This was the first wine tour I went on in Portugal, and it impressed me so much I felt that it deserved to be first on this comprehensive guide.

The Authentic Douro Wine Tour Including Lunch and River Cruise  felt like I was living in some type of fairytale, where time didn’t exist and all stress melted away. Of course, I’m sure the delicious wine helped a bit with that!

Okay, so this tour is a full-day experience starting out at 8:30 am, so we had all day long to enjoy the tranquil countryside in our small group setting.

This isn’t one of those tours where a massive crowd of people is following a guide around, struggling to try and hear and see what they’re talking about. Rather, this is an intimate setting with a maximum 8 participants allowed so everyone receives a personalized experience.

In my case, it was Quinta do Tedo, which is an insane 18th-century estate right where the Douro and Tedo Rivers merge and is known for its house-style blended Ruby and Tawny Ports!

We had an educational wine-tasting session here before heading back on the road, stopping at the amazing Pinhão, which played a massive role in the commerce and transport of wine from Douro to Porto.

Finally, we ended up at Quinta do Beijo, where we tried even more wines while learning about how each one is produced and the differences between them.

After picking us up at our hotel in Porto, we drove out in our comfy air-conditioned minivan down the winding roads overlooking the beautiful landscape of the valley.

On our journey, our guide was there to animatedly narrate quite the comprehensive account of Portuguese history, how it came to be, and cultural insight.

We took my favorite kind of stop – a coffee break – to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air before continuing on Sabrosa, which is known for its basket weaving, embroidery, and cheesemaking!

Here, we ventured through 2 charming wineries where we were taught how they produce their wine, as well as some additional history behind the Douro Region.

The wine was incredible – probably  too  incredible – so I was glad we had a filling, tasty Portuguese 3-course lunch to balance it out. After fueling up, we set out to Pinhão where we took some photos at a spectacular viewpoint (honestly so much more impressive in person than in photos!).

We then boarded a traditional Rebelo boat for a nearly one-hour scenic cruise down the river, which was so tranquil and offered such a different perspective of the area than the viewpoints did!

Before visiting another famous winery in Folgosa, we drove down National Road 222, which I learned is considered to be the most beautiful road in the world! With so much beauty, great company, learning opportunities, and tasty wine and food, what’s not to love?!

After that, we enjoyed a filling traditional Portuguese lunch where we had time to relax and chat with the rest of our small group and our guide about what we’d experienced so far.

We also tried 2 different Douro DOC wines before heading to a magnificent wine tasting and gourmet olive oil tasting in Pinhão, which most tours did not offer! Last but not least, we followed it up with a visit to a 5-star wine producer where we learned firsthand everything from growing the grapes to bottling it!

Starting off early in the morning, the guide came to pick us up right from our hotel which was nice and convenient as we were bringing along jackets and small bags.

We got to enjoy guided tours of 2 different well-reputed wineries, where we got to learn about each of their winemaking processes, the history behind each, and try plenty of samples!

At this point I was ready for lunch, and we had an amazing selection of classic Portuguese dishes paired with either a white or red.

While the wine-tasting part is obviously not for everyone, I will say that this is a great tour option for the entire family to learn about and see this majestic region!

We couldn’t leave out the quaint Quinta do Beijo, where the actual owner of the property came out to give us a tour of the property and explain his production and flavor process!

I know it depends on the time available, but we got lucky and were able to do a quick visit to D’Origem for a tasting of DOC Douro wines as well as some olive oil! It was a fantastic day, and while it did last all day, it was an unforgettable journey!

The BEST Douro Valley Tour from Porto (An Authentic Small Group Wine Tour!)

On my recent trip to Porto, Portugal I spent so much time researching, comparing and reading reviews to find the best Douro Valley tour from Porto. One of the main reasons I came to Portugal was to visit this beautiful wine region, and while I definitely wanted to try the local wines, I was equally interested in seeing the beautiful natural landscapes and charming rural farms. 

It was super-important to me to find a Douro Valley tour from Porto that made meaningful connections with the local communities, supported independent wineries, avoided tourist traps and operated with groups that were small enough to ensure everyone’s needs were met.

After carefully considering all of the possible tours to the Douro Valley, talking to locals and checking with travelers who had done similar day trips, I narrowed down my search to one specific tour called “Douro Valley Cruise with Winery Visit and Lunch” .  This tour ticked all the boxes I was looking for:

• A family-run business with roots in the Douro Valley 👪
• Transportation in small luxury vans instead of big tour buses 🚐
• Visits to independent local wineries 🍷

• Lunch options that accommodated vegetarians (like me) and other dietary restrictions 🍅

Fortunately, the Douro Valley tour that I chose ended up being just as good as advertised. Keep reading to find out what you can expect during the day, and why I recommend this specific tour above any others.  

Disclosure: I paid full price for my Duoro Valley tour from Porto and didn’t disclose that I was a travel blogger, so this is a completely unbiased review.

Starting Our Duoro Valley Tour from Porto

I booked my Douro Valley tour from Porto several days in advance, which was smart because this tour often sells out (as I write this I can see they’re already sold out for tomorrow).  The day before they contacted me to confirm our departure time and location, and to remind me to have breakfast before the tour.  This is really important (!) as you’ll be lunching on Portuguese time, which could be as late as 2:30 or 3:00 pm (yes, you’ll have snacks throughout the morning but I still recommend eating a hearty breakfast).

