[Quick Fixes] Dodge Journey Transmission Problems

Last Updated on November 23, 2023 by Robert Wilson

Dodge Journey transmission problems have been a common issue for owners since the model was first introduced.

Many have complained of issues with the six-speed automatic transmission, including hard shifting, delayed engagement, and complete failure.

While Dodge has issued a few recalls over the years to try and address the problem, it seems to be a persistent one that continues to plague owners.

If you own a 2011 Dodge Journey, you may be having problems with the transmission. In fact, there have been so many complaints about this issue that Dodge has issued a recall.

Dodge Journey Common Problems & Solutions

One of the most common problems with the Dodge Journey is that the engine may stall without warning.

This can be a serious safety issue as it can cause the vehicle to lose power while driving, increasing the risk of an accident.

Top Dodge Journey Issues!

  • The Remote Keyless Entry System May Not Work intermittently.
  • Dampness Inside the Vehicle Due to a Water Leak.
  • The Engine may Overheat Due to Debris in the Cylinder Head Coolant Port.
  • Vibration on Brake Application.
  • Whine Type Noise From the Power Steering Pump.

What are the Signs Your Transmission is Going Out?

There are many different signs that your transmission may be going out. If you notice any of the following, it’s important to have your vehicle checked by a mechanic as soon as possible:

1. Transmission Fluid Leaks : One of the most common signs of transmission trouble is a fluid leak. Transmission fluid keeps your car’s gears lubricated and cool, so if it starts leaking, it can mean big problems for your transmission. Check for red or brown fluid leaks underneath your car; if you see any, it’s time to take it in for service. 2. Burning Smell: Another sign that indicates something is wrong with your transmission is a burning smell coming from the engine area. This could indicate that the transmission fluid is overheating and beginning to break down. Once this happens, it can cause serious damage to the gears and other components inside the transmission.

3. Grinding or Shaking: When in Neutral If you notice that your car shakes or grinds when you shift into neutral, this could be a sign that the gears are worn out or damaged. This problem will only get worse over time, so it’s important to have it checked out sooner rather than later.

4. Slipping Gears: When shifting gears, do you notice that the car seems to slip out of gear or hesitates before shifting!

How Much is a Transmission for a Dodge Journey?

A transmission for a Dodge Journey typically costs between $1,500 and $4,000. The cost will depend on the year, make and model. If you only need a transmission fluid flush or filter change, it will be on the lower end.

Dodge Journey Transmission Recall

Dodge is recalling certain model year vehicles manufactured from April 2010 through May 2018.

The affected vehicles may have a transmission oil cooler line that may rub against the engine block, resulting in a leak of transmission fluid. A loss of transmission fluid can result in a stall without warning and increase the risk of a crash.

Dodge Journey Not Shifting Gears: Causes and Fixes

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

The Dodge Journey is a great vehicle that can last many miles with no issue. However, like any vehicle, it can face issues and malfunctions from time to time.

One such problem that can occur in the Journey is the tendency to not shift gears properly. When this happens, the first thing you should do is check the transmission fluid.

Dodge Journey Not Shifting

There could be various reasons for the Dodge Journey’s gear shifting issues, such as misaligned throttle position sensors, malfunctioning shift solenoids, or even general wear and tear related to higher mileage.

Understanding the symptoms and causes of these shifting problems is crucial for Journey owners, as it helps them to diagnose the issue and seek the appropriate repair solutions.

Key Takeaways

  • Checking the transmission fluid is the first step you should take in diagnosing a Dodge Journey that won’t shift.
  • Misaligned throttle position sensors and malfunctioning shift solenoids are possible causes.
  • Diagnosing the issue and seeking proper repair can help ensure smooth operation.
  • This issue usually requires a professional diagnosis.

Common Causes of Gear Shifting Problems

Transmission fluid issues.

Dodge Journey won't shift gears

One common cause of gear shifting problems in a Dodge Journey is issues with the transmission fluid. Transmission fluid plays a crucial role in the operation of the transmission, allowing gears to shift smoothly and providing proper lubrication to prevent wear.

Low or contaminated fluid can lead to poor shifting performance, hesitation, and even damage to the transmission. It is essential to regularly check the fluid levels and replace it as necessary to maintain optimal performance.

Faulty Transmission Solenoids

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Faulty transmission solenoids are another possible cause of gear shifting issues in Dodge Journeys.

Transmission solenoids are responsible for controlling the flow of transmission fluid throughout the transmission system. When these solenoids aren’t functioning correctly, they can cause the transmission to not shift properly or at all. Replacing the faulty solenoids may resolve the problem.

Malfunctioning Transmission Control Module

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

The transmission control module (TCM) is responsible for managing the transmission’s operation, including shifting gears.

A malfunctioning TCM can cause several issues, such as not shifting correctly or not shifting at all. If the TCM is not functioning as it should, it may need to be replaced or reprogrammed.

Shift Linkage or Cable Problems

Finally, issues with the shift linkage or cables can also cause gear shifting problems in a Dodge Journey. These components connect the gear shift lever to the transmission, allowing the driver to change gears manually.

Damage or wear to the linkage or cables can lead to difficulty shifting or even the inability to shift gears altogether. Inspecting and replacing the damaged parts of the shift linkage or cables may help to resolve gear shifting issues.

