicals, like limes, lemon balm, sweet cicely, blood oranges, and potentially even a hint of rosemary. You’ll taste the sharp citrus cut through the drink.

The Speyside Distillery is a small distillery with a lot of charm – if you’re in the Cairngorms looking for gins with a quality finish, then this one is an excellent choice.

Gin Laboratory

The Gin Laboratory is a unique name for a gin distillery, and they provide a similarly unique experience for visitors visiting Kinross. While many distilleries want to keep a portion of their distilling process a secret, the Gin Laboratory takes a very open and scientific approach to making their gin.

One of the premier experiences you can partake in at the Gin Laboratory is the Gin Blending Experience. Create up to three flavourful gins with up to 40 different flavours, including citrus, floral, herbal, or fruity splash. You can even take 250ml of your own handcrafted brew home with you!

The Gin Laboratory’s open approach to their bottled spirits and the freedom to brew your gin makes it one gin distillery in Perthshire you can’t miss.

Persie Distillery

Found at the foot of the Glenshee, the Persie Distillery a master at making hand-crafted gin. You might’ve already seen their iconic cloudy bottles in stores around Scotland, but nothing beats tasting them in the distillery with an informative guide.

The minds behind the world’s first touring gin club, Gin Club Scotland, created this gin brand. That wealth of experience has been used to create each bottle distilled within Persie, making the flavour of this distillery’s gin unlike any other.

If you’re a gin connoisseur, we recommend trying their Zesty Citrus gin, Herby & Aromatic, and the Sweet & Nutty Old Tom – consistently their most popular gins during tastings. The Persie Distillery tour is highly rated by travellers and features a sampling of their best gin and vodka.

Only indulge a little, though, as afterwards, you’ll be taken on a distillery tour that covers everything the distillery does to make their delicious gin. Tours require booking ahead of time and are about £20 per head. The Persie Distillery is 10 minutes from Blairgowrie , which means there’s no reason not to stop by!

Strathearn Distillery

The rural region of Perthshire is rich with gorgeous views and places to appreciate, and Strathearn Distillery ranks as one of the best if you love gin. This distillery is only a few miles from Scone Palace, making it an excellent location to wind down with a crisp gin.

Strathearn is a small distillery, and their gins are a small batch supply that you can’t find in many places besides this humble Perthshire distillery. Stop by and sample their Heather Rose or Scottish gin when you’re in the area – we bet you won’t be disappointed.

The Perth Distillery Co

One of the most prominent gin distillers in Perthshire is The Perth Distillery Co, which you can find in the heart of Perth. Whether you’re a fan of floral Perth pink gin or crisp and botanical Scottish gin, the Perth Distillery Co is set on giving you a gin-tasting experience unlike any you’ve had before.

This distillery’s small-batch gin is lovingly made with 15 distinctive botanicals that create a combination that is both smooth and flavourful. Feel aromatic star anise, fennel, ginger, and a citrus burst of lemon and lime dance along your palate with each sip.

If you find yourself in the Fair City overlooking the River Tay when exploring Perthshire distilleries, The Perth Distillery Co provides a benchmark that’s difficult to beat for handcrafted Perth Gin. Original or Pink, the choice is yours.

Whisky tasting

Three distilleries highland whisky tour, tour highlights, this memorable whisky tour visits three distilleries set amidst the beautiful scenery of highland perthshire. suitable for connoisseur and novice alike you will see how the ‘water of life’ is made, matured and taste for yourself why scotch is enjoyed across the globe. most importantly you will have plenty of time to sample scotland’s spirit at all three distilleries..

  • Three malt whisky distilleries
  • Highland village of Pitlochry
  • Lochs and mountains of Highland Perthshire
  • Forth Rail Bridge

1 Day Whisky Tasting

Our first stop is Edradour, the smallest distillery in Scotland. Its picturesque setting in a valley (or glen) above the village of Pitlochry is an ideal place to sample the delicious single malt whisky, still made by just three men. This charming wee distillery only produces 12 casks of whisky per week and during the tour you will experience the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional whisky distillery, largely unchanged since Victorian times.

Edradour Distillery Scaled Aspect Ratio X

The whisky itself has a depth of flavour and quality which is a fine blend of altitude and mountain water. With a smooth, creamy texture and a hint of smokiness, Edradour is a mouth-watering way to start the day.

Highland Perthshire

Enjoy lunch in the popular Victorian village of Pitlochry. For a small highland town there is an excellent range of restaurants, cafes and eateries with several overlooking the town’s famous salmon ladder and hydro dam.

Following the silvery River Tay we soon arrive at Aberfeldy Distillery and Dewar’s World of Whisky; a fascinating historical perspective on one family’s vision and determination to promote and sell whisky around the world.

Their mission was clearly a resounding success given Dewar’s White Label is still the biggest selling brand in the United States! Here you will have the opportunity to tour the Dewar’s Museum, blend your own virtual whisky and sample a dram of an Aberfeldy single malt or one of their world-famous blends.

Glenturret Distillery

A 30 minute scenic drive through the Sma’ Glen brings us to the Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret (Scotland’s oldest distillery). Your day ends with a step-by-step guided tour of the distillery where you will learn how whisky is produced from barley to bottle. As well as walking you through the production process this is a unique interactive tour (which includes a BAFTA award-winning ‘birds eye’ film of bonnie Scotland!). Afterwards sample Scotland’s favourite whisky and their malt at the nosing bar.

Our drive south takes us past Gleneagles Golf Resort and across the Forth Road Bridge with stunning views of the famous Forth Rail Bridge. Opened in 1890 it is 2.5 kms long and was one of the major engineering achievements of the Victorian age. The bridge took seven years to build, and more than fifty men were killed during its construction. The contractors used 55,000 tons of steel and eight million rivets to complete one of Scotland’s most impressive landmarks.