The meeting point for my group was just an eight-minute walk from my hotel in Porto, so I set out ten minutes early. When I arrived, I found that we were a group of about fifteen people, so we would be divided across three air-conditioned vans for the day. Our guides were intentional in grouping solo travelers together, and couples of about the same age together, so that you were likely to meet someone you’d enjoy spending the day with.

Once we were all in the vans (with me in the front passenger seat!) we set out for the drive to the Douro Valley, which takes about an hour and is absolutely beautiful!  Along the way we learned more about the family that runs these days trips, including the guide for my group (João), his brothers, cousins and father, and the community members who feel like family.

Visiting a Local Winery in the Douro Valley

Our Douro Valley tour from Porto started at Quinta do Beijo winery, near the village of Celeirós.  We were first greeted by the owner himself before being whisked off into the vineyard to learn how they produce table wines and ports.  Our host had a great sense of humor and made sure that everyone enjoyed learning about local varietals, the harvesting process, and how the grapes eventually become the wine that we drink.  

I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say that there are some surprises that will make your visit to this particular vineyard really stand out! 

Wine Tasting on a Douro Valley Tour from Porto

Of course, it wouldn’t be a wine tour without wine tastings!  The tastings began here at Quinta do Beija with three of their wines: one rosé and two reds.  Then, we moved on to sampling two of their ports, and we learned the #1 secret for enjoying Portuguese port wine properly: always serve port slightly chilled, never serve it at room temperature!

As you can see from the photo, there was also bread (with homemade olive oil), cheese and charcuterie to accompany our first wine tasting. 

Private Boat Cruise on the Douro River

Our next stop was the town of Pinhão, which is a popular home base for wine tourists spending a week or weekend in the Douro Valley.  Located at the confluence of two rivers, it offers some of the most beautiful views of the Douro vineyards and natural landscapes.

Here, our group was divided across two small boats, each with a captain and a tour guide (our guide also considered himself to be a “River Pirate”).  We sailed down the river for about thirty minutes as we learned more about the history of wine-making in the Douro Valley. We also learned about how the climate and geology of the Douro Valley work together in harmony to produce some of Portugal’s best growing conditions.  

About thirty minutes into the boat trip our guide paused his presentations to whip up a signature local cocktail: port and tonic.  Made from white port, tonic water, a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint, this cocktail was perfect for a hot summer day (and I say that as someone who doesn’t like G&Ts!).  Our drinks were served with light snacks including bread, olive tapenade, cheese from the Azores and homemade pumpkin jam.

After our Douro River cruise we got back in our vans and headed up to the hills to one of the panoramic viewing points overlooking the Douro River.  We had ample time to take photos (and to pose for photos taken by our guides, who could moonlight as paparazzi based on how many photos they took of us throughout the day!). 

I should mention that after our Douro Valley tour, when we were back in Porto we all received a link via email to download the photos that our guides had taken on their own phones throughout the day.  It was nice to have a few candid shots from the day that I didn’t even realize I’d been in! 📸 

As we were driving up the hills to the lookout point, we passed buses from several other tour companies that I’d considered booking with. I can’t tell you how glad I was to be in a small van on those twisty, turn roads!  I was also glad that our tastings and cruises had been done in much smaller groups than the big crowds I could see through the bus windows.

A Late Lunch… and Many More Wine Tastings on Our Douro Valley Tour from Porto

I have to confess that at our second wine tasting stop of the day (which was also where we ate lunch) I didn’t take as many photos as I should have!  The good news is that means you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise when you take in your surroundings (and take in all that wine!) at the lunch stop. 

As I mentioned earlier, lunch likely won’t be served until 2:30 or 3:00 pm, so it’s good to have a big breakfast on the morning of the tour.

On our tour, lunch wasn’t served at a second winery, but rather at the family home of a local wine-making family.  Located in a village of only 125 residents, their family home is hundreds of years old and they still cook food over actual fire in their rustic kitchen. Despite the old-fashioned cooking equipment they easily accommodated my vegetarian diet, and I saw that they also had gluten-free options for one of the girls on the tour.  Just make sure to let them know your dietary restrictions after you book.    

As soon as we sat down we were poured big glasses of the family’s red and white table wine.  The white wine was definitely a big hit, with many people from the tour buying a bottle (or two, or three…) to take home afterwards. 

This was served with an appetizer spread including bread, olive oil, local olives, tomato salad and black-eyed peas (with or without tuna).  The wine flowed like the Douro River as we moved into our main courses (for me, it was a mushroom risotto, while the carnivores appeared to have steak and potatoes).

Finally, we had dessert, which was “drunken cake”, a regional specialty.  This sponge cake is made with port wine in the batter, then served with a warm port wine sauce (and a glass of port wine on the side too!).

As we settled into the late afternoon and everyone was in very good spirits, we continued with several more port tastings. Since it’s listed right in the tour description I don’t think I’m spoiling anything to say that one highlight is when a certified sommelier opens a bottle of vintage port using a very unusual technique!       

Douro Valley Tour from Porto Review

Overall, this day was exactly what I’d wanted from my Douro Valley tour from Porto. We had a full day in which we made the most of our time, but it always felt and relaxed and fun. I got to sample more wine than I could every possibly remember, but along the way I also saw some landscapes, vineyards and winemakers that I’ll never be able to forget.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Porto, and even if you only have two or three days in the city I think you’d be crazy not to add this to your itinerary.  I’m confident that the family that runs these tours will always adapt them to be the best match for the group they’re hosting and the current conditions in the Douro Valley, so even if your tour is slightly different than mine I’m positive it will be absolutely amazing.