Symptoms of Dodge Journey Shifting Issues

Delayed gear engagement.

Delayed gear engagement is a common symptom of transmission problems in Dodge Journeys. It refers to a hesitation or delay when shifting gears or a reluctance to shift into certain gears.

This could be caused by various issues within the transmission, such as high temperatures or worn-out gears. You may notice that your vehicle takes longer than usual to shift from one gear to another, or that the engine revs higher than normal before the transmission finally shifts.

Shifting Without Warning

Another symptom of shifting issues in a Dodge Journey is unexpected shifts occurring without any warning.

This can happen when the transmission quickly and suddenly shifts into a different gear, causing the driver to lose control or feel a jolt. This could be due to problems with the shift solenoids, the throttle position sensor, or other internal transmission components.

Difficulty Changing Gears

Dodge Journey owners may also experience difficulty when attempting to change gears. This can manifest as a resistance or struggle to move the gear shifter, or even difficulty selecting the desired gear altogether.

Such issues can result from internal transmission damage, low transmission fluid, or an improperly adjusted throttle position sensor. Drivers with this symptom should seek a thorough diagnosis from a qualified mechanic to pinpoint the underlying cause and correct it.

Strange Noises When Shifting

Finally, strange noises accompanying gear shifts could be indicative of transmission problems in a Dodge Journey.

You may hear grinding, humming, or whining sounds during shifts or when the transmission is attempting to engage a gear. These unusual noises could potentially indicate worn-out gears, damaged bearings, or other internal transmission components requiring repair or replacement.

Having a professional mechanic assess the situation is essential for determining the cause and the smart move.

Diagnosing Transmission Problems

Dodge Journey not shifting diagnosis

When a Dodge Journey encounters issues with shifting gears, it is essential to diagnose the problem accurately. To do so, consider using the following methods:

Visual Inspection

The first step in diagnosing transmission problems is a thorough visual inspection. Check the transmission fluid level and its condition, as low or contaminated fluid can cause hard shifts or slipping.

Inspect the wiring and connections to the transmission for signs of wear or damage, as corroded or loose connections can impair signal transmission.

Be sure to inspect the transmission linkage and bushings for wear, as worn or damaged components can cause the Journey to struggle during gear changes.

Additionally, examine the throttle position sensor to ensure that it is functioning correctly and providing accurate data to the transmission control module (TCM).

Trouble Code Analysis

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

The next step is to analyze any trouble codes stored in the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system. These codes can provide valuable insight into potential issues with the transmission.

Common codes related to transmission problems include those related to shift solenoids, transmission control modules, and throttle position sensors.

To read the codes, use an OBD-II scanner to connect to the vehicle’s diagnostic port. Once the scanner has retrieved the relevant error codes, consult a repair manual or online resources specific to the Dodge Journey to interpret the codes and determine the appropriate course of action.

Specialized Diagnostic Tools

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Some transmission problems may require specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the issue. One such tool is a pressure gauge designed to monitor transmission fluid pressure.

If the pressure is abnormal or erratic, it could indicate a problem with the transmission’s hydraulic system, such as a faulty valve body or internal seal.

Another valuable tool is a multimeter, which can be used to check the electrical components of the transmission system, including solenoids and sensors. With a multimeter, you can measure resistance, voltage, and current to ensure the components are functioning correctly and within the specified range.

Using a combination of visual inspection, trouble code analysis, and specialized diagnostic tools, you can accurately diagnose transmission problems in a Dodge Journey and apply the necessary fixes to get it back on the road.

Solutions and Repair Procedures

Fluid level and quality check.

A crucial first step in addressing Dodge Journey shifting issues is to check the fluid level and quality. This involves assessing the transmission fluid for an appropriate color, adequate level, and absence of debris.

Low or contaminated fluid can lead to erratic shifting and poor transmission performance. If the fluid appears dark or burnt, it is recommended to flush the system and replace it with fresh fluid.

Solenoid and Control Module Replacement

For automatic transmissions, solenoid issues or malfunctioning control modules can lead to shifting problems. One possible solution is to replace the faulty shift solenoid or the automatic transmission control module (TCM, PCM).

These components are responsible for informing the transmission when to shift gears, and their failure can directly affect gear-shifting performance. It’s important to diagnose and replace these parts if they are found to be faulty.

Adjusting or Fixing Linkage and Cables

In some cases, the linkage and cables responsible for transmitting the gearshift input may become improperly adjusted or damaged.

In these situations, it is essential to inspect the connections and adjust, repair, or replace any faulty or misaligned components. Properly aligning the linkage and cables can resolve problems with gear shifting and improve the overall transmission performance.

Maintenance Tips to Prevent Shifting Issues

Regular maintenance can help prevent shifting issues in a Dodge Journey. Following a few simple steps will ensure the vehicle’s transmission and gears function smoothly.

Check the Transmission Fluid Regurarly

First, it is essential to check and maintain the transmission fluid levels. Low or dirty transmission fluid can cause gears to shift improperly.

It is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for the correct transmission fluid type and intervals for replacement. In most cases, this would involve checking the fluid level every 30,000 miles and changing it every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

See your Dodge owner’s manual for the exact maintenance schedule.

Pay Attention to Changes

Another critical factor in preventing gear shifting issues is to pay attention to the vehicle’s performance. If your Journey is displaying signs of gear hunting, stalling, or jerking while shifting, these might be early indications of a problem.

Tire Size and Alignment

In addition, proper tire balancing and alignment play a role in transmission performance. Larger or improperly balanced tires can cause stress on the transmission, leading to gear shifting issues.

It is crucial to keep the tires balanced, aligned, and inflated per manufacturer specifications to maintain optimal transmission functionality.

Some Journey owners have experienced satisfactory results by adjusting the shifting points of the vehicle. This can be done with the help of a professional tuner who can reprogram the vehicle’s computer to shift gears at different RPMs. This may improve overall ride quality and put less stress on the vehicle.

Hi all,1st post.I've had this journey for 2 years and this awd seems to only work when it feels like it.It was purchased as a leftover with 118 miles. 2015 SXT awd hot v6 5 passenger 19" rim option.I price shopped (22,600 delivered to me) and the dealer is nothing to write home about so i have just lived with annoyances.Right front end clunk and rattle worse when cold.Brake rotors i had turned at 300 miles cuz they were all rust, and this mystery awd.To be fair there is was no manual with the car(or floor mates) and I'm not downloading 500 pages of a pdf telling me how to sync a phone to the radio that i don't have, so maybe I'm not turning it on?,dunno.I would like to get on the technical side of this and understand what sensors and locations actually make it work.

We are in general happy with the car, plenty of zip, silky smooth for a 6,doesn't use a drop of oil,and with my bad back  i find the seating and entry/ exit excellent. The bad kumho tires mystery cupping in the center, and NO HEAT in the back of the vehicle, which is nuts since even my beater 97 neon has a heat duct running thru the center console, someone please slap the engineer who came up with that one.

My ride had the front end clunk - both sides - and it got bad enough that it would wander all over the road on scarified surfaces.  They took three shots, but the last was the one that fixed it. The solution was apparently to tighten p links on both sides - not sure what the heck a 'link' is that is adjustable - I sprung for a wheel alignment after the fact. If your dealer wants to know WHAT they did I can PM you the dealer info and the work order under which it was repaired - your dealer can call mine and perhaps you can retire that item from your list of complaints.

Sorry to hear about your issues! I had the front end clunk too, and it seems to vary from person to person what item fixed the noise. For me it was the lower control arms, had that done a few months ago and the noise didn't come back. All the dealers can be pretty lazy/reluctant to listen so don't let them just lube everything up and send you on your way.

That is pretty much how the AWD system in the journeys works. It isn’t full-time AWD. Your basically running a FWD, but when the vehicle detects loss of traction, it then will engage AWD and strategically deliver power to the rear tires as well.

As stated above, thats how the AWD system works.  With that said, I find it works very well and I've had zero issues and never felt anything less than well planted to the road.  The other issues your complaining about are issues that can and should be fixed.  To allow the dealership to just not fix it is on you.  Either push harder or take your concerns to another dealership.  And there is an app for your phone that contains the owners manual for your car.  It actually works pretty nice allowing you to search for what info your looking for.  And if that isn't good enough, why not buy one off Ebay or amazon for cheap.

As everyone mentioned that is how the AWD system works... Unfortunately they also don't have a dash light or notification that the AWD is active so that probably is why you think it only works sometimes, but it is working. They do have a light that comes on when the AWD system isn't functioning so you are good to go as long as that light isn't on.

As for the rear heat, that only comes as a package with the third row configuration. Something I always like to do when I'm car shopping is go to the manufacturers website and see which packages have certain features that I want/need. Since it was a leftover though you may not have been able to find one with a third row for that good of a price. You definitely got a good deal though, I'd personally stick it out as long as you can. It should last a while and you definitely have the preferable features (V6, 6 speed, AWD).

on the no heat to the rear that could be a problem and i do agree only i live in al and no kids so not much of a problem but i do miss the rear air, as on 5 passenger journey there is no rear air.... i had a 2011 7 passenger with the rear air, didnt even think that would be a problem when i traded in on my 2014 crossroad, hindsight can be a bitch sometime, i sure wouldn't recommend the 5 passenger out any one out west or any further south than i am....

I rented an Escape and it had a display that shows where the power Is going on the AWD

Love all of the responses to his comments. I am curious if that was his first AND last post?

It seems like living with these 'issues' was unnecessary if he bought it with low miles and a factory warranty covering  these things.

But the OP isn't asking about a Ford Escape, haha. We don't get that feature in our Dodge Journeys.

Sorry not my last post,I will make a appointment and see what they have to say, there is also a recall letter that keeps showing up so I guess it's time.I am very familiar with awd,my wife has a 2012 forester 85k on it, which works well and never has not worked.I realize it's not 4wd,i have those too and have had dodge my hole life,79 1/2 ramrod package,86 1/2 le,98 3/4 12v quad ( the holy grail),still own gave it to my son,and i picked up a 2 year old new 2015 2500 slt 6.4 hemi last year. The difference between the Journeys system  and the Subaru is pretty substantial. The Subaru is lighter, and uses what they call "symmetrical AWD", this is where about 20% of the power is sent to the rear wheels at all time. The Journey however is MUCH heavier, and relies solely on the front wheels until it detects slippage via the same sensor s that let the speedometer know how fast you are going. From my experience (which is usually limited to up to 5 inches of snow), the DJ works great, but is definitely not meant to be a true snow mobile. If I'm not mistaken the DJ can only send up to 40% of it's power to the rear wheels, but through the use of sensors  it detects which wheel s should get the power and have traction. All of this may sound silly and slow, but in reality it works in about 1/40th of a second. So to answer your question, if the speedometer is working, and there are no light s on the dash then the AWD system  is in fact working. It is a very domestic vehicle, not made for heavy snow or off road use, so keep that in mind when using it in bad conditions. You should also consider snow/winter tires... If you are still using stock tires, keep in mind they are garbage in winter driving.