Obviously I can’t personally recommend any other tours of the Douro Valley from Porto, but these are a few of the options that I considered when I was shopping around for tours:

• Wine Tour with Lunch, Tastings and River Cruise – This is one of the cheapest Douro Valley tours from Porto. You’ll save some money, but you’ll be on a big tour bus.
• Small Group Wine Tasting Tour, Lunch & Boat – This is an alternative Douro Valley tour from Porto that goes by van. It lacks the family touch of the tour that I recommend, but could be a good alternative if my recommendation is sold out.
• Douro Valley at Sunset (+ Comedy Show?) – This one sounds kind of out there, but it’s a new tour organized by the same family who ran the tour that I took so I trust them. It also starts at 3:00 pm, so it’s ideal for anyone who isn’t an early riser. If you go, let me know how it was!

This was a very helpful article as I have identified a tour to the Douro Valley as my #1 choice of things to do there. My problem is that most of your recommendations are 9 or 10 hour trips. Unfortunately, our ship arrives at 9:00 am and departs at 7:00 pm, so even if I could find a tour that would pick us up at our ship, at 9:30 am, I would have to be back by (?) 6:00 pm. Any thoughts?

We are actually staying in the Douro Valley for 3 days so would like to book a small group tour one of those days, looks like most of the 9 hour tours leave from Porto though, would you recommend we even book a tour or just go on our own to wineries – we will have a rental car, and will be going to Porto for a day during one of those 3 days we are staying in the area.

If you already have a rental car, then I wouldn’t recommend a tour. Instead drive around to the main villages, and go to the wineries yourself.

The Douro Valley is a wine region of Portugal with more than two thousand years of existence . For centuries, grapes have been planted and harvested by hand on its steep terraces that end by the Douro river (hence the name).

This valley represents one of the most beautiful landscapes in Portugal .

Several reasons confer the Alto Douro wine-growing region the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO : its cultural importance, its fertile land and the particular climate, and the world-renowned quality of its wines.

It is also the oldest demarcated wine region in the world .

The Douro River originates in Spain, in Soria, where it is called the “Duero”, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, on the coast of Matosinhos , very close to the center of Porto . Throughout its course, it crosses and joins the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

For the city of Porto, it is of special importance, as it has historically served as a promoter of trade flows, communicating the metropolis with several neighboring cities.

For the distribution of Port wine the river has been its main channel. Traditionally, it was through the waterway that the wine was transported from the Douro valley to the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia . Once aged, it is then marketed to the rest of the world.

This river trip was done decades ago in boats called Rabelos , and you can still admire them in the Douro River by the Dom Luis Bridge or in front of the wineries .

Today the grapes and wine are transported in small trucks that you can see moving around the Douro Valley, especially at the end of the summer, during the grape harvest season.

One question many visitors ask is about the types of wines that are produced? In the valley, not only port wine is made. The Douro Valley also produces some of the best red and white wines in Portugal and the world.

In Porto, you can visit the cellars , learn how the wines are produced, and enjoy a Port Wine tasting session .

However, it is in the Douro Valley Wineries where you can live the whole, real experience.

Visiting a “Quinta” (the Portuguese equivalent of estates, where grapes are grown), walk through its vineyards, enjoy the fantastic views, and taste the best wines of the Douro region, that's what you want to experience. And it is something we highly recommend doing as a day trip from the city.

On a road with unique landscapes, it takes about an hour and a half by car. The only disadvantage is that you won't be able to extend your tasting if you have to drive back.

Now, how far it's the Douro Valley from Porto? Short of 60 miles (97 km), and the trip, by car , is about 1 hour 15 minutes. But it really depends on where you're going to, because there are two main towns with wineries close to Porto.

You can take the train from Campanhã station to Peso da Régua (Regua station).

The trip takes 2 hours each way and the ticket costs around 20€, depending on your choice.

There's another train station in the Douro, it's called “Pinhão” . It is within walking distance of two beautiful Quintas and restaurants.

Both trips can be booked within the cp.pt (“Trains of Portugal”).

Another terrific alternative, although more expensive than the regular train, is to get on the historic train in Peso da Régua , which goes to the area of Tua on the banks of the river in a steam locomotive built in 1925. See all the information on the official website . The disadvantage of this option is that the train arrives in the city center, and you have to find your way around the area.

You can also take a guided tour from Porto. Some companies use the bus, the train or even the river cruise. This alternative allows you to relax, better enjoy the experience and do the wine tasting without having to worry about driving back to Porto.

Having visited Porto three times, we clearly love this beautiful city in Portugal. It truly is one of our favorite places in Europe. A lot of people pop into Porto for just a day, be it before their Douro Valley River Cruise or on a day trip on their Portuguese adventure. Because this city is so compact, Porto is a very walkable city, and it is easy to see many of its top attractions in just one day.

While we recommend at least a few days in Porto, it is possible to see a lot, as all the main attractions are located close to the city center. So, we have created the perfect one-day in Porto Itinerary to make the most of your short stay.

One Day in Porto Itinerary

Porto is Portugal’s second largest city but it still feels small. The historic center is walkable and with easy and affordable public transport, Ubers and an organized walking route, you can see a lot in a short time.

If you only have one day in Porto, we suggest using Uber to get around. We found them to be very reliable and affordable. Also, if you plan on going into a lot of Porto attractions and using public transport you may consider the Porto Card. We didn’t use the Porto Card for one day, but you can check out what is included here.