Sorry, I realize now that you said you know how AWD works, but it is important to know how different brands design their AWD systems to work. Subaru is popular for their rally vehicles and have developed a pretty "hardcore" AWD system , but the Journey (which is mostly used to shuttle families around) AWD is made for much more docile conditions. Hope this helps explain!

Dodge Journey Transmission Problems & Cost | A604 | 62TE

The surprisingly popular Dodge Journey was originally equipped with the A604 (41TE) transmission – the late model 2008+ Dodge Journey was equipped with the 6-speed 62TE transmission. But they aren’t without their problems though, so let’s look at some of the most common Dodge Journey transmission problems, look at cost estimates and figure out what you can do about them.

What are the DTC codes related to Dodge Journey transmission problems?

Dodge journey transmission recalls, dodge journey technical service bulletins (tsb), common dodge journey transmission problems.

Delayed forward and/or reverse engagement with a double ‘bump’ sensation – 41TE transmission Problem – Drivers may notice a significant delay when they shift into Drive or Reverse. They may also experience a series of ‘bumps’ or ‘bucks’ when the selected gear does engage. Solution – The retainer that separates the lockup control valve and the TCC accumulator valve may need to be replaced.

PRNDL lights malfunction – 41TE/42LE transmission (1996>) Problem – The PRNDL lights in the driver information center (in the gauge cluster) may work properly when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, overdrive, drive and low. However, they may malfunction when the vehicle is shifted into Park or Neutral. There may be no diagnostic trouble codes or apparent transmission problems. Solution – There may be an issue with the ignition switch, or a short in the related wiring.

Speedometer reading when the vehicle is not moving – 41TE transmission / 41TES transmission Problem – Drivers may notice that the speedometer can jump to over 20 mph while the vehicle is stopped in gear. There may also be a jerking sensation that feels like a 1-2 shift. Gear changes may also feel unusually rough. Solution – The most common cause of these 41TE transmission problems is a malfunctioning alternator. However there could also be a wiring problem related to the output shaft speed sensor OSS signal going back to the TCM.

Engine stalls while in Drive or during coast down – 62TE transmission Problem – Drivers may experience an engine stall when they place the gear selector into Drive. They may also notice that the engine starts to run excessively rough or stalls when they are coasting to a stop. Solution – These 62TE transmission problems may be caused by mechanical failure with the electronically modulated converter clutch variable force solenoid / EMCC VFS solenoid, which can cause the torque converter clutch to engage when it shouldn’t. To fix the problem, the EMCC solenoid will have to be replaced.

Transmission shifts into neutral on the 1-2 shift – 2007+ 62TE transmission Problem – Drivers may notice that the vehicle shifts into neutral upon the 1-2 shift. This may cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, where the transmission becomes locked in 3rd gear. In some cases, the vehicle may not move and will require the engine to be shut off and restarted before limp mode can be activated. Solution – These 62TE transmission problems are often caused by worn sealing ring lands on the low clutch housing. To correct this condition, place the housing and possibly the piston from the direct clutch.

Lack of Response Leaking Fluid Low Fluid Burning Smell Grinding or Shaking Whining, Clunking or Humming Refuses to Go Into Gear Torque Converter Issues Valve Body Issues Transmission Noisy in Neutral Gears Slipping No 3rd or 4th Gear No 1st or 2nd Gear No Reverse Dragging Clutch Trouble Codes / Check Engine Light

Dodge Journey transmission slipping

If your truck has the 62TE automatic and was made before 2007, sooner or later you’re going to experience the dreaded Dodge Journey transmission slip. It could happen to you on the 1-2 shift, or on the 2-3 shift. What will happen is, instead of going into the next gear, the transmission will slip out of that gear and into neutral. If this happens on the 1-2 shift, the transmission will go into limp mode where the only gear available is 3rd. If it happens on the 2-3 shift, the transmission won’t allow you to move because 3rd gear isn’t available for limp mode. To restore drivability, you will need to cycle the ignition off and then on.

What causes the Dodge Journey transmission slip?

Well, there’s actually two different reasons that your Dodge Journey transmission could slip out of gear and into neutral. For the 1-2 slip, the cause could be damaged or worn low clutch housing sealing ring lands (i.e. the bit of metal that the seals sit on). If this occurs, the direct clutch will lose pressure and keep the transmission from shifting gears. In order to fix this problem, the entire low clutch housing will need to be replaced if there is any damage or wear in the areas that the seals sit. If you decide to upgrade to a reman Dodge Journey transmission from Street Smart Transmission , you’re going to be getting a much more reliable transmission with a pristine low clutch housing.