A lot of our suggestions are easily walkable once you get to the area that we suggest. We have a map at the bottom of this post that you can follow. And we will suggest where and when to take an Uber and when to walk.

Livraria Lello

Harry Potter fans will want to head straight to Livrario Lellow to start your one-day itinerary. Call an Uber from your hotel and make your way to R. das Carmelitas for the first entry into this world’s most beautiful bookstore. It is rumored that Hogwarts’ winding staircases were modeled after Livraria Lello’s beautiful baroque staircases, but JK Rowling denies that. Either way, there is an entire section dedicated to the beloved series, and you will feel as if you have entered a magical bookshop.

Many people have the most beautiful bookstore in the world on their list during their Porto itinerary, but many people also miss out due to a lack of planning. Make sure to book your timed entry in advance. The bookstore opens at 9:00 am, and you will want to book a golden ticket that lets you skip the line and gives you a free book of your choice. Even if you booked the golden ticket and can skip the line, show up at 8:00 to be at the front. We tell you exactly what to do here.

Igrega do Carmo

Once you’ve finished at Livraria Lello, walk toward the nearby square to see the iconic tiles of Igrega do Carmo. It is one of the most popular walls of tiles in Portugal, and you can get an iconic photograph in the doorway. Yes, we are guilty of taking that exact shot. The square itself is beautiful but busy. Tours stop here to talk about the church, which has a gorgeous fountain standing at its center.

When you visit Porto, you will be in awe. The historic center was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and for good reason. Its winding streets, historic churches adorned with Azuelos (Portuguese tiles), and beautiful buildings are something you will never forget.

Cafe Majestic

If you didn’t have breakfast at your hotel, which we highly recommend doing because booking a hotel that includes breakfast saves you a ton of money and time, make your way to the Majestic Cafe for Breakfast. Start your walk uphill, and if you don’t want to eat at Cafe Majestic, there are some great breakfast places just up from Igrega do Carmo. We enjoyed a fantastic breakfast, Zenith Brunch and Cocktails, and Restaurant Carlos Alberto, both located on Praça de Carlos Alberto, at a more reasonable price.

However, you are only going to be in Porto for one day, so we think you’ll want to eat at one of its most popular cafes. Cafe Majestic was once touted as the most beautiful cafe in the world. It, too, has Harry Potter connections, as JK Rowling frequented his cafe during her time in Porto, and it is said that she wrote the first Harry Potter book there. 

Majestic Cafe is a historic restaurant located on the pedestrian-only shopping street Rua de Santa Catarina. Once you have overpaid for your Pasteis de Nata and coffee, take a short stroll along the street to browse its unique shops and expensive boutiques. There are chocolate shops, bookstores and of course the regular Gucci and Rolex stores.

Igreja de Santo Ildefonso

Igreja de Santo Ildefonso Church is the most photographed church in Porto, thanks to its location and the 11,000 Azulejos (traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles) covering the açade and sides of the church.

We never went inside because we think churches get enough money and aren’t fans of paying to see inside, but we did enjoy the view from the steps. If you do go inside, you’ll see a 19th-century pipe organ, oil paintings, and, of course, the usual religious statues.

São Bento Train Station

There’s a lot of beauty in Porto, and the Sao Bento train station is no exception. If you haven’t seen enough of those blue tiles, or even if you have, you don’t want to miss The São Bento Train Station. It is touted as one of Europe’s most beautiful train stations thanks to its 20,000 azulejos. Each tile tells a story of Portuguese history. 

This train station was opened in 1916 on the site of a former Benedictine monastery of Saint Benedict (São Bento). Tours stop at this busy station all day long to marvel at the ceramic tiles that were painted by Jorge Colaço, one of the most renowned azulejos artists of his time. The panels depict various historical scenes from Portugal’s history, including battles, royal events, and traditional life.

Snack and Sprits at Mercado Do Bolhão

When visiting Porto, you will definitely want to visit one of its markets. For lunch, you have a few options: you can turn around and walk back the hill a little bit to visit Mercado do Bolhão, which we highly recommend, or start making your way to the waterfront. But let’s talk about the Bolhao Market. This is one of our favorite markets in Europe, and Bolhão Market is one of the most authentic and traditional markets in Porto.

Although the original structure has undergone renovations, the neoclassical facade remains. The covered market is cool and a great escape from the heat. Inside, you can sample fresh seafood, cheese, sausages, and pastries. The shop owners are friendly and passionate about their local specialties.

Wander through stalls offering a variety of cheeses, meats, and fresh produce, and savor some authentic Portuguese delicacies that pair perfectly with wine! You can order a glass of wine, Gin and Tonic, or a Porto and Tonic that you can take with you to sip on it as you wander through the aisles. 

Pastel de Nata

If you want to try some Pasteis de Nata, go across the street to the Confeteria de Balhao. It is one of the oldest bakeries in Porto, and many say it has the best Pasteis de Nata in the city. The line is huge in the morning, but later in the morning, it slows down a bit.

Porto City Hall

If you love getting those photographs of city signs, Porto City Hall is just a short walk from the Bolhaor

Cais da Ribeira

If you want to make your way to the river instead of going to the market, you can have lunch in the Ribeira district. Several restaurants and outdoor cafes line the waterfront with street performers entertaining guests as they sample Portuguese food. Cais da Ribeira is Porto’s most picturesque district, with colorful buildings lining the Douro River, and you will definitely want to spend some time exploring this neighborhood. 

Enjoy winding your walk down through the narrow streets of Porto (it’s all downhill from the Bolhao Market and São Bento Station if you take the main road), or you can take an Uber to get there faster.

Once you get to the waterfront, you will want to enjoy the energy of this lively part of the city. There are outdoor markets, restaurants, boat tours, and beautiful views of colorful buildings lining the Douro River. This is a great place to pull up a chair and enjoy some lunch (if you skipped the castle and market) or to enjoy an Aperol Spritz. 

Porto Cathedral

If you choose to go to the market, you can also have your driver drop you off at the Porto Cathedral for breathtaking views of the Douro River. It is an uphill walk to the cathedral, so you may want to hire a car to save time. It is worth visiting for the views of the city and river. The Porto Cathedral is one of the city’s oldest monuments, and it has been a religious site since the 12th century.

This is one cathedral you may want to visit. Its cloisters are beautiful, and inside, the cathedral is adorned with azulejos (blue and white ceramic tiles) that narrate religious stories.

 Afternoon

Walk across the ponte luis i bridge.

It’s time to head to the city of Novo de Gaia across the river. We loved this district, and it is the perfect place to spend the rest of the afternoon. To get to Novo de Gaia from Porto, you can walk across the famous Ponte Luis I Bridge. You can walk on the lower or upper portion of the bridge. Note that you’ll be sharing the road with cars.

If you had lunch down by the water, you could walk across the lower portion to get to Gaia, or if you went to the Porto Cathedral (which we highly recommend because you can eat dinner at the Ribeira), you could walk along the upper portion. We loved the views from the upper portion. The Ponte Luis I Bridge is 45 meters high, and the views of both cities are beautiful from up here. There are no cars driving on the upper bridge, but there are trams going back and forth, so keep an eye out.

River Cruise on the Douro River

Once you get to Gaia, you can embark on a river cruise on the Douro River to see Porto’s stunning riverside scenery. We took the 6 Bridges Cruise, which takes you from one end of the city to the other. The 50-minute cruise will give you a unique perspective of Porto’s iconic bridges and landmarks, from the vibrant streets of Cais da Ribeira to the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

You can book river cruises on the Ribeira side as well, but they are quite busy. We booked on Gaia instead. You can book your cruise in advance as well which will guarantee your time slot. It is worth seeing the entire side from a bot.

Port Wine Tasting at Vila Nova De Gaia

The waterfront of Gaia is famous for its port wine cellars, and now is the time to visit them and do a port tasting. A trip to Porto isn’t a trip without tasting its famous port wine! You don’t need to take a tour, but it is fun to visit one of the cellars. We have toured and bought wines from Taylor’s, Calem, and Foncesco, and the port wines are divine.

Calem is the easiest to visit as it is located directly on the waterfront, and they offer port-tasting flights. If you want to see the WoW District (World of Wine) Fonseco and Taylor’s are located just a short walk up. They are both less busy, but the wines are finer. We loved our port tasting experience Taylor’s is the official supplier of the Royal Family, and it was the first port of wine in space! Try out a tasting session to discover the depth and richness of these world-class wines.

Going into a port wine lodge is a wonderful experience; you feel as if you have stepped back in time and enjoyed a wine tour through these historic cellars.

Portuguese wine is as delicious as it is unique, with varieties such as Vino Verde and Port Wine. The Douro Valley is Portugal’s famous wine region, and you can book a tour of Porto in the Douro Valley if you have a few days.

Stroll the Gaia Waterfront

We enjoyed the Gaia waterfront more than the Ribeira because, for one, it has the best views of Porto (including the beautiful Riviera). You can see the colorful terraced houses rising up from the Douro River, with the cathedral and fort standing proudly overhead.

Port houses line the waterfront, showcasing the famous Portuguese wine. Gaia is much less busy than Porto and two of our favorite stores are located on the waterfront of Gaia.

Wonderful World of Portuguese Sardines

You must stop by to see the wonderful world of Portuguese Sardines. This circus-like store is a destination unto itself. Similar in style to Livraria Lello, this store has baroque staircases and walls full of thousands of colorful cans of sardines. There is a multimedia display showcasing the history of Portuguese Sardines, and it is simply a spectacle. Plus, you can buy a sardine from a year that is special to you. Why not bring home a Portuguese can with your birthdate or anniversary on it?

The Bacalau House

The Balacau House is another must-stop. This is where you can try the country’s famous Cod Cakes while enjoying another beautiful shop. The store is a part shop, museum arcade, and gallery. This shop has two winding staircases, and the Bacalau house even has live entertainment. Pull up a chair on the upper balcony, grab a serving of Bacalau accompanied by port wine, and you’ll have a true Portuguese experience.

Sunset Apperitivo

From the waterfront, you can hop on the Teleferico (cable car), which will take you back up to the top of Gaia for your sunset views. If you have the budget, we recommend having appetizers and a cocktail at the Esplanada do Teleferico. It’s a fantastic restaurant offering fantastic views of Porto from its outdoor terrace. 

Relax with a refreshing drink and take in the breathtaking skyline as the sun sets over the city.

Jardim Do Morro

If you don’t want to pay €15 to €20 for a cocktail, you can have the same view just behind the restaurant at Jardim Do Morro. Pull up a blanket and enjoy the view as the sun goes down and the lights go on over Porto.

Since you’ve had Bacalau, appetizers, and port wine, we suggest putting off dinner until later. Besides, why not embrace the Portuguese culture and eat late? So before dinner, book a Fado Show in a wine cellar. Fado is a beautiful live performance of singers accompanied by guitars. We booked this tour through Get Your Guide and loved it. The hour long performance also includes a glass of Port Wine.