If your Dodge Journey has a recently rebuilt transmission, then the 2-3 slip could be caused by a 2-4 clutch feed pipe that was put in backwards by the rebuilder. This will cause the 2-4 clutch to lose pressure and keep 3rd gear from engaging. To fix it, the transmission will obviously have to be disassembled so that very important part can be reinstalled the right way.

How much is it going to cost to fix my Dodge Journey transmission?

Unfortunately, the problem described here will require the removal and disassembly/partial disassembly of your transmission. Given the labor time involved to remove the transmission from the vehicle (this is not a simple task), most repair shops will recommend that you go ahead and rebuild the entire transmission while it’s out. Since they already have to tear it down to replace the Dodge Journey, it sort of makes sense to spend the extra money to do that. After all, you should get a lot more mileage out of your transmission once it’s rebuilt. And since they’ve already got the transmission apart, might as well, right?

Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Dodge Journey can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Dodge Journey transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Dodge Journey transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Dodge Journey transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Dodge Journey transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Dodge Journey transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Dodge Journey transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Dodge Journey transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed.

How to Solve Dodge Journey Transmission Problems

Solution a: buy a used dodge journey transmission.

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Dodge Journey Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Things to consider with a transmission rebuild

You’re the test driver – Most transmission repair shops and mechanics will only put a few miles on your vehicle to make sure the transmission works. But it’s not uncommon to experience transmission problems during the break-in period.

Everything might not be fixed – Most mechanics and transmission repair centers don’t have the equipment necessary to perform a thorough inspection on hard parts like gear sets, clutch drums and valve bodies. This means that your rebuilt transmission could actually have small cracks in key parts that aren’t visible to the naked eye. As time and mileage progress, these cracks can grow and create an even larger problem. Similarly, a slight warp in the valve body can seriously impact shifting performance over time.

Warranty – Although most mechanic shops and transmission repair shops will warranty their work. That coverage is usually only good at the shop or franchise that did the work. If you travel out of town and suddenly experience transmission problems, you’ll be on the hook for any transmission repairs unless you pay to have your vehicle towed back to the shop that did the work.

Quality – Nearly every time you get a transmission rebuild, all of the work is performed by a single technician. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on your point of view. But the end result is dependent on that technician’s level of experience working with your specific type of transmission. In addition, there is usually no standardized quality control checks at a mechanic shop. So an improperly torqued bolt or gasket that isn’t fully seated, might be overlooked and cause you major problems in the future.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Dodge Journey Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Why a remanufactured transmission might be a good option

If you plan to keep your vehicle for as long as possible, then getting a transmission rebuild is certainly a viable option. However, a remanufactured transmission is a much better alternative. You’re getting as close to a brand-new transmission as it is possible. Companies like Street Smart Transmission also modify the transmission to correct all of the factory design flaws, allowing you to get a much longer service life from the transmission. You also get a 3-year/unlimited mile nationwide warranty, which allows you to get necessary repairs performed at any licensed repair shop of the country. So in terms of value for the money, a reman transmission might be the better way to go.

Remanufactured transmission companies like Street Smart Transmission put each of their reman transmissions through a rigorous build process that ensures a quality product every time. It starts with nearly 100 trained technicians that specialize in different aspects of the build process.

This remanufacturing process begins with the inspection team that test all of the critical components from the donor transmission to ensure that they meet the original equipment (OE) tolerances and specifications. The case, pumps, gears, shafts, valve body and torque converter are checked for hairline cracks, metal tensile strength, warping and other parameters. If any component fails to meet the required specifications, it’s discarded and replaced.

All the parts are then cleaned and sent to the appropriate stations on the assembly line for reassembly. Throughout the process, quality control managers inspect the build to ensure that it meets the desired specification. Any necessary modifications or upgrades that are needed to correct factory design flaws are also performed or added. The valve body is rebuilt and tested on a special dyno machine to ensure that it performs according to the specifications. All of the solenoids are also tested prior to installation.

Once the build is complete and passes its final quality control inspection, the newly remanufactured transmission is sent to the dyno room, where it’s tested on a special dyno machine using a proprietary software program called C.A.R.S. (Computer Aided Real-world Simulation). This cycles the transmission through a number of real-world driving situations, to ensure that it performs according to the factory specs. It also helps to break in all of the friction components, that way it’s completely tuned and ready to go once it’s installed.

Warranty – One of the benefits of buying a remanufactured transmission vs. a rebuilt transmission is the warranty. Street Smart Transmission for example, covers all of their reman transmissions with a 3 Year/Unlimited Mileage Nationwide Warranty (there is a mileage restriction for commercial vehicles). This covers parts and labor for transmission repairs performed by any licensed repair shop in the country. It’s also completely transferable if you ever decide to sell the vehicle. Compared to a mechanics warranty on a transmission rebuild, a remanufactured transmission warranty offers superior financial protection.

Is a remanufactured transmission worth it?