Fado is a true cultural experience that is so important to Portugal that it is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is known for its expressive and profoundly melancholic character, typically conveying themes of longing, sadness, and nostalgia. The music is intensely emotional, aiming to evoke a feeling of ‘saudade’ a Portuguese term that describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for something or someone that one loves.

Depending on where your hotel is located (or if you are willing to take a taxi or uber which are very affordable) you will want to choose where to have dinner and evening drinks. The Ribeira, Gaia Waterfront, or Rua de Santa Catarina are all great dining choices.

There are so many delicious and authentic restaurants in Porto that it’s easy to be overwhelmed, but just relax, enjoy, and do what we do… look for restaurants that seem to be full of locals.

Francesinha – A Porto Staple

One food you will want to try at dinner is francesinha. This sandwich sounds disgusting, but it is delicious. Most restaurants serve it and after all that port wine and cocktails, it will help to soak up the alcohol. So what is it? This is a hearty sandwich made of sausage, cheese, ham, more meat, and bread served with a tomato beer sauce.

Nightlife at Galerias de Paris Street

For nightlife, make your way to Galleria Paris near the Livraria Lello Bookstore for bar hopping. You finish your day where you began. This is where the locals hang out into the wee hours of the morning.

How to Get to Porto

By Air : The primary gateway by air is through Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (also known as Porto Airport), located approximately 11 kilometers from the city center. The airport hosts a variety of international and domestic flights, connecting Porto with major cities across Europe and beyond. From the airport, travelers can reach the city center via the metro (the Violet E line directly connects the airport to the Trindade metro station in the city center), bus, taxi, or ride-sharing services.

By Train : For travelers coming from other parts of Portugal or from Spain, trains are a convenient option. Porto’s main train station, Sao Bento Station, is located in the heart of the city and is well-connected to the Portuguese rail network. Another key station is Campanhã, which is on the east side of the city and serves as the main hub for trains arriving from Lisbon, the Algarve, and international destinations such as Spain. From Campanhã, passengers can take a local train or the metro to reach the central areas of Porto and Sao Bento Station.

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . 1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

When you first arrive take a stroll around the city and stop in for a cup of coffee. The coffee there is delicious! Starting a new city with a free walking tour is the best. Yes its' free- they work off of tips. Although walking tours don't take you inside buildings, they give you a feel for the city and an introduction to the history. Portugal is very hilly so make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes! The steep climbs are worth it when you approach the top and take in the beautiful panoramic sights of Porto. Take a walk the Igreja dos Carmelitos and Igrega do Carmo - These are two churches separated by a tiny little house (Casa Escondida- the hidden house). It was built so that the two churches would not share a common wall and to prevent any relations between the nuns of the Igreja dos Carmelitos and the monks of the Igreja do Carmo. Visit the Sao Bento Train Station and admire the blue and white tiles surrounding the walls. It's so mesmerizing seeing the intricacy of the tiles and how they were put together piece by piece to create the artwork you see today. You see these blue and white tiles all over Portugal. Porto Cathedral - Another must visit spot- this is located in the center of the city. Igreja De Sao Nicolau - Another church where you will see the blue and white tile. Although the church was destroyed by a fire and later rebuilt, the tile was placed much later in the 1860's. Palacio Da Bolsa - This was built on the site of a burned down convent. The Palacio provided Porto with a site for its stock exchange. Each room inside the Palacio is vastly different. As you walk around, you will see the different styles throughout the building. One very different room is the Arab Room- which was decorated in the Moorish style. It is unlike any other room in the building but absolutely stunning. Igreja de Sao Francisco - It was initially a small church and convent, but later part of the temple was destroyed by a fire and the Stock Exchange was built. The window is the only original decor. The Lello Library - This is a gorgeous bookstore where supposedly J.K. Rowling got her inspiration for the Harry Potter staircase. It gets quite busy there. Buy tickets in advance and get there early as there is always a very long line to get in. If you love port, you came to the right place. Porto has many port houses that have tours and tastings. Some of the more popular ones require a reservation ahead of time. So make sure you go on their website and see if one can be made. Take a fun leisurely stroll over the Ponte Luis Bridge to Gaia on the other side of the Douro River where all of the port houses are located. Check out some of the well knows port houses such as Sandeman, Cockburns, and Taylor. The mood in Gaia is so lively. It is full of waterfront cafes and bars. Stop in one of the rooftop bars for some live music, fun crowd, and breezes from the waterfront.

Things to Do in Lisbon:

Lisbon Cathedral

Convento do Carmo

The easiest way to get to Lisbon from Porto is by train. You can book the train tickets up to 60 days in advance and it takes about three hours. Again, my suggestion is to start Lisbon off with a free walking tour. A reservation ahead of time is required as they only have a limited amount of spots per time slot. Some guides may be great and others not so much. You don't know who you are going to get, but the beauty of this is that they are free so although it's not very nice you can always choose to leave the tour early. Lisbon is made up of several unique neighborhoods. Alfama is very picturesque with narrow streets, tiled buildings, and quintessential beauty on every corner. The oldest neighborhood in the city, Alfama transports you to another world. Here you can visit the Pantheon and the Lisbon Cathedral. Baixa is a hotspot of the city. Visit the Commerce Square, which was considered the door to Lisbon as this was where commercial ships would unload their goods. Or go see the Santa Justa Elevator- a tower that links downtown to the Chiado district up on the hill. Chiado is the shopping area. Here you will find a series of boutiques, cafes, and bookstores. The oldest bookstore in the world is located here. Make your way to the Convento do Carmo. This is Lisbon's greatest medieval building, which sits as a reminder of the devastating earthquake that happened in 1775, which destroyed most of the city. The roof had collapsed as a Mass was happening and it was never rebuilt. Bairro Alto is one of the higher points in Lisbon. Walk along the cobbled streets and take in the true spirit of Lisbon. With the relaxed atmosphere, enjoy having a drink at one of the many cafes and listen to traditional Fado music. This is the neighborhood, a mix of traditional and modern, is where you want to go to for the nightlife. This is where the party happens. People enjoy sitting outside in the fresh air with a drink in hand.