Questions About 2015 Dodge Journey’s Transmission

  • What happens when you "ride" your Dodge's brakes? Keeping your foot on the brake pedal or lightly but consistently pushing it down can lead to transmission problems. Pay attention to how often you apply your brake and use engine braking when possible.
  • How much can my Dodge tow?   Think twice before offering to tow something for a friend, no matter how small it is. The added load can mess with your transmission system if it exceeds your Journey’s towing capacity. Always consult your owner's manual before towing or hauling something.
  • How often does my Journey transmission fluid need to be checked? Maintaining your Dodge Journey transmission fluid is one of the best ways to maintain your transmission's health. A general rule of thumb is to have your transmission fluid checked and changed about every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, but that timeline can change if you're hard on your Dodge. Luckily, leaks and low fluid levels are easy to spot and inexpensive to fix.
  • Can transmission fluid leak from my Dodge Journey? Yes, your Dodge Journey can develop a transmission fluid leak. As your Journey ages, parts of the transmission system might wear out or break down, leading to a leak and possible transmission issues. Common causes of transmission fluid leaks include worn seals, a damaged transmission housing, a loose or cracked transmission pan, an overfilled transmission, or faulty transmission lines.
  • Who can fix my   Dodge Journey transmission leak? If you have a problem with your transmission system, don’t hesitate to visit your local Firestone Complete Auto Care. Our expert technicians can diagnose and repair Journey transmission leaks and other issues. Schedule an appointment  today!
  • Can I drive my Dodge Journey with a transmission fluid leak? Driving your Journey with a transmission fluid leak is highly discouraged. Transmission fluid is vital to the smooth operation of your transmission system, and a leak can put the entire system at risk. A transmission fluid leak may lead to decreased performance, overheating, and possibly even transmission failure.

In the questionnaire, we ask subscribers to note any problems with their cars that occurred in the past 12 months. They are asked to identify problems that they considered serious (because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime).

A typical model has about 200 to 400 samples for each model year. For some model years, typically those of older or less popular cars, we do not have a large enough sample size to provide results of statistical confidence.

There are several ways in which a savvy car buyer can still research the quality of a car.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Update from Jun 12, 2021 : I have a 2015 Dodge Journey with the 2.4 L bought the vehicle at 46,000 miles. Now the vehicle is at 56,000 miles and the transmission started to go on Friday. Now with the video provided you can see it for yourself. I contacted the Dodge dealership & they were no help. I contacted the other dealership that I bought the vehicle from and they were no help. They say there’s nothing they could do. How could you have a transmission slip only 10,000 miles that’s crazy I’ve talk to six different mechanics and they say that makes no sense at such a low mileage they have recalls for the same make your model but it goes by vin. And apparently my vehicle wasn’t in the mix so if anybody could help, we will appreciate it

Best and worst Dodge Journey years — which to avoid

We explored the best and worst dodge journey years, pinpointing the models with the most issues and collecting honest opinions from owners, all to offer you an insightful overview of its historical reliability..

A gray Dodge Journey, one of the years to avoid, driving down a dirt road.

Before the discontinuation, the Dodge Journey was one of the best mid-size SUVs produced for a dozen generations, and Dodge didn’t give up on it due to reliability issues. However, that doesn’t mean you can just go ahead and buy any model as some model years have received quite a few complaints.

Don’t go searching through the market just yet, since our team decided to give you all the important details in one guide. We’ve scanned the NHTSA records on common complaints and recalls to give you a complete picture of best years to buy and worst Dodge Journey years to avoid . On top of that, we’ve gone an extra step as we reached out to real Journey owners for their accounts and experiences, so stay tuned for the details.

Why you can trust REREV’s advice on which car model years to avoid: Our car experts look at official data, ask real drivers what they think, and talk to experienced mechanics to make sure our list is useful. This reliable info can make buying a car easier for you. Want to know how we do it? Find out more about our research methodology .

How we rated the best and worst Dodge Journey years

During our evaluation of the Dodge Journey as a model, we’ve gone through the reports on various model years based on several sources. First, we relied on trustworthy organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and we went through their records including details on recalls and common driver complaints.

After that, we’ve done some more digging on Dodge Journey recalls through reliable platforms like Cars.com, as well as sources of authority like Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book. As mentioned, we wanted to give you honest Dodge Journey reviews and we could only do that by citing some forums with real experiences of previous drivers and Journey owners.

Most common Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey might be a safe and reliable vehicle. However, it is not exempt from faults and flaws. Among the Dodge Journey most common problems you could run upon are brake problems, defective remote keyless entry systems, interior water leaks, or even damaged head gaskets, so we’ll discuss each of those in more detail.

1. Overheating engine

Engine issues are a common issue in faulty Dodge Journey model years. For the Dodge Journey, these problems happened in the 2009-2016 model years, causing overheating once they hit the 78,000-mile mark. This problem is likely caused by coolant flow challenges due to debris locking the cylinder head coolant port at its primary thermostat housing.

At first, the vehicle’s temperature light may turn on, but this worsens over time. Some Journey owners complained that their vehicles experienced engine power loss , leading to overheating. The vehicle may also develop coolant leaks, which become excessive for its overflow reservoir, causing coolant fluid to spill over.

These engine problems are usually expensive and dangerous, depending on where they happen. For a driver, you don’t want to encounter engine issues every day.

2. Brake problems

Brake issues were the most common troubles that plagued the Dodge Journey, especially its 2009-2010 model years. The brakes on these models wear out prematurely , which happens to relatively new Journey vehicles at about 30,000 miles. Some drivers mentioned that this issue has become severe, requiring them to replace their brakes every three months.

The abovementioned issues are among the few brake-related problems you could face if you purchase a problematic Dodge Journey model year. These issues are inconvenient and dangerous, especially for driving at high speeds. You want to avoid a vehicle that struggles with maintaining proper brakes.

3. Defective remote keyless entry system

The Dodge Journey has many cool features, and the remote keyless system is supposed to be one of them. Instead, the keyless system is another Dodge Journey feature that has become problematic for drivers.

Many frustrated owners complain that the system doesn’t work correctly as it gives off either wrong key readings or the annoying “key not detected” message. The system sometimes interferes with the key fob, preventing drivers from locking or unlocking the doors. To fix this issue, owners may need to do a software update.

4. Interior water leaks

Some owners of the 2009-2018 Dodge Journey models have expressed discomfort caused by dampness inside the cabin. The cabin appears vulnerable to water leaks , typically at a low mileage of about 50,000 to 60,000 miles. According to complaints from owners, the driver’s seat floor of the Dodge Journey may become wet when they travel in the rain.

Other drivers complained that they noticed leaks near the side of the Journey, causing wet floors and carpets. Additionally, some drivers reported leaks near windows, headliners, and vents, and you may need a professional to fix the leaks and resolve the issue.

5. Damaged head gasket

This is another notorious Dodge Journey issue among vehicle owners. Drivers note that this problem commonly happens at about 100,000 miles. It might begin with performance issues and graduate to engine failure over time. This may be due to cracked or damaged head gaskets.

Some drivers have reported having leaky or blown head gaskets , causing severe damage to the engine. Experts recommend a compression test to verify if your Journey has faulty head gaskets. If they are defective, you may replace them yourself if you are a DIYer or have a professional do the job.

Worst Dodge Journey years to avoid

The Dodge Journey has had several great models; however, there are also some model years you should avoid if you intend to purchase a Dodge Journey. Below is a list of Journey model years to avoid:

Naturally, our team will get you through all these model years and their issues so you can have an easier time picking the most reliable Journey model.

First-generation Journey (2009-2012 model years)

The 2009 Dodge Journey was the first model of this generation, and it was associated with numerous problems and complaints from drivers. Its prevalent issue was with the brakes, and many drivers complained of frequent brake replacements within a short timeframe. These drivers point out that the vehicle is too heavy for the brake pads and rotors.

Other drivers reported that regardless of how gentle you are with the vehicle, it doesn’t stop the brakes from wearing out at 30,000 miles or earlier. Additionally, the braking power isn’t sufficient for the size of the vehicle and can lead to disastrous accidents in the worst cases.

Another issue of the 2009 model year was with its transmission, which caused rough gear shifting . Some drivers complained that shifting the vehicle out of the first gear was difficult, especially during cold weather. Also, several drivers report that their transmission fails at around 60,000 miles, causing them to abandon the vehicle.

The 2009 and 2010 models were also plagued by electrical faults that prevented the engine from turning over, which may be caused by the neutral safety switch losing communication with the shifter. Most drivers had to put their vehicles in neutral to get the engine to start up. Some drivers also complained that they experience these issues on other components like the horn, windows, radios, etc.

2011 Dodge model year also had issues with the brakes, but unlike the 2009-2010 models, which had brakes that required premature replacements , the 2011 model had brakes that made grinding and squealing sounds. In addition to the noises, drivers complain that their 2011 Journey shakes the steering wheel while braking.

Best Dodge Journey years

The Dodge Journey has several years, which drivers have confirmed to be reliable while offering remarkable performance. So, are you still wondering what are the best Dodge Journey years to buy? The best Dodge Journey years are 2005, 2017, and 2020. Still, there’s a full list of best-rated models:

These Dodge Journey models are some of the best years to date and provide excellent performance. If you are searching for the best Journey years to buy, these years are great choices, and they would give little to no problems without any cause for expensive repairs.

2005 Dodge Journey

Based on all the available NHTSA records and reliability reports, the 2005 Dodge Journey is the best model to date. It only received a few complaints including some engine cooling difficulties, but none of those reports were sufficient to place the model on a list of problematic years.

With a clean reliability record , the model scored a decent overall rating of 4 out of 5 based on reliable automotive agencies.

2017 Dodge Journey

As for the later model years, the 2017 Dodge Journey made it to the list as one of the most reliable options. It received model-specific concerns with some of the main complaints being related to A/C heater faults and electrical malfunctions.

2020 Dodge Journey

Finally, we can’t leave out the 2020 Journey model which also proved to be pretty reliable with just under 10 reliability concerns. Among those, drivers have mostly reported problems with seat belts and brakes, while the model received an overall rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Cars.com and similar sources.

Is the Dodge Journey worth buying?

The Dodge Journey is an excellent SUV with remarkable performance. However, it doesn’t have a reasonable edge over its rivals, as consumers complain that the vehicle is made from cheap interior materials and lacks a host of safety features that can be found in most competitors.

If you’re eyeing versatile SUVs check out Ford Explorer Sport Trac years to avoid , Nissan Xterra years to avoid , or Mitsubishi Outlander years to avoid . While these vehicles are known for their ruggedness and capability, it’s vital to consider that not all model years have lived up to expectations.