Things to Do in Lagos:

Want to take a break from sightseeing and have some relaxation time? From Lisbon, take a car to Lagos, in the Algarve part of Portugal, and spend 1-2 nights there depending how many days you can spare in your trip. My recommendation would be at least 2 nights just so you don't feel rushed. Lagos is a coastal town made up of giant rock formations and nice beaches to just sit and relax. Enjoy some fun in the sun and lounge by the pool. Take a walk over to the beach and feel the sand between your toes but keep in mind the water in Portugal is very cold. You can't really swim in there for too long. In the evening, take an Uber to the lively town center that has many restaurants, bars, live music, and street entertainment. Walk over to the marina and take in the essence of the area. The second full day, charter a boat that will take you around to the different caves and show you the different parts of Lagos by sea. This is especially fun for a group to go on. Sail with a drink in hand and snacks provided by the crew while the captain is giving you some history about the area. Enjoy a day out on the water and breathe in the fresh salty air. You're not one that can sit and relax too long? No problem. you can adventure off the boat and do some snorkeling or paddleboarding.

I would highly recommend a day trip to the Douro Valley from Porto and experience the oldest wine region of the world. It is best to book a private tour from Porto, where a driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you there. It's about an hour and half ride. The guide takes you to a selection of wineries, provides lunch at a restaurant on site followed by a sailboat ride on the Douro River while you enjoy the beautiful landscapes. Escape Lisbon for a half a day and visit Sintra and Cascais. You can take an Uber from Lisbon directly to Sintra or take a quick and easy train ride. In Sintra, you would visit the amazing colorful and magical Pena Palace. It's best to purchase your tickets ahead of time to be able to avoid the long lines. You can either book a park ticket which allows you to walk around the outside of the palace and take in the stunning views from the terraces or can do a combined ticket to include going inside the palace to view the different rooms. When purchasing the tickets a time slot is chosen. You MUST enter within your time, or your ticket will not be valid anymore. After spending some time at Pena Palace take a quick Uber ride to the enchanting Quinta Da Regaleira . When you are there, you feel like you're in a fairytale. Although the inside of the Quinta itself isn't anything special, the gardens and the grounds are worth the time to stroll around and make your way to the Initiation Well. After all this walking, you deserve a break! Make your way to the town of Sintra and pick one of the many restaurants to sit down, unwind, and have a nice lunch with a glass or two of wine.

To continue the relaxation, take an Uber to Cascais, a seaside town only 20 minutes from Sintra and 30 minutes from Lisbon on the Portuguese Riviera, that used to be the summer retreat for the royal family and other Portuguese nobility. With its beautiful cobblestone streets, relaxing atmosphere, and magnificent coastline you can explore the entire town by foot. Cascais is the perfect blend of modern and traditional. Visit the lively town center, enjoy some fresh seafood at a local eatery, eat some delightful pastries or delicious gelato, or just relax at the sandy beach while staring at the clear turquoise water and hear the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks. You won't be disappointed with anything you choose to do here.

Places to eat & drink in Portugal

RIS8TTO - Located in the Baixa section, sit on the terrace and enjoy a selection of different risottos.

Espaco Porto Cruz - Located in the Gaia section on the riverfront, is an incredible restaurant and lounge. Try all the different appetizers - you wont be disappointed- Everything tasted so fresh and was just decadent. You can try Portugal's famous Vinho Verde "green wine" here or try some other wines from the Douro Valley. Portugal is a fairly inexpensive country- so a meal here is priced very reasonably, and you may even be shocked at the final total.

Abadia do Porto - Is a very traditional and authentic Portuguese restaurant. You see a lot of locals come here so you know it's a good place.

The View - rooftop bar featuring live music and a good atmosphere.

Time out Market - This essentially is a huge food hall with many different and delicious options. Although, this place may feel overwhelming as their are so many places to choose from, you can try a little bit from a couple booths to fulfill your tastebuds with different textures and flavors.

Pastéis de Belém - Stop in here for the best Pasteis de Nata, a Portuguese egg tart. Although, there are many places that make them- you will notice some are better than others. So just walk around and try from the different local eateries.

Sea Me - In Chiado an innovative concept mixing a fish market and seafood restaurant serving freshly caught fish and a touch of Japanese sushi. You MUST make a reservation here ahead of time or you will not be able to get in. You can start your experience with some sushi or other seafood appetizers. In this unique place you choose the featured fresh fish off the boat laying over ice and how you would like it prepared.

Taberna Do Lis - A charming Portuguese tavern in the Baixa area of Lisbon. Sit inside to enjoy the nice atmosphere. The Portuguese steak is a must try! The octopus was a fairly big portion and was delicious.