What is the most common problem with the Dodge Journey?

The remote keyless entry system is Dodge Journey’s most reported issue. According to drivers, the system gives off the wrong readings or the u0022key not detectedu0022 message.

Is a Dodge Journey a reliable car?

The Dodge Journey is reliable as long as you keep away from its worst model years.

How many miles can you expect from a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey can last up to 200,00 miles under ideal maintenance conditions.

Should I buy a Dodge Journey?

Yes, you can buy a Dodge Journey; however, you want to avoid buying its worst years. Also, it would be best if you considered its interior before making a purchase.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

dodge journey 2015 transmission problems

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Being sick never feels nice. Imagine asking for help in this state while being in a foreign country…You would need to strain your memory while struggling to remember any Russian words or phrases. Speaking a foreign language alone is stressful enough, add to this a state of being sick and you’ll find yourself completely frustrated. But what if you could speak Russian without stress, automatically and effortlessly? I’m not suggesting you to buy some super awesome course that will make you learn Russian in 7 days. In fact, I’m not suggesting you to buy anything at all :) I simply want to show you a few effective learning techniques that will help you overcome your language barrier. So, just let me know if you’re interested in joining the effective language learners community ;)
What do you tell a taxi driver, how do you use one of Russia’s minivan taxis and how far does a “one-ride” ticket in the metro take you? Find these great tips in our article  Navigating In Russian Cities .  We’ll make sure you never get lost in Russia!
If you do want to try out your luck with approaching “busy people of the capital”, you might want to consider being at least a bit prepared for it, i.e. in case you don’t want to be shoved away on the spot, you might need a few handy phrases to start off a conversation and grab local’s attention by saying something in Russian. But you should also be ready for a rather fast and at some point harsh answer. The good news is that there’s a way to be prepared for such situations. And I can show you how.

Moscow, like other international urban areas , is decentralizing, despite considerable barriers. The expansion will lead to even more decentralization, which is likely to lead to less time "stuck in traffic" and more comfortable lifestyles. Let's hope that Russia's urban development policies, along with its plans to restore population growth, will lead to higher household incomes and much improved economic performance.

Note 1: The 23 ward (ku) area of Tokyo is the geography of the former city of Tokyo, which was abolished in the 1940s. There is considerable confusion about the geography of Tokyo. For example, the 23 ward area is a part of the prefecture of Tokyo, which is also called the Tokyo Metropolis, which has led some analysts to think of it as the Tokyo metropolitan area (labor market area). In fact, the Tokyo metropolitan area, variously defined, includes, at a minimum the prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama with some municipalities in Gunma, Ibaraki and Tochigi. The metropolitan area contains nearly three times the population of the "Tokyo Metropolis."

Note 2: The expansion area (556 square miles or 1,440 square kilometers) has a current population of 250,000.

Note 3: Includes all residents in suburban districts with at least part of their population in the urban area.

Note 4: Urban area data not yet available.

Road in city area.

The roads and ways of the city areas are very clumsy and many accidents are happening due to the short road. But you need to maintain the driving properly otherwise you may face accident. So now the government decided to expand the road which may put the positive effect on automobile sector. I think it is a helpful service for the society people. If you have a BMW car and you have faced any problem then better to repair it at BMW Repair Spring, TX for the best service.

Transit & transportation

Transit and transportation services are quite impressive in most of the urban cities; therefore people were getting better benefits from suitable transportation service. Urban cities like Moscow, Washington, New York and Tokyo; we have found high margin of transportation system that helps to build a better communication network in these cities. I hope through the help of modern transportation system we are able to bring revolutionary change in automobile industries; in this above article we have also found the same concepts to develop transportation system. Moscow is bursting Noblesse

Moscow is bursting Noblesse at the seams. The core city covers more than 420 square miles (1,090 kilometers), and has a population of approximately 11.5 million people. With 27,300 residents per square mile (10,500 per square kilometer), Moscow is one percent more dense than the bleach anime watch city of New York, though Moscow covers 30 percent more land. The 23 ward area of Tokyo (see Note) is at least a third more dense, though Moscow's land area is at least half again as large as Tokyo. All three core areas rely

Russians seeing the light while Western elites are bickering?

What an extremely interesting analysis - well done, Wendell.

It is also extremely interesting that the Russian leadership is reasonably pragmatic about urban form, in contrast to the "planners" of the post-rational West.

An acquaintance recently sent me an article from "The New Yorker", re Moscow's traffic problems.

The article "abstract" is HERE (but access to the full article requires subscription)

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/08/02/100802fa_fact_gessen

One classic quote worth taking from it, is: "People will endure all manner of humiliation to keep driving".

I do find it odd that the "New Yorker" article author says nothing at all about the rail transit system Moscow had, on which everyone was obliged to travel, under Communism. It can't surely have vaporised into thin air?

Moscow is a classic illustration of just how outmoded rails are, and how important "automobility" is, when the auto supplants rails so rapidly than even when everybody did travel on rails up to a certain date, and the road network dates to that era, when nobody was allowed to own a car; an article written just 2 decades later does not even mention the rail transit system, other than to criticise the mayor for "failing to invest in a transit system".......!!!!!!!!

This is also a give-away of "The New Yorker's" inability to shake off the modern PC ideology on rails vs cars.