Espada Restaurant and Bar - A contemporary restaurant located in the Chiado section puts a twist on local Portuguese cuisine. Order several of the shared plates/tapas and try a little bit of everything.

Belcanto - This Michelin rated restaurant in the Bairro Alto area is on the world's best list. The tasting menu takes you on a gastronomic journey making your taste buds come to life and taste flavors you never knew existed. Although Portugal tends to be inexpensive, this restaurant is one of the most expensive ones in Lisbon. You can either sit at the chef's table or dine in the elegant dining room.

Douro River Valley

Port, port, and more port!

The end of this grand adventure landed us in Porto, the home of (the distribution of) Port! Woohoo! Fortified wine for the win!

We stayed in a small studio near the center of the north side of the Douro River. We only had 2 full days here, and we used them fully. I had tried to book hotels through Booking.com or directly through the hotels because I had read about the impact AirBnbs are having on locals being pushed out of their familial homes in Portuguese cities due to extreme gentrification. However, I booked this on Booking.com and didn’t realize that it is likely exactly what I was trying to avoid. Nonetheless, it was comfortable, albeit very small, but and well located.

Day 1 was a 10-hour tour of the Douro Valley where hundreds of vineyards and Port producers are located.

The head of the tour mentioned that their vans held 7 guests and that everyone on that day’s tour were in couples. Thus, one couple was going to need to split up for the van rides (a couple hours on each end of the day)…. He said it really pained him to have to ask for it but promised free bottleS of wine to whomever volunteered. B initially didn’t quite get the look I was giving him, but then groaned in recognition when I volunteered us to be that couple. I mean, come ON. He said free bottleS (plural) of wine!

After close to a 2 hour van ride where I tried to sleep but our driver was intent upon interjecting sudden facts about the road or the kind of meat the latest tiny village eats just about every time I would nod off. It was cool to learn the answers to all the questions we would be asked later in the day, though, so that Joka’s van (his name) would look like smarty-pants.

Once we arrive in the river-side village of Pinhão, we boarded a tour boat for short tour on the river to learn more about the terraced growing system in the region, the sponge-like rocks that create perfect conditions for the grapes throughout the year, and how large-scale producers have taken over 90% of the land/business in the Valley.

Luckily, the 2nd and 3rd parts of our tour was to 2 family-owned wineries. Since they’ve received the ability to certify regular table wines fairly recently, we were able to taste the whole array of white, green, and red wines as well as the ports.

The first winery we stopped at was Quinta do Beijo (farm of the kiss). It was named after how hummingbirds are known to “kiss the flowers” while pollinating and how that impacts the whole ecosystem. So sweet!

We had a chance to climb in a monster barrel where the port is aged to see what it is like for the staff who have to climb in there to meticulously scrape sediment, mold, sludge off the insides to prepare them for future aging. Apparently, this is a very dangerous job. So much so, that a person goes in for only 10-15 minutes at a time and must hum or sing the entire time so the person outside of the barrel knows they are okay. Then they have to take a 20+ minute break and come back.

The hole to get in to the barrel looks like mouse hole in a Tom and Jerry’s show and felt kind of like I was trying to squeeze myself through one, to be honest. Surprisingly, I was the first one to volunteer to climb in the barrel. Brian didn’t want to, but apparently there was some pressure applied once I was contained so that we could be reunited in there and they could take some more photos of us. Enjoy!

In the shop area after the barrel excitement, they had a 50-year aged tawny port that we could purchase a glass of (40 Euros!). Brian always talks about a 90-year port he tried with Anne at Canon in Seattle years ago and how unbelievable it was. I decided that this could be a good belated birthday present for him. It did NOT disappoint. While B said it obviously wasn’t quite as complex as the 90-year old one, he said he “expected awesomeness and and was not disappointed. It was delightful.” A GLOWING review by Brian Holz. It makes my heart warm and fuzzy (and so did the port). I feel like I win birthday presents this year.

Quinta do Bela

Round 2 of the wineries was Quinta do Bela, the vineyards where all of our drivers were related to the owner. So, it was truly an intimate business tour experience. They all also were our servers for the homemade lunch they served…. And served again…. And forcefully served again (I’m telling you, they smiled, but they were really pushing the veal stew and even the vegetables for my vegetarian plate. They also did not accept any slowing down while drinking the wine. We each had 2 large glasses which pretty much had a constant stream of wine being poured in them. Brian figured out how to get his glasses cleared with his plate at one point (we all admired his stealthiness) to avoid more wine-pushing, but it was SO concerning to our host that he no longer had a glass, that he went away and returned with 2 more…. And promptly returned the white and red wines to proper levels for immediate consumption. I learned a secret here…. If you order a vegetarian lunch because you don’t like veal, they also serve you less wine. There you go. You’re welcome. I was far less miserable than everyone else on the way home.

I have to mention Molly, a dog who FINALLY paid attention to me. European dogs are not socialized to pay attention to stranger humans on the street or even in their homes. Having been away from my animals for 5 weeks at this point, I was practically oozing desperation for animal love. It took a couple times visiting her in her space stalking the yummy-smelling kitchen door, but she finally looked slightly pleased to see me and gave me a good nose boop. It really did fill my heart up to the brim. Then I realized that she was gesturing for me to open the kitchen door to allow her access. *sigh* whatever! It felt good for a second.

On the way back to Porto, my driver, Joka BLASTED 80’s and 90’s music while everyone was passed out. When it was requested that he lower the volume, he did, but only slightly. I was glad that I was sitting in the front!
